Adventure Tropes

     Adventure Tropes
  • Apathetic Citizens: The citizens of Winhall aren't faced at all by all the kobold induced horror around them.
  • Bizarro Universe: The group unknowingly enters a fey globule upon reaching Winhall. In the globule a circus has set up camp in the city and holds everyone captive with their less then stellar artistry. There's also plenty of violence and blood, but no one seems to bat an eye.
  • Dreaming of Things to Come: Aventus receives a vision from Phex, which leads the group to travel north.
  • Go Mad from the Revelation: After their night in Ambelmund, during which Aventus received a vision from his god Phex, the group encounter a Blessed One of Phex in the morning, who's gone mad from the same vision. Liloë helps him come to his senses.
  • Heroism Won't Pay the Bills: As of now the group is struggling to cover their expenses, even though Aventus does his best to secure them transportation and accommodation at cheap prices. The only one with a regular income is Liloë, who will play for tips in the taverns they stay at.
  • I Have This Friend: Kazanyo asks a mage they're traveling with, whether she can teach him a certain spell... before remembering that he doesn't want anyone to know, that he is a mage himself and is disguised as a warrior. He then does this, which is promptly lampshaded by Aventus:
Kazanyo: "I always wanted to learn the Armatrutz-spell. Uh... I mean, a friend of mine wants to learn it."
Aventus: "Your friend, who's also a warrior."
    Kazanyo: "Right."
Aventus: "A very educated warrior apparently."
  • Plagued by Nightmares: Liloë was this as part of the backstory prior to the groups meeting. They were in fact not nightmares, but cries for help transmitted by her fey patroness and were bad enough for her to vomit upon waking up.
  • Running Gag:
    • Kazanyo being terrible with directions.
    • V’Crs’Sra not understanding some basic human concept, due to her very different cultural background.
  • Vagueness Is Coming: Aventus vision foretells of the red moon, representing the orcish god Tairach overshadowing the real moon. What it means is up to interpretation.

The Group

Tropes involving the whole group

  • Aerith and Bob: Their names range from common names written slightly different (Phelix), to usual fantasy fare (Aventus, Liloë, Kazanyo), to near unpronounceable (V’Crs’Sra).
  • Fighter, Mage, Thief: The team is quite mage-heavy.
    • Aventus is the Thief, though being blessed, he possesses pseudo-magical abilities.
    • Liloë is the Mage, though with very limited utility.
    • Kazanyo can go either way as the Fighter or the Mage.
    • Phelix is the Mage.
    • V’Crs’Sra is another mage.
  • Four-Philosophy Ensemble: The members fit like this:
    • Aventus is the Realist.
    • Liloë the Optimist.
    • Kazanyo the Cynic.
    • And Phelix and V’Crs’Sra are the Apathetic.
  • Four-Temperament Ensemble: So far it seems to go like this:
    • Aventus is Melancholic.
    • Liloë is Sanguine.
    • Kazanyo is Choleric.
    • Phelix and V’Crs’Sra are Phlegmatic.
  • Interspecies Friendship: Considering the racial makeup of the group (two humans, two half-elves and an Achaz) this is bound to happen.
  • Multinational Team: Downplayed Though the twins, Kazanyo and Phelix are technically all from the Middenrealm, their respective home provinces are about as far apart as it can get, with the twins living in Albernia, Kazanyo hailing from Almada and Phelix traveling all over. V’Crs’Sra is the only one truly foreign, being from the Svelttal.
  • Two Girls to a Team: Liloë and V’Crs’Sra.

Tropes involving some, but not all members of the group

  • Beauty, Brains, and Brawn: Gender Inverted with Phelix being the Beauty, Aventus the Brains and Kazanyo (who, while by no means dumb, usually advocates for the most direct and violent approach) the Brawns.
  • Foolish Sibling, Responsible Sibling: Zig-Zagged. Aventus is by nature the more careful of the twins, but he has a quick temper, while his sister is a happy-go-lucky person, not prone to anger.
  • Half-Human Hybrid: The twins, being Half-Elves.
  • Half-Identical Twins: Averted The twins are recognizably siblings, but are visually distinct enough, not to be confused for each other and their characters and abilities aren't similar at all.
  • Like an Old Married Couple: Lampshaded by Liloë and aggreed upon by the rest of the group. Aventus and Kazanyo are constantly bickering with each other like they are this.
  • Living Emotional Crutch: Aventus is this to Liloë, who Hates Being Alone.
  • Missing Mom: The twins mother left them, when they were five.
  • Money Dumb: V’Crs’Sra is this, due to her culture not having much use for human currency. Liloë is also bad with money and hands all her earnings over to her brother, leaving him to manage the combined funds.
  • One Head Taller: All three men are this to V’Crs’Sra. Special mention goes to Aventus, who is 6'2 while V’Crs’Sra is only 5'2.
  • Psychic Link: Liloë shares this with her brother, as well as their mother.
  • Really Gets Around:
    • Downplayed with Liloë, who flirts a lot but doesn't go much farther.
    • Played straight with Phelix who has multiple partners in the same night.
The two of them end up making out within two days after meeting.
  • Vagabond Buddies: The twins were this prior to meeting the rest. Now they all are.

Individual Characters

     Aventus Collen
Race: Half-Elf
Culture: Middenrealmer
Profession: Blessed One of Phex

     Liloë Collen
Race: Half-Elf
Culture: Middenrealmer
Profession: Ceoladir

  • Affectionate Nickname: Her brother calls her "Lilo".
  • Awesome, but Impractical: Most of her abilities count, since she needs to play an instrument for some time for her magic to take effect, but special mention goes to her "Emotion Transfer". It allows her to instantly absorb up to three levels of confusion, fear or stupor. The downside is, that after 24 hours, these are transferred onto her.
  • Bargain with Heaven: Made a bargain with Farindel Wipfelwind, a powerful fey, in exchange for being telepathically linked to her brother.
  • Brown Note: Her "Earsplitting Sound" ability produces this. Anyone who hears it has to make a Willpower check to keep from covering their ears and gains a level of confusion if they don't. It made a group of goblins who planned to ambush the group flee.
  • Friend to All Children: She is very fond of and likes to play with children.
  • Friend to All Living Things: As a bard she's already a people person and her friendliness isn't limited to humans.
  • Hates Being Alone: She gets anxious without her brother and downright panics when she's alone.
  • Heart Is an Awesome Power: Compared to guild mages likes Kazanyo or witches like Phelix, Liloë is much more limited in her choice of magical abilities and entirely unable to learn spells, having to stick with magical melodies. However, these have proven to be excessively useful so far.
  • Hidden Weapons: Has a throwing dagger in each boot.
  • Horny Bard: Downplayed She is easily infatuated, but it never goes beyond flirting and snogging.

     Kazanyo Sensendengler
Race: Human
Culture: Middenrealm
Profession: Bounty Hunter / Black Mage (Fasar Academy of Mental Power)

  • Bad Liar: Tries to hide the fact he's a black mage. Badly.
  • Bunny-Ears Lawyer: Despite being lethally bad at directions he is the groups strongest fighter, even though as of yet, he's had little opportunity to showcase his skills.
  • Healing Hands: Much to Aventus delight. And they're so soft!
  • Luke Nounverber: "Sensendengler" meaning "Scythe-Whetter".
  • Magic Knight: Kazanyo is not only a sword-fighter, but also a (badly) concealed black mage.
  • No Sense of Direction: One of his most defining characteristics is Kazanyos absolute inability to find his way to anywhere. Lampshaded early on by Aventus:
"Kazanyo, you stay here. You're no use to us moving."
  • Not Evil, Just Misunderstood: Part of the reason he hides being black mage, is the prejudice against black mages being evil.
  • Pragmatic Hero: Is not above stealing, if the owner of the items in question isn't present and Kazanyo wants said item. This clashes with Aventus sense of justice.
  • Significant Birth Date: Was born during the nameless days, a period of time that's considered cursed. This comes with a lot of prejudice, so he tries to avoid it being brought up. Tries.
  • Teleportation: He has the "Transversalis" spell, which allows the caster to teleport.
  • The Smart Guy: He did study at an academy after all.

     Phelix & Mikaya
Race: Human
Culture: Zahori
Profession: Cat Witch

     V’Crs’Sra
Race: Achaz
Culture: Tribal
Profession: Shaman

  • Affectionate Nickname: Mostly called "Vika" due to her full name being hard to pronounce.
  • Crouching Moron, Hidden Badass: Because of her poor understanding of human customs, she can come of as The Ditz. She is however a shaman of her people, able to communicate with the ancestors and summon elemental powers.
  • Fish out of Water: She's traveling specifically to learn about other cultures and countries, before taking over leadership of her tribe.
  • Funny Foreigner: She's an Achaz and comes from a very different cultural background, which often leads to some confusion.
