Video Game / Mario Mix

Go To

Mario Mix (also dubbed Funky Forest Mayhem by the official YouTube playlist) is a Friday Night Funkin' web series/Game Mod created by Misfire. It consists of a series of Mario themed remixes of Vs Sonic.exe songs as well as original songs. The songs are currently only available on YouTube but will be made into a mod in the future.

Not to be confused with official Super Mario game Dance Dance Revolution Mario Mix, fellow SMB/FNF crossover mod Super Mario Bros. Funk Mix, or FriedFrick's Sonic.exe (Mario Mix).

Non-Vs Sonic.exe remixes

Original Songs

Tropes:

  • Adaptational Context Change:
    • Luigi screaming "MARIOOOO!" from Luigi's Mansion is reused in "Dire Attempt 2401" — in Luigi's Mansion, him screaming is comical and showing off his nature as a Lovable Coward and Cowardly Lion. In the song, it's reframed as Luigi calling out for Mario in a desperate panic as the Boos drag him deeper into the water.
    • Also another Luigi scream, this time, the one from Super Mario World (1991): in the episode "Mama Luigi", where the famous "help" scream comes fromnote , Luigi is surrounded by Wigglers along with Baby Yoshi and, once again, it's a comical scene that shows off his nature as a Lovable Coward and Cowardly Lion. In the context of the videos featuring PS135, however, Luigi is one of the tortured souls enslaved by the entity, and this scream can be heard many times, most likely being his agonizing plea as he's getting tortured into doing what PS135 asks.
  • Adaptational Gender Identity:
    • Unlike the transgender Curse, Framed is cisgender.
    • Compared to the presumably cisgender Girlfriend, her Lost Levels counterpart Chelsey is transgender.
  • Adaptation Dye-Job: Rather than being based on their classic designs as in "Triple Trouble", Soul Tails, Knuckles, and Robotnik instead appear closer to their designs from the Sonic OVA to go with PS135's souls being based off the Super Mario World cartoon.
  • Adaptational Early Appearance: If going by chronological order of the songs rather than the order they release, Soul Luigi makes his debut earlier than Soul Tails, making a surprise appearance towards the end of "Time Attack", whereas Soul Tails didn't debut until "Triple Trouble" with the rest of the souls.
  • Adaptational Species Change: During "Nakisakebu", Pico is portrayed as an orange Yoshi with pointed glasses, to keep with the context the song aims to portray.
  • Adaptation Expansion:
    • Along side the Mario Mix Originals and songs from outside of Vs Sonic.exe, Fire has also included Mario Mixes of unfinished/unreleased songs, such as "MAR10 Day" being a Mario Mix of the scrapped song "Slaybells", or "Shell Slam" being a Mario Mix of the unfinished song for Luther, "Her World". This is on top of completely original songs, either based on other Mario related media, new takes on the EXE formula, or giving new characters more time in the limelight.
    • Coldsteel only received one song, "Personel", in the original planned Sonic.exe 3.0 update. Hotmetal on the other hand, receives an expy of that song through "Punk", but also gets a second original song, "DEATH".
  • Adapted Out:
    • While Boyfriend is usually the player character, Girlfriend for the longest time, didn't make a single appearance in these videos. Even her mother appeared before she did, as did her Lost Levels counterpart. She has been confirmed to have an important role in the story, however. She finally appears in "OwO", where she is present on her speaker set as usual.
    • Mario is completely absent from "BF's Funklamity", barring a few parodies of him, as Boyfriend takes his spot.
    • The Lost Levels remix of "MAR10 Day" removes MX and replaces him with Emperor M.
    • Unlike in "Omnipresent", Boyfriend is completely absent from "???", with Monkey 32 replacing him.
    • Because they have yet to receive a remix, the analogous characters to Fleetway Super Sonic and Tails Doll (aside from maybe Luigi Doll, but he's from a Mario Mix Orginial and not a Mario Mixed Sunshine) does not appear in "???". PS 135's Souls, on the other hand, have no excuse to be absent from the monkey showdown (since all four are analogous characters of Xenophanes' victims, who show up on occasion in Omnipresent, especially Eggman), but they refused to show up anyway.
    • Luigi Doll's chat partner in the original image that "Lookin' For MIL Fs" was based on is completely absent in the song, presumably because the song is meant to be a prequel to the image.
  • Ambiguous Situation: Charles Mariotinet's exact relationship with Powerup State 135 is this. Whereas in "MAR10 Day" the two are happily singing together and celebrating the holiday, in "Powered Up", Charles drops his usual cheerful demeanor and becomes downright pissed once PS135 shows up.
  • Art Shift:
    • Like how "You Can't Run" shifts to the sprites from Sonic the Hedgehog, "Time Attack" briefly shifts from normal drawings to Super Mario World styled sprites halfway through the song.
    • "MIRROR MODE" contains a portion where PS135 and Mario switch to ''Super Mario World" sprites, with PS135 receiving a new sprite different from the one in "Time Attack".
  • Ascended Meme: Since the teaser for "Disperatzione", people have jokingly clamoured for a remix of none other than the ever infamous Welcome Old from Vs. Mouse. And at long last, Fire has delivered with "Salutation".
  • The Bad Guy Wins: "Mirror Mode" ends with PS135 defeating and enslaving Mario, with him mockingly ending with "See you next time!"
  • Bait-and-Switch: Before his song premiered, the video for "Storm" was labeled as a song called "Death Stare", implying it would be based off of the imfamous Luigi Death Stare meme. The song leads in with BF looking ready to face off against Luigi, both in karts, before Wega jumpscares the viewer and reveals it's really HIS song. After the premiere, the video's name was changed to what it is now and the thumbnail to Wega's face instead of Luigi's.
  • Bilingual Bonus:
    • "Disperazione" is the Italian word for despair and desperation, referencing Waluigi's state during the song.
    • "Nakisakebu" means to "cry out", referencing what state Baby Mario seems to be permanently doing.
  • Boom, Headshot!: Scout ends up being unlucky enough to fall victim to this in "Building Bricks", as right after his bongo solo, he's shot in the head by another off-screen merc.
  • Break the Cutie: Oogtar was the sole survivor of his village burning down at the hands of PS135. The ordeal traumatized him into insanity, and he willingly joined PS135 when the latter came to claim his soul.
  • Brick Joke: At the end of "MARIO IS MISSING", there's a Freeze-Frame Bonus with a render of a dolphin from Super Mario World, with devil horns, angry eyebrows and a curly mustache crudely drawn onto it. Months later, this joke character would be fully realized and get their own song, "Back Ride".
  • Butt-Monkey: Boyfriend gets the receiving end of this during "BF's Funklamity", suffering similar abuse that Mario had to go through in the song's videos of origin, such as getting squashed, blown up, shot by both regular bullets and Bullet Bills, etc.
  • Call-Back: During the Super Mario World styled portion of "MIRROR MODE", PS135 goes back to his Mario disguise from "Illusion", complete with his tamer vocals.
  • The Cameo: Luigi, Sonic.exe, Pico, Tally, Cherry and Hotmetal all appear in Boyfriend's attempts to destroy the castle in "BF's Funklamity". None of them are very helpful.
  • Canon Immigrant: Although PS135's songs are mainly based off the Super Mario World game, the soul characters have their voices and (with the exception of Luigi) designs from the cartoon. Oogtar from said cartoon is also among the souls, dueting with Yoshi.
  • Combat Pragmatist: In comparison to Xenophanes, PS135 utilizes his souls much more often, bringing in Luigi towards the end of "Time Attack", summoning them all to assist him in the last part of "MARIO IS MISSING", and using all four against Mario during "MIRROR MODE". This implies that he's less willing to fight fair, as even despite how much of a Sore Loser Xenophanes is, he still fought Boyfriend one on one until he was absolutely enraged.
  • Commonality Connection: During "Console War", Soul Peach and Soul Knuckles tell each other about their deaths from their respective killers and how they couldn't stop them.
  • Content Warnings: The start of "Storm" warns that the video may be harmful to those with photosensitive epilepsy, due to the numerous times Wega's face flashes on the screen. It's styled after the similar warning that shows up whenever booting up a Wii.
  • Contrasting Sequel Antagonist: Parodied. Hotmetal's name is the opposite of Coldsteel's and that's it. They're literally the exact same, otherwise.
  • Cover Innocent Eyes and Ears: During "Shortstack", Paper Mario blocks Watt's eyes in the presence of Shy Gal until she's revealed to be three Shy Guys stacked on top of each other, to Watt's confusion.
  • Cruel and Unusual Death: Waluigi kills himself by smashing a Fake Smash Ball through his ear, the resulting explosion leaving only his torso and legs intact with his spine hanging out the top.
  • Dark Reprise: "Disperazione" has a somber rendition of "Lifelight", the main theme of Super Smash Bros. Ultimate, as a recurring motif. As Ultimate is the latest game in the series, and heavily implied to be the final game in the series (at least for a long while), it represents Waluigi forever missing his chance at being in Super Smash Bros..
  • Decomposite Character: In Vs Sonic.exe, Encore Boyfriend was just Boyfriend as a Mobian, Girlfriend presumably being the same had her sprites been finished. Their Lost Levels counterparts, Rappasaurus Rex and Chargin' Chelsey, are instead separate characters with their own designs and backstories.
  • Denser and Wackier: Most of the Mario Mix Originals are based off of Mario parodies or otherwise more lighthearted things related to Mario, compared to the darker songs from the Vs Sonic.exe mixes.
    • And then there's "???", the "Omnipresent" mix, which has an upbeat instrumental and features the Mario Mix cast jumping a monkey in a basketball court with goofy-looking ads on the barriers in front of the audience, in stark contrast to the tense Last Stand that is the original.
  • Despair Event Horizon: By the time of "Disperazione", Waluigi has long passed the breaking point, planning to end his life via a Fake Smash Ball.
  • Devious Dolphins: The dolphin from "MARIO IS MISSING" and "Back Ride" is this, Played for Laughs. They have the scowl, grin and mustache of a Dastardly Whiplash, small red devil horns, and the latter song even shows they have a pentagram on their back fin.
  • Downer Ending:
    • "Dire Attempt 2401" ends with the Boos dragging Luigi farther into the depths of the fountain, Mario calling out for his brother as he's completely helpless to stop them.
    • "Mirror Mode" ends with Mario losing to his fake and being enslaved like the others.
    • "HEAR ITS CRY" ends with Mario still impaled by the Blood Whistle.
  • Driven to Suicide: At the end of "Disperazione", Waluigi smashes the Fake Smash Ball he's held for the whole song against his head, killing him instantly.
  • "Everyone Dies" Ending: Played for Laughs, as the last screen we see of Chaos Mario and Boyfriend in "Fatal Error" is of the two of them dead after being swarmed by every entity in the level, before showing an N64 crash screen. Made much goofier and less depressing due to the nature of the the source mod.
  • Evil vs. Evil:
    • PS135 and Xenophanes, along with their respective souls, face off against each other in "Console War".
    • "Free-for-All" sees Emperor M face off against MX and Lord X, the two characters he serves as an Expy of.
  • Expy: All of characters introduced in the non-Original Mario Mixes are Mario takes on the cast of Vs. Sonic.exe, or in the case of "Dire Attempt 2401", Friday Night Funkin' — Below the Depths.
    • PS135 is the counterpart to Sonic.exe/Xenophanes, being a large and lanky demonic entity that takes on the form of the series' main protagonist and kills off the cast of their respective series to serve as their playthings. He is also heavily inspired by Mighty.ZIP from Friday Night Funkin' D-Sides, starting out his first song in a form almost indistinguishable from the real deal only to distort and send the song off the rails. Like Mighty.ZIP, he also has a segment where he takes a break from singing and instead speaks in rhymes.
    • Charles Mariotinet is the counterpart to Majin Sonic, being a cheerful yet odd looking version of Mario that sings using instruments, in this case the soundfont used to make "Bob-omb Battlefield" from Super Mario 64. To contrast with Majin Sonic having the face of Masato Nishimura, a level designer for Sonic the Hedgehog CD and the voice actor for Sonic for that game, Mariotinet has the face and name of Mario's voice actor Charles Martinet.
    • Morio.mov is Sunky.MPEG's counterpart, being a fun-sized, dopey version of the series' main character with a bastardized name and a lesser known file extension tacked onto the end. Instead of cereal, Morio loves soup.
    • Hotmetal is the counterpart to Coldsteel, being an intentionally poor quality OC (i.e. poor recolor of Mario/Sonic) with an incredibly edgy and egotistical personality. Hotmetal's name was even chosen to directly contrast Coldsteel's.
    • G0nzales/Gabriella is the counterpart to Needlem0use/Sarah, being the spirit of a missing woman possessing a video game — interestingly, rather than possessing a copy of Super Mario All Stars like how Sarah resides in a beta compilation for the Genesis Sonic games, Gabriella is instead in a copy of Paper Mario: The Thousand-Year Door, with her Mario form named after Mario's wrestling persona during the Glitz Pit chapter, the Great Gonzales, and the song taking place in Rogueport's town square, more specifically in front of the gallows.
    • Cooper is the Luther to Gabriella's Sarah. Both him and Luther were the closest to their friend group's token girl (Luther and Sarah were best friends and Gabriella and Cooper were seemingly dating), both ended up as victims of said girl's wrath after she died, leading to their deaths and possession of the closest ally of the protagonist of their respective games (Luther becomes Tails and Cooper becomes Koops), who eventually rebel against their former friend with a weapon made out of one of each game's respective macguffins (Luther gets a Blue Chaos Emerald Axe and Cooper gets a Diamond Star Scythe).
    • Emperor M is the Mario Mix counterpart to Lord X and MX, residing in his own twisted variation of the Mario universe and being able to use the Hammer Suit and Tanooki Tail at the same time. The whole world also distorts around him once he drops his Mario disguise. He also has Lord X's Medium Awareness.
    • L 2401 is based off Sink from Friday Night Funkin' — Below the Depths, being an otherwise normal version of a specific protagonist, just trapped in an awful situation — whereas Sink is Sonic, chained to a landmine at the bottom of Labyrinth Zone, L 2401 is Luigi, being perpetually pulled down into the depths of the castle courtyard's fountain by a group of Boos.
    • Framed is based off Curse, a character that didn't make the final cut in the original mod, who is caught in a dire situation and is forced to travel across worlds because of it. Compared to Curse, Framed is more based around Super Mario Sunshine, having remained framed for Shadow Mario's crimes. As Professor E. Gadd was the only one to believe Mario's case, he was able to fix up FLUDD, though he eventually passed of old age, and since then, FLUDD had been Mario's only friend.
    • Rappasaurus Rex and Chargin' Chelsey are the counterparts to Boyfriend and Girlfriend's redesigns for the Encore remixes. Where Encore BF and GF are, for all intents and purposes, just Boyfriend and Girlfriend with an Adaptation Species Change, Rex and Chelsey are similar but different characters and expys rather than reskins, with Rex even having an entirely different voice from Boyfriend. Encore BF and GF are Mobians (BF being a bunny, while Encore GF's species wasn't officially revealed before the mod's cancellation), while Rex and Chelsey are Mario enemies, specifically a Rex and Chargin' Chuck, both which first appeared in Super Mario World to draw a further connection to the main week and PS135, as well as reference the Orb Glitch.
    • The Waluigi in "Disperazione" is based off Red Mist Squidward, being a rendition of the character that's entered a depression and decided to end it all after a certain event. In Waluigi's case, it was consistently being snubbed at being in Super Smash Bros. and being stuck as an Assist Trophy.
    • The Baby Mario in "Nakisakebu" is based off Purin, though is more based on its appearance in creepypasta game Yoshi.exe, being a normally innocent character that raises a lot of questions about what became of him and how exactly the world around him is a hellish mess.
    • Subverted for "Measure Up", as MatPat remains the opponent of the song.
    • Mari from "Unstoppable Force" is based on Hog, existing in a bootleg of Super Mario World, dubbed "Mari Pizza World", and serving as an alternate version of Mario, who, himself, has become the entity Cornered through a similar universal overlap to the one that caused the Sonic of Hog's universe to become Scorched.
    • Jumpman in "KILL SCREEN" takes cues from Glitchy Red, being the original incarnation of a character (Mario for Jumpman, Glitchy Red representing the Pokemon trainer from the first generation), who's had their legacy taken from them after they've been replaced by a new character (Once again, Mario for Jumpman, and Glitchy Red alluding to how there's always new trainers every new generation). To further add to the reference, Jumpman Turns Red mid-song, sporting a glitchier look similar to Glitchy Red.
    • Ultima Weapon is a version of Zephaniah, being based on secondary characters from somewhat obscure isometric 3D games (Mighty from SegaSonic the Hedgehog for Zephaniah, Geno from Super Mario RPG for Ultima Weapon) that got more exposure due to reappearing in a more recent game (Mighty came back for Sonic Mania Plus, while Super Mario RPG got a remake). Both of them also sport a purple color scheme, and both of them break into rhyme midway through their respective songs.
  • Expy Coexistence: Some of the original songs have the Mario Mix characters interacting with their Vs. Sonic.exe inspirations.
    • "CONSOLE WAR" has Sonic.exe/Xenophanes, Soul Tails, Soul Knuckles and Soul Eggman face off against PS135, Soul Luigi, Soul Peach, and Soul Yoshi/Oogtar respectively, as a mashup of "Triple Trouble" and "MARIO IS MISSING".
    • "Hired", Mario Mix's take on "For Hire", primarily stars Dorkly's version of Mario from the Sonic for Hire web series. Dorkly's version of Sonic from the same series, being the title character and the opponent of the original song, briefly appears to duet with Boyfriend before being unceremoniously shot in the head by Mario. Although Downplayed, as the characters themselves are not expies of each other, only their songs.
    • "Free-for-All" is a, well, free-for-all between Emperor M, MX and Lord X. That means this song features an expy of an expy facing off against both of his originators.
  • Eyes Do Not Belong There: PS135 does not have normal eyes. Instead, he has a ginormous red eye in his mouth. Said mouth is constantly opened at a 90 degree angle as soon as he reveals it.
  • Face-Revealing Turn: After spending the entire song with his back towards the camera (excluding the short ''Super Mario World'' segment with his face visible), Mario finally turns to face it at the end of "MIRROR MODE", revealing a gaping mouth and pitch black eyes, confirming that he's fallen under PS135's control.
  • The Fourth Wall Will Not Protect You: The thumbnail for "Tyrant" has Emperor M leaning on the "Cycles Mario Mix" bar while pushing the song title bar up with his other hand. During the song itself, he turns to face the screen and chuckles before turning back to Boyfriend.
  • Formula-Breaking Episode:
    • Most Mario Mix videos are static images with the song playing over it, sometimes with transitions or short animations — "BF's Funklamity" however is a full-on animation in the style of the original Castle Calamity shorts, set to Boyfriend singing a rendition of the athletic theme from Super Mario World 2: Yoshi's Island, in reference to how the song was used in the original Mario's Castle Calamity. In addition, this song doesn't have an opponent, meaning Boyfriend does all the singing himself.
    • Unlike the other videos up to that point, the whole video for "OWO" is shown like an actual Friday Night Funkin' mod, with full animations for Mawio and Boyfriend all throughout.
  • Freeze-Frame Bonus: During "Storm", the first time Wega starts singing only in jumpscare sounds and flashing the screen with his face, a highly compressed image of (presumably) the channel's ratio of not subscribed/subscribed viewers is snuck into there for only a couple frames. May cross over with Subliminal Advertising or Take That! due to how infamous the statistic is for being shoved in the viewer's face.
  • Gender Flip:
    • Mari is female, unlike the male Hog.
    • The replacement for the male Sanic, Mawio, is female.
  • Get Out!: Misfire screams "Now get OUT!" at Boyfriend at the end of "Insert", followed by a Smash to Black and the sound of a door slamming.
  • Go-Karting with Bowser: In "???", murderers like PS135, Emperor M, and Fajer play basketball on the same team as heroic characters like Morio.mov, Charles Mariotinet, and Retro.
  • Hanging Around: In the background of "Nakisakebu", the green Yoshi can be seen hanging on a noose, likely as a result of... whatever the Baby Mario did to him.
  • Idle Animation: Starting at around 1:48 during Emperor M's song, "Tyrant", M drops his mic, sits down and summons what appears to be a Nintendo Switch to play with. He puts it away and gets serious again just before the next beat drop. Notably, he's still heard singing during this portion of the song, so whether this will translate to the playable version of the song or is just a visual gag for the Youtube video is unclear.
  • I'm a Humanitarian: The Baker cooks the corpses of dead Marios and bakes them into her cakes.
  • Impaled with Extreme Prejudice: Mario is impaled by the Blood Whistle near the middle of "HEAR ITS CRY".
  • In Name Only:
    • "Hired" has very little in common with its base song, "For Hire", besides sharing the same hiring motif. The former's structure sounds nothing like the latter, and it even includes an original section where Dorkly Sonic, the opponent in "For Hire", shows up to assist Boyfriend, whereas Dorkly Mario didn't appear in said song. Dorkly Sonic doesn't even have the same chromatic scale.
    • "OwO", the Mario Mix for "Too Fest", doesn't resemble the song it's based on that much either, being a lot slower-paced, having a different structure to its melody and tapping into a vastly different facet of early 2000's internet culture compared to Sanic. It could be mistaken for an Original without the subtitle attaching it to "Too Fest".
  • Interface Spoiler:
    • Subverted in the case of "Disperazione", "Storm" and "Nakisakebu", with the former originally hiding what song it was, as well as its inspiration, and the latter pretending to be dubbed "Luigi Stare" to fool those watching the premiere that it would be a normal Luigi song before the surprise reveal of Wega.
    • "Nakisakebu" took this subversion a step further, not even revealing the opponent until the premiere and instead only showing Pico's Yoshi form.
    • "Salutation" subverted this trope even more, once again not revealing the opponent or the song of choice for the remix until after the premiere, but this time only having a red gradient as the background. Needless to say, nobody expected the song that came out of the premiere.
  • Joke Character: MariObama and Hotmetal.MariObama in that he's a stickman version of Obama wearing Mario's cap, and Hotmetal in that he's a dead ringer for the infamous Coldsteel, and neither of these characters are meant to be taken seriously in the slightest
  • Jump Scare
    • In "HEAR ITS CRY", the second phase is started with the screen suddenly going black and Mario can be heard screaming loudly before cutting back to him with the Blood Whistle impaled in him.
    • Wega's song "Storm" is full of this, due to the nature of the character as a cheap, goofy screamer image. Parts of his song even replaces his voice with a jumpscare sound effect that flashes his face on the screen every time he sings a note.
  • Lighter and Softer:
    • "Disperazione" compared to "Doomsday". While "Doomsday" was based on a creepypasta about suicide, "Disperazione" is based on a meme relating to Waluigi being omitted from the Super Smash Bros. Ultimate roster in favor of other Mario characters, including a literal plant. Waluigi's reasons for being suicidal are more petty than Squidward's, and his suicide weapon, rather than being a real shotgun, is a Fake Smash Ball. "Doomsday" ended with Squidward shooting himself, leaving blood on the screen and ending in silence. "Disperazione" ends with Waluigi hitting himself with the Fake Smash Ball, blowing up the top half of his body but with less blood present. And instead of silence, the Smash announcer says "GAME!" possibly indicating that Waluigi will just come back to life like all Smash characters after a match.
    • "Omnipresent" was a seriously played song about Boyfriend battling many horror themed Sonic characters at once in a nearly hopeless battle. "???" is a bizarre dream about a monkey challenging a large portion of the Mario Mix cast to a game of basketball and beating them all effortlessly.
  • Meet Your Early-Installment Weirdness: "KILL SCREEN" has Mario facing off against his original incarnation, Jumpman, who is none too happy about Mario replacing him.
  • Me's a Crowd: During "BF's Funklamity", one of the gags has him notice multiple Luigis behind him. Boyfriend is so shocked he loses a life on the spot.
  • Meaningful Name: Shy Gal's song is named "Shortstack". She is revealed to just be three normal Shy Guys on top of each other, literally making her a short stack.
  • Mythology Gag:
    • PS135's colorscheme in his true form is taken from one of the various palettes Mario can end up with after performing the powerup incrementation glitch in Super Mario World.
    • The appearances and voices of Soul Peach and Yoshi are based on their designs from the Super Mario World cartoon. Luigi is a mashup of Super Mario World and his normal appearance, with his red and white striped socks taken from the Mario & Luigi games.
    • Soul Luigi's sections in "MARIO IS MISSING V2" lift some soundfonts from Luigi's Mansion. Most notably, some of his segments have him whistling instead of singing, using the same soundfont from the aforementioned game.
    • At the beginning of "MARIO IS MISSING" and "CONSOLE WAR", Luigi's version of the scream Tails makes is him yelling HEEELP! from "Mama Luigi", the final episode of the Super Mario World cartoon.
    • "Disk Driven" contains multiple samples from Super Mario 64, such as the camera turning and failing to turn sound effects, the sound of an enemy exploding, and a few voice grunts from Mario. In addition, the location of the song is set in the hallway leading to Dire, Dire Docks and the second Bowser fight.
    • Rather than reuse the normal Friday Night Funkin' countdown as in "Endless", "Disk Driven" instead uses the countdown from Super Smash Bros. 64.
    • In "MAR10 Day", Mariotinet is wearing a Wario costume, referencing Mario's Wario alt he has in all the Super Smash Bros. games aside from Ultimate.
    • Sitting on the couch during "Insert" is Antrollia, a character from a mod Misfire previously composed for.
    • "Shortstack" takes place in Shy Guy's Toy Box, the main location of Paper Mario's fourth chapter and where most of the game's Shy Guy variants are located. Watt's appearance in the song is a reference to her joining the party in this chapter.
    • "BF's Funklamity" is based off the Mario's Castle Calamity animations, having Boyfriend take the role of the one trying to blow up the castle and getting subjected to different highjinks in the process. Several gags from the animations are referenced in the song as well.
    • During the quick back and forth in the beginning of "Free-for-All", the camera zooms in on Emperor M's and MX's faces during their turns, referencing Misfire's remix of "Game Over" with Madeline in Boyfriend's place. The song itself also features a remixed part of Game Over's main melody in some parts.
    • "Nakisakebu" is one as a whole to Yoshi.EXE, taking place in a deranged castle where a tormented Baby Mario and a now-dead Yoshi reside. The premise of another Yoshi (in this case, Pico) investigating the site soon after is in reference to the game's fanmade remaster.
    • The midpoint of "Unstoppable Force" cuts to a screen showing various images pertaining to Cornered displayed in a messy, nonsensical manner, referencing the common thumbnail style of "Manual Blast"'s composer. Some images from said composer's thumbnails also show up in the image, to feed into the reference more.
  • Oh, Crap!:
    • Throughout "Ice Cold Cake", Luigi is staring at The Baker in pure horror, likely having realised just what she's been using as ingredients for her cakes, said ingredients being the Mario corpses visible in the background. Given that The Baker is staring directly at him with a crazed smile, Luigi is possibly also afraid that he'll be next.
    • At the end of "Disperazione", Boyfriend's eyes widen in horror when Waluigi smashes the Fake Smash Ball against his own head. Cue the explosion, with Boyfriend protecting himself by putting up a shield.
  • Ominous Visual Glitch: Once Cornered takes over in "Unstoppable Force", the initially upbeat song gets cut off with visual glitches that take over the screen, and from then on, the screen sometimes glitches during the song, sometimes the glitches being an overlay of Super Mario World's gameplay.
  • O.O.C. Is Serious Business: While Charles is normally shown to be a Perpetual Smiler, when PS135 drops his disguise during "Powered Up" in an attempt on BF's life, he looks absolutely pissed. His Eyes Always Shut open up and half of his face is cast in shadow, akin to how Majin Sonic's does when he gets serious.
  • Original Generation: All the characters from the Sonic.exe remixes (except for Mawio) are original creations serving as expies of their Sonic.exe counterparts.
  • Orwellian Retcon:
    • When both songs were first released, "Running" was regarded as the Mario Mix for "Cycles" while "Tyrant" was an Original. Later, this was swapped, so now "Tyrant" is the "Cycles" mix while "Running" is an Original. This also retroactively makes "Running" the first Original Mix, as it predates "HEAR ITS CRY". Not helping things that MAR10 Day (Slaybells Mario Mix) featured MX instead of Emperor M, the latter of which is the Lord X Expy.
    • "Accused" was originally regarded as a "Never Ever" song as Fire believed it to be "too low, even for him", but it's now regarded as a Mario Mix Original. The opponent of said song is a modified model of Luigi hailing from VRChat.
  • Rhymes on a Dime: Just like Mighty.ZIP did in his origin mod, PS135 speaks in rhyme midway through "Illusion", to hammer home how helpless Boyfriend is against him.
"Go ahead, and rap battle me if you must."
"Your skin will be eaten up, as if it were crust."
"You may rest in this state of confusion."
"For you are trapped, in my forest of illusions."
  • Ultima Weapon, the official Mario Mix version of Mighty.ZIP, takes this even further partway through "Follow", actually singing his rhyme to the melody of Beware The Forest's Mushrooms.
"Entering my forest came with ease"
"Lost, here inside, none will hear your pleas"
"Hear a voice above, it is calling your name"
"Something about it just isn't the same!"
  • Retraux: "Power Rush" and "Shell Slam" have a heavy VHS filter to sell the old-school feeling, and even have 480p as their highest quality.
  • Russian Reversal: Boyfriend's 28th attempt to destroy the Castle has him being blown up by it. Somehow.
  • Shout-Out:
    • Gangsta Mario's design and vocals in "Crank" are heavily inspired by SiIvaGunner's rip of "Dad Battle", which combines the song with "Crank Dat Super Mario" and replaces Daddy Dearest with Gangsta Mario.
    • The ending of "Soup" ends with an image of Markiplier reaching the end screen of I HATE YOU.
    • "Free-for-All" contains multiple motifs from "Game Over", another song featuring MX.
    • At a couple of points during "OwO", Mawio and Boyfriend both enact the Caramelldansen dance together, even singing the chorus motif of that song together during those sections.
    • Ultima Weapon's lyrics partway through "Follow" reference "Waltz of the Forest".
  • The Speechless: Although the castle is the opponent in "BF's Funklamity", the only time it ever "sings" is during a gag where it silently brings out notes that Boyfriend can't copy. Boyfriend's the only one truly singing throughout the song.
  • Stylistic Suck:
    • Just like his original counterpart, Hotmetal and his song "Punk" are made with deliberately poor quality, including things like the baseline for the song being made with the default FL Studio instruments and Hotmetal's voice sounding like it was recorded using a crappy microphone.
    • "Salutation" is this overexaggerated, with the quality being deliberately bad as reference to the song it remixes, repeatedly off-key and off-beat vocals and poorly-drawn versions of different members of the Mario Mix cast around a doodle of Boyfriend.
  • Surprisingly Creepy Moment: While goofy in nature, "50R3tr0" ends on a sudden creepy note, with what sounds like distorted screaming, a gradual static overlay, and Mr. Retro getting knocked out of the game. And then, nothing but silence for the last 10 seconds.
  • Title Drop: At the end of "Fatal Error", the emulation the song takes place in crashes with a window popping up, saying "Fatal Error: Stopping emulation".
  • Token Evil Teammate: While the other three souls were puppeteered by PS135, Oogtar went insane after watching his village burn and willingly joined him. Downplayed in that he was driven insane first.
  • Totem Pole Trench: The Shy Gal in "Shortstack" is just three Shy Guys on top of each other, one wearing a wig, one standing on a pair of fake legs, and the last with nuggets in the eye sockets of his mask.
  • Troubled Fetal Position: "Power Rush" opens with a quick frame of Gabriella curled up on the floor, shadows over her eyes with G0nzales standing behind her before transitioning into the song proper.
  • Updated Re-release: Mario is Missing V2]] is somewhat the same song with the same 6 batch of singers (Boyfriend, PS135, and his victims), but with a new instrumental, some new whistling for Luigi, a new voice for Yoshi, and notes were either rearranged.
  • Villains Out Shopping: "MAR10 Day" is PS135, MX, Mariotinet and Morio.mov all celebrating March 10th, or Mario Day, together. MX is even wearing a ripped off Toad cap on top of his hat.
  • Visual Pun: "Fatal Error" features the leitmotif from "The World Revolving" in parts. The song's opponent is also Chaos Mario, with every enemy, collectible, and even pieces of the environment being pulled towards him. So the world really ''is'' revolving, around a character associated with the word Chaos to boot.
  • Wolfpack Boss:
    • PS135 sicks all four of his souls onto Boyfriend and Mario in the final segment of "MARIO IS MISSING" and during "MIRROR MODE", respectively.
    • "???" has Monkey 32 face off against a total of 11 opponents, those being PS135, Morio.mov, Charles Mariotinet, Hotmetal, Plush Luigi, Framed, Emperor M, Mari, Rufus, Mr. Retro and Fajer.
  • Would Hurt a Child: Both PS135 and MX qualify. The former killed Yoshi, who is portrayed as childlike in the cartoon, and drove Oogtar to insanity. The latter enjoys tormenting Lucas, as usual.
