    Queen Raffi

Queen Raffi

https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/rafi_atismata.jpg

The queen of the New Kingdom of Atismata, Lisha's aunt and adoptive mother. She was the one who found Lux on the floor of the imperial capitol.

  • Alas, Poor Villain: After being separated from Sacred Eclipse, Raffi regains her sanity, but her body crumbles into dust. She uses her last words to tell Lisha she loves her and asks her to be happy with her friends.
  • Bad Guys Do the Dirty Work: She has several conspirators against her killed, and personally kills one of them herself. Considering that the Old Empire faction is made up of proudly corrupt people and that they're responsible for her Start of Darkness, their deaths don't come off as tragic.
  • The Chains of Commanding: Does not like being queen one bit. Still, she takes on the job because all the others candidates are wholly unsuitable for it either by corruption, incompetence, or both. This leads her to work with Fugil in order to eliminate all the corrupt nobles who scheme against her.
  • Dark Secret: She was the one who leaked intel on her brother to Waybra, an Old Empire supporter, mainly because she was in love with Waybra and wanted to protect him. With Fugil's help, she has Waybra and Sieg Kreuzer assassinated before they can reveal the truth.
  • Desperately Looking for a Purpose in Life: She states that she never truly lived or had any goals before allying with Fugil, due to being shunned by her peers for her infertility and being a Puppet Queen to all the scheming nobles. Once Fugil gives her a means to secure more political power for herself, she decides to make her ideal kingdom through any means necessary, believing that she can finally follow in her brother's footsteps.
  • Dissonant Serenity: She calmly kills an Old Empire faction member and later displays killing intent towards Lux with a smile on her face.
  • Even Evil Has Loved Ones: Combined with Love Makes You Evil. Despite becoming more self-serving after fusing with Sacred Eclipse, she genuinely believes her actions will allow Lisha to avoid the same discrimination that she went through. She loses most of her sanity as she devours people, but she still has enough of her ego to try to avoid killing Lisha and tries to convince the latter to go along with her plans.
  • I Did What I Had to Do: She agreed to the Kreutzer family's proposal to have Barzeride go fight the Ragnarok in exchange for the Kreutzer family taking control of the army afterwards, and then the extremely unreasonable demand that Lux both play the role of decoy to lure Abyss and Empire insurrectionists away from the capitol and win the Dragon festival tournament simultaneously because these were the best options she had to minimize the casualties. Fortunately, Barzeride kaiboshed the former himself with his impatient and heavy-handed criminal attempts to seize Krulcifer for himself, and the tournament was called off, on account of Hayes.
  • Face–Heel Turn: Either this or Evil All Along. She agrees to become the core of Fugil's worldwide alterations in order to bring peace to Atismata. It's unknown when she decided to side with him.
  • Fountain of Youth: After receiving Baptism several times, she ends up with the appearance of a young adult, to the point where she could pass as Lisha's sister. However, she has to have Fugil use <Endless> to make everyone see her as her actual age, or they'll get suspicious. Unfortunately for her, people start to notice the de-aging once Lux weakens <Endless> by stealing a Grand Force.
  • Hypocrisy Nod: Raffi is aware that the way she uses her new power is hypocritical, which is why she encourages Automaton!Arshalia to call her out for her questionable actions.
  • Kick the Dog: After Alma, her own niece, is captured by the kingdom, Raffi tortures her with Iblis's insanity inducing ability.
  • Lonely at the Top: There are very few people she can trust, and she's well aware that the vast majority of the nobles in the kingdom want to take the throne, and her life, and will, given the chance. Still, she can't just order the army to go after them, without some really solid evidence because they all have their own private armies and she has nowhere near enough loyal troops that can and will take them on.
  • Politically Correct Villain: Her goal is to create a nation where women are treated equally to men and she's at odds with the sexist Old Empire faction. She also averts being a Straw Feminist, as shown by how she takes advice from Fugil and respects Lux despite his opposition to her methods. While her goals are noble, she intends to achieve them by having Fugil use <Endless> to manipulate everyone's perception so she can take out her political enemies with no repercussion.
  • Pragmatic Villainy: Despite suspecting Lux of working against her, she knows she can't kill him without massive repercussions, especially when <Endless> is weakened by the theft of the Garden's Grand Force. She also removes his and Airi's collars, since Lux's efforts to fight the Lords earned him the respect of the populace.
  • Properly Paranoid: Despite thinking that Lux was probably tricked by <Endless>, Raffi has the members of Syvalles keep watch over him at all times just in case.
  • Secret-Keeper: Initially, she was the only one outside the Arcadia and Aingram families that knew Lux is the Black Hero. She also knows that the real Black Hero is Fugil.
  • She Who Fights Monsters: Played with and invoked. She claims that she personally confronted the Old Empire faction members in order to remind herself of how much she hates them for oppressing people from the shadows. When Automaton!Arshalia calls her out on her hypocrisy for secretly taking out political enemies, Raffi actually thanks her for pointing that out and believes that her allies' criticism will make her a good queen.
  • Treachery Cover-Up: At the end of Volume 19, her alliance with Fugil is kept secret from the public.
  • Unwitting Pawn: Double subverted. She thinks she can avoid being betrayed by Fugil as long as she doesn't oppress the masses and she knows that he'll occasionally help Lux for the sake of testing both of them, but she doesn't realize that Sacred Eclipse will consume her flesh and mind in a matter of months.
  • Walking Spoiler: The reveal of her being a villain and her unwitting role in dooming her brother adds a lot of spoilers to her entry.
  • Well-Intentioned Extremist: She believes working with Fugil to kill her political rivals and brainwash the populace is necessary to prevent the likes of the Old Empire faction from oppressing women.
  • With Great Power Comes Great Insanity: As a result of fusing with Sacred Eclipse, she loses most of her restraint, as shown when she calmly kills an Old Empire noble, tortures Alma with Iblis's power, and eats people.
  • Worthy Opponent: She remains Properly Paranoid of Lux scheming against her because she knows that he keeps overcoming impossible situations. At one point, she compares Lux to her brother in fighting for justice, and states that she wants to do the same, albeit in her own way.

    Barzeride Kreutzer

Barzeride Kreutzer

Drag-Ride: Aži Dahāka

https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/barzeride_kreuzer.jpg
Voiced by: Junji Majima

A noble of the Four Great Nobles.

  • Adaptational Villainy: A very downplayed example. To make Alterise more sympatheic in the anime, he ambushes her in the tavern by arriving one day early to try and rush the arranged marriage. In both the manga and light novel accounts, Alterise notifies Kreutzer that the marriage interview will be one day later than she actually planned, and didn't notify Krulcifer, at all, yet scheduled them both to have a meal with her at that particular tavern, so they'd meet each other, completely unprepared and unscripted. In either case, she was not only shocked that it went poorly, but tried to pin the blame on the protagonists for it.
  • Ambition Is Evil: Wants to take over the Kingdom.
  • Beat Them at Their Own Game: Manages to steal Lux's <Reload on Fire> and use it against him. Unfortunately for him, Lux had a lot more tricks up his sleeve.
  • Bitch in Sheep's Clothing: He tries to pass himself off as "helping" the Drag Knight trainees of the kingdom. He's really just a giant Glory Hound out to make a name for himself, and take Krulcifer to use as his own personal tool, and all the horror that entails.
  • Bureaucratically Arranged Marriage: To Krulcifer, without her prior knowledge or consent. She really does not approve.
  • Crippling the Competition: Before going into a duel, he hires mercenaries to intervene and kill his opponent and any witnesses allowing him to win by default. Lux has seen this "brilliant" tactic so many times, that he's literally sick of it, and able to counter it with ease.
  • Cruel and Unusual Death: Whatever Hayes did to him not only had him screaming in agony, but required a Gory Discretion Shot and had his blood splashing everywhere. It's worse in the light novel, where she stomps on him as he dies.
  • Did Not See That Coming: Really wasn't expecting Lux to be aware of his dirty tricks, and have counters for them, even though Lux told him that he's seen his "brilliant" strategy used so many times that he's literally sick of it.
  • Dirty Coward: The moment he realizes he's outmatched, and his evil gloating has been recorded, he tries to run.
  • Engagement Challenge: He forces Lux to duel him for Krulcifer's hand in marriage. He loses, badly.
  • Entitled to Have You: To Krulcifer. He insists on calling her "my future bride," ignoring her obvious disdain. He summarily does not take it well when she reminds him that they're complete strangers to each other. Even Lux could read his intent to completely subjugate and dominate her.
  • Evil Cannot Comprehend Good: He can only think in terms of using people and somehow assumes Lux, of all people, is doing the same to Krulcifer.
  • Evil Gloating: Brags about the duel being rigged, and having mercenaries nearby to kill Lux and kidnap Krulcifer. This comes back to bite him, hard.
  • Fake Ultimate Hero: He relies on stealing the energy of his comrades to finish off the enemies and hog all the glory. Hayes even points out that without <Avesta>, he's not that good of a Drag-Ride pilot. She even implies she used some kind of drug to temporarily increase his compatibility.
  • Faux Affably Evil: When introduced, his speech is very polite, but his tone couldn't be more condescending if he tried.
  • Glory Hound: All he cares about is making a name for himself. Everyone and everything in his sight is merely a tool to that end. He once tries to goad Lux into abandoning the ruins exploration mission to engage in a pointless "who can kill the most Abyss fastest" contest, promising to call off the Engagement Challenge if Lux wins. Lux wisely does not rise to the bait.
  • Nice Job Fixing It, Villain: His schemes to force Krulcifer to marry him results in a duel that destroys Azi Dahaka beyond repair, taking it out of the story until the Lords use Avalon's facility to recreate it.
  • Power Parasite: His Divine Drag-Ride's Divine Raiment <Avesta> can steal from other Drag-Rides their armaments, Divine Raiment, and energy if <Aži Dahāka> comes in physical contact with the Drag-Ride. However, according to Hayes, using too many abilities at the same time decreases the effectiveness of each.
  • Shoulder Cannon: <Devil's Glow> is two cannons; one on each shoulder.
  • Stupid Evil: If he had just bid his time, and at least pretended to be a decent and honorable man, instead of a raging Glory Hound, and antagonized everyone he came across for shits and giggles, Krulcifer might have been pressured into marrying him because she couldn't voice a rational objection. Because he was heavy handed, arrogant, impatient, and cowardly, he not only screwed himself over, but his entire house.
  • Unfriendly Fire: While shooting at the Abyss in episode 4, he fired very nearly through the girls he had promised to protect earlier that episode.
  • Unskilled, but Strong: As shown by Mishis's handling of Azi Dahaka, Barzeride didn't have the skill to make use of its full potential and actually squandered its abilities by trying to use too many stolen Divine Raiments and Armaments simultaneously. Hayes implies that he used Elixir to increase his aptitude, which wasn't enough to make up for his poor strategy.
  • Wake-Up Call Boss: Unlike with Velvet Barth, Lux couldn't curb stomp him easily due to his Divine Rainment.
  • Well-Intentioned Extremist: Tries to justify his behavior by claiming he needs Krulcifer, and the lost technology to fight the Abyss, Ragnarok, which was only sealed away, at great cost, by the Empire. Lux is not fooled.
  • You Have Outlived Your Usefulness: This fate is invoked on him in episode 7, in his prison cell, much to everyone's surprise.

    Warg Kreutzer
One of the Four Great Nobles and Barzeride's father. He is later deposed from his position.

    Sieg Kreutzer
Warg's second son and Barzeride's younger brother.

    Dobar Fest

Dobar Fest

A Marquis of Atismata as well as a distant relative of the queen.
  • Adapted Out: He doesn't appear in the anime at all.
  • Ain't Too Proud to Beg: After Yoruka kills his guards, he futilely attempts to bribe her with promises of wealth and status.
  • Bitch in Sheep's Clothing: He pretends to cooperate with the Knight Squadron in searching the Ruins, but in reality, he just wants to take the treasure for himself. He becomes Faux Affably Evil when he maintains his polite demeanor while ordering Yoruka and his minions to kill Airi.
  • Evil Is Petty: His main reason for wanting the Knight Squadron dead is to prevent any evidence that his group accidentally unleashed an Abyss upon Ries Island during their reckless crusade in the Ruins. His secondary reason is because he doesn't want female knights upstaging male ones.
  • Obviously Evil: Despite his courteous nature, Lux can see the Greed in his eyes.
  • Would Hurt a Child: He's willing to order his minions to kill Airi because she overheard their plan to kill the Knight Squadron. This works against him because Yoruka still needs Airi alive, causing his hired gun to kill him and his entire squad.

    Waybra Hemt
A noble of the New Kingdom and a former noble of the Old Empire. He is also Raffi's former lover and attempts to exploit this information, but is killed before he can do anything with it.
  • Honey Trap: Waybra romanced Raffi in the past, only to use her to get intel on the rebellion, resulting in her brother getting killed and the rebellion nearly defeated.
  • Karma Houdini Warranty: He was allowed a large degree of freedom despite his role in nearly stopping Count Atismata's rebellion and seducing Raffi. He eventually receives his just desserts when Raffi sends the Automata to kill him.

    Dilwy Froias

Dilwy Froias

Drag-ride: Ex-Wyvern

A veteran knight of the New Kingdom.
  • Bitch in Sheep's Clothing: His mild-mannered personality is just a facade.
  • Career-Ending Injury: He received an injury to his right hand, preventing him from reaching his full potential as a Drag-ride pilot.
  • Evil Counterpart: Like Airi, he is physically unable to reach his full potential as a Drag-knight despite having dreams to excel as one and is an avid researcher of the Ruins. Unlike Airi, who is mostly fine with supporting her allies as Mission Control, Dilwy won't settle for anything less than re-attaining his prime, even if it means going insane from using the Elixir and killing innocent students.
  • Hoist by His Own Petard: Overdosing on Elixir would have killed him after a while, though Greifer kills him before that.
  • One-Winged Angel: After stabbing his heart with the Elixir dagger, his skin turns dark, his hair turns white, and his eyes glow red. His nature becomes similar to an Abyss, as shown when he turns into dust upon death.
  • Red Baron: He's known as the Silver Flash for his skill in using Shot Blade, a weapon that can release arrow-like shots as it slashes.
  • Super Mode: He gains Elixir from a mysterious cloaked figure, Fugil, which gives him enough concentration to reproduce the "Battle Array - Vicissitudes" skill that Singlen used.
  • To Be a Master: Combined with It's All About Me. He has no loyalty to Arcadia, Atismata, or the Dragon Marauders. He's only concerned with being the greatest Drag-knight.
  • Unwitting Pawn: Fugil gives him Elixir so he would make his move, out himself as a traitor, and catch the attention of the Seven Paladins, all in a gambit to unite the world against the Dragon Marauders.
  • With Great Power Comes Great Insanity: When he's cornered by Lux and Greifer, he overdoses on Elixir and loses whatever sanity he had left.
