Slash: Rockin' in a nice hat since 1985

Born Saul Hudson on July 23, 1965 in Hampton, London, England. Considered to be one of the greatest guitarists in the world and his generation's most famous guitarist, Slash is best known as the lead guitarist in Guns N' Roses. After leaving the band in 1996 due to disagreements with Axl Rose, Slash played in the supergroup Velvet Revolver until it disbanded. Since then, he has released three solo albums: Slash, in which he collaborated with a set of guest musicians, and Apocalyptic Love and World on Fire, recorded with his band Myles Kennedy & The Conspirators.

In late 2015, Slash and Axl Rose began talking to each other again, which they hadn't done since Slash left GNR. Soon after, it was announced that Slash and Axl had buried the hatchet and that Slash would rejoin Guns N Roses. After 23 years of absence, Slash was playing in GNR again, and the band soon embarked on the "Not in This Lifetime..." tour.

Not to be confused with Slash Fic, although there is probably some overlap somewhere. This page is for tropes related to Slash's solo career and his work with Velvet Revolver. Please put tropes related to Slash's work in Guns N' Roses in its respective page.

No relation to the 2002 slasher film.

Slash gives examples of:

  • Character Tic: He's well known for settling into a spread-legged crouch and playing licks or solos with his guitar held vertically, although amusingly, he claims that he never noticed he was doing it until seeing his digital avatar in Guitar Hero III.
  • Cool Shades: Occasionally wears black sunglasses.
  • Dented Iron: At one point, he'd ingested so much drugs and alcohol he had to be put on a pacemaker in 2001 because his heart had swollen so large. He's fine now, and the batteries in the pacemaker have worn out so he's opted not to remove it.
  • Iconic Item: Along with his top hat and sunglasses, his Les Paul-style guitar (it's actually a custom-made instrument). When Gibson released a "Signature Series", Slash was impressed they replicated the one he used with "every single nick, scratch, and cigarette burn that my guitar has."
  • Massive Multiplayer Crossover: Given that like Santana Slash doesn't sing, his Self-Titled Album released in 2010 has everyone from Ozzy Osbourne to Fergie in vocals.
  • Murder Ballad: "30 Years to Life"
  • Obligatory Bondage Song: World on Fire's title track.
  • Older Than They Look: Doesn't look very different now than he did in the 90s.
  • Only Known by Their Nickname: It's extremely rare for him to be addressed by his birth name. He doesn't dislike it; it's just become synonymous with him.
  • "Sesame Street" Cred: He's got credits on two Disney Channel animated properties — he recorded "Kick It Up a Notch" for Phineas and Ferb The Movie: Across the 2nd Dimension, and later made a cameo as a Battle of the Bands judge in an episode of Milo Murphy's Law.
  • Signature Headgear: He is rarely seen without his iconic top hat.
  • Smoking Is Cool: He used to smoke a lot and be commonly be photographed with a cigarette hanging on his lips. He quit after his mother's death from lung cancer.
  • Step Up to the Microphone: While Myles Kennedy is Slash's current lead singer, bassist Todd Kerns has sung a few live songs (notably "Doctor Alibi", originally recorded by Lemmy).
