The Hindsight tropes, Hilarious in Hindsight, Harsher in Hindsight, and Heartwarming in Hindsight, are among the most misused Audience Reaction tropes on this site. Many people don't understand that the tropes require more than just "This happened, so that happened", and end up adding examples which either lack connection or the substance that makes them funny/serious/not-so-funny/heartwarming. Some of them may be suited better for other tropes (ex: Life Imitates Art), while some may not belong on TV Tropes at all (such as ones involving politicians, due to Rule of Cautious Editing Judgment).

Please report any Hindsight example that you feel are questionable, and we'll analyze them to see if they are actually examples or not.

Remember that the Hindsight tropes are Audience Reactions. That means if an example under review discusses significant fan response pointing out the hindsight, the example can't be cut solely for being too tenuous for this thread.

    Common NOT in Hindsight examples
  • Creator's character/portrayal dies in work and then creator dies in real life, unless their fictional death is closely similar to their real one (such as Billy Bob Joe portraying a character who dies from pancreatic cancer, then Billy Bob dies from pancreatic cancer himself)
  • Mundane word related to something terrible (such as "corona" or "Epstein") unless there's more to the connection (such as someone named "Corona" having the flu)
  • Creator appears in work then becomes more controversial later on.
  • A common event (such as a typical natural disaster) happens in work, then happens in real life (unless they are closely similar, such as the event happening to the same area in both reality and fiction around the same time) For once, not everything related to disease has to do with COVID-19, not everything related to racism and Police Brutality has to do with George Floyd and Black Lives Matter, and not everything related to sexual abuse has to do with #MeToo.
  • A common/generic concept was used in this work and then later reused in that work (too loose for a connection, unless the concept is so unique it's identified with the work)
  • Two actors appear together then do so in another work
  • Hindsight examples involving recent events, due to them often being shoehorns. Specifically:
    • COVID-19 examples, before 75% of the population has returned to normal
    • George Floyd/2020 Black Lives Matter examples, before protests have declined
  • Examples which fall guilty of Older Than They Think, such as "Make X Great Again" slogans. Aside from violating the ROCEJ, this slogan has been in use since the 1940s.
  • Characters using slurs which are treated as annoying at worst in the work, but is now harsher due to how severe the slur is made now. Discrimination has always existed with that slur. (May qualify for Values Dissonance if work is at least 20 years old.)

Note: As of January 2022, "Funny Aneurysm" Moment is no longer separate from Harsher in Hindsight.
  • The former redirects to the latter and all wicks to the former (with the exception of ones on archive pages and the YMMV Redirects index) must either be moved to the latter (if they're valid) or removed (if they're invalid).
  • The subpages for the former are still accessible from this page. After a subpage for "Funny Aneurysm" Moment has been completely cleaned up, turn it into a redirect to the Harsher in Hindsight subpage for the same medium to preserve inbounds.

[up]Well I saw whoever added it was edit-warring over it, but besides that it seems like a hell of a stretch and an excuse to complain about Wish. Worth cutting.

This definitely seems to be worth cutting as well including the fact it is a bit of a stretch from what I have read.

Almost everything in the Hilarious in Hindsight entry on YMMV.Hazbin Hotel is just Trivia about the foreign voice casts ("Did you know Charlie's Japanese VA voiced a Disney Princess once? And Alastor and Vox's Italian VAs are brothers?")

Number one fan of characters that appear only once and ultimately were a recurring character either in disguise or trying a new image.

Cut all of them. The last one was moved to Casting Gag as it was suggested some pages ago.

Yeah it does sound like all of the examples shown should be cut out of the example so no objections there.

Wonder if this could count for hilarious in hindsight for Power Rangers S.P.D. and Tokusou Sentai Dekaranger.

  • In SPD, Boom dreams of being a Ranger and once had a Image Spot of being the Orange SPD Ranger. In Dekarangers 20th anniversary special, they introduced a new Dekaranger called Primier Dekared which actually has a orange tint to his suit. Not only that, the the color of the uniform when unmorphed is actually orange.

Considering SPD was an adaptation of Dekaranger, I say it counts.

From Lone Survivor

  • Harsher in Hindsight: As if the terrifying descriptions of combat and death weren't bad enough, a man was killed at a screening of the film adaptation for refusing to stop texting.

Not actually similar to the events of the film, plus it's a bit of an oversimplification since it was an argument over texting (during the previews) that escalated into a fight.

This might be an example of Overshadowed by Controversy.

Similarly, The Dark Knight Rises has a harsher entry on the infamous shooting that may work better as an overshadowed entry. It also has some iffy hilarious entries:

  • Hilarious in Hindsight:
    • A comic book aspect of Bane that is Adapted Out of the film is the source of his super strength, a super-soldier steroid called venom. Hell, just seeing Tom Hardy wearing a black mask with "teeth" qualifies as this alone.
    • Thomas Wayne is still alive and being held hostage by Catwoman.
    • Bruce Wayne's doctor is Mr. Mxyzptlk. Knowing this, maybe he caught on that Bruce was Batman, but decided keeping the mystery would be more fun?
    • Batman once again saves Gotham by ridding it of a bomb...

Plus this doesn't seem valid:

  • Olderthan They Think: This isn't the first time Anne Hathaway has played a delinquent. In 2005 she had the lead role in the drama Havoc, where her character engages with gangbangers and drug dealers.

The bomb part is wrong way hindsight, so it can be cut.

Looking over YMMV.Cheers, I found a few Hindsight entries that are a little iffy:

  • Harsher in Hindsight:
    • In the first part of the tenth season, Sam and Rebecca have a character arc in which they attempt to have a baby. (This was an attempt to incorporate Kirstie Alley's pregnancy into the show.) The arc ends when Sam and Rebecca realize they're not ready to be parents and Sam imagines the son that will never be fading away. It's rather sad on its own, but it gets sadder when you remember the real reason the arc was abandoned: Alley had miscarried. The would-be son insists that Sam will have him one day. However, the show ends with Sam single and a later guest appearance on Frasier even derails a possible wedding he intended to have.
    • One episode has a newspaper mistakenly run Rebecca’s obituary. In 2022, Kirstie Alley would become the first main-billed cast member to die after the show ceased production.
  • Hilarious in Hindsight:
    • Woody Harrelson plays a character who winds up in the audience of Jeopardy! both in the episode "What Is... Cliff Clavin?" and a few years later, in the film White Men Can't Jump.
    • Sam Malone has his own Plan Z in an episode of Season 9.
    • In the first episode, Diane takes a call from a Vicki, who Sam has no interest in talking to. Decades later, Ted Danson would play a character with a nemesis by the name of Vicky.
    • Shortly before Robin walks into her life, Rebecca bemoans to Sam that the rich, ambitious, upwardly mobile men she deserves to be courted by aren't exactly beating down a door and queuing up to go out with her. She specifically mentions Donald Trump as an example of the sort of man who is exactly right for her. Even more hilarious when you realize that Kirstie Alley, who played Rebecca, voted for Donald Trump in 2016 and 2020 (this could also be considered Harsher in Hindsight, depending on your political views).
    • When Shelley Long left the series, many feared it would bring about the end of the show. Her successor, Kirstie Alley, wound up appearing in more episodes than Long did.
    • In an elaborate prank Sam makes his friends think they are a target of a Mob hit and have them driven all the way out to North Dakota. The destination of the bus they took is Seattle.
    • In the season 2 episode "Fortunes and Men's Weights," Coach describes a salesman who conned him into buying an antique scale as being like a cross between Abraham Lincoln and Adolf Hitler.
    • Rebecca's most notable bosses and crushes are Evan Drake and Robin Colcord. Just a few months after Robin's debut, Tim Drake became the third DC Comics Robin.
    • The fantasy flashforward in "I Do And Adieu" is already slightly giggle-worthy given it's clearly just Ted Danson and Shelley Long in make-up to sort of look elderly, but even moreso given Ten Danson ended up aging somewhat more differently than shown.

I should note that the entry about Kirstie Alley's miscarriage was something I originally submitted when I thought we should have something like Fridge Sadness. Now that we do have that, maybe the entry could be moved to the show's Fridge page? Everything else seems to have too small a connection.

[up] Not Fridge anything (that's for things implied but not stated within the work), that first entry might fit better on Reality Subtext. The second feels like a stretch, all these actors will die one day. The one about Trump feels valid, if it isn't too politically fraught (though the last sentence should go). Drake and Robin seems close enough. The rest I feel are either too much of a stretch or lacking in context.

Stories don't tell us monsters exist; we knew that already. They show us that monsters can be trademarked and milked for years.

Alley's death might have a weak connection because she's the first main cast member to die, but I'm not sure if it's quite strong enough since she was just mistaken for dead.

Is the Seattle one meant to connect to Frasier? That could work with context.

YMMV.The Blind Side has two separate Harsher in Hindsight entries concerning the 2023 lawsuit about Michael Oher and the Tuohy family's relationship. One is under a "multimedia" heading that seems to have been added specifically for it, and the other is commented out under the film section on the basis that it was unconfirmed at the time.

Remove both? Remove the multimedia one and un-comment the film one? They were added by different people at different times, but they're about the same thing, and I think it's a valid example personally regarding the accusations Oher made and criticisms of exploitation about the film itself.

I found this on The Crossing

  • Hilarious in Hindsight: Hamilton doesn't get many lines in this film in his role as Washington's lieutenant, to the point where he comes off as The Quiet One. Thanks to Hamilton, the irony is apparent to pretty much everybody, rather than just history buffs who already well knew Hamilton's habit of never keeping his opinions to himself.
Seems like Fan Myopia to me? I haven't seen The Crossing myself, but I can also imagine that the reason Hamilton doesn't get many lines is that he's a side character in that film but the main character in Hamilton.

From Girls' Frontline, I feel like this another BLM shoehorning, how do you think?

  • Harsher in Hindsight: One of Thompson's secretary lines has her enthusing about the prospect of a world without police. In early June of 2020, a faction of George Floyd protesters attempted to make this a reality with the self-proclaimed Autonomous Zone in Capitol Hill. Let's just say it didn't end well.

Does this look remarkable enough for HilariousInHindsight.Pokemon?

  • In the 1999 board book I'm Not Pikachu!, children who watch Pokémon: The First Movie in a theater come out resembling either Pikachu, Mewtwo, or Mew. Twenty years later, the first live-action Pokémon movie would boast a human man trapped in his Pikachu's body in the title role, as well as a villain who transfers himself into Mewtwo's body during the climax.
