PREPARE TO LOSE INNOCENCE

Mario's Monday Night Massacre is a Friday Night Funkin' mod created and directed by Inferno with the help of a team of coders, charters, composers, etc.

In this mod, Boyfriend and Girlfriend are playing Super Mario Bros., except their copy just so happens to house the malevolent spirit MX, who pulls their souls into the game, leading to Boyfriend rap battling him, along with several other characters from Mario creepypastas and parodies.

Secret (SPOILERS)

  • A Grand Ol' Time (Grand Dad vs. Boyfriend)

Tropes:

  • Adaptational Context Change: How I HATE YOU Luigi ends up burning alive. Whereas in his original story I HATE YOU Luigi was knocked into the lava by Mario, here, he ends up falling into the lava due to the platform he was standing on collapsing under him.
  • Adaptation Deviation: The Victim's portrayal in this mod is a completely different take on the character created by Inferno for the sake of distinguishing them from other versions of the character. Instead of being a girl who was supposedly murdered by Mario, The Victim is Mario himself, having discovered that he's a video game character and having Gone Mad from the Revelation, killing everyone else in the game and heavily distorting his own code, corrupting his appearance into the infamous red face of The Victim from the original creepypasta.
  • Adaptational Dye-Job: As a result of MX pulling their souls into the game, Boyfriend and Girlfriend are given Mario-esque outfits. There's no explanation as to why they're also wearing these outfits outside of the Story Mode, since the other songs are based on works that don't involve MX.
  • Ascended Extra: In the original "Secret History of Super Mario Bros.", Luigi made very brief appearances in a few select scenes. In "Cover-Up", he's by his brother's side at all times, assisting him in his fight against Boyfriend by shooting at the later.
  • Art Shift:
    • The story mode cutscenes are rendered in an 8-bit pixel artstyle, emulating the original Super Mario Bros., as well as Mario '85.
    • "Ground Zero" is modeled entirely in 3D, background and characters included, emulating the artstyle of Super Mario 64.
    • "Pissed" borders on Stylistic Suck, in reference to the animation it was based on being very crudely drawn.
  • Bad Job, Worse Uniform: Implied with I HATE YOU Luigi, whose expression is one of bemusement whilst dressed as an elf. He outright calls his job "Stupid" and isn't ashamed to say he hates it.
  • The Cameo:
    • Lucas appears as the audience of the Story Mode, weary of MX, and hiding behind the bricks once MX reveals himself.
    • Mario can be seen sitting near Coronation Day Peach in "Pink Forest", with his back turned to the camera.
    • "A Grand Ol' Time" features the likes of several meme characters serving as the audience for the song. These memes are Sanic, Weegee, Vinesauce, Shoop Da Woop, Nyan Cat, Trollface and the Peanut Butter Jelly Time Banana.
  • Censor Box: The pissing Mario in "Pissed" has a censor box right where his dick would be, as his pants are off and he's trying to piss.
  • Combat Pragmatist:
    • MX will attempt to stomp Boyfriend throughout "Hero's Doom". The player must press notes that depict Boyfriend on them in order to help him jump and avoid the attack. Failure to press said notes results in a severe health drain that easily leads to a game over.
    • Secret History Mario has his brother shoot Boyfriend throughout "Cover-Up". The player must press Space in order to dodge the bullets.
  • Denser and Wackier:
    • "Pissed", which is about a goomba trying to get Mario to fight him while Mario is just trying to take a piss.
    • The secret song "A Grand Ol' Time" is this, being centered around a memetic bootleg version of Mario.
  • Designated Girl Fight: "Pink Forest" is between Coronation Day Peach and Girlfriend. Averted with Dais-eye, who is also female but is still faced by Boyfriend.
  • Distaff Counterpart: Dais-eye. Much like MX, she disguises herself as a normal Mario character (Daisy in her case) before revealing her monstrous true forms. Though unlike MX, she reveals said true forms within the same song.
  • Dual Boss: Inverted for "Ground Zero", in which the player plays as both Boyfriend and Mario against Wario Apparition.
  • Evil Is Bigger: MX after revealing his true appearance, standing at 12 feet tall. The Victim is also noticabely taller after dropping his disguise.
  • Evil Laugh: MX has two instances of this, one being when he reveals himself after "Familiar", and another one during the final minute of "Hero's Doom".
  • Eyes Do Not Belong There: In her true form, Dais-eye is revealed to have eyes in her hair, on her earrings, on the gem on her dress, the gem on the front of her crown, and on the hem of her dress.
  • The Fourth Wall Will Not Protect You: For most opponents, their winning icons will stare directly at the player with a Slasher Smile.
  • Funny Background Event: When the event listed just below occurs in "Merry Massacre", both Daiseye and The Victim stare in bewilderment at what Lucas did, though pay it no mind once he gets back to the harmless bonding he was doing with MX to begin with.
  • Graceful Landing, Clumsy Landing: Boyfriend and Girlfriend engage in this in the opening cutscene of the Story Mode. Boyfriend has the Clumsy landing, landing face-first on the ground with a splat, while Girlfriend has the Graceful landing, using her wings to slow her descent and ensure a soft landing.
  • Harmless Freezing: At the end of I HATE YOU Luigi's section of "Merry Massacre", Lucas manages to shut up the grouchy plumber by freezing him with an Ice Flower, complete with the SMW life lost sound effect accompanying it. The harmlessness may not be present if it was played realistically, but the attack simply serves to annoy him more as he falls to the ground.
  • Hidden Eyes: MX has these in his False Hero form as seen in "Familiar", and Victim #1 has these while disguised as Mario for the start of "Victimised".
  • Interface Screw:
    • For the final minute of "Burning Hatred", podoboos will jump out of the lava in drop down over the player's side of the screen in an attempt to block their view of incoming notes.
    • Throughout "Pink Forest", root notes will appear alongside the normal notes. Hitting these notes causes roots to appear that will block the screen. The more of these notes the player presses, the higher the roots will rise. The roots slowly drop back down if the player avoids hitting the root notes.
    • In "Blinked", once Dais-eye has revealed herself, eyes will randomly appear onscreen, with a chance to appear on the player's side and block their view of incoming notes.
  • Lighter and Softer:
    • "Pissed" and "A Grand Ol' Time" are this, as their respective source materials are parodies without any horror elements to be found.
    • Downplayed with "Cover-Up", in that while Secret History Mario isn't a supernatural monster, he is a cruel dictator, making him a case of A Lighter Shade of Black compared to the likes of MX and Coronation Day Peach.
    • "Merry Massacre" is a lighthearted Christmas song in which MX plays a Mall Santa and Lucas is sitting on his lap, the former showing zero intentions of harming the latter.
  • Mall Santa: MX is dressed up as one for "Merry Massacre", while Lucas sits on his lap holding his Christmas wishlist.
  • Non-Standard Character Design:
    • Wario Apparition is rendered in Super Mario 64-style 3D graphics instead of 2D. The same goes for Boyfriend and Mario in "Ground Zero", the song in which Wario Apparition is faced.
    • The Goomba and Mario in "Pissed" are more crudely drawn, in reference to the Stylistic Suck of the original "Mario Pissing" video.
  • Promoted to Playable: Girlfriend in "Pink Forest" and a joke version of Mario in "Pissed". Lucas and MX both also become playable during Christmas-themed song "Merry Massacre".
  • Stylistic Suck: "Pissed", as a nod to the video it was originally based on.
  • Token Good Teammate: Grand Dad is the only opponent in the mod who means no harm to either Boyfriend or Girlfriend.
  • Villains Out Shopping: In "Merry Massacre", in addition to MX playing a Mall Santa and I HATE YOU Luigi being his assistant, M A R I O and Dais-eye can be seen in the background happily spectating the events of the song, and Coronation Day Peach is in the foreground holding up a camera like a mother happily taking a picture of her kid on Santa's lap for a scrapbook. Each and every one of the supernatural freaks is in the Christmas spirit, except for I HATE YOU Luigi.
  • Why Don't You Just Shoot Him?: Averted in "Cover-Up", as Secret History Luigi attempts to shoot Boyfriend multiple times in order to assist Secret History Mario.
