Hate Sink cleanup

Go To

The main concern of a Hate Sink is whether the narrative treats the character as someone intended to be despised.

The character in question must actually display detestable qualities, and be hated by other characters at least, or treated by the narrative like someone you are supposed to hate. The author's declared intent cements an example, but is not needed if the narrative itself treats the character as someone who is supposed to be hated.

A Hate Sink may have charismatic traits, a troubled past, or complexity, but in order for this trope to be in effect, such traits must be de-emphasized by the narrative in favour of their detestable traits.

I noticed Long Feng doesn’t have an entry. Everyone for me giving him one? I totally think he counts.

I think the book version of Viserys Targaryen from A Song of Ice and Fire counts, since he's near-identical to the show version (who's also a Hate Sink, see the Game of Thrones Hate Sink page). In fact the book version is slightly worse because it's mentioned in the fifth book that Viserys apparently tried to rape Daenerys the night before her wedding.

Sure to both. One of the reasons I went off the thread is because if there's someone who should be a clear cut example of this, they wouldn't have to be brought up here; I keep adding examples as I find them for the past few months. If they're not that complicated or deep, they shouldn't need to be brought up.

Does Kenny from Let Me In count as a hate sink? Let me count the ways i think he does:

He horribly bullies the main character Owen constantly, abusing him mentally and physically every day for no reason other than sadism. For example, he whips Owen bloody with an antenna, he threatens to rape and drown him at a frozen lake, and attacks owen until he wets himself while laughing at him.

Hes a coward who only ever attacks Owen when he has two friends with him, despite the fact that Owen is a short, rail thin boy whose about half his size. When owen does fight back he waits until he has the support of his older brother until he attacks him again at the school swimming pool and then they put him through a sadistic test.Either he holds his head underwater for 3 minutes, at that point theyll just cut his cheek, or else theyll cut one of his eyes out.

@Guma Not surprising in the slightest.

Pertaining to the how hateable while also shown to be human question, I think of how John Kreese’s backstory is given more air time on Cobra Kai and shows why he is why he is. As humanizing as it is, he’s still constantly inciting violence between and against teenagers constantly. Just to continue to solidify his montra and it comes off incredibly petty, so it nullifies any potential empathy too.

So yeah, if a character’s horrible traits overwhelm and are way more potent than any likable ones, they’re likely a good fit for this.

Gonna write an entry for Lawrence "Larry" Quinn soon too.

If no one minds, I wrote up a tree for ecamples from Scream. Wanted to get some thoughts before I post it.

  • Scream: Each of the Ghostfaces, once their identity is revealed, are revealed to be detestable creatures with little to no redeeming qualities.
    • Scream (1996): Upon being revealed to be one of the killers, Billy is shown to be a deranged teenager who talks Stu into being his accomplice in terrorizing and murdering their friends. He also turns out to be a manipulative creep of a boyfriend as he gets Sidney to sleep with him, shortly before revealing he and Stu are the ones who murdered her mother. Not even Billy's issues with his mother and his family breaking apart granted him sympathy, as he's seen by the survivors, with nothing but disdain. Ironically the only one who still cares for him is his mother, as the second movie shows.
    • Scream 2: Billy Loomis' mother turns out to be this, revealed to be the killer in this film. She tries to play for sympathy in avenging her sons death with a new killing spree, but quickly looses it when with her myopic view of things; she seems to be under the impression she and Billy are the real victims, with no sympathy or remorse over the people he killed, and refuses to own up to her own failures as a mother, or even to how Billy turned out to be. She was also the one who kills Randy.
    • Scream 3:
      • Sidney's half brother Roman Bridger, the killer of this film, is ultimately shown to be a self entitled Psychotic Manchild who directly or indirectly orchestrated the killing sprees of the first three movies. His reasoning to do so is because Maureen rejected him for being a Child by Rape, and a reminder of her trauma. After Sidney survives two killing sprees, at the expense of nearly having her life ruined by them, Roman goes on a final one in a bid, because he thinks he is owed Sidney's fame and life.
      • At face value, John Milton appears to be a representation of Horrible Hollywood. Then it's revealed that he participated in Maureen Roberts' gang-rape, traumatizing her into promiscuous behavior. The gang-rape also resulted in Roman Bridger, making Milton indirectly responsible for all the events in the series. This marks him as one of the few Asshole Victims in the films.
    • Scream 4: Jill Roberts is Sidney's sociopathic cousin who murders all her friends in a killing spree simply so she could gain 15 Minutes of Fame as a Sole Survivor. She even sadistically murders her own mother for good measure. Once Jill realizes that Sidney is recovering in the intensive care unit (after Jill mutilates herself to play victim), she tries to murder her herself so her secret won't be revealed.

[up] Scream 3 needs indentation fixed, and the notes on each character could be written more objectively, but other than that, they seem legit.

[down] Actually, I think they are fine as is.

I would like to ask does the Warden (Dmitri Petrov) from Henry Stickmin Series count? Unlike the other main villain of the game, he does not display any redeeming qualities nor is he have comedic traits and siding with him as opposed to Charles or the Toppat Clan leader will lead to a fail rather than an ending. Not to mention that he and his men does not hesitate to attack government agents despite the fact that his job is to contain criminals. I felt like he's meant to be hated unlike Reginald or Right Hand Man who shows redeeming qualities in some of the routes.

Hi, this is my first venture into this thread (though I have been active in the Complete Monster and Magnificent Bastard threads), and I have to ask: is there a reason Brigadier General Fessler from Fullmetal Alchemist isn't listed as a Hate Sink?

[up] Not unless there is an obvious reason he shouldn't be listed. If you believe he fits according to the narrative intent, just write accordingly on his character page.

Yeah, this thread doesn't really approve examples the way the others do. We focus on clean up and discussing murky examples.

Yeah, this really doesn't have the same function as the CM thread, which is why I left this one for the most part.

Although I am considering the posibliity of making a page for Web Orignal examples, provided I find enough examples. But we'll cross that bridge when we get to it. (I'm on a Creepypasta binge as of late, and thus far there a few I can think of off the top of my head.

I'm the least expected Troper to visit this thread, but this example from Blade Under Mask's YMMV page is dubious at best, espcially since this trope isn't a YMMV item in the first place.

* Hate Sink: Asami due to her combination of physical and emotional abuse towards her adopted children, some forgive her since she clearly has some regret over her worst actions.

I think so; I guess I'll move Asani's example to this thread after I'm done with tests next week. Then again, I rarely read this webcomic, even if it's in my list of future interests. Also, I just deleted the example a few seconds ago at this time of writing.

@Beast Would Stu and Mickey count too or because they’re both nuts, are they seen as being too exploited by Billy and Mrs. Loomis respectively for this?

I know Charlie doesn’t count. He fawned over Jill way too much and she DEFINITELY took advantage of him.

Lust from Fullmetal Alchemist fits the trope like an opera glove. She's "pure evil, even for Homunculi standards. She's one of the most sadistic villains in the series as she expresses pleasure in torturing and killing the people she targets, has a god-complex towards people, and will gladly manipulate and play with her food without guilt. When she finally faces off against the characters under the third laboratory, she stabs Jean and Roy then cruelly leaves them to bleed out instead of mercy killing them. Then, she chases after Riza and Al and torments Riza about having killed Roy and relishes in crushing her hopes. Riza has a complete emotional breakdown over Roy's death and Lust prepares to finish them both off." (And yes, that's a direct quote from this page.) She doesn't have any Evil Is Cool traits, complexity, or a Freudian Excuse. Ergo, I vote that she get a nomination for the trope, because she reminds me of a certain redheaded bitch who's also one of the more recent and well-known examples of the tropes.
