Do you have trouble recognizing when you've written a Zero-Context Example?

Not sure if you really have a Badass Bookworm or just a guy who likes to read?

Well, this is the thread for you. We're here to help you will all the finer points of example writing. If you have any questions, we can answer them. Don't be afraid. We don't bite. We all just want to make the wiki a better place for everyone.

Useful Tips:

  • Make sure that the example makes sense to both people who don't know the work AND don't know the trope.
    • Wrong: The Mentor: Kevin is this to Bob in the first episode.
    • Right: The Mentor: Kevin takes Bob under his wing in the first episode and teaches him the ropes of being a were-chinchilla.
  • Never just put the trope title and leave it at that.
    • Wrong: Badass Adorable
    • Right: Badass Adorable: Xavier, the group's cute little mascot, defeats three raging elephants with both hands tied behind his back using only an uncooked spaghetti noodle.
  • When is normally far less important than How.
    • Wrong: Big Bad: Of the first season.
    • Right: Big Bad: The heroes have to defeat the Mushroom Man lest the entirety of Candy Land's caramel supply be turned into fungus.
  • A character name is not an explanation.

Here are some ideas for future trope examples on the American Dragon: Jake Long "Being Human" episode recap page:

  • Curb-Stomp Battle: Halfway through the episode, Councilor Chang rapidly defeats both Sun Park and Haley via her Magic Staff without either of them being able to fight back very well against her at all, allowing Councilor Chang to subsequently capture an enfeebled Jake for his Dragon chi.
  • Distressed Dude: Councilor Chang captures Jake and uses him in a resurrection ritual for the Dark Dragon via draining and obtaining his dragon chi, forcing Sun Park and Haley to rescue Jake once they find him again.

From Rogue One. Is what is posted below an accurate example of What Do You Mean, It's Not for Kids?, or does it sound more like what someone would write if they suspected that the filmmakers were trying to invoke True Art Is Angsty.

  • What Do You Mean, It's Not for Kids?: Some viewers felt that the writers tried to invoke this trope by making Rogue One as adult as possible, with its more grounded approach and Darker and Edgier tone than even The Force Awakens. A few people felt that the loss of whimsy took away the "Star Wars" feel, though whether that's a good or a bad thing is up for debate.

Reads like total misuse. There's no indication that people mistook the movie as being for kids or explanation of exactly why it's not for kids.

I do some cleanup and then I enjoy shows you probably think are cringe.

While we're on the topic, does this edit from Dragon Age II qualify as proper use of True Art Is Angsty?

  • True Art Is Angsty: This game is a poster child for this mentality, and many feel that the writing veered into overdone melodrama.

True Art Is Angsty is In-Universe Examples Only, so to qualify, it'd have to be about a character in the story taking that attitude, not the writers.

Trouble Cube continues to be a general-purpose forum for those who desire such a thing.

Unisex Series, Gendered Merchandise: Not merch, doesn't count?

  • Cited reasoning from the creator states that this was why Tower Prep was canceled. The creator said that it was mostly made as a gender-neutral show, but apparently was being more favored by girls than by boys, which is what the marketing didn't want to happen.

Webcomic.Aurora 2019:

  • Dark Is Not Evil: The seventh element, Void, is used by the Big Bad, but it's also the element/concept of digestion. Making people want to eat, and making food actually work to heal people.

From External Retcon:

  • One big plot hole in The Lord of the Rings is "why can't the Fellowship ride the Eagles to Mordor and dispose of the Ring lickety-split?", with the official answer being "Sauron has such dominion over Mordor that he controls even the air currents". This is not widely accepted. Middle-earth: Shadow of Mordor introduces a creature called a "hell-hawk", a smaller cousin to the NazgĂ»l's flying steeds which attack eagles on sight, in much the same way crows instinctively hate owls.

This doesn't sound like the "original story you knew is a lie/now has added context" examples that the trope is about, it sounds more like a regular Retcon or Author's Saving Throw. And I don't think the "Sauron controls air currents" answer is even official? It's not brought up in places like this wiki entry all about the infamous question, and Tolkien's letter about it didn't bring it up either.

[up] Tolkien's response to the classic question is that they were simply too powerful of a Plot Device and hence he used them sparingly, nothing about wind currents.

The Eagles are a dangerous 'machine'. I have used them sparingly, and that is the absolute limit of their credibility or usefulness.

So it should be either of the two you named.

Just a question, in regards to Fake Nationality in Japanese made media, do we list the JP VAs when they play characters that don't share their nationalities?

I ask this cause Trivia.Sakura Wars and their other trivia pages (like Trivia.Sakura Wars The Movie and Trivia.Sakura Wars 2019) have Fake Nationality (with other examples like Fake Brit and Fake American) relating to the Japanese VAs. I also think it's worth mentioning that the series did have a few english dubs (like the anime adaptation of the first three Sakura War games and Sakura Wars: So Long, My Love) but other entries did not (The first three entries, though this is attributed to them having no export and Sakura Wars (2019)).

What do?

[up] Since anime is strictly a provincialist affair I think it makes sense that this shouldn't be indicated for any of the original voice actors/seiyuu.

Dubs allow a little bit more wiggle room but given that they're mostly handled in the USA I think it doesn't make sense to include them either.

Here are some ideas for future The Oner examples:

  • It Follows:
    • The very first shot after the opening titles starts with a pan across the street to Annie's house and ends with Annie driving off.
    • A slow pan around a school corridor occurs when Jay and Greg try to track down Jeff/Hugh and you can see (though the camera shows it no favour) "It" walking off of the campus pavement toward the door of the hallway bearing the school records room in which Jay and her friends are doing research.
    • Jay running from the beachhouse, getting in the car, driving off of the road, and having an accident all takes place during a single shot.

Found these examples in Film.Rogue One.

  • Advancing Boss of Doom: Darth Vader at the end of the film. Leading the boarding party to take back the Death Star's plans, any rebel soldiers that end up within his reach die as he methodically carves through them, very nearly reclaiming the plans all by himself.
  • Advancing Wall of Doom: The explosion from the Death Star's laser, at only a fraction of its full power, is enough to create a shockwave capable of peeling back the crust of a planet for kilometers in all directions. To characters on the ground, this appears as, well, a rather extreme example of this trope.
K-2SO: There seems to be a problem on the horizon: There's no horizon.
These two tropes are video game mechanics. Are non-video game examples allowed? Do the above qualify?

From YMMV.Tar

  • Award Snub: Failed to win any of its six nominations at the 95th Academy Awards despite being one of the best reviewed films of the year. In particular, while many agreed that Michelle Yeoh (for Everything Everywhere All at Once; which beat it for five of its nominations) was a worthy winner for Best Actress, there were also some who felt that Cate Blanchett gave the best performance of her career and should have won instead.

Does the bolded part really belong like it gives the impression that it is not an example. Or is that just me.

Maybe this instead:

I think it's fine as is, Award Snub doesn't need unanimous agreement. Its true that many think michelle yeoh deserved it, its also true that many think cate blanchett deserves it more.

Yeah, the narrative was Blanchett v Yeoh leading up to the actual ceremony. Award Snub is too broad for my taste and I will try to deal with it in the future, but under the current scope it’s an example.

Here's an idea for a future Freudian Excuse example in films:

  • In Zathura, Walter acts very callous towards Danny because he's having a hard time dealing with his parents' divorce, so Walter blames Danny for literally every bad thing going on in his life. Despite Walter only being ten years old when the film happens, said divorce occurs sometime prior to the film's events.

Non-Combatant Immunity: Is this Immune enough to count?

  • Shantae: Half-Genie Hero: In the first level, Shantae can't attack, but she's functionally invincible due to having no Life Meter. Still, she has to face bats which can knock her away from the exit. She can either dodge them, or lead them into flames that deal them a One-Hit Kill.

And aversions aren't relevant so I can cut this?

  • Averted in Gamer 2. Hailey doesn't get her first weapons until the end of the second level, forcing her to survive by jumping, stealthing, or dodging enemies before then.

This was added to Characters.Friendship Is Magic Supporting Cast Other Locations:

  • Demoted to Satellite Love Interest: Sugar Belle. When she first appeared, she and the other equal ponies foiled Starlight's plan and the latter got run out of town. Starting with "Hard to Say Anything", the closest Sugar Belle gets to development is "in a relationship with Big Mac".

I considered adding this prior but decided against as the rest of the equal ponies were straight Demoted to Extra, only getting cameos afterward, so Sugar Belle seems like the opposite "Promoted To Satellite Love Interest" as she was the only one to get any meaningful screentime, characterization, or story role afterward. Thoughts?

Also asked the MLP thread.

https://tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pmwiki.php/Recap/DigimonAdventureE12DigiBabyBoom

  • Too Long; Didn't Dub: The note telling Takeru and Patamon to rub the egg is prominently shown, yet the American dub does not have the text of the note (which is clearly written in hiragana) edited. While not editing Japanese text happens every so often in Digimon dubs, this example merits mentioning because the dub has Patamon attempt to explain the kana off as "DigiCode" (especially odd when the franchise already has something called DigiCode, which is very visibly not hiragana).

I dont think the trope is being used correctly. The trope would be in use if the note had not been translated at all but it was and rather faithfully at that. I think we need a trope for when dubs try to pass off Japanese or some other language as fictional and or "funny squiggles". The Sailor Moon dub by Cloverway did that too.
