Island of Devils is an alternate universe Attack on Titan fanfiction by LockAndKey989. Set in an alternate timeline where Karl Fritz never (intentionally) betrayed Eldia and Paradis is more advanced while actively seeking allies against Marley as a result. When the Warriors came to Paradis, they were able to take back eight of the nine Titans. After that, they sent an ultimatum to Marley. Free their Eldians, give them every Eldian in Liberio, and liberate all their conquered territories, or else Paradis will invade.

Summary: Paradis, the infamous Island of Devils, where the entire Eldian population of Liberio and a crew of Marleyan soldiers are being held hostage. Thanks to them, Marley has taken a massive hit to its military might as Paradis makes allies. But even in this new age, some are unwilling to make amends with the Devils of Paradis, and some Parisians still want to flatten the earth. AOT AU.

The author also created a short prequel called When Liberio Came To Paradis which shows the Eldians from Liberio being relocated to Paradis.

As well as another prequel focusing on the events that happened before the story, from Grisha arriving on Paradis to Historia being crowned queen which is still ongoing. Titled A Fathers Machinations. Or here.

Island of Devils contains examples of:

  • Abusive Parents:
    • Here, Grisha never had a full Heel Realization for how he treated Zeke and he subtly influenced Eren into taking a similar mindset to him.
      • This included refusing to kick the ball back to Eren while playing with him unless he could answer questions like who are Paradis' allies.
      • He was s concerned about Mikasa's fate (for the sake of his mission) that he forgot to shield his son Eren from the sight of her parents dead bodies and was in such a hurry to find Mikasa that he didnt think to take Eren with him to the Military Police headquarters. To his credit though, he acknowledges the last part and is relieved that Eren is alive after scolding him for throwing himself in danger. Though he later told Eren he as proud of him for killing the kidnappers.
    • Karina lied to Reiner about his father wanting to be with them to motivate him to be Marley’s soldier for revenge and their family's benefit. When asked about him years later, she lies and tells her son that he died a year before Reiner's mission.
    • Like in canon, Historia was neglected by her mother and grandparents. The later of which outright admitted that they never cared for her or her mother, and consider them both a disgrace to their family. Though her grandfather at least acknowledges that she does work around the farm and that the same that she brings to their family isn't actually her own fault. Doesnt help him care any more for her though.
  • Adaptational Badass:
    • Due to the previous kings having developed a method for transferring a shifters spinal fluid to another Eldian safely to avoid the Curse of Ymir, Rod Reiss had no issue taking the Founder from his brother Uri.
      • And then he was eventually defeated by the protagonists.
    • Paradis had 100 years to develop technologically. Not only do they have cars and other modern appliances but they have weaponry that greatly surpasses the ones Marley has. They even provided other countries with Anti-Titan weaponry so they can defend themselves against Marley and gain allies for themselves.
    • Due to this they were able to successfully take the Titans from the Warriors when they came to Paradis. Giving them eight of the nine Titans.
    • Furthermore, they have complete control of the Founding Titan so they were able to effectively threaten Marley into complying with their demands.
    • Among the Paradisians who became shifters include: Connie (Armor), Jean (Beast-Horse), Sasha (female), in addition to Armin and Eren still having the Colossal and Attack Titans respectively.
      • There are also pseudo-shifters. Hange can turn into a flying bat-like Titan and there are 10-meter intelligent Titans with crafted ultra-hard steel armor and giant guns.
    • Mikasa’s body emits lightning when she uses her abilities.
  • Adaptational Wimp: Grisha never succeeded in getting the Founder so Eren isn’t the Founder either.
  • Adaptational Heroism:
    • Instead of Karl Fritz setting up Eldia to fall and subjecting his own people to eventual extermination, he sought to downsize the empire and grant equal rights to the subjugated populations. He also never created the vow of renouncing war and some of the things that happened to Paradis after that: the Asian and Ackerman clans being hunted, and the people of the walls memory being erased, were instead done by his son Conrad.
    • Because Eren knew about the outside world from a young age (although he didnt know about Ymir) he was motivated to become a soldier to free the Eldians from Marley’s internment zones. Having said that, he was still wanted to crush Marley and was very disappointed/angry to learn the people he wanted to help hate his island too.
  • Adaptational Nice Guy: Thanks to Fritz’s actions during the Titan War, many of the countries he liberated (that weren’t reconquered by Marley or other nations) became safe havens for Eldians after the Titan war and allies with Paradis. As opposed to the universal hatred in canon.
  • Adaptational Villainy: In canon Grisha learned from his mistakes with Zeke and didn’t try raising Eren to be a soldier at all. Here, he decided to subtly influence him into wanting to be a scout and planned to use both him and Historia into taking down the Reiss’ and Marley.
  • Batman Gambit: Thanks to Grisha preparing in advance for an outbreak that he knew was going to happen, Grisha became famous in his district, got recognized from the Interior (and thus allowed to enter and investigate the Founder), became successful enough to get his own clinic, and earned Carla’s hand in marriage.
  • Be Careful What You Wish For: Karina Braun used the excuse that the people of Paradis abandoned their people in Marley which is why she encouraged her son to fight them. However, when Paradis requests that Marley hand over all the Eldians in Liberio, she is angry and scared.
  • Because You Were Nice to Me:
    • A global example, most of the world hails Historia for saving them from Marleys conquests and cutting off their use of Titans, along with her promise to end the Power of the Titans completely in 50 years.
    • Despite having the means, Dina Fritz is unwilling to overthrow Historia (yet) because she is grateful to her for reverting her to human form.
    • Gabi admits to her aunt that most of the people that they have taken hostage and were threatening to kill were good to her, even the ones that knew she was really Reiners cousin, and suggests not killing them.
  • Better the Devil You Know: This is Piecks main reason for siding with the GES despite what Paradis has done for Eldians and her own opinions of Marley. But between coming to trust Jean and Porcos sanity slippage she changes her mind.
  • Blue-and-Orange Morality: Grisha does shady and morally ambiguous things, including using and manipulating his family and even giving Eren his Titan despite knowing it will kill him in 13 years. But he only wishes to free his oppressed people and still cares about them deep down. Grisha also tells Eren he is proud of him for being able to track down and kill Mikasa’s kidnappers, only making sure Eren knows not to do that to non-murderers.
  • Break His Heart to Save Him: Sasha does this to Niccolo when she is manipulated into thinking he’s being bullied for his friendship with her.
  • Calling the Old Man Out: Reiner calls out his mother for lying to him about his father and manipulating him into being a warrior out of her loyalty to Marley and desire for revenge against Paradis.
  • Break Them by Talking: Several people point out the racist and hypocritical illogicalities of Marley's treatment toward Eldians and question Karina and Gabi how they can expect Marley to see them as good Eldians and forgive them for the crimes of Eldia if they themselves can't even do that for the Paradisians despite showing they can be good people. Both cant answer that.
  • Boomerang Bigot: The Good Eldian Society (run by Karina Braun and Porco Gilliard) are Eldians from Liberio who still hate the Paradisian Eldians and seek to destroy them for Marley. Their attitude toward the islanders is exactly the same as Marley's is to them. Falco even asks how they really expect Marley to one day forget the crimes of their ancestors and accept them as people if they cant forgive or accept others.
  • The Chessmaster:
    • Thanks to him figuring out how to use the Attack Titans foresight, Grisha was able to manipulate various things after arriving at Paradis.
    • Captain Koch manipulated both his fellow Marleyans and the Paradisians to break Sasha and Niccolo up.
  • Composite Character: In universe, Helos is one inspired by two historical figures. George Marsh (a Marleyan restorationist of whine the Marsh Party is named after) and Jeremiah Ackerman (Fritz’s guard who betrayed him and stabbed him in the head to limit his power).
  • The Conspiracy: Two of them.
    • There is the Good Eldian Society formed from Liberian loyalists to Marley (including former warrior candidates) who continue to try and take the Founding Titan and destroy Paradis for Marley.
    • Dina Fritz-Jaeger has formed her own version of the Jeagarists to take control of Paradis for themselves and recreate the Eldian Empire should they deem Historia unfit.
  • Crazy-Prepared: Thanks to his visions, Grisha prepared for the plague outbreak well in advance. From stocking up on the proper medicines and determining how they should be altered, to collecting a sample of the plague from a clinic patient before the outbreak so he can make a vaccine.
  • Dead Guy Junior: Historia named her and highly implied to be Reiner's daughter Frieda after her deceased older half-sister.
  • Death by Adaptation: Word of God is that Yelena is dead since Zeke was captured by Paradis so he wasn’t able to stop her from being killed in battle.
  • Deadpan Snarker: When Niccolo recounts how he was easily caught by the guards after attempting to escape to rescue Sasha, Pieck snarks that it wasn't very dramatic.
  • Defeat Means Menial Labor: The captured (and depowered) warriors are forced to serve community service on Paradis. Annie is eager for her term to be up so she can join the MP’s while Reiner accepts his punishment.
  • Didn't Think This Through:
    • Discussed by the Paradisian guards to the Marleyan captives. They spent a hundred years Titanizing Eldians and sending them to the walls to punish them. But since they had the Founder all Marley was really doing was giving them fodder.
    • Uri Reiss created a vow of renouncing war specifically stating that the colossi cannot be controlled unless the outside world attacks Paradis first. However, the vow didn’t recognize the Warriors as an outside threat since they were Eldians despite being sent by Marley.
  • Disappointed in You: Karina is quite disappointed in Reiner after he refuses to help them overthrow Paradis and reveals that he didn’t earn the Armored Titan.
  • Does This Remind You of Anything?: After Marley’s surrender to Paradis, their formerly Annexed territories form the United Nations centered in Albion. Like how the UN formed after WW 2.
  • Evil Is Bigger: Rods Titan form is as big as the Colossal Titan while SITTING!
  • Even Evil Has Loved Ones:
    • Rod Reiss was so horrified seeing his family be slaughtered he Forgot About His Powers until after he had already run from Grisha.
    • Grisha DOES genuinely love his family (Carla, Mikasa, Eren) and loved his old one (Dina and Zeke) too. He also cares about Historia. But he cares about his mission above all.
  • Everyone Has Standards:
    • At least half of the Marleyan captives no longer want to exterminate EVERY Eldian on Paradis, acknowledging that they have spared them.
    • Grisha is proud that Eren was able to track down and kill Mikasa's kidnappers, though he had to make sure that Eren knew not to do the same thing to his bullies. Eren himself says that he would never kill someone unless they were a murderer or a slave driver since he isn't a monster. Grisha is relieved to hear that.
  • Fantastic Racism:
    • The Marleyans want all Subjects of Ymir subjugated at best and exterminated at worst.
    • The Marleyans also looked down on other nations and insultingly other nations hate Marley as a result.
    • Many Paradisians still want to unleash the Rumbling or atleast a partial one against Marley (Dina Fritz-Jeager and Darias Zackily being among them).
  • Green-Eyed Monster: Samuel hates Marleyans in general but she’s especially hostile to Niccolo due to his closeness to Sasha.
  • God-Emperor: This is how Rod Reiss sees himself with the Founder.
  • Handicapped Badass: Karl Fritz was stabbed in the head by his guard with a knife designed to break off into fragments inside his brain. While his Titan powers kept this from killing him it did limit his control over Eldians allowing the Tyburs and Marleyans to overthrow him. Though he was still able to muster enough willpower to create 65 million Colossal titans from his own cells.
  • Heel–Face Turn: Gabi chooses not to shoot Sasha with a tranquilizer dart after realizing that the Marleyans will not accept Eldians by doing what she thought she had to do. Even before that she came to accept that the people of the island are not inherently evil and see her own faults enough that she tried convincing her aunt and allies to spare some of the people on the island if they agreed to serve Marley (as opposed to wanting to ruthlessly kill them all like she did previously).
  • Heroic Sacrifice: Karl Fritz sacrificed himself to evaporate his own spine and craft tens of millions of colossal titans from his cells to protect Paradis and atone for accidentally causing Eldia’s downfall.
  • Honey Trap: Niccolo’s captain urges him to charm Sasha into revealing information about Paradis to them. It backfires with Niccolo becoming attached.
    • Pieck tries doing this with Jean.
  • Hoist by Their Own Petard:
    • Marley sent the warriors to Paradis to steal the Founder and wipe out the population so they can have the islands resources and the Founding Titan for their conquests. Instead, they ended up loosing not only the shifters minus the Warhammer, but they are forced to liberate all their annexed territories and grant equal rights to their Eldian population. What’s worse is that the countries they hurt over the last hundred years go to war with them to gain compensation for their various war crimes. And the Marleyans figure out too late that Queen Historia was able to convince Ymir Fritz to stop making Titans for them. Leaving Marley near defenseless against their enemies.
    • Also their various conquests led to many countries forming an Enemy Mine with Paradis well before they released their annexed nations. Most of which joined Paradis as a result.
  • Horrible Judge of Character: Karl Fritz really shouldn’t have trusted George Marsh or Maverick Tybur.
  • Huge Guy, Tiny Girl: Or inverse, relating to the Titan shifters and their love interests.
  • Irony: Histporia brought the Eldians from Liberio over to Paradis so they can be free. However, out of fear and hatred of the "Island Devils" many of them ended up isolating themselves in the Forest of the Giant Trees and building a 10-foot wall around themselves. Making their current livig situation not any different from when they were in Marley.
  • I Reject Your Reality: Gabi refuses to let go of the notion that the people of the island are devils that deserve death, despite her growing doubts. A few people call her out on this in that she’s just trying to convince herself because she still thinks if she’s ruthlessly loyal to Marley then her people will be given true freedom. She snaps out of this after hearing from her supposed Marleyan allies that they want the Eldians in Marley back in the zones after they take down Paradis.
  • Hypocrite: It is repeatedly pointed out that Marley has become just as bad as Eldia was despite their constant justification for abusing and mistreating Eldians in the present. It is even stated that Marley is nicknamed the "New Eldia".
  • Insecure Love Interest: Keith never confessed to Calra becuase he thought that he needed to be “special” first. Although, to be fair, her dismissal of his job didnt help.
  • In Spite of a Nail:
    • Despite Karl Fritz being less of a nihilist and trying to end the Titan War a better way he still ended up fleeing to Paradis and creating the Colossal Titans (albeit because he was actually overthrown and the Colossi were actually meant to protect his people)).
    • Also, the peoples of the walls memories were still altered, just by Karl’s son and only about Ymir and Eldia.
    • A Vow of Renouncing War was still made, but by Uri Reiss and designed to keep his brother Rod from unleashing the Rumbling without just cause.
    • Gabi and Falco end up once again working at the Braus family ranch, this time to keep an eye on Sasha's family for the Good Eldian Society to use them against them against Sasha. They are with Gabi's brother (who is named Ben) and Gabi's former neighbor (who is named Mia).
  • Jail Bait Taboo: Niccolo is uncomfortable with his captain asking him to seduce Sasha. Not so much because she’s a Paradisian or because he doesn’t like her, but because she’s 16 while he’s technically an adult at 19.
  • Jerk with a Heart of Gold: Gabi in the beginning, like her canon counterpart, was ruthless and happy to kill anyone considered an enemy of Marley. ESPECIALLY the islanders who she was raised to believe are responsible for all other Eldians suffering and are inherently evil. Even when she is confronted with Marleys own hypocrisy and the logical faults in her arguments she still holds onto the notion. However, as Falco points out, at the core of all of this is the hope/belief that if she is loyal to Marley (and emulates their views) then she will someday earn the equality and respect from them for her and her kind to be seen as real people. She is shaken after she realizes that way of thinking was wrong.
  • Jerkass Has a Point: Karina points out that Historia bringing the Liberians to Paradis forced them to leave the homes they were familiar with to start new lives in a new land with different cultural norms and writing style.
  • Jumped Off The Slippery Slope: Porco hated Paradisians before being brought to Paradis due to the Marleyan propaganda but now he is hellbent on killing them all (even if it isnt actually for the best of Eldians) to avenge his brother whose.
  • Karma Houdini: Porco sees Ymir as this since she (as a pure Titan) ate his brother Marcel and is currently living a comfy life as the queens bodyguard. This contributes to his increasing ruthlessness and desire for revenge.
  • Loophole Abuse: Uri Reiss placed a vow on the Founder to keep his brother from activating the Rumbling unless Marley or some other nation attacks first. But the Warriors attack and the Titan invasion doesn’t count since they are all Eldians.
  • Mythology Gag:
    • In canon Falco uses the named Ben and Mia for himself and Gabi while staying at the Braus family ranch. Here, Ben is the name of Gabi's actual brother and Mia was the name of her former neighbor (both of which are also working at the ranch with them) and Gabi didnt get along with her due to their conflicting beelifs on the Marelyans and Paradisians. hence why Gabi was annoyed with Falco choosing that name for her in canon. Here, Gabi chooses Thea (feminine for Theo, after Theo Magath) as her cover name.
    • Albion is mentioned as a country formerly annexed by Marley where the new United Nations is forming. Albion was the setting of a story in the AOT analogy series, however here it’s implied to be the “black London” seen in canon.
    • The cabin that Porco rents for the Good Eldian Society to use after kidnapping Sasha's mother and several children to blackmail Sasha is the same cabin that Mikasa originally lived in with her family.
  • The Mole: Pieck ends up selling Porco out to the Paradisians. Warning them about the GES’s plan to kidnap Connie’s family.
  • Morality Pet: Falco serves as this to Gabi.
  • My Country, Right or Wrong: This is the attitude of most of the Good Eldian Society members.
  • Named In The Adaptation:
    • Niccolo is given the last name "Fischer", and his captain is named Koch.
    • Ymir is given the last name Gottin (German for goddess). She got it right after Historia took the throne.
    • Grisha's parents are named Hans and Sophia.
    • Gabi's brother is named Ben while her father is Karian.
  • Noble Bigot: Niccolo’s family doesn’t hate Marleyan-Eldians to a genocidal degree and Niccolo himself doesn’t agree with violence against them. Though they still think Eldians should “know their place”.
  • No Good Deed Goes Unpunished: Keith brought Carla to Grisha to save her life. She ended up falling for him and marrying Grisha.
  • Oblivious to Love: Neither Grisha nor Carla had any idea that Keith was in love with her.
  • Oh God What Have I Done: Grisha after killing the Reiss family but failing to get the Founder.
  • Parental Substitute: Carla and Grisha to Mikasa and Historia.
  • Physical God: Whoever possesses the Founding Titan.
  • Screw This, I'm Out of Here!:
    • Grisha runs after Rod unleashes his Titan form.
    • Eren gets cold feet and tries to run when Grisha tries injecting him with Titan serum. But Grisha grabs his arm.
  • Second Love: Carla to Grisha. Though he does love her, part of their relationship was started by Grisha’s desire to see Erens birth through for his visions. He feels guilty over replacing Dina and Zeke with her and Eren.
  • Shout-Out:
    • The weapons that Paradis has include weapons featured in videogames such as the Genesis Blaster.
    • Sasha’s favorite thing to have for breakfast is watermelon. Sasha eats a whole watermelon for breakfast in the first episode of the anime adaptation of Attack on Junior High.
  • Supreme Chef: Niccolo.
  • Superior Successor: Sasha’s female Titan form can fire a sonic boom from her mouth thanks to meddling with the founder.
  • Spared By Adaptation:
    • Thanks to a special serum Grisha gave her, Mikasa was strong enough to lift the pillar off Carla and save her life.
    • The Paradisians were able to use the Founder to restore all of the (still living) Titans back to humans. Dina Fritz in particular is alive and part of Queen Historia’s court.
    • Ymir is still alive and serving as Historia’s guard.
    • Thanks to the Paradisians developing a method of safely transferring Titan powers, Bertolt is still alive despite Armin being the Colossal now and the thirteen year curse is averted.
  • Teen Pregnancy: Historia has had a child at 16 named Frieda.
  • Took a Level in Kindness: After Mikasa saves Carla, a grateful Eren hugs her and promises to never complain about her being stronger than him again.
  • The One That Got Away: Carla to Keith.
  • Too Good for This Sinful Earth: Frieda was the only member of her family who was against her father’s plan and tried to talk him out of it to no avail. She only fought Grisha to save the rest of her family.
  • Utopia Justifies the Means: Grisha tells Rod he fully supports him unleashing the rumbling so Eldia can rule what they spare. His only reason for trying to ursurp him is because Rod made it clear that he cares little about his people.
  • We Have Reserves: Rod Reiss allowed the Warriors to break down the wall thinking the attack will break the vow and allow him to activate the rumbling. It doesn’t work but he decides to let the Titans invade anyway because he doesn’t want to reveal his power just yet and he sees the sacrifice of a few of his citizens as meager.
  • Would Hurt a Child. Along with Would Hit a Girl, Grisha massacres the Reiss family bar Rod (though not by choice) which includes women and little kids to keep them from retaking the Founder.
  • Wham Episode: Children of the Forest 2/3 ends with Porco Gilliard shooting Sasha’s head off.
    • She recovers thanks to being a shifter.
