Elusia, the Kingdom of Knowledge

https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/481025fd_bf4b_4f3d_a28c_bb58a2c51c04.jpeg

A mysterious snowy nation situated in north-east Elyos. Home to followers of the Fell Dragon. Ruled by Hyacinth the Sage King, who pursues knowledge and wisdom. Their nation is known for its expertise and inventiveness with metallurgy and craftsmanship. Has been enemies with Brodia for a long time. They possess the ring of the Emblem Lyn.

    Kingdom of Elusia in General
  • Be Careful What You Wish For: Many Elusians consider Sombron to be their god and worship him. Sombron rewards Elusia's fervent worship of him by having hundreds, if not thousands of Elusian civilians killed and turned into Corrupted.
  • Dark Is Not Evil: Despite being the home to the followers of the Fell Dragon, many Elusian characters join Alear's army, including the royal family.
  • Deadly Decadent Court: According to Ivy, the royal court is plagued by backstabbing and intrigue, especially between King Hyacinth's wife and his concubines. She points out that Hortensia might not have survived after her mother and primary supporter died if she hadn't been so talented and charismatic, and having to be constantly on her guard is why she's wary around even her retainers.
  • Floral Theme Naming: They're all named after different types of plants:
    • Hyacinth is named after the toxic flower hyacinth.
    • Ivy is named after the ivy plant.
    • Hortensia is the Spanish word for hydrangea.
    • Goldmary is named after the flower of the same name, or possibly marigolds.
    • Rosado is named after roses.
    • Zelkov's name comes from the Zelcova tree.
    • Kagetsu is named for the moonflower ("ka" and "getsu" are alternate readings of the kanji "hana" (flower) and "tsuki" (moon)).
    • Lindon is named similarly to the linden tree.
    • Nelucce's Japanese name, Nelke, is the German word for carnation.
    • Rodine's Japanese name, Rhodan, is likely taken from the Rhodanthemum genus of flowering plants.
  • Grim Up North: Elusia is one of the northernmost kingdoms in the continent and is known for its harsh mountainous landscape and cold climate.
  • The Lost Woods: As well as being home to a frozen landscape, Elusia is home to a dark evergreen forest.
  • Mook Depletion: Elusia actually runs out of able-bodied men to pit against Alear, with the last few being present defending the royal castle in Chapter 20, with most of their fellow guards having already been turned into the Corrupted. Elusia can't even man the castle after the country is secured from Sombron, and is the only main kingdom to lack Training battles (special non-lethal Skirmishes) after its role in the story is complete; in other words, you will run out of green-shirted foes to fight, outside of one DLC chapter.
  • Religion of Evil: Elusia is the home of the Fell Dragon's followers. Played with in that the followers of the Fell Dragon aren't necessarily bad people (As shown by characters like Mauvier) even if the actual being they worship is a complete asshole.
  • Uncertain Doom: Ivy's mother is described in the present-tense in support conversations, indicating that she's still alive. However, Sombron later kills every person in Elusia's castle but it's never clarified whether or not she survived.

    Hyacinth

https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/img_1009_8.PNG

The king of Elusia, and Ivy and Hortensia's father.

  • Abusive Parents: In complete contrast to all the other kings and queens in the other countries, Hyacinth treats his daughter Ivy as little more than a tool, and effectively abandons her to die when she loses her Emblem Ring. However, both Ivy and Hortensia mention that he used to be a kind and loving father, but he changed drastically when Sombron reawakened. His change in personality came about when he fell under Sombron's thrall as he reawakened, and when he is killed as a Corrupted, his true kind self returns as he dies, with his last words telling Ivy and Hortensia how much he loves them.
  • Adaptational Nice Guy: In the manga he's shown to have been a very caring father, even sneaking behind the back of Ivy's mother to have tea and cake with her and Hortensia just to make them happy. Additionally, it's immediately obvious that he's under Sombron's control from the moment it happens as opposed to the more subtle implications in the game.
  • Asshole Victim: Subverted. While he seemed deserving to be eaten by Sombron after zombifying King Morion, various story points and supports show Hyacinth was someone meant to be mourned for (as Sombron made him into a thrall before he did any of the evil things we see in the game, with multiple characters professing that when he was in his right mind Hyacinth was a good man).
  • Big Bad Wannabe: Although perhaps "Dragon Wannabe" would fit him better, since he only wishes to be Lord Sombron's most trusted servant. He believes that he will be able to crush Alear and their forces using his army, Emblem Ring, and a Corrupted Morion, but all are swiftly dispatched when Alear's group arrives at Elusia Castle. He also believes himself to be far too valuable to Sombron to be tossed aside as he is the King of the nation from which many followers of the Fell Dragon emerge. He's dead wrong about that, too.
  • Brainwashed and Crazy: He fell under Sombron's thrall when he reawakened, causing his drastic change in personality.
  • Came Back Wrong: He is revived as a Revenant Zombie Corrupted by Veyle, forcing Ivy and Hortensia to put him down.
  • Casting Gag: In Japanese, he's voiced by none other than Nintendo regular Takashi Nagasako, the most common voice for Ganondorf, as well as Ike's dad, Greil, in Fire Emblem: Path of Radiance.
  • Dead Hat Shot: After Sombron eats Hyacinth, a shot of his Emblem Ring, the Ring of the Lady of the Plains, is shown falling to the ground.
  • Deal with the Devil: Hyacinth bought into the Fell Dragon cult under Veyle to get enough power to finally defeat Brodia, which had been repeatedly invading Elusia to prevent Elusia from invading them. Once he got Sombron's power, however, he became enthralled by it and would effectively lose control of his own country, including himself.
  • Devour the Dragon: His ultimate fate is to be literaly gobbled up by Sombron for more power.
  • Disc-One Final Boss: In a sense. Even though Sombron is clearly the Big Bad and Final Boss, Hyacinth is the ruler of Elusia and its army, as well as the one responsible for his kingdom's royalty and their retainers coming after the Divine One and the Emblem Rings. Plus, he baited Morion into meeting his army on the battlefield to capture and use him as a sacrifice for the Fell Dragon. After defeating Hyacinth, however, instead of facing Sombron and the hooded girl, Alear finds all their collected rings to be stolen, giving Sombron the clear upper hand and forcing their side to flee for their lives… and the game hasn't even reached the halfway point.
  • The Dragon: He sees himself as Sombron's most valuable asset. Turns out that Veyle fits the position much better than he does.
  • Dying as Yourself: He regains his sense of humanity as he dies after being defeated as one of the Corrupted, telling his daughters how proud he is and how much he loves them, with a final plea for them to save Elusia.
  • Evil Overlord: He rules over Elusia with an iron fist and is more than willing to let his children die should they fail him and his deity. He isn't evil of his own accord, however.
  • Expy: While having an Evil Overlord under the thrall of another dark force is far from new in the Fire Emblem series, he takes the most after King Garon of Nohr, as he was allegedly a loving father but had affairs with several mistresses that would lead to a Deadly Decadent Court and no end of grief for his surviving children. To drive the point home, his daughters Ivy and Hortensia are clearly based on Garon's daughters Camilla and Elise.
  • Gender-Blender Name: Hyacinth is normally a female name.
  • The Heavy: Sombron is not seen in the present day until the end of Chapter 10. Up until that point, Elusia's forces are being commanded by King Hyacinth (not to mention the hooded girl and Zephia). He sends his Royal children and their retainers to attack all those who ally with the Divine Dragon in the hopes of claiming their Emblem Rings. In addition, the rings that his daughters already have were provided to them by him. He is also responsible for wounding, kidnapping, and sacrificing King Morion in a ritual to gradually give Sombron back his power. He stops being The Heavy after Chapter 10, however, because the Fell Dragon eats him.
  • Kung-Fu Wizard: As a Martial Master, he is adept with his fists.
  • Names to Run Away from Really Fast: He's named after a toxic flower of the same name, and he seeks to awaken Sombron.
  • Puppet King: It's clear as day that he is only still on the throne because Sombron sees further use for him. Once the latter devours him whole, Sombron rules over Elusia personally from that point onward.
  • Revenant Zombie: In contrast to Morion being a typical run-of-the-mill mindless zombie when he became a Corrupted, due to Evil Veyle being better at necromancy than Sombron, Hyacinth retains enough sentience to be able to speak in words and act as he did prior to when he was eaten by Sombron, albeit being even more twisted than he already was while under Sombron's thrall when he reawakened.
  • Too Dumb to Live: Hyacinth reviving Sombron, a being that feeds on the blood of royals. Since Hyacinth himself is a royal, what did he think was going to happen?
  • Took a Level in Jerkass: Implied to have done this, due to Ivy and Hortensia mentioning that he used to be a kind and loving father, but he changed drastically as Sombron reawakened and fell under his thrall, to the point that he treated his Ivy as little more than a tool, and effectively abandons her to die in Chapter 9, after she lost Emblem Leif to the party in Chapter 8.
  • Well-Intentioned Extremist: He encouraged his nation's worship of the Fell Dragon even before falling under Sombron's thrall in the belief Sombron could bring prosperity to his troubled country.
  • You Have Outlived Your Usefulness: After Hyacinth sacrifices Morion to Sombron, Sombron decides he needs more "sovereign blood", and devours Hyacinth for it.

Click to see Hortensia in Fire Emblem Heroes

The second princess of the Kingdom of Elusia, and Ivy's little sister. Has an innocent and selfish personality, but adores those closest to her. Under the orders of her father, the King, she stands before Alear to steal their Emblem Rings.

Her personal skill, Big Personality, gives her an extra tile of range when using healing staves.

  • Action Fashionista: The Ally Notebook states that she enjoys fashion and that one of her hobbies is cosmetics. She's also fairly competent on the battlefield.
  • All There in the Manual: The Ally Notebook notes that Hortensia has siblings other than Ivy, but that they couldn't withstand the abuse from Ivy's mother and left the Elusian court. Whether these are half-siblings from other mistresses of Hyacinth, full siblings who left after their shared mother's death, or full siblings not as well-liked by their mother as Hortensia is not confirmed.
  • Always Accurate Attack: Has the ability to achieve this with the inherited skill Divine Pulse+. If a unit with the skill performs an attack and misses, it has a chance to trigger and turn the miss into a guaranteed hit. This occurs at a rate of 50%, which is increased by an additional point of percent per point of luck the user possesses. Céline and Hortensia, in their unique classes, are the only two units in the game who can reach 50 luck to guarantee the skill's activation without additional boosts to their luck. This also applies to status-inflicting staves, such as Freeze or even Entrap, provided the target doesn't have an ability to prevent those effects from being applied at all.
  • Always Someone Better: It's less obvious than with Alcryst and Diamant, but Hortensia's supports with Fogado and Lindon reveal that she feels inadequate in comparison to Ivy.
  • Anti-Villain: Like her sister Ivy, Hortensia is only following her father's orders to steal the Emblem rings from Alear to gain his approval. She drops the villain part entirely after she is broken free from Zephia's brainwashing spell.
  • Badass Adorable: She prides herself on being as cute as possible and is a capable fighter to boot.
  • Birds of a Feather: She and her two retainers are all quite conceited about their looks.
  • Beat the Curse Out of Him: In Chapter 14, Alear and Ivy and the rest of the party beat her to snap her out of Zephia's mind control spell.
  • Black Magician Girl: She's a excitable and attention-seeking girl who wields offensive magic on the battlefield, albeit she's more supportively oriented compared to her sister.
  • Bonding over Missing Parents: She becomes a bit more sympathetic toward Veyle after hearing about the latter losing her mother. As her remark that "You've lost family too," and her supports with Ivy show, Hortensia also lost her mother.
  • Boring, but Practical: Hortensia's signature skills may not be flashy compared to other characters and their unique skills, but both of them come in handy when it comes to handling staff weapons, due to their have limited uses and how rare more valuable staves are. World Tree comes very much in handy for conserving rarer and more valuable staves such as Entrap and Fortify, especially on higher difficulties where money is scarce. Additionally, Big Personality allows Hortensia to use healing staves such as Mend at a safer distance, as while Physic can heal at a long distance, it lacks healing power compared to more powerful staves which require the unit to be adjacent to a unit to work. While Hortensia's healing abilities are not be as fun or exciting as placing her on the front lines to tank mages, it gets the job done.
  • Born Lucky: In terms of gameplay, her luck stat is incredibly high. In the plot however, this is mostly subverted due to everything that happens to her.
  • Brainwashed and Crazy: She falls under Zephia's mind control spell in Chapter 14, forcing Alear and Ivy to take her down one last time and snap her out of it. It thankfully works, and she decides to join Alear's army once she's back on her feet.
  • Bratty Half-Pint: Prior to being recruited after Chapter 14, she tends to act like a spoiled brat who makes a lot of trouble for the player out of desperately seeking her father's approval. Even when recruited, Hortensia can still be a brat in her supports, desperately wanting people to comment how cute she is.
  • Break the Cutie: Oh, this poor girl. First her mother dies when she is only seven years old, leading her to have to figure out how to make allies in Elusia's Decadent Court alone, then years later she watches her loving father become a more cruel man after Sombron's return, then she's mistakenly led to believe that her big sister has been killed by Alear, then she has to watch Sombron gruesomely devour Hyacinth while Veyle laughs about it in her face, and THEN gets forcibly brainwashed by Zephia into attempting to kill her sister. Somebody hug this kid.
  • Combat Medic: Her exclusive classes allow Hortensia to use both staves and tomes in combat.
  • Coordinated Clothes: Her unique promoted class, Sleipnir, gives her spikes behind her head, just like the outfit her father wears. And just like Ivy, Hortensia wears a rose around her neck.
  • Corrupted Character Copy: A downplayed example towards Elise from Fire Emblem Fates. Both are younger siblings of an antagonistic nation who fight as mounted healers. Elise was a Spoiled Sweet girl who always disagreed with her Obviously Evil father and never antagonized the player on any path, while Hortensia can act like a spoiled brat who makes a lot of trouble for the player out of desperately seeking her father's approval. Even when recruited, Hortensia can still be a brat in her supports, but she is still a genuinely good person deep down.
  • Curtains Match the Window: Her hot-pink eyes match her primarily hot-pink hair.
  • Daddy's Girl: Hortensia loves her father to a fault, as Hyacinth loves her back. Her seeking the approval of her father is why she opposes the Divine Dragon's army with her sister and is also what leads into her being mind-controlled by Zephia. This is also why Hortensia refuses to forgive Veyle for causing her father's death at first.
  • Deconstructed Character Archetype: Of Elise. Both were raised in a Deadly Decadent Court and love their family very much. However, Hortensia showcases just how these traits can easily be corrupted - Hortensia will not hesitate to kill if it means getting her family back or avenging her beloved half-sister.
  • Deliberately Cute Child: One of Hortensia's defining character traits. She always tries to make herself as cute as possible in order to make herself seem more appealing towards others. Her support with Alear reveals that it's because being appealing saved her mother's life at one point, as when she was in court, she used her charming nature to turn rivals and enemies into friends through sheer determination and charisma despite initially being ostracized as a mere mistress. Hortensia sees capitalizing on her own cuteness to make people see her more favorably as the best way to ensure her place as royalty despite being the daughter of a concubine.
  • Demoted to Extra: After having been freed from Zephia's brainwashing and reuniting with her retainers, Hortensia immediately falls off of the plot after chapter 16, and therefore no longer appears or contributes dialogue in the cutscenes.
  • Fragile Speedster: Hortensia's stats lean heavily into Hit, Avo, Spd, Mag and Res, at the expense of Def, as well as being the most vulnerable to archers with her signature class, Sleipnir Rider. Enemy attacks directed at her will most likely miss, but caution around archers is still necessary.
  • Forgotten First Meeting: She actually first met Goldmary saving her life when she got caught up in a skirmish between Brodia and Elusia but Goldmary didn't give Hortensia her name so she forgot about the incident until Goldmary brings it up in their A-support.
  • Good Parents: Hortensia was fond of her mother, who'd managed to win over many people with her natural charm and good nature. She was so well-loved even Ivy's mother eventually came to befriend her despite initially mistreating her due to jealousy.
  • Grade Skipper: Ivy reveals in her A-Support with Hortensia that the latter was talented enough to skip grades at the academy until she had caught up with Ivy herself.
  • Grave-Marking Scene: In the credits Hortensia is shown mourning in front of her father's grave, before turning to see Rosado and Goldmary coming to comfort her.
  • Has a Type: She has a particular interest in beautiful/cute men rather than overly masculine men. She notably takes to Emblem Roy and Prince Alcryst despite their Brodian heritage due to them being "beautiful" and "cute" respectively.
  • Healing Hands: Her personal skill, Big Personality, gives one extra point of range to healing staffs.
  • Helium Speech: In the English dub, although no helium is involved, when she's not in her sad mode and is acting all cutesy, she speaks in a very high pitched and squeaky voice.
  • Jerkass to One: Treats Veyle like rubbish even though she openly acknowledges that Veyle was only evil because she was brainwashed, though she explains that it’s because she can’t forget the sight of Veyle laughing at her father’s death. In an attempt to mend their relationship, Veyle apologizes for trying to force a friendship, then talks about how she’s lost her family too and how harshly she's been treated over the years just for being a Fell Dragon. Hortensia apologizes, saying that she was inconsiderate, and in their A-Support, she warms up enough to Veyle to attempt a friendship.
  • Kubrick Stare: At the end of her introductory cutscene, as she comments on Alear's mismatched-colored eyes.
  • My God, What Have I Done?: She's overwhelmed with guilt over taking Queen Seforia hostage in order to obtain the remaining Emblem rings, and if spoken to after a battle in Solm Palace, notes that while she can't bear to face Seforia, she owes another apology once everything is over.
  • Mythology Gag:
    • Hortensia uses Lucina when encountered as a boss in chapter 7. Hortensia rides a Pegasus, similar to Sumia, one ofnote  Lucina's potential mothers and the sister she would have with that mother(Cynthia).
    • Hortensia wields Byleth when encountered as a boss in chapters 10 and 14, and she herself is an academy student.
    • While Hortensia is the Elise to Ivy's Camilla, she is the one with a Mercenary and a wyvern-riding retainers instead of her sister.
  • Nonconformist Dyed Hair: Inverted as she dyes her hair to conform to the Deadly Decadent Court in her kingdom. In contrast to the other characters in the game, Hortensia dyes her hair pink as part of maintaining her cute image.
  • Non-Standard Character Design: By contrast to most other characters, Hortensia's design is a mix between clowns and Alice in Wonderland, making her look less medieval-like as a result. And like Yunaka, she has a tattoo on her face, which isn't what one would typically see in Fire Emblem characters. However, her design does make sense with context, with how she tries extremely hard to look as cute as possible.
  • No, You: After Alcryst calls her kingdom wicked, she says Brodia is the wicked nation for invading Elusia so often.
  • Plot Armor: In Classic mode, she won't die if her HP drops to 0, due to her story presence being necessary in certain cutscenes, namely reuniting with her retainers Rosado and Goldmary two chapters after her recruitment. However, after she's played her role in the story, her plot armor expires and she will die if she falls in battle.
  • Pre-Mortem One-Liner:
    "Don't mess with the princess!"
    "My time to shine!"
    "Now you've done it!"
    "I want my life back!"
  • Proud Beauty: Not to the extent of her retainers, but Hortensia loves to make a show of how cute she finds herself. This is because she wants to be like her mother, who won the hearts of the Elusian court through her charm.
  • Recurring Element:
    • Hortensia fits the series' Maria archetype, as an un-promoted staff-toting Princess who joins your team to deal with unfortunate circumstances, notably when you (probably) already have a healer.
    • She also resembles the Linde archetype with her personality and joining time, and Lysithea with her Child Prodigy status.
  • Red Eyes, Take Warning: Her eyes turn red to show the viewer when she is under Zephia's mind-altering influence.
  • Resistant to Magic: Hortensia is extremely resilient against magic attacks, sporting a massive Resistance growth, and her Resistance caps at a massive 54note .
  • Reverse Psychology Backfire: In her C-Support with Alcryst, she tries to give him a boost of confidence by saying she won't help him because he's a Brodian prince, hoping he'll get angry enough to overcome his usual timidity. Unfortunately, this being Alcryst she's dealing with, it doesn't work.
  • Saying Too Much: In her introductory scene in Chapter 7, she complain that her older sister got the job of attacking the castle, inadvertently tipping off Alear and the Brodians to the planned invasion of Brodia Castle. After Alear expresses surprise, Hortensia sheepishly admits that she shouldn't have said it.
  • Schmuck Bait: During your Chapter 10 encounter with Hortensia, you may be tempted to send Alear at her to explain what happened to her sister, perhaps to defuse the situation (or just for bonus dialogue). Don't; she happens to have the first Dragon-slaying weapon in the game (Byleth's relic lance) in her back pocket, and she'll use it on Alear at the first opportunity, which will very likely result in Alear being killed instantly (unless they're heavily-armored).
  • Sexy Backless Outfit: Her outfit as a Sleipnir Rider exposes her bare back.
  • Sibling Yin-Yang: Hortensia has a bubbly and innocent personality in contrast to her serious and quiet older sister. She starts out hostile to Veyle over the role her other self played in Hyacinth's death, while Ivy never holds a grudge after learning about Veyle's Split Personality. Furthermore, while Ivy's relationship with her retainers is (initially) purely one of boss and subordinate, Hortensia is genuine friends with Rosado and Goldmary from the get-go; it helps that they're not officially Hortensia's retainers, as revealed in Hortensia's B support with Goldmary.
  • Significant Name Shift:
    • In her supports with Veyle, she is the only person besides Alear, Veyle's elder sibling who refuses to call the latter "Lady Veyle," out of rudeness due to her blaming Veyle for her father's death. This changes in their A support, when they do become friends.
    • In her first appearance, she, a worshipper of the Fell Dragon, calls Sombron "Lord Sombron," while omitting titles for Lumera due to seeing the Divine Dragon as her enemy. Late in the game, if she's spoken to after a battle in Gradlon Temple, she'll say, "We should raze Sombron’s temple to the ground for what he did to Father and Queen Lumera," reflecting her Heel–Face Turn and changing loyalties.
  • Spoiled Sweet: At first, Hortensia comes across as a Spoiled Brat when she is introduced as one of Alear's enemies prior to joining the party after Chapter 14; being overly demanding, immature, wanting things to go her way, and not taking "no" for an answer. However, later chapters show that Hortensia is an Anti-Villain who just wants to make her father proud, protect her country, and is shown to care very much about her older sister and her retainers. Once she joins the party, Hortensia still acts a little selfish sometimes and flaunts her cuteness more than a few times, but despite all of that, she is actually very nice and cares a lot about friends and allies, and even helps them out with their problems.
  • Stepford Smiler: While Hortensia does her best to keep up her bubbly and happy exterior, it's evident in both the main story and in her support conversations that the war has taken a very heavy toll on her.
Hortensia: "I can’t, Rosado. I can’t dwell on the academy. I don’t get to do that anymore. I’m a princess, and that means I keep smiling, all the time, forever."
  • Support Party Member: Her personal skill gives her +1 Range to all staves, and the class skill of her unique class gives her a chance to not consume a staff charge upon usage. This, coupled with her extremely low HP as a playable character, means it's usually best to have her providing support through heals, warping and obstructing enemies from the rear instead of the front lines.
  • This Looks Like a Job for Aquaman: If you're willing to pony up the 90,000 Gold to finish Elusia's donation chain, the primary reward is the Nodus, an S-Rank staff that fully charges the whole party's Engage meters... but has only 1 Durability. In someone else's hands, Nodus is a one-use panic button. In Hortensia's hands, her promotion's World Tree skill rolling a chance to not consume staff durability means it's possible to keep everyone Engaged for the entire map. The fact that the Nodus comes from Hortensia's own homeland is surely not a coincidence.
  • True Companions: Its noted in her B-support with Goldmary that neither she nor Rosado are Hortensia's official retainers, having not been hand-picked by king Hyacinth. They were just Hortensia's friends at the academy, yet when the war started they insisted on sticking with Hortensia and show that they are willing to turn on their home country just to get a chance to rescue her.
  • Unluckily Lucky: On one hand, Hortensia, over the course of the game, loses her father, has to betray her own country to save it from the Fell Dragon, is led to believe her sister died, before said sister joins the Divine Dragon, and gets brainwashed, before being forced to team up with Veyle, who she despises for what her Evil Split Personality did. Quite a list, to say the least. On the other hand, she was a student before she went to war, not even a trained soldier, and survives multiple encounters with the Divine Dragon before joining them, something quite a few of their other enemies can't say.
  • Verbal Backspace: If she successfully cooks a meal with a C-Rank or higher, she'll say she packed the Divine Dragon a meal with chaos, before quickly changing it with the word "love".
  • Villainous Harlequin: Downplayed; With her striped, poofy outfit and candy-colored hair, she seems like a clownish minion of the Fell Dragon at first. Soon after, it becomes clear that she was just following orders from her father, clearly corrupted by the Fell Dragon. Once she becomes recruited, she subverts this trope entirely.
  • Visual Pun: In Heroes, Hortensia's Arcane Charmer staff is a golden heart-themed staff. In other words, while she may be selfish, she has a heart of gold.
  • "Well Done, Daughter!" Girl: Despite being aware of her father's change in personality, she tries her damnedest to follow them and to oppose the Heroes for the first half of the game, as all she wants is to be praised by her father again.
  • Wicked Heart Symbol: She has a heart painted on her face and first appears in the story as an antagonist. Once she joins however, this is averted.
  • You Killed My Father: She refuses to forgive Veyle for killing her father Hyacinth, and starts off incredibly hostile towards her in their support chain.
"My father is dead because of you. Why would I want to be friends?!"
  • You're Not My Father: In her battle dialogue with Corrupted Hyacinth, Hortensia refuses the latter's request to join him, saying that she wants to live up to her real father before Sombron ruined him.

Retainers and Others

    Zelkov

Birthday: 8/2

Class: Thief

Voiced by: Yu Taniguchi (Japanese), David Matranga (English)

https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/zelkovfe17portrait.png
Mystery Man

A royal knight from Elusia, and Ivy's retainer. Has a quiet and obsessive personality, with many hobbies. Extremely passionate and always searching for something he can sink his time in. He sleeps the least out of everyone in the army.

His personal skill, Not *Quite*, reduces an enemy unit's Accuracy by -10 if they initiate combat against Zelkov.

  • Accent Upon The Wrong Syllable: His odd manner of speaking has him placing random emphasis on certain words and syllables. In the subtitles they're written *like this*.
  • Achilles' Heel: Zelkov has good stats across the board which combined with his classnote  and personal skill make him a very good unit overall. But there's a catch: Zelkov's Resistance is pretty bad. Since Mystical units are able to ignore terrain bonuses, this means that the usual thief tactic of using Corrin to dodgetank on Enemy Phasenote  isn't going to cut it in chapters that feature a lot of sages.
  • Amazing Technicolor Population: Downplayed, because although Zelkov's skin isn't an outright unnatural color, it is still much blacker than normal skin colors.
  • Big Damn Heroes: He pulls one in Chapter 11, somehow managing to steal the Draconic Time Crystal back from Veyle to return to Alear.
  • Bunny-Ears Lawyer: He's a pretty eccentric person, yet is very competent at what he does as seen by how he's able to steal the Draconic Time Crystal back from Veyle.
  • Commonality Connection: With Yunaka in their support chain, as they're both former assassins trying to leave their pasts behind them. Neither of them is keen on actually talking about their pasts, but they bond over a mutual understanding of each other's situation.
  • Dark Is Not Evil: He's an assassin with a rather sinister appearance, but he's a pretty affable guy, especially to the younger members of Alear's group.
  • Desperately Looking for a Purpose in Life: After his parents were killed by bandits, he dedicated the rest of his life to becoming an assassin to avenge them—and avenge them he did, by killing the bandits himself. However, after achieving this goal, he's realized there was nothing left for him to live for as his life was shaped around this one goal. Therefore, he regularly picks up new hobbies, but drops them just as fast, hoping to eventually find the one thing that sticks and gives him a new purpose in life.
  • Expy: He has a few similarities to Niles from Fire Emblem Fates, both of them being individuals with classes relating to the Thief and used to lead criminal lives before becoming retainers to figures of royalty.
  • Face of a Thug: He has a rather uncouth appearance but is fairly docile and amiable. His C support with Clanne has him accidentally scaring the kid by just asking him questions.
  • Fauxlosophic Narration: His B Support with Ivy opens with Zelkov going on a bizarre ramble over the backdrop of outer space. It then cuts to Ivy at the Somniel asking him what on earth he's talking about. Zelkov then says he's describing headache medicine.
  • Fleeting Passionate Hobbies: Zelkov has a habit of picking up new hobbies, but he tends to drop them very quickly. He admits in his supports with Amber that his obsessive attitude towards his hobbies comes largely from his worry that he'll lose his purpose in life as Ivy's retainer once the war ends, and so needs something else to keep him going just in case.
  • Foil: Zelkov is the polar opposite of his fellow retainer Kagetsu. Kagetsu is incredibly energetic and immediately tries to become friends with everyone he meets. Zelkov, on the other hand, is very withdrawn and prefers to devote his energy into his hobbies. Both of them have rather questionable people skills, although for two completely different reasons. Zelkov's many eccentricities make him come as unapproachable on the surface, while Kagetsu is so open and friendly that it often puts other people off. Their personal skills are direct opposites too, with Zelkov having an enemy phase focused skill that lets him avoid attacks better, while Kagetsu effectively gets more accuracy on the player phase instead. One thing they have in common, though, is that they're both pretty nice people, even if they express it in very different ways.
  • Fragile Speedster: Actually averted. Despite being in a class known for being this trope, Zelkov actually has pretty decent defense.
  • Friend to All Children: Zelkov has quite the soft-spot for kids, as shown in his supports with Jean and Anna. In the "Where Are They Now?" Epilogue it's mentioned that he, should he survive the war, would go on to create an academy that is all but stated to have also been an Orphanage of Love.
  • Gratuitous French: All but one of his critical hit quotes are in French. He also speaks French for two of his Chain Attack lines note
  • Heartbroken Badass: Zelkov had his family taken from him at a young age, and many of his supports focus on how much he wishes he could have spent more time with them when he had the chance.
  • Heroic Self-Deprecation: Despite having washed his hands of his past as an assassin, Zelkov in his bond conversation with Corrin expresses insecurity on whether someone like him can ever be anything more than a killer.
  • Hidden Depths: While Zelkov insists that there is no deeper *meaning* to what he says, he often shows a rather *philosophical* side in many of his support conversations.
Zelkov: Moreover, your present self was formed as a *result* of growing apart from your past. In a way, then... if you are the blossom, your past is the fertilizer which *nourished* you.
Yunaka: That's... really insightful, actually. Thanks. Words have weight, Zelkov, and every one of yours is big and heavy.
  • The Insomniac: Downplayed, but the Ally Notebook states that he sleeps the least among all playable characters.
  • In the Hood: As you'd expect from a stealthy assassin, Zelkov's outfit comes with a hood attached. However, he's not seen wearing it in game.
  • Magically Inept Fighter: Zelkov has good stats across the board, except for his rather bad resistance. This can prove to be a problem, as mystical enemies are able to ignore terrain bonuses to Avoid.
  • Missing Mom: Zelkov talks about his late mother in his supports with Jean, noting fondly that he picked up some medicinal skills from her.
  • Misunderstood Loner with a Heart of Gold: Owing to his appearance and unique manner of speaking, he often makes people think he has sinister intentions, when in reality he's a genuinely nice guy. Somewhat zigzagged in that it's not entirely due to his appearance, as it's shown in his supports with Yunaka that, due to his background, he's constantly on guard against those he interacts with, although this is a mindset he actively wants to move out of.
  • No Social Skills: Owing to his many eccentricities, he isn't exactly the easiest person to talk to, to say the least.
  • The Philosopher: Zelkov can come off as pretentious on the surface (Which he himself fully admits to in his C Support with Alear), but it's shown in a number of support conversations that he's a genuinely insightful person when you get down to it.
  • Pre-Mortem One-Liner:
    "Agonie!"
    "Inhumation!"
    "Incinération!"
    "Beneath contempt!"
  • Sherlock Scan: In his A support with Yunaka, Zelkov correctly infers that she didn't become an assassin willingly, since she has no regrets about her past, unlike himself.
  • Too Many Belts: His default casual Somniel outfit, the Belted Vest. In addition to the three belts on the vest itself he's got two around his waist, two on each wrist, and a complicated arrangement on his left leg. Lampshaded by the in-game flavor text, which states "The purpose of the multiple belts is unclear".
  • Tranquil Fury: Zelkov's initial reaction to seeing Ivy's chipper counterpart in the Fell Xenologue is bewildered indifference, but her callous dismissal of his life after his rejection leads him to coldly thank her for making the job of killing her easier, without any change in his tone.
  • Trickster Mentor: It's revealed in Zelkov's A Support with Boucheron that Zelkov was the "Forest Sage" all along, hoping to help Boucheron break his bad sense of direction. It doesn't work, but it's the thought that counts.
  • Undying Loyalty: To Ivy. When Ivy is ordered to hold off the Divine Dragon's army in what is effectively a suicide mission, she tries to dismiss Zelkov, but he and Kagetsu remain by her side anyway. Unlike many examples, though, Ivy and Zelkov actively dislike each other at first, with Zelkov's loyalty mainly coming from his need to have some outlet to devote his energy into rather than any affinity for Ivy in particular. With that being said, Ivy and Zelkov do come to appreciate each other's company more by their A support.
  • Verbal Tic: He *tends* to put *emphasis* on some of his *words*, leading *people* to think they have a hidden *meaning* behind them, but really, that's just how he *talks*.
  • Workaholic: Zelkov devotes himself entirely to his job, as having something to devote himself to gives his life purpose.

A royal knight from Elusia, and Ivy's retainer. Has a cheerful, energetic and friendly personality. Because he was born in a secluded realm, he has an exotic tone of voice.

His personal skill, Blinding Flash, reduces an enemy unit's Avoid by -10 if Kagetsu initiates combat against them.

  • Badass Adorable: A cheerful endearing Nice Guy who easily gets along with companions, he is. A formidable swordsman who can slice his enemies into ribbons, he is as well.
  • Blood Knight: He enjoys putting his combat skills to the test and often challenges other fighters to duel him.
  • Culture Clash: In Kagetsu's culture, kissing someone on the lips is seen as a friendly gesture akin to a high-five. Needless to say, this isn't quite the case with the rest of the army.
  • Defeat Equals Friendship: After leaving his homeland in search of strong opponents, Kagetsu eventually found his way to Elusia castle. There, he defeated every opponent the castle could throw at him... until he fought Zelkov, who ultimately defeated him. King Hyacinth was so impressed at Kagetsu's skill that he put the wanderer in Ivy's service, much to Ivy and Zelkov's displeasure. As time went on, however, Ivy and Zelkov both came to appreciate the young swordsman.
  • Dogged Nice Guy: Platonic variant in his supports with Ivy and Zelkov. They both seemingly brush off his attempts to be friends, but they both come around to him by the end of their supports. It's subverted somewhat though as both Ivy and Zelkov make it clear that they never actually disliked Kagetsu.
  • Eloquent in My Native Tongue: Despite his awkward speech, he actually comes from a very well-off family.
  • Expy: He has a few similarities to Hinata from Fire Emblem Fates, both of them being Hot-Blooded Nice Guys with classes relating to the Myrmidon and retainers to figures of royalty.
  • Foil: Kagetsu is the polar opposite of his fellow retainer Zelkov. Their personal skills contrast each other as well, with Kagetsu having a player phase focused skill that effectively grants him more accuracy, while Zelkov has a more enemy phase focused skill that lets him avoid hits better. One thing they have in common, though, is that they're both pretty nice people, even if they express it in very different ways.
  • Friendly Rivalry: With Merrin. They start off on the wrong foot due to a misunderstanding, but it gets cleared up in their B support. Kagetsu tries to start a rivalry like this with Zelkov in their supports, but given Zelkov's past he really doesn't find the idea of having a duel to be amusing.
  • Hot-Blooded: He travels the world specifically to find strong opponents to fight, and treats sparring matches the same way he does a friendly chat over tea. Downplayed in that he's otherwise a pretty relaxed guy, and he doesn't like to fight only for its own sake: he also considers it an ideal way to learn about other people and their cultures.
  • Irony: Kagetsu and Merrin's support conversations has the former wanting to have a friendly sparring match with Timerra, which the latter refuses to allow. Interestingly, Kagetsu never considered directly asking Timerra for a duel, supported by the fact that the two do not have a support with each other.
  • Jack of All Stats: Kagetsu has excellent base stats across the board, supplemented with good growths. As a result, he can quickly become great in any class the player puts him in, provided that it isn't a spellcasting class.
  • King Incognito: He's actually the heir to the throne back in Pale Sands, but left home as he couldn't bear to live his whole life in such an isolated, stifling environment.
  • Lightning Bruiser: He's as fast as you'd expect from a Swordmaster, but also has the strength and defence to back it up. In fact, the guy's base stats when he becomes playable are unbelievable, and he's only held back by joining in a mediocre class. Luckily for him, this is right around the part of the game that Second Seals become plentiful, making it only a minor inconvenience to reclass him and unleash his true potential.
  • Malaproper: Prone to this due to not being a native speaker of the setting's primary language.
    "Rest in pieces..."
  • Nice Guy: He’s polite and friendly even to his opponents, to the point where Ivy has a hard time trusting that his kindness is genuine. By the end of their support chain, she learns that it is.
  • No Social Skills: Kagetsu's a genuinely friendly person, but you'd think it be common sense to consider that going around and asking random people to fight might give them the wrong idea about your intentions.
  • Pre-Mortem One-Liner:
    "Even mighty ones fall!"
    "Precision and power!"
    "We could have been friends."
    "Have at you!"
  • Pretty Boy: Kagetsu is a very pretty man with a fairly androgynous face.
  • Rebellious Princess: A Rare Male Example, he left home because he could not resist the urge to see the world and live independently.
  • Recurring Element: Kagetsu fills quite a few of these:
    • Kagetsu best-fits the "Navarre" archetype among Engage's roster. In the story sense, he's a vagrant swordsman serving a foreign land to initially oppose you, before joining your side on behalf of a single character. Gameplay-wise, he's a critical-hit-focused swordsman with high Speed and notable Strength who is first fought as an enemy, though his joining time is rather late for the role. Other "Navarres" include Ayra, Mareeta, Rutger, Guy, and Joshua. Though unlike the other Navarres, you can't persuade him to defect from the opposing army; instead, he's an automatic recruitment a few chapters after appearing as an enemy twice.
    • He also has unique speech quirks, like Petra and Athena.
    • As the prince of Pale Sands who keeps his royal lineage a secret, he's Engage's answer to the "secret noble" or "Jeorge" archetype, similar to Raven or Lewyn.
    • On a meta level, he also continues the trend of series superfan Takehito Koyasu providing his talents to every entry with voice acting.
  • Redemption Demotion: He's one level higher when encountered as a miniboss in chapter 9 compared to when he's recruited. Zigzagged in that his actual stats are significantly better when he's recruited.
  • Samurai Ponytail: He has a folded ponytail, and his endgame ephitet is the Onigiri Samurai.
  • Tender Tears: In his A-Support with Zelkov, Kagetsu is so overwhelmed with emotion upon being told that Ivy and Zelkov had planned to celebrate the anniversary of Kagetsu joining Ivy's service that he cries tears of joy. Kagetsu tries to hide it before they see Ivy, but Zelkov tells him that she'd probably enjoy getting to see that side of him.
  • Trademark Favorite Food: Onigiri. It's his symbol in the Ally Notebook, part of his endgame ephitet, the Ally Notebook states that he eats more of it than any other ally, he mentions it in one of his selection lines when damaged, and his Forging Bonds accessory in Heroes is... well, take a wild guess.
  • Undying Loyalty: To Ivy. When Ivy is ordered to hold off the Divine Dragon's army in what is effectively a suicide mission, she tries to dismiss Kagetsu, but he and Zelkov remain by her side anyway. Though unlike his fellow retainer who more or less sees being Ivy's retainer as just a job, Kagetsu's loyalty comes from the fact that he genuinely values Ivy as a friend.
  • Useless Superpowers: Has the ability to see the future, but he can only see things like the weather and what people are going to eat, rather than anything important. According to his 5* Level 40 conversation in Heroes, he has this ability because his mother is a priestess.
  • Walking the Earth: Kagetsu hails from a closed-off region of Solm called Pale Sands. Wanting to see what the world had in store, he set off on an adventure which ultimately landed him in Ivy's service.
  • Wide-Eyed Idealist: In comparison to his gloomy companions, Kagetsu is enduringly positive and optimistic, almost never expressing any form of hatred or malice. In particular, he cares very deeply about friendship, and considers himself friends with pretty much everyone he meets.

Rosado is a royal knight from Elusia, and Hortensia's retainer and friend. He tries to live his life to the fullest by pursuing all things cute and pretty.

His personal skill, Stunning Smile, reduces an enemy male unit's Avoid by -20 during combat with Rosado.

  • Ambiguously Gay: Despite conforming to many Camp Gay stereotypes, Rosado's sexual preferences are never made clear due to the game's lack of emphasis on romance, and his S-Supports with either gender of Alear are platonic in the English version.
  • Badass Adorable: He fights on a wyvern decorated with ribbons with an axe, and loves to look adorable doing so.
  • Beware the Nice Ones: He's a sweet and charming guy to almost everyone he meets, even enemies. Just don't do anything to hurt Hortensia or make her sad, or he becomes a terror, and he always sports a nasty scowl when preparing to attack.
"How DARE you make Hortensia sad!"
  • Coordinated Clothes: His clothing matches the coloration of his wyvern, as well as the ribbons he's attached to it, and he's even styled his hair with buns that resemble wyvern horns.
  • Curtains Match the Windows: His hair and eyes are the same shade of silvery-blue gradient into a light pink.
  • Dude Looks Like a Lady: He looks pretty feminine, has long hair, and most of his costumes feature such elements as skirts or stockings.
  • Even the Guys Want Him: His personal skill, Stunning Smile, explicitly only works on male enemies implying they're taken by his appearance and mannerisms making it harder for them to avoid his attacks.
  • Expository Pronoun: Uses the very masculine, assertive ore, contrasting with his feminine appearance and bubbly demeanor.
  • Expy: Of Chitose. They’re both the subordinates of young children, and are guys who are obsessed with cute things. They’re Wholesome Crossdressers, and their ultimate goal is to become the world's cutest boy.
  • Fashionable Asymmetry: His Somniel outfit has him wearing a half-skirt, along with stockings at different lengths and differently-colored shoes on each leg (thigh-high with a dark purple shoe on his left and calf-high with a bright pink shoe on his right).
  • The Gift: Plenty of characters are astonished at Rosado's inexplicably boundless optimism and seemingly effortless charm, even though Rosado himself doesn't think anything of it beyond simply doing what he likes to the best of his ability.
  • Girly Bruiser: A male example. He loves to look cute and pretty all while fighting on top of a wyvern donning ribbons.
  • Heroic Seductress: Male example. His personal skill, Stunning Smile, decreases the avoid of male enemy units by 20. The idea likely being that his feminine appearance and bold embracing of it confuses male opponents and inhibits their ability to avoid his attacks.
  • Magikarp Power: Rosado joins as a Master of None, despite his excellent starting class (flying with access to multi-range weaponry) and his decently-high starting level. Even on Normal Mode, his Strength is a bit too low to make quick work of anything by himself (at least in his joining chapter), while his Defense is a bit too low to tank hits consistently. Fortunately Rosado has rather good growth rates, including a tie for the highest (non-DLC) Strength rate in his personal list, and even a decent Magic rate if you want to switch him to Griffon Knight (for Staves) or Mage Knight (for Tomes).
  • Meaningful Name: "Rosado" means "pink" in Spanish. The colour pink is typically associated with cuteness, femininity and queerness, all of which Rosado has in spades.
  • Narcissist: Probably the most narcissistic of his trio; while Hortensia and Goldmary act showy for a reason and have lower self-confidence than they'd like to let on, Rosado genuinely thinks he's the best thing since sliced bread. He still cares about others, though, so it's not all about him.
  • Nice Guy: He's very friendly and outgoing to his allies, including Mauvier, who'd tried to kill him and Goldmary for stealing the Ring of the Azure Twins. Even when fought as an enemy, he's polite and charming.
  • Ojou Ringlets: At the ends of his long hair.
  • The Pollyanna: Very cheerful and optimistic, and wants to live his life to the fullest.
  • Pre-Mortem One-Liner:
    "I've had enough!"
    "Are you ready?"
    "Give it up!"
    "Cute AND strong!"
  • Pretty Boy: He's a handsome man with very feminine and even cute features.
  • Proud Beauty: He constantly reminds others of how cute he is, often getting on their nerves. In his supports with Fogado, he gets uncharacteristically upset at the prospect of not being considered the cutest.
  • Queer Colors: While Rosado identifies as a man, his attire solely consists of women's outfits, he has stereotypically feminine interests, and he may be Otherworldly and Sexually Ambiguous. His hair color is cyan blue with white and pink streaks — the color scheme of the trans pride flag.
  • Really Fond of Sleeping: One of Rosado's hobbies, according to the Ally Notebook, is napping. Seadall even comes across him taking a nap in their B-support.
  • Recurring Element:
    • Rosado continues the trend of feminine pretty boys like Lucius, Libra, and Forrest before him.
    • Rosado also follows Cherche's footsteps in being a retainer to a figure of nobility who is a wyvern rider and dotes on said wyvern as if they are the most precious and adorable pet.
  • Strong Family Resemblance: According to one of his castle lines in Heroes, Rosado greatly resembles his father.
  • Undying Loyalty: He's not officially Hortensia's retainer but he and Goldmary insisted on sticking with her when the war started. When he believes Hortensia got captured by Alear's forces he even turns traitor alongside Goldmary just so he can get a chance to rescue her.
  • Vocal Dissonance: He has a deeper and more masculine voice in the English voiceover, courtesy of Brian Anderson, than his feminine appearance would suggest.
  • Weaksauce Weakness: Have a problem with Rosado? Just blow him out of the sky, or use an arrow! As usual for enemy fliers, this is the standard protocol when dealing with him as an enemy in the earlier chapters, but once you have him, you'll have to keep this weakness in mind; the chapter he joins in has multiple Bow Knights armed with magic arrows, who will make short work of him even in Normal Mode, and even while he's Engaged.
  • Wholesome Crossdresser: Since Rosado's in-game model even uses female assets, he wears outfits designated for female units, which applies to both the custom Somniel outfits and generic class outfitsnote  if changed from his starting Wyvern Knight class. His default armor also has a frilly skirt, and his Somniel outfit is an off-the-shoulder midriff-baring shirt with matching skirt and stockings, and high heels.

    Goldmary

Birthday: 7/18

Class: Hero

Elegant Talent

A royal knight from Elusia, and Hortensia's retainer and friend. At first glance she gives the impression of being demure, but loves herself and can act brazenly and be bold with her words.

Her personal skill, Disarming Sigh, reduces an enemy male unit's Accuracy by -20 during combat with Goldmary.

  • Action Fashionista: Just like her liege and fellow retainer, one of Goldmary's likes in the Ally Notebook is fashion, and she's highly capable in battle.
  • Apologizes a Lot: Goldmary will often make a show of "apologizing" to people in ways that are clearly bragging, like apologizing to Hortensia for the "inconvenience" caused by all the gentleman callers she gets.
  • Attention Whore: It's quite clear that Goldmary wants everyone to compliment and pay attention to her, and will do anything to grab someone's attention, including screaming like she's in danger or making others delicious meals.
  • Bathing Beauty: She's fond of bathing at hot springs (which are supposedly common in Elusia) and considers it a great way to de-stress.
  • Big-Breast Pride: The Japanese script has her bragging that her large breasts are one of her more attractive features.
  • Bitch in Sheep's Clothing: She tries to present herself as a demure, sensitive Shrinking Violet, but her real personality is very self-centered. Downplayed, because even though she is selfish, she's still a heroic character at heart.
  • Buxom Beauty Standard: The Japanese script has Emblem Lucina express admiration towards Goldmary's "voluptuous figure." Her Japanese supports with Etie likewise have her say that voluptuous bodies like hers are considered the most attractive to men.
  • Compliment Fishing: When she gets praised by any of the other characters, she acts bashful before immediately asking them to continue.
  • Feminine Women Can Cook: She's a domestically-focused woman enjoys and is good at cooking.
  • Girly Bruiser: She's a Girly Girl who doesn't look or dress like it, but she's a Hero whose defensive skills make her a Stone Wall.
  • Head-Turning Beauty: She's considered to be incredibly attractive, to the point it translates into gameplay, as her personal skill Disarming Sigh will lower the accuracy of male enemies because they're too charmed by her to concentrate properly.
  • Heroic Seductress: Her personal skill, Disarming Sigh, decreases the hit of male enemy units by 20. The idea likely being that her sweet voice makes it hard for men to focus when attacking her. Camilla actually approves of her style of combat in their Bond conversation, acknowledging how Goldmary is right to get any advantage she can in a fight.
  • Holding Hands: In the English version of her A support with Etie, the two of them hold each other's hands.
  • Inferiority Superiority Complex: She reveals in her A-Support with Alear the reason for her narcissistic behavior. She was excessively coddled as a child, raised being treated as if she was the most beautiful, wonderful person in the world, only to eventually leave home to live at an academy and find out there were others who were more popular, capable, etc. than her. This did a serious number on her self-confidence, which she dealt with by developing a strong perfectionist streak and a desire to make sure everyone she knows acknowledges her. This of course leads to equally extreme sadness if she feels she has failed to impress those around her.
  • Jerk with a Heart of Gold: She's a total Narcissist who pretends to be demure for the sake of appearing above everyone else, but some of her supports do show that she is capable of being empathetic to others. She also greatly cares for Hortensia, being one of the few people she's genuinely sweet and kind to.
  • Lost in Translation: In the Japanese version, it's made clear that Goldmary is carefully maintaining her image to attract a man into proposing to her, and not just for popularity. This explains her outwardly-displayed enjoyment for cooking and cleaning, and adds impact to her A-support with Alear and her later Love Confession to them; apparently she either never thought to go looking on her own, or feared letting her desperation slip.
  • Lovable Alpha Bitch: Goldmary is quite arrogant, as she frequently acts like she is on top of the world and deserves all of its attention. However, she still cares deeply about her friends, and will do anything to protect those she cares about.
  • Love Confession: Gives one to Alear if she is chosen for the Pact Ring. Notably, she says it before Alear even reveals they intend to give her the ring.
  • Magically Inept Fighter: Her personal Magic growth is a mere 5%, no better than the units rolling with a 0% growth.
  • Ms. Fanservice: Along with Zelestia, she ties as the most voluptuous of the playable characters (having a 220% modifier in the game data for her bust with the other women at 200% or less), and she is quite open to using those good looks to get the attention of others.
  • Muscle Angst: In the Japanese version of her A Support with Etie, Goldmary admits that she wants to tone up a bit to get a more muscular body like Etie's.
  • Narcissist: While she tries to hide with false modesty, she has a very high opinion of herself. The times she's talking down about herself are often her fishing for compliments to feed her ego. In her B-Support with Yunaka she even gets distracted admiring her own smile in a plate's reflection.
  • Passive-Aggressive Kombat: Should she fight Alear in their first meeting she'll brazenly note that up close they're "only half as captivating" as she thought.
  • Pre-Mortem One-Liner:
    "What's the point of you?"
    "Don't make me angry!"
    "So sorry..."
    "You can die now."
  • Proud Beauty: She is proud of her feminine charms to an almost narcissistic extent, to the point of openly assuming the male Emblems will develop feelings for her. She outright feels insulted if people around her do not exhibit signs of finding her attractive.
  • Screw This, I'm Outta Here: Her retreat as an enemy unit is treated like this, with her sounding thoroughly done as she remarks "You're horrible. That's it... I'm leaving."
  • Sexy Backless Outfit: Downplayed, but her default outfit exposes a small amount of her back.
  • Shameless Fanservice Girl: Her C-Support with Framme has her almost stripping down on the spot to take an outdoor bath in a hot spring they happened upon, but Framme finds the idea to be outrageously unmodest and puts a stop to it by telling her to Please Put Some Clothes On. Goldmary explains that she has little body modesty due to growing up in a village near a hot spring where casually bathing in front of others was normal.
  • Shrinking Violet: Subverted. She tries to act demure and shy, but she has no shortage of self-esteem and can be quite brazen when she wants to be. Framme even notes during their C-Support that she was wrong to think Goldmary was shy after the latter showed no issue with disrobing in front of Framme.
  • Stone Wall: Her offensive capabilities aren't impressive but she joins with a very high defense of 20, and her base defense growth is higher than Louis.
  • Sugary Malice: Her soft and gentle demeanor doesn't change even when she brags about how her presence makes the rest of the army obsolete.
  • Undying Loyalty: She isn't officially Hortensia's retainer. Before the war started they were just friends at the academy, but she and Rosado insisted on accompanying Hortensia, and later show their willingness to betray Elusia just to get a chance at rescuing her. In her A-support with Hortensia she also mentions that she wants to stay with Hortensia even after the war is over.
  • Verbal Tic: She has such a habit of leading her Condescending Compassion with "I'm sorry if/I'm sorry that..." that it's basically her Character Catchphrase.

    Anna

Birthday: 6/8

Class: Axe Fighter > Warrior/Berserker (Main Story), Axe Fighter > Berserker (Fell Xenologue)

Voiced by: Saori Seto (Japanese), Monica Rial (English)

https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/annafe17portrait.png

A merchant-in-training. It seems she's traveling around each country in search of treasures that can be sold for a high price.

Her personal skill, Make a Killing, gives Anna a percentage-based chance (equal to her Luck) of stealing 500 gold from an enemy unit that she defeats.

  • Adaptational Nice Guy: This incarnation of Anna isn't as cutthroat when it comes to business, and while she can be a bit haughty (she asks people to call her "Lady Anna"note  and gets fussy when they don't), she's a nice person otherwise. This is actually similar to how Anna was portrayed prior to Fire Emblem: Awakening.
  • Adorably Precocious Child: Her determination to become a great merchant and insistence on being called Lady Anna both point in this direction.
  • Badass Adorable: Contrasting with other incarnations of Anna, this Anna is much younger than usual being much more childish and cutesy without losing any of her skills in combat.
  • Black Comedy: She utters a business pun regarding her own defeat, even in Classic mode.
"Looks like I'm in the red!"
  • Breaking Old Trends: This Anna is the first one to be a child instead of an adult and an apprentice merchant instead of an experienced one like the others. She's also the first Anna to not be voiced by Karen Strassman in the English dub.
  • Character Tic: Just like every other Anna, this Anna does the signature pose of resting her finger against her face.
  • Curtains Match the Window: She has red eyes to match her red hair.
  • Don't Call Me "Sir": Inverted.
"'Anna' is just so formal. you can call me 'Lady Anna' instead!"
  • Free-Range Children: Deconstructed. Anna has actually lost her family in her free-range pursuit to become a merchant, and just thinking of them puts her out of the adventuring mood. Fortunately they're in Elusia, and not in one of the countless worlds with adult Annas.
  • Hidden Depths: At first she paints her situation as that of any other lost child with a mundane merchant family. However, various bond conversations with Emblems (many of whom note her resemblance to the Anna they have memory of knowing) reveal she is well aware of a lot more about the Fire Emblem multiverse and her place in it than most other characters. She doesn't know many specifics admittedly, like the names of places in other worlds, but she is aware that other Annas live in them, and that they are all (somehow) her sisters rather than simply other universe's versions of her.
  • Intrepid Merchant: She travels around the continent to search for the treasures she intends to sell.
  • I Will Find You: She joins Alear's group both to expand her business model and to find her missing family. If she survives to the end of the game, she succeeds in reuniting with them!
  • Kid Hero: According to datamining, she fights alongside the Divine Dragon at the age of 11.
  • Little Miss Con Artist: Her personal skill, Make a Killing, gives her a chance (equal to her luck stat) to steal 500 gold from any enemy she defeats. Outside of gameplay, she subverts this in that she's quite fair with her prices and business model, as seen in her Support with Framme. After all, what self-respecting Anna would ever give discounts?
  • Magic Knight: Anna's suggested promotion to Warrior lets her use the Radiant Bow, putting her high Magic growth (50%) to good use. There's also the Hurricane Axe, but she's not quite stocky enough to use it well.
  • Magically Inept Fighter: Subverted. Despite Anna primarily being skewed towards physical classes, her magic growth is always going to be higher than her strength growth even with the class bonuses.
  • Mythology Gag: During the end credits is an image of Anna reuniting with her family. The two family members greeting her are dressed like the playable Annas in Awakening and Fates. note
  • Organ Drops: Anna has a Luck-based chance to get 500 (extra) Gold from whatever unit she kills, which is incidentally a more-valuable skill at difficulty levels where she's tougher to train. Ironically, her starting class and its Master Seal promotions have the lowest Luck cap (a mere 24), and therefore the lowest maximum chance of harvesting Gold; reclassing with a Second Seal can bring the cap up as high as 39, albeit with significant use of multiple Emblem Rings for the necessary proficiencies.
  • Pint-Sized Powerhouse: Anna's starter class is an Axe Fighter, meaning she carries a rather large weapon as her weapon of choice and can still fight efficiently despite her small size.
  • The Pirates Who Don't Do Anything: Anna repeatedly claims to be a merchant, but she never actually sells anything to anyone. Somewhat Justified though, since she's just a kid training to be a merchant note
  • Pre-Mortem One-Liner:
    "A little product demo!"
    "One strike, half off!"
    "Slashing more than prices!"
    "No window shoppers!"
  • Recurring Element: Anna reflects the more-traditional "Est" archetype from games that didn't have super-trainees, as a youthful and eager character who is notably under-leveled for when she joins but fills (or refills) an important role when trained. Examples include Coipre, Zeiss, Nino, L'Archael, and the eponymous Est. She does join quite early for an Est, though.
  • Supreme Chef: Anna is the only character other than Bunet capable of cooking an SS ranked dish.
  • Wise Beyond Their Years: She is only 11 years old but is a great merchant who knows how to make a profit. Some of the adults are astonished that someone so young is so good at business.

Thunder Sage

An Elusian scholar, and the retainer of King Hyacinth's older brother.

His personal skill, Weapon Insight, gives Lindon an extra +20 Critical chance if he's wielding a lower-ranked weapon than his opponent in combat.

  • Cool Old Guy: He's a warm and easygoing old man.
  • *Crack!* "Oh, My Back!": Implied; if Lindon is low on health in battle, he might say this when selected.
  • Critical Hit Class: His personal skill, Weapon Insight, boosts his critical rate by 20 if he wields a weapon that has a lower proficiency rank requirement than the enemy's weapon.
  • Guide Dang It!: Lindon can be recruited by having Alear, Ivy, or Hortensia talk to him, which is easy to achieve. However, since he is the only recruitable enemy in the entire game (as all other characters that appear as enemies join you automatically), and the game does not state that some enemies can be recruited, recruiting him is also easy to overlook, unless you catch sight of the little speech bubble icon next to him when moving Alear, Ivy, or Hortensia, or actually paying attention to the dialogue where he bemoans how fallen Elusia became. As a result, it is possible to accidentally kill him without realizing it beforehand.
  • The Lost Lenore: He has a wife who had since passed.
  • Late Character Syndrome: Lindon's personal skill is one of the most unique skills in the game, probably to incentivize at least trying him out; he's your seventh Tome-user (eighth if you promoted Jean), after all, and your sixth Staff-user (ninth if you promoted Celine, Chloe, and Citrinne). He also fills the series' long-running role of replacement Mage/healer, since those kinds of units tend to die easily, but that paints his average stats in a somewhat-worse light if you haven't lost everyone else.
  • Lava Is Boiling Kool-Aid: Lindon calls lava "red water" while commenting on Chapter 23's setting, indicating that he has absolutely no experience with the stuff. Indeed, the volcanoes had been underwater for a thousand years, and the only other volcanic region in Elyos is on a little-known island behind Firene.
  • Mad Scientist: Downplayed, but Lindon's eagerness for experimentation frequently makes him heedless of the risks of inflicting pain or starting fires.
  • Mundane Utility: He has a lot of interest in figuring out how to use attack magic for this, namely to cook food. The results are rather... unreliable.
  • Please Kill Me if It Satisfies You: In his B-support with Saphir, after she talks about the massacre she barely survived as a child by Elusian soldiers, he tells her if she thinks it will bring her satisfaction then he is fine with her killing him. Saphir is naturally freaked out to the point that she walks right out of the conversation. In the A-support they later talk about it, Lindon feeling guilty for participating in the war that killed her village even if he didn't kill them. Saphir tells him holding on to hatred of all those in Elusia will just continue the bloodshed, and that he is not to blame.
  • Pre-Mortem One-Liner:
    "Begin the experiment!"
    "Target sighted, attack!"
    "Let's see what happens!"
    "Don't you feel foolish?"
  • Science Hero: Apart from being a sage, he is also a scientist and researcher, and can often be found conducting experiments in the Somniel. His support with Mauvier even has him attempt to create popcorn by casting Elthunder on a corn cob.
  • Shock and Awe: He's a bit too obsessed with thunder tomes. Aside from his epithet being "Thunder Sage", he joins the party with a Thoron tome, tries to make popcorn with Elthunder in his supports with Alear, and he reacts to bad food by saying to cook it with Elthunder. And if he ends up on cooking duty, the player will find that he's not kidding.
  • Shut Up, Hannibal!: Gets one against Abyme, the boss of the chapter in which he's recruited, if he fights her.
    Abyme: You betrayed us!
Lindon: I fight to restore Elusia. You fight for its decline. Which of us is truly on the wrong side?
  • Together in Death: His solo ending mentions he eventually joined his dead wife.
  • Undying Loyalty: To the royal family, and he easily defects to Alear's army once he learns Princess Ivy is alive.
