Do you have trouble remembering the difference between Deathbringer the Adorable and Fluffy the Terrible?

Do you have trouble recognizing when you've written a Zero-Context Example?

Not sure if you really have a Badass Bookworm or just a guy who likes to read?

Well, this is the thread for you. We're here to help you will all the finer points of example writing. If you have any questions, we can answer them. Don't be afraid. We don't bite. We all just want to make the wiki a better place for everyone.

Useful Tips:

  • Make sure that the example makes sense to both people who don't know the work AND don't know the trope.
    • Wrong: The Mentor: Kevin is this to Bob in the first episode.
    • Right: The Mentor: Kevin takes Bob under his wing in the first episode and teaches him the ropes of being a were-chinchilla.
  • Never just put the trope title and leave it at that.
    • Wrong: Badass Adorable
    • Right: Badass Adorable: Xavier, the group's cute little mascot, defeats three raging elephants with both hands tied behind his back using only an uncooked spaghetti noodle.
  • When is normally far less important than How.
    • Wrong: Big Bad: Of the first season.
    • Right: Big Bad: The heroes have to defeat the Mushroom Man lest the entirety of Candy Land's caramel supply be turned into fungus.
  • A character name is not an explanation.

Just cut the Cortana off Stock Weapon Names. And sudden inspiration struck to look at Final Fantasy, which has multiple Curtanas? And Re:Monster, which might not be a different Curtana.

Princesses of the Pizza Parlor: So this doesn't count because it's bathing, not swimming?

  • Skinny Dipping: After becoming a shipwrecked castaway in Princesses on the Lonely Isle, Selvi strips down to wash off in the ocean.

[down] - Cut, now going through the trope.

[up]I don't think that Skinny Dipping entry counts since, as you stated, she's more so bathing rather than swimming.

repost, but I've reworded it somewhat now.

I added an example to Aside Comment but I'm having second thoughts because the trope description says they can't explicitly acknowledge the audience's existence. I'm wondering if adding a quote would be helpful.

  • BoBoiBoy: In Season 3, Episode 24, Adu Du and Probe propose another Enemy Mine with the team of heroes because their common foe, Ejo Jo, has revealed that he is returning to Earth via his Spacebook profile. Probe then looks to the audience and advises them against sharing sensitive information online, and no one appears to notice, as Adu Du simply swipes the tablet away from Probe to show Ejo Jo's latest profile post.
Probe: Remember, kids, don't share secret or private information on social media! Or else the whole world will know!

Are you afraid?

Found this in Immortality Bisexuality.

  • Some people feel this way about Alice in Twilight. Though it's canonically stated that she's in love with Jasper, fans seem to think that's she also has feelings for Bella.
The context leans towards fan interpretation / YMMV rather than what is actually depicted in work. Cut? Or is there a better trope for this?

Could be moved to Fanon, or maybe Ho Yay if there's more details.

Also I think the C+H example from a page or two back was trying to claim it's an Averted Trope.

I do some cleanup and then I enjoy shows you probably think are cringe.

So, not only just in this case that I'm about to question, but there are a fair amount of times where a character is said as an "expy" of two characters, which is according to the definition of Expy, is a misuse of this trope.

Hopefully it wouldn't be a problem or mind to take this issue, because there is at least an example of "based on two characters" thing on Fire Emblem On Forums Wonderful Blessing. (And to say my intention is that I don't want to get either myself or any tropers behind it in trouble.)

Specifically, on the characters "Miria Silverfoot" and "Fantine von Allia". The Expy example is described as such:

Expy: Miria is one of both Darkness and Leafa, while Fantine is one of Annette and Megumin.

This definitely would be a misuse of the Expy trope, but after some time of thinking, how would someone try to put a character as expy of two tropes, I found out about another trope: Composite Character, a trope in which a character having traits from multiple characters (usually in adaptational works).

My though was, hmm, the GM of this roleplay must have clearly have the idea of borrowing two characters as references and then fusing them to one character each for these two.

I want to get an question though. Can you put Composite Character for borrowing idea from two other characters from works that are not related to you in any way (as in, not yours), and then fuse the characteristics from both of these characters into one? If not, may I ask if it's worth suggesting it as it's own trope in Trope Launch Pad, but first I would need to ask for other examples in a separate thread on Trope Talk.

Found this in Tokyo Xanadu:

"Blind Idiot" Translation: The English localization for the Vita version isn't bad, but it's definitely inconsistent. The same place will be referred to by different names between scenes, both first and second-year students are called "sophomores," and several other little things that start becoming easily noticeable. These issues were fixed in the PS4 and PC versions, though they're unfortunately still littered with typos.

Iirc, This about an over literal translation, not a “bad translation” (though according to Shiny Cotton Candy, the translation, especially for eX+ arent bad. A few typos, but thats expected for a text heavy game). Not to mention its being TRS’ed for a potential rename and rewrite. Any other thoughts?

A few pages back, I asked for feedback on The Real Ghostbusters being shoehorned into Four-Man Band. I had one response, agreeing, but the complication here is that The Real Ghostbusters is the page image. I asked on IP what the consequences are for an example being removed for shoehorning if it forms the page image, and the response was that if this thread agrees that the entry should be removed, then the image will need a thread to remove it as well.

Since I only had one response, I thought I better see if there's a bigger consensus in any direction for whether The Real Ghostbusters should be removed from Four-Man Band, given that it will impage the page image, too.

The example is as follows:

The Real Ghostbusters

Only Sane ManWinston Zeddmore
The Smart GuyDr. Egon Spengler
The Casanova WannabeDr. Peter Venkman
The Butt-MonkeyDr. Raymond Stantz

The dedicated Butt-Monkey of the show is Venkman, not Stantz, but all the characters will fall into the trope at some point or other. The character pages agree with this, troping Venkman as the Butt-Monkey but not Stantz. Stantz does play second fiddle The Smart Guy to Egon, but otherwise doesn't fall into any of the Four-Man Band categories.

If my post doesn't mention a giant flying sperm whale with oversized teeth and lionfish fins for flippers, it just isn't worth reading.

Good morning. If Only Sane Man has this (the disadvantages will be indicated in the example), then he will not be Only Sane Man?

Example: Everyone, except of Drake is the dumbasses or jerks. Drake seems to be an Only Sane Man, but he has a Guilt Complex (due to the fact that he is too responsible, constrained and believes that he can do more) and a bad tendency not to accept praise (due to the fact that he believes that he has made too many mistakes and bad deeds, therefore he is devoid of self-love and too modest and reserved). It is noteworthy that he tries and corrects his mistakes, if possible, but thoughts of causing evil and harm, even if those that are very insignificant, almost negligible occurred because of him, do not forgot for a long time.

The English in your example is a bit wonky "Except of Drake" isnt proper. Try "Except Drake" instead.

re: Wyldchyld

I've just looked at Four-Man Band and I need a Brain Bleach.

Why on earth is every entry in a table format and has always been that way? Aside that no examples have any context to tell if they even count, this questioning is meaningless since Four-Man Band is literally unusable as a trope page and needs to go straight to TRS.

not sure if this where it goes, but a user ~Beansidhe disputes that Vampire Survivors is a roguelite

it has been called as such by kotaku, polygon, IGN, the escapist

per the roguelike article, vampire survivors has:

Permanent character death is tricky because when you die, your run ends and you lose your weapons and levelups, but you dont have the character die

Yeah, I guess it's more a Roguelite? Which is currently a redirect, but I think it's on TLP?

Anvilicious.Live Action TV: Not a work, but a Creator? So it should be cut?

  • Green Is Universal, a concept so heavy-handed and self-righteous that it couldn't be contained on just one network. Indeed, this bi-yearly theme appears on every cable and broadcast channel owned by NBC. NBC in turn was owned by General Electric, a polluter so massive and frightening that even Captain Planet would fear to confront it. The irony is so thick and juicy that you could cut it with a steak knife.

that sounds more like The Man Is Sticking It to the Man or Clueless Aesop. as it is, it isnt anvilicious and it's (rightfully) complaining about NBC pushing a pro-eco theme while being owned by a polluting megacorp

[up] Removed it now, and while I'm at it Tokyo Xanadu's trivia page has this

  • Bad Export for You: The western release of the Playstation Vita edition of the game is often cited to be this trope by those who've played it, with most claming that the script's translation feels rushed and not very polished with some very glaring inconsistencies and mistakes strewn around. Averted with the western ports of the eX+ re-release, which is considered to be of exponentially better quality by the Falcom fandomnote .

I want to be sure if the OG version of TX is that bad in the translation department, cause Bad Export for You was removed months back due to not containing good enough tropes to justify it (Invisible Advertisment, No Dub for You etc. which are otherwise fairly common)

So, this was bugging me for a long while now, but I didn't really know where to address it, until I found out this existed. Is this actually an example for Characters.Elden Ring The Tarnished?

  • Attention Deficit... Ooh, Shiny!: The Tarnished has a bit of a problem with actually following through on their victories. Several mid-fight cutscenes have them poised to kill their target, only to get distracted by something happening elsewhere, initiating the second phase of the battle.

I thought this kind of thing was more related to Cutscene Incompetence, which is already in the character page. Since this is a Player Character, this does not feel like a consistent character trait to warrant as an example, otherwise, I'd count every other time a FromSoft Player Character let the enemy or boss power up. At least, that's how I see it.
