Looks like someone got cut down to size.

WARNING: Spoilers Off applies to Funny Moments pages per wiki policy. All spoilers will be unmarked.

While not as cartoonishly goofy as the original source material, it still manages to give audiences new laughs in its own way...but isn't shy to take some of that goofy charm with it.

General:

  • A Running Gag throughout the series is that each of the big named pirates get their own wanted posters showing off their bounties. With an escalation of each of the pirates smacking the poster out of their faces; Roger just lets it blow away, Alvida smacks it with her mace, Buggy smacks his aside, Arlong, Mihawk and Kuro slash through theirs with their respective main blades. But Don Krieg? He just grabs and crumples it up.
  • Some of the OST's titles are pretty hilarious. For example: "A Massive Piece of Goldfish Poop", "Marine with a Bad Haircut vs. Tough Guy Three Swords", "Gotta Feed the Brain" and so on.
  • Bloopers:
    • Alexander Maniatis (Kuro) tripped on the steps during the scene of his conversation with Sham and Buchi.
    • Later, Alexander's dramatic entrance through the double doors was ruined when said doors slammed in his face.
    • During Nami's fight scene with the marines at Morgan's base, Emily accidentally broke her staff.
    • In one scene, while spinning her staff Emily accidentally hits Inaki on the shoulder, and he doesn't even react.
    • Steven Ward announcing, with all the seriousness of Dracule Mihawk, that he had forgotten his next line. Before cracking up.
    • Jacob (Usopp) giving a very goofy, over-dramatic, almost YouTube-esque "WOAH" after kissing Celeste (Kaya).
    • Jeff (Buggy) does a take on his diss at Luffy to help Inaki with the scene...
Buggy: You're just a sad lonely boy who always loses at FIFA! (out of character) I was just helping him with the performance. Sorry.
    • A scene at Baratie where Inaki utters something you'd almost never expect Luffy to ever say:
Inaki: Sorry, I ate too much; I can't swallow this.
    • Inaki and Jacob both blank on their lines and end up getting trapped in a loop of saying "Nice" to each other six times total before turning to the camera as the others chuckle off-screen, something people noted as being so in-character it almost could have made it in.

Individual Episodes:

    open/close all folders
     Episode 1: Romance Dawn
  • Garp asks Roger if he has any last requests before his execution. He asks if they could remove his handcuffs because they were "starting to itch". That remark actually gets a few chuckles from the crowd.
  • When Luffy is introduced, he explains his desire to be King of the Pirates to a News Coo. When he asks if it wants to join his crew, it flies away.
    Luffy: Mutiny.
    • Even better? As Luffy's boat starts to sink, he manages to get to safety by stuffing himself into a barrel and quietly noting it was his "first day".
  • Zoro asks if members of Baroque works get a facial tattoo, and says that if so, he prefers number 1… while Flipping the Bird at Mr. 7. Which then leads to:
Mr. 7: To turn down Baroque Works is to forfeit your life.
Zoro: If they were that serious... they should have sent someone better than number 7.
  • Luffy starts telling Alvida everything Koby said about her below deck. As Luffy confidently relays everything, Koby is looking at the other boy and quietly begging him to shut up.
  • Shanks lightly admonishes Roux for almost dropping the chest with the Gum Gum fruit in it - calling it the most important item on board. He advises Roux treat it like a leg of lamb, because he'd never drop that.
  • When plotting their next course at sea Luffy decides they need to sneak into a Marine base to get the Map he needs to the Grand Line. Koby warns him it will be dangerous, and Luffy tries to comfort him by saying he's "stealthy". In the background, Alvida's burning ship explodes as Luffy falls asleep.
    • Earlier, Koby was muttering about his regrets and how he should have stayed on Alivda's ship. While said ship is actively burning down in the background.
  • Koby is disgusted and terrified of all the wanted posters up on the wall. Luffy's only concern is where his own face was.
  • As they plot their break in of the marine base, Luffy insists to Koby that more food is better and they got to "feed the brain".
    • Then as Zoro and Helmeppo's fight begins, Koby immediately ducks under the table for cover.
  • While Zoro is imprisoned, Helmeppo steals Zoro’s sword and is later seen practicing with it… while naked. When Zoro catches up, it’s left ambiguous as to what he’ll do in retaliation, until Helmeppo shows up later with most of his hair cut off, in the near exact style of his manga counterpart.
Luffy: (chuckling) What's wrong with his hair?
Zoro: (cracking a smile) Yeah, I might've done that.
    • What does Helmeppo do when Zoro barges in on him goofing around with Zoro's sword? Grab a Marine teddy bear (which has long hair just like him) to cover himself up with before cowering away. When Zoro threatens to do something worse than killing his quarry, one can be forgiven for jumping to conclusions.
  • It's very easy to miss, but when Luffy and Nami are looking for the map, Zoro can be seen in the background looking a bit lost as he wanders the base.
  • A Recurring Theme in the first episode is Zoro and Nami rejecting Luffy acknowledging them as his "crew", often times in unison. Special mention goes to their confrontation with Morgan that culminates in them all fighting together for the first time.
Morgan: The imposter, the pirate hunter and the prisoner. Fancy that. The three of you working together.
    Luffy: That's right. We're a crew!
Zoro/Nami: (at the same time) Nope, not a crew./Nope, not together.
  • Morgan really loves himself. Not only does he have a statue and paintings of himself in his office (said statue and one of the paintings are of him saving children), but he has a giant poster of himself on the outside of the base.
  • Shanks telling Luffy he won't take a kid onboard, and he already has an anchor. Luffy rebuffs that he's not an anchor and Shanks gestures to the kid's shirt that has the image and word "anchor" on it.
  • The alarms start to blare and Luffy asks what the alarms were for, hoping it wasn't because of them. Nami snarks that it must have been the other idiot pirates who broke in.
Luffy: Wow. What are the odds of that?
Nami: (quietly looks up at Luffy with an annoyed face)
    Luffy: (nervously laughing) Kidding.
  • The look on both Nami and Luffy's face as he grabs the safe and attempts to just yank it out of the ground.
    Nami: That's your idea?!
    Luffy: (straining) Yeah!
    • Soon after, Nami realizes that not only is it working, his arms are stretchy. She takes a moment to stare with a wide-eyed WTF look, before hurriedly trying to help him pull.
  • When Zoro places his third sword in his mouth, Luffy exclaims "So that's where it goes!", after wondering earlier where exactly it goes.
  • The manga's standard habit of Calling Your Attacks gets lampshaded here, when Zoro is incredulous at Luffy's cry of "Gum Gum Whip" before finishing off Morgan.
Luffy: All great fighters call out their finishing moves!
    Zoro: No, they don't.
    • Zoro's answer is even more hilarious when you notice that the manga/anime version of him has the longest names for his finishing attacks.
  • Immediately after the fight with Morgan, Nami notes that they need to get the (extremely heavy) safe containing the map to the Grand Line out of there. She starts looking for a rope with which to drag it... only to watch in surprise (and slight alarm) as Zoro casually lifts it onto his shoulder and begins walking away with it.
Nami: ...or we can do that.
  • Later, Zoro slams the safe on the boat.
    Nami: Careful with that!
Zoro: Whatever you say. Oh wait, I don't work for you.
Luffy: I'm sensing a little bit of tension amongst the crew.
    Zoro/Nami: Not a crew!
  • Just as Helmeppo is threatening the trio, Koby knocks him out with a punch before subsequently nursing his hand.
    Luffy: (overjoyed) Koby!?
Koby: God, that hurt! (beat) It also felt really good too.

Episode 2: The Man in the Straw Hat
  • Makino tiredly tells little Luffy to stop trashing her bar by practicing his new Devil Fruit abilities. When Shanks appears, Luffy attempts to show off again, with Makino sternly telling Luffy off.
    • Makino tries to advise Luffy by telling him "there's no such thing as a free lunch". Luffy clearly only hears the word "lunch" as he asks Makino if it was time to eat.
  • Luffy acts like an annoying younger sibling as Nami continues to try and unlock the safe. He even at one point leans onto Nami in an attempt to hear the safe sound through her other ear.
    Luffy: Is it open yet?
  • While Nami works on the safe and Luffy keeps annoying her, Zoro, who just wants to sleep, is annoyed by both of them.
Zoro: Will you two knock it off? I'm trying to take a nap.
Nami: Oh, I'm sorry. Were we interrupting your beauty sleep?
Zoro: Don't like what you see? Look away.
  • When the crew falls victim to Buggy's sleeping gas, Luffy hides the map by swallowing it whole.
    • After waking up and realizing their items had all been confiscated, Luffy immediately reaches for his hat. He sighs in relief to see it wasn't taken and Nami snarks it was a small blessing.
  • Luffy gets caught up in the pageantry of Buggy's circus and claps along with the captive audience before Nami angrily puts his hands down.
  • Luffy tells Buggy the East Blue knows of him because of his wanted poster, but Buggy hears it as "nose". He then immediately assumes Luffy was making fun of his nose. Later on, he nearly makes a nose pun and growls in frustration that it was now stuck in his head.
    • Both the townspeople and his crew audibly gasp when Luffy says it too. Evidently they already know how touchy and quick with assumptions he is with this matter.
  • A quick moment, but after Buggy's hand gasses Luffy again and punches him, it swiftly flips Luffy off as he passes out.
  • During the fight in the flashback between Shanks' and Higuma's crews, Lucky Roux's primary weapon of choice is the shank of lamb he was previously eating.
    • Yasopp can be seen calmly drinking in the background as his crewmates go to town on the bandits. He only puts down his drink and makes an effort to help when a bandit grabs onto Roux.
  • Zoro's less-than-impressed attitude throughout his confrontation with Cabaji.
    • When Cabaji asks if he remembers him, Zoro replies that he doesn't and he must be "some other homicidal, unicycle-riding clown".
    • About Cabaji's brother:
Cabaji: You cut his head off and stuffed it in a bag, all for a handful of Berry!
Zoro: [Beat] Okay, that does sound like me.
    • Just like a real circus act, Cabaji makes the wheel Zoro is attached to spin while throwing knives at him. Zoro remains completely unfazed, prompting Cabaji to ask if he really doesn't fear death. Zoro replies that he just doesn't fear him.
  • Buggy tries to persuade Luffy to join his crew with dramatic music swelling up. When Luffy refuses, Buggy yells at him and hits the glass tank. Buggy then recoils in pain as he nurses his hand and the music goes dead silent.
  • As evidenced by the page image above, mini-Buggy is just as ridiculous and hilarious as, if not more than, he is in the manga and anime.
Buggy: The One Piece will never be yours! You're just a sad, lonely little boy wearing another man's hat!
  • Shanks thanks the town for the food, and promises that they're going to be sure it's going to last... just to declare that, with Lucky Roux, it will be three hours at best. Lucky Roux then snarks they're going to be lucky if the food lasts that long.
  • Luffy turns down the townspeople's food as he claims they need it more than him. But of course, just as he tries to walk away, Luffy runs back for "just a snack".
  • As if nodding to Technology Marches On, Nami has a Denden Mushi bluetooth earpiece.

     Episode 3: Tell No Tales
  • Zoro walks out to report to Nami that their toilet was busted.
Nami: We don't have a toilet.
Zoro: Oh. Well then, something back there is leaking.
    • The little Denden Mushi Nami had in the previous episode quietly coughs up sea water as she fishes it out.
  • Luffy asks Zoro what he thinks of his Jolly Roger. Zoro looks at it stoically, then comments "That's unique", but it's difficult to tell if he's being sarcastic, is just rolling with this latest antic, or even both.
  • When Luffy asks "Who says pirates have to be scary?", Nami and Zoro are silent over the sheer absurdity of the question.
  • This exchange between Zoro and Luffy when he finds a wanted poster of Buggy with a hefty bounty:
Zoro: You got to be kidding me. That clown was worth 15 million Berry. We should've stuffed his head in a bag and brought it with us.
Luffy: What Marine would pay you that bounty anyways? You're kind of a wanted man yourself now.
Zoro: Hmm. [Beat] Didn't think of that.
    • Zoro's comment becomes Hilarious in Hindsight because that's exactly what happens to Buggy for the last half of the season.
    • Later, Zoro tears down and crumples up the aforementioned poster:
      Zoro: Stupid clown.
  • When they meet Usopp at the Shipyard, he explains he has a rather important role with the ships... which Zoro sees through as him saying he's the guy who cleans the ship from barnacles and bird crap, just with longer words.
Usopp: I'm Chief Technician in charge of encrustation removal and aviary waste eradication.
    Luffy: (confused) Encro what?
Zoro: He scrubs barnacles and cleans bird shit.
  • Luffy asks why they were going in a different entrance, with Usopp claiming it was a VIP entrance.
Zoro: (under his breath) He's full of shit.
Nami: Of course. But if it actually gets us inside, who cares?
  • As Nami tries on some outfits, she asks for Luffy's opinion. He unhelpfully tells her she "looks like Nami". When she tries another outfit, Luffy says "Still Nami" while Zoro tells her he wanted to be the one wearing black.
    Nami: I hate you guys.
    • Luffy ends up just grabbing a black vest for his outfit.
  • Zoro asks his crew if they may have seen Klahadore from somewhere. Nami replies she may have seen him at the last dinner party she attended.
  • Zoro, trying to figure out where he's seen Klahadore before, asks him if he was at a place called "Funky Bar." Klahadore reacts with embarrassment at the very idea of him patronizing such a low-class establishment.
  • During the dinner, Luffy proudly announces that they are actually pirates. Usopp does a Spit Take into his drink while Nami and Zoro avoid all eye contact and slink into their seats.
Zoro: (into his cup) This outta be good.
  • The face of regret and annoyance on Klahadore's face as he reluctantly takes the glass that Luffy hands over for him to hold. Later on, Usopp admits he secretly got a kick out of that, as it "looked like [Kuro's] head was gonna explode".
  • Zoro, looking for something to drink at Kaya's house, says the place is like a maze. While standing in a very straight, easily-navigable hallway.
  • Usopp asks the two guys if Kaya like likes him. Zoro says he's the wrong guy to ask while Luffy cheerfully tells Usopp he already likes him.
Usopp: (beat) Okay, but that's not what I... never mind.
    • After Usopp brings up Yasopp and Luffy tells him he knew his father, Zoro declares that if they were really gonna talk about feelings he needed that drink. Usopp finally informs Zoro that there was actually a wine cellar in the basement. There's a beat as Zoro stares at Usopp for a second before asking, "Why didn't you tell me sooner?"
  • Zoro asks Luffy if he was coming along for the drinks and Luffy declines, happily going over to the pot of Kaya's poisoned soup. He lifts it up and downs the whole thing.
    • As Luffy goes around the kitchen, you can see him stuffing various foods into his pockets. Likely saving up for a snack after his midnight snack.
  • Buchi and Sham argue and act more like regular siblings than fearsome pirates throughout most of the episode.
    • When preparing the poisoned soup for Kaya, Buchi goes for a taste test, earning him a smack and a scolding from Sham. He excuses it as being "a chef's reflex".
    • During dinner, Buchi carefully rearranges the appetizers on Sham's plate like an actual chef would. The look she gives him is both confused and repulsed.
    • After the face-off in the cellar, Sham pettily asks Kuro what they should do about Usopp, as he got away — with a pointed look towards Buchi, who was the one to let him escape. The moment the two of them are alone, he mockingly imitates her.
Buchi: (high-pitched voice) "Ooh, Usopp got away. Ooooh."
    • As they carry Merry and Zoro's bodies to the well, Buchi asks why he has to be the one to push the cart. Sham replies that it's because he's twice as big as her and half as smart. Then she hops into the cart once they're done, hitching a free ride back to the mansion, much to Buchi's annoyance.

Episode 4: The Pirates Are Coming
  • Buchi, Sham and Kuro come upon Luffy passed out onto the table. Buchi sadly complains that he didn't get to hear Luffy compliment his food and how it tasted. Sham replies that it obviously just tasted like poison. Buchi says, "Not with my cooking."
  • Earlier, Sham harps on Buchi taking his role as the head chef too seriously. But as they attempt to get rid of Luffy's body, she warns Buchi against tracking mud all over her floors again. Buchi makes a quip remark, "says the maid" which Sham replies to with an insulted gasp of shock.
  • As Helmeppo taunts Luffy while he's still intoxicated, Luffy barfs blue gunge all over him.
  • After getting out of the well, Zoro saves Luffy from being arrested by the Marines, casually knocking out Helmeppo with a single punch (after calling him "haircut") in the process.
Luffy: How did you know where to find me?
    • This is a fairly low-key indication of his bad sense of direction, because if a viewer was paying attention in a earlier scene, they'll see that the mansion is visible from the well.
    • The moment Helmeppo turns around and sees Zoro, his whole demeanor deflates. He's still holding his gun, and Zoro is initially a good five feet away, yet Helmeppo doesn't even try anything; without a word, he simply resigns himself to the fact that what happens next (getting his ass kicked, again) is inevitable, one way or the other. It takes one punch from Zoro to knock Helmeppo out.
      Zoro: Hey, haircut.
  • In the previous episode, Luffy makes a bet with Nami that he'll be able to talk to Kaya into giving them the Going Merry for free. After the fight with Kuro, Luffy says that they don't have a ship to make their escape in, until Kaya says "...Yes, you do", implicitly as thanks for saving her life. After this, Luffy wordlessly remembers their bet and proceeds to saddle up to Nami with the biggest shit-eating grin imaginable, while Nami looks more upset that anyone getting a free ship should be.
  • As Kaya and Usopp kiss, Luffy looks back to the others to ask, "They do know I'm the captain, right?" Nami gently puts a hand on his shoulder and tells him to let the two lovebirds have this moment.
  • Usopp and Luffy fighting over who is the captain, which eventually makes everyone crack up at the sheer ridiculousness. Also, while they're arguing, you can hear Luffy call himself Captain Usopp before realizing what he said and then calling himself "Captain Me".
  • The rest of the Straw Hats' reaction to Luffy identifying Garp as Grandpa.
    • Luffy's own reaction to Garp appearing isn't fear or anger, but genuine confusion.

     Episode 5: Eat at Baratie!
  • In the flashback to Luffy's childhood, Garp is wearing a Hawaiian shirt while he's off-duty. It's a jarring sight, to say the least.
  • Just before he declares Luffy would start his Marine training that day, Garp says the thing they should attend to before that? Lunch. Like grandfather, like grandson.
  • When the Going Merry comes under attack, it becomes apparent that neither Luffy nor Usopp knows anything about naval warfare. Including how to load a cannon. Zoro meanwhile doesn't understand naval terminology like 'port'. Nami has to explain it all to them...and then Usopp knocks the cannonballs down a flight of stairs. Nami and Zoro's faces are priceless.
  • Garp, in a tone fitting for a Vice-Admiral, invokes his authority as a marine to demand that the Straw Hats cease their escape and accept arrest. Luffy, less like a pirate and more like a child being told to go to bed, screams "NEVER!" Garp calls Luffy a brat under his breath for the response.
  • Garp decides enough is enough, takes a cannonball in his hand and chucks it straight at the ship. Luffy in return bounces it back by inflating his body like a balloon and damages their ship. Garp's reaction is first immediate shock, then frustration that slowly turns into a hearty, maniacal laugh as he remarks, "Not bad, boy!".
  • After the Straw Hats have escaped, Nami presses Zoro to go talk to Luffy about Garp being his grandfather. Yet as someone who previously stated "I don't talk. I hit things", Zoro can't be bothered to put in more than the bare minimum:
Zoro: About the battle, you wanna talk about it?
    Luffy: Nope.
Zoro: (beat; walks away) Okay, good talk. (to Nami) Seems fine to me.
Nami: Did you even ask him?
    • Usopp does a sort of half-hearted no to doing the talk himself, as he "barely knows the guy" (when just the last episode he called Luffy his "best friend"). Nami just gives a flat glare at the lame excuse, but then goes to Zoro with the fact that he's "The first mate." Zoro just sighs audibly at having to do this.
  • Luffy suddenly catches the smell of food, and even describes what the food is. The others are...less than convinced.
Zoro: You think he has brain damage?
    Nami: I think that everyday.
  • Luffy however, insists he smells food and then accurately navigates the crew through the fog on the smell alone. He even gives Nami specific coordinates.
Nami: (slightly impressed) Add food to the equation and suddenly he knows how to navigate.
  • The fishman waiter tells the Strawhats that they would have to reserve and wait for an open spot in three weeks. Usopp tells the waiter that Luffy - the man he is speaking to - would be the future King of the Pirates, so they should get a table.
Waiter: Well, in that case, we'll find a table.
    Usopp: Yes!
Waiter: (under his breath) In three weeks.
    • Nami ends up bribing the man behind Luffy and Usopp's back, leading the two to believe that their ploy actually worked.
Nami: You'll have to excuse them. They're idiots.
  • Patty and Sanji have some back and forth when Patty catches Sanji making something off menu.
Patty: I don't see this anywhere on the menu.
Sanji: It's called "imagination", Patty. I wouldn't expect you to understand.
Patty: You wanna take this outside?
Sanji: Are you asking me to dance? 'Cause I kinda got my eye on that blonde at table eight.
  • Sanji is introduced to the Straw Hats blatantly insulting the restaurant he works at, with Nami giving a very sarcastic response. This leads to him very obviously flirting with her... much to her confusion at his insistent winking.
Nami: Is there something wrong with your eye?
Sanji: Just blinded by your beauty.
    • Then Zoro starts to troll Nami by repeating Sanji's use of the word, "Madam," to Usopp and Luffy's amusement.
      Nami: What?
Zoro: Nothing... Madam. (Nami groans) Forgive my rude behavior, Madam. Would Madam prefer her water in a crystal glass, or would a golden bowl be more Madam's style?
Usopp: (playfully) Nami's got a boyfriend!
      (the crew chuckles amongst themselves)
Nami: (rolling her eyes, yet with a small smile) You guys are the worst.
  • When Garp is calling Mihawk, it is a very tense scene in the Marine ship. But with Mihawk? He says he's "just killing some time", while he is decimating everyone in the Krieg Pirate Fleet. For added Black Comedy, Garp is visibly cringing at the sound of Krieg bloodily dying before Mihawk casually asks what he wants.
  • Luffy asks the crew if they should order desserts, with Zoro holding up his wine bottle and saying he has his dessert right here.
  • Luffy basically attempting to pay off their tab with an IOU note. You can see the absolute glee on Sanji's face as he goes to hand off the receipt to Zeff and watch the shitshow begin. Zeff then stomps out of the kitchen and demands to know who the hell Monkey D. Luffy is. Luffy is legitimately surprised that the IOU doesn't work.
    • After Luffy gets dragged off, Nami mutters that she needs a drink. Zoro gleams excitedly and says, "Now we're talking."
  • The rest of the Straw Hats are at a bar drinking with Usopp holding an enormous colorful drink to himself, drinking it with four straws. Zoro advises Usopp to pace himself, but Usopp says that there likely wasn't any alcohol in the drink since it tastes like candy. Zoro remarks the last time he said that, he woke up face down underneath a table. Sure enough, the next time we see Usopp, he's drunkenly dancing in the bar area with spectators, who seem to be thoroughly enjoying watching Usopp bust his moves.
    • As Usopp drunkenly rambles to a guest nearby, the camera slowly pans to reveal Mihawk quietly listening to Usopp. Not realizing he's talking to one of the Warlords of the Sea, Usopp goes to introduce Mihawk to the crew as his "new best friend".
  • The way Mihawk's eyes practically roll when Zoro comments on being a fan and has followed Mihawk's story. You can hear the tone in his voice when he says "thank you" clearly thinking, "Great, another fanboy".
  • When Nami is trying to talk Zoro out of his duel with Mihawk, Zoro asks Luffy if he remembers what he told him when they met:
Luffy: "What makes you think I want to play pirates with you?"
    Zoro: No, the other thing.
Luffy:... "I kill your kind for a living"?
Zoro: No, come- *groans*... the other other thing!
  • As Nami yells at Luffy to tell Zoro to call off the duel, Usopp quietly suggests they maybe try drinking some more. One glare has him immediately shutting up.
  • After their argument over Zoro's challenge to Mihawk, there are several scenes of the Straw Hats prepping for the coming duel... interrupted by Usopp barfing up all the alcohol he drank.

Episode 6: The Chef and the Chore Boy
  • As the group carry Zoro into the Going Merry, Usopp complains about Zoro's head being "freakishly big".
  • Zeff comes in to help Zoro and pulls out the bottle of whiskey. Usopp asks if that was to help clean Zoro's wounds. Zeff tells him no, "that would be a waste of really good liquor".
  • A little exchange with Koby and Garp about Luffy's character. Koby mentions that Luffy thinks highly of his individualism. Garp replies, "That's my fault. I was too easy on him." Anyone who read the manga would know how terrifying that sentence is.
  • While waiting for Zoro to recover from his injuries, Luffy insists on taking care of his Wado Ichimonji blade, though he thinks it's named the "Waddy Itchy Monkey".
  • In the flashback to Sanji and Zeff's first meeting, a young Sanji is hiding as Zeff boards his ship, and Zeff comes across the sauce Sanji's making, and attempts to season it with oregano. Cue Sanji trying to charge Zeff with a knife.
    Sanji: OREGANO'S FOR SAVAGES!
    • Soon after, kid Sanji declares that he'd rather die than let Zeff season his food.
    • In present day, when Zeff tells Sanji one of his dishes needs more oregano, Sanji can be seen mouthing Zeff's words - likely having heard this order before. He eventually looks up to Zeff and deadpans, "oregano is for savages".
    • The very fact that the flashback Zeff carried several herbs and seasonings on his person as he raided ships is quite hilarious.
  • Sanji gets sent flying by Kuroobi, falling over a table and revealing Usopp cowering underneath. Seeing that he's lost his cover, Usopp quickly crawls away.
  • After Zoro finally wakes up, Luffy excitedly jumps on top of him and loudly screams his name. You can see Zoro flinching in pain from Luffy's voice and clearly regretting finally waking up.
    • Luffy even raises up Zoro's left arm in celebration at his recovery, forgetting that's around where he was slashed. Luffy quickly puts Zoro's arm back down after hearing his first mate groan in pain.
    • Some fans have noted this is exactly how interactions between these actors in real life tend to turn out: Iñaki's very enthusiastic personality and yelling catches Mackenyu by surprise, especially since they tend to be positioned right next to each other.
  • During the confrontation with Arlong in the restaurant, Arlong reveals that he's had Buggy's head in a bag with him the whole time, leading to the ultimate payoff of the Running Gag of Luffy not being able to remember the clown's name:
    Luffy: Burpy?!
  • It gets even funnier when you realize that Arlong and his crewmates swam to the Baratie meaning that they dragged Buggys head while underwater. One can only imagine that the experience wasn’t very pleasant for the clown head.
  • When Sanji comes aboard the ship to join the crew, Zoro (who was unconscious through most of the episode) asks:
Zoro: Why are we bringing the waiter?
Usopp: 'Cause we can't boil water.
    • Usopp asks Zoro if they were packing a bit too much food on board. Zoro motions towards Luffy as he responds, "Do you know who you're sailing with?" Usopp is quiet for a Beat before nodding his head as if saying, "Yeah, stupid question."
  • The ending, where Luffy reveals they now have Buggy's head as someone to interrogate for information on where to go next. Buggy initially greets the crew with "Hello, boys!" and some clearly nervous laughter before his face contorts into a grimace.

Episode 7: The Girl with the Sawfish Tattoo
  • Buggy's sea shanty near the start of the episode. Zoro and Usopp get sick of it very quickly.
Buggy: Oh, there once was a girl with tangerine hair
Stole my map and left me stranded somewhere
Truly a crafty and crooked young lass
But you can't deny she had a spectacular -
(Zoro drops his head in a barrel)
Buggy: — OW! God, right on my nose!
    • What adds to this is that Usopp hears Zoro coming with the head, and without saying a word, he just casually walks over and opens the barrel for Zoro without needing to be asked.
  • Nojiko holds a rifle up to the Straw Hats and tells them to get the hell off her property. Of course, Sanji is immediately enamoured and it makes sense Nojiko is Nami's sister since they're "both as beautiful as the next". Zoro visibly eyerolls and tells him to give it a rest.
    • When Nojiko accepts Sanji's offer for a meal (including desserts) Sanji happily winks over to Zoro. If only his eyes could roll further back into his skull.
  • Garp arrives at the Baratie with Zeff attempting to placate the Vice Admiral by noting he had a broken fridge full of steaks he would hate to see go to waste. While his assistant tries to call off the bribe, Garp immediately asks what kind of steaks and how he would like it done. The next time we see Garp he's happily chowing down through all seven steaks with Helmeppo and Koby staring on in awe and shock.
Bogard: This is nothing, you should see him at a curry house.
  • When Helmeppo gently nudges Koby to spill his secrets and the other finally does, he pauses for a moment to let that information sink in.
Koby: (really quickly) Garp is Luffy's grandfather!
Helmeppo: ...Of all the things I thought you were going to say, that wasn't even on the list.
Koby: I should've known by the way they both love meat.
(Helmeppo pauses, gaining a "...That actually makes a surprising amount of sense" look)
  • Sanji is stuck with babysitting Buggy's head. The reason? "New Guy carries the clown head."
  • Much later, when Buggy is pestering Usopp while the latter is preparing exploding shots for his slingshot and telling the Straw Hats they have no chance against Arlong, Sanji takes a tangerine and shoves it in Buggy's mouth, cheekily telling Usopp that "New guy shuts up the clown head" while Buggy growls in impotent rage.

Episode 8: Worst in the East
  • Zoro and Sanji start to nag each other during combat, arguing (amongst other things) about what Luffy needs from them.
Sanji: I do know he needs my cooking!
Zoro: "Cooking"?! You mean putting two slices of bread together?!
    Buggy: Oooh, someone's feeling threatened!
Zoro and Sanji: [simultaneously] Shut up!
  • Usopp successfully defeats Chu after blowing him and his booze up with an Exploding Star, and his joy at winning starts deflating when he realizes nobody was around to see it.
  • When Kuroobi shows up to deal with Zoro and Sanji, he starts making them work for it - and both Straw Hats still don't stop squabbling.
Kuroobi: [After knocking them down] You're no match for me. My kicks can break a ship's keel.
Sanji: That's nothing. You should have seen Zeff's kicks when he found an egg shell in the crème brûlée...
Zoro: I get it, Zeff was mean to you. Boo-hoo.
  • In a Brick Joke to the first episode, Sanji starts calling his attacks while fighting Kuroobi, and uses the same justification for it that Luffy did.
  • After Buggy expectedly reneges on his deal with the Straw Hats after finally getting his body back (and flipping Zoro and Sanji off before he bolts), Zoro has this to say.
  • When Sanji sees Nami running out of Arlong's citadel, he opens his arms wide expecting a hug, only to be ignored as Nami runs right past him into Usopp and Zoro who she hugs enthusiastically. Sanji quietly and dejectedly drops his arms.
  • After the Straw Hats save the village, Nojiko asks Sanji to give them his recipes or make a cookbook. Sanji turns her down, but offers her some "private lessons", which works as well as you'd think.
    Nojiko: (Unimpressed) Nice try.
    • Zoro apparently arrives for seconds. Which he denies, by saying Sanji should be grateful for him saving his ass from the fishmen.
  • What does Zeff do with Luffy's wanted poster? Puts it up under the Employee of the Month plaque in his kitchen, with his IOU beneath it.
  • Nezumi's implied Humiliation Conga in this episode. First, Garp - who clearly hasn't respected him for a second - orders his men to leave. Then he gets cold-cocked by Nami in front of Garp, who conspicuously doesn't do anything, and then walks away with a fond farewell to his grandson... while not making any effort whatsoever to take Nezumi back. So he's just left there, unconscious, in a village full of people that have every reason to hate him.
  • Shanks, who's an Emperor, sarcastically telling his men to show some respect to Mihawk because he's "a mighty Warlord of the sea".
  • Mihawk dismisses the idea of fighting Shanks as he's "half the man he used to be." Shanks begins snarking back, only to crack up at his own joke partway through along with the rest of his crew.
Shanks: I could still take you. And with one arm tied behind my ba- (bursts into laughter)
  • After hearing that Luffy finally became a pirate, Shanks insists they start drinking, ignoring the fact that he's still hungover from the previous night's drinking and is inviting a notorious pirate hunter to join them. And Mihawk, for his part, ends up agreeing with only token resistance.
