Do you have trouble recognizing when you've written a Zero-Context Example?

Not sure if you really have a Badass Bookworm or just a guy who likes to read?

Well, this is the thread for you. We're here to help you will all the finer points of example writing. If you have any questions, we can answer them. Don't be afraid. We don't bite. We all just want to make the wiki a better place for everyone.

Useful Tips:

  • Make sure that the example makes sense to both people who don't know the work AND don't know the trope.
    • Wrong: The Mentor: Kevin is this to Bob in the first episode.
    • Right: The Mentor: Kevin takes Bob under his wing in the first episode and teaches him the ropes of being a were-chinchilla.
  • Never just put the trope title and leave it at that.
    • Wrong: Badass Adorable
    • Right: Badass Adorable: Xavier, the group's cute little mascot, defeats three raging elephants with both hands tied behind his back using only an uncooked spaghetti noodle.
  • When is normally far less important than How.
    • Wrong: Big Bad: Of the first season.
    • Right: Big Bad: The heroes have to defeat the Mushroom Man lest the entirety of Candy Land's caramel supply be turned into fungus.
  • A character name is not an explanation.

Inappropriate Speak-and-Spell: is this the right kind of Inappropriate?

Also, this isn't a Speak And Spell? And not inappropriate in the "We don't want kids to hear this" sense?

  • At one time, one could find G.I. Joe action figures with voice chips that said things like "Yo Joe!", "ATTAAACK!", and "Vengeance is mine!"

[up]I don't think the second example counts because it doesn't come off as non-child-friendly to me, or at least not enough to qualify. I'm not too sure about the first one though. I think it might count if it has more violent things to say; I don't think "Die" itself is violent enough to count.

I'm starting to get the impression that Irony is used too liberally, with this entry in Recap.Sponge Bob Square Pants S 7 E 10 A Day Without Tears Summer Job providing a good example:

  • Irony: Squidward makes a bet SpongeBob can stop crying, yet he tries to get him to lose.
As far as I can understand, this isn't irony; rather it's Squidward cheating on the bet. Any thoughts?

[up] From what I can tell, Irony seems to have this problem of being applied too broadly in general; maybe it should be taken to the Trope Repair Shop?

So these two curious examples were added to Power Bomberman.

These are both Title Tropes. Is the trope flexible enough to cover cases like these?

I'd like to apologize for all this.

[up][up]Maybe so.

[up]I feel Super Title 64 Advance is misuse because the title doesn't suggest the game is on that platform. I also feel In Case You Forgot Who Wrote It is misuse too because it doesn't involve the name of an authour/director/etc. being in the title.

Does the following qualify as Sociopathic Hero?

  • The Victors Project: It's hard to tell if Jade Boelyn is this or just putting on a good front. She is a dedicated Rebel, determined not to let anyone else she could save die, and does feel a sense of loss for various victors killed in the war, but looks back relatively fondly on her own Games (how she looks, some of her kill methods, etc.). And then there's how, at the age of ten, she once helped her future Ermine Mentor kill the Academy of Evil's resident Girl Posse (who'd murdered Ermine's friend), largely on a whim and watched with a smile.

Must a Healing Loop be endless on one side to count, otherwise they're just a Damage Sponge?

Because it's Starving and I was hoping to beef it up with:

  • The Brief and Meaningless Adventure of Hero Man: At low enough levels and if there's only manaless mages left, the Player Party can't hit Medic Oozies hard enough and/or consistently enough to stop them from surviving 40-ish turns by healing themselvesband impairing the accuracy of the party. The loop ends at that point because then their own mana runs out and they're a Harmless Enemy by themselves.

[up][up]If it isn't a front, then sure; I feel she's callous yet heroic enough to count as a Sociopathic Hero.

[up]The third paragraph on Healing Loop suggests it doesn't have to be eternal, so I feel that counts.

Characters.South Park The Boys under Kyle Broflovski's folder:

  • Would Hurt a Child: The earlier seasons had Kyle occasionally kick his baby brother Ike around like a football following his "Kick the baby!" schtick.

Kyle is a child (albeit older) himself, so this sounds more like a case of Kids Are Cruel or Big Brother Bully, both of which are already present under his folder.

[up][up][up] - Thanks! ... And noting its on Tropes Needing TRS, I'm not gonna mess with it anymore.

The Pretty Guys Are Stronger: Just not added by anyone due to no one thinking of it?

  • Sailor Moon: With every human having Generic Cuteness, this makes the human higher-ups of the Dark Kingdom this, with the lower-rungs being shapeshifting monsters called "youma", with their natural form bearing non-human skin colors and appendages like horns and tails.

  • Dungeon Keeper Ami: From "Gauging the Opposition", Sailor Jupiter rates the Dark Kingdom's Generals's physical appearances as "All of them so far have been gorgeous", and when that is compared to the monstrous humanoid forms of the Dark Kingdom's youma grunts, this trope results.

[up][up]Yeah, I don't think a kid punting a baby counts as Would Hurt a Child.

[up]You are welcome. As for those entries, I'm leaning on saying they don't count. This is because they don't describe outfits that are the least physically imposing members being the strongest.

[up] Not of that example have anything to do with the title of the game itself. I said cut it.

A couple ones I want to check from YMMV.Music 2021:

  • Audience-Alienating Premise: "Recovering alcoholic taking care of her Inspirationally Disadvantaged autistic sister" is already a tough sell that sounds like an outdated Oscar Bait. And the strong musical elements downright makes everyone doubt that this weird, controversial thing will be something they can like.► The premise doesn't seem so far-fetched. In fact, as another example on YMMV.Music 2021 (What The Hell, Casting Agency?) points out, many critics consider it a waste that no autistic actresses were hired for this film, indicating that the premise is not the problem, but the production and filmmaking decisions. I think this doesn't count
  • Memetic Psychopath: Ebo, whose tactic for handling autistic children having meltdowns involves laying down on top of them in order to pin them down, and who smiles when he mentions his autistic younger brother being dead.
"I'm going to crush you now and make you feel safe."
"I am crushing her with my love!"
    • ► It's not a meme, it's just a direct criticism of Ebo. I think this doesn't count
  • Pandering to the Base: In theory, this film was supposed to appeal to the autistic community, having an autistic person in a major movie role. With how it depicted autistic people and reduced its title character to a Living Prop at best and an outright burden to her carers at worst — on top of strong-arming a young neurotypical actress into the role — to say it backfired spectacularly would be an enormous understatement. As a result, Sia saw a massive blow to her reputation from both the autistic community and in general.► The film clearly failed in its pandering and considering that YMMV example cannot be played with I think this does not count.

I asked it in Trope Finder, but until I get an answer: Is Flashback to Catchphrase flexible enough to count when a character explains the reason behind their catchphrase in a casual conversation without any flashback sequences?

  • Catchphrase: "Oh, mother". In "Time Machine", he reveals the reason behind this catchphrase, which is the fact that he misses his parents. [Another common phrase is "I don't believe it".]

This is the example I had in mind, but it doesn't seem to fit Catchphrase since that trope has an on-going wick check and it seems to fail the "not unique" requirement. That's why I wonder if it might fit the sub-trope Flashback to Catchphrase instead or that trope isn't flexible enough. There might be a missing supertrope, but if it's the only example that fits, it might be Too Rare to Trope.

I'm mainly a fan of underrated media.

I know this question is a bit weird, but what is better, to write an example here and wait until it's addressed so I can add it... or just add it, and if its wrong someone else can remove it with an edit reason? I promise not to add anything too outrageously out of place but this is taking kind of a long time.

The Testosterone Brigade example on YMMV.Flipper is a bit creepy:

With an adolescent Jessica Alba in the cast of the '90s version, you just know a number of little boys (and some not-so-little boys) were watching for her not the dolphin. Especially as she was the human cast member retained after the retool.

Should I cut it?

[up](x5) I agree that the premise itself isn't far-fetched enough to count as Audience-Alienating Premise. Plus, from what I can tell, a lot of the film's hate comes from it being ableist and that it's overall considered a bad movie. Also, the entry sounds like complaining to me.

I don't think Memetic Psychopath counts either because it doesn't state people make him out to be an Ax-Crazy monster. I'm not too sure about Pandering to the Base, though.

[up](x4) The flashback part of Flashback to Catchphrase doesn't seem to be optional, so I don't think that Catchphrase entry counts as FTC.

[up](x3) I prefer the latter personally assuming I'm confident the example itself counts.

[up]Besides that, it sounds kinda speculative to me, though I might be wrong. It also doesn't explain the part of Testosterone Brigade that involves the work being gender-neutral or female-oriented. Hence, I'd cut it.

I have to question the second Squick entry in YMMV.The Goddamn George Liquor Program:

  • And don't forget that despite his freakish size, Jimmy is a mentally handicapped eight year old! The sheer level of messed-up is absolutely cringe inducing, especially given what's come to light about John K.
Maybe it's meant to refer to the fact that Sody Pop (who's 15 years old) is in a relationship with Jimmy, but I really feel the wording here is too confusing. However, I have no idea what to do with this entry. Any comments?

Moral Event Horizon was crossed in this example?

Example: Serial Killer Mark, obsessed with money and someone else's blood, has been committing numerous particularly brutal murders of businessmen and rich people for 25 years, for the sake of possessing their riches. In addition to the riches, Travis particularly brutally killed the wives, children, parents and friends of most of his victims over 25 years (he killed them to cover his tracks), and he also interrupted some investigators and police officers leading the case of his murders. In addition to just killing, he also tortures his victims and revels in Bloody Hilarious.
