Ambiguous Name (Alt names crowner 24 Sep 2020): The Missingno

The Missingno really needs a rename. People seem to think the Trope Namer making an appearance instantly qualifies as an example.

If Scrappy Doo makes an cameo in a work is that automatically The Scrappy? No.

If Starscream makes a cameo is that automatically The Starscream? No.

Is a character named Mary Sue guaranteed to be a Mary Sue? No.

The "Missingno" in Reset Bloodlines, Starter Squad and Atop The Fourth Wall (which I've had to pull three times already) are all Missingno In Name Only. I guarantee if they or this trope were named anything else, those examples would not have been added.

Glitch Character is already a redirect. Swapping the current name with that sounds like a good idea, unless someone comes up with something better.

Support the change to Glitch Character.

There also appears to be a redirect from Missingno that should be removed.

Hold on a minute. Doesn't the page state that items also count under this trope? Glitch Character would be too narrow.

Edit: Took a closer look at the description (I was tired when I made my previous post; I've slept since then), and yes, it is also for items. Because of that, I'm changing my vote from Glitch Character to Glitch Entity.

Maybe we could keep Glitch Character around as a redirect to Glitch Entity, and also make a new Glitch Item redirect.

I dunno... some part of me worries the name Glitch Entity would attract misuse of people adding characters that aren't glitches but have a glitchy aesthetic (E.G. the Starter Squad and Atop The Fourth Wall versions of Missingno.) and we'd be right back where we started.

Is this consensus?

I made a crowner in case there isn't already enough consensus. If there already is enough consensus, I figured the mods could just ignore the crowner.

I propose Glitch Sprite.

Glitch Sprite sounds perfect for what are currently labeled as "in-universe" examples; characters/items that aren't actually a glitch in the software, but have a glitchy aesthetic, such as Vanellope von Schweetz from Wreck-It Ralph or “not_intended” from BoxxyQuest: The Gathering Storm.

Glitch items (which would be covered by the Glitch Entity name, alongside glitch characters) don't always have associated sprites. Pokémon Red and Blue, which provided the current trope name, have plenty of glitch items, but most of them don't have associated sprites; they only have names (a lot of which are garbled text).

I also prefer Glitch Entity over Glitch Sprite for this trope, because the former covers non-visual examples and the latter implies any instance where a sprite becomes garbled regardless of a new entity being formed.
