A Camera Trick where the camera is placed directly over the actor, pointing down, while the actor looks up into the camera and screams. The camera pulls away, while SPIIIIIIIINNNNNNNNNNNNING!
See also Big No, The Scream, Say My Name. When using more than one word, also enters This Is SPARTA.
Examples:
- John Belushi's character screaming after the beer bar is taken away in Animal House.
- Attributed to Star Trek II: The Wrath of Khan, where William Shatner screams "KHAAAAAAAAANNNNN!!!!!!" This example is a little different from the "classic" version, however; the camera is next to Shatner's face, and pointed toward him, not above him. Since Kirk is only pretending to have been stranded, it's debatable whether it's Kirk, Shatner or both overacting.
- Seinfeld parodied this three times. The first time was George yelling "KHAAAAAAN!" after realizing his life must be dedicated to the Susan Ross foundation, the idea for which came to Susan's parents from Jerry's quote from Star Trek 2: The Wrath Of Khan. The second time was Elaine yelling "SUUUUUUUUUUZE!" after realizing her life must be dedicated to the Susie foundation, a fake character she initially made up to avoid troubles and later "killed" her to avoid exposure. The third time was George screaming "TWIIIIIIIIIX!!" after people ate up his candy lineup, which he set up to catch his candy's thief in a car dealership.
- The Critic and Family Guy both parodied this by showing William Shatner screaming "KHAAAAAAANNNN!!!!!" in a random context. (In the former, Shatner is hosting a "Celebrity 911" show about James Caan. In the latter, he simply shouts it
for no reason to replace the word "can" while playing the lead in Fiddler On the Roof.)
- Jon Stewart does this a lot on The Daily Show, and was especially gratified when the scientist found to be supplying rogue regimes with nuclear technology was actually named A.Q. Khan
. They once even subverted/failed to do the shot .
- Pick any parody of a 4Kids-supplied Macekre. It helps that their CEO is named Alfred Kahn.
- "Snake? Snake?! SNAAAAAAAKEEEEE!!!!
- Iconic movie example: In the film adaptation of A Streetcar Named Desire, just after realizing the error of his ways, Stanley Kowalski (Marlon Brando) screams out in the rain. The "STELLA!" is done with this camera angle and has become one of the most famous one-word lines in movie history.
- In the season 3 finale of Jackie Chan Adventures, the last scene show the demon Shendu, petrified again, yelling "CHAAAAAAAANNNN!!!!!" as the "camera" pans out.
- Pirates Of The Caribbean does this in the second movie, Dead Man's Chest: "Damn you, Jack...SSSPARRROOOWWWWW!!!!" complete with the pullaway camera angle from above (and Davy Jones spraying seawater).
- Duncan does this once in the Highlander series, when he screams Darius's name after finding his dead body.
- Performed by Cindy (Anna Faris' character) at the end of every one of the Scary Movie series, although usually punctuated by her being run over.
- Leela does one of these in the Futurama episode "Love's Labors Lost in Space" after waking up from a night of pity sex with The Ace Zapp Brannigan, who is himself a parody of William Shatner.
- Bartleby does this near the end of Dogma while laughing maniacally.
- In the comic "Liberty Meadows", Julius is often seen shouting "KAHHHNNN!" in conjunction with a failed fishing trip. The "Kahn" referred to is the biggest, meanest catfish around...
- In the videogame The Journeyman Project 3 (a game about time-traveling), you can encounter Genghis Khan himself and speak to him. You can also try to approach him via a vent beneath his tent. If you do, he'll turn around and knock you back down the hole. At which point, your robot companion/comedy relief sidekick Arthur takes the opportunity to scream, "KHAAAAAAN!!"
- Like Jon Stewart, Stephen Colbert of The Colbert Report also has engaged in this trope occasionally. ("MANILOWWWWWW!!!")
- Also "RAAAAAAAAAIIIIIIIIIINNNNN!!!"
- "BENNEEEEEEEETT!!!"
- "RICKLLLLLLLLLES!!!"
- Along those same lines, who can forget Conan O'Brien's tortured scream... "BOOOLLTEEEENN!"
- "STAMOS!"
- "LOLCAAATS!
"
- In Baz Luhrmann's Romeo and Juliet, the line "I am...FORTUNE'S FOOOOOOOOOOOOOOL!" gets this treatment.
- Doctor Who: "MAAAAARTHAAAAAA!" ("Gridlock") and "DOCTOOOOOOOOOOOOOOR!" ("Utopia"). And better yet, note that these two episodes were both in Series 3.
- It is a terrible pity that nobody ever invoked this trope at Dalek Caan.
- "TEAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAA!"
- Parodied in The Simpsons with Rainier Wolfcastle's "MEN-DO-ZAAAA!"
- Wade in the pilot episode of Sliders: NOOOOOOOOOOOOOO!
- The web comic Dungeon Crawl Inc uses this well-known line of William Shatner here
- Megatron in Transformers Animated delivers one when he find out that Starscream is the one responsible for his near death.
- Perhaps the most satisfying moment of Apollo Justice: Ace Attorney is when, at the end of the last case, you finally wring one of these out of the Magnificent Bastard Kristoph Gavin.
- Webcomic example: In After Y 2 K, when Bill Gates discovers
that Steve Ballmer has replaced him with a blow-up doll.
- "I GAVE MY WHOLE LIFE TO PORN! AND HE DOES IT IN ONE DAY! ONE!! DAY!!!"
- Memetic Mutation has people on 4chan frequently reacting this way to some piece of fanart that really pisses off or disgusts them (DEVIAAAAANNNTARRRRRRRT!)
- "BEEEEEOOOOOOOWUUUUULLLLLLLF!" An odd example of someone shouting their own name in this type of scene, but then, pride is the curse.
- "WILLIAAAAAMMM!" William Thatcher also does this, screaming his own name, at the end of A Knight's Tale.
- Valentine: NOOOOOOOOOO! I DON'T WANT TO BE A WAITER!
- "Where's my cottage? TROGDOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOR!"
- "NEXT EPISODE, BLUE LASER! NEXT EPISOOOOOOOOODE!!!!!!!"
- The Nostalgia Critic has invoked several Khan moments, whenever something is linked with his rival The Angry Video Game Nerd. When he deciphered a hidden message from the AVGN which reads "Lick my shit, Nostalgia Critic" or when he thought the main actor of The Wizard is the Nerd when he's little, he goes... "NEEEEEEEEEEERRRRDDDDD!!!!!!"
- JJJ pulls one in the second Spider Man movie
- Parodied in the movie Charlies Angels with Matt Leblanc howling "DAMN YOU, SALAZAAAR!" at the soaring camera while Lucy Liu lies dead in his arms. And then we find out they're shooting a movie within the movie.
- Ferris Buellers Day Off combines it with Distant Reaction Shot.
- Gundam 0083 has Kou Uraki's immortal "GATOOOOOOOO!!!!!!!!!!"
- In the Goof Troop episode "Nightmare on Goof Street", right before the second commercial break, Goofy and Pete are looking over a cliff where some con artists who have stolen most of Pete's house used to hide out. Pete screams that "there isn't any business here, 'cause I got conned by a couple o' CONNNNNNNNNNSSSSSSSSSSSS!!!!!!!!!!!!" (echo).
- Played straight in Mortal Kombat vs. DC Universe by the Joker at the moment that Captain Marvel reveals the name of the Original Generation Big Bad to the DC villains and Superman: Dark Kahn.
