     Boy Scout Troop 192

https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/bs-aaron_3830.jpg

Abdowmassy, Aaron

Aaron is a Boy Scout in Troop 192 at the Church in the Acres. He was once the Troop's Senior Patrol Leader, but decided not to seek the position again when his term was up and presently holds a less active roll in the Troop's leadership.

In 1997, Aaron won a trip to China in a contest in Boys Life magazine. While there, he and his group visited the Training Ground of Cursed Springs, Jusenkyo, where he fell into Yaazuniichuan, or Spring of Drowned Duck. Because of this, when dowsed with cold water, Aaron turns into a duck. Warm water reverses this effect.

After a group of Girl Scouts begins meeting at the Church in the Acres, Aaron meets Kirstin Porter. The two of them develop feelings for each other, but never seem sure what to do about them.

Since the election of Justy Yung as Senior Patrol Leader, Aaron has become a member of the Garden Snake Patrol.

Aaron is based on a real person, although his last name has been changed due to Old Shame. First appearance: Boy Scouts ½, part 1.

  • Garden Snake Patrol: Number Two — Aaron doesn't hold the position of Assistant Patrol Leader, but in situations that spicifically concern the cursed members of the patrol (and their Secret Keepers) he is typically Mike's right hand.

Atanian, Matthew (Hayes, Matty)

Matt is an Assistant Scoutmaster with Boy Scout Troop 192. He was once a youth in the troop, and stayed active after earning the Eagle rank. He continued being active until turning 18, when he became one of the Troop's adult leaders.

Matt is well known (or, as he puts it, infamous) in the Boy Scouts both because of his position on the local Order of the Arrow Lodge's Executive Board and his unique management of the Summer Camp Trading Post in 1995 and 1996.

Matt is in a difficult time where, even though he is an adult in the troop, he is still viewed by many of the troop's other adults as if he were still one of the youth. Matt unintentionally reinforces this view by maintaining his close friendships with some of the troop's youth, with whom he has more in common then he does with many of the other adults.

When on a trip to China, Matt visited the Training Ground of Cursed Springs, Jusenkyo, where he fell into Nyanniichuan, or Spring of Drowned Girl. Because of this, when dowsed with cold water, Matt turns into a female version of himself. Warm water reverses this effect. When in his female body, he has assumed the name, "Matty Hayes."

Matt describes himself as an Otaku, or obsessed fan, of anime and manga. He also has a more then healthy interest in Science Fiction and British Comedy. These are interests that he has shared with some of the youth in the Troop, particularly Aaron and Mike.

After a Girl Scout Troop begins meeting at the Church in the Acres, Matt takes a strong liking to one of the Girl Scout Leaders, Sarah Porter. Unfortunately, Sarah despises him. However, do in large part to urging by Aaron and Kirstin, Matt persists in his interest in Sarah. Sarah, unaware that Matt and "Matty" are the same person, becomes good friends with Matty, causing much confusion and turmoil within Matt.

Matt is based on a real person. First appearance: Boy Scouts ½, part 1.

  • Garden Snake Patrol: Big Brother Mentor - The older friend of most of the patrol, who often seeks to advise or assist them without commanding them.
  • One-Steve Limit: Shares his first name with Matthew Abert and Matthew Swett.
  • Trenchcoat Brigade: When in civilian dress, he'll always wears a black trenchcoat when outside - no matter the season or external temperature - to go with his trademark black fedora. He'll also wear it with his Boy Scout uniform if it is raining.

https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/bs-becker_9415.jpg

Becker, Jon

A member of Boy Scout Troop 192. Friends with Aaron, Matt, Mike, and the Bills. He does not know about their curses, however.Becker can often be seen wearing headphones, with odd music blaring from them at an unspeakable volume. When he's not wearing them, he is a normal, productive member of society. Unfortunately, this is not the majority of the time, and he usually stands around, getting in people's way, and shouting, "WHAT?"

Since the election of Justy Yung as Senior Patrol Leader, Jon has become a member of the Garden Snake Patrol.

Becker is based on a real person. First appearance: Boy Scouts ½, part 5.

  • Ascended Extra: A minor character (although he did once get his own sub-plot), Becker gets much more to do in the Kenny's Laboratory Spin-Off, where he becomes Kenny's Sidekick.
  • Garden Snake Patrol: The Team Normal - The only member of the patrol to not be cursed or have some other major distinguishing characteristic. (Well, aside from his omnipresent headphones.) He doesn't do much to distinguish himself until his Spin-Off team-up with Kenny.
  • Sensory Self Abuse: His headphones.

https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/bg-gamble_4743.jpg

Gamble, Eric

Briefly joining Troop 192 during the late spring of 1998, Eric was a heavyset and ambitious young boy. When Justy Yung was looking for a new Assistant Senior Patrol Leader, Eric quickly accepted the position thinking it would be his first step towards getting power of his own. He soon became disillusioned, however, when it became clear that Justy expected him to act as little more then a manservant. He departed Troop 192, never to be seen again, with a declaration of, "Screw you guys, I'm going home!"

First appearance: Boy Scouts ½, part 23.

  • Expy: He is little more then a very thinly veiled copy of Eric Cartman, to the extent that Cartman has even been used for this page's image. In fact, the only major change seems to be his last name, in order to make a...
  • Stealth Pun: During his absence, Proctor was replaced by Gamble.

https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/gelinas_7938.jpg

Gelinas, William "Billy"

Bill is a Boy Scout in Troop 192 at the Church in the Acres. Bill is the Troop's immediate past Senior Patrol Leader, but when his term is ended he did not seek reelection.

When on a trip to China, Bill visited the Training Ground of Cursed Springs, Jusenkyo, where he fell into Gou-niichuan, or Spring of Drowned Dog. Because of this, when dowsed with cold water, Bill turns into a dog. Warm water reverses the effect.

Of those members of the Troop who are cursed, Bill seems to be the most "normal" of the group. This is not to say that he is without his own particular eccentricities, but they seem to be more subtle and less definable. However, Bill has developed an annoying habit of pointing out things that seem to defy explanation. When he does this, the others invariably reply, "SHUT UP, BILL!"

Since the election of Justy Yung as Senior Patrol Leader, Bill has become a member of the Garden Snake Patrol.

Bill is based on a real person. First appearance, Boy Scouts ½, part 1.

Hawley, Mr. John (Cigar Smoking Man)

Mr. John Hawley is an adult leader in Troop 192. He also holds the rather lofty Council position of Camping Committee Chairman. As a troop elder, he uses his power and authority to control the youth of 192 for his own selfish benefit. The elders’ ultimate goal is as of yet unknown.

John Hawley takes orders from no one. Indeed, his colleagues on the shadowy board of adults seem to fear him. From his mouth so often accompanied by an expensive cigar have come words that have changed the whole history of Scouting. At his insistence, regulations have been rewritten, entire troops have been dissolved, and men have disappeared.

What is he capable of? What does he want and to what lengths will he go to get it? Only he knows the answers to these questions.

Mr. Hawley is named after and loosely, very loosely, based on a real person, although he has been exaggerated greatly and otherwise altered for comedic effect. First appearance: Boy Scouts ½, part 8.

Homer

A member of Troop 192 whose main distinguishing characteristic is, unfortunately, that he is somewhat annoying. Unfortunately, he is not the most annoying member of the troop.

No last name has been given for this character. First appearance: Boy Scouts ½, part 9.

https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/bs-hughes_5724.png

Hughes, William Thomas "Bill" (Neko-Chan)

A member of Boy Scout Troop 192. When on a trip to China, Bill visited the Training Ground of Cursed Springs, Jusenkyo, where he fell into Maoniichuan, or Spring of Drowned Cat. Because of this, when dowsed with cold water, Bill turns into a cat. Warm water reverses the effect.

Bill is fluent enough in French to have earned a French Interpreter's Strip. Oddly enough, he seems more interested in German and often at meetings will randomly say something in German that, while it does mean something, makes little sense in the current situation.

The others in the group call Bill a "Hick." Technically, Bill is not a hick, something he frequently reminds them of whenever they bring it up, but someone once made the suggestion that he is one, and inexplicably the misnomer stuck.

Since the election of Justy Yung as Senior Patrol Leader, Bill has become a member of the Garden Snake Patrol.

In his alternate form Bill has become the pet of Nicole Porter, who named her new cat Neko-chan. Nicole is, of course, oblivious to the fact that her pet is actually Bill Hughes.

Bill is based on a real person. First appearance: Boy Scouts ½, part 1.

  • Garden Snake Patrol: Butt-Monkey - The other members of the patrol often poke fun at him, particularly his sense of fashion. When he was fond of plaid flannel and they called him a hick, this was somewhat baseless. But when his fashion sense radically changes after the summer of 1998, their mockery may have merit.
  • One-Steve Limit: Shares his name with Bill Gelinas.

Martin, Mr. Robert

A member of Troop 192’s Troop Committee. While normally infamously loud and outspoken, during meetings with the other shadowy Troop Elders, he becomes soft spoken, and almost sounds like Marlon Brando’s character from the film, The Godfather.

Mr. Martin is based on a real person, exaggerated in some respects for humorous effect. First appearance: Boy Scouts ½, part 8.

McCarthy, Mr. Ted

Troop Committee Chairman of Troop 192. Despite seemingly being at the top of the shadowy Troop Elders, he may merely be a puppet of Mr. John Hawley.

First appearance: Boy Scouts ½, part 8.

McGraw, Mr. Jack

A bitter old man and an Assistant Scoutmaster of Troop 192. Husband of Joan McGraw and father of Slim McGraw. Together, the three of them make up one of the least liked families in the Troop by the Troop’s youth.

Jack McGraw is a member of the shadowy council of Troop Elders.

First appearance: Boy Scouts ½, part 1.

McGraw, Mrs. Joan

Wife of Jack. Mother of Slim. Assistant Scoutmaster of Troop 192. Somewhat boyish in appearance, could almost pass for a youth member of the Troop except for her wrinkles.

First appearance: Boy Scouts ½, part 1.

McGraw, Slim

A member of Troop 192. Seems to posses only one complete brain cell, and doesn’t even use that. One of the many members of the Troop whose main purpose in life seems to be to annoy others. His unique way to go about it is to cause distress to others to the point where they begin to cause problems, at which point Slim them lets the other person cause havoc while he plays Mr. Innocent.

One occasion when he did take an active roll in causing trouble was in the tormenting of young Kenneth Pendrell shortly after Kenny had joined the Troop. As a direct result of this, and the intervention of Mike, Aaron, Matt Atanian, and the Bills, Kenny became something of a protégé to Mike, Aaron, Matt and the Bills.

First appearance: Boy Scouts ½, part 9.

https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/bs-kenny_2200.jpg

Pendrell, Kenneth “Kenny”

Kenneth is a young boy, barely old enough to be a Boy Scout, who joins the troop. He shows up for his first meeting in a full, neat uniform with all of the appropriate insignia (including troop numerals) already in place. However, he has NO prior scouting experience. In the beginning, he doesn't know how to tie anything more complex then a square knot, he doesn't know first aid beyond the Band-Aid level, and he couldn't pitch a tent if his life depended on it. He will be a quick learner, however.

He appears somewhat frail, wears thick glasses, always carries a book with him, and it's usually something pretty hefty, like Moby Dick, War and Peace, or some Shakespeare. He is a quiet boy, and will sit alone in the corner with his book if left alone. Almost as soon as he joins the troop, some of the troop's ruder members such as Homer and Slim McGraw begin openly picking on him, and others, such as Justy Yung, take a quiet dislike to him.

The group of Aaron, Matt Atanian, Mike, and the Bills begin to take him in, at first to defend him against the ruder members of the Troop. Soon they discover, however, that beneath the shell he hides from the rest of the world in, he is a bright, open minded, warm and caring individual, and the group begins to treat him more like a protégé, as if he was their little brother. (The kind of little brother one actually likes having hang around, that is.) After he is taken in the group, he is nicknamed Kenny.

Deep in the Earth, beneath Kenny’s house, is an immense laboratory of the type commonly associated with “Mad Scientists.” Where this lab came from, and what Kenny does there, is anyone’s guess

First appearance: Boy Scouts ½, part 8.

https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/bs-perfume_9083.jpg

Perfume (Perry)

Perfume is a Chinese Amazon Warrior woman from the village of Joketsuzoku. Unfortunately, she is not a terribly good warrior. In fact, her great-grandmother Cologne commented that she was the worst warrior in two thousand years of Chinese Amazon history. Thus, it comes as no surprise that when she challenged Matty Hayes to battle over a small offence, she quickly accepted Matty’s alternative of Thumb Wrestling.

Unfortunately she lost, and her honor and the honor of the village demanded that she kill Matty Hayes. Matty, along with Mike, Aaron, and the Bills, fled and Perfume gave pursuit. Her pursuit took her through the Training Ground of Cursed Springs, Jusenkyo, where she was accidentally knocked into Nanniichuan, the Spring of Drowned Boy. Because of this, when dowsed with cold water, Perfume turns into a male version of herself. Warm water reverses the effect. She has adopted the name “Perry” when in her male form.

Her pursuit of Matty Hayes didn’t end when Matt Atanian returned to the United States. She eventually tracked her target down and, in her male form, joined Troop 192. Perry confronted Matty, and a dousing with hot water later Matt was shocked to discover that the new boy in the Troop is actually Perfume, and Perfume was shocked to discover that Matty was really a man. Despite this, she still wants to kill him. Her death list has expanded to include Mike, Aaron, and the Bills for the roll they had in unintentionally knocking her into the cursed spring. She has permanently moved to Massachusetts, having purchased a pizza shop that she renamed, “Perfume’s Pizza.”

Perry was assigned to the Garden Snake Patrol, causing something of a headache for Mike, Aaron, Matt, and the Bills. Fortunately for them, she constantly seems to foil her own plans for killing them. Indeed, she is the worst warrior in two thousand years of Chinese Amazon history!

First appearance: Boy Scouts ½, part 14.

Proctor, Hecubus

A young man who joined Troop 192 in the fall of 1997. He presumably transferred from another troop, as he already held the First Class rank.

He has an odd habit of addressing those he views as his superiors by military rank. To him, the ultimate superior is none other then Justy Yung. He fell in love with Justy’s command style immediately, and without further ado began the groveling and bootlicking necessary to stay close to his idol.

When Justy was elected Senior Patrol Leader, he immediately made Proctor his Assistant. Proctor follows Justy around like a puppy, doing whatever he can to please his master. Unfortunately, as Proctor is none too bright, his efforts are usually doomed to failure.

First appearance: Boy Scouts ½, part 8.

Pruyne, Mr. William

A former Scoutmaster of Troop 192. He was well liked by the youth in the Troop. He had been involved with the program for many years, and was even one of Matthew Atanian’s Cub Scout leaders.

Unfortunately, the only way he could have survived as a Scout Leader for such a long time was to be a member of the shadowy council of Troop Elders. He disliked his roll in the conspiracy and on multiple occasions, tried to win as many small battles as he could for the youth. However, in the fall of 1997, his fellow Troop Elders went too far when they disregarded the results of the Senior Patrol Leader election and appointed Justy Yung to the position.

He attempted to help Mike Quadrozzi and other youth in the Troop uncover the truth of the election. Unfortunately, the other Troop Elders were aware of his plans. His current whereabouts are unknown.

Mr. Pruyne is based on a real person. First appearance: Boy Scouts ½, part 1.

https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/bs-mike_8120.jpg

Quadrozzi, Michael D. "Squid"

A member of Boy Scout Troop 192, formerly the Assistant Senior Patrol Leader who had aspirations of being elected to the position of Senior Patrol Leader. When on a trip to China, Mike visited the Training Ground of Cursed Springs, Jusenkyo, where he fell into Song-shu-niichuan, Spring of Drowned Squirrel. Because of this, when dowsed with cold water, Mike turns into a squirrel. Warm water reverses the effect.

Mike obsessively wears a red "Troop 192" baseball cap. He is, for reasons unknown to even himself, nicknamed “Squid.” He enjoys British Comedy to an extent that rivals, and perhaps even exceeds, Matt Atanian's obsession with it. He seems to be one of the world's leading authorities on the television series, The X-Files.

In the fall of 1997, Mike ran for the position of Senior Patrol Leader, and somehow lost to Justy Yung. He has since become the Patrol Leader of the Garden Snake Patrol, whose other members include Aaron Abdowmassy, Billy Gelinas, Bill Hughes, Jon Becker, Matthew Swett, Kenny Pendrell, Will Shmuler, and Perry.

Mike is based on a real person. First appearance: Boy Scouts ½, part 1.

Shmuler, Mr. William

The new Scoutmaster of Troop 192 who took over the position after the mysterious disappearance of Bill Pruyne. Never wears a complete uniform. Seemingly easy going. He is probably just a puppet of the shadowy Troop Elders.

First appearance: Boy Scouts ½, part 10.

Shmuler, Will

The son of Troop 192’s new Scoutmaster. He is human cartoon character. Unfortunately, it is the kind of cartoon character that you’d like to shoot. Take the worst parts of Daffy Duck and Woody Woodpecker and mix them all together all while running the fingernails of every member of the London Symphony Orchestra over the world’s largest chalkboard, and you begin to approach the annoyance that is Will Shmuler.

Will was assigned to the Garden Snake Patrol by Justy Yung, much to the despair of the patrol’s other members. They initially only saw him as a disruptive nuisance, an attitude his actions did little to dissuade. However, after the occasion when Will was instrumental in the plan to retake Camp Moses from a Canadian terrorist takeover, his patrol mates began to warm up to him.

First appearance: Boy Scouts ½, part 10.

Swett, Matthew

One of the more sarcastic members of Troop 192, he is made a member of the Garden Snake patrol when it is formed by Justy Yung in part 10. Prior to this, the main characters in the patrol had previously viewed him as another younger annoying member of the troop, but thought he would be okay as he had more recently been channeling his strangeness from annoying to eccentric. In fact, they soon voted him Assistant Patrol Leader (in part because the more experienced members of the patrol either didn't want authority or, in the case of Mike, had become the Patrol Leader) and proved quite capable in the position.

Matt is based on a real person. First appearance: Boy Scouts ½, part 10.

  • Garden Snake Patrol: The Lancer - The Deadpan Snarker within a group that is not unfamiliar with the concept of sarcasm, Swett also serves as the Assistant Patrol Leader.
  • One-Steve Limit: Shares his name with both Matthew Abert and Matthew Atanian

https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/bs-justy_8418.jpg

Yung, Justy

A member of Boy Scout Troop 192. Justy is the same age as Mike, Aaron, and the Bills, and in fact he came up from Cub Scouts with them. Back in those early days, when the five of them had barely attained the Tenderfoot rank, Mike, Aaron, and the Bills began to notice a change in their fellow. The safety net of youth was gone, the weights thrown off. Justy turned from an innocent if quite ambitious lad into a cruel and obnoxious megalomaniac. He no longer cared about doing the right thing or helping other people unless it suited his purposes. Service to the community bored him. Justy shoveled through the Scout ranks, engulfing every piece of the power and authority he craved. Yet, he will never earn the respect of his peers.

Due to the plans of the shadowy Troop Elders, Justy Yung has recently attained the position of Senior Patrol Leader. Now, having been given the ultimate power he has long desired he rules over the scouts of 192 with an iron fist.

Does Justy have an ulterior motive? Is he only lashing out at others because he's pitifully insecure? Does he really just want to be loved? No one is sure, but it seems that he just likes yelling and ranting and being mean to people.

First appearance: Boy Scouts ½, part 5.

     Other Boy Scout Characters

Abert, Brian

The younger of Mr. Mark Abert's two sons, during the ill fated Camporee that was soon to be taken over by Canadian terrorists, it was Brian's sarcastic suggestion of camping in the middle of the lake that let to Troop 180 actually doing so. Later that weekend, he assisted Kenny in the construction of The French Castle.

Brian is based on a real person. First appearance: Boy Scouts ½, part 19.

Abert, Mr. Mark

A Boy Scout Leader in Troop 180, and the archery director at Summer Camp for a few years including 1997. Well liked for his personality, odd humor, and skill at the Magic: The Gathering card game.

Mark is based on a real person. First appearance: Boy Scouts ½, part 5.

Abert, Matthew

An Assistant Scoutmaster of Troop 180, son of Mark Abert, and friend of Matt Atanian and other members of Troop 192. Matt and Matt Atanian were roommates for the summer when they both worked on Summer Camp Staff in 1996. Along with his father, one of the two persons most responsible for getting Matt Atanian interested in the game Magic: The Gathering.

Matt is based on a real person. First Appearance, Boy Scouts ½, part 13.

  • One-Steve Limit: Shares his name with both Matthew Atanian and Matthew Swett. (Word of God says that once upon a time, the real Matt Abert suggested that at some point a story should feature a scene where the three Matthews are having a conversation, and the scene should be played without any use of surnames. This has yet to happen, and is unlikely to occur in the near future given the shift of setting to Japan and Matthew Atanian being the only Matthew to shift with it... but one never knows what the future may hold.)

https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/bs-dan_4765.gif

Wellington, Dan

A member of Boy Scout Troop 815. Dan lives so far out "in the sticks" that where he lives barely can qualify as "the twigs." He first became friends with Matt Atanian in 1995, when Matt was in his first of two consecutive years as the Summer Camp Trading Post Manager. The two became closer friends in 1996, when Dan was on staff, too.

Dan loves fire. He will literally burn anything he can, within reason. Dan wants to be a professional firefighter, and already volunteers with his local fire-fighting forces, so he has the skills to deal with anything he starts.

Dan is based on a real person, his pyromania exaggerated a bit for humorous effect. First appearance: Boy Scouts ½, part 2.

     Girl Scout Characters

Birkin, Sherry

A younger member of Girl Scout Troop 42 who, during the terrorist takeover of Camp Moses, warned the unknowing Garden Snake Patrol of the danger that had come to camp.

The following year, Sherry had matured somewhat and become the assistant to the new leader of Troop 42's youth, Vladimira Vasilieva. A loyal servant, Sherry was even willing to lay down her life for her mistress. Fortunately, her mistress found her too valuable a servant to sacrifice needlessly.

First appearance: Boy Scouts ½, part 20.

  • Shout-Out: Like many of the girls in Troop 42, her name's the same as a character from the Resident Evil videogame franchise. Usually this only applies to throw-away characters in Troop 42, and is an artifact of the fact that in her first appearance, Sherry was intended as little more than that herself.

https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/bs-kirstin_9765.jpg

Porter, Kirstin

A member of Girl Scout Troop 42, which meets at the Church in the Acres.

Even though she's the same age as Nicole and younger then Sarah, she seems to take on the roll of being the emotional keystone of her family, almost like she was a mother for her sisters. She seems to want to take care of their emotional well being, which would explain her desire to help Matt Atanian with her sister.

Kirstin develops less then platonic feelings for Aaron, but she is so used to concerning herself with her sisters' emotional wellbeing that she is unsure where to proceed where her own wellbeing is concerned. Thus, she and Aaron have a hard time getting anything much beyond friendship started, even though it seems to be something they both want.

Kirstin does find out about what happened in China, but agrees to keep the secret. Also, she encourages Matt and tries to help him out in his hopes to get closer to her older sister, hoping that the relationship, if it were to happen, would make her sister happy.

First appearance: Boy Scouts ½, part 6.

  • Expy: Kirstin is in some ways similar to Tendo Kasumi. Note that this refers not to Kasumi's seemingly oblivious nature to the insane things happening around her. Kirstin is an intelligent, sharp, and observant person. But like Kasumi, she has a big heart, and cares a lot for her family and friends. Also, with Sarah busy working a lot, Kirstin helps out around the house with some of the cooking and cleaning.
  • Promotion to Parent: In an emotional sense, for her sisters.

https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/bs-nicole_8718.jpg

Porter, Nicole

A member of Girl Scout Troop 42, which meets at the Church in the Acres.

Kirstin's identical twin sister, Nicole seems very interested in things of a monetary nature. She is constantly scheming up new ways to make money. She is not necessarily callous in these attempts, however. She may not mind seeing someone embarrassed by her enterprises, but she would never want to see someone hurt by them — especially someone close to her.

One day while shopping at the mall, Nicole met Jason Bertovich. This meeting was in the form of his coming to her aid when a man was about to attack her. However, in the end it was Nicole who had to rescue Jason, with the help of a swift foot into their attacker’s happy sack. Nicole has since been keeping touch with Jason, having developed a bit of an interest in him.

For more information, see also: Porter, Sarah. First appearance: Boy Scouts ½, part 6.

  • Expy: Of Tendo Nabiki
  • Money Fetish
  • Spin-Off: Although she remains a major supporting character in the main series, she is also a major character in the spin-off series, Perspectives.

https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/bs-sarah_7156.jpg

Porter, Sarah

A leader of Girl Scout Troop 42, which meets at the Church in the Acres.

She first met Matther Atanian up at the Moses Scout Reservation, and took an immediate dislike to him. This did not change when, shortly afterwards, her troop conviently moved to the same meeting place as Matt's Boy Scout troop. Sarah does not at all like Matt, even though Matt is quite taken with her. However, Sarah knows nothing about Matt's Jusenkyo curse, and she and Matty Hayes become quite good friends.

She is strong willed, and a first impression with her (especially when it's a bad one) tends to stick. She has a bit of a temper and gets angry a lot, not with her sisters but at just about anyone else who gives her reason to. This probably is in part due to the tremendous stress she suffers from having to support her two sisters.

Sarah is the legal guardian of her sisters. Their parents died when they were very young (just shortly after Kirstin and Nicole's birth). Until recently, the girls' maternal grandmother (who had been their only other living relative) was their guardian. With the grandmother's recent death, Sarah has been given custody of her sisters. While the Porters have trust funds started by their parents before their deaths, as well as some inheritances from their late grandmother, their access to these funds is limited and just covers the basic living expenses. Sarah wants her family to do well, however, and thus works to take care of herself and her sisters.

Their grandmother was Japanese, and one of the things she tried to bestow upon her granddaughters was an understanding of the Japanese language and culture. Sarah knows the language with some degree of skill but not perfectly. Kirstin has a rudimentary understanding at best, and Nicole has only a basic understanding.

First appearance: Boy Scouts ½, part 4.

  • Expy: Of Akane Tendo.
  • Promotion to Parent: Sarah is her sister's legal guardian, takes care of them financially, and does her best to see to their needs. Paradoxically, when it comes to emotional needs, this roll is often shared with or superseded by her younger sister, Kirstin.
  • Tsundere: Very much one, especially towards Matthew Atanian.

Vasilieva, Vladimira

A new member of Girl Scout Troop 42, who joined shortly after the Porters' departure for Japan and quickly became the leader of her troop. Although perhaps "monarch" would be a better word. Fancying herself a descendant of Russian nobility (a notion that may or may not actually have merit) it is her greatest desire to achieve her divine right to rule the world.

First appearance: Boy Scouts ½ in Japan, part 10.

  • Alliterative Name
  • Distaff Counterpart: Leader of the youth members of a scout unit who has a loyal sidekick and who seeks to rule over the entire world. Although her attitudes and methods may differ from his, it is not too hard to see a lot of similarities between her and her rival Justy Yung.
  • Royal "We": One does not use the Royal "We" oneself, but one does have one's own unique pronoun usage to set oneself apart from and above the common folk.

Bertovich, Jason

Jason is an employee at the Electronics Boutique at Holyoke Mall. He is also something of an Otaku.

Jason is good friends with two employees of the Filenes Department Store: John Hoelscher and Fenny Lin. They have regular meetings in the mall’s food court, the purpose of which seems to be to keep each other sane through the drudgery of mall-employeedom.

One day at work, Jason met Nicole Porter and has since become romantically interested in her. Luckily for him, she seems at least somewhat interested in him, as well.

Jason is based on a real person. First appearance: Boy Scouts ½, part 11.

Hoelscher, John

John is an employee in the shoe department of Filenes Department Store at Holyoke Mall. He is also something of an Otaku.John is good friends with two other mall employees: Jason Bertovich and Fenny Lin. They have regular meetings in the mall’s food court, the purpose of which seems to be to keep each other sane through the drudgery of mall-employeedom.

John seems to have hidden deep within him three distinct personalities vying for control over his natural personality. Their visual manifestations within his subconscious all resemble him, but they also bear a resemblance to (and have the personalities of) three anime characters: Ikari Shinji from Neon Genesis Evangelion, Jinnai Katsuhiko from El-Hazard: The Magnificent World, and Kiryou Touga from Revolutionary Girl Utena.

John is based on a real person. First appearance: Boy Scouts ½, part 11.

  • Divine Date: John eventually enters into a romantic relationship with Lina Wells.

Lin, Fenny (The Goddess Fenira [original version] / The Goddess Feng Ni La [reboot])

Fenny Lin at first glance seems to be just a simple employee at Filenes Department Store at the Holyoke Mall. Actually, this is not true. Even at first glance, it is quite clear that she is something quite special.

A combination of extreme beauty, outstanding intelligence, and amazing insight, one would almost think Fenny was a Goddess. As fate would have it, they would be right.

Sister of the Goddesses Jordiko and Sonyarina (renamed Jordan and Sonjagaard in the reboot), the Goddess Fenira (renamed Feng Ni La in the reboot) left her position in whatever cosmic agency she works for and assumed the life of a simple mall employee, taking the name Fenny Lin. In her work, she has become friends with fellow mall employees Jason Bertovich and John Hoelscher. She spends much of her time trying to ease the souls of the people around her, especially in matters of romance. Unfortunately for her, her fellow divine beings frown upon that kind of thing, seeing her actions as little more then meddling in the affairs of mortals.

Fenny is based on a real person, who many would argue is in fact a Goddess. First appearance: Boy Scouts ½, part 11.

Wells, Lina (The Goddess Linoleum)

A Special Agent for the Divine Agency tasked with hunting down the missing Fenira, Jordiko, and Sonyarina. Although she is mostly portrayed sympathetically, she is seeking to return Fenny and her sisters to the Devine Agency — even though she knows that that could result in their deaths.

First appearance: Perspectives VI.

  • Fallen Angel: Her branch of the Divine Agency doesn't take failure lightly.

     Other Characters

Kataki Megumi (かたき めぐみ)

Class president of the class that Matthew Atanian instructs in English during is year in Japan. Fluent in English herself, during Matt's lessons she acts more as a TA then as a student. Megumi (who typically goes by the name Meg) grew up in America and only recently moved to Japan due to her father's job.

She seems quite taken with her new teacher.

First appearance: Boy Scouts ½ in Japan, part 3

  • Bilingual Bonus / Meaningful Name: Meg's family name, Kataki, can mean "rival" or "foe," setting up the role she will likely play towards Sarah.
  • Early-Bird Cameo: Parts 3, 4, and 5 of Boy Scouts ½ in Japan take place concurrently and have some overlap. While Meg is not properly introduced until part 5, the previous two parts do have other characters spotting Matt in the company of an unfamiliar woman.
  • Love Triangle: A Japanese school girl who herself is an otaku, who is actively interested in Matt, and who knows about and is okay with his curse? It almost seems like she was tailor made to be Matt's perfect love interest! Of course, Matt is already in love with Sarah. Surely, no conflict shall come from this...
  • Shout-Out: The name Megumi is shared with Hayashibara Megumi, the best known seiyuu from Ranma ½ (and who had her debut as a minor character in Maison Ikkoku).

Kelly, Officer Stan

A Massachusetts State Police Officer who investigated the assault against Jason Bertovich, and later successfully arrested the culprits. He also seemed to be known by Nicole Porter, who called him in for assistance in cleaning up the mess in the aftermath of the successful liberation of Camp Moses from takeover by Canadian terrorists.

Kelly takes pride in his appearance. He is quite friendly and personable with the people he serves and protects, but quite serious when faced with an offender. He has a strange disdain for those who work in mall security.

First appearance: Perspectives IV.
