I wish that I could correct the dates that Voldemort attended Hogwarts. It's not "canonically, the 1940s." Tom Marvolo Riddle was born 31 December 1926, and, like Hermione, started attending when he was a year older than everyone else. So he attended from September 1938 to June 1945. Yes, he attended Hogwarts in 1940, 1941, 1942, 1943, 1944 and 1945, but 1938 and 1939 don't qualify as the Forties no matter how you look at it.

Why is "Giftedly Bad" here? I'm against this being a non-YMMV trope at all, but it especially doesn't fit here because Tara doesn't have any other notable works, and if she did, it would be more appropriate for her own page.

Underneath "Author Avatar" there's a bullet that says Tara once described Ebony's hairstyle and then told readers to email her if they wanted to see the picture. If I remember correctly, she was describing one of Amy Lee's hairstyles and probably meant a picture of Amy Lee, not of herself.

Trope: Trolling Author.

Apparently a man named Todd Gilesbie on deviantART claims to be the trolling author. Tara could indeed be a Lemony Snicket. http://todd-gilesbie.deviantart.com/ The Youtube videos are likely unrelated trolls trying to cash in on the joke.

According to Encyclopedia Dramatica, this guy would hardly be the first to claim it, but he's not on Dramatica's My Immortal page section of fakes & imposters, also this guy has been sticking to this claim for over a year.

Outside of whether or not Todd is the real Tara.....

Tara claims to be Dyslexic. Real Dyslexics tend to use the correct letters & scramble them as well as scramble the order the words go in, they also misspell the word the same way every time. This story's text is misspelt intentionally. It seems likely if you look at the spellings & remember how letters are laid out on a standard keyboard, like "how did you mess that up? Those two letters aren't even near eachother."

Tara is also the textbook definition of a "poser" & is clearly mocking everything she claims to be a fan of. Also claims to hate Hillary Duff, yet lets it slip that she watches her movies.

You know, I get that whether or not My Immortal is actually just a prank or not is a Riddle for the Ages, but then you'd have to subscribe to a crap-ton of other crazy theories:
  • The author is apparently at a skill level so poor that she types in a Funetik Aksent.
  • Spelling errors often cum out to form Accidental Innuendo, such as "Cornelio Fuck".
  • Alternatively, certain words are misspelled in such a way that they take on another kind of double meaning...which is straight-up narm. ie: "I screamed passively while Darko had an eructation" (eructation - burping).
All things considered, refer to Occam's Razor - in which case the alternative would be:

Don't believe it. Sorry.

Over the years, My Immortal has had so many people come out and say they created it, and that account itself has been hacked on several occasions.

On top of that, "midnitegoff" isn't even Tara's original account - that's xxxbloodyrists666xxx. Though in fairness, that account was also hacked several times. If this person really wanted to prove they were a troll behind it all, they SHOULD'VE updated bloodytearz666 (Raven's unhacked account)... which they didn't.

So yeah, I'm pretty sure this guy is just trying to ride on the coattails of MI's fame and get his work out there. However, if he has any independent evidence to prove it, the burden of proof is on him. And boy, is it a big one.

Are these things from YMMV true?
  • Does This Remind You of Anything?: Voldemortserum. Note that all the main characters use real life drugs with no negative consequences whatsoever. And Dumbledore condones smoking pot in school at the very least. Then again, they may not be smoking pot at all — just cigarettes that they think are pot.
    • They're also Immune to Drugs, as the story never says anything about anybody actually getting high, or in fact feeling anything at all.
  • I Am Not Shazam: She at one point refers to the band HIM, but in the same sentence then uses it lowercase. She tends to be pretty good on capitalizing band names, so it looks like she meant to refer to the singer Ville Valo.
  • Poe's Law: Ask three people whether this is a parody and you'll get four answers. It doesn't help that, if it is a parody, it's the stealth variety, and as such doubly vulnerable to this.

I was recently reading over this article, and the fanfic itself, and noticed something. What the hell happened to Justin? Many of you might be asking "who's Justin?" which would be understandable since it seems so many people forget about him, but he's there- in the first few sentences, no less! In the first AN, she [Tara] says this: "Justin ur da luv of my deprzzing life u rok 2! MCR ROX!". Considering the fact that Justin *is never mentioned again*, and given the fact that Tara just LOVES telling her readers random things currently happening in her life (which, of all people, you think would involve Justin) I feel like he warrants a major mention under What Happened to the Mouse? or even perhaps, his own entry on the page under Chuck Cunningham Syndrome. I ask this simply because the page is locked (which is VERY frustrating to a My Immortal fanboy such as myself), in hopes somebody will do it for me.

Oh, also, Encylopaedia Dramatica recently noted that a fanfiction.net user posted this "confession" to writing it. It seems hard to believe, especially considering that they deleted that confession soon after, and, as of right now have deleted their account too. Is this notable enough to be mentioned here?

Has anyone tried translating Taraese? I've done the first ten chapters in an attempt to make it legible and get rid of the plotholes. It's not because I hate the lulz, I just want to see what could be going through her mind (passively = passionately, apparently; I have no idea how I figured it out), and find out what the plot is, exactly. So far, the grammar isn't actually that bad; just a LOT of costume porn. I'm afraid of getting to sporking the spiked heroin cabaret, though. That'll be hard.

One commenter on the pottersues sporking shared this little confession:

"Ok... so I guess it's about time I finally set things straight. What a better day to pick then April Fool's, don't you think? I've just managed to pull off the scheme of the year. I tricked most of you (that is to say the idiots) into thinking this story was for REAL! Ha ha, not. I've been dropping ANVIL sized hints throughout the whole story, and to tell you the truth, I thought this fic wouldn't last a week. But you all caught on! Congratulations, you are all officially idiots. But hey, I don't mind, I had a good laugh out of all the reviews, especially the flames, and the ones offering constructive criticism... sorry, but all you people just wasted hours of time, for nothing! Ah, I love being a troll. ...

Sincerely, wishing you a lovely April Fool's Day, Tara"

This post was from back when the fic was still on FFN. Is there any way (geddit, like Gerard) to prove that this note existed? The post doesn't specify whether it was part of a chapter, or on her profile for one day, or what. I'm dying to know for sure whether this was real (although it probably can't be disproven, so here's hoping it did happen and that someone, somewhere, has a screenie).

Pretty much what Blob Pink Dragon said, people want to add tropes to the page, and other people can clean up the so called natter when it appears, but no one can do that until the page is unlocked.

"Beyond The Impossible: How bad can Tara's spelling get? The strongest case one could make for this being a parody is that no one could possibly make that many typos."

My friends, you have not spent nearly enough time reading the new submission listings on fanfiction.net if you believe that. I seen numerous fics with literally a typo every 2-3 words (and left mean reviews). That doesn't count all the punctuation, grammar, and capitalization errors. It's quite clear that literacy is not a requirement for writing fanfic. Hell, just pick a fandom's new submissions list and read the summaries for a few pages!

There are a few suggestions I would live to make for the current lead, mostly because the revisions, while less wordy, took away some useful context. First, for the opening sentence:

Once upon a time, a person known as Tara Gilesbie created a Fan Fiction that re-defined the meaning of 'bad.' My Immortal is that fanfic.

"A person" was just a closing of a long-running joke of insulting Gilesbie with suggestions on her species. May I instead recommend this:

My Immortal, by Tara Gilesbie, is a Harry Potter fanfiction that set the gold standard for all subsequent badfics.

I'm tempted to pipe So Bad, It's Good here, because I can't imagine not finding a single funny thing in this.

As you can see, this might just be the most polarizing fanfiction ever written for Harry Potter, or anything else.

Just scrap this line. It was originally a joke, but the context was lost when the struck out comments of "best" and "worst" were deleted.

Noteworthy on this Wiki for being the source of, Trope Namer and Most Triumphant (or scary) Example for Draco In Leather Pants.

This too. The trope namer was The Draco Trilogy.

For The Legend Of Zelda version, see My Inner Life, and you'll get Gannon Banned if you compare it to The Legend Of Zelda CDI Games.

The last bit of this sentence sounds ridiculous without its original follow-up "Those games are fucking epic." Consider scrapping it.

I may come back with more suggestions for the rest of the article, but really, next time a purge is done, Fast Eddie needs to find someone to double-check the remains.

For that matter,

For the Warrior Cats version, see Starkits Prophecy.

That's a redlink, though I'm not sure whether that's because we decided to get rid of it or because it belongs in the Fanfic/ namespace. Either way, needs fixing.

I'd just like to say that making a Back to the Future cameo during a time travel scene (if done right) has serious Crowning Moment of Awesome potential.

To bad it was done in My Immortal, where the size of the "tim" machine wasn't even correct.

Wait, why is this locked again? Last time I could at least point to a few edits in the history and say "you see that, that thing, stop doing it, grow up etc", but this time, I have no idea what happened.

This is pretty much just for clarification, as I dislike not knowing.

  • So Bad You Keep Reading Because Your Brain Refuses To Accept That Anything This Bad Could Possibly Exist
    • Reading this fanfic is like activating a machine that fires cement blocks at your forehead. Each time you hit the "next chapter" button, the impact nearly knocks you from your seat and threatens to turn your brain into chunky salsa. Yet you keep pushing that button, partly out of the knowledge that (assuming you survive) you can only emerge stronger after this ordeal, partly out of respect for the twisted craftsmanship behind the hideous construct, and partly out of the mistaken belief that the next cement block couldn't possibly hurt as bad as the last one.

      • That, or you keep pushing it due to excessive brain damage.
      • This Troper thinks it's the most awesome thing ever created.
      • This is delicious badfic. OM NOM NOM NOM NOM NOM NOM.
      • *Looks at constant, unending spam above that was the norm for the page, commits suicide.*

This page was a spam target and it was just too much of a pain in the ass to deal with about two dozen /b/tards adding shit per day.

Oh, fine, whatever. I was considering adding an example of How Do I Used Tense?, but I don't want to bait the /b/tards. Oh, and if someone has editing power, this fic was not the source of Draco in Leather Pants.

I think this one really put it over the fence, though. The Draco Trilogy only had Draco in Leather Pants for one scene, if I'm not mistaken.

It was one scene that became something of a meme, and the trend of putting Draco in Leather Pants (literally and metaphorically) was already in full swing when Tara came along.

Additionally, I believe TDT predates MI by about five years. I suppose it could mean that's how TV Tropes found out about it but it seems somewhat unlikely.

PS if you are THE szaleniec1000 please update. I will love you forever.

Snipped this:

  • One of Tara's "Favorite Authors" on FF is none other than XXXmidnitegoffXXX, who is known for making intentional badfics and was the author of the spoof Wake Me Up Inside which many thought was the true sequel. Why would Tara favor someone who mocked her fic and hates "Mary Sues"? Because Tara's obviously a troller.
    • Or because Tara got a few years older and saw how fuckawful her story was.

because Tara's account has been hacked into at least 3 times, possibly more. We have no idea if it was Tara who added that troll to her favorites list.

Hmm, how to split the examples properly between Rouge Angles of Satin and You Keep Using That Word? I'm pretty sure "passively" (meaning "passionately") goes in the latter, and simple spelling errors that inadvertently cause unrelated words go in the former, but those that have likely been shifted by the spell-checker... not sure, especially since someone pointed out that it's unlikely the fic has ever seen the touch of a spell-checker.

Yep. I did with regular Coca-Cola, along with my friend and my brother, who did it with Dr. Pepper and Sprite respectively.

I made it the furthest (chapter 32) before I just couldn't go any further without risking serious Type 1 Diabetes. My friend Ben made it to chapter 24 before his parents came for him. From what I'm told, he went to chapter 29 before giving up when he got home. My brother was determined to beat me, but he passed out at Chapter 28.
