Removing complaining, bashing and other negativity from the wiki

Go To

Inspired by this thread, I've noticed that this wiki doesn't have a dedicated cleanup thread for negativity.

As we all know, Complaining About Shows You Don't Like, Creator Bashing and other negativity isn't desired on the wiki, except in a few selected areas like reviews and several Darth Wiki pages (and even then, with limitations). And yet, it's one of the most common sins wiki contributors can make.

So, if you find a page, TLP or discussion whose content seems like a straight-up insult or any other bitching - including complainy soapboxing -, you might ask here for help with removing said content.

The sandbox for this project is located at Works That Require Cleanup of Complaining.

From Overused Running Gag, under the western animation folder.

  • Drawn Together is yet another example of the "regurgitate the same jokes over and over, then acknowledge how they've stopped being funny and continue using the jokes over and over again" tactic.

[up]It's zero-context too, so unless someone here's familiar with the show, it might have to have everything after the work name deleted before commenting it out.

This is on Mickey, Donald, Goofy: The Three Musketeers:

Considering it's a DTV movie, it's actually quite an improvement on previous sequels which were mostly excuses to try and kick off (bad) television series.

The Audience-Alienating Premise example on YMMV.High Guardian Spice seems valid. Ignoring the controversial stuff, it's a Western Animesque show being hosted on an anime platform. Weebs just want actual anime and nobody seems to be talking about it.

Edit: Just realized that AAP now requires proof that the work failed somehow. So, uh, I guess it's not valid.

The page is definitely still pretty tame all things considered. If it's not getting attention then maybe nobody cared enough to watch it and it flopped? I dunno.

[up][up] maybe some more context on that would be nice, but honestly i think it's a valid example. there are definitely examples of direct-to-DVD disney films where it's apparent they were failed pilots (Atlantis: Milo's Return, Cinderella II: Dreams Come True, Beauty and the Beast: Belle's Magical World). The Three Musketeers feels like it's trying to be an actual adaptation of the original story with themes and stakes and whatnot, which is less common; it helps that it's a standalone film, not a follow-up to an existing property.

edit: i didn't see that was part of the description and not like, a Surprisingly Improved Sequel example or something. yeah cut that from the description at least

[up][up] Again, that seems less about the premise, because it's unrelated to the story, and more a matter of Uncertain Audience.

It is getting mixed to negative reviews so it could qualify for AAP if there's reason to believe it's the premise that turned people off. But as it stands, it was mostly meta stuff that spelled its doom. The worst people have to say about the premise is that it's been done before.

I found this on the character page for Victorious

  • Freudian Excuse Is No Excuse: Her traumatic home life is weirdly almost never brought up when she does something bad. Even if it were, it would never justify (or even explain) some of her viler actions, like actively endangering Tori and Robbie's lives in "Tori Gets Stuck".
Tori: [to Andre] And you forgot that Jade is a mean, vicious person with deep psychological problems.

The thing is, I don't think this point was ever made in the show. The quote doesn't really back this up. Tori isn't saying that Jade's backstory doesn't excuse her behavior. To me this seems like someone complaining about a character's actions.

Yeah, Schneider shows just kind of use psychological trauma for laughs. It's never meant to be analyzed anyway. I don't even remember Jade having a bad home life, at least not on the same level as Sam Puckett (or even Cat from the same series), so was it even made a big deal beyond gags?

Maybe I'm biased because I think the 80's were mainstream pop's Golden Age, but this entry on Music seems to be inaccurate:

Pop music from The '80s had this reputation in the '90s and the first half of the '00s, due to the ubiquity of the Yamaha DX7 synthesizer and its cheesy-sounding presets being nearly inescapable in all forms of rock and pop music during the decade, as well as the goofy fashion trends seen in music videos. Many I Love The '80s-style nostalgia shows featured artists openly cringing at the way they looked in the videos. The only electronic acts from the era that got a pass were typically cool Alternative Dance bands like Depeche Mode and New Order. However, as with hair metal around the same time, '80s nostalgia made Synth-Pop cool again in the late '00s and '10s, with many contemporary pop acts adopting retro-sounding synths in their songs and the entire synthwave genre hearkening back to the electronic film soundtracks of the era. That said, while analogue synthesizers like the Minimoog and the Prophet-5 have made a comeback, FM synths like the DX7 are still remembered as cheesy relics, with used examples selling for considerably less than their analogue counterparts.

As far I know, while the late 80's (1986 to 89) synth-pop/freestyle//new jack swing/house/etc. era is often disparaged for bland, generic preset-heavy synth-pop, the late 70's to early 80's (1976 to 1985) new wave/new romantic/synth-pop era is lauded for the sheer beauty and depth in their compositions, like "The Lexicon Of Love" by ABC, "New Gold Dream" by Simple Minds, etc; a lot of critics even say this era was pop's zenith and nothing before or after even compares. So this entry's rather iffy, although the "FM synths are worse than analogue ones" part seems valid.

I was looking through 20 Bear Asses and discovered a pretty extensive list for The Elder Scrolls IV: Oblivion and The Elder Scrolls V: Skyrim that gets pretty... bitter. The examples are mostly valid (although I'm pretty sure the last one under Skyrim isn't an example), but I could use a hand removing all the complaining. I put them in a folder because altogether it makes quite the wall of text.

    The Examples
  • Oblivion:
    • A farmer asks you to kill the bears that have been eating his sheep, and please bring him back the teeth as proof. The drop rate is 100%, but the challenge is finding the things in all the wide-open forest. Who ever heard of keeping sheep in the forest, anyway? And if you do the quest when you have a low Character Level, you'll be going after bear cubs, which are so small they are hidden by tall grass. We recommend the Detect Life spell to make life easier.
    • The quest for master-level Destruction training gets about as close as possible to the literal title of the trope, requiring you to collect 20 bear pelts.
    • Worst is the quest to farm twelve scales from Slaughter Fish. They spawn across an entire lake and the next one doesn't spawn until you find and kill the prior one. There is a compass marker, but it does not help if the fish spawns inside a freakin' rock.
    • Being expelled from the mage's guild will also earn you a quest to get admitted back in-collecting 20 of certain ingredients, which if this is the second time that's happened, are reasonably rare ingredients as well. Being expelled from the fighters guild requires gathering/buying 20 bear pelts to get back in, not too awful as they're common items sold in groups of 5. Being expelled a second time requires harvesting 20 minotaur horns (more than some players see in an entire play through); you may as well load that earlier save from 3 hours ago from before when you were unjustly kicked out, it'll probably save you time in the long run.
    • Gathering the various tidbits to be cured of vampirism also amounts to this. It takes 5 empty grand soul gems that you'll probably have to buy and/or steal from a third of the alchemy suppliers in the country to gather enough, just to get started (one or two less if you noticed the hidden basement entrance in the quest giver's house-fortunately she won't recognize her own property). Then, you need to find a number of different alchemy ingredients that chances are you don't have stockpiled anywhere, and are scattered all over the place. Also, if you've ignored the main quest until now, good luck finding any blood grass - unless you buy the Wizard's Tower DLC, of course.
    • The master speech trainer quest requires speaking to every single beggar in the country. Fortunately, speech is such a useless skill no one seems to bother with this one.
    • There's also the "seeking your roots" quest, and no, its not about discovering any sort of background information on your character. It involves finding 100 nirnroot plants spread through the whole game, for a fairly mediocre reward (a series of potions whose effects a mid level spell caster can replicate in his sleep, and an Nth playthrough player produce as constant effects as early as level 1). Unless the player is shooting for a very long and thorough play through, or is specifically scouring the coastline for them, chances are you won't stumble across anywhere near as many roots as you need for the quest. The only "help" this quest has is there's over 300 of the plants and they naturally ring and glow to help you find them.
  • Skyrim:
    • They've started growing nirnroots on a farm. Unfortunately, they need 20 jazbay grapes for fertilizer. Jazbay plants are inconspicuous lichen-like things, looking nothing like real-world grape plants. Fortunately, they don't fight back.
    • Just for good measure, Skyrim also contains an instance of the archetypal "bring back 10 bear pelts" fetch quest as well. And given the fact that you probably won't be strong enough not to get clobbered by bears when you get the quest, you'll be mostly relying on random vendor inventories to get them, and the things are most likely going to clog up your inventory space for a while. As a final insult, the questgiver (a lumberjack who hates bears for scratching the local trees, rendering them unusable) has no need for the pelts, they're just to prove you fulfilled her request. Bears also drop claws which are much lighter, but only pelts will do. Even polar bear pelts, which obviously didn't belong to the local brown bears.
    • If that wasn't tedious enough, another character demands nirnroot, nightshade, and deathbells, 20 apiece. Another wants a few ice wraith teeth, another wants 10 fire salts (one of the few items in the shop that costs over 100 gold).
    • The game engine generates these on the fly, with in-game programming that goes something like "require _PLAYER_ to get [item] from [dungeon]"
    • A common habit of Riften's citizens is arbitrarily running out of a particularly rare item, as almost all but the literal Bear Asses quest comes from that town. It also includes the fun ones where you have to find several of two kinds of flawless gems, which are not purchasable in any way or form in-game, and is completely level-based on how you find them. Possibly justified as a sort of balance, since Riften contains one of the best and cheapest homes to obtain early on, and the easiest home to obtain if you're deliberately putting off the main quest to avoid fighting dragons.
    • If you're looking for Falmer Ears, you can sometimes loot as many as two of them from Falmer corpses! Similarly, you can always liberate a single Giant's Toe, but never more.

[up][up][up]Looking at the description for the page itself, it's definitely in need of work. Half of the description is about the controversy and box office turnout surrounding the film, and the portion that does summarize the film does so by backhandely comparing the film's leads to a fictional Corrupt Corporate Executive.

I will echo that High Guardian Spice should not be AAP. A premise that is bland and clichéd is more or less the opposite of AAP, which is when the premise is remarkable in an off-putting way. This one looked like many other shows with no hook to catch an audience; I don't think we have an item for that, since It's the Same, Now It Sucks! is for franchise instalments only. Maybe Cliché Storm if the trailers suggest not only the premise but also the story would have nothing new.

[up] I think there are several entries in the page that have plenty of issues. Here are just two examples:

  • Reality Is Unrealistic: Downplayed; Sir Stanley Rous actually did lose the role of FIFA president to Havelange primarily because of his blatant racism and open support for Apartheid. However, the fact that the film for some reason chooses to give a Historical Villain Upgrade to someone whose views would already be considered morally repugnant by modern standards, while also lionising a successor who was himself a very flawed man, ends up making Rous' faults look comically overblown by comparison.
  • Stealth Parody: The film's director, Frédéric Auburtin, claimed that he inserted "ironic parts" into the film. ESPN's review notes that Uruguay winning the right to host the World Cup and Argentina's 1978 World Cup victory were hinted as being bribery and match fixing. The reviewer also notes that the film shows kids in poverty playing football while FIFA doesn't lift a finger to help them out of poverty.

Too Human had a troubled development, was badly received and got in legal trouble after release. Considering that, the page is light on complaining, but there is some. I cleaned up as best I could, but it would help if someone who knows the game could look it over, especially the several ZCEs I commented out.

Does this entry from WebVideo.Mandalore Gaming seem bashy to you?

  • True Art Is Incomprehensible:invoked Discussed during his Pathologic 2. Mandalore points out that despite how good the game is, game journalists gave it negative reviews because it was "too hard"invoked despite the game being both designed that wayinvoked and having plenty of options to adjust it. He explains that he finds it weird the "video games as art" crowd praise walking-simulator games, which barely qualify as games, but when a game comes along that has a genuinely unique artistic setting, characters, and gameplay, they thumb their noses at it. It's part of why he praises the game heavily, hoping that word of mouth sells the game better than journalists did.

We received a complaint about the second paragraph in John C. Wright: specifically that it is prejudicial and/or unbalanced. While it seems like a reasonable summary of the content of the linked blog post, having it at all appears to cross the line about drama importation/gossip about real-life people. I'm submitting it for consensus.
