Subpages cleanup: Complete Monster

Go To

During the investigation of recent hollers in the Complete Monster thread, it's become apparent to the staff that an insular, unfriendly culture has evolved in the Complete Monster and Magnificent Bastard threads that is causing problems.

Specific issues include:

  • Overzealous hollers on tropers who come into the threads without being familiar with all the rules and traditions of the tropes. And when they are familiar with said rules and traditions, they get accused (with little evidence) of being ban evaders.
  • A few tropers in the thread habitually engage in snotty, impolite mini-modding. There are also regular complaints about excessive, offtopic "socializing" posts.
  • Many many thread regulars barely post/edit anywhere else, making the threads look like they are divorced from the rest of TV Tropes.
  • Following that, there are often complaints about the threads and their regulars violating wiki rules, such as on indexing, crosswicking, example context and example categorization. Some folks are working on resolving the issues, but...
  • Often moderator action against thread regulars leads to a lot of participants suddenly showing up in the moderation threads to protest and speak on their behalf, like a clique.

It is not a super high level problem, but it has been going on for years and we cannot ignore it any longer. There will be a thread in Wiki Talk to discuss the problem; in the meantime there is a moratorium on further Complete Monster and Magnificent Bastard example discussion until we have gotten this sorted out.

Update: The new threads have been made and can be found here:

Please see the Frequently Asked Questions and Common Requests List before suggesting any new entries for this trope.

IMPORTANT: To avoid a holler to the mods, please see here for the earliest date a work can be discussed, (usually two weeks from the US release), as well as who's reserved discussion.

When voting, you must specify the candidate(s). No blanket votes (i.e. "[tup] to everyone I missed").

No plagiarism: It's fair to source things, but an effortpost must be your own work and not lifted wholesale from another source.

We don't care what other sites think about a character being a Complete Monster. We judge this trope by our own criteria. Repeatedly attempting to bring up other sites will earn a suspension.

What is the Work

Here you briefly describe the work in question and explain any important setting details. Don't assume that everyone is familiar with the work in question.

Who is the Candidate and What have they Done?

This will be the main portion of the Effort Post. Here you list all of the crimes committed by the candidate. For candidates with longer rap sheets, keep the list to their most important and heinous crimes, we don't need to hear about every time they decide to do something minor or petty.

Do they have any Mitigating Factors or Freudian Excuse?

Here you discuss any potential redeeming or sympathetic features the character has, the character's Freudian Excuse if they have one, as well as any other potential mitigating factors like Offscreen Villainy or questions of moral agency. Try to present these as objectively as possible by presenting any evidence that may support or refute the mitigating factors.

Do they meet the Heinousness Standard?

Here you compare the actions of the Candidate to other character actions in the story in order to determine if they stand out or not. Remember that all characters, not just other villains, contribute to the Heinousness Standard

Final Verdict?

Simply state whether or not you think the character counts or not.

[tup] to Doctor Krieger.

I'll also give a [tdown] to Owens.

Okay now for my next Prime Suspect candidate (and this one thankfully isn’t long), we got to Season 2’s “Operation Nadine.”

Recalled from a convention, Jane put in charge of a minefield investigation following a body of a young woman being found in a predominately West Indian community where several recent scandals ensure that tensions are running high. Initially assuming it is the body of Simone Cameron, a local teenager who disappeared two years previously (one of the aforementioned scandals being was accusations of the local police not caring enough to properly investigate) Jane quickly discovers that she’s investigating an older murder.

And her path in uncovering the answer, leads her to onto the trail of a particularly horrible predator. I give Jason Reynolds.

Who Is he:

On the surface Jason seems to be just an unimportant but friendly, handsome charming young man who spends his time between London and the coast, visiting his family and working as a seaside photographer.

However, underneath this façade Jason is really a hot tempered, vicious bigot and a dangerous sexual predator.

What Does He Do:

Original from Margate, Jason was an unremarkable individual growing up, dismissed by his teachers as a layabout and a jack the lad, his only standout trait being that from an early age he possessed a love for photography. However, this seemingly innocent hobby covered a much darker nature, with Jason’s twisted perversions manifesting themselves in a fascination with controlling his models. Following his mother moving down to London to be closer to her brother Steven Halley, after she left Jason stayed on.

In 1986 whilst sixteen, while visited Margate he seduced a fellow teen called Miriam, leading her on for several months he convinced her to pose for him, the photo’s growing increasingly sexually explicit. Then when he returned to London, he took her with him having her stay in his uncle’s basement. Miriam stayed for two months, with Jason attempting to pass her onto his mates and having to sleep with his uncle when she couldn’t pay the rent. Before coming to her senses she ran back home, to Jason’s utter apathy.

In late August that year Jason’s neighbour and classmate from school Tony Allen brought Joanne Fagunwa, a runaway teen he’d met at a reggae music convention back to the house (Tony’s father actually owned the house, and she needed a place to stay so he figured she could have the now empty basement). Returning home Jason stumbled on them as they were getting into it. The group then were interrupted by Tony’s thirteen year old sister Sarah who had been spying on him also arriving. Tony was naturally furious, but Jason managed to calm him down and charm them all into agreeing to stay. He then threw a sort of makeshift party on the spot handing out the alcohol and managed to convince both girls to doing a series of photo’s for him, in some very explicit possess.

Encouraging Tony to get with Joanne as the prospect aroused him, his directions kept getting more and more forceful that Joanne began to get scared and wanted to leave. Tony tried to get Jason to back off, but this just made him angry. Assaulting Joanne, Jason then broke a bottle and forced Tony to gag her with Sarah’s tights, then taking his belt he restrained her and holding the glass to her neck raped her right before the two of them.

Terrifying them into silence, he let them go and then proceeded to murder poor Joanne, hitting her so hard he actually shattered her skull. Afterwards Jason got his uncle to help him cover up the crime, with the two burying Joanne’s body in his garden and then paved over the ground.

The experience traumatised Tony for life, causing him to fall behind in school, constantly suffering recurring nightmares about being buried alive that left him with crippling claustrophobia out of guilt and eventually six years later caused him to commit suicide. Jason meanwhile carried on developing his love of photography, upgrading his equipment he even converting his uncle’s caravan into a studio, and then he struck upon a way to turn his hobby to make him some money.

For the next six years, his MO was to find naïve and impressionable teenagers on the sea front, going after girls as young as fourteen. Jason would charm and seduce them until she was so wrapped around his finger she agreed to pose for him. Roping her into doing increasingly explicit photos Jason would then sell them on as explicit pornography.

Taking advantage of them in their vulnerable state, Jason also took to raping the girls continuing to photograph himself and them whilst doing so (some of this he also sold to the more obscene buyers). Then afterwards he would simply discard them as he no longer needed them. Racking up a massive collection of victims all over the South Coast.

Introduced to the police during the investigation as simply Steven’s unassuming nephew, following his uncle giving a false confessional to police about him murdering Joanne (him being near death at the time), Jason broke into his flat hoping to find the incriminating photo’s he had given to his uncle, but was unable to find them and forced to retreat after Jane arrived.

Leaving London for his latest base by the sea, Jason went to ground turning his attention onto seducing his latest target. However, after it became clear the investigation was now after him, he briefly slipped back to London in the evening, where he began stalking Sarah Allen and Jane.

He then sent a series of recent photo’s he had taken of Sarah whilst she was naked to remind her he hadn’t forgotten about her, hoping to intimidate into silence. Likewise he also sent several pictures that seemingly implicated Jane having an affair with one of her officers to the tabloids, hoping to create a sufficiently embarrassing scandal during the tribunal investigating Tony’s suicide (as it had happened in police custody) that she would give up trying to find him.

Returning his full attention to his latest target, Jason bought her a bunch of clothing and even took her for dinner at a Chinese. Believing he overheard another patron say something about him behind his back, in a rage Jason attacked the man and was chucked out. Taking her back to his caravan, he restrained and proceeded to rape her, photographing the whole experience.

However, undeterred Jane managed to track him to the base. Jason tried to run for it across the beech, perused by Sergeant Oswalde (with Jason hurling racial slurs at him every step of the way) tripping on the wet sand, he was arrested. Jane likewise persuaded Sarah to make a statement, ensuring he would go down for Joanne’s murder.

Any Freudian Excuse or Redeeming Traits:

Okay a few things to cover, but nothing I feel holds up under scrutiny.

As I said Jason initially seems a charming, laid back and friendly young man. Even reassuring his mother the police are just doing their job during an informal interview with the pair relating to Steven. However, it becomes clear once the focus turns on him, that it’s entirely an act and his real self is vicious and predatory.

Whilst visiting her at the time of the episode, Jason’s mother admits he honestly has no real relationship with her and is no real son of hers, with her having not the slightest idea what Jason really does or where he is for most of the year.

Now the only real wrinkle is his relationship with his uncle. Now Steven certainly does loves his nephew considering he helped him cover up Joanne’s murder and attempted to take the blame for the murder. But whilst Jason certainly gets along with his uncle (such as regularly sharing his pornography with him), he doesn’t show any clear sign he cares about him.

Jason initially seems to, with us being introduced to him bringing his uncle his lunch and seemingly worrying about the police interviewing a sick man, and likewise seems shocked at his uncle’s shocking “confession” with him seemingly utterly shocked, admitting to Jane he's always been close to his uncle and now its clear he didn’t really know him after all.

However, all that was back during his nice guy act, with it being revealed his entire reaction was nothing more than a performance designed to throw the police off the sent. And once he drops the act, all the signs he was previously displaying also disappear. Jason doesn’t even mentions his uncle again, not even giving a second thought about running of, despite knowing his uncle is near death.

There is no grieving or thoughts towards him, Jason immediately goes back to protecting himself and preying on another vulnerable teen. He doesn’t even react after his uncle dies.

Thus it seems his supposed care was just another part of his act.

Heinous Standard:

As an utterly brutal serial rapist who preys upon vulnerable teenagers, I think Jason manages to stand out. It’s not confirmed exactly how many women Jason has raped, but we see from his darkroom and the photo’s the police find, that it potentially could be somewhere in the several dozens. He literally has walls of photographs of different women.

Now he perhaps has done less than Parker-Jones in terms of sex crimes. But really the two’s resources are so drastically different it’s not really fair to compare them. Parker-Jones is a wealthy, powerful man with decades of access to multiple vulnerable children and in present runs a paedophile ring.

Jason by contrast is an working class, not especially bright young man with no resources beyond his own charms.

Their is likewise the Serial Killer from the very first episode who at least raped some of his victims as well as imprisoning, torturing and murdering them. But all together he had six victims over a span of eight years. Jason who has been active for less time, is implied to have him well beaten.

As these are the only sex offenders in the series (ignoring Janovick, who's a bit of different kettle of fish), him standing out shouldn’t be an issue.

Conclusion:

Not as much to talk about as my previous candidates, but as an utterly vile serial rapist with an unknown number of victims, I think Jason Reynolds is a keeper.

Still what do you think?

Ok so months ago, I did effortposts for two of the characters for the Hearts of Iron 4 mod Red Flood and they were upvoted, their entries are:

  • Complete Monster: The leadership of Avant-Garde France is responsible for many horrific atrocities committed against its own population and across Europe in their desire to achieve "speed". These two are the worst of them:
    • Charles Nungesser is the leader of the Escadron, a cult that believes France can accelerate best through uniting the nation in a machine-like collective devoted to technological progress at any and all costs. If he gets into power, he will impose a militaristic machine cult devoted to stamping out all individuality in France, with perpetual militarism seen as a "cure" for the various "diseases" that plagues the nation. Perceiving women to be one of the supposed diseases plaguing France, Nungesser enacts laws that enforces a homoerotic spartan style lifestyle where women are consigned to become sex slaves whose only purpose in life is to give birth to children. In addition, Nungesser takes measures to stamp out all individuality in France by subsuming all individuality into a cult devoted solely to speed and technological progress, even going as far to destroy French as a language to facilitate the creation of the cult of Accelerationism.
    • Georges Bataille is the leader of the Acephale, which seeks to create an aristocracy devoted to mystical enlightenment through sensual pleasure. If Bataille gets into power he poisons Antonin Artaud and seizes control for himself. He then establishes a society dominated by a hedonistic aristocracy that practices everything from human sacrifice to cannibalism to pedophilia and rape as a means of achieving a higher consciousness. In order to provide the means for this aristocratic elite to sustain their lifestyle, he either funds wars around the world through a massive arms market, or sells off historical artifacts, endangered species and the entirety of French culture on the black market just so the aristocracy can continue to sustain this lifestyle.

Back then the mod had less content and the heinousness standard, so they'd qualify in the earlier build of the mod. There was an effort to cut them by another troper on the grounds that the developers had questionable sanity and that the mod is too over-the-top and filled to the brim with black comedy for a CM. This thread ruled otherwise, that the mod's setting is conductive to a CM, and the person that wanted to remove them changed their minds soon after.

However, a recent update that came out around 2.5 weeks ago(meaning I missed discussion date by a few days) has put the heinousness standard into question. It bascically introduces lore and content for a nation in India, namely the remnant of the British dominion of India.

Basically, we learn that Red Flood's incarnation of Winston Churchill is a very nasty person. He has taken his infamous IRL racism against Indian people Up To Eleven and suppresses every protest for independence with force and wanton use of poison gas; this leading to the collapse of British India. In his most horrific route he can fully implement Anglo supramacist racial theories and establish himself as the Supreme Leader of India. In this route he will instigate full-on Nazi style policies against Indians such as crushing nearby Indian warlords to not just retake India, but also prove British racial supremacy, force Indians to speak English, abandon Hinduism, and look to Churchill as the sole leader to guide India towards unification. Labour camps for dissenters, bullets for protestors, and much worse for those who actively fight Churchill.

Now if anyone is wondering if Red Flood!Churchill qualifies....unfortunately no. While he is very heinous in the backstory, in one route he can genuinely introduce democracy and free elections, dialing down the repression significantly. Now this is implied to be for opportunistic reasons, and him winning the elections will be seen as a fraud by the indians, leading to a coup by a even worse figure I will put up for discussion(fun fact: at one point said even worse figure was slated to appear in TNO until they decided to completely scrap their India lore). However, the fact that he can be saner in one route puts a damper into effortposting him.

That said, Churchill in his backstory and 2/3s of his routes and definitely the even worse figure(who not only breaks a couple of records, but is an horrifically insane Neo-Nazi in our reality on top of that) may put a damper in whether Bataille and Nungesser may qualify.

So what say you all? With Fascist!Churchill and the incarnation of the IRL Neo Nazi I will get to later blowing the heinousness standard to oblivion with the force of a Super Saiyan God hurling over 9000 spirit bombs, should we cut either one, or both of the current Red Flood CMs?

Yes to Reynolds.

By this point I'm quite convinced we can safely chop Red Flood's duo, too. When the setting is neck-deep in Refuge in Audacity and wading deeper it's time to take a nice, hard look at the standard and this is exactly what was done.

What is the work?

Cop Craft is an urban fantasy/police procedural anime streaming on Funimation

After losing his partner in the San-Teresa Metropolitan Police, Detective Sergeant Kei Matoba is paired against his will with a Semanian Knight of Mirvor named Tilarna Exedilica. As Kei and Tilarna learn to overcome their respective prejudices, an evil wizard named Zelada tries to exploit the prejudice of others to advance his own agenda.

Who is Zelada and what has he done?

Zelada initially poses as a subordinate of Dennis Elbaji, the latter being a Semanian criminal who traffics "fairy dust", a substance made from the "latena" of live fairies. Zelada demonstrates a bomb which uses a live fairy, turning the two police officers who investigate the scene into undead puppets for Zelada to control. At Elbaji's request, Zelada makes the corpses dance on the hood of a police cruiser before making them shoot each other. The blast radius for the next bomb is revealed to be 5 km, the size of a nuclear warhead.

As they are leaving the funeral of Rick Fury, Kei's late partner, Kei and Tilarna investigate the corpses in a nearby river, which leads them to Elbaji, and eventually Zelada. Unfortunately, Zelada escapes with the fairy who Tilarna was sent to find and recover, having exploited Police Chief Jack Roth's xenophobia. At that point, Kei recognizes Zelada as the man who slaughtered his platoon when Kei was in the Military.

From there, Zelada goes to the Forest Tower skyscraper, intending to amplify the blast radius and endanger thousands of lives. After a fight with Kei and Tilarna, Zelada drops off of the building to his apparent death. Before the bomb can go off, however, the fairy trapped inside the bomb sacrifices her own life to heal Kei from his injuries, and save both him and Tilarna.

At election time, Mayoral Candidate Kahns is assassinated by a latena influenced Semanian, and the duo suspect that Zelada was involved.

Eventually, after the assassination of another politician, Cole Mozeleemay, a reporter meets up with the duo, only for the group to be captured by enthralled FBI agents (not counting the crook who sold them out to Zelada).

The reporter is killed while the filthy Fed beats Kei up, until Kei snaps the guy's neck with his legs. Kei then shoots through a number of meatpuppets to get to Zelada, who is holding Tilarna, and making her listen to him rationalize his actions, something which Tilarna calls him out on. Zelada and the duo face off, with the latter two using sprinklers to make Zelada visible. Tilarna shoots Zelada with Kei's gun, while Kei uses Tilarna's sword to decapitate him.

Heinousness?

Zelada kills scores of people and turns them into meatpuppets, attempts to use a fairy dust bomb to turn anyone within a 5km radius into a meatpuppet, is shown to have massacred a platoon of military personnel, arranged the assassination of two politicians in order to incite violence between Semanians and Earthlings. Zelada is, for all intents and purposes, the primary antagonist of the series, or at least the first season, and establishes the standard thus farnote .

Dennis Elbaji captures fairies, processes them into fairy dust, and assists Zelada for his own gain. (I still haven't decided whether to effortpost him).

Marla Mozeleemay arranges her own husband's assassination, working in tandem with Zelada, exploits her husband's death, and the ensuing chaos, for her own political benefit. (Weegee is handling that discussion).

Cole Mozeleemay himself is a pervert who frequents brothels, but Marla is the real powerhouse between the two of them, and he is ineffectual.

FBI agent Ronald Chan sold out his own team to Zelada and is working with him, but Zelada is calling the shots.

Everyone else is just bog standard by comparison, or working for one of the above.

Mitigating Factors?

Zelada claims to be disgusted with the decadence of earthly culture, but Tilarna calls him out as nothing more than a Xenophobe.

Zelada is not morally compromised, and nothing he does has a tragic backstory.

Zelada is shown performing cruelty onscreen on a regular basis, while a pattern is established with every dead guy whose body he takes over; the effects of his actions are very much dwelled upon.

Verdict?

Contender.

  • Cop Craft Anime: Zelada is an extremist who uses acts of violence to incite hatred between humans and Semanians. Initially unseen, Zelada frequently uses the "latena" of fairies to kill others and enslave them as controlled corpses. Introduced posing as a subordinate of the smuggler Dennis Elbaji, Zelada demonstrates a prototype for a "fairy dust" bomb on two police officers. Confronted by San-Teresa Police Detectives Kei Matoba and Tilarna Exedilica—the former of whom recognizes Zelada for slaughtering his platoon when Kei was in the military—Zelada exploits their superior's xenophobia in order to escape to the roof of a skyscraper where he intends to amplify his bomb's blast radius. Seemingly dying by falling off the roof—and with his bomb having been defused—Zelada eventually reveals himself to still be alive, having arranged the assassination of two mayoral candidates in order to increase tensions between humans and Semanians. After capturing Kei and Tilarna, and killing a reporter who met up with them, Zelada claims to be acting in the best interest of the Semanians, but is called out for his xenophobia by Tilarna before Kei shows up to confront him.

Nine years later, Warlock orchestrates multiple crimes. When Nanatsuki, now a Detective, and his partner Shiori Ichinose, interfere in his machinations, Warlock has the explosives expert "B" plant bombs in three office buildings, using magic seals to amplify the blast radius, while distracting the bomb squad to prevent them from interfering. After Warlock's manipulations prompt B to attempt child murder as a sacrifice, Warlock has Nine personnel take a mall hostage, resulting in the deaths of multiple security personnel. When Special 7 engages the terrorists, Warlock sacrifices them to summon a dragon in an attempt to take out Special 7 and the hostages. In his final confrontation with Special 7, as well as the disgruntled Luka, Warlock proclaims that his power gives him license to do whatever he wants, before trying to eliminate the team.

Slight pothole change is all.
