Character pages are a large chunk of the wiki, but they're often filled with problems that don't get resolved. These problems include:

  • Zero Context Examples
  • Indentation problems, including bulleting tropes under supertropes or tropeslashing
  • Spoiler tag misuse
  • A lack of alphabetization
  • Empty character folders
  • Plagiarized character descriptions
  • Misused tropes, or tropes that don't belong on character pages
  • Broken or incorrect formatting
  • Subjective / Trivia trope mentions

Per How to Create a Character Page, character pages should only include tropes that describe the characters. These tropes should fall under Characterization Tropes or one of its related indexes, Unless they're recurring character traits (distinctive things that the character does repeatedly). If you're unsure what counts as a character trope, you can ask about that at Are These Character Tropes.

All characters must have at least one contextualized trope for their section or folder to be visible. If you find a character that has no contextualized tropes present, comment out the entire section and add this tag:

%% As per Administrivia/HowToCreateACharacterPage, every character must have at least one listed trope that's not a Administrivia/ZeroContextExample. All characters who don't meet this requirement have been commented out. Add more tropes or add more context to any existing ZCE tropes before uncommenting them.

@Twiddler That looks great!

Alright I've made 2 sandboxes merging the human characters into either an ally or antagonist folder, minus Drago's army since that was pushing 30k bytes.

Feedback would be appreciated.

[up][up] I see Sandbox. How To Train Your Dragon Films Human Allies lists both "Allies" and "Neutral Humans" — might "How To Train Your Dragon Films Human Allies And Neutrals" be a more fitting page title, then?

A potential complication that comes to mind is the blurring of categories — e.g. enemies turning to allies or vice versa. (This is more of a general concern with categorization than with these pages specifically. I am not familiar with the non-film parts of the franchise and so don't know how much of a potential issue it would be.)

Thanks for the feedback on the Harry Potter character template! One more thing I'm considering is reordering the Hogwarts houses to the order they're typically listed in canon — Gryffindor, Hufflepuff, Ravenclaw, Slytherin. The current order (Gryffindor, Slytherin, Ravenclaw, Hufflepuff) is kinda bugging me for how arbitrary it seems, haha. (I assume Slytherin is currently listed second because of their greater plot importance, but I have no idea about Ravenclaw/Hufflepuff.)

[up] I don't mind that name change for HTTYD

Also I think it's page determined but there's some villains listed on the respective page who even when noted to have a Heel–Face Turn are still on the "villains" page. And the antagonists who redeem themselves take a good few seasons each before they do.

I think the HP house order is due to:

  • Gryffindor being the one most the protagonists are in.
  • Slytherin for it's prominence.
  • Ravenclaw has a few noteworthy characters in it.
  • And... Hufflepuff just exists? Albeit with some minor reoccurring characters.

EDIT: From what I recall there's only 2 villains who go through a Face–Heel Turn for HTTYD. One's on the Hooligan page (Mildew) and the other has been a Bitch in Sheep's Clothing (Johann).

I dig the name changing for HTTYD stuff as well, Allies and Neutrals works nicely. And yeah, I'd say leave the likes of Alvin or Viggo on the Human antagonists page, while they eventually pull Heel–Face Turn maneuvers they're firmly villains for the majority of their time.

I could go either way on the Harry Potter ordering, but I do admittedly like the idea of listing it in the "canon listing" way as Twiddler mentioned.

Characters.Avengers Arena is a work-specific page for Marvel's Shared Universe characters and duplicates characters with example lists elsewhere.

My understanding is that if it's in the same continuity, unless it's somehow radically different, it shouldn't have its own example list.

I left a discussion page comment there months ago, but nobody's replied, so I'll make a start on revising it, signposting characters elsewhere and migrating tropes.

  • Yeah, the current Harry Potter order makes sense to me.
  • [up]Fine with that

I've mentioned this a couple times before, but now is my honest pitch: I'd like to do some merging on Characters.Sense 8. It's very oversplit, which may have been because the show was once an ongoing, expensive, ambitious production that the creators wanted to go on for five seasons. But it was cut short after two seasons and the Wrap It Up finale premiered almost four years ago, so it is unlikely to grow significantly going forward.

The moves I want to make are:

I agree with the Sense 8 sandbox, it looks much more in line with how the show flowed.

I would make one suggestion: please could you change "London, England" to "London, UK"?

A lot of live-action media character sheets have separate header bars for actors and foreign-language voice actors. Like

Portrayed by: Alan Rickman (films, adult), Alec Hopkins (teen), Benedict Clarke (child), Paul Bentall (Harry Potter and the Cursed Child, first West End run), Byron Jennings (Cursed Child, first Broadway run)

Voiced by: Claude Giraud (French), Carlos Segundo (Latin American Spanish, Philosopher's Stone, Order of the Phoenix and Half-Blood Prince), Rolando de Castro (Latin American Spanish, Chamber of Secrets and Goblet of Fire), César Monroy (Latin American Spanish, Prisoner of Azkaban), Jorge Badillo (Latin American Spanish, Deathly Hallows Part I), Sebastián Llapur (Latin American Spanish, Deathly Hallows Part II), Juan Fernández (European Spanish, Philosopher's Stone-Deathly Hallows Part Inote ), Juan Carlos Gustems (European Spanish, Deathly Hallows Parts I-IInote ; Catalonian, All films), Allan Lima (Brazilian Portuguese, Philosopher's Stone-Prisoner of Azkaban), Roberto Macedo (Brazilian Portuguese, Goblet of Fire-Half-Blood Prince), Jorge Vasconcelos (Brazilian Portuguese, "Deathly Hallows Part 1 and Part 2'')

Any suggestions on how to fit the "Voiced by" credits into a note?

I'd sneak the "other VA's" note in between the film actors and the stage actors, since those are the guys they're dubbing over.

Like so?

Portrayed by: Alan Rickman (films, adult), Alec Hopkins (teen), Benedict Clarke (child), foreign voice actors  Paul Bentall (Harry Potter and the Cursed Child, first West End run), Byron Jennings (Cursed Child'', first Broadway run)

Edit - huh, so notes can be nested. That's not wise.

How about, to get rid of the nested notes, we write it like this:

Juan Fernández (European Spanish, Philosopher's Stone-Deathly Hallows Part I (Domestic)), Juan Carlos Gustems (European Spanish, Deathly Hallows Parts I-II (International)); Catalonian, All films)

There's slight problem with the current RWBY franchise character page (Characters.RWBY) caused by the fact that the original show and the franchise page are both called "RWBY" with no embellishments or sub-titles.

The original show's character page has long been used to only trope the canon setting, with other works in the franchise having their own character pages. When the franchise page was created, the canon character page became the franchise's default character page. This leaves all the RWBY franchise character pages scattered across the site unlinked.

Someone has suggested solving the problem by making a hub character page for the franchise, from which all the different works can be indexed, including the canon. I like this idea because it'll also make it clear which works are canon and therefore share the same character page for troping (something that isn't currently that clear).

However, I don't really know how to go about creating a hub page from which all others link, especially if inbounds and redirects need to be accommodated. Is there any advice how to go about this? Or any advice on alternative ways to organise this?

The main issue I see is that none of the other subpages are formatted in such a manner, so reformatting the character page like that would require a massive cleanup effort to do the same to other subpages for consistency’s sake. Personally I think the best solution is to treat the current character hub as the hub for the show with links to character pages for other works in the franchise, but the pages themselves should remain separate.

That’s just my opinion though, so let’s see if anyone else has anything to add.

[up] That's the trigger for my question. The Other Media has only just been added by a troper who has pointed that RWBY is not doing the same thing other franchises are doing and should have a hub page. At the moment, that Other Media is effectively on the wrong character page because that overarching franchise page doesn't exist yet.

[up][up] I don't fully understanding the issue you're laying out because I don't have much experience with setting up character pages, and certainly not franchise ones. Every time I look at other works, the hub pages look very simple because none of the works seem to share the identical name to the franchise page.

But I understand the part of your post where you're suggesting turning the current page into the hub. That would just need a bit of re-organisation of the current page to separate the canon index from other media, which does sound like less work.
