The Admirabilis

    In General
  • Anti-Villain: Ventricosus and Aculeatus, at the very least, were forced into luring a Gem into the clutches of the Lunarians in exchange for their freedom. They otherwise would have left well enough alone, and Ventricosus in particular seemed to like the Lustrous and thinks them cute.
  • Back from the Dead: When the races all beg for oblivion, Ventricosus, Aculeatus, and Variegatus all appear as the frontmost Admirabilis. In the middle of Volume 12, the Lunarians claim that they were researching ways to obtain the memories from long deceased Admirabilis, or finding where those memories ended up in a manner similar to the Lustrous' inclusions collecting in a moon crater. Their appearance at the end implies the Lunarians succeeded.
  • Clothing Appendage: The crown-like appendage that appears on Venticosus and Variegatus is a symbol of royalty. When an Admirabilis becomes a Ruler, their head swells to include that "crown".
  • Deal with the Devil: They chose to become mindless slaves on the moon to avoid starving to death.
  • From Bad to Worse: The universe really has it in for these guys. Due to resources on Earth becoming scarcer by the year, their people starved for a very long time, even apparently to the point of eating their own young and cannibalizing to survive. They make a deal with the Lunarians and get taken to the Moon, but they're treated as little more than exotic pets and slaves. Eventually they get back to Earth and are able to thrive for a while, but the ones on the Moon get bred down to even more harmless slugs, the ones on Earth mostly devolve into unintelligent compact forms, and the ones who avoided all of that are being taken back to the Moon—not for their own good, but simply to isolate Phos further as they absorb all of Sensei's power.
  • Gender Rarity Value: According to the 11th volume's special booklet, female Admirabilis outnumber the males by a ratio of 1000 to 1. They're explosive breeders like many fish species, so they don't necessarily need many males as long as they take care of the rare few well.
  • Heir Club for Men: Only Admirabilis women are able to become Rulers, according to the Volume 11 extras.
  • Hufflepuff House: Of the three races, they are the least focused on and generally have the least amount of important representatives in the story overall. Much of what we learn about them is from second-hand sources like the Lunarians or species guides. The last time they were seen in a major way was during the post-Winter arc.
  • Made a Slave: Currently, the majority of the Admirabilis are held captive on the Moon eating Moon dust most of the time. In addition, they've (mostly) been brainwashed to be compliant. Perhaps averted, since the Lunarians claim they came to the moon willingly during a famine but passed on the story poorly to their descendants.
  • No Party Like a Donner Party: In particularly horrible times of famine, the Lunarians noted that the Admirabilis resorted to eating their own young in order to satiate themselves.
  • Our Mermaids Are Different: They're humanoid sea creatures in the water with a very human torso and face but a more fishy tail, but on the surface they're depicted as giant slugs.
  • Out of Focus: The species as a whole loses focus after the manga's first arc and are dealt with offscreen on the Moon.
  • Removable Shell: Many of the Admirabilis have shells not attached to their body, including Ventricosus and Aculeatus. Later members of the species would have them bonded to their flesh, which poises a problem for Phos as they wanted to harvest the shells for the inclusions and powdered gem pieces of previously taken Gems.
  • Resistance as Planned: Aechmea admits that Ventricosus's rebellion was just one of many opportunities he provided for Phos to gain stronger body parts and elements from the other two humanity subspecies.
  • Throw the Dog a Bone: These guys have had it rough for thousands of years, and despite them wanting to survive as an independent species, they've suffered famines and getting caught as collateral in the middle of the Gem-Lunarian conflict. At the very least, they were bred out of extinction levels during the 10,000 year wait for oblivion.
  • Undying Loyalty: Thanks to Phos freeing Aculeatus and helping Ventricosus, and due to carrying the scent of the Ruler, the entire race adores Phos and sees the Gem as a legendary hero. They are ready and willing to help the Gem with any plan, including getting rid of their own shells even if the newer descendants have them decidedly attached to their flesh.
  • Voluntary Shapeshifter: Can take on more human-like forms when in the ocean.
  • We Are as Mayflies: They may not be humans, but they're the closest of the three races to being Humanity. They have sexes, can reproduce, and have an extraordinarily short lifespan compared to the nigh immortal Lustrous and Lunarians. Phos has to learn this the hard way when they discover Variegatus in Ventricosus' place as King.

    Ventricosus

Ventricosus

Ruler.

Voiced by: Chiwa Saitō (Japanese), Luci Christian (English)

The King of the Admirabilis, who manages to strike a deal to free herself and her brother from the Moon People.

  • All Women Are Lustful: She openly lusts over Master Kongo by calling him a "hunk." She also waxes poetic about the Lustrous, finding them all cute and admitting that she liked the hot-and-cold nature of Bort and Cinnabar.
  • Ambiguously Bi: Makes playful flirtatious remarks about the female-presenting Lustrous and Kongo, though how much of it is serious or in jest isn't clear.
  • An Arm and a Leg: After defying the Lunarians and attempting to bargain for her brother and the implicit (temporary) safety of the Lustrous with Phos's body, the Lunarians burn her right arm off.
  • Attack of the 50-Foot Whatever: Her giant slug form.
  • Big-Breast Pride: She describes her breasts, or her "water jugs" as Phos calls them, as the most prized and precious part of her body.
  • Brainwashed and Crazy: At the beginning, when used by the Moon People. Subverted when we later find out that she was the only one they could not brainwash.
  • Brother–Sister Incest: Implied, given Variegatus reigns over a small colony of Admirabilis after the time skip and she and Aculaetus were the last Admirabilis left on Earth.
  • Buxom Beauty Standard: Clearly seems to believe so, though Phos finds her breasts vulgar.
  • Clothing Appendage: Her dress is part of her body.
  • Doomed Hometown: The Lunarians, according to her, wiped out the Admirabilis on Earth, and those that remained we brought up to the moon to be servile and bred to be dumb. Ventricosus claims that their Earth homelands haven't been touched in years, and makes it her personal mission to return there.
  • Forced Transformation: Converted into a giant mindless slug to work for the Moon People.
  • Healing Factor: Her head gets split open during her initial fight with the Gems, but she quickly heals from the damage.
  • Heel–Face Turn: By the beginning of the story she betrays Phos while striking a deal and trying to recover her brother from the Moon People, but eventually regrets her actions and saves him.
  • Heel Realization: Which prompts her to stop her brother against Phos, since she knows they would be the same as the Moon People.
  • Killed Offscreen: Not killed, but is long dead by the time Phos wakes up and eventually meets her descendant.
  • Last of His Kind: The last of the Rulers. That is, until she has children and descendants.
  • Made a Slave: Like all her species, by the Moon People.
  • Mr. Exposition: Explains the story about the three species, the world and the humans to Phos.
  • My Greatest Failure: According to Variegatus, she regretted tricking Phos for the rest of her life, enough that this guilt has made it into the legends of the new Earth Admirabilis colony.
  • Red Baron: The Ruler Of Shells.
  • Requisite Royal Regalia: While they aren't clothes but more like part of her body, they resemble a fancy queen dress.
  • Ridiculously Cute Critter: Her dehydrated slug form is this, even for most of the gems.
  • She Is the King: Despite looking obviously female, she's still considered the King of the Admirabilis.
  • Why Did It Have to Be Snakes?: She really doesn't like the jellyfish. To be fair, they did swarm her out of curiosity when she first went into their pond, but even after she regains her form she has nothing kind to say about them.
  • You Said You Would Let Them Go: While she hates what the Lunarians have done to her people, she worked with them to capture Phos so she could free Aculeatus along with herself. Unfortunately, they rescind on the deal and ask her for more Gems; and when she protests, they burn her arm off.

    Aculeatus

Aculeatus

Voiced by: Yuko Sanpei (Japanese), Maggie Flecknoe (English)

The younger brother of Ventricosus, and a warrior. Also captured and brainwashed by the Moon People.

  • Aloof Big Brother: Inverted. He's younger than Ventricosus, but he plays the same role.
  • Attack of the 50-Foot Whatever: As the giant mindless slug, he is even bigger than his sister.
  • Big Eater: According to Ventricosus. The smell of food is enough to make him recover his sanity for a while.
  • Blood Knight: Again, according to Ventricosus. He shows to be an incredible fighter himself.
  • Brainwashed and Crazy: Turned into a giant mindless slug, although he gets better and attacks his captors in return.
  • Brother–Sister Incest: Implied, given Variegatus reigns over a small colony of Admirabilis after the time skip and he and Ventricosus were the last Admirabilis left on Earth.
  • Combat Tentacles: In both forms he fights like this, and the tentacles themselves pack quite the punching power.
  • Curb-Stomp Battle: His battle against the Moon People is this. It probably helps that he was angered by years of enslavement.
  • Fantastic Racism: Against the Moon People, with good reason.
  • Forced Transformation: Converted into a giant mindless slug to work for the Moon People.
  • Killed Offscreen: Not killed, but is long dead by the time Phos wakes up and eventually meets his descendant.
  • Last of His Kind: The last of the Rulers.
  • Made a Slave: Like most of his species.
  • Pet the Dog: He was willing to use Phos as a bargaining chip for the rest of his family and kin, but after Ventricosus decides to spare Phos, Aculeatus honors her by helping her bring the Gem back to shore. In the anime, he even breaks off parts of his shell that Phos eventually uses as new legs.
  • The Sociopath: Doesn't seem to have the same moral compass that his sister has and if not for her he could have hurt Phos too.
  • Sole Survivor: Along with Ventricosus.
  • Tall, Dark, and Handsome: Verily so.

    Variegatus

Variegatus

Ventricosus' descendant, and the fifth Ruler of the Admirabilis.

  • Accidental Misnaming: Refers to Phos as Pozpopilizliz, as that is how their name passed over when the legend got told and retold.
  • All Women Are Lustful: Calls all the Lustrous beautiful, similar to how Ventricosus lusted over Sensei.
  • And Another Thing...: Used when saying goodbye to Phos, she stops two times and comes back: first to tell them about the Humans—the legend Phos was seeking to hear—and then to tell them that she wishes to go to the Moon, which makes Phos realize that's what Lapis Lazuli wanted them to do.
  • Motor Mouth: She is really talkative.
  • Plucky Girl: She set out to retrieve proof of forgiveness from Phos, but the journey from their kingdom to the Lustrous' home is supposedly dangerous especially for people going alone. Nevertheless, she gets there by herself and successfully leaves with the proof she so wanted.
  • Ridiculously Cute Critter: Like Ventricosus, except she is a nudibranch.
  • Requisite Royal Regalia: Her body looks like a pimped out dress and has an overall princess-like appearance.
  • Sketchy Successor: She was told she lacked the wits the older elders had, so it's possible her people saw her like this.
