Lucifer Morningstar

Appears in: Nights In Lonesome Arkham | A Matter of Pride | The Fall (2018) | Heart of Greed | The Kiss of Wrath | A Conspiracy of Serpents | Give Us Forever | Reign in Hell

Stand with me here as equals, with pride in yourselves. In what we have made. Look within and help me build anew here. As we choose.

The strongest of the fallen angels sans Aleviel herself, and the Lord of Hell. He is also Hardestadt' — or Daemon's — father, through Aleviel.

  • Adaptational Heroism: In The Bible and inspired works such as Paradise Lost and The Divine Comedy Lucifer's fall resulted in the beginning of hell. Here, hell existed long before Lucifer's rebellion. He's also the Big Good, unlike his counterparts where they're either Big Bads or Villain Protagonists.
  • A Father to His Men: Lucifer loves his followers and they love him dearly in turn. They're a family.
  • Affably Evil: He's technically evil by virtue of being the devil, but he's polite, charming and pleasant.
  • Always Someone Better: He admits he knew Aleviel would forever 'walk ahead' of him for the rest of eternity.
  • Archenemy: His greatest enemy in Reign in Hell is High King Azazel Baal, his Evil Counterpart and foil.
  • Authority Equals Asskicking: The Lord of Hell and worthy of all the power that title bestows. Lucifer is capable of taking on Nyarlathotep directly at the height of his powers. Nyarlathotep even claims that a fight between them at their best would put the entire universe at risk. At one point, he shows just how strong he is by trashing two Great Old Ones when highly weakened.
  • Benevolent Boss: Very pleasant and caring to those under him, especially the Seven Sins.
  • Big Good: Serves as this to the heroes in Nights in Lonesome Arkham in lieu of Aleviel's absence.
  • Broken Pedestal: Hardestadt grew up loving, respecting and admiring him. The events of the second holy war left him with a deep bitterness that Lucifer never tried to properly mend.
  • Brother–Sister Incest: Has slept with many of his 'sisters' among the angels, Aleviel, Satannus, Belial, Mammon and Leviathan being the ones named. All these relationships continued for eons.
  • Brought Down to Badass: Getting chucked into Dagon and Hydra's dimension strips him of most of his powers. He still wrecks the both of them.
  • Byronic Hero: In Reign in Hell, Lucifer suffers from the guilt of the horrific war in heaven, balancing his sins with his good intentions, but as to modern day, is unable to truly escape them.
  • Cain and Abel: the Cain to his younger twin Michael. It's revealed they were once very close before the Fall.
  • Chick Magnet: Belial is head over heels for him, as are the other female Sins. He and Aleviel were almost Love at First Sight and one of the most powerful demons in hell is deeply in love with him. He also indicates he has a lot of children by many mothers in hell.
  • Chivalrous Pervert: Lucifer has a lot of kids by different mothers, and is indicated to get around a lot, but he treats consent as completely sacred following his obsession with choice. Notably he refuses to lay a hand on Aleviel again unless she wants him to and with Belial makes it very clear that if anything happens between them, he wants it to be her decision.
  • Curbstomp Battle: Delivers an utter beatdown to Dagon and Hydra before nearly erasing them, as well as to several archangels during the Fall.
  • Dark Messiah: The savior of the downtrodden 'outcasts' of heaven, who helped them to accept themselves, and nearly took heaven. Even after this failed, he led them into finding a new home in hell where their very existence was their triumph.
  • Drama-Preserving Handicap: He's the strongest of the good guys and not by a little, so he spends most of the story without his powers as not to end things by snapping his fingers.
  • Enemy Mine: Forms one of these with Michael to protect both Heaven and Hell in the climax of Nights in Lonesome Arkham.
  • Even Evil Has Standards: 'Evil' may be a stretch, but he's ruthless and dangerous. Nonetheless, the depredations of Nyarlathotep and Azazel Baal disgust him.
  • Fallen Angel: Devils are fallen angels who have transitioned into becoming something between angel and demon.
  • Famed In-Story: Who doesn't know who Lucifer is? Even the Great Old Ones know him by his rep.
  • Fantastic Racism: He is not fond of Great Old Ones, and finds Dagon and Hydra to be 'overgrown fish' claiming to be gods.
  • Good Parents: Tries his damned best to be this to Hardestadt, trying to make up to him again
  • Heel–Face Turn: The massive damage caused by the war, Aleviel's sacrifice, and his own son cutting him off for centuries really rattled him, and by the point of Lonesome Arkham, while he's hardly humble and still a danger to those who oppose him, he's significantly mellowed out from his days as the would-be conqueror of Hell and is now fighting in earnest to save the world from Nyarlathotep.
  • Hidden Heart of Gold: Under his haughtiness and arrogance, he can be extremely kind and respectful.
  • I've Come Too Far: His refusal to stop the war in heaven, even after seeing his beloved brother Michael opposing him? To stop would mean all of his fallen followers and dead opponents would have died in vain.
  • Kill It with Fire: His general fighting style seems to be summoning tons of fire and incinerating anything in sight with it.
  • Klingon Promotion: He ascended to the throne of High King of Hell by killing Azazel Baal.
  • Leitmotif: In his introductory chapter in Nights in Lonesome Arkham, Lucifer is given "Sympathy for the Devil" by The Rolling Stones.
  • Louis Cypher: Assumes the identity of "Nicholas Morgen" to get his son's sentient sword out of the hands of a petty murderer and thief, letting the man get a glimpse into his true form as incentive to turn his course in life.
  • Master of All: Lucifer is the most powerful devil and a complete master of every discipline imaginable, being an excellent sorcerer and swordsman as well.
  • My Greatest Failure: Could not bring himself to reach out to Hardestadt properly after his mother's death, something he is secretly deeply ashamed of.
  • Nerves of Steel: Nothing rattles him. Not even being thrown into an Old One cage or his own apparently impending demise. Lucifer takes it all in stride without panicking or changing his expression.
  • Noble Demon: Even during the war between Heaven and Hell, Lucifer was still impeccably polite and honest with noble intentions. At his core, Lucifer's barely evil at all; he detests killing for its own sake, never lies or twists his word, treats his son's human and vampire friends as full equals at one small prompt from Hardestadt, and even goes out of his way to convince a conniving, small-time gangster using his son's sword to kill people to change his lot in life — albeit by terrifying him into doing so.
  • Older Than They Look: Has been alive since pretty much the dawn of time and is still a gorgeous, young-looking man. Emma even says he resembles Hardestadt's "hot older brother" more than his father.
  • Papa Wolf: While he's aloof, he loves his kids and Nyarlathotep finally incurs his utter wrath when he insults Hardestadt.
Nyarlathotep: He's just like both his parents. A failure to the end.
Lucifer: Don't you ever mock my son.
  • Pride: He is Lucifer, after all, and his haughtiness is clearly manifest despite him otherwise being a decent guy. Fittingly enough, he's able to inspire pride in positive contexts, as well, convincing Belial to be proud of her true self in A Matter of Pride and finally allowing her to stop hating herself.
Emmma: What's [Lucifer] like?
Hardestadt: Same as he's ever been. A hands-off parent, arrogant, too sure of himself, manipulative, proud — you wouldn't believe the "proud" part.
Emma: Pretty sure some of those were synonyms, Stadt.
Hardestadt: You'd be amazed how he can make them different.
  • Parental Neglect: Pretty hands off as a parent to say the very least. Also a victim of this from his own Father.
  • Person of Mass Destruction: Freely admits he could destroy the earth with no effort. When he fights Nyarlathotep, their fight could put the entire universe at risk just from the backlash.
  • Really Gets Around: Has a lot of kids, the vast majority by different mothers. Lust is one of those sins after all.
  • Red Baron: 'The Morning Star.'
  • Satan Is Good: Downplayed. Lucifer's haughty, arrogant, distant from his son, and was still responsible for the angelic war that led to thousands of angels dying needless deaths and the Fall that took place afterwards — but at his absolute worst, Lucifer is magnificently Affably Evil and beyond that genuinely likes both his fellow angels and humanity themselves as beyond just pieces to manipulate, showing care for Belial and convincing her to take pride in her true self and offering to give Aleviel a chance to exist beyond the garden she's been marooned in for so long. In the present day, Lucifer's essentially a decent guy who wants to reconnect with Hardestadt and plays a direct role in saving all creation from Nyarlathotep.
  • Smug Super: Just as arrogant as you'd think, but he can really, really, really back it up.
  • Tall, Dark, and Handsome: Tall, dark haired and incredibly handsome
  • Tall, Dark, and Snarky: His good looks are matched by his dry wit, much like his son's own.
  • Time Abyss: He considers ten-thousand years to be quite insignificant in the grand scheme of his life.
  • Tranquil Fury: When he's well and truly furious, it manifests as him being really, really calm.
  • The Unfettered: Lucifer stopped at nothing to overthrow heaven and restore answers to Creation caused by god's disappearance.
  • Universally Beloved Leader: To the Devils, Lucifer is beloved. They're not simply an army, they're a family. Satannus puts it best: they're not slaves or servants. They follow Lucifer because they love him.
  • Villain Protagonist: Of The Fall. Lucifer's principled and well-intentioned, but there's no denying he's still leading a full-out war against Heaven that costs the lives of thousands — many of whom he kills himself — to install himself as Heaven's ruler, even spitefully mocking his brother Michael by ordering him to "obey" as he's always done.
  • Well-Intentioned Extremist: The reason for his rebellion? "To return order to this fractured chaos" with God gone.
  • World's Strongest Man: Insinuates he's stronger than every demon in hell put together and with Aleviel dead, he's the strongest character in the setting except for Michael and Nyarlathotep at their best before you get to God or the Outer Gods.

    Aleviel

Aleviel

Appears in: Nights In Lonesome Arkham | A Conspiracy of Serpents | Give Us Forever

"I see the pain of everyone who has lived. Everyone who lives now across so many worlds. I see the pain inside you. The pain of being abandoned. The hatred at being suborned by something you do not understand. I see it and I understand it.
https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/aleviel.jpg

One of the strongest and most noble angels in existence, and Hardestadt's mother.

  • Abusive Parents: Her brutal testing of Hardestadt, putting him through intense manipulation and agony, land her squarely in this.
  • Action Mom: The most devastatingly powerful angel who ever lived, implied to be the strongest being in all Creation or even existence, and a loving mother to boot.
  • All-Loving Hero: Aleviel differed from Lucifer and his amoral Sins in that she couldn't bring herself to pointlessly destroy so many lives even in her rebellion. She's so benevolent she even offers Nyarlathotep a chance at a better life, one he almost seems to consider taking. However, she fully acknowledges the paradox in that allowing the war to drag on further only leads to even worse bloodshed. Even worse, all of Aleviel's compassion and guilt for ruthless actions do not make her hesitate in them. Ever.
  • Always Someone Better: To Lucifer and Nyarlathotep both.
  • Ambiguous Situation: Was that really Aleviel Nyarlathotep saw in his last moments, or was he hallucinating?
  • Back from the Dead: She returns to life at the end of Nights in Lonesome Arkham.
  • Big Bad: It is revealed she is the main villain of Give Us Forever after Baba Yaga makes her exit, working alongside Malachor Archayus.
  • Big Good: For the setting as a whole, with God serving as a Greater-Scope Paragon. Aleviel is the greatest source of inspiration in Hardestadt's life, and even though she's long gone, her influence still continues to have an effect on everyone she met, with Hardestadt seeking to pursue the "world without tears" she sought to create.
  • Broken Ace: She's the most powerful angel, even the most powerful being in existence, the paragon and great revolutionary, who is shattered by all the deaths she's caused. In A Conspiracy of Serpents she refuses to get involved with any conflict under the belief all she does is make them worse and hurt the ones she cares for most.
  • Broken Pedestal: She loved God dearly as his daughter. Then she was locked in the Garden for endless eons, and her love slowly turned to hatred and anger. She also serves as this to Nyarlathotep who once idolized her....and eventually to Hardestadt himself after Give Us Forever, which breaks his idealized view of his mother.
  • Brother–Sister Incest: Her one known romantic relationship was Lucifer, who is technically her brother. Not that Angels view it that way.
  • Byronic Hero: Aleviel is tormented by her failures and sins despite her good intentions and being unable to stop the war she began. Even in modern day, Aleviel's inability to reconcile good intent with terrible deed leads to her steady estrangement from all around her as she's forced to use them in increasingly ruthless ways.
  • The Chessmaster" Aleviel is the main villain of Give Us Forever and reveals herself to be a brilliant, calculating manipulator who entraps everyone in her schemes.
  • Curbstomp Battle: Face her one on one and this is the only fight you get. She has crushed both Nyarlathotep and Apophis without any effort to date.
  • Deceased Parents Are the Best: Hardestadt thinks much higher of Aleviel than he does Lucifer. She's also disappeared for centuries, seemingly erased from existence.
  • Declaration of Protection: She vowed when Hardestadt was born to always, always protect him. It makes it all the more heartbreaking she broke her promise many times.
  • Dissonant Serenity: Was known to fight with a gentle, relaxed smile in contrast to the blood she shed.
  • Driven to Suicide: At the climax of Give Us Forever, she attempts to throw herself into nonexistence in atonement for all she's done.
  • The Fettered: Everything she does is a result of the limits that, consciously or unconsciously, she has placed on herself.
  • Forced to Watch: Aleviel forces Hardestadt to watch the death of Erin in order to enrage him enough to draw out the power she needs to save Ali from closing out Amatsu-Mikaboshi. Exact Words in play means Erin technically isn't hurt, but she ensures Dasrian makes it seem all too real.
  • Good Parents: As busy as she was, she adored her son and made every effort to be a good parent to him. Zigzagged in Give Us Forever. For all her love for Hardestadt, she puts him through agony, manipulating and deceiving him through serious pain so she can save the life of her daughter Alineia.
  • Heroic Sacrifice: Seemingly gave her life to save her son from prosecution at the hands of the other angels.
  • I Did What I Had to Do: Her justification for the extreme emotional and physical torture she put her son through and all her shady plots with Baba Yaga and Malachor were to save her daughter's life as well as the entire Teraverse. However, Hardestadt, Lucifer and others point out that she didn't have to do any of that, and by assuming that she knew better than everyone else and that her plan alone was the only one that could work, she ends up destroying her relationships with her loved ones.
  • In Their Own Image: Aleviel attempts to remake the entire Teraverse in Give Us Forever—or so it seems. This is her ruse to save it and save her daughter Alineia from dying in the process.
  • Interrupted Suicide: Aleviel attempts to cast herself into oblivion in repentance for everything she's put Hardestadt through at the end of Give Us Forever. Hardestat doesn't let her.
  • Ironic Echo: Whether it's really her or not, Aleviel is the one to deliver this to Nyarlathotep just before he's destroyed by Azathoth, turning his favored words against him: "all I have to offer you is madness. Madness, and the void's wild vengeance. The only gifts the presumptuous has earned."
  • Karma Houdini: Subverted. Though her plan to remake the Teraverse is a ruse and she was never intent on killing anyone in her plots in Give Us Forever—in fact, her plan was to save the Teraverse—the emotional pain is no less real, and Aleviel attempts to repent by committing suicide. Hardestadt doesn't let her, and she technically walks off scot-free, she's left alone having torn apart her relationships with her family, with only her regrets to keep her company.
  • Kick the Dog: Simulated or not, tricking her son into thinking his wife was just murdered in front of him is probably the lowest Aleviel ever gets.
  • Knight Templar Parent: Aleviel is ruthlessly dedicated to protecting her daughter Alineia, to the point of lying to everyone and manipulating everyone around her, even her own son.
  • Lady of War: Impossibly beautiful, relaxed, elegant and the strongest warrior in the history of creation who tore apart all of Nyarlathotep's offenses while never losing a peaceful expression and gentle smile.
  • Manipulative Bastard: Aleviel's amazingly good at playing with other people's heartstrings to get what she wants. Her entire plot in Give Us Forever is putting Hardestadt and his allies through the emotional wringer, all for the purpose of drawing up Hardestadt's power in her plan to save the Teraverse.
  • Mama Bear: She would fight to any length to protect her son. She would also do anything to protect her daughter, even if it put said son through the worst pain imaginable.
  • The Man Behind the Man: She's revealed as the one manipulating events in Give us Forever, working alongside the ruthless demon Malachor.
  • Master of All: The strongest angel and a master of every form of magic as well as every fighting discipline.
  • Missing Mom: In the most literal sense possible. Aleviel isn't dead, per se, but she's been missing from creation for thousand of years.
  • My God, What Have I Done?: She is stricken with guilt and grief for the consequences of her rebellion and refuses to get involved in new crises because she feels she only makes things worse. Likewise at the end of Give Us Forever, she feels nothing but regret for all her actions.
  • My Greatest Failure: Her war ended up killing trillions, and all for nothing.
  • The Paragon Always Rebels: The most beautiful, noble and kindest of the angels, and the first ever made by God. She ends up rebelling and being an even greater threat to heaven than Lucifer.
  • Parental Neglect: Suffered eons of this' when God seemingly abandoned her in the Garden to languish (in truth having been tired out to near nonexistence in keeping the Outer Gods out of creation). This caused her to eventually rebel alongside the other angels.
  • Parents as People: She's much less perfect than Hardestadt remembers her as. Aleviel makes many mistakes and eventually has to choose between breaking her elder child's heart or letting her younger child die.
  • Pregnant Badass: Aleviel curb-stomps Nyarlathotep while she's pregnant with Hardestadt, earning the Outer God's fear and hatred. It is later revealed she was pregnant as well during the final battle in her rebellion, so early not even she knew of it.
  • Pyrrhic Victory: In Burden of Tomorrow she succeeds in saving the Terraverse and her daughter's life, however, the extreme methods she undertook to do so all but destroys her relationships with everyone close to her, especially because, as they point out, she had no right assuming her plan was the only way to accomplish her goals.
  • Single-Target Sexuality: For eons, the only person who interested her was Lucifer. She finally acknowledges her feelings for Nephera at the end of Conspiracy of Serpents.
  • Time Abyss: Like most of the first angels, she's ancient. And she's the oldest angel.
  • Unwitting Instigator of Doom: As selfless as it was of her to offer even the Crawling Chaos mercy in the world she sought to create, it also ended up as one of her greatest mistakes. Aleviel's fall from grace ended up causing Nyarlathotep to permanently plunge over the Despair Event Horizon and any hope of validating his own existence in a way that didn't involve destroying millions — and, out of sheer, vengeful spite to her, Nyarlathotep decided to embrace his nature and destroy the very world she sought to protect.
  • Well-Intentioned Extremist: The goal of her rebellion was to create a better world, even if she killed many, many people to do it. In Give Us Forever, she orchestrates a complex plot to save the Teraverse under the guise of "remaking" it, putting her son through emotional anguish to draw his latent power up and use it to save Ali as she pushes out Amatsu-Mikaboshi, an act that would otherwise kill her.
  • Willfully Weak: She suppressed most of her power to keep from just wiping heaven out during the great war. Nyarlathotep implies she would've destroyed heaven if she had been able to force herself to do it, but 'faltered' at the end.
  • World's Strongest Man: Easily the strongest character in the setting outside of God and Azathoth themselves, well beyond even Lucifer and Nyarlathotep. Even the trace remnants of her power serve as powerful macguffins Nyarlathotep seeks to take in order to break the lock on creation so he can devour the other Outer Gods.

    Queen Karai Gehenna

Queen Karai Gehenna

"Paradise can so easily become a hollow, lost thing, Erin. Do not lose sight of reality."

A demon and the former Queen of Hell, struck down by a spell of sleeping that sent her into the Dreamlands for centuries, where she has become the archmage of Ulthar.

  • Ambiguously Brown: Noticeably darker skinned than Erin, but no human ethnicity is ascribed to her.
  • The Archmage: In the Dreamlands, she's become the Archmage of the town of Ulthar, and she can back it up with a lot of power.
  • Authority Equals Asskicking: As with all of Hell's nobility. Karai proves a couple-thousand years in the Dreamlands hasn't dulled her at all when some upstart men of Leng try and attack her and Erin.
  • Big Damn Kiss: Draws Azmodan into one at the start of the epilogue before she fades, the first in thousands of years.
  • Big Damn Reunion: Another with Azmodan when she awakens for the first time in thousands of years.
  • Clingy Jealous Girl: Averted. As a demon, Karai is very open-minded and when Azmodan is having trouble sleeping, she offhandedly mentions if he needs a few nights with another lover, she's absolutely fine.
  • Deep Sleep: Induced on her, and she's been in it for thousands of years, taking up residence in Ulthar for that time in the Dreamlands. The revelation of Nyarlathotep threatening Hell convinces her to finally act to break it.
  • Eternal Love: She and Azmodan have been together a long, long time, hundreds and thousands of years in fact.
  • Fire-Forged Friends: She and Erin bond immensely on their journey together through the Dreamlands.
  • Happily Married: It doesn't seem they've made a formal ceremony of it,but by demon standards Az and Karai are essentially a married couple, and are a very supportive and loving one.
  • Healing Hands: Possesses these. Uses them to heal Erin in the Dreamlands.
  • The High Queen: A beautiful, powerful demon who would do anything to protect the hell she rules.
  • I Warned You: She gives the men of Leng ample time to get out of the way in the Dreamlands. Their smugness costs most of them their lives.
  • Kindhearted Cat Lover: Something of a different take, but Erin notes she's quite good with the cats of Ulthar — which she's lived among for thousands of years now — and she's quick to offer her services to Erin once she realizes Nyarlathotep threatens all existence.
  • Lightning Bruiser: Take away her magic? She moves incredibly fast and hits hard enough to kill a grown man in a single blow.
  • Master Swordsman: Not just a skilled mage, but a lightning-fast fighter with a scimitar too.
  • Not So Stoic: She has a playful, mischievous side to her she she loves showing.
  • Reluctant Ruler: Served as this for a time in Hell, after Aleviel's sacrifice and in Lucifer's absence, admitting she wasn't anywhere near up to their level but persevered in the role regardless.
  • She Is the King: Originally, Karai held the title of King alongside the other Nine. After a mass abdication, she restyled herself as High Queen.

    Paimon

King Paimon

"If a reputation such as mine could be so easily sundered by talking to you, I would deserve the fall."

A King of hell and the oldest demon on the Council. Paimon is one of the more reasonable members of the demon leadership, and is involved with Asmodeus of Lust in modern day.

  • Authority Equals Asskicking: It's noted most demons wouldn't dare to enter into a rival's seat of power alone. Most demons aren't Paimon.
  • Beware the Nice Ones: Paimon is one of the kindest demons in hell, but it's very wise not to anger him. Even Andras quails when Paimon shows some of his fire.
  • Eternal Love: He and Asmodeus, by modern day, have been lovers for a very long time and clearly care deeply for one another.
  • Hair of Gold, Heart of Gold: Paimon is blond and for a demon, he's an undeniably swell guy without much of a mean bone in his body.
  • Nice Guy: For a demon, Paimon is surprisingly kind and gentle, treating those about him with total respect and courtesy.
  • Official Couple: He and Asmodeus end up as an item.
  • The Older Immortal: Many demons are ancient, but Paimon is older still. He's hinted to be one of the first demons and was old when even Azazel was a child.
  • Parental Substitute: In his conversation with King Shax Focalor, Paimon and Shax reminisce over how Paimon served as a caring father-figure to an abused young Shax in unknown circumstances.
  • Person of Mass Destruction: Paimon can wield tons of power when he's annoyed enough to do so.
  • Reasonable Authority Figure: Paimon is one of the most even minded and reasonable of the Kings of hell.
  • Time Abyss: Paimon is ancient, the oldest living demon in hell except for Lilith.

    Andras Eligor

King Andras Eligor

Appears in: Reign in Hell | Stories Never Told

"I shall feel the fear of countless across Creation. A feast to last for all eternity!"

A King of hell and one of Azazel's inner circle. Unlike the charming Shax, Andras is a humorless, vicious monster who relishes the fear of others.

  • Achilles' Heel: Overcome Andras's fear power and he's far less effective.
  • Authority Equals Asskicking: Andras is easily one of the strongest members of the demon council.
  • Cain and Abel: He murdered his brothers to seize control of House Eligor.
  • Co-Dragons: He and Shax are Azazel's right and left hands on the council, with Andras often being his top enforcer.
  • Creepy Long Fingers: Much attention is drawn to his long, spidery fingers.
  • Dark Is Evil: Everything about Andras is dark, and he's one of the most evil demons ever featured in the series.
  • Eerie Pale-Skinned Brunette: He's deathly pale with dark hair, almost corpse-like.
  • Empty Eyes: His eyes are described as pale and empty.
  • Facial Horror: After he's burnt by Lucifer's flames, the epilogue sees his face as a hideous patchwork of scar and burns, with even the bone showing.
  • Mind Rape: Andras's modus operandi is to consume the minds of his prey with fear and terror, feeding off of it.
  • Manipulative Bastard: Andras opts to use his fear to manipulate entire Circles of hell.
  • Names to Run Away from Really Fast: 'The Gravecaller.'
  • No-Sell: Astaroth is able to shrug off the Gravecaller ability thanks to his own innate melancholy rendering it defunct, and Lucifer later overcomes it as well.
  • Obviously Evil: Pale eyes, stringy long hair and the least friendly guy on the planet. Any shock he's evil?
  • Psychic Powers: Andras's 'Gravecaller' is a psychic inducement to drag one's true terrors out before them.
  • Sadist: Andras is savagely addicted to the mental agony of others and relishes causing it.
  • Slasher Smile: Often emotionless, Andras allows some savagely wicked grins with sharp teeth when he's on top.
  • Visible Silence: His dark looks say more than words ever could.
  • Would Hurt a Child: He keeps little Lady Vepar, a little girl, in an eternal nightmares for eons, torturing her constantly with endless terror and mental torture
  • Yes-Man: Andras rarely, if ever contradicts Azazel on the council.
  • Your Mind Makes It Real: The terrors the Gravecaller induces become quite real if the mind believes it.

    Shax Focalor

King Shax Focalor

Appears in: Reign in Hell | Stories Never Told

"Once our paths are set, all that remains is to walk them until the end."

A King of hell and one of Azazel's inner circle. Shax is a charming, pleasant demon, who is ruthless in defense of what is his.

  • Achilles' Heel: Shax's one weakness? His children, which Mammon exploits to defeat him.
  • Affably Evil: He's a friendly guy all things considered. He will have someone killed without a thought, but none of his affability is fake.
  • Authority Equals Asskicking: Like most Kings, Shax is an exceptional warrior.
  • Crippling Castration: His family castrated him for failing to live up to the Focalor legacy, physically and magically.
  • Dark and Troubled Past: A terrified little boy, abused and tortured by his family, even castrated and exiled to die...he was found by Azazel and raised to become the nightmarish enforcer he is when Reign in Hell begins.
  • Do Not Go Gentle: When defeated, Shax decides to go down swinging.
  • Freudian Excuse: His horrific treatment by his family and Azazel rescuing him led him to be eternally loyal to Azazel.
  • Graceful Loser: He dies giving his family's seat to Mammon and his title to Balizel, wishing them fond farewells.
  • Manipulative Bastard: Shax is a master player of the Grand Dance, able to manipulate his enemies beautifully.
  • Morality Pet: He truly loves the children he takes it, even if it does little to curb his darker deeds.
  • Odd Friendship: he maintains a friendly relationship with Paimon, who was one of the few to ever be truly kind to him.
  • Out-Gambitted: Mammon threatening his children makes him lose all composure and fall into her trap. He opts to go out swinging.
  • Parental Substitute: Paimon is the truest thing to a father he ever had. he is also one to the orphaned demon children he adopts.
  • Reasonable Authority Figure: Subverted. Shax plays at this, but he's ruthless, cold and manipulative, willing to sacrifice or erase entire Houses if his role demands it.
  • Token Good Teammate: Downplayed. He's the least evil between Azazel, Andras, Morviak and himself, but he's still far from a good person and is ruthless in erasing those against Azazel.
  • Worthy Opponent: He truly respects Mammon as the two of them spar together.

    Morviak

Morviak

Appears in: Reign in Hell | Stories Never Told

"MALEBOLGE! WINS! AGAIN!"
https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/morviak.png
The Lord of the Eighth Circle of Hell, the Malebolge at the time of the Fall. Morviak is a nigh peerless warrior and a savage beast who functions as one of Azazel's most feared warriors.

  • Authority Equals Asskicking: The leader of the Malebolge is the strongest warrior there, and Morviak is a particularly impressive example.
  • Barbarian Longhair: He has long, braided hair to emphasize his savage nature.
  • Berserk Button: Morviak is a commoner by origin and reminding him he has no noble House is a good way to get on his bad side.
  • Blood Knight: Morviak is the head of the Malebolge, which is full of these, and few seem to enjoy a good battle as much as he does.
  • The Brute: A savage beast of a demon who gets by on sheer power.
  • Childhood Friends: He's one of Azazel's childhood group along with Shax and Andras.
  • Epic Flail: His weapon is a giant flail with a curved blade at one end, a spiked ball on the other.
  • Fangs Are Evil: Morviak sharpens his teeth rather intimidatingly and he's one of the most evil people in Reign in Hell.
  • Good Scars, Evil Scars: His face is heavily scarred, giving him a very dangerous and wicked look.
  • Klingon Promotion: The way he got the title? Killed the previous ruler of the Malebolge, which is typically how one climbs the ladder in the Eighth Circle.
  • Large and in Charge: He's massive, the biggest demon seen yet, and the Lord of the Malebolge.
  • Large Ham: He's introducing screaming the name of the Malebolge, before roaring "MALEBOLGE! WINS! AGAIN!"
  • Leave No Survivors: Morviak tends to leave absolutely nothing left alive in his wake if he's not ordered very specifically to do so.
  • Made of Iron: Even for a demon, Morvaik is durable, taking insane blow after blow without flinching.
  • No-Sell: With what a bloodthirsty nut he is, he ensures his flail is enchanted to absorb magic, forcing his enemy to face him with sheer force of arms.
  • Person of Mass Destruction: Again, even for a demon, Morviak can deal widespread death with his powers, swings of his flail absolutely devastating lands all over.
  • Rasputinian Death: Gremory and Malachor incredible amounts of damage to him, with Morviak soaking it up all the way through until Malachor finally disintegrates him.
  • Screaming Warrior: He has a tendency to howl and roar a lot in the fray.
  • Slasher Smile: He's described as having a massive grin filled with very sharp teeth to emphasize his love of slaughter.
  • Sorting Algorithm of Evil: As powerful and deadly as he is, even he is intimidated by Azazel.

The Seven Sins

    Belial

Belial

Appears in: A Matter of Pride | The Fall (2018) | The Kiss of Wrath | A Conspiracy of Serpents | Give Us Forever | Reign in Hell

I see who I am! I see myself! And I. Am. PROUD!"
https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/belial_7_1.jpg

An angel and transgender woman who became a powerful Devil and the Sin of Pride. One of Lucifer's first and most utterly loyal followers. The main character of A Matter Of Pride.

  • Beautiful All Along: She was never hideous, but despised her male body and could not understand why. After accepting her true nature, she sees herself as beautiful, inside and out.
  • Because You Were Nice to Me: Lucifer's kindness towards her and his aid in accepting her true self earned Belial's eternal undying loyalty.
  • Brother–Sister Incest: As part of the first angel generation, she and Lucifer are technically siblings. She expresses no reservation about sleeping with him before the Fall and states she has been his lover and friend ever since.
  • Cool Aunt: She's referenced by Lucifer's kids as a very loving and proud aunt to them, and in her closing narration, she mentions how much she's loved and protected each and every one of Lucifer's children.
  • Defector from Decadence: She despised the stifling 'perfection' from heaven and finds the freedom of her Devilry far more fulfilling.
  • Do Not Call Me "Paul": She hated the name Belial, which means 'worthless.' After meeting Lucifer, she learned to take pride in it instead, making it so it referred to her as one whose value was beyond naming.
  • The Dragon: As the Sin of Pride, she is implied to be Lucifer's right-hand among the Devils and the seven sins.
  • Fallen Angel: Was one of those to Fall during Lucifer's great rebellion.
  • Hopeless Suitor: She dearly loves Lucifer, but is aware that even if the she's his friend and lover, his heart truly belongs to Aleviel and Nephera Vallikan. While she believes she might get somewhere if she were to truly open her heart and beg for him to remain with her, she has to admit she's too prideful for it.
  • Insult Backfire: One of her 'brothers,' Ezekial declares her arrogant for embracing her name of 'Belial' and her nature as a woman. Her only response is to retort "Pride."
  • Mistreatment-Induced Betrayal: Was treated horribly and contemptuously by other angels for her name 'Belial', meaning 'worthless.' This apparently factored into her decision to leave Heaven for Lucifer's legion.
  • Pride: Her sin. In a twist, it's far less evil than expected, as it's her learning to take pride in herself.
  • Rage Against the Heavens: Repeatedly against her absentee Father for creating her with a body she was never comfortable in, without truly knowing why.
  • Rose-Haired Sweetie: She's described as having 'rose-colored' hair and is rather benevolent and pleasant as far as devils go, with her urging others to accept pride in who they are.
  • The Tease: She's well aware Asmodeus, Sin of Lust wants her badly regardless of her gender, but she prefers to play around with him.
  • Undying Loyalty: To Lucifer. She is one of his first followers and one of the most utterly loyal for helping her realize her true self.
  • Well-Intentioned Extremist: She was a participant in Lucifer's rebellion that killed many on both sides, but her ultimate goal is fixing the errors with the world her absentee Father made.
  • Winged Humanoid: She appears humanoid and like most angels, has white wings at the story's opening.

    Satannus

Satannus

Appears in: A Matter of Pride | The Fall (2018) | The Kiss of Wrath | A Conspiracy of Serpents | Reign in Hell

"Every day I remind myself to remain calm. Every single day I hold my wrath in check."
https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/satannus_6.jpg

The Devil sin of Wrath, one of Lucifer's seven Sins, and the main protagonist in The Kiss of Wrath.

  • All for Nothing: Satannus is torn by the revelation that her Father is dead. As she says, if God was never there to oppose, "what am I but another monster?"
  • Amazonian Beauty: Satannus is gorgeous, but wild and strong looking.
  • Authority Equals Asskicking: The greatest military commander in Hell's ranks sans Lucifer himself, and easily one of the strongest.
  • Barbarian Long Hair: She has long, fiery red hair, emphasizing her wild nature.
  • Berserk Button: Being forced to ignore hearing her safeword when she was forced to brutalize Daemon to save him from Karadas enrages her, far more than the other indignation of what Karadas does to her.
  • Blessed with Suck: Her power comes from her wrath and makes her one of the most dangerous warriors in hell. It's also always with her and every single day is a constant fight not to lose herself to her fury.
  • Bloodbath Villain Origin: She's one of the Sins, so she's A Lighter Shade of Black, but Satannus' fall begun with her turning on her brethren for their traitorous actions and she eagerly followed Lucifer from that moment on.
  • Blood Knight: Satannus loves a good fight, and she's seen particularly hungry for fighting during the war on Heaven in The Fall.
  • Brother–Sister Incest: As is particular with most devils. Not only with Lucifer, but she regularly sleeps with her fellow female Sins and devils of both genders.
  • Bruiser with a Soft Center: Satannus is violent and loves fighting, but she has a deep love for her family under it and a lot of good points to her.
  • The Chessmaster: Plays Karadas Baal like a finely-tuned guitar when he thinks he's in control of the conspiracy underlining The Kiss of Wrath.
  • Co-Dragons: While the Seven Sins have claims to this as one, she and Belial are the closest, serving as his right and left hands during the Fall.
  • Cool Aunt: It takes a while, but she becomes this to Daemon after she makes him her Soul-Bound, though as per usual for Devils and Soul-Bounds, the two are physically involved during his tutelage.
  • Curtains Match the Windows: Red eyes and fiery red hair.
  • Dark Action Girl: Satannus is the most action oriented of the Devils and has the skills to prove it.
  • Deadpan Snarker: She's got one hell of a dry wit to her as well.
  • Defiant to the End: To the last second of the fight, she refuses to knuckle down to Apophis.
  • Do Not Go Gentle: She opts to go down swinging against Apophis.
  • Drill Sergeant Nasty: She does not believe in taking it easy with her students, putting them through grueling exercises and pushing them to their limits.
  • Dying Moment of Awesome: Satannus fights through death itself to return her soul to her body and launches a brutal, fast-paced attack on Apophis that nearly kills the King of Serpents himself before her body gives out.
  • Eyepatch of Power: She's a total badass, and is missing an eye, which she covers with a red patch.
  • Fallen Angel: Like all devils, she's a former angel.
  • Fiery Redhead: She's wild, hot-blooded and has red hair.
  • Genius Bruiser: Satannus is one of the most capable and deadly in terms of combative ability among the Devils, and she's also one of the smartest too.
  • Hair-Trigger Temper: She's Wrath of the Seven Sins, and it doesn't take much to get her off.
  • Heroic Sacrifice: Satannus takes a stand against an empowered Apophis, knowing full well it will mean her life.
  • Heroic Willpower: Satannus has will powerful enough to will her soul back into her body after death, making Apophis realize just how strong she truly is.
  • Hidden Depths: Not only her kindness, but while she's primarily a warrior, Satannus is an incredibly skilled manipulator. While she confesses her dislike with the political game of the demons known as the Grand Dance, Satannus remarks she can "throw together a few steps" when she puts her mind to it.
  • Hot-Blooded: Unlike most of the reserved Sins, Satannus is wild and tends to shout a lot.
  • I Don't Want to Die: She has a sad moment before Apophis when she realizes she's terrified of dying and having her soul devoured, but pushes on to engage the serpent anyways.
  • Implacable Woman: Satannus will not stay down and goes through entire armies on her own.
  • It's Personal: When the King of Serpents kills two devils, Satannus takes it very personally.
  • Jerk with a Heart of Gold: Satannus is not a friendly person, but she can be quite kind to those she cares about. It does take a while to get there, though.
  • The Last Dance: Against Apophis, when she gets back up, knowing she goes down, she tells him before she expires "I'm gonna break you to pieces."
  • Made of Iron: It's damn near impossible to even damage her.
  • Master Swordsman: She taught Daemon, AKA Hardestadt how to fight and it's clear why she's the master.
  • Mentor Occupational Hazard: She sacrifices her life against Apophis and dies in her student's arms, though her spirit still assists him for the final battle with the King of Serpents.
  • Mistreatment-Induced Betrayal: Being used and manipulated by her angelic superiors shattered her loyalty to heaven and drove her to Lucifer's rebellion.
  • The Mole: To Karadas Baal's conspiracy. Satannus derails the entire thing from the inside while maintaining a convincing guise — even brutally beating Daemon in front of Karadas to "prove" her loyalty — and personally takes the honor of paying Karadas back alongside Daemon by cleaving Karadas to gibs.
  • My God, What Have I Done?: She is driven to despair by the revelation that her Father is gone. The notion she killed so many angels for nothing weighs heavily upon her.
  • My Greatest Failure: Satannus has never really gotten over the deaths of all of her soldiers that resulted in Lucifer noticing her wrath to begin with.
  • Nerves of Steel: Satannus holds herself together even at the worst point.
  • One-Woman Army: Satannus is the most powerful devil except for Lucifer and is nearly impossible to bring down in battle. She takes on a massive army of Apophis's servants and carves through them to get to the King of Serpents himself.
  • O.O.C. Is Serious Business: In Karadas's case, her lack of reaction at him demeaning her and demanding she personally kill her own student should have been a key tip-off that something was horribly, horribly wrong and he was nowhere near in control as he appeared. Sure enough, Satannus had been setting him up to go from 'insurgent' to 'test.'
  • Person of Mass Destruction: Her power is insane, and she's easily capable of shattering entire planets if she's a mind to.
  • Red Eyes, Take Warning: Her eyes are always red and she's very, very dangerous.
  • Safe Word: Like any devil or demon, she has a signal. Hers is 'Dawn.'
  • Scars Are Forever: She chooses to keep the scar Daemon gave her in their duel, in honor of her student.
  • Shrine to the Fallen: Satannus keeps a shrine to honor the fallen devils, as well as a smaller one to honor the angels who died in the incident where she became the Sin of Wrath.
  • Sir Swears-a-Lot: Satannus is probably the most foul-mouthed member of the cast.
  • Statuesque Stunner: Satannus is at least as tall as Mammon and jaw-droppingly gorgeous.
  • Stealth Mentor: Seemingly betrays Daemon to manipulate him into a final test, and so he'll fight her with no hesitation.
  • Stern Teacher: She's Hardestadt's mentor and remarkably stern and humorless with him during mentoring.
  • Survivor Guilt: Under her anger, Satannus possesses a lot of guilt over those she's lost.
  • Sympathy for the Devil: Satannus is shocked and horrified at Kasarian's past, offering him sympathy for the first time in centuries.
  • Took a Level in Cynic: Once a devoted member of the angelic warriors known as Powers, Satannus's faith was shattered when her superiors used her and her soldiers as bait. Only she survived.
  • Training from Hell: She subjects her students to this. Even attempting to become her student requires going through hell.
  • Tranquil Fury: Even when she's not actively enraged, Satannus is constantly fighting her own inner wrath underneath her surface and it's fairly easy to boil over.
  • Undying Loyalty: She is utterly loyal to hell, and to Lucifer especially, referring to him as the one who made the Devils a family.
  • Unstoppable Rage: When she's in a particularly bad mood. It starts with her losing herself to a red mist and slaughtering her own brethren once they cause her to lose her soldiers in a set-up mission.
  • Warrior Therapist: During their duel, she calls Kasarian out for sealing himself off, helping him through his long-buried issues to fight him at his true best.
  • When She Smiles: It takes a while to get there, but Satannus has a beautiful and warm smile to those she truly cares for.
  • Worthy Opponent: She and Kasarian treat one another this way, respecting each other's skills as they enjoy their duel.
  • You Are What You Hate: She despises those who kill without reason or justification, but eventually comes to realize her rebellion was not so justified after all.

    Mammon

Mammon

Appears in: A Matter of Pride | The Fall (2018) | Heart of Greed | The Kiss of Wrath | A Conspiracy of Serpents | Give Us Forever | Reign in Hell

"Demons never had anywhere to fall. I, on the other hand, fell a long way indeed.

The Devil sin of Greed, one Lucifer's seven Sins and a major player in Heart of Greed.

  • Affably Evil: She's evil, and relishes spreading the sin of Greed, but she's remarkably pleasant.
  • Benevolent Boss: She's extremely personable to those under her command, treating her minions like family. After all, she's always greedy for more.
  • Blue-and-Orange Morality: Played with. She simply cannot allow herself to accept Hardestadt doesn't really need billions of dollars every month and his attempts to refuse the money make her think he doesn't love her anymore.
  • Berserk Button: Mentioning God to her does irritate her. As does cheating in her establishments.
  • The Chessmaster: Reign in Hell reveals Mammon is a genius manipulator and ruthless operator, placing several Circles of Hell under her control against the equally talented King Shax. By the end, she manages to completely outplay him.
  • Cool Aunt: To Hardestadt, her 'darling little Daemon.' She has been regularly dumping fortunes to him every month so he has money on earth, casually moving billions to his account in a month.
  • Dark and Troubled Past: She and her twin Balizel once ran a world as a refuge for other beings, but when she grew too 'greedy' for new residents, angels found where she had been hiding demons and the world was wiped out in the resulting battle.
  • Disproportionate Retribution: Cheating at her casino can result in painful ends if you don't amuse her enough.
  • Due to the Dead: when Shax is mortally wounded, Mammon catches him as not to let him fall and die on his feet.
  • Even Evil Has Standards: Mammon killed a lot of angels and has no compunction disposing of troublesome individuals, but she values integrity and despises those who sell out their own.
  • Exact Words: Par for the course for a devil, but Mammon will happily fulfill the letter of an agreement while violating the spirit of it.
  • Friendly Enemy: For all of Shax's ruthlessness, Mammon's conversations with him are always pleasant and cheerful, even when they know they're fighting to the death.
  • Good Parents: She has one daughter from Lucifer, Avarisia. She absolutely treasures her, considering her the most valuable thing in all existence.
  • Half-Identical Twins: She and Balizel, Sin of Gluttony, are twins and look it immensely.
  • I Gave My Word: Mammon will always honor her promises. Though you have to watch out for the way she decides to do so when she considers the oath fulfilled.
  • Pet the Dog: Mammon is far more considerate and accepting of mortals than other devils, and has no problem accepting Erin as family. She also refuses to hurt Shax's adopted children, even if she'll use them to lure him into a trap.
  • Quality over Quantity: As the Sin of Greed, she values having a lot, but she has taste in what she collects.
  • Statuesque Stunner: She's quite tall and like most devils, impossibly gorgeous.
  • Sympathy for the Devil: She treats Shax with sympathy over his atrocious past.
  • Twin Banter: She and Balizel go back and forth like this quite a bit.
  • Twin Telepathy: She and Balizel have largely linked minds and share information easily.
  • Twin Threesome Fantasy: She and Balizel have occasionally shared a bed with Lucifer, albeit not being lovers themselves.
  • Uncle Pennybags: She dumps in billions of dollars to Hardestadt's bank accounts every year, something he is incredibly embarrassed over.
  • Undying Loyalty: Like all the Sins, she is utterly loyal to Lucifer and dearly loves him.
  • Worthy Opponent: She respects Shax and vice versa, even wishing they could have been friends in another place.

    Astaroth

Appears in: A Matter of Pride | The Fall (2018) | The Kiss of Wrath | A Conspiracy of Serpents | Give Us Forever | A Touch of Melancholy | Reign in Hell

"With so much darkness, so much pain walking down the road of Melancholy....at least know there are others who walk alongside you.

The Devil sin of Melacholy, one Lucifer's seven Sins and a major player in A Touch of Melancholy.

  • All the Other Reindeer: The only angel who knew only sadness in paradise made him quite isolated indeed.
  • Break the Haughty: The otherwise unflappably proud Belial snaps and flees in a fit of sobbing, panicked shame when she accidentally stabs her brother Astaroth.
  • Brutal Honesty: Astaroth, Sin of Melancholy, lays into Lucifer over all they've done, good and the bad. One of his roles within the Seven is to serve as the one to tell Lucifer the truth, no matter how unpleasant it is.
  • Dark Is Not Evil: Astaroth may be a devil, but he helps get Ophelia out of her depressed slump. In the broader universe, he is one of the most benevolent of hell's denizens.
  • Despair Event Horizon: An aversion to the rest: Unlike the other Sins, there was no inciting incident that forced Astaroth to give in to despair. He lived in Heaven growing steadily more depressed for no reason, and believed his unhappiness could only be a sin in paradise.
  • The Eeyore: Astaroth's Sin is Melancholy, and he is always quite depressed.
  • Fantastic Angst: Astaroth may be an angel, but his depression and sadness is played quite realistically.
  • He Will Not Cry, so I Cry for Him: He tends to weep for the sorrows of others.
  • I Never Told You My Name: Astaroth casually mentions Ophelia's name, who replies that she "never told you my-" before concluding that she must be dreaming.
  • Lonely Together: Astaroth's MO with those who are depressed and alone: reminding them that they are all walking the same roads.
  • No-Sell: Mental attacks that draw out one's pain and sorrow have absolutely no effect whatsoever on Astaroth.
  • Token Good Teammate: To Hell. While none of Hell's ranks are necessarily pitch-black, there's been comparatively no focus on the possible misdeeds of Astaroth compared to his brothers and sisters among the Sins, and his story of focus has him going out of his way to help a regular woman struggling with depression for no greater gain to himself.
  • Servile Snarker: He's as loyal to Lucifer as any other devil, but will get a few ribs in to his lord along the way.
  • Stealth Hi/Bye: Astaroth tends to show up and vanish when nobody is looking, without any sign he was there.
  • Undying Loyalty: For all his Servile Snarker tendencies, Astaroth is unquestionably devoted to Lucifer and to hell.
  • Wall Glower: His attitude when in public is to sulk and stare about.

House Vallikan

    Nephera Vallikan

Nephera Vallikan

Appears in: The Fall (2018) | The Kiss of Wrath | A Conspiracy of Serpents | Give Us Forever | Reign in Hell

"I understand the old blood has not yet cooled, my lords and ladies, but we must not allow Hell to be subsumed in old hatred."
https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/nephera.jpg

A demon and mother of Azmodan Vallikan. Ruler of House Vallikan, Nephera is also the mother to Hardestadt by demon convention, and a major player in Hell.

  • Almighty Mom: Politically, she's one of the strongest people in Hell, and even her sons are wary of angering her. Notably Hardestadt, who has faced down Outer Gods without losing his composure, quails when Nephera narrows her eyes at him.
  • Belligerent Sexual Tension: Given her deep and mutual attraction to Aleviel, a lot of their previous bickering comes off this way.
  • Benevolent Boss: Like her father, Nephera is caring and considerate to those working for her.
  • Berserk Button: One of the few things to set her to anger is someone implying she's any less Hardestadt's mother because their connection isn't biological. To Nephera, that's irrelevant.
  • Brutal Honesty: When she gets tired of Lucifer's moping, she lets him have it with blunt facts, ditto to Aleviel.
  • The Chessmaster: By reputation, Nephera is the greatest player of the Grand Dance in hell, enough to keep Karai's power base secure while Karai was in a coma for centuries.
  • Childhood Friend Romance: One of her truest loves is King Vinea Baal, who was raised in her household.
  • Clingy Jealous Girl: Heavily averted. Nephera practically encourages Lucifer to take other lovers. The only one she ever got jealous over was Aleviel.
  • Curtains Match the Windows: Nephera's eyes are the same shade as her hair: dark red.
  • Eternal Love: She and Lucifer met eons ago, with Nephera being the first demon he ever introduced himself to. The two have been in love almost that long.
  • Fantastic Racism: Downplayed. Nephera isn't fond of angels but she is far and away one of the most open minded and egalitarian demons in Reign in Hell, treating the Fallen refugees with respect and sympathy.
  • Good Bad Girl: Nephera is actually a very kind person for a demon, but she makes little bones about taking many lovers and has no sense of shame in herself.
  • Good Parents: Nephera adores her children. While she isn't Hardestadt's biological mother, by demon conventions, she's no less one than Aleviel, and loves him fiercely.
  • Kissing Cousins: She and her cousin Zagan were once lovers before Nephera truly tired of the relationship.
  • Manipulative Bitch: Portrayed in a positive light. Nephera is one of the smartest characters in the setting and manipulates situations without trying; a near requirement to get ahead in hell.
  • Morality Pet: Nephera can be ruthless and makes no bones about destroying enemies or rivals to elevate House Vallikan and herself in the process. Her love for her sons, however, is entirely genuine. Vinea Baal is also someone she looks upon with infinite love and fondness.
  • My God, What Have I Done?: In Reign in hell, Nephera is disturbed by the Court of the Broken, and the memory of killing two Baal spies after sleeping with them. She's not upset she killed them, just that bedding them under false pretenses might violated sacred consent after she considers how horrific the Court truly is.
  • Open-Minded Parent: By demon standards, she doesn't mind the adventures her kids have. She also doesn't mind them associating with vampires and is rather intrigued by Hardestadt taking human lovers where most demons would just be confused or scornful.
  • Really Gets Around: Nephera sleeps around quite a lot in her youth, which isn't so unusual for demons.
  • Red Baron: The 'Crimson Empress of Annihilation' isn't a title Hell gives for show.
  • The Rival: She and Aleviel were friendly rivals and Nephera is stunned to find how much she missed the angel.
  • Sadistic Choice: Kill your own father or lose the war against Azazel.
  • Self-Made Orphan: Nephera was forced to kill her own father for his betrayal and to seize control of House Vallikan.
  • Shameless Fanservice Girl: Satannus, in Kiss of Wrath, walks in on her having sex with Lucifer. Nephera continues with no issue and doesn't bother dressing for a bit after. Satannus even notes Nephera has no real need for shame whatsoever.
  • Socialite: The demon equivalent. Nephera loves socializing and navigating political battlefields.
  • Sole Survivor: Nephera is the only survivor of the children of Andromalia and Naivan Vallikan.
  • The Strategist: Not just a socialite, Nephera is a brilliant, genius strategist when it comes to politics.
  • Universally Beloved Leader: Nephera is beloved as the ruler of House Vallikan and that's just how she likes it.

    Azmodan Vallikan

Azmodan Vallikan

Appears in: Nights In Lonesome Arkham | The Kiss of Wrath | And to All a Good Night | A Conspiracy of Serpents | Give Us Forever

"Know your fate was sealed when you sought to place your unworthy hands upon my brother."

A demon-devil and the lord of the Eighth Layer of Hell. He is also Lucifer's eldest son and a powerful ally to his brother Hardestadt.

  • Archenemy: His rivalry and hatred with Malachor Archayus was the stuff of legends in hell.
  • Authority Equals Asskicking: He's not the strongest in Hell — that distinction goes to his father, Lucifer — but he is the lord of Malebolge, and he's got all the capability and strength to back it up and then some.
  • Big Brother Instinct: He cares deeply for Hardestadt and joins the quest to assist his brother without a second thought.
  • Deadpan Snarker: It runs in the family. Much like his father, mother and brother, Azmodan has a dry sense of humor and a sarcastic comment about most things without breaking expression.
  • Demon Lords And Arch Devils: He's one of the top demon lords around, ruling the Eighth Circle of Hell.
  • Did You Just Punch Out Cthulhu?: He's the one leading the battle against Ithaqua in Arkham, managing to slam the Great Old One back into its can after it was only recently released.
  • Fantastic Racism: Like most demons, he doesn't think much of vampires, at least at first. Karai notes he's actually more liberal towards humans than most demons, despite his dismissive attitude.
  • I Will Wait for You: Azmodan's been waiting and searching for hundreds of years for Karai to wake up. It pays off in the end.
  • Jerk with a Heart of Gold: He's particularly aloof and condescending to Hardestadt's Badass Normal allies, at first, but he's not a bad person and he even warms up to them after a while,
  • Kill It with Fire: Like father, like son, Azmodan favors fire magic in fighting.
  • Klingon Promotion: He became Lord of the Eighth, the Malebolge, by killing its previous ruler.
  • Lightning Bruiser: Azmodan zips circles around Ithaqua during their fight, refusing to let himself get hit even after Hardestadt ends up injured.
  • Light 'em Up: Azmodan's chief powers are light manipulation, hence 'Demon of the Light.'
  • The Lost Lenore: He has been looking for a way to revive Karai for centuries, with nothing but hope.
  • Odd Friendship: Eventually forms one with Emma (who herself is a vampire).
  • Red Baron: 'Demon of the Light' for his skill with manipulating light itself as a weapon.
  • Red Eyes, Take Warning: His eyes are naturally red, and while he is a decent sort for a demon, one would be wise not to push him too far.
  • Younger Than He Looks: He really is Hardestadt's "hot older brother" and he's eons of years old, but like the rest of his family, it doesn't show on appearances alone.

    Naivan Vallikan

Naivan Vallikan

Appears in: Reign in Hell

"What a shame you were not born a demon. No...what a shame you were born an angel."

The father of Nephera Vallikan and her predecessor in ruling House Vallikan. A brilliant strategist and tactician, and former consort of the heroic King Andromalia Sitri.

  • 0% Approval Rating: After His betrayal of Nephera and the angels, nobody in his household likes or trusts him anymore, which he realizes with sad finality.
  • Authority Equals Asskicking: Mentally speaking. Naivan is a powerful demon, but it's clear that his greatest power is his ability to outwit and outplay his opponents. In hell, this is a great form of power.
  • Benevolent Boss: Working for House Vallikan is like hitting the jackpot. Naivan is a kind and just ruler to those under him.
  • Berserk Button: His reaction to an angel setting foot in House Vallikan, plan or no, is sheer rage.
  • Demon Lords And Arch Devils: He's a powerful demon lord, the leader of House Vallikan.
  • Fantastic Racism: Naivan despises angels to insane levels. He can permit them to be used for schemes, but they are not equals to him. His loathing of them well exceeds most of his fellow demons.
  • Fiery Redhead: Downplayed. Naivan has red hair like his daughter, and he's usually subdued, but he erupts with fury when Lucifer sets foot in House Vallikan.
  • Good Parents: He adores Nephera, his only remaining daughter and the pride of his life.
  • Graceful Loser: When defeated by Nephera, he reacts with pride and joy.
  • Heel Realization: Realizing he's almost gotten his daughter killed and isolated himself from everyone who cares about him makes him realize how far he's fallen.
  • Hidden Heart of Gold: Naivan can be harsh and ruthless, but he's also a caring father and a good ruler to have.
  • Jumping Off the Slippery Slope: His hatred for angels makes him make horrible decisions, including allying with Azazel.
  • The Lost Lenore: Centuries later, he isn't over the death of his true love Andromalia Sitri.
  • Out-Gambitted: He's bested utterly by Nephera in her scheming and plotting by the end.
  • Outliving One's Offspring: Naivan and Andromalia had six children. All of them except Nephera are dead by the time Reign in Hell begins.
  • Parental Favoritism: Nephera is his favorite child in addition to being the sole survivor.
  • Pet the Dog: Even allied to the worst of the worst, he protects the refugees in his care.
  • So Proud of You: Nephera is the apple of his eye. Naivan deeply loves her, gives her full pride in her own schemes, and jokes his lovers complain all he does is brag about her to them. When Nephera kills him by the end, all he can do is express how proud he is of her.
  • Spanner in the Works: If not for his betrayal, Nephera's plans would've gone smoother and Ziminar and the other former Kings likely wouldn't have died.
  • Teeth-Clenched Teamwork: Naivan will work with angels for Nephera's scheme, but he won't like it one bit. When he betrays them and allies with Azazel, he's just as furious, despising Azazel just as much.
  • Universally Beloved Leader: At the beginning, everyone in the Vallikan lands loves and admires Naivan for his virtue and intellect.
  • Well-Intentioned Extremist: Everything he does by the end is to defend hell, as misguided as his actions are.

  • The Chains of Commanding: He often feels restricted by the responsibility of his throne, to say the least.
  • Childhood Friend Romance: He and Gremory have been friends since they were kids, and Zagan eventually realizes he's in love with her.
  • Cowardly Lion: He freezes up in a fight, but when he's needed, he steps up remarkably.
  • Inadequate Inheritor: Zagan considers himself less than a sufficient replacement to his grandfather, King Ziminar, who was known as an incredible warrior.
  • Eternal Love: He and Gremory were together for eons before their deaths.
  • Kissing Cousins: He and Nephera were lovers in their youth, despite being cousins on their mothers' sides.
  • Lady Killer In Love: Zagan is a bit of a nice guy casanova, but his true love as he realizes is his childhood friend and bodyguard Gremory.
  • Loveepiphany: Realizing Gremory is in love with him is what spurs him on to realize the feeling is mutual.
  • Nice Guy: Zagan is incredibly kind and personable for a demon, with no real regard for social barriers.
  • Posthumous Character: He's dead by the time of Girls on Film and has been for thousands of years.
  • Raised by Grandparents: His parents died when he was very young, resulting in him being raised by his grandfather Ziminar.
  • Shipper on Deck: He really ends up shipping Nephera and Vinea together, and seems supportive of Nephera and Lucifer at the same time.
  • The So-Called Coward: He's known as nothing in a fight and is well aare of it, but he can step up when he needs to.
  • Talking the Monster to Death: While Malphas Baal is capable of killing him with no effort, Zagan manages to reason with him, as his true talent? "Bringing out the best in others."
  • Throwing Your Sword Always Works: He manages to get a hit on Morviak, who is much, much stronger than him, by tossing his sword when Morviak is distracted. It works.

    Gremory Havres

Gremory Havres

  • * 24-Hour Armor: She's never described as out of her armor.
  • Ambiguously Brown: Gremory is described as non-white, but as a demin, no human ethnicity or race is ascribed to her.
  • Because You Were Niceto Me: She grew to love Zagan because of his kindness towards her.
  • Berserk Button: Her illegitimacy can serve as a bit of a trigger for her. Proximity to Naivan Vallikan can as well. He never learns he's her father from a brief fling.
  • Bodyguard Crush: Gremory is in love with Zagan, who's been her charge since they were young.
  • Childhood Friend Romance: She's been in love with Zagan since they were kids, and he realizes he fully reciprocates.
  • Combat by Champion: She faces Morviak in single combat.
  • {[Determinator}}: Gremory refuses to give up, lay down or die. Absolutely refuses.
  • Happily Adopted: She's a Havres in name only. She was all but adopted by the Gehennas and by her master, King Andromalia Sitri.
  • Happily Married: By demon standards, she and Zagan are a happy married couple after Reign in Hell.
  • Heroic Bastard: By demon standards, she's illegitimate from House Havres, but she's one of the most stalwart and heroic demons in hell.
  • Hypercompetent Sidekick: She's one to Zagan, handling all his affairs and protecting him while he admits he's useless without her.
  • Love Epiphany: Realizing Gremory is in love with him is what spurs him on to realize the feeling is mutual.
  • Master Swordsman: Gremory was trained by one of hell's finest warriors and it shows. She's good enough to square off with Morviak himself.
  • Nice Girl: Gremory is incredibly kindhearted and warm to those around her.
  • Posthumous Character: She's dead by the time of Girls on Film and has been for thousands of years.
  • Servile Snarker: She's loyal to Zagan but snarks like hell at him when she gets the chance
  • Shipper on Deck: She ships the heck out of Lucifer and Neph, as well as Lucifer and Vinea.
  • "Shut Up" Kiss: She gives an epic one to Zagan to get him to get ahold of himself during the fight for Havres.
  • Subordinate Excuse: She's in love with her charge and superior Zagan and has been for a good long while.
  • Tsundere: Remarkably so for Zagan, being fiery and insulting to him at times, though all in jest that he returns.

House Baal

    Azazel Baal

Azazel Baal

Appears in: The Kiss of Wrath (mentioned only) | Give Us Forever (mentioned only) | Reign in Hell | Stories Never Told

"Before me, the best is always broken."
https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/azazel_5.jpg

  • Abusive Parents: All of his children appear to fear him very much, and he threatens Karadas before claiming to be kidding. The fact he made his eldest son into a brain-damaged Sex Slave and is willing to do the same to the rest of them, speaks to this as well.
  • Authority Equals Asskicking: Hands down, he's the most powerful demon in all hell and while he far prefers using his intellect or letting his minions do the fighting, he can throw down when he needs to.
  • Bait the Dog: Is willing to spare the children of House Odasiov after their father Barion rebels against him, only to have them brought into his infamous "Court of the Broken" where death would be merciful. He was also the one who instigated the rebellion in the first place.
  • Big Bad: The chief villain of Reign in Hell, the High King of Hell who Lucifer must defeat for the sake of the Fallen.
  • Catchphrase: "The best is always broken," reflecting his disturbing beliefs. This turns out to be House Baal's offical motto, one that he misunderstands as his desire to be the best ends up being his undoing.
  • The Chessmaster: Azazel is a master of the Grand Dance and lays schemes that take millennia to come to fruition, patient all the while.
  • Cruel and Unusual Death: His soul is burned in the most agonizing way possible. Completely and utterly appropriate for his various sadistic and perverse crimes.
  • Deader than Dead: His soul is completely incinerated by Morningstar fire. There's no coming back.
  • Depraved Bisexual: Like most devils and demons he has no issue with gender. Unlike them, he also has no issue with consent, having a massive "Court of the Broken" consisting of sexual slaves, one of his own son.
  • Dramatically Missing the Point: House Baal's motto is "The best is always broken", both as a boast to it's enemies and as a warning to it's members. Azazel uses the saying as a boast, but fails to heed the warning, as his ambitions are what ultimately cause his downfall. Both his mother Lilith and rival Lucifer mocking repeat these words to him.
  • The Dreaded: Azazel is one of the most terrifying and feared demons who ever lived, and even his own household is petrified of him.
  • Duel to the Death: He meets his end in a battle with Lucifer.
  • Evil Counterpart: Azazel is the lord of demons, Lucifer the former top angel. But while Lucifer is devoted to his subordinates, Azazel sees everything below him as a tool to use or break. Lucifer balances all seven sins within him and controls himself while Azazel takes them all to horrific excess.
  • Evil Overlord: Fits this image to a tee. He's a sadistic conqueror, master planner, and monstrous tyrant who behind closed doors visits proclivities on slaves too unspeakable for Hell to imagine. Unusually, he's also a Villain with Good Publicity—though he sometimes puts up very little effort attempting to seem trustworthy.
  • Evil Sounds Deep: His voice is described as quite deep.
  • Fantastic Racism: He despises angels utterly.
  • Fatal Flaw: Azazel cannot resist trying to crush others in his quest to be the best there is, and it leads him to conflicts that eventually unravel him.
  • Faux Affably Evil: Polite, urbane, charming and pleasant, but all a facade to conceal the horrific sadism and limitless cruelty beneath it.
  • Hoist by His Own Petard: Wants so badly to make Lucifer part of his "Court of the Broken", both out of lust and to avenge the way Lucifer humiliated him. His attempt to break his mind with Wormwood ends up giving him the opportunity to annihilate his soul.
  • Humiliation Conga: He's exposed before all of hell by Nephera's scheming, his forces are destroyed and by the end he gets to see hell cheering on his demise as the man he hates most destroys him.
  • "Just Joking" Justification: Azazel threatens his son Karadas before claiming to be kidding.
  • Magic Knight: He fights with a combination of sorcery and physical ability to deadly effect.
  • Manipulative Bastard: Azazel enjoys playing others immensely, setting up clever gambits, schemes and moving those about him like pawns.
  • Mind Rape: Azazel mentally destroys those he places in the Court, leaving only shattered dolls for him to play with. Only his son Dasrian was able to keep a portion of his mind.
  • Necessary Evil: Azazel tries to portray his execution of Barion Odasiov as this, that he was threatening the unity of hell in a critical time. In reality he caused the rebellion in the first place, wanting an excuse to seize there lands, as well as there children for his twisted "Court of the Broken".
  • O.O.C. Is Serious Business: The notion of Vinea going to Sheol causes him to outright panic. He's terrified of his mother Lilith escaping her imprisonment.
  • Parental Incest: Forces his son Dasrian into the Court of the Broken. He repeatedly threatens his only daughter with this at the slightest hint of disobedience, and even his loyal sons are not safe from this either.
  • Sadist: Azazel loves the pain of others, emotional or otherwise. The members of the "Court of the Broken" do not feel pain unless he orders them to do so.
  • Sex Slave: All of Azazel Baal's 'Court of the Broken' members were sex slaves whose minds had been destroyed by him. Including Dasrian, who is the only survivor of the Court. His reason for causing House Odasiov to rebel was to add Barion's children to his court.
  • Shame If Something Happened: He couches his language subtly enough, but the threats are very obvious.
  • Soft-Spoken Sadist: Azazel speaks calmly, but clearly adores the pain and fear of others.
  • Tall, Dark, and Handsome: Tall, dark haired and incredibly good looking.
  • Tall, Dark, and Snarky: His good looks are matched by his dry wit.
  • Tall Poppy Syndrome: Karadas wonders why his father Azazel would goad Barion into rebelling against him saying that was "one of the best". Azazel replies "the best is always broken". This turns out to be House Baal's offical motto, one that he misunderstands as he ends up being the tall poppy that gets cut down.
  • Villain with Good Publicity: Azazel is publicly known as hell's heroic ruler and their High King. His Court of the Broken would be highly, highly illegal there. It's not till the very end of Reign in Hell when all of his various crimes are made public, and he drops all pretenses intending to destroy hell along with the rest of creation.
  • Zerg Rush: His strategy against House Sitri? Rush them with his soldiers and pure numbers, clearly in tire with plotting and theatrics.

    Kasarian Baal

Kasarian Baal

Azazel Baal's eldest son and top lieutenant.

  • Cain and Abel: While he was his father's top enforcer, his twin brother Dasarian received the brunt of his abuse. Or so it appeared. Kasarian admired and respected Dasrian until his own fear drove them apart and Azazel turned Das into his broken slave.
  • Casting a Shadow: Kasarian fights by manipulating shadows in addition to his sword.
  • Don't You Dare Pity Me!: Kasarian refuses to acknowledge pity from anyone, believing it irrelevant and himself far beyond it.
  • The Dragon:
  • Early-Bird Cameo: Has brief appearance at the end of A Conspiracy of Serpents and Give Us Forever. It's not until Reign in Hell where he becomes a major character.
  • Even Evil Has Standards: As cruel and cold as he is, he wishes to defeat Satannus fair and square.
  • Kick The Son Of A Bitch: Gregory Haines, a willing asset to Siegfried's Pine Creek scheme in the previous story, is visited by the mysterious "Mr. Z" and left to the whims of Kasarian for ten minutes
  • Master Swordsman: Kasarian matches Satannus for skill with a blade, no mean feet.
  • Sadist: Innately so. Kasarian was born with a lust for enjoying the agony of others, something he no longer attempts to curtail in the present day.
  • Soft-Spoken Sadist: Kasarian's voice is soft and quiet, and he's a ruthless Torture Technician.
  • The Starscream: Played with. It's hinted he'd like to be this to Azazel, and Azazel takes great joy subtly mocking him over it, but Kasarian either does not or cannot move against his father.
  • The Stoic: Kasarian never emotes or raises his voice, his face always eerily blank.
  • Torture Technician: Acts as this to "Mr. Z" given what happens to Gregory Haines when he displeases Mr. Z.
  • Used to Be a Sweet Kid: Even Kasarian was a good child once, before Azazel molded him into a monster.
  • World's Strongest Man: Kasarian in Reign in Hell is the strongest warrior in all of hell save only Azazel himself.
  • Worthy Opponent: He begins to see Satannus as one, projecting his insecurities onto her and longing to best her in battle.

    Karadas Baal

Karadas Baal

Appears in: The Kiss of Wrath | Reign in Hell

"I am Karadas Baal. Scion of the illustrious House Baal. And you are Daemon Satanael Lucifer. Pitiful indeed. I should let you talk. Hearing you mewl for mercy should prove most amusing."

Son of the late King Azazel Baal and the leader of a shadow order in Hell. Appears in The Kiss of Wrath.

  • All for Nothing: Eons of scheming and plotting comes to a most ignominious end.
  • Bastard Understudy: He models himself most after his monstrous father.
  • Big Bad Wannabe: Karadas doesn't lack for ambition, but he's this for Kiss of Wrath; he's not even introduced until well over halfway, fashions himself a shadowy mastermind capable of taking out even Aleviel and Lucifer before Satannus lets him know just how misplaced that faith is and kills him not that long after he's introduced.
  • Bullying a Dragon: He is NOT in Satannus's league, not remotely, but sees fit to belittle her and make unreasonable demands. If not for her trying to use Karadas to test Daemon, he would've died way, way sooner.
  • The Bus Came Back: Returns for the prequel Reign in Hell after being the Big Bad of short story The Kiss of Wrath.
  • Cornered Rattlesnake: He's a vain, puffed up, pretentious coward, but when he's cornered by Hardestadt/Daemon, he does make a decent show of battle and fights with surprising power and skill.
  • Curbstomp Battle: Karadas is smashed into paste by an enraged young Daemon without much effort. In Reign in Hell, Lucifer smashes him into a wall the moment Karadas draws on him.
  • Dirty Coward: He folds hard when confronted when an enraged Daemon. He tries to run before Satannus shoves him back into the fight.
  • Even Evil Has Standards: Karadas is a horrific toad with few decent qualities to him. But even he is horrified at Azazel casually murdering his brother Orias.
  • Evil Uncle: By demon convention he's Hardestadt's uncle (though not biologically) and a slimy SOB.
  • Eye Pop: His reaction to getting stabbed in the groin with a sword.
  • Fantastic Racism: Karadas is a born demon and unlike most of his kind, he despises Devils.
  • Groin Attack: A painful one courtesy of Satannus.
  • Hate Sink: There's very little to respect or admire about Karadas and his infuriating arrogance and sadism.
  • Humiliation Conga: First his grand spell is easily figured out by Satannus, he's trapped and watches his conspiracy collapse, and then his 'honor guard' are wiped out and he's subjected to an agonizing and humiliating end.
  • Jerkass: Karadas is just a total prick and wastes no time joining in treating poor Vinea like trash when Azazel is terrorizing her. Even long after Reign in Hell, he's no less a spiteful, arrogant wretch.
  • Kick the Dog: Groping and kissing Satannus in front of Daemon before trying to have him carved apart by his beloved teacher is not exactly his finest moment.
  • No Kill like Overkill: Slashed into a fine pink mist by Daemon and Satannus.
  • Overlord Jr.: The son of the late King Azazel Baal and in a mind to succeed his father.
  • Rape Is a Special Kind of Evil: Freely admits he wouldn't bother heeding another's 'signal' (a grievous, grievous taboo among demons) and fondly reminisces upon his father's 'Court of the Broken', where his damaged 'toys' were kept.
  • Rasputinian Death: Used as a ping pong ball to be smacked between Daemon and Satannus, speared through the groin, flung at Daemon again and then chopped up so many times he's reduced to a fine red mist.
  • Sadist: Admits he won't be satisfied in simply killing Daemon with a curse, but wants to see his own teacher tear him to shreds first so he can savor the look in betrayal.
  • Small Name, Big Ego: Karadas thinks having the name of Baal means he has the same ability as his feared and dreaded father. Not quite.
  • The Starscream: He can barely hide his ambition to one day overthrow his father.
  • Smug Snake: One of the smuggest — and also least effectual — villains in the entire plot. Even when she's undercover, Satannus can barely hide how exasperating she finds him. He wasn't much better when House Baal was at its apex.
  • Underestimating Badassery: He treats Daemon/Hardestadt as a weakling, only to find out how dangerous the young devil truly is. He also thinks he has Satannus under his thumb. Turns out this is a horrific mistake.
  • Unknown Rival:He considers himself a worthy challenge to Lucifer and Satannus. Satannus can't even remember if he's actually Azazel's son and only tolerates him to test her student out. Lucifer barely registers his existence and could unmake him with zero effort.
  • Unwitting Pawn: Twice over. Nephera and Satannus both play him perfectly.
  • The Usurper: Planning to take over Hell and usurp the throne from Lucifer. Emphasis on "planning" with very little success.
  • Villainous Breakdown: Oh, he does not take it well when Satannus gleefully reveals how badly his plans have fallen down around him.
  • You Killed My Father: He has this against Lucifer, though he's more concerned with the loss of status than any filial affection.

    Vinea Baal

Vinea Baal

Appears in: Reign in Hell

Azazel Baal's only daughter, who serves as a king on the council.

  • Ain't Too Proud to Beg: She begs Azazel at points when he shows her the Court of the Broken, as a stark reminder of what awaits her should she defy him. Who can blame the poor girl?
  • Broken Bird: Vinea Baal is described by Malachor himself, then a soldier in the House of Baal, as "so broken she can't even trust herself."
  • Eerie Pale-Skinned Brunette: Like most of House Baal, Vinea is eerily pale, with black hair.
  • The Friend Nobody Likes: No other King even makes a pretense of respecting Vinea, considering her a spineless and useless puppet to her father.
  • Good Parents: In the present, Vinea is a loving, caring mother to her natural son Abaddon and her two foster sons, Azmodan and Daemon/Hardestadt (by demon custom, this makes her their mother as much as if they were connected biologically.)
  • Hidden Depths: Vinea is far smarter than she appears, managing to easily manipulate Karadas by way of conversation to give information to a hidden Gemory.
  • Inadequate Inheritor: Vinea's seat once belonged to the great demon heroine King Andromalia Sitri before her death. By contrast, Vinea is a terrified little mouse of a demon who knuckles under to her horrific father constantly.
  • My Girl Is Not a Slut: Dark example. Azazel notes Vinea has never taken a lover, mockingly deriding her for it, while making it clear what he eventually wants from her.
  • Not Afraid of You Anymore: She attempts to pull this off with Azazel, finally standing up to him and rejecting fear of him, even if she's clearly petrified still being in the same room as him.
  • Parental Incest: Her father Azazel threatens to make her part of the "Court of the Broken". Vinea, naturally, hates and fears her father with this as her greatest fear.
  • Puppet King: Vinea is only one King of nine, including her dread father, but nobody on the council is remotely convinced she's anything but her father's pawn and an extra vote.
  • She Is the King: In hell, 'King' is not a title that takes gender into account, and she is one of the nine kings on the Council.
  • Shrinking Violet: King Vinea is nothing more than her father, High King Azazel's tiebreaker and pawn on the council and is immensely nervous and shy in the public eye. When she speaks out of turn at the council, everyone is stunned to hear her voice an opinion.
  • Silk Hiding Steel: There are hints that Vinea's shattered exterior is not the entirety of her. She gives key hints to Gremory without her siblings noticing and demonstrates growing signs of breaking from her father's horrific abuse.
  • Token Good Teammate: She's the only completely moral member of House Baal.
  • Took a Level in Badass: At some point after Reign in Hell, Vinea rises to become the powerful, strong-willed and intelligent King of Hell seen in later volumes.
  • We Used to Be Friends: She and Nephera were once the dearest of friends before she was taken back by her father and broken entirely him.

    spoilers

Dasrian Baal

Appears in: Give Us Forever | Reign in Hell

Dasrian: "My oaths have betrayed each other, until nothing remains to keep."

Malachor's right hand man. He turns out to be the eldest son of Azazel, being twins with Kasarian.

  • Abusive Parents: He was Azazel Baal's eldest son, and Azazel eventually made of him a mind-shattered sex slave.
  • Apologetic Attacker: He often apologizes to those he's fighting, having no true wish to harm anyone.
  • Battle in the Center of the Mind: The fight with Dasrian is almost entirely mental as he attempts to consume the minds of his opponents with their worst fears and memories.
  • Hates Being Touched: The Court of the Broken left him being unable to stand the touch of another to his bare skin.
  • Honorary Uncle: Alineia considers him a beloved uncle.
  • The Mole: He's Malachor's spy within the Malebolge, for all his service to Azmodan.
  • Morality Pet: He loves Alineia as much as she loves him.
  • Not So Stoic: Dasrian very, very rarely emotes until the end, when he goes into a furious rant as he describes his backstory and why he is so loyal to Malachor.
  • Parental Incest: Unwillingly. Dasrian was forced into the Court of the Broken by his father, High King Azazel Baal.
  • Pet the Dog: Dasrian clearly loves Alineia and treats her very well. He also does his best to temper Malachor's worst urges and excesses, albeit without much success.
  • Psychic Powers: Some of the most powerful in the entire setting. He was capable of sending Karai into the Dreamlands for centuries, and uses these powers to deadly effect in the battle with him.
  • Rape as Backstory: Dasrian was an unwilling sex slave for his father, and to keep his mental powers sharp, he relives the experience constantly.
  • Sex Slave: Was part of his father Azazel's 'Court of the Broken' whose members were sex slaves whose minds had been destroyed by him, and who is the only survivor.
  • The Stoic: Dasrian almost never, ever emotes.
  • Sunk Cost Fallacy: "When we stand in an ocean of blood, what is one more drop?" Averted with his final answer to that question: everything.
  • Tragic Villain: Dasrian is indicated to have lived a tormented life that has led to his Undying Loyalty toward Malachor. He was part of his father Azazel's "Court of the Broken" consisting of sexual slaves. He was the only one who could retain his mind throughout the ordeal which made it even worse as he could realize what he had become. It was being rescued by Malachor and given a new purpose that caused Dasrian loyalty to him.
  • Undying Loyalty: Dasrian is loyal to none other as he is to Malachor, referring to his betrayal of Azmodan and merely revealing his true loyalties.
Dasrian: "Being as useful to Lord Malachor as I can is everything to me! It is my reason for being!"

House Archayus

    Malachor Archayus

Malachor Archayus

Appears in: Give Us Forever | Reign in Hell
"Sometimes I may even feel I can try to balance a thousand heavy sins with a scant handful of inadequate charities."

The former lord of the eight circle of hell, until Azmodan gained it in a Duel to the Death. In Give Us Forever he is brought back to life by the Black Sun and forms a partnership with Aleviel

  • Abusive Parents: Malachor's nameless father, in his flashbacks, is almost singlehandedly responsible for Malachor having turned into the dreaded monster he is in the present day, turning him from a relatively normal demon into a supernatural weapon only capable of feeling pain in his crusade to take over Heaven, throwing him over the Despair Event Horizon with a few simple words: "Not even for one single, solitary instant did I ever love you!"
  • Back from the Dead: A particularly cruel instance. Malachor, who was tricked into killing his own sister and is forced into becoming an eternally-anguished puppet of his father, longs for nothing more than death's embrace above everything. He gets it... for all of a chapter, before he's brought back to life by Mr. Z.
  • Brother–Sister Incest: He and his half-sister Danaria were lovers, thanks to the manipulations of his father.
  • The Chessmaster: He's a brilliant manipulator and capable partner to Aleviel in this.
  • Cultured Badass: Malachor is oddly genteel for an evil demon lord who lives to cause pain. He is also oddly found of poetry. As he puts it, he's had little to do for centuries save to read a lot.
  • Death Seeker: Most of Malachor's evil is to create someone to destroy him, longing to die and be free of the nightmarish existence that is his entire life. Malachor achieves his goal at the climax and dies in complete peace and gratitude—only for Mr. Z to resurrect him in the name of the Black Sun.
  • Despair Event Horizon: Being tricked into murdering his sister and discovering his life was a lie, that not even his father had ever loved him resulted in him crossing this. And then his father made sure he never came back.
  • The Dreaded: Malachor is one of the most feared demons in the history of hell, for good reason.
  • Driven to Villainy: Thanks to a horrific spell, Malachor is numb, utterly sealed off from feeling and pleasure except in the pain of others. He had no choice but to become a monster, and despises every moment of it.
  • Exact Words: "Make him see you kill the ones you love." Hardestadt only has to see it—and Malachor pulls that off with a lifelike illusion.
  • Forced to Watch: Aleviel's orders Malachor to take and Hardestadt "make him see you kill the ones you love." Erin's seeming death through this is a ruse, though, calculated to enrage Stadt.
  • Go Out with a Smile: He manages to pass away, smiling all the while, at peace. Though it doesn't last.
  • Graceful Loser: Takes his loss to Hardestadt and the others in stride, mostly because they're giving him exactly what he wants: death. Sadly, his release doesn't last.
  • Happily Married: Cruelly subverted. Malachor, after his curse, tried to run away and married a mortal woman named Aurelia, even becoming a simple farmer for years. Despite her love for him and their seemingly idyllic life, his curse rendered him incapable of returning the feelings, as hard as he tried.
  • Hidden Depths: Malachor Archayus is, on the surface, a ruthless and utterly stoic demon with a known history of mass torture and murder who is entirely willing to participate in Aleviel and Urizen's schemes. Beneath the monstrous, feared exterior, Malachor is hinted to be someone much wiser and solemn, wit[h hints of softness that come out with Ali. As it turns out, all of this revolves around the revelation of his horrific past; Malachor's own father transformed him into his broken toy, and anything aside from the ability to wring pain from others has long eroded from the demon lord.
  • If I Wanted You Dead...: Malachor offers Azmodan a drink of wine, and notes that "if I intended to poison you, I'd be far subtler about it".
  • Licked by the Dog: One of the first major signs Malachor isn't pure evil (albeit still undeniably worthy of his reputation) is Ali's innocent fondness for him, which Malachor seems to share.
  • The Man Behind the Man: The plot involving Alineia is masterminded by Malachor Archayus, the thought-dead demon lord as well as his partner in the effort, Aleviel herself.
  • Not Quite Dead: Malachor, old lord of House Archayus and the former master of the Malebolge, who was slain by Azmodan, is revealed to still be alive and one half of the Big Bad Duumvirate in the overall story.
  • Pet the Dog: He saves Urizen's victims that he can, and their families. He's also oddly fond of Alineia as well.
  • Sadist: An extremely tragic example. Malachor was twisted into a monster by a curse who can only take pleasure in the pain of others. He hates it, but cannot deny his nature.
  • Tragic Villain: Malachor was twisted into a weapon and a puppet by his own father for his own purposes, destroying his connection with the rest of his family before admitting to Malachor he had never once been anything more than a tool and a toy to him that he'd never loved.
  • Warrior Poet: He's an incredible warrior and oddly fond of poetry.
  • World's Strongest Man: Malachor is quite possibly the most powerful demon in all history as of present, being psychotically strong.
  • Yank the Dog's Chain: Malachor, a tortured puppet of his father, is killed in the climax as he's always yearned for, only to be resurrected at the very end of the story once again.

    Mr. Z

Malachor's otherwise unnamed father

Appears in: A Conspiracy of Serpents | Give Us Forever | Reign in Hell | Wonderland

"Don't worry, Malachor. It will only hurt forever."

Malachor's unnamed father, who goes by the alias 'Mr. Z.' The reason Malachor is the way he is. Goes by the name Zhavaral Baal in Reign in Hell.

  • Abusive Parents: Is almost singlehandedly responsible for Malachor having turned into the dreaded monster he is in the present day, turning him from a relatively normal demon into a supernatural weapon only capable of feeling pain in his crusade to take over Heaven, throwing him over the Despair Event Horizon with a few simple words: "Not even for one single, solitary instant did I ever love you!"
  • Brother–Sister Incest: Was involved with his sister, given that he is both Malachor's father and uncle.
  • Chekhov's Gunman: Seems like only a backstory character to give Malachor a Freudian Excuse, but Reign in Hell reveals him to be the mysterious mastermind Mr. Z as well as House Baal Loremaster Zhavaral.
  • The Dragon: In modern day, he serves as this to the mysterious 'Black Sun.'
  • The Evil Genius: One of the most brilliant demons to ever live, and a ruthless scientist, functioning as Wormwood's chief cultivator and manipulator.
  • Godhood Seeker: His ultimate goal was to make himself a god, somehow using Malachor to this end.
