Temple of Light

The main religion of Aslan. The Temple of Light worships The Goddess of Light Aria. However, despite that, the Temple of Light is not as altruistic as it first appears.

Beware of unmarked spoilers!

General

  • Corrupt Church: The Temple of Light runs on slaves made up of people who lost their homes to monsters and adventurers who have to pay back their vast medical debts. It was also behind the Dungeon Bubble Break and ruined countless lives.
  • Does This Remind You of Anything?: A trusted organization that sold worthless financial products at massively inflated prices, kept on raising said prices, cheated countless people, caused a massive economic breakdown, and remained largely unscathed while countless lives were ruined...
  • Greed: What motivated the Temple of Light to cause the Dungeon Bubble Break.
  • The Hedonist: Many priests in the Temple of Light are this, wanting to fill their pockets even as the world was coming to an end in the previous timeline. They went so far as to conspire with the Tartarus Worshippers, who are supposed to be their mortal enemies, just so they can live comfortably.
  • Lie Detector: The Heroic-Grade holy relic <Themis's Judgement> works by firing arrows at those who tell lies. However, since it relies on sounds and vibrations, anyone who can perfectly control their muscles and perfectly act out their emotions can fool <Themis's Judgement>...like Leah Testarossa had.
  • Light Is Not Good: Despite being the Temple of Light, it has slaves and is in cahoots with the Tartarus Worshippers with some of the highest-ranking priests also being Tartarus Worshippers.
  • Obstructive Bureaucrat: The Temple of Light, large guilds, and nobles use bureaucratic red tape to bring down smaller-scale guilds or individuals. They make all kinds of excuses to cut the targets off from other sources of funding to make the targets dependent on just them, only to only keep their end of the bargain the first couple of times. After that, they send their targets on a wild goose chase between departments and constantly delay support to their targets for months on end. This causes their targets to fall into horrible conditions as they cannot afford weapons and supplies in addition to countless other expenses while having to pay immense sums of gold to keep the best talent. This usually spells a death sentence for their targets' parties.
  • People Puppets: Priests of Light can control the movements of anyone branded with a Slave Mark. However, other Priests of Light cannot overwrite Lucius's forced commands due to his status as a Holy One with only the Pope being able to match Lucius's capabilities.
  • Vow of Celibacy: Technically, Priests of Light are supposed to never marry and must remain celibate. Except they don't really follow that doctrine.

Third Parish of the Temple of Light

The partition of the Temple of Light led by Lucius Giornetti the Holy One. It was built as a base of operations for Lucius to raid the Tomb of the Fallen Princess. The first part of the story takes place at this location.

    Anna Primrose

Anna Primrose

Click here to see her as White Rose

A nun and priest in the Temple of Light. Anna Primrose is also known as White Rose and works as a broker who deals in monster corpses, gear, and stolen goods with connections in the criminal underworld.

Tropes:

  • Anger Born of Worry: The reason why Anna slapped Zephyr.
  • Arms Dealer: As White Rose, Anna deals in weapons in addition to numerous other goods (which may or may not have been stolen).
  • Berserk Button: DO NOT even think about defaulting on your debts.
  • Crush Blush: After starting to develop feelings for Zephyr, Anna sometimes gets these around him.
  • Friend in the Black Market: Becomes this to Zephyr. She provided him with various items in exchange for monster corpses and poisons.
  • Human Resources: Was about to have Zephyr's organs harvested for him not paying back his debt. Thank goodness he had that Predator corpse on him.
  • Mistaken for Romance: Gote, Dale, and Marco thought Zephyr managed to win Anna over after they saw her leave their room and saw the Ring of Purification on Zephyr's finger. He had no idea what they were talking about.
  • Nun Too Holy: Despite being a nun in the Temple of Light, Anna is also involved in the black market and has a nose for money.
  • Right Under Their Noses: White Rose conducts business in the Temple of Light, despite her dealing in illegal items. However, due to being a priest in the Temple of Light and the Temple of Light's own corruption, she gets away with it most of the time.
  • Tsundere: Anna slapped Zephyr after forcing both him and Ned onto their knees as they were about to fight and threatened to kill him if he caused more trouble and didn't pay back his debt. Anna also gently touched the slap mark and told Zephyr to be more careful since she can't protect him outside of the temple.
  • Wrong Assumption: After seeing Zephyr's fighting prowess and seeing him power himself up with Zagan and Belial, Anna assumed that he was a former member of Persephone. Anna was wrong, but Zephyr let her believe that so that she could spread rumors on the black market and have Fade, the King of Poisons look for him.

    Mathias Grimmer

    Lucius Giornetti

    Bishop Alfonso Giornetti

Bishop Alfonso Giornetti

https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/alfonso.PNG

The bishop of the Third Parish of the Temple of Light and Lucius's uncle in addition to being the brother of Duke Cesare Giornetti and Queen Lucretia.

Tropes:

  • Blatant Lies: Bishop Alfonso claimed to be feeling great and excellent after being brainwashed by Oldin, despite his expression saying otherwise.
  • Brainwashed and Crazy: After being forced to ingest one of Oldin's Marked Bugs, Bishop Alfonso was forced to do his bidding. Thankfully, he got better after Zephyr and/or Ned killed the Queen Bug.
  • Et Tu, Brute?: The Giornetti family had been quite close to Cardinal Oldin Lasker. Cardinal Oldin Lasker repaid said closeness by forcing Bishop Alfonso to ingest a Marked Bug and taking control of him.
  • Proof Dare: After being brainwashed, Bishop Alfonso confronted Lucius as he was accusing Cardinal Oldin Lasker of heresy, admonishing him and demanding proof. Luckily, Lucius had said proof in the form of the letters Zephyr found and gave him as they were exploring the abandoned mansion the Tartarus Worshippers held their meetings in.
  • Reasonable Authority Figure: Bishop Alfonso geniunely thanked Zephyr and Ned for defending the Third Parish and removing the brainwashing done to him and the others who were also forced to ingest one of Oldin's Marked Bugs. In addition, Bishop Alfonso also showed concern after Zephyr announced that he and Ned would hunt Blue Dragon Artalis and Ice Dragon Merenia, two of the eight most difficult challenges in the world alongside the Tomb of the Fallen Princess and the Canyon of Oblivion.

    Claudia Giornetti

Claudia Giornetti

https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/claudia_8.PNG

A nun and priest in the Temple of Light. Claudia is Lucius's wife and the mother of their son, Marius in addition to two older children.

Tropes:

  • The Ageless: Claudia is revealed to be over 100 years old and was described as "a being who doesn't age and possesses bizarre powers". Because of this and only because of this, Claudia had been imprisoned in the Twilight Mansion of Designated Isolation for 100 years and would have remained there for all of eternity had Lucius not found and freed her.
  • Ambiguously Human: The Pope and other higher-ups within the Temple of Light seem to think so. That was why they locked her up in the Twilight Mansion of Designated Isolation and then would have forced her to spend the rest of her life in the temple's underground prison had Lucius not intervened.
  • Bait-and-Switch: During the self-imposed isolation Lucius put the Third Parish of the Temple of Light under, it would seem like someone had broken in and held a knife to Lucius's back to threaten him...only for it to be revealed to be Claudia, and she was only playing with Lucius with both having a good time. However, later on, it was revealed that someone had, in fact, broken in...Fade.
  • Beauty Equals Goodness: Is very beautiful, and is shown to be a very good wife, mother, and person in general.
  • Big "NO!": Gave one after witnessing Oldin about to feed her son a Marked Bug.
  • Damsel in Distress: Claudia and Marius were held hostage by Cardinal Oldin Lasker and the Twin Knights so he could convince Lucius to become his puppet. Thank goodness Ned saved them both.
  • Despair Event Horizon: In the previous timeline, Claudia begged Zephyr to kill her after her children and her husband were killed, as she no longer had a reason to live.
  • Good Parents: Is a very good mother to her son, Marius. When Oldin tried to feed Marius a Marked Bug, Claudia immediately snatched his hand away, forcing him to drop the Marked Bug. She is also a very good mother to her two older children, who currently reside in the capital.
  • Happily Married: Is happily married to her husband Lucius. Although they cannot be officially married due to being Priests of Light, they still act like a married couple and even have three children together.
  • Hyperactive Metabolism: Claudia's handmade food invokes this on whoever eats said food like when Ned ate some after being impaled by the Golden Knight, completely healing him and restoring his mana.
  • Immortality Begins at Twenty: Claudia is over 100 years old, yet seemed to have stopped aging in her 20s or 30s.
  • Kindhearted Cat Lover: Was shown to own a white cat, and is quite the kind person.
  • Rescue Romance: Claudia had been rescued by Lucius from the Twilight Mansion of Designated Isolation. Even after the Pope then forced Claudia to be locked up in the Third Parish of the Temple of Light and made Lucius her supervisor, Lucius treated her like a human being and gave her as much freedom as he possibly could, allowing her to go where she pleases within the temple. In fact, one of the main reasons Lucius was so desperate to clear the Tomb of the Fallen Princess is that the Pope promised to free her if he presented the cleared dungeon to the Temple of Light. Lucius treated Claudia with the kindness and respect she never received before yet definitely deserved, and continues to do so. Is it any wonder why she fell in love with Lucius and married him?

    Leona

    Arno

    Angelia

Angelia

https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/angelia_8.PNG

A nun and priest in the Temple of Light. She works as an enchanter for the lab.

Tropes:

  • Curtains Match the Window: Has purple hair and purple eyes.
  • Magic Enhancement: Angelia is one of the best enchanters in the Temple of Light and agreed to enchant five items for Zephyr for only 3000 gold, which was considered to be quite cheap.
  • White Magic: Said magic that Angelia enchants items with is divine/light magic.

Fourth Parish of the Temple of Light

The partition of the Temple of Light led by Cardinal Oldin Lasker. Cardinal Oldin Lasker took over the position of priest from his father in addition to having several responsibilities in the Central Parish as well. However, not is all as it seems...

    Iron Maiden Gertrude

Iron Maiden Gertrude

https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/gertrude.PNG

The Fourth Parish of the Temple of Light Knight Order Captain. Upon learning of Oldin's death, she stormed off to the Third Parish of the Temple of Light to check on Oldin and avenge him if needed.

Tropes:

  • Devoted to You: Not necessarily a romantic one, but Iron Maiden Gertrude is so devoted to Oldin, it crosses into obsession. Iron Maiden Gertrude only went to the Third Parish of the Temple of Light to check on Oldin and avenge him if needed, and did not care one bit about the Basilico that was threatening to kill her and everyone around her.
  • Epic Flail: Seems to be her weapon of choice.
  • Lady of War: Well, she is the Fourth Parish of the Temple of Light Knight Order Captain for a reason.
  • Leeroy Jenkins: Iron Maiden Gertrude's obsession with Oldin blinded her to the very real risk of dying at the hands of the Basilico. Instead of working with Priest Cornwall and Priest Benjamin to fight off the Basilico, she instead diverted Priest Benjamin's attack toward the Third Parish of the Temple of Light, putting her and everyone else present in mortal danger.
  • Meaningful Name: "Iron Maiden", for how tough and strong she is.
  • Pet the Dog: For how tough she is, she is genuinely concerned for Oldin. Out of the three high-ranked priests that were to judge "Mathias's" accusation—Finance Council of the Temple of Light First-Grade Investigator Cornwall, Vatican Relic Management Squad First-Grade Member Benjamin, Fourth Parish of the Temple of Light Knight Order Captain and Interim Bishop Gertrude—and give "Mathias" the authority to arrest Lucius for blasphemy, Gertrude was the only one who didn't care if the Holy One was guilty or not and who would be affected by that judgement; all she wanted was to see if Oldin was safe.
  • Revenge Before Reason: Despite facing the very real risk of being murdered by the Basilico, Iron Maiden Gertrude forced Priest Benjamin to blast the <Golden Mirror of the Holy Sanctuary> at the Third Parish of the Temple of Light anyways, all for Oldin's sake.
  • Roaring Rampage of Revenge: Wants to kill Lucius to avenge Oldin's death. As Iron Maiden Gertrude stood before the Third Parish of the Temple of Light, she shook with rage as she cursed at Lucius.
  • Supernormal Bindings: Subjected to these after springing a trap in a hallway of the Third Parish of the Temple of Light, after which she was later found and then arrested.

Finance Council of the Temple of Light

The branch of the Temple of Light specializing in investments and other financial matters. After Lucius sealed the Third Parish of the Temple of Light off, the Finance Council of the Temple of Light sent Priest Cornwall to investigate the situation.

    Priest Cornwall

Priest Cornwall

https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/priest_cornwall_3.PNG

A Finance Council of the Temple of Light First-Grade Investigator. After Lucius sealed the Third Parish of the Temple of Light off, the Finance Council of the Temple of Light sent Priest Cornwall to investigate the situation.

Tropes:

  • Golem: The <Spear Servant of the Goddess> is a stone statue of a templar that is worshipped by others and will attack one's enemies if divine power is infused into it. He used it to fight the Basilico and buy time for Priest Benjamin to prepare the <Golden Mirror of the Holy Sanctuary>...only for Iron Maiden Gertrude to barge in and force Priest Benjamin to direct the blasts at the Third Parish of the Temple of Light instead of the Basilico.
  • Reasonable Authority Figure: Despite itching for any excuse to barge into the Third Parish of the Temple of Light, Priest Cornwall did not immediately believe "Mathias's" accusation, waiting for "him" to testify before <Themis's Judgement> before passing his own judgement.
  • Tears of Awe: After Zephyr had returned to the Third Parish of the Temple of Light, he did thing after thing that left Priest Cornwall in awe: one-shotting the Basilico with the Stake of Faith and the Sword of Light; possessing the features of a dragon; emitting an intense pressure that reminded him of the Cayenne Kingdom's Guardian Dragon, Golden Dragon Archduke Magnus Fraiser; obliterating countless monsters with a single swing of the Sword of Light. Was it any wonder Priest Cornwall cried tears of awe after Zephyr presented Blue Dragon Artalis's head to everyone?
  • White Magic: Despite being part of the Finance Council of the Temple of Light, Priest Cornwall is also capable of using divine power, as seen when he used some to power the <Spear Servant of the Goddess>.

Vatican Relic Management Squad

The branch of the Temple of Light specializing in the management of holy relics. After Lucius failed to return the Stake of Faith for over a month, the Vatican Relic Management Squad sent Priest Benjamin to investigate the situation.

    Priest Benjamin

Priest Benjamin

https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/priest_benjamin.PNG

A Vatican Relic Management Squad First-Grade Member. After Lucius failed to return the Stake of Faith for over a month, the Vatican Relic Management Squad sent Priest Benjamin to investigate the situation.

Tropes:

  • Ancient Artifact: Manages the holy relics of the Vatican, and can use authorized artifacts freely when carrying out a mission given out by the Temple of Light. Due to this, Priest Benjamin knew that Zephyr was wielding the Sword of Light, a Legendary-Grade divine item that can use <Dispel> of the highest rank with its wielder only appearing once every few hundred years as a special priest chosen by The Goddess of Light Aria.
Priest Benjamin completely believed its reading and insisted that it is 100% correct...until Ophelia pointed out that <Themis's Judgement> would also judge those under hypnosis to be 100% correct as well.
  • Hammerspace: Stores <Themis's Judgement> and the <Golden Mirror of the Holy Sanctuary> inside of a ring.
  • Magic Mirror: The <Golden Mirror of the Holy Sanctuary> is a Legendary-Grade holy relic that blasts out mana pulled from those holding the Legendary-Grade holy relic <Dagger of the Holy Sanctuary>. It consumes divine power or mana in an instant for firepower and gains tremendous power temporarily. Priest Benjamin was authorized to use it for siege warfare against the Third Parish of the Temple of Light yet was going to use it against authorization—despite facing severe consequences—to fight the Basilico...until Iron Maiden Gerturde forced Priest Benjamin to aim the blasts at the Third Parish of the Temple of Light anyways despite the very real risk of the Basilico killing all of them, including she herself.
  • Reasonable Authority Figure: Despite itching for any excuse to barge into the Third Parish of the Temple of Light, Priest Benjamin did not immediately believe "Mathias's" accusation, forcing "him" to testify before <Themis's Judgement>.
  • Tears of Awe: After Zephyr had returned to the Third Parish of the Temple of Light, he did thing after thing that left Priest Benjamin in awe: one-shotting the Basilico with the Stake of Faith and the Sword of Light; being the first in hundreds of years to wield the Sword of Light; having been chosen by The Goddess of Light Aria; obliterating countless monsters with a single swing of the Sword of Light. Was it any wonder Priest Benjamin cried tears of awe after Zephyr presented Blue Dragon Artalis's head to everyone?
  • White Magic: The Rare-Grade holy relic <Staff of Benevolence> deploys barriers of purification upon being stuck into the ground. Priest Benjamin used it to purify those who had been turned into stone by the Basilico.
