"In this day and age, it may be hard to imagine what a perfect society would be. A society in which no crimes are ever committed. A society which the sun always shines and the people constantly have a smile upon their face. A society in which everybody is... happy.

Candyland, a kingdom made of delicious desserts, was once a perfect society, just like that. The wonderful, glorious Princess Praline, ruler of the candy kingdom, had made sure that her loyal subjects were as content as can be. For years, she had succeeded at a total candy utopia. The candy people had never known disaster.

That is, up until the eventful day that Princess Praline was supposedly kidnapped and had disappeared. After her mysterious disappearance, the entire kingdom—now without their faithful ruler—had fallen into utter disarray, and the candy people had snapped, many of them becoming broken and twisted due to not knowing how to cope with the stress of their newfound situation.

The one who had snatched Princess Praline didn't stop there, however. As if the disappearance of the princess wasn't enough, this person had decided to kidnap a number of students from the esteemed Hope's Peak Academy, and had trapped the students in a killing game within this chaotic candy kingdom.

Can this talented class defeat the mastermind behind this killing game, and possibly even help the people of Candyland reunite with their princess at last and restore the peace within the kingdom?"

— Premise of the roleplay.

Tasty Treats Despair is a Discord based roleplay inspired by the Danganronpa series run by users ericaisgay69 (Erica), Radiant Despair (Rin), and Verdant. The premise involves students who wake up in a candyland and try to find the missing princess while surviving a mutual game of killing. Each student has a talent that they specialize in, and need to solve the murders of their fellow Ultimates. It was originally slated to start in December 2019, but after some delays due to Weeping Willows Spirithand and the Coronavirus Pandemic hitting in early March of 2020, the roleplay started in late March.

The roleplay is currently on chapter 3 and can be found here.

23 students have to play Cluedo while getting stuck in Candyland.

Or: Danganronpa meets Sugar Rush from Wreck-It Ralph. Minus the racing.

Characters

Tasty Treats Despair is a roleplay with very memorable characters who occasionally have zany moments.

     Mascots

The three mascots that are running this killing game.

Tropes that apply to all of them.

  • Anthropomorphic Food: All of them are pieces of food.
  • Theme Naming: All of their names start with a G and happen to have names that are sweets or related to candy.

Ginger

The head mascot who is made of Gingerbread.
  • Anthropomorphic Food: A living and talking gingerbread person.
  • Jerkass: Announces that the students are here to kill each other and laughs when they freak out.
  • Killer Rabbit: Looks like a cute Gingerbread person, but he can kick your ass.
  • Pint-Sized Powerhouse: Despite being one foot tall, he was able to send the 5'9 Kagami flying across the room after he smacked her.
  • Would Hurt a Child: Doesn't see anything wrong with Meiko and Shane being in the killing game. Zig zagged given that they are teenagers, but still.

Goober

One of the mascots who is a gummy bear.

  • Anthropomorphic Food: A living and talking gummy bear. Except giant.
  • Battle Butler: Mentions that he serves Princess Praline, and he has a sword... He can also defend himself when necessary.
  • Reasonable Authority Figure: Played with. Sure he's sided with the students, but he can't do much to fight Ginger, and keeps disappearing.
  • Shaped Like Itself: He is a gummy bear made out of gummy... Except he is 5'8.
  • Stealth Hi/Bye: Frequently disappears without a word. No one is sure how he does it.

Gumball

One of the mascots who is a gummy snake.

     Surviving Students

"49"

Played by: Cube

The Ultimate Illusionist and a rather eccentric man. He can perform various impossible illusions and magic tricks, even in the face of physics and reality. He can be easily frightened as well, but he does care for others. He is 19 years old.

https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/49_4.png
  • All-Loving Hero: He cares for the other students and tries to make sure that everyone is okay.
  • Artistic License – Physics: He can do things that really should not be possible, like
    • Not noticing the ground disappearing beneath him and then he falls down when he does.
    • Manages to soar back up to the foyer after the end of chapter 2.
    • Lays his head on the water without falling in.
  • Cloud Cuckoo Lander: Mentions that his head is a head. It Makes Sense in Context.
  • Creepy Shadowed Undereyes: Has these in his profile image, making him seem a bit off-putting.
  • Failed a Spot Check: Somehow failed to notice the ground disappear and then fell down when he did.
  • Gravity Is Only a Theory: Manages to fly out of the second trial room once the second trial ended. A reverse of the below trope.
  • Horrifying the Horror: Well, played with but he managed to terrify Ida with his magic tricks.
  • It's All My Fault:
    • When he discovers the truth behind the first murder, he blames himself for not keeping a watch on the kitchen, and from preventing Anda from eating the poisoned chocolates.
    • He was in the market when Shinzo found Natsuki, but he ran away in terror hearing a scream, and blamed himself for it.
  • Maybe Magic, Maybe Mundane: He managed to float when the floor gave out underneath him, before falling. Then he flies back up. This is not explained.
    • Also manages to float on top of lemonade.
  • Nice Guy: He's a pretty nice guy who tries to befriend everyone.
  • Only Known by Their Nickname: He goes by the name of 49.
  • Scary Teeth: Has very sharp teeth.
  • Stage Magician: Well, more street magician, but he acts like a stage magician and his talent is Ultimate Illusionist. That being said, he can defy the normal laws... See his example on Maybe Magic, Maybe Mundane.

Buckley Abraham

Played by: Vick
The Ultimate Bull Rider, and a very friendly man. Not many people know him, but he gets along well with the other students and doesn't want any harm to come to them. He agreed to be a guard, and tends to listen to what Shane says. He is 17 years old.
https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/buckley_7.png

  • Cowboy: Of the Rodeo Rider variety. His talent involves riding bulls, and he works on a farm as well.
  • Curtains Match the Window: Has black hair and black eyes.
  • Gentle Giant: Despite being 6'1 and towering over most of the cast, he's actually really polite and gentle.
  • In Touch with His Feminine Side: Wears a shirt that has flowers on it, but is pretty masculine otherwise.
  • Joke Weapon: Borrows Kagami's water gun prosthetic arm to shoot Shawn. It Makes Sense in Context.
  • Mysterious Past: Not much is known about him, given that his profile doesn't give many details about him.
  • Nice Guy: He's pretty lax and friendly with everyone, and many have noted how nice he is.
  • Obscure Popularity: In-Universe example. Only certain circles know about his fame, while he is unknown to the rest of the world. His profile in the Candypad lampshades this.
  • Serious Business: Despite being pretty laid back, he took the Family Feud game very seriously - even though there wasn't a reward.

Dearil Cohen

Played by: Lilly
The Ultimate Anthropologist and a very curious man at heart. He may not take several things seriously, and doesn't think twice about eating the scenery. However, when the time is necessary, he immediately gets serious, and doesn't want to see the others in Candyland to get hurt. He is 19 years old.
https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/dearil.png

"Dice"

Played by: Verdant
A reserve course student and the only student so far who can't remember anything about her past. She has amnesia, and is the only student who has it - she can't even remember her name, and only remembers the word "dice", hence her nickname. Quiet and reserve, she tends to keep to herself. She is 19 years old.
https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/dice_0.png

.EXE

Played by: Froggy
The Ultimate Street Artist, and a rather mysterious person as a whole. He shows up in chapter 2, having taken up residence in the slums of Candyland (and scaring some of the others). He hisses a lot as he speaks, and no one really trusts him. He is 18 years old.
https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/exe_character.png
"....ah. But I am not the world. Ssso I will be..... hm.... kind."
  • An Odd Place to Sleep: He napped in a tree.
  • The Big Guy: He's one of the tallest characters here, standing as tall as Buckley (6'10). Only Ida is taller than him.
  • Dark Is Evil: Wears lots of dark clothing, and while he is not a villain (besides pranking/attacking the four students who found him), he is clearly not meant to be trusted.
  • Evil Sounds Deep: They're not really confirmed to be evil, but they aren't confirmed to be good either...
  • The Faceless: We never see what his face looks like.
  • The Friend Nobody Likes: Kagami, Shawn, and Shane despise him while Niklas is scared of him. The others are kind of neutral of him or distrust him at least.
  • In the Hood: Wears a hood to obscure their appearance.
  • Jerkass: He isn't very nice, given that he attacked three guys (Shawn, Shane, and Niklas), and stole Kagami's glasses when the four were investigating a house that he was in.

  • Only Known by Their Nickname: He goes by the name of .EXE.
  • Opaque Lenses: Has lenses that no one can see through, but he can see fine out of them. And it seems they glow too.
  • Sinister Shades: Has a pair of these that seem intimidating, even though they're cracked.
  • Sixth Ranger: Joins in chapter 2 after Kagami, Niklas, Shane, and Shawn found him.
  • Verbal Tic: Putsss an emphasissss on the letter s whenever he speaksssss, making it sound like a hissssss.

Hina Matsuri

Played by: Cosmic
The Ultimate Dollmaker. She is 18 years old.
https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/hina.png
  • Cloud Cuckoo Lander: Doesn't bat an eye at flooding the basement, and seems more focused on her dolls.
  • The Comically Serious: While being silent and serious, a lot of her appearances are rather hilarious. Especially the cellar thread where she flooded the cellar with tea.
  • Punny Name: Her name is Hina Matsuri and she is the Ultimate Dollmaker. Hinamatsuri, also called Doll's Day or Girls' Day, is a special day in Japan.
  • The Silent Bob: She expresses a lot of emotions, but she doesn't actually speak.
  • Silent Partner: The Silent partner to Myojin's Translator Buddy. Hina doesn't speak, but Myojin often translates for her.

She appears in Chapter 3, emerging from the Grasslands and coming across a group of students. She is 19 years old.

https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/ida_hedstrom_8.png
"IT'S NOT A CR U SH"
  • Amazonian Beauty: She stands at 6'8, and is incredibly muscular. Her roleplayer confirmed that she is an Amazonian beauty.
  • Ambiguously Absent Parent: Not much is mentioned about her father, but he wasn't in her backstory when she talked about it.
  • Badass Longcoat: Has a coat that reaches past her hips, but given her height, it counts as a longcoat.
  • Berserk Button: Hurting her sister Gun.
  • The Big Guy: With her reveal in chapter 3, she usurps the position of the tallest character from Buckley.
  • Big Sister Instinct: She has a younger sister named Gun. Her ex boyfriend found this out the hard way when he began to bully her.
  • Butch Lesbian: Is a lesbian and doesn't really wear feminine clothing.
  • Cannot Spit It Out: Develops interest in Rie Nana, but won't outright confess it. That won't stop her from spoiling the other...
  • Commonality Connection: With Shane. Both have gone long periods without eating and bond over this when making burgers.
  • Dark and Troubled Past: Hinted at in dialogue with Kagami and Shane, as with the former she resents her parents for her hard life, and then she mentioned not eating.
  • Deadpan Snarker: A good chunk of Ida's dialogue is actually sarcastic and she frequently snarks at the others. Except to Nana, of course.
  • Delinquents: Implied to be one.
  • Delinquent Hair: Shaved part of her hair, but let some of it grow out long. And she dyes it too.
  • Disproportionate Retribution: Taemon asks her several times why she's cagey and gets all gleeful about it. Ida's response? Shove him, keep his face down, and threaten to drown him.
  • Freak Out: When she finds out about the mascots, Ida freaks out and asks if this is a dream. She is told that it is not, much to her displeasure.
  • Freudian Slip: Confuses Kagami for Nana, since the latter was on her mind when she ran into Kagami. A bit justified given the similar hair colors.
  • Go-Getter Girl: Plays hockey and doesn't focus on being a homemaker.
  • Good Is Not Soft: Ida is on the side of the students, but she is definitely rough and doesn't hold back her thoughts.
  • Hates Their Parent: She hates her mother, and has stated this many times in the roleplay. Word of God confirms that she hates her father too.
  • Hidden Depths: There's more to her than meets the eye. While she seems nice, she does seem to enjoy causing pain...
  • Knight Templar Big Sister: If you hurt Gunn, she can and will make your life hell.
  • Lesbian Jock: She's the Ultimate Hockey Player, and immediately starts hitting on Rie Nana.
  • Mysterious Past: Not much is known about her past, given how dodgy she is about questions towards herself.
  • Parental Abandonment: She ended up getting raised by her aunt when her mother abandoned her.
  • Passionate Sports Girl: She loves playing hockey.
  • Pay Evil unto Evil: She beat up her ex for bullying her sister.
  • Sexy Scandinavian: Hails from Iceland, is blonde, has blue eyes, has a thick accent, and Rie Nana immediately became smitten with her. Downplayed because she dyes her hair.
  • Sports Hero Backstory: Well, she is the Ultimate Hockey Player. Although we don't know much about it.
  • Statuesque Stunner: She's a tall Amazon who is 6'8.
  • Stepford Snarker: Frequently snarks a lot, trying her best to hide her true feelings, but they show at times.
  • Tomboy and Girly Girl: The tomboy to Nana's girly girl, as she wears darker colors.
  • Tomboy with a Girly Streak: Wears some makeup and a skirt, but is otherwise a tomboy.
  • Unkempt Beauty: Barring the bear minimum eyeliner she wears, she is absolutely stunning.
  • Wolf in Sheep's Clothing: She can be nice, but once she snaps she goes on a warpath and views you as the lowest of low.
  • Wrong-Name Outburst: Nearly calls Kagami "Nana" once. Though thankfully she caught herself, and Kagami either didn't notice, or didn't bring it up.

Iwao Myojin

Played by: Ica

The Ultimate Scuba Diver. He is 18 years old.

https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/myojin.png

  • The Comically Serious: Despite having a serious demeanor, he can say things that are rather funny.
  • Put on a Bus: Disappears from the story briefly around chapter 2.
  • The Stoic: Doesn't really show emotions, and seems focused on the ocean more than anything.

  • Those Two Guys: Frequently seen around Candyland with Hina.
  • Translator Buddy: The Translator Buddy to Hina's Silent Partner. He tends to translate some of her phrases.

Kagami Kitai

Played by: Rin

The Ultimate Gamemaster, hailing from America. She's a rather friendly girl, and easily excitable about gaming, which is her passion. However, she has a rather violent side, and doesn't think twice about entering fights. With multiple prosthetic arms, she can handle several situations. In chapter 3, she reveals that she is actually the Ultimate Vigilante referred to as Mania, who would frequently target the Yakuza. She is 18 years old.

As of chapter 2's investigation, she is dating Taemon Takahashi.

https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/kagami_1.png
  • Action Girl: Despite being kidnapped and trapped in Spirithand, Kagami is more than able to fight. She doesn't flinch much during the search for .EXE.
  • Alliterative Name: Kagami Kitai.
  • Anatomy Arsenal: Can switch her prosthetic arm out for ones with weapons.
  • Anti-Hero: Commits murder as a vigilante and does not think twice about fighting pragmatically.
  • Artificial Limbs: Has a prosthetic right arm that stops below her shoulder.
  • Asian and Nerdy: She's of Japanese descent and super nerdy.
  • Assassin Outclassin': Mentions that people tried to kill her... And then tells Shawn that she was the one who killed them.
  • Awesomeness by Analysis: Was able to guess that Ida had a crush on Nana.
  • Blade Below the Shoulder: She has a prosthetic arm, if equipped, that turns into a sword. It can evidently cut through walls.
  • Blind Without 'Em: She can't see without her glasses, as seen when .EXE steals them.
  • Blood Knight: She loves to fight, as she frequently gets into altercations. Also makes sense given how she is a vigilante.
  • Collector of the Strange: She keeps most of her gacha items (like the Ghost Meter), collects gem dice, odd jewelry and dice made out of bone.
  • The Cynic: She's actually rather cynical down at heart and views the dark side of everything - including herself.
  • Curtains Match the Window: Has light blue hair and eyes.
  • Cyborg: She has a prosthetic right arm that she can replace.
  • Dark Secret: She's actually the vigilante known as Mania, and she's committed murder.
  • Dark and Troubled Past: Initially,
    • When she moved to Japan, she was rather angry at moving, and admits to Shawn that she lashed out, with one such incident causing her to lose her arm in an accident. It's revealed that she got bitten by rats as a kid for being disobedient, and it wound up infected, causing her arm to get amuptated. She was also only 9 years old at the time.
    • She had a guardian named Takeshi, but he has long since been dead.
    • She also had a close friend named Sasuke, however he died in front of her.
    • She's had to fend off assassins for being the daughter of a yzakua leader AND for rejecting this when she fled back to America.
  • Dented Iron: With the amount of scars she has, it's a surprise she hasn't been hospitalized.
  • Even Nerds Have Standards: Despite being really nerdy, she hates Shawn, though somewhat downplayed given that it is his attitude more than anything.
  • The Fashionista: Frequently dresses up fashionably. Especially during the party.
  • Gratuitous Japanese: Occasionally drops some Japanese terms in her speech. Justified in that Kagami is Japanese and sometimes forgets English words, but her roleplayer does not know Japanese.
  • Idiot Hair: One strand of hair is sticking up above the rest of her hair. Drawings from her roleplayer confirm that it moves with her emotions, and Kagami is rather... Strange.
  • Joke Weapon: Gets a water gun prosthetic arm that she promptly lends to Buckley.
  • Knight Templar: She takes the whole "yakuza are evil" shtick up a notch and has murdered their members to disrupt their business. And has murdered assassins who go after her or her family
  • Names to Run Away from Really Fast: Well, Kagami Kitai isn't really a name to run from. Her alter ego as a vigilante? Mania. That is certainly one to be wary of.
  • Noodle Incident: Mentions having assassins trying to kill her. And then casually mentions to Shawn that she killed the assassins before dropping the subject. Later subverted when she revealed why.
  • Opposites Attract: [[Spoiler: She's a murderous vigilante in love with the mischievous Taemon.]]
  • Official Couple: With Taemon, as of chapter 2's investigation.

  • Pitbull Dates Puppy: The pitbull to Taemon's puppy, given that she is a fighter and he isn't.
  • Red Oni, Blue Oni: The Red Oni to two people.
    • The Red Oni to Shawn's Blue Oni. She's rather emotional and more of a fighter, while Shawn is more intellectual and socially withdrawn.
    • The Red Oni to Taemon's Blue Oni. He approaches things logically, she approaches situations rashly.
  • Smart People Wear Glasses: Wears glasses, and is rather smart given that she noted several things about the Candypad before anyone else did.
  • Stepford Smiler: Justified and Zig Zagged. She's actually cynical and a murderous vigilante, but tries to hide it behind a smile. However the mask slipped a few times due to the stress.
  • Sympathetic Murder Backstory: She's killed yakuza and assassins, but it was generally because that was the only way to stop them, and Kagami views herself as an evil person due to it.
  • Swiss-Army Appendage: Given that she can switch her prosthetic arm out, she has multiple of them, including but not limited to: her normal one, one for swimming, one that hid a gun (though it broke), one that turns into a sword, an unidentified one, a water gun arm, and one that can play music.
  • Trauma Conga Line: She can't seem to catch a break. First off, she gets kidnapped as a kid and is separated from her siblings. Then she is forced to live with her bio father to become an oyabun. She rebels, and gets thrown into a room with rats that bite her. Her arm gets infected and has to get cut off. Her close friend and her guardian end up dying in front of her. She escapes and returns to America, but winds up becoming a vigilante to get revenge. And now she's in a killing game.
  • Why Did It Have to Be Snakes?: She's terrified of rats. Dearil has one, and depending on when her roleplayer remembers, Kagami either remembers and freaks out, or doesn't and acts normally. Though somewhat downplayed in Michael's, the rat, case, as he is in Dearil's pocket (and he assured her she wouldn't be harmed), so it could be that she knows that she's safe, or it's more of a out of sight, out of mind scenario.

Meiko Mitsuyu

Played by: Skele

The Ultimate Pilot who joins in chapter 2 after being found in a ballpit. She's a rather ditzy girl who despises her talent, but loves to make friends with everyone. • Making a Spectacle of Yourself: She has pink heart shaped glasses.
  • One-Steve Limit: Averted given that there is Rie Okada and Rie Nana.

  • The Reveal:
    • She was once an idol, but she left and used a pen name so she could gain fame with her own talents, not with her appearance.
    • In chapter 3, she comes out as a lesbian, revealing that she has repressed her sexuality for years.
  • Secret Relationship: In her past, she briefly dated another idol before they were both told that they had to stop it or else.

https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/roswell_wellington.png

  • Pet the Dog: Even though he has antagonized Shawn in the past, he started treating him better in the kitchen thread in chapter 3. At least until they got thrown in jail (since that thread is private, it is unknown how they interacted there).
  • Purely Aesthetic Glasses: He wears glasses everywhere, but they're just for the aesthetic.
  • Sanity Ball: Despite having a pet giraffe, Roswell is a voice of reason within the group. He frequently convinces Kagami not to respond with violence, and tells Shawn to speak up about his discomfort with the other students.
  • Sixth Ranger: Joins in chapter 2 after showing up in the lake.
  • Smart People Wear Glasses: Is rather smart and happens to wear glasses.
  • Southern-Fried Genius: Despite hailing from the South and speaking with a Texan accent, he is rather smart.
  • Tempting Fate: Decides to break the plates in the kitchen to make Shawn feel better. Despite Kagami and Taemon's warnings about breaking stuff, causing him to go to jail.
  • Theme Twin Naming: Roswell Wellington and Romeo Wellington.

Shane McMaddow

Played by: Sean

The Ultimate Artic Critic. He's a rather cheerful guy who loves art and hanging out with the other students. However, he does hold grudges if he is wrong, and makes his discomfort known. He is rather smart, and is an asset during the class trials. He hangs out with Niklas the most. He is 16 years old.

Shawn Barnett

Played by: Erica

The Ultimate Neuroscientist, hailing from America. A rather arrogant man, he is convinced that he will take over the world, and tends to be dismissive of others. He has plenty of anger management issues, but also seems to cry a lot when he thinks no one is looking. Most of the characters can't stand him, but they admit that he is really smart. He is 18 years old.

https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/shawn_5.png
  • Ambiguously Evil: Wants to take over the world and hates the others, but also doesn't hesitate to offer Rie Okada some help.
  • Awesomeness by Analysis: When talking to Kagami during the sad motive, he was able to pinpoint the fact that she resolves everything with violence and isn't able to hold up the morals she was taught... Despite her not focusing on that when she talked to him.
  • Blackmail: Ends up using Kagami's private admittance to him about killing her assassins in an attempt to keep her out of his way.
  • Blind Without 'Em: When he loses his glasses right before the first motive, he can't actually see anything.
  • Butt-Monkey: Nothing goes right for Shawn, and in several threads, he ends up having terrible things happen to him - like losing his glasses, for instance.
  • The Comically Serious: Takes everything seriously, which provides laughs when the others poke fun at him or get him to react a certain way - especially when he falls for certain jokes.
  • Deadpan Snarker: Seems to snark a lot at the others, generally Rie Nana.
  • Did Not Get the Girl: Fell for Nana but she confesses that she's a lesbian.
  • Dropped Glasses: Ends up losing his glasses after tripping.
  • Even Evil Has Loved Ones: Shawn's sister Amanda, per Word of God. And Rie Nana. Even after she broke his heart.
  • Evil Genius: Despite being a genius, Shawn is evil... Kind of. At most, he's just an antagonistic rival.
  • The Friend Nobody Likes: Barring the Ries, no one really likes Shawn. It gets to the point that everyone immediately argues with him, and even Goober is okay with the other characters beating him up. Becomes somewhat subverted later on thanks to Roswell.
  • Four Eyes, Zero Soul: Wears glasses and is extremely rude to everyone he meets.
  • Giving Someone the Pointer Finger: Shawn absolutely loves this trope. Expect him to use to during trials. A lot.
  • Idiot Hair: One of his hair strands sticks up. This works for him since he doesn't exactly take care of himself and he can be stupid at times.
  • Jerkass: Shawn is a jerk to everyone he meets, and immediately attempts to assert his superiority over everyone. He also calls everyone "peasants" and finds ways to insult them.
  • Jerkass Has a Point: Sure, Shawn was rude about how he put it, but he did have a point that Kagami was reckless in shooting the electrified fence.
  • Labcoat of Science and Medicine: He's a scientist wearing a lab coat.
  • Lethal Chef: He can't cook at all, and the first time he made a meal for himself in the castle, he got sick.
  • Mad Scientist: Embodies this trope as a scientist with rather odd experiments. And he wants to take over the world
  • Narcissist: Shawn is full of himself, constantly claiming that he is superior to everyone and that everyone else is a stupid peasant.
  • Not That Kind of Doctor: Defied, more or less. Everyone refers to him as a neuroscientist
  • One-Steve Limit: Averted. Since his name is similar to Shane's.
  • Red Oni, Blue Oni: The Blue Oni to Kagami's Red Oni and Rie Nana's Red Oni.
    • Shawn is rather cold, selfish and intellectually driven while Kagami is more emotional, friendly, and worried about the others.
    • Rie Nana is rather sociable, kind, and ditzy, while Shawn is cold and keeps to himself while also being rude.
  • Rummage Sale Reject: Shawn has 0 fashion sense and throws whatever he can on. Shown in full force during the chapter 1 party.
  • Sarcasm-Blind: Doesn't seem to realize that Taemon was sarcastic in how he viewed Shawn, seeming to think the other likes him when in reality, Taemon doesn't.
  • Scary Shiny Glasses: His glasses seem to shine whenever he pushes them up. Word of God joked that he put lights in his glasses to accomplish this.
  • Smug Snake: Thinks he's better than everyone, and barring Nana, he antagonizes everyone and acts like he is better than everyone. He also aspires to take over the world, but at most, he is merely a thorn in the side for the rest of the cast due to his actions.
  • Stoic Spectacles: Attempts to act calm and collected, but more than often fails at this.
  • Smart People Wear Glasses: Is rather smart and wears glasses.
  • TV Genius: Averted. Despite being an Ultimate Neuroscientist, he does have other hobbies, and he does have some social skills. He can't detect sarcasm though.

Suika Kurahashi

Played by: Chai

The Ultimate Dating Sim Writer. She is 17 years old.

https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/suika_1.png
  • Defictionalization: In-Universe example. She is wearing a uniform based off of one of the dating games she helped write.
  • Nervous Wreck: Whenever she hears anything about death or the killing game, she immediately freaks out. And clings to the nearest person.
  • Third-Person Person: Occasionally refers to herself by her name.
  • Security Cling:
    • Attempts this with Taemon during the killing game reveal and tries to get him to defend her. This fails.
    • Manages to succeed with Kagami however during the first investigation after seeing Anda's body.

Taemon Takahashi

Played by: Mattie

The Ultimate Cryptozoologist, hailing from Japan. A rather laid back man who studies cryptids, he tends to smile a lot and doesn't think much about certain predicaments. However, he does like to joke around a lot, and is actually rather tactical about certain situations. He is 18 years old.

As of chapter 2's investigation, he is dating Kagami.

https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/taemon.png
  • Alliterative Name: Taemon Takahasi.
  • Asian and Nerdy: Hails from Japan and is really nerdy.
  • Bullying a Dragon: Seems to believe that this is a good idea no matter what, consequences be damned.
    • In the cell thread, he more or less antagonized Ginger, per Word of God.
    • Later, at the lake with Ida, he ends up antagonizing her by asking her to reveal her secret (when she said no), and she snaps.
  • Conspiracy Theorist: Believes that Mothman and other cryptids exist. Justified given his talent.
  • Curb-Stomp Battle: Receives one from Ida after asking her why she's being cagey.
  • Dark and Troubled Past: He hasn't talked much about it, but he reveals that his sister is dead. He refuses to dwell on it as well.
  • Futile Hand Grab: Attempts to grab for Kagami's hand when she gets thrown into jail in chapter 2.
  • Harmless Electrocution: When he tries to climb the fence to escape, he gets electrocuted. He gets knocked out and is briefly paralyzed, but he's able to run around later.
  • Hidden Depths: Despite seeming pretty aloof at times, he is able to note several things about Candyland, and come up with possible reasons as to why everyone is here. He is also able to find out loopholes in several situations.
  • Humans Are Bastards: He can be a little shit, given how he suggested messing with Shawn and Ginger before deciding to mess with Ida.
  • Official Couple: With Kagami, as of chapter 2.
  • Opposites Attract: He's a normal guy, Kagami is a vigilante. Bit subverted in that he's not as innocent as he appears.
  • Perpetual Smiler: Seems to smile all the time, even after the killing game announcement. It seems to unnerve some of the other characters. He even smiles when Ida shoves him to the ground.
  • Pitbull Dates Puppy: The puppy to Kagami's pitbull, given her talent. Somewhat subverted in that he can be a little shit.
  • Red Oni, Blue Oni: To Kagami. She is emotional and approaches situations head on. Taemon is more reserved and approaches situations logically.
  • Say Your Prayers:
    • Joking tells Suika that since their last names are similar, he's going to kill her.
    • Later (again, jokingly) tells this to Kagami when he pretends to be a zombie and eat her brains. It Makes Sense in Context.
  • Stepford Smiler: Has shades of this. He generally has a carefree attitude and smiles a lot, but it falters a lot during the emotion motive.
  • Surprisingly Normal Backstory: Played with. Barring the death of his sister, he has a pretty normal backstory, and his parents run a bait and tackle shop.

     Deceased Students

  • Accidental Murder: Accidentally murders Anda through some poisoned chocolates she made, albeit she made them in an attempt to dispose of the poison.

Natsuki Ueno

Played by: Evian
The Ultimate Merchandise Collector. She is 18 years old. She died in chapter 2 after Shinzo hit her in the head with a rock.
https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/natsuki_9.png

Shinzo Asanuma

Played by: Sasha
The Ultimate Politician. He is 19 years old. He murdered Natsuki with a rock.
https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/shinzo.png
  • Chummy Commies: Is a communist but is very friendly and wants to help out however he can.
  • Cloud Cuckoo Lander: Immediately swallows a pie whole and spits out the pan before talking about his love of pie.
  • Cruel and Unusual Death: He falls down a hole, and has to dodge bullets. He then falls onto a katana, and then more bullets hit him. However, this time they tear him apart.
  • Hammer and Sickle: Seems to be the weapons of choice for Shinzo, so to speak. He pulls both out and poses with both for a photo.
  • The Heart: He's the heart of the group, trying to lighten up the others and make sure that everyone is alright.
  • Power Dyes Your Hair: When he goes into super mode, his hair turns red.
  • Super Mode: Briefly engages in one of these after hearing the word capitalism, and is powerful enough to power a small village.
  • Technicolor Eyes: Has red eyes.
  • Trademark Favorite Food: Pie. He is frequently seen eating pie.

     Other Characters

Princess Praline

The former Princess of Candyland. Her disappearance has caused chaos and due to a chain of events has lead to the current killing game to take place.

  • The Ghost: Despite her importance, she has yet to be seen.

Michael, the rat

Dearil's pet rat that he gets in chapter 2 from the gacha machine. Since then, he has been by Dearil's side and has become a character in his own right.

    Memes
With the multiple characters in Tasty Treats and the multiple jokes that can be made, it isn't surprising that there are memes about the cast.

  • Sheldon Cooper/Taemon Cooper/Sheldon Takahashi. note

  • There’s only straights in Tasty Treats.note
    • Soon replaced by There are no straights in Tasty Treats.

    Fridge

WARNING! Unmarked spoilers ahead. Read at your own discretion

Fridge Brilliance

  • Kagami might seem like a hardcore cosplayer with her prosthetic arm that turns into a sword. However, with her true talent being a vigilante, this makes sense - she never knows when she might get attacked, so she has to make sure that she is armed at all times. Also works as a Stealth Pun.

Fridge Horror

  • The sickness motive. With people getting different symptoms at different times, the Ultimates
  • The emotion motive. How many actions had been committed without restraint? How many things had been blurted without being reined in?

    Funny
Just because this is a roleplay about death and despair doesn't mean that this can't be funny.

Chapter 1

  • Goober suplexing Buckley then continuing to speak like nothing happened.
  • Hina setting Dearil's ass on fire as she hangs out with Myojin. It Makes Sense in Context.
  • Shawn making food so terrible, the color drains from his face.

Chapter 2

  • Roswell appearing through the LAKE.
  • Kagami broke a candle and got sent to jail. Taemon's response? Drop a candle then push another to join her.
    • The fact that the jail is called Gay Baby Jail
  • Kagami and Nana dming each other, where Kagami admits she kisses Taemon. Nana’s reaction is quite hilarious
Nana: oh my gosh thats like CLASSIC rom com stuff!!
    • To top it off, Kagami meant to send something to Nana (that being near Taemon allows her to feel safe). But she sends it to Taemon instead and doesn’t realize that until a good while later. While it was her role-player’s fault (she didn't realize she wrote Taemon instead of Nana) it is funny to see Kagami’s freakout
  • Taemon asks Ginger if he would get sent to jail for breaking hearts (since breaking something sends you to jail). Ginger says no. Taemon then asks if breaking the sound barrier sends you to jail, and Ginger admits that doing that would impress them... To which Taemon decides to accept the challenge.
  • Shawn returning to the text chat after breaking his hand, and then complaining about the number of private messages he has (mostly because Kagami spammed him a few times). He wasn't going to read them, until Kagami asks him not to. Then he reads them to piss her off.
    • To top it off... he has no idea that there is a text to speech function, and a speech to text function.
  • Roswell trolling Shawn about Nana. He made it seem like she is involved in the trial, but she actually isn't.

Chapter 3

  • Kagami reveals her secret - that she was kidnapped by the yakuza and suffered hell with them, and had killed several members as the Ultimate Vigilante. Taemon's response, however, ends up taking the cake.
    • "My family just owns a bait and tackle shop"
  • Kagami eventually reveals her talent to the others. It ends up leading to a line of funny moments from multiple characters.
    • Shane and Kagami have a funny moment
Shane: Can we re-classify Ginger as Yakuza?
    Kagami: Can we what??????????????????
Kagami: Also Shane. I'm a vigilante, not a hitwoman. But if Ginger was a yakuza, they'd be dead by now
    • Shane really doesn't like Shawn still
Shane: Besides that bombshell anyone else got somethin to share? Like a way out, Duct tape for Shawn's mouth-
    • Nana asking what the yakuza is, and everyone pausing to explain it to her.
  • 49 floating on top of LEMONADE. He considers this a normal Tuesday for himself. Ida on the other hand...
Ida: "..What in the Gods loving fuck are you?"
  • The burger thread.
    • Shane and Ida make burgers. Shane got close to the oil and burned, but he called it a burger monster.
    • Kagami offers to use her vigilante skills to fight the oil
    • Buckley sees Shane's offer and wants to join in.
Buckley: would yall mind if i swung by to grab some food? that stuff yall cooked looks good!
    Meiko: yes

Taemon gets his ass handed to him + relevant threads (Post Chapter 3 motive reveal).

  • The Lake thread with Taemon and Ida has its moments.
    • Taemon uwu'd at Ida verbally.
Tameon: "You can keep secrets, but I can’t huwt youw feewings?"
  • Kagami finds Taemon at the lake and immediately freaks out over him... Before immediately pulling him a tight hug that caused him pain.
  • As a result of Ida beating up Taemon, Kagami messages Ida and reveals plenty of lore about her backstory while threatening to keep an eye on her. Ida's response?
    Ida: ok?? lmao, have fun
  • Ida comes across Shawn and he immediately starts to analyze her, without even having a normal hello. He just noted she was angry.
    • To top it off, he even says this before explaining his opinion. He still hates Taemon.
Shawn: "I would also like to preface this by saying I am not siding with Takahashi by any means. God, I would never."
    • He doesn't seem to hold Kagami in high regard either.
Shawn: "... that murder was something that would never cross our minds in a million years... for most of us, anyway."
  • Ida reveals that she wasn't sure if she was going to kill Taemon. Shawn's response is the crowning moment of funny.
Shawn: "So. That is why you will be seeing me once a week. What time and day works best for you?"
    • Ida confesses to being violent and SHAWN TAKES IT IN STRIDE. Somewhat justified given his talent, but still.

Meta

  • Meiko's note on Shawn is just "Sheldon Cooper" and she wants him to say Bazinga, according to her inner thoughts on the relationship chart. It's especially funny given that she likes everyone else.
  • During chapter 2, Taemon’s note on Kagami in the relationship chart read as “Ah. …. Fuck.” And he listed her as ‘crush’. Kagami meanwhile noted several things about him, before adding “And he's hot too. Fuck. And I kissed him too.”
  • In chapter 3, Roswell broke some plates while talking to Shawn, and Shawn joins him. What was funny was that Rin, Kagami's roleplayer and one of the mods, had to remind Erica and Vinny (the roleplayers of Shawn and Roswell respectively) that they needed to get thrown in jail for breaking something. They promptly did so with a laugh. Even better? Erica was the head mod who put down that breaking something lands you in jail.
  • The gay baby jail thread is frequently closed to the public, but the roleplayers who manage to get in there post funny scenes without context.

    Trivia
  • Acting for Two
    • Shawn and Ginger are both played by Erica.
    • Kagami and Goober are both played by Rin
    • Dice and Gumball are both played by Verdant.
  • Ascended Meme
    • Before the reveal of the third motive, there were jokes about a fitness gram pacer motive. Cue the characters in the roleplay mentioning that they lucked out not getting it.
  • Divorced Installment: This was originally suppose to be a spin-off to Weeping Willows Despair, with connections to the previous story. However, Erica admitted that she wanted to take a bit of a break from the Weeping Willows franchise, so the tie-ins were dropped. This is now in an Alternate Universe to Weeping Willows, barring the mention of the mansion as a Shout-Out.
  • Fake Nationality: Several characters don't share the same nationality as their roleplayers
    • Taemon, Kagami, and Meiko are Japanese, yet their roleplayers are American.
    • Natsuki is Japanese, yet her roleplayer is Australian.
    • Ida is Icelandic, but her roleplayer is American.
    • Buckley is American but his roleplayer is Canadian.
  • Fan Nickname: Several
    • Ida is sometimes called Ida Sansmaeda, due to her white hair and jacket resembling that of Sans and Komaeda.
    • Taemon is sometimes called Sheldon Cooper, due to his resemblance to the character.
  • Lying Creator: Lovely, Ida's roleplayer, was asked by another roleplayer if she was going to be playing as Ida. She told them no, then revealed that yes she was playing her.
  • Production Posse: One of the creators of Weeping Willows Spirithand created this, and several of the roleplayers of Weeping Willows returned. They are Erica, Rin, Verdant, Evian, Cosmic, Sunny, Lilly, Froggy, Skele, Mattie, Sasha, and Denae.
  • Schedule Slip: Due to Weeping Willows Spirithand lasting two months longer than expected (due to some hiatuses and midterms) and the 2019-2020 Corona virus outbreak forcing the admins and artists to scramble their schedules around, the roleplay start was pushed from December of 2019 to late March of 2020.
  • Throw It In!: Several events in the roleplay happen because of jokes that end up getting taken seriously.
    • Kagami shooting the fence and biting a peppermint gun happened because the mods were talking and one of them joked about Kagami having a candy arm and Goober biting a gun.
  • Trolling Creator: Erica is fond of this trope, having done the same thing in Spirithand. She sometimes mentions doing something in the setting... Then pulling out the rug under the players. And adding random things to the gacha. Or just posting screenshots out of context. You never know what to expect.
  • What Could Have Been:
    • In the warm up for the roleplay, Shawn and Kagami got into a fight and it ended with Shawn stabbing Kagami... With this being their first meeting. However, this does not happen in the actual story.
    • Erica admits that she was kind of hoping that someone would beat up Shawn on the first day of the roleplay. This did not happen, though he did get punched in the face during chapter 2's investigation.
    • Some other pairings were considered for this roleplay, including Dearil and Shawn as a couple.
    • Taemon was suppose to leave Ida alone... Before he decided to mess with her.
  • Word of God: Some information has been confirmed outside of the story, such as:
    • Some backstory aspects for Kagami
    • Ida and Kagami's roleplayers were conversing, and they agreed that Ida was the stronger one of the two.
    • Ida is currently bottling up her anger and she might explode in a rampage.
    • Niklas and Ida are actually the closest to unlocking Shane's lore, according to Shane's roleplayer.

    Nightmare Fuel
Despite being set in a Candyland, this place can be utter hell at times, and the perfect place to have nightmares.

Prologue

  • First off, the premise. You wake up in a land made out of candy. There are other strangers nearby, as well as sentient candies that can kick your ass. The twizzler fence is electrified, and there are only sweets to eat. And you can't get out by normal means.
    • In fact, the only way to get out is to murder someone... And get away with it. Doing so means that everyone else dies, and you might have to see their executions.
    • To top it off, everyone is a stranger. While some are fans of each other, they don't know if there are any established killers in the group. Given that Kagami more or less confirmed that she has committed murder, one has to wonder how many other killers are here.
  • Shawn holding blackmail on Kagami. It makes you wonder what else Shawn is hiding, and if he could be a potential threat. The fact that he can analyze people due to his talent makes this worse. Especially since he is accurate in his analysis.
  • The fact that there's sentient candy as tall as the average human, if not taller. Rather disconcerting as you could be minding your own business, and you run into a gummy snake that is the size of an anaconda... That can talk.

Chapter 1

  • Ginger smacking Kagami across the room and into a wall. Sure, Kagami lucked out in not getting injured. But the fact that Ginger, who is 1 foot tall, is capable of that, is nothing short of terrifying. Especially with Kagami being one of the stronger students.
  • Kagami's prosthetic arm breaking when she shot the candy fence. The fact that the fence ricocheted the hits just solidifies that everyone is stuck.
    • Not to mention that Kagami managed to more or less sneak a gun into the setting, as well as a sword as revealed in chapter 2. What else has been smuggled in?
  • The fact that everyone's wardrobe is modified raises concerns. What doesn't Ginger know about the Ultimates...?
  • The first motive. Knowing that everyone is slowly getting sicker means that you can only sit and watch yourself and your friends deteriorate before succumbing...
  • Anda's death. She looks so peaceful... And with the reveal that the poison that killed her sends you into eternal slumber without you knowing, means that she probably felt sleepy... And never woke up.

Chapter 2

  • .EXE's appearance. Four students - Kagami, Shawn, Shane, and Niklas, go into the slums, and happen to find an odd house. The experience is terrifying, to say the least.
    • To clarify, the four of them end up getting attacked by .EXE. Kagami loses her glasses, which means that she can't see and has to rely on the others for guidance. Given that she was the muscle in this scenario, this doesn't bode well.
    • Niklas got chocked out, and he couldn't see who did it.
    • Shawn straight up got kidnapped by the unknown figure. When the group finds him, Shawn is CLEARLY traumatized by how he was grabbed, and refuses to speak for a bit.
      • To add to the above point, the others debated leaving him behind. Can you imagine getting kidnapped, and the group you showed up with disappearing? You have no way of knowing if they died, got captured, or left you behind.
    • While Kagami suggested splitting up (so that she can find Shawn while Niklas and Shane escape), Shane vetoes it. Kagami isn't afraid of what could happen, but the thing is, she is the only one of the four who can fight. She is also the only one with a flashlight. Shane and Niklas don't even know the layout, and admittedly neither does Kagami while their opponent does. How could Shane and Niklas even escape?
    • Shane getting separated from the others. He gets terrified, since he can't see them. Then a masked figure with green light steals his mask and flees... but not before towering over him while wearing his mask. The fact that the figure was silent makes matters worse.
    • When .EXE reveals themselves, they have a creepy look which scares Niklas and Shawn.
  • .EXE in general. You don't know what he looks like, his mask is creepy, he has green lights around him, and he has a voice synthesizer.
  • Chapter 2's motive. Your emotions are no longer in your control, and they change daily. And you don't know how the others will react to it.
  • Break one of the rules? Off to jail with you! The fact that a sentient hand that comes out to grab you makes it worse. It's not known what fully happens, as the thread was a private thread, and Kagami and Taemon won't exactly state what went down.
    • It's a throwaway comment from Kagami, but she mentions that she she lost her mouth in Gay Baby Jail. She regained it, but it is still terrifying.
  • Natsuki's death. The way her eyes are open in death are... Unsettling.
  • Shawn punching out Roswell. Especially with how the motive ended (with everyone regaining control of their emotions), this implied that there is a lot of rage within him.
  • The floor dropping out underneath the students. They aren't giving a warning, and for all they know, they could have been dropped to their deaths.
  • Shinzo's execution. His body gets riddled with bullets, and the students have to watch/listen.

Chapter 3

  • Ida's appearance. Not anything scary with her (to some), but she was just wandering, and ended up in Candyland, of all places. She doesn't know what happened to her family, or if she'll be able to see them once more.
  • Meiko's drawing of a burger fairy. It looks more like a monster than a friendly person.
  • Roswell wasn't aware of the rule that breaking something would land you in jail, so it was terrifying for him AND Shawn (since Shawn accidentally broke a plate) to suddenly get yoinked into jail.
  • The third motive being the secret motive - if no one dies, everyone's secrets will get revealed. What secrets would be revealed, and the students realize that some of their number could be evil.
  • The lake thread with Taemon and Ida. Taemon decides to prod at Ida, asking her questions, and she SNAPS.
    • The way she shoves him to the ground and keeps him in place while considering ways to make him suffer.
    • And the way that Taemon decides to keep going and still antagonize Ida.

Gacha

Let's talk about the gacha and several of the items inside of it.
  • The fact that you can get electrocuted. Imagine trying to pull a random item, and you get shocked instead. You don't get injured, but still.
  • The confetti. It comes as a surprise, and anyone who does not like surprises will be terrified by this
  • The option where the hand tries to grab the character. Just trying to pull something, but you get pulled instead.
  • In a way, the Gruit - the Gru Suit. It is terrifying, ugly, and has been pulled several times.
  • The vigilante costume. The fact that Ginger made a replica of a murderous vigilante who targets the yakuza is... Concerning, to say the least.

Tasty Treats Despair contains examples of:

  • Acceptable Breaks from Reality: Many things don't seem to phase the characters or roleplayers, such as
    • Kagami's multiple prosthetic arms (as well as the fact that the one here are made out of candy)
    • Animals being in the gacha, including a giraffe and rats.
  • The Ace: To become an Ultimate, you have to be the best in your field at a young age.
  • Alternate Universe: To the Danganronpa series, as there are Ultimates, mascots, and a killing game, but the characters and settings differ greatly.
  • Always Murder: All the deaths in this roleplay occur from murder. No preexisting diseases kill anyone.
  • Ambiguous Time Period: It seems to be set in modern day, but Kagami's prosthetics, the Candypads, and the gacha indicate that some futuristic elements are in place. Nana's profile even lampshades it by stating that she was born in 20XX.
  • Anthropomorphic Food: Goober is a giant gummy bear that can speak, and Gumball is a talking gummy snake. And Ginger is a talking Gingerbread man.
  • Anyone Can Die: The premise of the roleplay. Anda, Natsuki, and Shinzo die VERY early on.
  • Artistic License – Gun Safety: Yeah no. Kagami shouldn't have been able to dodge those bullets after she fired them with the gun. Also somehow didn't injured anyone with them.
  • Atomic F-Bomb: While many characters do swear a lot, Meiko delivers one of these during the second trial, directed at the killer.
  • Badass in Distress: Played with. Kagami broke a candle and got sent to gay baby jail (really jail) for it, and Taemon follows her to help her get out. He winds up being the one to save her.
  • Bag of Holding: Played with. Kagami keeps pulling things out of her pockets and prosthetic arm with no indication of how much she actually carries. Shane also seems to have one as well as he can carry everything from the gacha with ease despite not being physically strong.
  • Beneath Notice: How the mastermind is hiding themselves.
  • Big Bad: The mastermind of this killing game, although their identity is unknown.
  • This Billboard Needs Some Salt: The characters can actually eat the scenery. Some students, like Dearil, Shinzo and Meiko, take advantage of this. Others do not.
  • Black Blood: Like the game it is based off, the deaths and executions use Danganronpa's pink blood.
  • Blackmail: Shawn uses Kagami's secret (that she murdered the assassins who tried to kill her) against her in an attempt to keep her out of his way.
  • Breaking Old Trends: Breaks several of the trends set by the Danganronpa series.
    • There's actually 21 students instead of 16.
    • The cast is not split evenly when it comes to gender, and even has some nonbinary students.
    • There isn't any students masquerading as the Ultimate ????
    • With the cast diversity, there isn't any character that fit the normal archetypes including the token Non-Standard Character Design.
    • There's three mascots instead of one. Albeit two seem to side with the students.
  • Cast Full of Gay: Barring Niklas, Suika, and 49 (whose sexualities are unknown), everyone in the cast are either gay, bi, pan, or ace biromantic. Yes, this does include Rie Nana, who came out in chapter 3. To be fair, most of the roleplayers themselves are LGBT+.
  • Cast Of Snow Flakes: Each student is distinct from each other in appearance, and each one has a talent that differs from each other.
  • Characters Dropping Like Flies: The game started with 19 characters. While 4 more were added, the premise states that many of them will die, and 4 are dead already...
  • Crapsaccharine World: It looks all cute and sugary with everything made out of candy. But as you look closer...
  • Crazy-Prepared: Ginger. They've anticipated every single conceivable way one could try to escape Candyland, meaning that everyone will be stuck here.
  • Crush Filter: During the second motive, plenty of the characters felt love. Some of them had their crushes amplified to where this happened to them. Notably averted with Dearil.
    • Definitely implied when Nana sees Ida for the first time. She is so stunned by how pretty she is, she forgets how to talk.
  • Did You Just Flip Off Cthulhu?: Frequently, the ultimates find ways to mess with Ginger, or just flat out ignore him. Taemon did this a lot in the cell thread.
  • Downer Beginning: The students wake up and find out that they get kidnapped. They don't know who did it, Taemon gets electrocuted, and then everyone meets the mascot Ginger, who informs them that they are in a Killing Game. Despite the humorous moments, it goes downhill from there.
  • Fake Arm Disarm: When Kagami shoots the fence, one of the bullets breaks her prosthetic arm. Except it was one made of candy.
  • False Utopia: This place seems like a utopia at first! However, in chapter 2, the characters find the slums, throwing in question how much of a "utopia" this place really is.
  • Five-Man Band: A five man band soon forms within the group of students: Naoki, Kagami, Shinzo, Shane, and Buckley.
    • Naoki is The Leader, given that he is the first one to come up with a plan of action.
    • Kagami is The Lancer, subverting expectations slightly since despite being the only female of the group, she is not the Heart. She provides counterparts to Naoki's ideas, and tends to react with violence more quickly than he does.
    • Shinzo is The Heart, subverting the trope a bit given that Kagami is the only girl. Shinzo attempts to cheer up everyone, and cares deeply for their wellbeing.
    • Buckley is The Big Guy, standing taller than the others in the group. He's also the strongest, and agrees to be the muscle.
    • Shane is The Smart Guy, as he is not physically strong but he does have multiple plans.
  • Foreshadowing:
    • Rie Nana's internal thoughts mention that kissing Shawn felt wrong. This was because she was a lesbian and had to deal with compulsive heterosexuality.
    • Kagami's response to attack Shawn in chapter 2 to defend Roswell, as well as her prosthetic arms and her combat training, hint that she actually has a different talent - Ultimate Vigilante.
  • Gravity Is a Harsh Mistress: In chapter 2, the foyer's floor gives out, and the characters plummet to the trial room. Except for 49, who doesn't even notice that the floor disappeared. Somewhat justified in that he is a magician, but still. Oh, and then he floats back up.
  • Harmless Electrocution: Frequently happens because of the electric candy fence and the gacha machine dealing it out on different occasions.
  • Hollywood Healing: Averted and played straight. Several of the characters get injured, and they show off the injuries for a while. But at the same time, some injuries do go away rather quickly.
  • Humans Are Bastards: Several of the characters in this roleplay are not good people, with them insulting others or injuring each other. These include Shawn, Ida, and Taemon.
  • I Have Many Names: Kagami Kitai = Mania.
  • If We Get Through This…: Many characters frequently talk to each other about what they plan to do once they escape.
  • I'm a Doctor, Not a Placeholder: Kagami says this when she is explaining to Shane her real talent.
Kagami: Also Shane. I'm a vigilante, not a hitwoman.
  • Joke Weapon: Quite a few weapons in the gacha fall under this, like the water gun arm.
  • Leaning on the Fourth Wall:
    • At one point, Shawn pretends he's acting like he's in Ace Attorney. Kagami then takes the time to chastise him and say that it was more of "bullet refutation" - which is "dangan ronpa" in Japanese (since Kagami was speaking Japanese). The roleplay is inspired by Danganronpa with some Ace Attorney thrown in.
    • Kagami mentions later on that it would suck to get stuck in a haunted mansion, haunted town, or a haunted amusement park. Those are the settings for Weeping Willows Despair, Weeping Willows Spirithand, and the upcoming Weeping Willows Critterville.
  • Level Ate: The entire place is made out of candy and sweets. Even the beds, much to Taemon's chagrin.
  • Love Is in the Air: During the second motive, love was one of the emotions affected, and many preexisting feelings of love were either strengthened or came to the surface.
  • Mood Whiplash: The roleplay can go from serious to funny in the blink of an eye, and back again.
  • Neck Lift: Kagami briefly gives one of these to Ginger after the killing game announcement.
  • One-Steve Limit: Averted given that there is Rie Okada and Rie Nana. Also with Shane and Shawn.
  • Punched Across the Room: After Kagami lifts up Ginger to threaten them, the gingerbread person smacks her with their lollipop, and the gamemaster gets sent flying across the room.
  • Running Gag: There's a few of them, actually
    • Everyone bullying Shawn at one point or another.
    • Shane trying to convince Kagami that Ginger is yakuza so that she could kill it, and Kagami responding that she isn't a hitwoman.
  • School Forced Us Together: Played with. While many of them have attended Hope's Peak at the same time, they may not have come across each other during that time. But they did get sent to Candyland because they went to the same school or got scouted by it.
  • Ship Sinking: The roleplayers of Rie Nana and Shawn Barnett sunk the Nana x Shawn pairing when Nana came out as a lesbian. However, Jeremie (Nana's roleplayer) feels guilty for Nana unintentionally leading Shawn on.
  • Sir Not-Appearing-in-This-Trailer: Meiko, .EXE, and Roswell do not show up in any of the Tasty Treats teasers or the cast reveal, hiding the fact that they were transfer students that show up in chapter 2.
    • Ida joins this group as well, showing up in chapter 3.
  • Sliding Scale of Silliness vs. Seriousness: Some moments of the roleplay are entirely serious - the killing game announcement, for instance. Then there are moments that are funny - such as Shawn making food that is so terrible he nearly gets sick. The majority of the roleplay seems to prefer to be serious and funny at the same time.
  • Small, Secluded World: Candyland seems to take place in its own little world, and the cast can't go back to the real world for now.
  • Succession Crisis: Briefly. With Praline missing, nothing gets done. Ends up resolved (for now) with Rie Okada being princess.
  • Sugar Bowl: Candyland was a happy utopia were nothing bad happened... Until recently. It is also made of sugar and sweets.
  • Unexpected Successor: Rie Okada. She winds up being the princess of Candyland, despite being human.
  • Wall of Text: When Shane asks Kagami over the private messages if she knows any board games the group can play, she sends him several walls of text detailing different games they could do.
  • Waking Up Elsewhere: The characters wake up in Candyland, not entirely sure how they got there in the first place.
  • We ARE Struggling Together: Several of the students do try to work together, however due to some of the characters being stubborn or killing others, this fails to pass.
  • Wild Card: Several of the characters can qualify, given that their overall alignment is ambiguous.
    • Kagami is one, given her need to impulsively jump into a fight and the fact that she has committed murder once before.
    • .EXE as well, given that you don't know whose side they are on - the Ultimates, or their own?
    • Ida has joined their ranks as well, given how she snapped and attacked Taemon. That being said it's hard to know which side she is on.
