Character pronoun and identity discussion

Go To

Thread created as a spin-off of an Ask The Tropers thread.

There have been some recurring problems when it comes to how to refer to a character due to them being potentially transgender, such as Yamato or Snapdragon, or has other circumstances that make their gender identity/pronouns unclear. While in the past each character has gotten their own dedicated thread, the latest problem when it comes to how to interpreted Bridget has raised an opinion that there should be more of a general thread discussing these topics in case any future problems come up. Preferably we should discuss one character at a time before moving up to the next character.

Queries about references to a character's deadname are also on-topic here.

Spoilers in the thread must be tagged.

As a rule of thumb, using they/them in cases where the character's gender is unclear is acceptable.

If someone disregards consensus that was established here, particularly if a character is clearly trans and someone is trying to deny that, it's something to report on Ask The Tropers rather than here.

Spoilers in this "Resolved characters" folder are unmarked.

It's a good fallback pronoun, since the character could be transfeminine nonbinary or genderfluid.

Usually don't post here, but since I'm familiar with RE, I'll add what I know. I was going to bring up the files in-game as a point towards using He/Him as that's how the character is referred to in-game. I'd be careful about leaning on the RE wiki too much as well, since it's also fan written.

ETA: was looking around to see if I could find any WoG for Morpheus but no luck so far.

Paging ~Sung Hwan since they are also familiar with the series.

I'm not familiar with the game. The main issue with what came up in that report was that a new account jumped into changing pronouns en masse on day one, which I and the other mods found suspicious. I told Amonimus (who reported the edits) to bring it up here in case it merits discussion, since it would be preferable to go through this thread instead of changing the character's pronouns unilaterally.

[up][up]that doesn't carry as much weight to me, because "he/him" is exclusively used pre-transformation, no pronouns are used post-transformation, and in-game materials strongly imply Morpheus identified as a woman at least to themselves.

Hmmmm, yeah, it seems like an interesting case. If they weren't given any explicit pronouns after transforming, then sounds like they/them does work best.

[up][up][up] Oh yeah I get it, definitely suspicious. I would've done the same thing bringing it to attention.

[up] As far as I can recall, yeah there's no pronouns used after the transformation and there's no in-game files or mentions of Morpheus in other media (the game was made non-canon) either. I was thinking about going the Recap route (or basically the suggestion Golden City Bird brought up) with He/Him and She/Her for the separate forms, although that might not be feasible since it’s the character page and not a bunch of recap pages.

Like with Snapdragon, using She/Her can be potentially confusing if the character isn't addressed as being female in-universe, and I don't think we should be inconsistent with pronoun usage on character sheets, unless there's some reason everyone would already know the character uses both pronouns (such as being canonically genderfluid).

Also like Snapdragon, I think sticking to the nice neutral They/Them makes the most sense with the info presented.

What are I supposed to make of Osana Najimi? I've seen conflicting reports as to whether they're a cis dude, enby, or trans. Has there been anything official about how they currently see themselves?

Alright, I'll wait. As for Morpheus, using neutral pronouns is probably the best option right now.

Is Morpheus's transformation meant to be seen as an intentional result, or an Emergency Transformation that just happens to turn Morpheus into a female monster? I can understand if Morpheus wanted a new body and the virus transformation is what they wanted, just wanted to check.

the virus supposedly transforms people according to their innermost desires, from what i read.

also, it's apparently called the TG Virus, which is an amusing coincidence at least.

IDK, what does Thanksgiving have to do with this discussion?

Yeah, if that's actually how it works then it does seem cut and dry that at the very least Morpheus doesn't identify as a man.

[up][up] That's even more incentive to use they/them until we get confirmation that Morpheus identifies as a woman.

I personally don't mind that.

Is them transforming counts as a spoiler btw? The work page is inconsistent on spoiler tags on that point. (Though the Characters page is spoilers off anyway)

[up] FWIW yes, because the transformation happens in the last 10-15 minutes of the game but spoilers off is spoilers off. smile

Moving on to the next character, Najimi's Ambiguous Gender is the entire point of the character. The work itself uses Najimi in place of a pronoun when one is required (or just writes around it;) we should follow that as much as possible.

I see. Making sure nothing had changed in the past 200+ chapters. So you literally use Najimi/Najimi?

I haven't watched the dub so I can't speak for it; my knowledge is from the manga (which I dropped a while ago) and sub. The sub played the pronoun dodging game, at least to the point I watched, which was before the dub existed so it may have since been Orwellian Retconned to match, if anyone cares to check. IIRC Netflix has done that before.
