S3, P1 - Ep 1: A Late Start To A Wacky World - Part 1

As a young witch with no magic reads a book detailing the events caused by All For One on the Boiling Isles, her mother gives her words of encouragement. When she buys some merchandise from the Owl Lady, she comes across a new face.

This chapter contains examples of:

  • Adaptational Heroism: Instead of being a bully to Willow, in this story Boscha's one of her closest friends.
  • Adaptational Jerkass: The twins see their younger sister as freak for being a Quirk user.
  • Adaptational Nice Girl:
    • Amity is much nicer and less haughty than in the beginning of the show.
    • Surprisingly, Odalia seems a much more better parent than her real life counterpart, caring for Amity’s wellbeing and happiness.
  • Adaptational Relationship Overhaul:
    • Because Amity's parents didn't force her to end her friendship with Willow when they were little, the two girls are on much better terms than in canon beginning. She also has a better relationship with her mother than her older siblings and father.
    • With Amity is a regular customer of hers, Eda is more familiar and friendlier with the girl than at the beginning of the show.
  • Adaptational Superpower Change: In canon, Amity is a powerful young witch that specialises in abomination magic. Here in the story she was born without magic due to a defective bile sac and instead is born with the One For All power.
  • All of the Other Reindeer: Amity is ostracized by a good majority of the people in Bonesborough for being a witch who couldn’t use magic but instead had a Quirk. Even her own siblings and father are cold to her. Ironically, she has a better relationship with her mother.
  • Arranged Friendship: Averted. In this story she's friends with Boscha by choice.
  • Badass Bookworm: Amity loves reading and is more than capable of defending herself as a wielder of One For All.
  • Big Brother Bully: Amity sees the twins as this, not wanting much to do with her.
  • Call a Rabbit a "Smeerp": Witches in the Boiling Isles that were given Quirks by All For One are called "Unique" and are often shunned by their peers as it came at the cost of their magical abilities.
  • Career-Ending Injury: Downplayed and Played With. When All For One gave Alador a Quirk against his will, he couldn't perform any sort of magic, including the creation of abomination for his inventions. It took giving it away and 3 years for his bile sac to show signs of recovery and then a further decade to it full return to its its former splendour for him to get back to business.
  • Creative Sterility: Amity remarks that the Emperor’s Coven was never really creative with naming their fugitives, e.g. the Owl Lady.
  • Defrosting Ice Queen: According Alador, before Shigaraki came along, Odalia was a far more distant woman. Far more reserved and hardly ever showed love to anyone.
  • Designer Babies: Amity is implied to be this due to All For One's experimentation.
  • Discard and Draw:
    • If a witch is given a Quirk, they lose with ability to use magic as a result. This due to Bile Sac shrivelling up from it. Even if the Quirk gets taken back, it would take 3 years to show signs of recovery and further 10 years to fully restore, as in Alador's case.
    • While Odalia no longer has her oracle magic, she instead has a Super-Strength based power given to her by Shigaraki 14 years ago.
  • Does Not Know His Own Strength: Amity claims to have fixed this problem.
  • Dramatic Irony: Amity believes that f it wasn’t for All For One experimenting on her family, she could’ve probably lived a far better life. Unbeknownst to her, her mother and father would've been Abusive Parents.
  • Dysfunctional Family: Amity claims her family is this due to All For One's meddling.
  • Education Mama: Like in the show, Odalia cares a lot about Amity's academic performance.
  • Evil Is Not a Toy: The Blights found this out the hard way when Odalia tried to make a deal with All For One and she, her husband and youngest daughter got experimented on with his Quirks. Its described what he had done to the mother and father was akin to butchering them and became pariahs in their community for harboring him in their house.
  • Eviler than Thou: All For One showed himself to be this to Odalia.
  • Familiar: Like most Witches, Eda sees her Palisman as an extensions of herself. In The Boiling Isles, losing a Palisman was akin to losing a child.
  • Fantastic Racism: If you had a Quirk, you would be a target for harassment. there are only 200 "Unique" children that exist in Bonesborough, and all of them, for the most part, were encouraged to keep to themselves by The Emperor's Coven.
  • Good Parents: Odalia is this to her children, especially Amity letting her know she can still be powerful protector of the Isles without having magic. Boscha's mother is trying to get her to have a better attitude.
  • Helicopter Parents: Odalia coddled Amity and showered her in gifts since she was little to make her feel loved despite the Fantastic Racism she suffers from.
  • Heroic Build: Downplayed. For a girl her age, she has a surprising amount of muscle.
  • Heroic Self-Deprecation: Despite Odalia's words of encouragement, Amity doesn’t believe she can be anything of worth to anyone, being a witch without magic, instead cursed with a Quirk she didn’t even want but was forced to have. She believes she shouldn’t have been born.
  • Homeschooled Kids: She was this until she turned 14.
  • I Have No Son!: Many of the 200 "Unique" children weren't wanted by their parents. They were haunting reminders of what Shigaraki had done to their home 14 years ago.
  • I Just Want to Be Normal: Amity laments that All For One had destroyed whatever semblance of a normal life she could’ve had by taking away her chance to have magic.
  • I Just Want to Have Friends: Despite having Willow and Boscha, she wishes she had more friends.
  • In Spite of a Nail: Amity still dyes her hair, but not because she was forced to by her mother (in fact she discouraged it). She did it to herself so that she'd look more like a siblings out of spite towards them.
  • Intergenerational Friendship: Eda, who is in her 50s, has one with Amity, who just turned 14.
  • Jerkass Realization: Its implied this happened to Odalia after her deal with Shigaraki went wrong.
  • Kidnapped for Experimentation: This happened to many witches during the war.
  • Locked Out of the Loop:
    • Fortunately, All For One was chased off before Amity was born and find out he succeeded in recreating One For All through her.
    • Emperor Belos didn’t blame the Blights for All For One's actions, but according Amity, conversations with him had been very hostile lately. It seems he's beginning to realize that they were, in fact, somewhat responsible for enabling him to almost take the Boiling Isles from him during the war.
  • Lonely Rich Kid: Amity is this like the beginning of the show but for different reasons. Her family's wealth attracted more enemies than allies or people who would wish to get on their good side, only to try and drain money from them. At her introduction she only considers Willow and Boscha her real friends due to seeing who she is beyond her family name and riches.
  • Luminescent Blush: Amity does this out of embarrassment when her mother tells her she's read her diary.
  • Mistaken for Related: Amity at one point considers Toshiko to be related to All For One by blood due to having the same last name. Its a bit more complicated than that.
  • Mundane Utility: The Construction Coven not only creates tools, pillars statues and other structures using earth but also fabrics for clothing.
  • My Beloved Smother: Odalia can be this to Amity.
  • My Friends... and Zoidberg: Odalia sees Boscha as this because she’s a rude, little girl who doesn’t know how to behave herself around others.
  • Mythology Gag: Luz meets Amity almost the same way Ochako meets Izuku: using her Quirk to stop her from falling to the ground.
  • Narrow Annihilation Escape: According to Eda, Owlbert only just barely got away from the massive explosion that destroyed Gravesfield via Portal Door.
  • Noblewoman's Laugh: Averted. Odalia has a more natural laugh.
  • One-Winged Angel: Belos used his sludge monster form to drive off All For One back to his dimension with no means to come back. According to the history books, it was a Godzilla Threshold and passes it off as a kind of abomination magic.
  • Only Friend: Amity considers Willow to be this, as Boscha only seems to hang out with her by coincidence.
  • Oxymoronic Being: Amity sees herself as a walking paradox: A witch that can't do any real magic.
  • Parents as People: While Alador does love Amity, he's reluctant to even look at her in the eyes on the best of days due to being a constant reminder of what All For one did to them.
  • Pet the Dog: Luz's (or shall we say Toshiko's) first meeting with Amity is this. She saw the girl falling to the ground after bumping into her and she used her "Vines" Quirk on her because she didn't want to see Amity fall, and then she wished her a good day. Even after everything she's been through, Luz still hasn't lost her heart.
  • Power Copying: Presumably with the doctor's help, All For One had a copy of his late brother's original Quirk. Because he couldn’t get the 2 powers to merge within his body, he decided to have them merged when creating a child, then the result would be One For All.
  • Prestige Peril: The Blight name came their fair share of enemies. Most were political but others genuinely hated her family for harbouring Shigaraki in their home during the war.
  • Purple Is Powerful: Her Quirk produces purple sparks from her fists when activated.
  • Questionable Consent: Its heavily implied that Amity's conception was under All For One's Quirk experiment.
  • Red Baron: Shigaraki is known as "The Interloper" by the denizens of the Boiling Isles.
  • Replacement Goldfish: It appears Amity was conceived to be this to All For One.
  • Required Secondary Powers: Amity was born with a bit more muscle than most girls her age. She had to, less she accidentally used it and did irreparable damage to herself with her Quirk. She also had to learn strength control that she didn't accidently break something or someone.
  • The Reveal: Shigaraki's "brief" visit to the Boiling Isles 24 years ago was actually a 10-year long war until Belos drove him off. During that time a lot has changed.
  • The Rival: Alador is well-known in the Boiling Isles for being Darius's.
  • Secret Diary: Just like in the show, Amity has one. Her mother recommends she hides it better as it was easy for her to find and read it.
  • Shrinking Violet: Odalia notes Willow is scared of her own shadow.
  • Stronger with Age: Odalia's Quirk allows her to gain physical strength over time.
  • Super-Empowering: Alador's Quirk allowed the passage of his power down to someone else, which he had done immediately after Amity was born, when coming into contact with his DNA.
  • Superhuman Trafficking: All For One's guilty of doing this to witches.
  • Superpowerful Genetics: Amity's birth was essentially a eugenics experiment by All For One to "get back what was rightfully his" with the 2 replica Quirks, including his long dead brother. This resulted her not having magic but becoming a natural born One For All wielder.
  • Suspiciously Specific Denial: Amity thinks Toshiko is kind of cute. In a platonic sort of way, of course… Totally…
  • Too Smart for Strangers: Odalia taught Amity to be this.
  • The Unfavorite: Amity seems to be this to Alador.
  • Unwitting Test Subject: Many unfortunate witches were these for All For One's Quirk experiments. This included the parents of the Blight kids that were given Quirks against their will and painfully so after Odalia was foolish enough to try and make a deal with the Card-Carrying Villain.
  • Used to Be a Sweet Kid: Inverted. Odalia admits she was a brat when she was Amity's age and only got better when she grew up.
  • The War Just Before: 24 years before the start of the story the first All For One tried to usurp the rule of the isles from Emperor Belos resulting in what is now called the Ten-Year War.
  • Wham Episode: With his experiments on the witch population, he successfully replicated the One For All! He did it by giving replica powers that made it in the first place (Quirk Bestowal and Stockpile) to 2 witch parents and letting them procreate with the child inheriting them. Who's the child is question? Amity Blight! Not only but Luz is going by Toshiko Shigaraki who Amity notices is the same surname as All For One.
  • Wham Line: Luz gives when she gives Amity a different name from what she was born with.
Luz: Toshiko. Toshiko Shigaraki. A pleasure to meet you.
  • What Does She See in Him?: A platonic version. Odalia doesn't understand why Amity sees Boscha as a genuine friend and thinks she can do better.
  • With Friends Like These...: Amity sees Boscha as this, often making jokes at her expense.
  • Writing About Your Crime: All For One had a journal detailing his Quirk experiments, including recreating One For All. The Blights own the only copy.
  • You Are Better Than You Think You Are: Odalia gives this speech to Amity who is nervous about going to school with her magical peers.
Odalia: Amity. You need to have more faith in yourself. You might not be able to use Magic, but you have a Gift. A Gift that, while it was forced upon you by That Man, at the very least you’ll be stronger than all the rest. Magic can only take a Witch so far when they’re restricted to only one thing. You’re Unique. Don’t forget about that.
  • You Remind Me of X: When Eda first lays eyes on Luz, she remarks that she looked like someone she wished she never knew, the original All For One due to the similar hair and eye color.
