Five-Man Band has been receiving a lot of misuse. As was concluded in this TRS thread, it needs a massive cleanup. There are over 30 subpages and almost 3500 wicks to be gone through. This thread is for organizing the cleanup effort and discussing any and all examples to be added and cut.
What is correct use of the trope?
- The characters must be part of a team, that is, a team dynamic must exist between members of the band.
- There must be exactly 5 team members
Format for examples
In an effort to cut down on misuse as well as get rid of all the Zero Context Examples, we are trying to shift all examples to the following format. If you are familiar with a current work and can do a writeup for it, please do so and post it here.
The sandbox for sorting examples is here.
Completed
Subpages:
- Other (Moved and redirected to a Just for Fun page, as that is what is was acting as.)
Still needs work
Wicks (Related To page):
- B-V
I will keep this post updated with the progress made, and any other needed information.

The one on the Raider of the Lost Ark page has already been taken care of.
"I'll show you the Dark Side." CM actors and killsTaken off the Indiana Jones and Star Trek examples on the Five Bad Band page.
"I'll show you the Dark Side." CM actors and killsA minor one I haven't added to The Walking Dead : Michonne Tell Tale miniseries yet but wanted to run through here first.
Big Bad: Norma The leader and founder of the Monroe settlement. She leads the group on an antagonistic hunt for Sam and Michonne.
The Dragon: Randall. Norma's brother and chief enforcer who comes at odds with Michonne the most and has a nasty sadistic streak.
Evil Genius: Jonas. The doctor of the settlement. (He's not really evil though. He does come back in Episode 3 as an antagonist depending on if the player decides to let Sam kill Zachary.
The Brute: Gabby. One of Norma's more frequently seen soldiers. She executes Berto in a moment of revenge driven rage in Episode 3 if the player decides to let Zachary live. If not, Jonas will do it.
The Dark Chick: Zachary. He's a Pretty Freeloader who is implied to only be a part of the settlement because he's in a relationship with Jonas. He's a twitchy and nervous Token Good Teammate who is pressured by Randall into interrogating Michonne, Sam and Greg. He ends up accidentally shooting and killing Greg after Randall's pressure and agressive goading goes too far. He also tries to get Randall to lay off his violent methods in the interrogation of Michonne and Greg with Norma but he's too Ax-Crazy to listen.

here's a question since this has come up a couple of times.
since the redefinition of Dark Chick (Evil / feminine) to be a better standalone trope, there are plenty of ensembles that have the old dark chick (something more like Oddball Villain) .
Should we TLP an Oddball Villain trope? and then should that Oddball Villain trope take the place of Dark Chick in FBB?
I think there should be a Spear Counterpart to the Dark Chick trope. The defintion is easy the hard thing is the name. I don't think Dark Chick should be replaced but I think there should be a masculine alternative if the fifth member happens to be male.
edited 4th Jul '16 11:57:22 AM by Imoo57
a lot of the spear counterparts were been changed from Dark Chick to either the Wacky Guy or Bunny-Ears Lawyer during the cleanup.
It should be encompassing. Bunny-Ears Lawyer isn't a role defining trope so much as it is a characterizing one. A Dark Chick could also happen to be one. Wacky Guy is a little better.
The Oddball or The Odd One Out sounds reasonable. Because it was even refrenced in the original Five Bad Band page if it hasn't been edited yet.

I think that creating Oddball Villain would just encourage even more shoehorning than we already have, honestly.
(Also, the example proposed up on the page sounds like a non-example - mainly, again, because The Evil Genius doesn't really work. People need to read its definition more often.)

https://tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pmwiki.php/FiveManBand/VideoGamesOToS so should the paper mario group be delete?

yes, but the page is locked. need a mod.
Speaking of Spear Counterpart to Dark Chick. I realized something most male D Cs have in common. They're all eccentric in some way and stand out. That or they're more noble and/or sensitive if evryone else is darker in morality. Though the main entry for Five Bad Band seems to have taken care of it.
"Some lineups forego this role, or just combine it with, Bunny-Ears Lawyer and the Wacky Guy."
edited 8th Jul '16 8:22:20 AM by Imoo57
That line should be deleted since it's probably contributing to the misuse.
If a tree falls in the forest and nobody remembers it, who else will you have ice cream with?hence why i brought up potentially TL Ping Oddball Villain

You've got roaming bands of armed, aggressive, tyrannical plumbers coming to your door, saying "Use our service, or else!"A lot of these are left over from pre-The Team era, when all roles got shoehorned (Tagalong Kid, The Mentor, etc etc) into FMB and people would list teams with clearly more than 5 or 5+sixth ranger.
I will say that the site has a certain fondness for keeping the Star Wars example, which pretty much counts if you see 3P0 and R2 as The Dividual (they are always introduced as counterparts), and exclude Obi-Wan since The Mentor isn't part of the lineup.
Star Wars provides the trope image for all but the Sixth Ranger.
The subpages are locked so you'd have to call a mod however.

Alright, I'll submit a request to delete the blatant misuse and correct the Star Wars example.
You've got roaming bands of armed, aggressive, tyrannical plumbers coming to your door, saying "Use our service, or else!"Those are all horrible examples but I dont see the harm in a Sixth Ranger. Seems erroneous not to add one just because of the name espescially if there's just one additional team member.
edited 10th Jul '16 3:19:10 PM by Imoo57
i think most people agree that 5+sixth ranger is okay.
six or more from the beginning is not.
less than five is also not okay unless their additional rangers bump them up to five and they fit the roles. (like in a Three Plus Two situation)
I must be one of the few that don't like the 5+1. As soon as there are six members, it is no longer a Five Man Band. There's no problem with stating the original five as long as there is no attempt to make the sixth ranger appear part of a five person trope.
Isn't the Sixth Ranger still allowed to be listed under certain circumstances?
If a tree falls in the forest and nobody remembers it, who else will you have ice cream with?Would this work as a Five-Man Band?
- The Penguins of Madagascar
- The Leader: Skipper, The Captain of the titular penguins.
- The Lancer: Private, while the lowest ranked penguin, serves as a Foil to Skipper due to being younger, more idealistic, and the most sane of the Penguins.
- The Smart Guy: Kowalski, the brain of the team.
- The Big Guy: Rico, the sturdiest, stupidest, and most Ax-Crazy of the team, who also serves as a walking Hammerspace.
- The Chick: Marlene, who is not a penguin, but is the only female in the main cast, who sometimes joins up with the Penguins as a fifth member and an example of Women Are Wiser.

"I'll show you the Dark Side." CM actors and killsWell, you're not wrong. Once the Sixth Ranger joins, they're no longer a Five-Man Band. But the value of pointing out 5+1 is that it provides context to when the team stops being a five man band and becomes The Team.
Found a Youtube Channel with political stances you want to share? Hop on over to this page and add them.x2 No. Marlene is not part of the Penguins' team dynamic, just an occasional tag-along or bystander to their antics.

If a tree falls in the forest and nobody remembers it, who else will you have ice cream with?Fair enough.
"I'll show you the Dark Side." CM actors and kills
Then delete it.
Trying to argue about the definition of what constitutes a Five Bad Band (which I think you're doing?) by bringing up bad examples isn't productive when these ensemble tropes have issues with chronic misuse.
