Do you have trouble remembering the difference between Deathbringer the Adorable and Fluffy the Terrible?

Do you have trouble recognizing when you've written a Zero-Context Example?

Not sure if you really have a Badass Bookworm or just a guy who likes to read?

Well, this is the thread for you. We're here to help you will all the finer points of example writing. If you have any questions, we can answer them. Don't be afraid. We don't bite. We all just want to make the wiki a better place for everyone.

Useful Tips:

  • Make sure that the example makes sense to both people who don't know the work AND don't know the trope.
    • Wrong: The Mentor: Kevin is this to Bob in the first episode.
    • Right: The Mentor: Kevin takes Bob under his wing in the first episode and teaches him the ropes of being a were-chinchilla.
  • Never just put the trope title and leave it at that.
    • Wrong: Badass Adorable
    • Right: Badass Adorable: Xavier, the group's cute little mascot, defeats three raging elephants with both hands tied behind his back using only an uncooked spaghetti noodle.
  • When is normally far less important than How.
    • Wrong: Big Bad: Of the first season.
    • Right: Big Bad: The heroes have to defeat the Mushroom Man lest the entirety of Candy Land's caramel supply be turned into fungus.
  • A character name is not an explanation.

Yeah, cut it. Other works have problems with R34.

MLP is definitely more infamous for its R34 than other works.

On Characters.DC Super Hero Girls 2019, I have a bit of trouble with this example:

Can it counts as Expy when it's still a version of the same character?

Methinks it would for better as another trope, maybe Mythology Gag.

Reposting from the previous pages:

Is it me or do none of the Locked Out of the Loop examples on War of the Realms fit the definition of the trope - (Everyone knows a deep, dark secret about a character... Except the character themselves.)

  • Locked Out of the Loop:
    • Zig-zagged to hell and back. Despite being the big finale to the Myth Arc and involving Earth, not every title is getting involved, which sticks with Marvel's desire not to enact such big plots with massive tie-ins. For instance, while the X-Men are involved, they are attached to a three issue mini-series leaving the other titles free for Age of X-Man (which involves almost every mutant in the Marvel world trapped in an alternate, utopian reality created by X-Man) and its aftermath.
    • An interesting case involves Venom, with both Eddie Brock and the Venom symbiote acting separately under that moniker — Donny Cates' Venom #12 having ended with the symbiote realizing it's been a terrible partner to Eddie and them going their separate ways. Eddie tricks one of Malekith's war-witches into giving him an artificial symbiote; while the Venom symbiote joins the War Avengers and is captured by Malekith, who tries to turn it into his own version of All-Black. In Issue #14, Eddie even outright states he has no clue what's going on.
    • Carnage — who himself has his own event happening right after War of the Realms ends — has been travelling around the United States hunting past and present symbiote hosts. It was acknowledged on Twitter that North America being glaciated into New Jotunheim would put a crimp in this crusade, but no indication has been given that we'll see him doing anything about it.

Doctor Who features antagonists called Daleks, who are known for saying, "Exterminate!". One person listed it as Beam Me Up, Scotty! because they said it less (but still said it occasionally) in their first three or so appearances. I'd say this is not an example since they were saying, "Exterminate!" from the get-go and their habit of saying it often happened before the Ninth Doctor era. What do y'all think?

This was added back to Xenoblade Chronicles 2:

  • Ass Pull: Pyra and Mythra reviving after sacrificing themselves, given that it happens at the very end of the game and isn't explained.

However this was on Xenoblade Chronicles 2 - Main Protagonists:

  • Foreshadowing: Pyra's plan to sacrifice herself to save Rex by giving him her entire core crystal and Malos' explanations of how an Aegis can still function for while without it is what allows Pyra and Mythra to give their Core Crystal to Rex before sacrificing herself to destroy the orbital elevator, under the guess that it would hold on to enough of the Conduit's power to reconstruct their bodies later. Of course, she knew the chance of it working was so small that she didn't tell anyone, and if it didn't work she still would've had to sacrifice herself anyway. But fortunately, her hunch paid off and they get new bodies after the ending.

Does this count?

  • Freudian Excuse: His reason for turning to villainy was that he was a gifted inventor who created the device that Tony Stark funded, yet was fired for being callous and unstable precisely because he didn't get the recognition he wanted. It doesn't help that Tony still used the device after firing him, with many likely thinking it was him who invented it.

I always assumed that Freudian Excuse has to deal with traumatic events in childhood or early adolescence and be related to family, family substitutes or friends. Does being mistreated by one's boss count?

This example on YMMV.The Devil Wears Prada is just saying "Who cares if her boss is horrible to her, she should be grateful to have a job at all!"

  • Values Dissonance: The book was written in 2003 - before the financial crisis of 2008. This can make Andy come across as entitled for not appreciating her job at all. While it's undeniably horrible, it will offer her great career progression, she gets designer clothes for free, and it pays enough for her to live in New York. However, she is never grateful at all to be employed anywhere in the first place. With horrible bosses, long and unpaid overtime hours, and not truly having the option to take sick days being things many people wouldn't bat an eye at today, she can come off as somewhat unrelatable nowadays.

There's also an Ugly Cute example relating to a real-life member of the band The Devil Wears Prada.

Is this Innocuously Important Episode or Genius Bonus? (Major spoilers in markup)

  • The episode "Say Uncle" has no effect on the plot as a whole, and is even stated within the episode itself to be non canon. However, Uncle Grandpa saying Steven should polish his gem twice a year becomes a lot more poignant four seasons later; real rose quartzes don't need to be polished, but diamonds, Steven and Rose's actual gem type, do - twice per year, in fact.

I removed Values Dissonance on YMMV.The Devil Wears Prada and official handheld ports from Video Game Demake, but I'm wondering if the PS1 Undertale models (which I added myself) count, since Undertale is already Retraux.

SasquatchX added this to Super Smash Bros. Ultimate - 70 to 75 in the Hero's folder:

  • Germans Love David Hasselhoff: Invoked Trope, as the inclusion of Eight among the playables is this. Sakurai makes mention in his interview regarding the acquisition of the Heroes of Eight's status being the one that western audiences are most likely going to recognize.

This isn't proper use of Invoked Trope isn't it? Using it for YMMV items is for when said item occurs within the narrative itself, not when it is used as a reason from Word of God for including something within a work.

From Characters. The Rising Of The Shield Hero:

  • Asshole Victim: Malty's character practically guaranteed that her end was going to be a brutal one. And it very much is, to the degree that even Naofumi can stomach watching it.

As far as I recall this trope applies if and only if the disgrace is unrelated to the victim’s act. It’s also when the rude member of the party gets killed off by Jason or the Terminator and the audience is happy to see them go. Also, the focus of the trope is on the "victim" aspect. I think it doesn’t apply to the villain.

Does it count as a true example of this trope?

I'm inclined to agree. Per the trope "They may not be directly responsible for THIS particular misfortune, as that would be Laser-Guided Karma, but their behavior means something like this was going to happen eventually."

I'd also say, even if it does fit, it's low context since it doesn't specify what her end is to warrant the victim, nor her actions to make her an asshole.

Yeah. It has been restored again by trainhobovegas with the rationale of “There isn't really anything likable about her, In Universe or otherwise and she has no redeeming qualities. Even after her treachery has been exposed to the public.”

I don’t want to get into an edit war over this, so should we cut it or keep it?

From YMMV.My Wife And Kids.

Moral Event Horizon: Michael crossed this in "Here Comes Da Judge" when he let Kady fall off her bike and wasn't even sorry. Not only that, but aside from briefly getting the cold shoulder from her and Jay, he didn't suffer any form of comeuppance. It should be noted that the writers probably took notice of this, seeing as in the next episode—-the one where Clare steals the car—-he was shown as a much more concerned parent, seeing as he gets very angry at her for doing something that could have gotten her hurt or killed.

  • Jay’s actions in "Michael Joins a Gym" to how hypocritical and heartless they are. Jay is such a Small Name, Big Ego that whenever Michael even stands next to a beautiful woman or her wait is even hinted at he ends up in the doghouse. Michael in turn is very self confident so is telling that after she makes fun of him when he can't fit into his favorite pair of vintage jeans and later openly flirts with an old high school friend of his he starts undergoing this ridiculous Training from Hell. To make matters worse Jay never even realized she did anything wrong her kids called her out on her actions after seeing Michael delirious from exhaustion have to be carried into the house.
    • Furthermore whenever Michael does something wrong he always has to go the extra mile to make it right while all Jay had to do was by him a bigger pair of jeans and compliment him.

Clearly a misuse since non of these characters are getting redeem or are truly bad guys.
