Main Characters
Gakuro Yajima
The Hero of the manga, an Extreme Doormat teenager who one day accidentally finds the room where Nue was sealed, following the appearance of a Level 2 spirit on his classroom which almost killed all the students there Gakuro forges a pact with Nue which sets him on the path of becoming something strong enough to protect everybody.
- Accidental Pervert: Gakuro sometimes gets involved in some slightly pervert situation against his will, like catching a glimple of Kazusa's panties, or accidentally grabbing Tsujita's boob.
- Butt-Monkey: Gakuro's misfortune is the biggest source of humor in the manga, mostly as a result of being forced to take part in Nue's silly plans.
- Casting a Shadow: Inverted: his Hollow Weapon works by absorbing shadows to increase it’s own power.
- Character Development: Slowly Gakuro becomes more confident in himself starts to doubt less before acting.
- Dark and Troubled Past: Gakuto's father died protecting him and Shitotsu from a Level 3 spirit at the cost of his life, this event keeps haunting Gakuro in the present and is his main motivation to become stronger.
- Death of a Thousand Cuts: "Zenoblade" allows Gakuro to instantly produce a lot of slashes upon an enemy, currently the slashes are too shallow to be lethal but still work as a good distraction.
- Determinator: Once Gakuro starts fighting he will never back down and will keep standing up no matter how many times he is beaten.
- Extreme Doormat: His biggest flaw is how Gakuro is unwilling to stand up for himself and instead follows what others tell him to avoid any conflict. After becoming a Captain and facing off against a Level 3, he’s trying to be more proactive.
- Like Father, Like Son: Going by flashbacks Gakuro's father was also a rather awkward but earnest person who was able to easily earn other's trust.
- Gakuro also accidentally ends up following his father's footsteps of being an exorcist and even becoming a Branch Captain.
Nue
A level 5 spirit (the highest level in existence) sealed in a room of Gakuro's school, she takes interest in the boy due being the first person to find her in decades, eventually they form a pact with Nue promising she will give him the power to protect others.
- Big Damn Heroes: A regular occurrence from her, usually showing up when Gakuro is really far out of his depth.
- Big Good: She is this as the one who guides Gakuro on his quest to become a great protector, and it gets cemented after revealing she wants to help the exorcists in dealing with the other Hyo without having to sacrifice others.
- The Chessmaster: Nue is very competent at manipulating people to her benefit, either to cause a silly scene or during serious moments like using Moroyoki's attack to reveal her existence to later set her plan to eliminate the other Hyo in motion.
- Eldritch Abomination: The brief glimpse of Nue's true form
◊ tells us she is totally this. - The Gadfly: Nue really enjoys messing with others and causing extremely silly situations out of amusement, most of the time putting poor Gakuro in ankward situations.
- Gamer Chick: One of Nue's hobbies is playing all kind of videogames, from console to computer games.
- Head-Turning Beauty: A lot of characters comment on how pretty she is, even inmediatly charming all the male students in Gakuro's class.Student: Yajima!! Who was that girl you were with this morning?!Zenno: Yeah, she[Nue] was a real hottie!
- I Am Not Left-Handed: Pulls this during the fight against Moroyoki by revealing a second Hollow weapon.
- Story-Breaker Power: It clear that Nue's true power is far beyond pretty much the whole cast, if she weren't sealed there would be no issue that stands any chance against her.
Sixth Exorcist Elimination Squad
Kazusa Suou
An exorcist attending the same school as Gakuro, she becomes his senpai in matters related to exorcising spirits.
- Demonic Possession: Happens in chapter 27, the spirit causes her to speak her innermost thoughts, also gave her enough Super-Strength to break a desk in one punch and to create gusts of wind that can rip clothes.
- Locked Out of the Loop: Suou was unaware of Nue's true identity, believing the spirit's words of being Gakuro's sister, she eventually get filled by her Vice-Captain by the time the Six Squad is stablished.
- Mundane Utility: Uses the memory wiping technique on Gakuro after he catches a glimpse of her panties.
- School Idol: She is known as one of "The Three Goddesses of North High" aka one of the prettiest girls in the school, though Suou doesn't seem to really care about that title.
- Why Did It Have to Be Snakes?: Hates spiders, even things in their shapes like a shikigami.
Shiroja Fujino
An exorcist that transfers to Gakuro's class with the mission of forming a pact with Nue.
- Child Soldier: Fujino has been fighting spirits since she was very young.
- Commonality Connection: At first she thought she and Gakuro were similar due their similar abilities to make pacts with spirits and tragic past. This would get subverted when she sees he has a much happier life with people that cares for him, something Fujino never had and desperately wishes to experience.
- Defeat Means Friendship: Finally accepts Gakuro as a friend after he defeats her.
- I Just Want to Be Loved: Shiroha never received any love in the past which made her yearn for any kind of affection, one of her reasons to form a pact with Nue is hope that the spirit will treat the girl as kindly as she does with Gakuro.
- Minion Master: Can use her family's shikigami which involves summoning lots of crows.
- Morph Weapon: Shiroha's Hollow weapon usually takes the form of a trident with the middle prong being shorter than the others, the prongs can extend in any direction like tentacles and it can also change into a scythe.
- The Nose Knows: Fujino has the ability to read people's emotion to a certain degree through their scent.
- Seeing Through Another's Eyes: Her family used a spell that allows them to see what Shiroha witness, it also seems to record what she saw as Moroyoki watched her fight against Nue much later.
- Starter Villain: The first threat Gakuro and Nue face that’s on Gakuro’s level.
- The Stoic: Shiroha's face doesn't changes from a neutral expression.
- Not So Stoic: She finally breaks down during her fight against Gakuro due feeling anger that someone so weak claimed he could save her, which only gets worse at Gakuro's refusal to give up.
Kyokotsu
A spirit who serves the Fujino family and currently pacted with Shiroha.
- Blood Knight: Enjoys fighting strong opponents, like being happy at Nue's display of her power.
- Everybody Has Standards: Even he finds Shiroha's treatment at the hands of her clan deplorable, even if he doesn't says it directly.
- Eye Scream: Kyokotsu's real form has one eye stitched while the other is impaled by something.
- Familiar: Acts as this for the Fujinos, though going by Shiroha's comment he isn't really loyal to them and would leave if they make him unhappy.
- Living Shadow: His true form is basically this.
Shitotsu Tomesode
An exorcist from the Elimination Squad Fourth Branch which got transferred to the newly stablished Sixth Brach, also Gakuro's estranged adoptive sister.
- Happily Adopted: Flashbacks show that Shitotsu lived a happy life with her adoptive father and brother.
- Jerk with a Heart of Gold: In her introduction Shitotsu was extremely rude towards Gakuro but it's shown that beneath those harsh words she genuinely cares for him.
- Revenge: Wishes to eliminate the level 3 spirit that killed her dad.
- Shipper on Deck: Asks Gakuro which girl he likes between Suou and Fujino, encouraging him to confess by saying he actually had a chance with any of them.
- Sibling Yin-Yang: Gakuro is a socially awkward teen who struggles to join conversations, Shitotsu is a social butterfly who has no issue talking with others.
Exorcists
Branch Captains
Yoshiya Sumeragi
Captain of the first branch.
- Cool Old Guy: He is the oldest active exorcist seen and from the little he talked he is always ready to encourage younger people.
- Facial Markings: Has one on his left eye, it circles his eye and has two lines, one extending downwards and the other upwards.
Komiyako Shimako
Captain of the second branch.
Doryo Suga
Captain of the third branch.
- Nice Guy: From the little we see he is this, like how he treated kindly the lower rank exorcists that bought them tea.
Heiichi Igari
Captain of the fourth branch
- Benevolent Boss: Igari has shown to really care for her subordinates as she knows the name of every single of them.
- Good Is Not Soft: Igari is not a bad person but she had no issue reminding Gakuro how he only became a captain as part of the deal with Nue, despite this she genuinely comforted him when he was feeling down due his subordinates got hurt.
- My Greatest Failure: During her first mission as a captain she lost four subordinates, even years later Igari still feels sad at what happened.
Captain Fujino
The unnamed captain of the fifth branch.
- The Ghost: They were absent from the captain's assembly, the only thing we know is their surname and their silhouette from the first page of chapter 24.
The Fujino Clan
The current head
The person who assigned Shiroha to make a pact with Nue.
- Jerkass: He treats Shiroha like nothing but a tool, after she has fun at beach the lord summons her and the next day poor girl goes to school covered in bandages.
Moroyoki Fujino
A special-class exorcist who was assigned to eliminate Shiroha after her failure to make a pact with Nue.
- Awesome, but Impractical: His shikigami Kurano-Sakimichi is so powerful that its existence was compared to a natural disaster, but it leaves Moroyoki unable to fight for one month after using it.
- Break Them by Talking: Attempts to disuade Gakuro from helping Nue by explaining that due her existence as a Hyo she is the cause of the spirits haunting the school and helping her makes the boy an enemy of the exorcists, to Moroyoki's surprise Gakuro doesn't falters.
- The Mentor: He's mentioned to have been Shiroha and Suo's instructor among many other exorcists.
- My Master, Right or Wrong: Displays shades of this by following the lord's order of killing Shiroha despite Moroyoki voicing his displeasure at having to kill another disciple.
- Unwitting Pawn: Was this to Nue, she used their battle to reveal her existence to the exorcist HQ despite Moroyoki's efforts, this allowed her to set her plans to eliminate the other Hyo in motion.
Other Exorcists
Koga, Machida and Tsujita
Exorcists assigned to security duty at the beach.
- Barrier Maiden: Machida's Hollow Weapon can be used to create a protective wall, unfortunately it takes effort to maintain so she is left unable to fight.
- The Bus Came Back: Koga reappears during the captain's assembly, having been choosen by the prophets to serve tea alongside Suo.
- The Gadfly: Tsujita spends a lot of time of their duty teasing poor Gakuro, specially after he accidentally grabs her boob.
- Hoist by His Own Petard: Tsujita's wish to win against Shiroha made her use a talisman that lures spirits, unfortunately this caused the spirits to merge into two level 2 spirits which were too much for the team and she only survived thanks to Gakuro.
- Jerkass Realization: Tsujita goes through this after being saved by Gakuro and Shiroha, realizing she was unnecessarily rude to both and apologizes to them.
- Only Sane Man: Machida seems to be this of the group as she didn't tease Gakuro during the mini-arc.
Allied Spirits
Kathy
A spirit who has been Nue's friend for quite some time.
- Cat Girl: She seems to be this going by her hair decorations that look like cat ears.
- Thinking Up Portals: She has displayed this power as seen when she first appears walking through one, it's currently unknown if she has any limit when creating them.
Karasu Tengu
A spirit living in Mitori Village as its guardian, also an old acquaintance of Nue.
- Barrier Maiden: A male example. His abilities have protected the mountain where Mitori Village is located from spirits for centuries.
- Large Ham: Karasu displays this by randomly starting to shout and dance to hype things up.
- Lilliputians: Karasu seems to be naturally small, enough to fit in a pocket without issue.
- Power Perversion Potential: He can erase a person's presence, perfect to spy on someone bathing as he claimed to have done to Nue in the past (not that it worked on her).
