Flash and his Pokémon

    Flash Sentry
The main protagonist of the series. He has set off on his journey to travel the Equestria Region and become the next Equestria League Champion.
  • Absurd Phobia: When Tantabagot turns his dream into a nightmare, it reveals he has a crippling fear of sock puppets, changing several Legendary Pokémon into sock puppet versions of themselves.
  • Attack! Attack! Attack!: Flash's original way of battling mainly consisted of just going full Leeroy Jenkins and firing any attack at the enemy to see what works, without any real plan in mind. After he suffers a Curb-Stomp Battle against Thorax, he finally realizes this way of battling isn't going to work, and starts training and strategizing more.
  • Chick Magnet: He earns the affections of a lot of girls on his journey, but is usually unaware of their feelings for him.
    • He gets the most Ship Tease with Twilight, with the two arguing a lot early on before coming to respect and depend on each other.
    • Sunset Shimmer flirts with him a lot after he helped save her. She even stole his First Kiss from him at the end of Total Eclixie the Heart, to the shock of him and everyone else.
    • Sonata Dusk becomes attracted to him after he helps save her from being kidnapped and helps her through her depression and fear, to the point where he becomes the person she trusts the most. She even falls in love with him and confesses her feelings to him at the end of Voice of the Ocean (not that he heard her), but after realizing how Twilight is better for him than her she chooses to back off, wanting him to be with whoever makes him the happiest even if it isn't her.
    • Following Flash defeating Sombra, he becomes famous and gains a lot of fans, including many fan girls. One of them even latches on to his arm with a hug when asking for a photo.
  • A Father to His Men: Flash acts as this to all of his Pokémon, but it is especially this for Hopper. Flash was there for Hopper since the moment he hatched from his egg and has constantly encouraged him and helped him get stronger. Hopper himself realizes Flash has been more like a father to him than a trainer which leads to him evolving into Skeidran to save Flash from a Champagoon.
  • First Kiss: Sunset Shimmer steals his first kiss at the end of Total Eclixie the Heart as thanks for helping her. Flash is left with a huge blush afterwards. After he defeats Shining Armor and becomes the new Champion, he and Twilight share their own first kiss together after confessing their feelings for each other, becoming an Official Couple.
  • Graceful Loser: Despite losing to Doc during the Hoof Cup, Flash sends his congratulations to him and amicably shakes hands with him.
  • Heroic BSoD: Flash enters one after his crushing defeat against Lightning Blitz in the finals of the Hoofington Battle Tournament, feeling he let everyone down and failed to keep his promise to Grand Hoof, even wondering if his way of training his Pokémon is correct after all. This is unfortunately worsened when he needs to leave Hopper in the Dragon Kingdom, so he can become the next king of the dragons. After pushing himself and his team for several days straight without resting, he finally comes out of it after letting his anger out to Twilight and getting an encouraging speech from her.
  • Heroic RRoD: Flash goes through one of these, ironically during his Heroic BSoD, in "The Pokérus Training Ground". When his Pokémon are infected with Pokérus, a "disease" that temporarily increases a Pokémon's stats by a large margin, he pushes them all and himself harder than ever before for several days straight in an attempt to catch up to Lightning Blitz and his team, barely stopping to eat or sleep. When his friends try to stop him, his sleep-deprived state combined with his previous Heroic BSoD causes him to lash out at them and accuse them of always holding him back. Eventually, he works himself and his team so hard they all collapse in the middle of the night from exhaustion. Thankfully, Twilight is nearby and helps nurse him back to health quickly, as well as talk him down and ensure him everything will be okay.
  • Indy Ploy: He initially didn't bother making a plan before his battles, because he knew it was impossible to plan for every little thing, and just made things up as he went, mainly by attacking a lot. He downplays this later when he starts making strategies beforehand, but still manages to come up with unexpected ideas on the fly that surprise his opponents.
  • Oblivious to Love: Despite being a bit of a Chick Magnet, he is completely oblivious to their feelings for him. This is most prominent at the ending of Voice of the Ocean, when Sonata Dusk tells him she loves him, only for him to miss what she said due to the noise from the crowd nearby, and him being the only one in the group not to hear her confession.
  • O.O.C. Is Serious Business: At the peak of his Heroic BSoD, Flash shows a lot of frightening signs that shows he isn't his usual Nice Guy self. After his Pokémon are infected with Pokérus, he pushes them harder than ever before to make sure they become as strong as possible, going several days without breaking for sleep or food, he lashes out at his friends when they try to get him to stop, saying he is sick of them bossing him around and holding him back and maybe he would be better off without them, and when his hair is ruined when he is accidentally hit by Viper's flamethrower he doesn't react at all, saying it doesn't matter.

    Springer

Riolu->Lucario

Flash's starter Pokémon and faithful partner. He has the unique ability of being able to use Aura Sphere, a move that Riolu can normally only learn after evolving into Lucario.
  • 11th-Hour Superpower: During the climax of his battle with Galladin in Flash and Shining's championship match, Springer finally evolves into a Lucario when his bond with Flash overwhelms the Everstone energy that was keeping him from evolving.
  • Abdicate the Throne: After he defeats the Lucario that was the leader of his old pack he was offered the chance to be their new leader. But he chose to remain with Flash instead, and passed on the position of leader to one of his old friends.
  • Accessory-Wearing Cartoon Animal: In "Pokémon Fashion Fad", he is given a red bandanna and some sports bandages by Coco Pommel, which both show his inner warrior while letting him keep his cuteness.
  • Bare-Fisted Monk: A Fighting type and knows moves such as Force Palm and Drain Punch.
  • Big Brother Mentor: He acts as one to both Hopper and Astro. Although both of them are trained by Flash, they both view Springer like a big brother, and he is just as encouraging to them as Flash.
  • Dark and Troubled Past: When he was with his old pack, before he met Flash, he demonstrated his ability to use Aura Sphere without needing to evolve. The Lucario that acted as the pack leader recognized he was special and could easily take leadership from him if he evolved, so he lured him away and exposed him to the energy of an Everstone to prevent him from ever evolving, with implications he was also planning to kill him before Flash and Shining Armor interfered. Luckily things turned around for him quickly, when he was caught by Shining Armor and given to Flash after the two became quick friends.
  • Foreshadowing: When first discussing evolution in "The Evolution Solution" and how Riolu normally evolve, the others say that Springer might be close to evolving soon due to his close bond with Flash and that it is surprising he hasn't evolved yet. Flash nervously says that evolution isn't everything and he doesn't care if Springer doesn't evolve. It is later revealed Springer can't evolve because he absorbed energy from an Everstone, meaning he is unlikely to ever evolve.
  • Handicapped Badass: He was exposed to the energy of an Everstone, meaning he will likely remain a Riolu forever. Despite this though, he still constantly proves to be one of Flash's best Pokémon, and more than once has learned powerful moves that were thought to be impossible for Riolu to learn until evolving. He is no longer this as of "We Are the Champions" though, when he finally evolves thanks to his bond with Flash being so powerful is allows him to overcome the Everstone energy he absorbed.
  • I Choose to Stay: After he defeated the Lucario leader of his old pack, Flash tried to leave him with his fellow Riolu, thinking he would be happier with them. But Springer chose to stay with Flash, with the two tearfully reuniting.
  • The Leader: All of Flash's other Pokémon openly acknowledge him as this for them.
  • Pint-Sized Powerhouse: Despite being small and unevolved, Springer shows he can still fight against opponents much larger than him.
  • Shipper on Deck: The ending of "Love, Pokémon Style" basically confirms that he is this for Flash and Twilight. When Spike asks Flash what he thinks "his type" of girl is, Flash answers he isn't actually sure but thinks he'll know what kind of girl he likes when he meets her, causing Springer to facepalm and groan "Oh, brother..." in his own language.
  • Throwing Off the Disability: In "We Are The Champions", his bond with Flash becomes so powerful that it overcomes the Everstone Energy he absorbed years ago, allowing him to finally evolve into a Lucario, and giving him the boost needed to defeat Galladin and win Flash the Equestria championship.

    Skyler

Chickling->Wingust->Tornavian

The first Pokémon Flash officially caught on his journey and serving as the standard regional bird Pokémon for Flash's team.
  • Blow You Away: Natural, given he's a Flying type and the "Common Bird" of the Equestria Region. Once he fully evolves into Tornavian he learns "Tornado Burst", a move that forms a tornado around him, also increasing his own speed.
  • Heroic Rematch: He loses his first battle against Tank "The Bolt and the Butterflies", and later loses again in the same chapter despite training and learning Steel Wing, though putting up a better battle. When they finally battle again in "Spectrum Smack Down", Skyler finally wins after evolving into Tornavian in the middle of the battle.
  • Scissors Cuts Rock: Despite being part Normal type, he can deal damage to Ghost types thanks to his "Scrappy" ability.

    Riptide

Aquana->Spranitor->Reptidal

The second Pokémon Flash caught. Riptide was originally the Aquana from Professor Celestia's lab, which new trainers could potentially choose as their starter. He followed Flash on the early parts of his journey, until Flash and Twilight realized he wanted for Flash to be his trainer.
  • Composite Character: He has shades of Ash's Oshawott and Chimchar.
    • Like Oshawott, he's a Water Starter for the Equestria Region and ran away from the lab because he wanted Flash to be his trainer, and was somewhat of a crybaby.
    • Like Chimchar, he is mercilessly mocked and called "weak" by Flash's jerkass main rival, Lightning Blitz. This resolves for Riptide to get stronger and beat him one day, and forms a rivalry with Lightning's Electric type, Chimplug/Gorillamp.
  • Critical Status Buff: Like most other Water type starters, he has the "Torrent" ability, which increases the power of his Water type moves when he is low on health. He first uses this ability in "Battling at High Tidal", giving him the boost he needs to defeat Tidal's Leviapent.
  • Dream-Crushing Handicap: Subverted; Twilight notes that Riptide has the "Adamant" Nature, which decreases the power of Special Attacks. Since most Water types are Special Attackers, this seems like a major hinderance for Riptide, and Twilight suggests that Flash should consider getting a new Water type. Instead, Flash focuses on teaching Riptide Physical Moves, which are boosted by his nature instead.
  • Elemental Punch: Knows "Ice Punch".
  • Heroic Rematch: After losing to Lightning Blitz and his Chimplug/Gorillamp twice previously, Riptide finally manages to defeat them during the Equestria League finals.
  • Instant Expert: Zig-zagged. After evolving into Reptidal he learns the move "Aqua Break", and uses it to great effect against the army of Trevenant attacking him, Flash, and the rest of Flash's Pokémon. The very next chapter though shows that compared to other, more experienced Reptidals, he is just swinging his sword around wildly. But, Terramar helps him practice by having Riptide copy the movements of his own Reptidal, and after a few hours of practicing over a few days Riptide becomes a Master Swordsman.
  • Katanas Are Just Better: His "Aqua Break" move takes the form of a katana made of water.
  • Lovable Lizard: He's a water lizard and is absolutely adorable and friendly.
  • Red Baron: In the chapter "The Ocean Champion", Riptide wins the tournament held by Reptidal once every five years, earning the title of "Ocean Champion".

    Prongs

Thawn->Chitaleaf->Stagrowth

The third Pokémon Flash caught. Acting as the guardian of the White Tail Woods, he refused to let any of his friends get caught by trainers, until Flash helped him save his friends from a storm and realized trainers weren't the monsters he thought they were.
  • Green Thumb: Being the Grass starter type he knows several grass moves, such as Energy Ball, Leech Seed, and Horn Leech.
  • In a Single Bound: He knows "Bounce", letting him leap high in the air and move with high agility.
  • Life Drain: He knows "Leech Seed", using it to slowly drain his enemies of their energy. He replaces it with "Horn Leech" once he's fully evolved.
  • The Marvelous Deer: Thawn are classified as the "grass fawn" Pokémon. By the time he is fully evolved he is a full grown deer.
  • Red Baron: He became known as "The Prince of the Forest". Before the championship battle with Shining Armor, Flash thinks that Prongs should be called "The King of the Forest" now.

    Viper

Hisscor->Anahakka->Vipeacon

The fourth Pokémon Flash caught. Originally belonging to another trainer, Viper destroyed his Pokeball and abandoned his former trainer due to him being too lazy and forcing him to do all the work. He witnessed Flash training along side his other Pokémon, and was eventually caught after a hard-fought battle against Riptide.
  • Battle Amongst the Flames: This is invoked during his battle with Trixie's Hatterene. Since Hatterene has a major speed increase due to Trick Room, Flash takes advantage of the Forest Field they are battling on and has Viper set the whole field ablaze. The fire ends up restricting Hatterene's movements, bringing her if she gets too close to the fire, and giving Viper Home Field Advantage. The flames die down once the battle ends in a draw.
  • Killer Bear Hug: Fittingly for a snake, he can wrap around his opponents and constrict them. He then takes it a step further when he learns "Pyro Coil" after fully evolving, where he wraps himself around his opponent then bites down on his own tail and breaths down it, causing his body to explode in flames and engulfing the one he is constricting too.
  • Man Bites Man: He knows moves like Bite, Crunch, and Poison Fang, which makes sense considering he is based on a posionous snake.
  • Poisonous Person: He is part Poison type, along with part Fire. Fitting, given he is a snake.
  • Snakes Are Sinister: He is s fire snake and was initially an antagonist when he first appeared, and continued to be a bit selfish even after Flash caught him. Gets subverted later after he becomes kinder to everyone after Flash's behavior rubs off on him.
  • Status Effects: Due to being both a Fire and Poison type, he can inflict Burn or Poison damage to his opponents. He is also notably the only one of Flash's Pokémon that can cause two potential status conditions, while all his others only have one, if that.
  • Took a Level in Kindness: He initially starts off very rude and selfish, often disobeying Flash's orders and doing whatever it wanted in battles. But, thanks to Flash's influence and friendship it slowly becomes much nicer to the rest of the group. This is lampshaded during Camp Everfree's double battle competition, when he jumps in front of Roserade's Magical Leaf attack to protect Shine, with Doc noting how much of a contrast this is from how he originally was.

    Hopper

Egg->Hoppin->Velocirush->Skeidran

The fifth Pokémon Flash caught. Stolen by hunters as just an egg, Flash and the gang found him abandoned in a bush, only for him to immediately hatch from it. After being protected from the hunters by Flash and the others, and witnessing how strong he and Springer were, Hopper aspired to be just as strong himself, allowing himself to be caught and join Flash's team.
  • Absurdly Youthful Mother: Father example, but when Hopper returns during the Equestria League finals, Ryu reveals Princess laid their egg a week ago and they are going to be parents. Spike points out that Hopper isn't even a year old yet, though this may be justified given Pokémon biology and how they potentially grow up much faster than humans.
  • Awesome Moment of Crowning: At the end of Equestrian Adventures his father Titan passes on the title of king of dragons to him, after he finishes his Rite of Passage by learning Wyvern Wing.
  • The Baby of the Bunch: He is this for awhile after his introduction, due to being caught by Flash shortly after hatching from his egg. He eventually grows out of it by the time he evolves into a Velocirush.
  • Babies Ever After: "Lives Full of Harmony and Chaos" shows that three years after Flash becomes champion, Hopper now has three kids of his own with Princess, all of which are still Hoppin, and Hopper is raising his firstborn son to replace him as King of Dragons someday.
  • The Bus Came Back: He returns twice during Equestrian Champions. First, he and the rest of the Dragon Kingdom answer Flash's call to come to the Crystal Empire to help him stop Sombra, with Hopper properly reuniting with Flash and the others afterwards and meeting Astro. Then, he temporarily returns to Flash's team to help him win his battle against Lightning Blitz in the Equestria League finals.
  • Fourth-Date Marriage: Hopper gains a crush on Princess after just laying eyes on her. She shows similar interest in him, with the two of them having a secret date together one night. After Princess is impressed by Hopper's strength and good heart, she asks to become his mate with the Skeidran bonding pose, which Hopper accepts. Essentially meaning the two of them become married only days after first meeting.
  • Love at First Sight: Hopper gains a crush on Princess, the shiny Skeidran, after laying eyes on her for the first time. Princess shows some interest in him too, and after she witnesses his strength the two of them become mates.
  • Man Bites Man: Hopper eventually learns Bite, and later upgrades it to Crunch.
  • Our Dragons Are Different: After evolving into Skeidran, he is technically a dual Normal Flying type, but is classified as the "Proto-Dragon Pokémon". He learns a few Dragon type moves like Dragon Tail and Wyvern Wing, and gains the ability "Dragon Heart", which increases the power of all Dragon type moves he uses.
Cloud: That's why Skeidran are considered one of the strongest Dragon-types, even if it isn't one. It has all of their strengths and none of their weaknesses.
  • Put on a Bus: At the end of Equestrian Adventures, Flash reluctantly decides to leave Hopper in the Dragon Kingdom under Ryu's care, so that Hopper can become the next king of dragons, and stay with his new mate Princess.
  • Really Royalty Reveal: The final arc of Equestrian Adventures reveals that Hopper is the prince of dragons and heir to the Dragon Kingdom.
  • Rite of Passage: After it is revealed that Hopper is the prince of dragons, it is explained that he will become the next king after he learns the strongest Dragon type move Skeidran can learn, Wyvern Wing. Hopper learns the move in the climax in his battle against Cadmus's Galvern, and so afterwards his father Titan passes on the title of king of the dragons to him.

    Astro

Egg->Starvern->Galvern

The sixth and final Pokémon Flash caught. After defeating Cadmus, Flash was given a Pokémon egg by the citizens of the Dragon Kingdom as a thank you gift. The egg eventually hatched into a shiny Starvern. Energetic and often impatient, Astro was amazed by the world around him and wanted to see it all, but eventually realized that Flash was trying to protect him from the dangers that were also in the world.
  • Awesome by Analysis: During Flash's Gym Battle with Ember, Astro watches how her Galvern flies. When it is his turn to battle, he eventually evolves into Galvern himself, and copies the way he saw Ember's Galvern flying, making him an Instant Expert.
  • The Baby of the Bunch: He takes up this role from Shine upon hatching from his egg. He grows out of it after evolving into Galvern.
  • Bound and Gagged: A variation happens to him during his battle with Trixie's Hatterene in the League. Hatterene manages to get behind him and splits her hair lock in strands to restrain him and hold him in place, and wrap around his mouth to clamp it shut, preventing him from fighting back. With Astro defenseless, Hatterene turned him around and planted a Draining Kiss on his head, with Astro only able to groan through his closed mouth as she drained him of his energy. Once she has drained him of all his energy, knocking him out, she gently places his limp body on the ground and unwraps her hair from his body.
  • Constantly Curious: Astro is amazed by the world around him after hatching and always wants to see more of it. This resulted in him wandering off by himself to explore. After he agrees to behave himself, Flash lets him stay out of his Pokeball so he can see more of the world.
  • Dark Is Not Evil: Despite being part Dark type, Astro is pretty friendly, if a bit mischievous.
  • Death Glare: He knows "Leer", glaring at his opponent to lower their defense. This ends up being a key move in him defeating Sugarcoat's Morgrem. Though he no longer has it after evolving.
  • Drama-Preserving Handicap: He is referenced as the best weapon Flash has against Trixie due to his type advantage against her team of primary Psychic types. However, when the two battle in the League Astro is only able to defeat one of her Pokémon, before being beaten by her Hatterene.
  • Heroic Rematch: He loses to Sugarcoat's Morgrem in "Reaching for the Stars", but after spending an entire day training with Flash they face off in a rematch, with Astro and Flash using a new strategy from what they experienced in their first battle, with Astro coming out the winner.
  • Heroic Second Wind: In his battle with Ember's Champagoon, he comes close to defeat after taking severe damage. After hearing everyone cheering him on though, he evolves into Galvern, allowing him to continue to battle and eventually win.
  • Man Bites Man: He had a habit of biting people when he first hatched, and after some training with Flash he upgrades it to Crunch.
  • Victorious Roar: He lets one out after defeating Ember's Champagoon.
  • The Worf Effect: After Astro fully evolves and is shown to now be on the same level as the rest of Flash's team, he suffered from this a bit during the Equestria League. Astro only defeated two opponents in the whole tournament, Trixie's Slowking and Shining's Oaking, and would often be shown struggling or outright losing against his other oppoents to establish how powerful they were. Especially noticeable since before the League Astro only ever lost two official battles.
    • After defeating Trixie's Slowking, Astro loses to her Hatterene, due to a combination of Hatterene having a double type-advantage against him due to being part Fairy-Type, and Trixie's Trick Room making Hatterene much faster than him. Though he does manage to get a few good hits in with a lucky Shadow Ball, landing a Crunch to her waist, and throwing her in the air while spinning to try to make her dizzy, Hatterene manages to easily beat him by getting behind him and using her Prehensile Hair to restrain him and clamp his mouth shut, essentially leaving him Bound and Gagged with no way of fighting back or defending himself. Not only does this eliminate Flash's best weapon against Trixie's team of Psychic-Types, but she defeats him with a Draining Kiss attack, which healed whatever damage he managed to inflict on her, restoring her to full health.
    • Astro briefly fights Heath's Blazegon in the second round of the League. Though he doesn't officially lose, and is shown to fight evenly against Blazegon for awhile, Flash returns him to his Pokeball before he can crash into the pool of melted metal below when he is knocked down by Blazegon, with Flash relying on Riptide to finish the job.
    • Astro ends up easily overpowered by Applejack's Clobberoo in the semi-finals. Clobberoo has the type-advantage in the battle and smacks Astro around the whole battle, making Astro the first of Flash's Pokémon eliminated in the match.

Traveling Companions

    Twilight Sparkle
Professor Celestia's assistant. Celestia has her join Flash on his journey so she can gain the experience needed to put her knowledge of Pokémon to good use. She frequently clashes and argues with Flash over their different views and approaches to situations. She eventually becomes one of his closest friends and confidants.
  • Aesop Amnesia: In the Camp Everfree arc, Twilight forgets everything she learned since traveling with Flash and reverts back to her old way of thinking. This is because she met Timber, who thinks a lot like how she used to think, and "justified" that way of thinking to her. She finally snaps out of it after having her Jerkass Realization.
  • Adaptational Jerkass: In canon Twilight could be a bit of a Deadpan Snarker at times, but was overall nice and helpful. Here, she is quick to throw insults at Flash for his attitude or questioning her judgment, and has even resorted to violence against him once or twice (albeit with it being played for laughs). She slowly grows out of this via her Character Development.
  • First Kiss: She and Flash share their first kiss together after Flash defeats Shining Armor and becomes the new Champion, confessing their feelings for each other, and becoming an Official Couple.
  • Green-Eyed Monster: She shows a bit of jealousy whenever someone else flirts with Flash, and usually ends up taking it out on him.
    • There are several instances of this happening with Sunset Shimmer. After she kisses Flash at the end of Total Eclixie the Heart, leaving everyone shocked and Flash blushing after having his First Kiss stolen, she tells him to "get over himself" and reminds him of his chores to do. Later in "The Hoof Cup Begins", after Sunset blows Flash a kiss at the end of her phone call, while everyone else is snickering at Flash being flustered, she just tells him to get his head back in the game.
    • With Sonata Dusk, after Sonata confesses her love to Flash at the end of Voice of the Ocean, while everyone else present is congratulating Flash, she just crosses her arms and asks him with a glare what he's going to say to Sonata later when the concert is over. When she meets Sonata again in "The Ocean Champion", the memory of Sonata's confession enters her mind while they are talking together, and a sense of dread fills her.
    • At the start of Rival and Darkness when a girl that is a fan of Flash's asks for a picture with him and grabs his arm in a hug, she just crosses her arms and gives a small glare.
  • Jerkass Ball: She grabs it hard during the Camp Everfree arc. Upon arriving at camp and meeting Timber, she forgets everything she has learned since traveling with Flash and reverts to her old way of thinking, also becoming a much bigger jerkass to Flash than usual, constantly insulting him and comparing him to Timber. This nearly leads to them deciding to stop traveling together entirely. Luckily, she drops the ball after having a Jerkass Realization.
  • With Friends Like These...: Despite being friends with Flash, she constantly talks down to him condescendingly and never seems staisfied with what he does, leading to the two of them to have many arguments. She eases up on this a lot after the Camp Everfree arc, but still occasionally slips back into it, like when she pushed his buttons too much during his Heroic BSoD after he lost to Lightning, leading him to snap at her and the others.
  • You Are Better Than You Think You Are: She says this to Flash in "The Pokérus Training Ground" to help get him out of his Heroic BSoD, reminding him of everything he has accomplished and everyone he has helped, and how all their friends recognize he is worthy of being the next Equestrian champion, no matter how many times he loses to Lightning.

    Twilight's Pokémon

Owlicious

Psychick->Owlolar

Owlicious is Twilight's starter Pokémon, and her close friend. They met one night when Owlicious returned Twilight's report to her after it blew away, and ended up staying with her for the night. He enjoys studying and keeping things in order just as much as Twilight
  • Adaptational Badass: Owlicious was a crafty pet who could outwit much larger threats than him, but never really had much combat prowess in the show. In this series, he's a Pokémon used to compete in tournaments, so he naturally comes with a more offensive moveset here.
  • Birds of a Feather: He shares Twilight's interests in studying and is one of her best companions.
  • Cute Owl: He is very cute and friendly with Twilight and her friends, especially as a Psychick. But he can also be an Ominous Owl to his enemies.

Peewee

Terragon

The group met Peewee while traveling through a cave, where he was abandoned by the rest of his flock for being too small. He and Spike immediately became friends, but due to Spike being too young to be a trainer he was unable to catch Peewee himself. Twilight caught Peewee for him and is currently holding on to him for Spike until Spike becomes old enough for Peewee to be his starter Pokémon, but until then Peewee officially belongs to Twilight and can be used by her in any battle she chooses.
  • Adaptational Species Change: More so than any of the pets from canon. While all the pets are changed from regular animals into Pokémon, they mostly remain the same type of creature they are in canon. Peewee however goes from being a phoenix in canon to a dragon.
  • Blood Knight: Downplayed example, but after watching several matches in the Hoof Cup, he flies over to Twilight before her second match, wanting to have a turn to battle himself.
  • Pint-Sized Powerhouse: He is constantly looked down on for being smaller than the average Terragon, but has shown to be capable of defeating Pokémon several times his size.

Shine

Egg->Galarian Ponyta->Galarian Rapidash

Originally an egg that was given to Camp Everfree's as part of one of their activities, Shine was given to Sapphire Cabin to watch over until she hatched the next day. Shine took an immediate liking to Twilight, recognizing her voice from the lullaby she sang, and it was unanimously decided Twilight would be the one to keep her.
  • The Baby of the Bunch: She briefly shares this role with Hopper after she hatches, but then becomes the sole holder of it after he evolves. She finally grows out of it when Astro hatches from his egg, and she acts like a Cool Big Sister to him.
  • Break the Cutie: She bursts into tears and leaps at Hopper hugging him when Hopper needs to stay in the Dragon Kingdom to become the next king of the dragons, devastated that she is losing her best friend.
  • Cool Big Sister: She takes up this role for Astro shortly after he hatches. She lets him bite her on her tail since she doesn't feel pain there, and then swings her tail around while he holds on to take him for a ride.
  • Excellent Judge of Character: Fitting with her official Pokedex entry, Shine can see into the hearts of others. Shortly after hatching, she immediately accepts Twilight and warms up to Flash quickly, but is terrified by Timber Spruce and hides away from him.
  • Not Afraid of You Anymore: She manages to push past her fear of Piedoom in order to keep Twilight safe, and in the process of doing do she evolves in order to gain the power to protect her.
  • Why Did It Have to Be Snakes?: Shine developed a great fear of Piedoom due to the experience against one at Camp Everfree. She visibly panics when Big Score has his own Piedoom attack her. This is later deconstructed when Cadance realizes that something is holding Shine back, due to trauma she suffered. Later, when Shine panics and freezes up when facing another Piedoom owned by a poacher, and Twilight is put in danger because of it, she faces her fear and battles the Piedoom because she realizes the one thing she fears more than Piedoom is spending the rest of her life without Twilight in it.

    Spike
Twilight's younger brother who joins her and Flash on their journey across Equestria. He has a particular fondness for Dragon type Pokémon.
  • Cuteness Proximity: When the group run into five Dranby on their way to Cloudsdale City, Spike stares at them with stars in his eyes, a reaction only matched by Fluttershy. He tries to ask Twilight to catch them, but when she points out they might not want to be separated he tries to suggest she catch all five, only for her to immediately reject the idea.
  • Deadpan Snarker: He can be just as big of one as Twilight at times. Due to being a kid, he does not hold back on his opinions on something, such as telling Twilight early on she sucks at battling, or pointing out how the group always seems to take the most dangerous route from town to town.
  • Doorstop Baby: He was left in front of Twilight's home in a basket on a rainy day, with just a note saying "Hello, I'm Spike. Please look after me."
  • Dragon Tamer: What he hopes to be one day. Spike loves Dragon-Types, ever sense he was a little kid. He is slowly on his way, since Peewee will be his starter Pokémon one day.
  • Only One Finds It Fun: Played with to show his love for Dragon-Types. Twilight says that when he was younger his class went on a school trip to Professor Celestia's lab. When the other kids all saw Celestia's Champagoon they screamed and ran away, but Spike just walked up to her and patted her on the head.
  • Precocious Crush: He develops a crush on Rarity just like in canon.
  • Tag Along Kid: He is the only member of the group who is not an official trainer, due to being too young. It was suggested by Flash he join them so he can get first-hand experience for when he becomes a trainer himself in a few years.
  • Wingding Eyes: He gets hearts in his eyes when he sees Rarity for the first time, something the other characters notice.

    Time Turner
The Gym Leader of Trottingham City, more commonly referred to as "Doc", specializing in Steel Pokémon. He is a genius who has made many inventions to help the world and believes in having a plan for everything. After losing to Flash and his surprise battling style though, he realized he needed to learn to adapt to unexpected situations and the world around him, and joined Flash on his journey so he can see the world for himself and learn from it.
  • Ascended Extra: Originally a minor supporting character in the canon show, Time Turner has been upgraded to a major character in this series.
  • Dark Horse Victory: You'd be forgiven for thinking that Flash or Lightning would end up winning the Hoof Cup, but Doc manages to beat out both of them.
  • Didn't See That Coming: During his Gym Battle with Flash, he thought his victory was guaranteed when Springer was blinded, since Tockwork has no aura for him to sense, leaving him defenseless. But, to his shock, Springer manages to keep fighting by reading Flash's aura instead and copying his movements. Doc is so shocked by this turn of events and that one of his plans failed that he stays frozen in place for several moments, not knowing what to do next and unable to give any commands.
  • Extra-ore-dinary: He specializes in Steel-Types.
  • Inseries Nickname: He goes by "Doc" more than his real name "Time Turner".
  • Insufferable Genius: He started out as this, talking down to Flash for his lack of planning ahead. He takes a slice of Humble Pie when one of his "perfect" plans fails due to Flash's quick thinking, realizing he still has a lot to learn.
  • Legacy Character: His nickname "Doc" was passed on to him by his old teacher.

    Time Turner's Pokémon

Higear

  • Out of Focus: It doesn't get a lot of focus compared to Doc's other Pokémon. It is the only member of his team to lack any kind of backstory before becoming part of Doc's team or A Day in the Limelight.

Tockwork

  • The Ace: It was this for Doc's original team, before losing the position to Aggron.
  • Expy: Is one for Cubix, being a supposedly "unfixable" robot that finally springs to life to save a young boy who befriended him while repairing him.
  • Mighty Glacier: It has strong physical strength but is notably very slow. It manages to compensate for this after learning "Overclock" to increase its speed.

Steeledge->Flitanium

  • Defeat Means Friendship: Like other captures throughout the franchise, he initially appears as an antagonist before being defeated by Tockwork and captured by Doc, where it loses all its animosity and becomes a loyal member afterwards.
  • Token Flyer: The only one of Doc's team that can fly.

Lairon->Aggron

  • The Ace: After evolving into Aggron and fighting Heatran, a Legendary Pokémon he has a disadvantage against, to a standstill, he effectively replaces Tockwork as this on Doc's team.
  • Disney Death: When fighting Heatran in Mount Tartarus, the cave they are in begins to collapse and Aggron ends up getting left behind when the exit collapses after everyone else gets through while he is holding off Heatran. As Doc is mourning the apparent death of his friend though, Aggron blasts his way out of the mountain and reunites with everyone.
  • The Glomp: When he gets to stay on Doc's team instead of Doc releasing him to return to his friends like he originally planned, Lairon is so happy he leaps on top of him in a hug, only to accidentally end up crushing him due to his massive size.
  • No-Sell: After evolving into Aggron, he demonstrates his new power by easily deflecting a super-effective Magma Storm from Heatran with barely a single burn mark from it.
  • Off Screen Moment Of Awesome: The conclusion to his fight with Heatran isn't seen. Just that Aggron apparently managed to get away from it and had enough energy left to blast his way out of the mountain and reunite with everyone. But considering that he managed to go toe to toe with a Legendary Pokémon, one that had a type advantage against him no less, and managed to walk away with a Draw is still incredible.
  • The Runt at the End: He is the only canon Pokémon on Doc's team, with the Author's Notes at the end of his debut chapter even saying he doubted anyone was expecting that.

Supporting Characters

    Professor Celestia
Equestria's leading Pokémon Researcher.
  • Adaptational Badass: Her Equestria Girls counterpart was just a principal at a seemingly average school, whereas she's Equestria's number one Pokémon researcher here.
  • All-Loving Hero: Celestia cares about all the Pokémon in her care and extends this to all of her mentees, including Twilight Sparkle and Flash Sentry.
  • Big Good: She's Equestria's leading field researcher on Pokémon and helps set up Flash to become a Pokémon trainer, registering him to become a trainer and giving him the necessary equipment to become one, like a Pokedex.
  • Jerkass Ball: Though she is usually a Reasonable Authority Figure and All-Loving Hero, she grabs the ball at the end of "The Summer of Adventure" when she has Flash's cabin stripped of all but one pity point for him staying out all night to train Shuckle. Though she claims he can't stay out without permission, it is still a cruel act since Flash clearly hadn't been having a good time since arriving at camp and earns him the ire of his friends for his efforts. It also greatly contrasts to Gloriosa, the owner of the camp, who sincerely thanks Flash for all his efforts in befriending Shuckle.
  • Sweet Tooth: Celestia has a love for sweet pastries. She even eats cake in the morning.

    Professor Luna
Celestia's little sister and field researcher, who gathers data to send to Celestia for study and analysis.
  • Always Second Best: She feels this way to her big sister Celestia. No matter what she accomplishes on her own, all anyone ever seems to do is compare her to her sister or believes she only got as far as she did thanks to Celestia. This is shown in flashbacks in "A Sibling's Spat". Celestia and Luna both competed in the Equestria League in separate years, with Celestia taking 3rd place her year and Luna taking 2nd in hers. But, when Luna made it to the finals of her year, all the reporters who interviewed her only asked questions relating to Celestia, or believed Luna only made it as far as she did thanks to her sister training her. Thus, even when Luna managed to do better than her sister she was still in her shadow.
  • Heroic Self-Deprecation: After reviving an Armadiload that is stolen and sent on a rampage by Big Score, Rickashay, and Boulder, Luna blames herself for causing the incident. The protagonists reassure her that it wasn't her fault.
  • So Proud of You: She tells Trixie she is proud of how much she has grown since they first met, and tells her regardless of how her battle with Flash turns out she has already accomplished what few trainers do: make it into the Equestria League.

    Trixie
A boastful trainer who develops a rivalry with Twilight Sparkle.
  • Abusive Parents: She has an emotionally abusive dad. He constantly says how Trixie can never match up to his skills and when she left on her journey he outright said she wouldn't cut it. When Trixie gets her badges stolen, she doesn't want to get replacements because she knows her dad is constantly checking her profile, and if she gets replacement badges with different serial numbers then he will know she lost her old ones and lose whatever respect he has started to gain for her. After she loses in the first round of the Hoof Cup, he calls her just to talk down to her on how ashamed she should be, and eventually hangs up when Flash and Luna defend her. He later tells her it would probably be better to just forfeit against Flash in the Equestria League and save herself the humiliation of losing to him, still showing no confidence in her.
  • Attack Reflector: She shows that she can have her Pokémon use Psychic to change the tracjectory of her oppoent's attacks and fire them right back at them.
  • Calling the Old Man Out: When she talks to her dad before her battle with Flash in the League, she basically tells him she no longer cares about his opinion of her because he never thought she would make it as a trainer but she proved him wrong by making it to the Top 16 of the Equestria League. She tells him no matter what the outcome of her battle with Flash is she already knowsshe is great, right before hanging up on her dad before he can respond.
  • Cradling Your Kill: A downplayed and non-lethal example. When her Hatterene battles Astro during the League they briefly battle in the sky, until Hatterene wins by using her hair to restrain Astro, leaving him Bound and Gagged so he can't defend himself, and draining his energy via a Draining Kiss to the head. Once Astro is fully drained and knocked out, Hatterene gently lowers his limp body to the ground before unwrapping him, instead of just releasing him immediately and letting him crash to the ground.
  • Do Not Go Gentle: She knows that she will most likely lose to Flash when they are paired to battle in the first round in the Equestria League, but decides to make him work for his win. She realizes after her Trick Room is destroyed that Sagic will probably end up going down against the stronger Prongs, but refuses to stop trying. Ultimately, she loses the battle but is still cheered by the crowd for her efforts.
  • Dying Curse: Her Slowking plays with this during her battle with Flash. Once it becomes clear Astro is about to defeat Slowking, Trixie has it use Trick Room right before it can be knocked out. This sets up her main strategy against Flash, with Trick Room proving to be a major problem for Flash for the remainder of the battle.
  • Embarrassing First Name: It is revealed that her real name is "Beatrice". When her friends all learn this after her father calls her it, they all start giggling at it.
    Flash: (through laughter) Beatrice?!
    Trixie: Shut it.
  • Foreshadowing: She has a Slowpoke, and Cedar gives her a King's Rock, meaning her Slowpoke will eventually evolve into a Slowking. It has finally done so as of "Well Sled".
  • Forceful Kiss: When her Hatterene uses Draining Kiss, it is usually while her opponent is restrained, dazed, or otherwise can't resist Hatterene planting her lips on them.
    • She uses it to defeat Astro during their battle, kissing him on his head while she has him Bound and Gagged with her hair and unable to fight back, only able to groan through his clamped mouth as she drains him of energy until he is knocked out and goes limp in her grasp.
    • Although her first attempt to plant a kiss on Viper after he is disoriented by her Psycho Cut fails when he manages to regain his senses and slither out of the way of her approaching lips, she eventually manages to successfully steal a kiss from him twice during their battle. First, when he bites her on her knee-area, she quickly leans down and gives him a quick peck before he can pull away. Then later, she uses her hair to grab him and kiss him again, until he manages to free himself with a point-blank Flamethrower to the face.
  • Friendly Rivalry: Though she starts off on bad terms with Twilight, their rivalry quickly changes into this. She also has this with Flash to an extent, since they are both collecting badges to compete in the Equestria League. She and Flash end up battling in the first round of the Equestria League, with Flash being victorious, but thanking Trixie for the fun battle.
  • Graceful Loser: Trixie has been shown that despite her boasting, she constantly takes defeat well. Much better than she did in canon.
    • After she loses to Twilight in her debut chapter, she honors her deal and relocates her show away from the library.
    • She takes her defeat against Applejack well in The Hoof Cup, defending herself against her father that Applejack was tough.
    • She congrats Double Diamond after he beats her in the Avalanche Sled Race, shaking his hand.
    • After losing to Flash in the first round of the Equestria League, she thanks him for a great battle and for making her time in the League a rush. Later during the finals between Flash and Lightning Blitz, Trixie joins Rarity, Pinkie, and Fluttershy in dressing as cheerleaders to cheer for Flash during the battle.
  • Hoist by Her Own Petard: During her battle with Twilight, she has her Wizentice use Power Trap on Owlicious so it can only use one move, which just so happened to be Calm Mind. At the time this seemed good since it was a useless move for Owlicious at the time, but once Power Trip wore off, Owlicious learned Confusion, and it was greatly powered up due to all the Calm Minds it was forced to use, allowing it to easily overpower Wizentice.
  • Kiss of Death: Her Hatterene knows Draining Kiss. During her battle with Flash in the League, Hatterene uses it to defeat Astro and successfully uses it on Viper twice. It also counts as a Forceful Kiss since Hatterene uses her hair to restrain Astro and Viper as she kisses them.
  • Life Drain: Her Hatterene's knows Draining Kiss, which drains the energy of whoever she kisses and restores herself.
  • Magic Staff: Her Wizentice and all of its evolutions have one. It needs it to use its attacks though, meaning it is helpless if separated from it.
  • Not Quite Flight: During her battle with Flash, she has her Slowking use Psychic on one of the thick branches on the battlefield while standing on it, making it surf through the air.
Luna: Ha! Looks like you don't need wings to fly after all.
  • Oh, Crap!: During her battle with Twilight, once Owlicious learns Confusion and it is powered up by all the Calm Minds he was forced to make earlier, Trixie nervously asks if they should just call the battle a draw. Naturally Twilight refuses her request and proceeds to defeat her.
  • Only Known by Their Nickname: "Trixie" is actually a nickname, since she dislikes her real name "Beatrice".
  • Reality Warper: Her Slowking knows Trick Room, which she uses to great effect in her battle with Flash.
  • "Take That!" Kiss: Her Hatterene's Draining Kiss can be seen as this, partly because she often forces it on her opponent while she has them restrained or disoriented, or by simply grabbing them and forcibly pulling them into a kiss.
  • The Unreveal: It is implied she has a full team of six Pokémon to battle with, but only four of them are ever revealed, leaving her last two a mystery.

    Sunset Shimmer
A young girl chosen to be the guardian of the Legendary Pokémon Eclixie. After she and the group successfully protect Eclixie from Doctor Mechano, Sunset goes off on her own, eventually getting hired as Professor Celestia's new assistant.
  • Adaptation Relationship Overhaul: In canon, she was Celestia's student shortly before Twilight, but left before the start of the series. Here, Twilight was actually Celestia's student first, and Sunset becomes her newest student after Twilight joins Flash on his journey.
  • Forceful Kiss: At the end of Total Eclixie the Heart she surprises Flash by pulling him into a quick kiss before she leaves, as thanks for helping her, and stealing his First Kiss in the process.
  • Projectile Kiss: Downplayed and played for laughs. At the end of her phone call to everyone before the beginning of the Hoof Cup, she blows Flash a kiss goodbye. Although nothing happens, it still flusters Flash and causes him to move his head back, as if trying to avoid the kiss.

    Rainbow Dash
A girl from Cloudsdale City with a headstrong approach to battling and a love for Flying types. She is also aiming for the Equestria League, and thus develops a friendly rivalry with Flash Sentry.
  • Blow You Away: Her team consists entirely of Pokémon that are Flying Types, or at least part Flying.
  • Expy: Her partner, Tank, resembles her pet tortoise from canon. But after he evolves into Soartoise he resembles Terraspin from the Ben 10 series.
  • Defensive "What?": She gives one when she sees everyone giving her knowing smirks after she says goodbye to Soarin.
  • Graceful Loser: Despite losing to Flash in the Hoofington Battle Tournament, Rainbow congratulates him on his victory and tells him to make sure he wins against Lightning.
  • Heroic Rematch: In "Climbing the Mountain" she and Tank lose to Gilda and her Mandibuzz, but afterwards win in a rematch against them, with Tank evolving in the process.
  • Heterosexual Life-Partners: In spite of their differences, Rainbow Dash is a close friend of Fluttershy, growing up together in Cloudsdale City and currently traveling together.
  • History Repeats: When Rainbow faced Spitfire in a Gym Battle, Tank lost to her Tornavian, giving Spitfire the win. Not long afterwards, a similar matchup happened when she and Flash faced off in the semi-finals of the Hoofington Battle Tournament, with Skyler evolving into Tornavian in the middle of the battle to defeat Tank. Rainbow Dash lampshades this afterwards, asking what it is with them losing to Tornavian.
  • Red Oni, Blue Oni: She's the red oni to Fluttershy's blue oni, as she's extremely excitable and eager to get into a Pokémon match, contrasting with Fluttershy's more reserved and pacifistic attitude.
  • Ship Tease: She has this with Soarin throughout "Cloudsdale Sky-Racers". They both form a quick friendship due to having a lot in common like growing up in Cloudsdale and their love for Flying types, end up tying in The Great Cloudsdale Race, and Rainbow noticeably gets red faced when saying goodbye to him.
  • Small Name, Big Ego: When she's introduced, she calls herself the "world's best Flying-Type Pokémon trainer". The fact that the protagonists still can't identify her indicates that her ego is far grater than her actual reputation.
  • Wingding Eyes: She gets stars in her eyes when she sees Soarin's Staraptor, and again when she realizes The Great Cloudsdale Race is happening the next day.
  • Worthy Opponent: Despite winning against Flash both times they first battle, she eagerly accepts him as her new rival because of how quickly he managed improve Skyler between their battles, saying batteling him will get her to the next level.
  • Wrong Genre Savvy: When she faces Doc in the second round of The Hoof Cup, she foolishly gives herself a handicap by sending out Tank to battle against Steeledge, despite the type disadvantage. Ultimately, Rainbow loses the battle, and when she is called out on her recklessness she explains that since other competitors won despite having a type disadvantage she thought she could too. What she didn't realize was they all won because they had a strategy to counter the disadvantage they had.

    Fluttershy
A girl from Cloudsdale and friend of Rainbow Dash. She has a love for nature and all Pokémon, preferring to befriend them than battle with them.
  • Because You Were Nice to Me: Harry, her Grizzor, ultimately chose to stay with her when given the chance because she showed kindness to him by nursing him back to health.
  • I Choose to Stay: Harry the Grizzor was given the choice to return to the forest, which had been his home his whole life, or stay with Fluttershy. He ultimately chose to stay with Fluttershy, since she had shown him kindness, to help her achieve her dream and allowed himself to be caught by her.
  • Red Oni, Blue Oni: She's the blue oni to Rainbow's red oni, as she's a calm pacifist to contrast with Rainbow's more brash attitude.
  • Took a Level in Badass: After she catches Harry, she resolves to do this to be a better trainer for him. She shows she has accomplished this by the time the group meets her and Rainbow Dash again after camp, with her actually having a Pokémon battle with another trainer and winning, with it also being revealed Angel evolved from a Bunnop to Bunounce. She later chooses to participate in The Hoofington Battle Tournament with everyone else, instead of sitting it out like she did with The Hoof Cup.

    Applejack
A girl from Applewood City, who sets out on a quest to enter the Equestria League to learn all she can to properly run her family's farm. She develops a friendly rivalry with Flash Sentry.
  • Deadpan Snarker: She has a tendency to throw deadpan remarks at other people, especially at Rarity's expense.
  • Graceful Loser: In her first casual Pokémon match with Flash, Applejack graciously accepts a draw and agrees with Flash to settle the matter at a different time.
  • Heterosexual Life-Partners: She and Rarity are close friends from Applewood City and they are now traveling together to acquire badges.
  • Rank Up: After she loses to Flash in the semi-finals of the Equestria League, Granny Smith officially makes her the new Gym Leader of the Applewood City Gym.

    Rarity
A girl from Applewood City and friend of Applejack. She possesses a love for fashion and glamour, but is generous enough to make personal sacrifices for the benefit of others.
  • Amazon Brigade: All of her Pokémon are female.
  • Desperately Looking for a Purpose in Life: She joins Applejack on her journey to gather badges and enter the Equestria League, but admits she has no idea what her own goal should be. She eventually decides she wants to both be a Pokémon Coordinator and be a Pokémon fashion designer.
  • Heterosexual Life-Partners: She and Applejack are close friends from Applewood City and they are now traveling together to acquire badges.
  • Smooch of Victory: Downplayed, but she gives Flash a kiss on the cheek as she is saying goodbye to him after he defeated Sombra.

    Pinkie Pie
A friendly and energetic trainer that tries to spread joy and laughter to every person and Pokémon she meets.
  • Born Lucky: Pinkie has incredible luck, which lets her accomplish things that should for all intents be impossible.
    • She reveals at Camp Everfree she managed to catch a Milcery, a Pokémon only native to the Galar Region, because it randomly appeared next to her one day and allowed itself to be caught.
    • While fishing for a Water-type at Camp Everfree she manages to pull out three different Pokémon on the same line; Dewpider, Quagsire, and Oshawott. Timber even mentions he has never seen that Oshawott in the lake before.
  • Jerk with a Heart of Gold: Her Bloxx, when it originally belonged to Cheese Sandwich, didn't enjoy partying or being friendly with others, preferring to have fun by battling them. When Cheese gives Bloxx to Pinkie though, knowing she can take better care of him than he can, Bloxx gives his former trainer a goodbye hug, to his surprise.
  • Stone Wall: Her Mellow becomes this when it evolves into Mellowmarsh. It becomes so squishy it is almost impossible to damage with physical attacks. Special attacks are a different story though.
  • Pint-Sized Powerhouse: Pinkie's Gumigator, Gummy, might be small, but he is tough enough to not flinch when a Grotle tries to throw him, and is able to toss the Grotle instead while biting its tail.

    Derpy
A clumsy but friendly mail courier that Flash and the others occasionally meet during their travels.
  • The Klutz: Nice as she is, Derpy is prone to making some accidental mistakes, such as causing an avalanche because she started jumping in celebration for sneaking past a group of sleeping Gravelers.
  • Ship Tease: She gets several moments with Doc throughout the series, with the "Where Are They Now?" Epilogue showing that the two are still close years later.

    Cloud Clipper
Flash Sentry's grandma, and the former Gym Leader of Cloudsdale City.
  • The Ghost: Flash mentioned her several times, before she finally made a physical appearance in "Birds of a Feather".
  • Parental Substitute: She has been taking care of her grandson Flash Sentry ever since his parents died in an accident when he was four years old, being his only living relative.
  • Retired Badass: She was the former Gym Leader of Cloudsdale City before retiring to raise her grandson Flash. She shows she can still battle though, such as when she defended her championship title at the Sky Battle Tournament, making it all the way to the finals, even defeating Doc, a Gym Leader himself, in the semi-finals.

    Heath Burns
A young trainer with a Lizash as his partner. He is first encountered at the Hoof Cup as one of the competitors, and has made a few occasional appearances since then.
  • Ascended Extra: He was originally just a competitor encountered at the Hoof Cup, being eliminated in the first round and not given much character beyond that. He made several subsequent appearances, flushing out his character more and his relationship with his Lizash as it evolved, even becoming rivals with Flash Sentry.
  • Broken Win/Loss Streak: In both of the tournament Heath competed in, he was eliminated in the very first round. When he competes in the Equestria League though, he makes it past the first round, defeating Sandalwood, before losing to Flash in the second round.
  • Plot-Mandated Friendship Failure: His Lizash starts disobeying him in "A Friendship Rekindled" after it evolves into Blazard. This causes it to run wild, and damage its Pokeball, becoming a Wild Pokémon again and forcing Heath to win its friendship back and stop any other trainers from hunting it due to its rampage.
  • The Reveal: For all of his appearances throughout the series, the only known Pokémon he had was his Lizash, and it’s subsequent evolutions Blazard and Blazegon. When he competes in the Equestria League though, it is revealed he also has a Magmortar and Darmanitan. His other Pokémon however remain unknown.
  • Secret Test of Character: He and Blazard go through this is "Quest for the Dragonheart Orb". They need to go through three tests to prove they are worthy of possessing the orb. While the first two are pretty straight forward, testing their friendship and intelligence, the last one is a bit different, testing their courage. Blazard must fight Hydraworm, the guardian of the orb, but when it becomes clear Blazard can't win, Heath forfeits the fight, not wanting his friend to get hurt fighting an impossible battle. They think they failed at first, only to receive the orb and find out they passed the final test, by having the courage to admit defeat.
Cadance: You had the courage to stand up and face an opponent that's vastly stronger than you. That's something many trainers have. But there's another type of courage that only an exceptional few have. The courage to swallow one's pride and stand down when they know an opponent is stronger than them. Because admitting we're weaker then somebody else, even if it's obvious, can be one of the most terrifying things to do.
  • Underestimating Badassery: When he faced off against Doc in the first round of the Hoof Cup, he boasts that he has the advantage due to Doc being a Steel-Type Gym Leader, so he knows what to expect from him and has a Fire-Type ready to counter him. Doc turns the tables on him and manages to beat him through strategy to overcome the type disadvantage.

    Sonata Dusk
The youngest of a trio of sisters from Vocanctus, who holds a special connection with the Legendary Pokémon, Sirenity.
  • Adaptational Heroism: She isn't evil here like she is in canon, and wants to live a peaceful happy life with her sisters. She even legitimately falls in love with Flash Sentry, but accepts that Twilight is better for him than her without issue.
  • Big "NO!": She lets one out in the first chapter of Voice of the Ocean, after the apparent death of her sisters.
  • Blatant Lies: After she runs away from Flash and Springer after they saved her from Black and White, Flash and Springer later chase after her with Flash saying he just wants to ask her what happened and if she is okay. Sonata just tells him she doesn't know what he's talking about before telling him to leave her alone and running away.
  • Broken Bird: She becomes emotionally broken after the accident that apparently claimed the lives of her sisters. She spent the year afterwards depressed and unable to sing. She begins to get back to her old self after Flash befriends her and she is reunited with her sisters.
  • The Chosen One: It is confirmed that only she has the ability to control Sirenity, not Adagio or Aria. Meaning she is the true priestess.
  • The Glomp: She tackles Flash to the ground in a hug when they meet again in "The Ocean Champion".
  • Hand Gagging: When Flash rescues her from Black and White, he drags her along as he and Springer run through the city, until he pulls her with them between two buildings and covers her mouth to keep her quiet until Malamar and Cloyster pass them.
  • I Want My Beloved to Be Happy: She falls in love with Flash after everything he did for her in Voice of the Ocean, but when she meets him and his friends again in "The Ocean Champion", she realizes that Twilight knows more about him than she does and is better for him than her. Instead of getting jealous or trying to compete with Twilight for him, she accepts this and happily hugs them both goodbye, whispering to Twilight that she gets it and Flash is all hers.
  • Karmic Jackpot: The act of stopping to help Springer get some water from the metal tap ended up helping her improve her life by having Flash notice her, and going out of his way to help her when she is attacked and help her overcome her grief.
  • Love Confession: Voice of the Ocean ends with her telling Flash that she loves him before running off to perform with her sisters. Ironically though, Flash was the only member of the group that didn't hear her love confession, saying he couldn't hear her over the crowd. The other's are so frustrated by this they refuse to tell him what she said.
  • Pet the Dog: She takes the time to help Springer get some water from a metal tap to cool himself off, even though she was still in a depressed state and had nothing to gain from it. She smiles a bit seeing Springer happy, until Flash arrives and she runs off.
  • Rescue Romance: A one-sided example between her and Flash. She was already started developing a crush on him after he previously saved her from Black and White and tried to help her through her grief, but after he once again saves her from Guile and constantly encouraged her to use her powers to save Sirenity, she ended up falling in love with him. Though he never realized this himself, and Sonata eventually decided not to purse a relationship with him despite her feelings, because she realized Twilight was better for him than her.
  • Shipper on Deck: Despite having previously fallen in love with Flash herself, by the end of "The Ocean Champion" she fully supports him and Twilight getting together, since she realizes that Twilight knows more about him than her and is better for him. While hugging them both goodbye, she whispers to Twilight "He's all yours".
  • Took a Level in Cheerfulness: She becomes much happier after Flash befriends her, and even more so when she discovers her sisters are alive after all.

    Professor Cadance
Shining Armor's wife and Twilight Sparkle's sister-in-law.
  • The Ghost: She is briefly mentioned in "The Equestrian Champion", when a fan of Shining Armor's says that he is married. She finally makes a physical appearance briefly in "Team Shadow Strikes Part 3".
  • Logical Latecomer: She temporarily joins the group for several chapters, and despite having had her own journeys previously and has an understanding of Pokémon, the bonds they form with their trainers, and the statistics of matchups, she also knows the least about Flash or his accomplishments. She is surprised to see Flash and Springer are so close that he can understand what Springer says, and when she tries to talk Flash out of stubbornly insisting Astro will be able to beat Sugarcoat's Morgrem in a rematch, seeing it as an impossible matchup due to Astro's disadvantage, she finds herself without any support when everyone else, including Twilight, agrees with Flash.
  • "The Reason You Suck" Speech: When she runs into Lightning Blitz, he tells her to warn Shining Armor he is coming to dethrone him and make him pay for the disgrace he brought to his family, Cadance just laughs at him for thinking he can beat Shining, and tells him not only can he not beat a single one of Shining's Pokémon, but Flash Sentry, who Lightning views as nothing but a loser, stands the best chance of beating Shining out of anyone she has ever met.
Cadance: Do what you want. But be warned. As you are now, you could defeat a thousand trainers, but still not beat a single one of Shining's Pokémon. I've seen a lot of trainers who want to take Shining's title from him, but none of them have what it takes to surpass him. At least... that's what I thought.
Lightning: Oh? What do you mean by that?
Cadance: Let's just say... I think I found someone who could take him on.
Lightning: If it's not me, then you're just delusional.
Cadance: I wouldn't say that. After all, you're about to face off against him in a few minutes.
  • Worthy Opponent: She says she has met plenty of hotshot trainers that want to beat her husband Shining Armor and take his title from him, but none have what it takes to surpass him. However, she claims out of all of them, she believes Flash Sentry has the best chance of taking him on.

Gym Leaders

    Time Turner
See entry under "Traveling Companions".

    Thorax
The Gym Leader of Fillydelphia City, who specializes in Bug-Types.
  • Graceful Loser: When he's beaten by Flash in a rematch, Thorax takes it very well and tells Flash that he'd be open for another battle.
  • Red Oni, Blue Oni: Thoax is the blue oni to Pharynx's red oni, as Thorax is generally more reasonable and level-headed than his more irritable brother.
  • Wake-Up Call Boss: He delivers a Curb-Stomp Battle to Flash in their first match, showing that he needs to start taking his training more seriously and plan ahead before his battles, instead of improvising every single thing he does.

    Maud Pie
The Gym Leader of Baltimare City, who specializes in Rock-Types.
  • Early-Bird Cameo: Though unnamed and unseen, she takes part in a meeting between the various Gym Leaders in Equestria at the beginning of "Flames of Victory". She is identified by her monotone voice.
  • Lethal Joke Character: She knows that many people consider Rock types to be the weakest of the eighteen Pokémon types due to having many weakness, and so they often find the Rock type gym as an early target. She started her gym to prove that Rock types aren't weak, and feels she has succeeded in this goal, since many trainers who have showed up expecting an easy win have run away in tears.

    Granny Smith
The Gym Leader of Applewood City, who specializes in Grass-Types.
  • Cool Old Lady: She's not only a Gym Leader, but she's also a really pleasant person in general.
  • Early-Bird Cameo: Though unnamed and unseen, she takes part in a meeting between the various Gym Leaders in Equestria at the beginning of "Flames of Victory". She is identified by her elderly voice and use of the term "saplings".
  • Graceful Loser: Despite losing to Flash Sentry, Granny takes it incredibly well, gives him the Harvest Badge as a reward, and gives him some last words of encouragement.
  • Never Mess with Granny: Granny Smith is a skilled Pokémon trainer who is far cooler than what her old age would imply.

    Braeburn
The Gym Leader of Appaloosa City, who specializes in Ground-Types.
  • Dishing Out Dirt: He specializes in Ground-Types.
  • Graceful Loser: Even after losing, Braeburn thanks Flash for giving him such an exciting match, even commenting that he doesn't even care about the outcome.
  • Nice Guy: Even as Thunderhooves voices his distate towards him, Braeburn remains nothing but friendly to him and even saves him from a stampede of Stampalo.

    Spitfire
The Gym Leader of Cloudsdale City, who specializes in Flying-Types.
  • Adaptation Origin Connection: Spitfire was present when Rainbow caught Tank here, even giving her a Pokeball to catch him upon realizing he wants to stay with her.
  • Always Someone Better: She has her own Flitanium, one that's even stronger than Doc's.
  • The Apprentice: She is the former protégé to Cloud Clipper, and took her place as the Cloudsdale Gym Leader.
  • Blow You Away: She specializes in Flying-Types.
  • Final Boss: She invokes this with Rainbow Dash. After she defeats Rainbow, she tells for her to collect the other seven badges first before challenging her again, because she wants to be Rainbow's last obstacle to overcome before the league, instead of just being her sixth badge.
  • Mirror Match: During her Gym Battle with Rainbow Dash, they both use their Wonders in one battle against each other. Spitfire's easily wins due to having more experience.
  • The Worf Effect: She defeats Rainbow Dash, one of Flash's toughest rivals, in a Gym Battle 3-1.

    Tidal Wave
The Gym Leader of Manehatten City, who specializes in Water-Types.
  • Hero of Another Story: He sets out to put an end to the Pokémon trafficking ring, to make sure nobody can fill the void Dreadbeard left. He is back by the end of "Coordinating a Grand Display".
  • One-Hit Kill: His Reefincer knows Guillotine.
  • Stone Wall: His Piercish is very tough to damage. It can increase its defense with Iron Defense and slowly heal any damage it does take with Aqua Ring.
  • You Are in Command Now: When he leaves to put an end to the Pokémon trafficking ring, he says he can't leave Manehatten unprotected, trusting Flash to look after it while he is gone.
  • You Remind Me of X: He says Flash reminds him of himself, and that Flash is also like a certain someone else too, not explaining that that someone is Shining Armor.

    Ember
The Gym Leader of Dragonia City, who specializes in Dragon-Types.
  • Full-Body Disguise: She wears armor to hide her identity from her father so she can enter The Gauntlet of Fire. She also disguises her Champagoon, painting it green and putting its Pokeball in a Contest Ball Capsule to make it appear to be a Shiny.
  • Hoist by His Own Petard: After Astro evolves in the climax of her Gym Battle with Flash, he becomes an Instant Expert at flying due to having watched the way her Galvern flies and copying it, allowing him to keep up with her Champagoon.
  • I Am Not Left-Handed: Despite inheriting all of the Pokémon Torch left in the Gym when she became Gym Leader, she chooses to use the Pokémon she trained herself for her Gym Battle with Flash.
  • Offered the Crown: After Spike wins the Gauntlet of Fire, he gives her the Sceptre Badge, the proof of victory, effectively passing the title of Gym Leader to her.
  • The Promise: After Spike makes her the Gym Leader, she asks him for a favor. That one day when he is finally old enough to be a trainer and he goes on his own journey, that he will come back and challenge her to a battle.

Equestria League

    Shining Armor
The current champion of the Equestria Region, and Twilight Sparkle's big brother.
  • The Ace: Comes with the territory of being the champion. He demonstrates his skills when Flash faces him in a five on five match, and wins using only a single Pokémon.
  • Big Good: As champion it is his duty to protect Equestria from any potential threats, like Team Shadow, and is someone that Flash aspires to be like.
  • Final Boss: He serves as this as the champion of the Equestria Region, similar to the champions of the other regions in each game. Whoever wins the Equestria League tournament earns the right to face him in a full battle for a chance to earn the title of champion themselves. He serves as this for Flash after Flash wins the League, being the last opponent Flash faces on his journey. Their battle ultimately ends in Flash's victory, taking the championship title from Shining.
  • Forgotten First Meeting: He and Flash first met each other years ago. He was the one who caught Springer, then gave him to Flash when he saw how close the two had become. Flash never realized it was him because he never learned his name, but Shining remembers him perfectly and reminds him of their first meeting.
  • Hoist by His Own Petard: Shining was the trainer that originally caught Springer when he was first on his journey, but gave him to Flash after he saw how close the two had already become. Six years later, Flash faces Shining for the championship title, and defeats him with the very same Pokémon he left with him.
  • Insult of Endearment: Cadance explains that when Shining calls someone a "loser" it just means they are someone who hates to lose. Thus, him saying that Flash is "just as big a loser as he was at his age" is actually a big complement.
  • The Mentor: He briefly acts as one to Flash in "Shrieking a Difficult Lesson", where he points out how Springer is a weak link in his team by only having Fighting and Normal attacks, making him powerless against Ghost types.

    Grand Hoof
The former champion of the Equestria Region before losing his title to Shining Armor, and Lightning Blitz's grandfather.
  • Bare-Fisted Monk: His only known Pokémon is Hariyama, but it is for all intents is ace.
  • Cool Old Guy: He is nothing but nice to Flash and his friends, and is willing to lend a hand whenever he is able to.
  • Graceful Loser: He was not upset at all at losing his championship title to Shining Armor and smiled happily at the outcome since handing over his title and duties meant he could spend more time with his family.
  • It's All My Fault: He blames himself for the way his grandson Lightning turned out, and everyone Lightning hurts because of it.
    • He apologizes to Flash, saying it is his own fault that Flash lost to Lightning in the Hoofington Battle Tournament, because he confronted Lightning before the battle trying to change the path he was going down, which only ended up making Lightning's attitude worse.
    • He also says it wasn't right of him to make Flash promise him he would defeat Lightning one day, since they had only just met and it put way too much pressure on him, and that it should have been his own responsibility to put Lightning on the right path long ago by disciplining him properly.
  • My God, What Have I Done?: When he learns from Twilight what Flash went through after his loss against Lightning in the Hoofington Battle Tournament and how Flash seems to be avoiding him now because of it, he blames himself for it due to putting too much pressure on him.
  • My Greatest Failure: He feels responsible for the way his grandson Lightning Blitz has become. Ever since he lost his championship title to Shining Armor, a darkness grew inside of Lightning that he didn't realize until it was too late, believing he should have disciplined Lightning properly a long time ago to stop him from going down his current path and hurting himself and everyone around him. By the time Lightning enters the Equestria League, Grand sees him as being Beyond Redemption, and tells him he is done reaching out to help him, saying that Lightning is just going to have to come to him when he is ready to move on from the past and change for the better.
  • Retired Badass: He might have lost his title to Shining Armor, but he shows he's still got it.

    Present Mic
A very loud commentator that shows up for various tournaments and competitions, including the Equestria League.
  • Catchphrase: Unlike how most referees in the series will declare a Pokémon is "unable to battle", he will declare they are "KO'd".
  • Combat Commentator: This is his whole schtick, showing up for most competitions to provide commentary. Though others like Celestia, Luna, or Grand will also guest-commentate with him at times.
  • Expy: He has the same name, design, and personality as Present Mic from My Hero Academia.
  • Large Ham: He shouts most of his lines and speaks dramatically about whatever is happening.
  • No Indoor Voice: He yells most of his lines at full volume, which also contributes to his Large Ham personality.

Significant Pokémon

Legendary Pokémon

    Alicormony
The legendary Pokémon who created all of existence.
  • God: It created the very world of Pokémon, opposed to its more destructive counterpart, Dischaos.

    Dischaos
The legendary Pokémon opposed to Alicormony.
  • Arch-Enemy: It has battled Alicormony every few thousand years and continues to menace all that it has created.
  • God of Evil: It is known as the "beast of destruction" who opposed Alicormony.
  • Informed Flaw: Despite being known as the "beast of destruction", it isn't seen doing anything evil during any of its appearances. It has even willing worked with Alicormony, its Arch-Enemy, several times to protect the world from greater threats like Centirek and Sombra.

    Heralds of Alicormony
A trio of Pokémon created by Alicormony; Horsearth, Pegasoar, and Mysticorn.
  • Badass in Distress: They tried to stop Team Shadow from completing their plans when they realized things were going too far, but ended up being captured in their Energy Traps. They eventually managed to escape by reaching out to each of their respective Chosen Ones and asking them to transfer some of their energy to them, giving them the power to break free.
  • Big Good: Collectively, they have fought against Dischaos and other threats to the world, until Alicormony is ready to eliminate them for good.
  • The Chooser of the One: In times when a great crisis looms, the three of them seek out others to eventually help them protect the world. Once they have made a decision on who is worthy to help them, they show themselves to that person. Pegasoar showed himself to Flash when he was on his way to Professor Celestia's lab in the first chapter, Horsearth showed himself to Doc after the first round of The Hoof Cup, and Mysticorn showed herself to Twilight after the first round of The Hoofington Battle Tournament.
  • Expy: They are essentially an earth pony, pegasus, and unicorn as Pokémon.
  • My Master, Right or Wrong: Sombra implies that they follow this and plans to use it against them. He gloats to them that they are sworn to follow any command Alicormony gives them, so once he has control over Alicormony himself, the three of them will have no choice but to accept him as their new lord and master. Luckily he never gets the chance to test if his theory is right.

    Eclixie

    Sirenity

    Centirek
An evil Legendary Pokémon from the ancient past, with the power to steal power from other Pokémon to increase its own strength.
  • Achilles' Heel: Lightning Blitz realizes that his forehead is his weak point, since every time he attacks his forehead flashes for a moment, being the area where he stores all his stolen power.
  • Adaptational Badass: Tirek was no pushover in Friendship is Magic by any means, but it was shown that when he absorbed magic from others, he was ultimately just using it to increase his own strength and not able to use their actual abilities for himself. Here, Centirek initially still only steals power from others to increase his own strength, but after he has taken the time to synchronize with his stolen energy he can use all the different types of attacks himself.
  • Beyond the Impossible: Played for Horror; Cozy Glow tries to catch him with a Master Ball, a Pokeball that is famous for having a 100% guarantee catch rate no matter what the target is. Despite this though, he somehow manages to breakout from inside the ball before he can be officially caught.
  • Big Bad: Despite not showing up in person until halfway through the story, he serves as the main antagonist of Rival and Darkness. After Cozy Glow frees him, he quickly usurps her as the main threat and goes on a rampage through Horizon City.
  • Death Glare: He gives one to Cozy Glow when she declares that she is the one who freed him, and therefore he must serve her from now on.
  • Dragon-in-Chief: This is essentially what Cozy planned for him to be for her. She planned to catch him and use his power to become the strongest trainer in the world and eventually the Empress of Equestria. Ultimately though she never even got that far, since Centirek refused to serve her and managed to escape from her attempt to capture him.
  • Early-Bird Cameo: It appears in stain glass window along with several other Legendary Pokémon in "The Crystal Empire".
  • Evil Is Not a Toy: Cozy Glow thought that controlling him would be easy, with her entire plan revolving around catching him in a Master Ball and using him to conquer Equestria. However, Centirek shows she massively underestimated his power, with him breaking free from her Master Ball and proceeding to go on a rampage to increase his own power.
  • Expy: He is basically Lord Tirek as a Pokémon.
  • Foreshadowing: It makes an Early-Bird Cameo in "The Crystal Empire", with it having a depiction in stain glass window along with the various other Legendaries. It is notably the only one that Flash and his friends hadn't encountered yet, setting up for its eventually appearance in Rival and Darkness.
  • Suddenly Speaking: Like most other Legendary Pokémon throughout the franchise (especially in the movies) he gains the ability to speak. But unlike most examples where he does this himself through telepathy, this is only accomplished because Flash Sentry and Lightning Blitz successfully use the Poké-Arms System to fuse with Springer and Gorillamp respectively, which translates what Centirek is saying to them as a side effect.
  • Taken for Granite: When it was defeated by Alicormony and Dischaos in the past, they sealed it away in a statue. It breaks free of its stone prison when Cozy Glow revives it, but is later resealed upon being defeated again.

Other Pokémon

    Pack Leader
The Lucario that acted as the leader for Springer's old pack.
  • Arch-Enemy: He serves as this for Springer, since it is his fault that Springer was exposed to Everstone energy and therefore can't evolve.
  • Bad Boss: Basically the only one he is looking out for as leader is himself, and making sure nothing threatens his rule. This isn't obvious at first since all the Riolu in the pack seem happy when Flash first sees them, but then he shows his true colors when he realizes Springer is strong enough that he could take leadership from him if he evolved, and lured him away from the pack to dispose of him and make sure he can never evolve. Six years later, it is revealed none of the Riolu in the pack have evolved yet, even though Flash notes they should have by now, with the implication being that the Lucario is deliberately keeping them from evolving. During his battle with Springer later, he also says that there have been other Riolu that could use Aura Sphere like Springer in the pack in the past, with the implications he did to them what he did to Springer.
  • The Bus Came Back: After previously only appearing during a flashback of how Flash met Springer in "Evolutionary Block", he makes a reappearance in "Springer's Destiny", when Springer reunites with his old pack.
  • Create Your Own Hero: As Springer himself said, he never wanted to be the leader of the pack himself, and Lucario just went after him because he got it in his head that he did.
  • Good Scars, Evil Scars: He is a very nasty Pokémon, and after he attacked Springer and the ten year-old Flash, he receives a scar across his left eye from Shining Armor's Squiron. This scar is also how Flash is able to recognize him years later.
  • Laser-Guided Karma: After what he did to Springer, kicking him out of the pack for being a potential threat to him and preventing him from evolving, he is eventually defeated by Springer years later and thrown out of the pack himself by all the other Riolu he abused.
  • Nice Job Fixing It, Villain: It is essentially thanks to his actions that Flash and Springer met and became partners.
  • Nothing Is Scarier: A brief bit of dialogue from him has some unsettling implications that aren't elaborated. He tells Springer during their battle that Springer isn't the first Riolu in the pack to learn Aura Sphere. This startles everyone else who hears it, especially when they see Lucario's grin is filled with bloodlust. Considering that he lured Springer into a trap to stop him from evolving because he learned this move, and it was implied that he was going to kill him before Flash and Shining saved him, it is likely the other Riolu he is referring to weren't as lucky.
  • Small Name, Big Ego: He boasts he is "the greatest Lucario that has ever lived".
  • Small Role, Big Impact: He initially only appeared in one chapter in Harmony and Chaos during a flashback, before eventually making one more appearance in Equestrian Champions, but it is thanks to his actions that Flash and Springer met and became best friends and partners. Essentially meaning the events of the series are thanks to him.
  • Walking Spoiler: It is almost impossible to discuss him without bringing up the important detail that he prevented Springer from being able to evolve.

    Scar
The leader of a gang of Scrapow in Ghastly Gorge.
  • Combat Pragmatist: During his battle with Springer he takes a few cheap shots at him. Though as Twilight says, this is justified due to him being a Dark-Type, which are known for their use of underhanded tactics.
  • Meaningful Name: The group subconsciously nicknames him "Scar" due to the scar he has over his left eye.
  • Small Role, Big Impact: His battle with Springer helps Springer learn the move Drain Punch.
  • Worthy Opponent: He and Springer eventually come to see each other as this, with both of them complementing each other in their battle before both collapse in a Double Knock Out.

    Titan and Mercy
The king of dragons and his mate, and the parents of Hopper.
  • Abdicate the Throne: At the end of Equestrian Adventures Titan officially steps down as king of the dragons and passes the title on to his son Hopper, since Hopper has officially completed his Rite of Passage by learning Wyvern Wing.
  • Gentle Giant: Titan towers over both Mercy and Hopper, but despite his intimidating appearance he is actually pretty nice. He welcomes his son back home just like his mate, and thanks Flash for keeping him safe.
  • Good Parents: They both love their son very much and are worried for him when he is stolen from them when he was just an egg. They both happily embrace him when he returns to the Dragon Kingdom, and immediately begin bonding with him, and Titan personally thanks Flash Sentry for taking care of his son for him and keeping him safe.
  • "I Can't Look!" Gesture: During Hopper's battle with Ryu's Noivern, when Hopper is slammed into the ground by Aerial Ace, Mercy covers her eyes with her wings to keep from watching anymore, not wanting to see her child in pain.
  • Missing Child: Their child was kidnapped from them before he even hatched from his egg, leaving them both heartbroken. They waited for months on any news of him or the thieves that stole him. Thankfully, they are eventually reunited with him safe and sound, but it is after he has reached his final evolution, essentially meaning he has grown-up without them.
  • The Nose Knows: When Mercy sees Hopper for the first time, she sniffs him briefly before tearing up and roaring in joy and embracing him in a hug. Apparently she recognized his scent from when he was an egg and confirmed he was indeed her missing child.
  • Rank Scales with Asskicking: Subverted; Titan demonstrates that there is more to being a king than just using violence. When he and his family come across a dispute between a Kingdra and Dragalge, Titan breaks the two of them up and listens to both sides of the story, before fixing the situation without needing to fight either of them. His trainer, Drayce, has also stated that the two of them have lost plenty of battles together, showing that just being king does not make him unbeatable.
  • Roaring Rampage of Revenge: After their egg is stolen from them, they nearly lead all of the dragons in the kingdom on an attack on the surface world to search for their child. Though thankfully, Titan's trainer Drayce is able to convince them not to do this and wait for them to search for their child themselves.
  • Walking Spoiler: It is impossible to discuss anything about them without explaining their relation to Hopper and by extension his Really Royalty Reveal.

    Princess
A shiny Skeidran in the Dragon Kingdom.
  • Expy: She acts as one for the Light Fury from How to Train Your Dragon: The Hidden World. They are both female dragons with a unique design that serve as a love interest for the main dragon of the hero. They both also eventually become mates to that dragon.
  • Fourth-Date Marriage: Hopper gains a crush on her as soon as he lays eyes on her, and she shows similar interest in him after noticing him. She teases him a bit by brushing her tail under his chin, and the two go on a secret date one night where Hopper impresses her by drawing a picture of her. After Princess sees Hopper's strength and good heart, she asks to become his mate with the Skeidran bonding pose, which Hopper accepts. Essentially meaning the two became married only a few days after first meeting.
  • The High Queen: Because she is Hopper's mate and he becomes the new king of the dragons, that technically makes Princess their new queen.
  • Not So Stoic: When she prepares to ask to become Hopper's mate via a mating pose she notably lacks all of her usual confidence and blushes when Hopper stares at her, which Hopper just finds cute.
  • Pink Means Feminine: As part of her shiny design, her eyes are pink instead of yellow.
  • Single Woman Seeks Good Man: Despite being a massive Dude Magnet, with every Hoppin, Velocirush, and Skeidran attempting to woo her since the day she hatched, she doesn't just pick one and get the others to leave her alone because she is searching for something more than just strength in each of her potential mates. She eventually finds what she is looking for in Hopper, when she sees that not only is he strong, he is is also kind hearted, merciful, and cares for his friends and family.
  • The Tease: She brushes her tail under Hopper's chin a few times, as her own way of flirting with him.

Antagonists

Team Shadow

    Sombra
The leader of Team Shadow.
  • Big Bad: He takes this role for the series as a whole, being the leader of Team Shadow, the main antagonistic force throughout the series.
  • Bitch in Sheep's Clothing: He seems like a friendly, if a bit aggressive, guy on the surface, with even Flash and his group liking him. But he is actually secretly the leader of Team Shadow, an evil mysterious group of criminals.
  • Broken Pedestal: He becomes this for a lot of people when he is revealed to be the founder and leader of Team Shadow. Before he was a respected businessman and entrepreneur, with the professors, Shining Armor, and Flash's group all considering him a friend of theirs. Once they learn who he really is though, they lose all respect for him and focus on taking him down. An entire army of trainers across Equestria later answer Flash's call to join him against Sombra.
  • Disc-One Final Boss: Despite being the leader of Team Shadow, the main antagonists of the series, he and his team are dealt with before the beginning of the Equestria League. This leaves Lightning Blitz as the final antagonist standing between Flash and victory.
  • Eldritch Transformation: During his Villainous Breakdown when his plans start falling apart around him, he grabs the Crystal Heart, only for it to suddenly start firing energy out of control, zapping Tyrandark, Alicormony, and Dischaos, and merging them all together with Sombra to transform them into a hideous gigantic monster, with Sombra the only one in control.
  • False Friend: He openly calls Flash's group, Shining Armor, and the professors his friends, all while he secretly plots behind their backs and leads Team Shadow right under their noses.
  • Faux Affably Evil: At first, despite being the leader of Team Shadow he isn't openly evil or malicious like most of its members, including his commanders Chrysalis and Doom Raizer. Instead, Sombra is able to appear much friendlier on the surface, and get on the good sides of Flash's group and the professors, even as he secretly plots against them. In private with his subordinates though, he shows his more sadistic side as he plots his conquest of Equestria, and indulges in some Evil Gloating. When his identity as Team Shadow's leader is exposed he suffers a breakdown and allows his true colors to be seen by everyone, openly mocking Flash and his Pokémon during their battle.
  • Hoist by His Own Petard: When he arrives at Mount Tartarus and sees the heralds of Alicormony captured, he indulges in some Evil Gloating, saying once he has control over their master they will have no choice but to obey his commands and accept him as their new lord and master. This comes back to bite him when the three Legendaries are able to contact their chosen ones, Flash, Twilight, and Doc, via telepathy and showed them the memory of Sombra gloating, revealing him as the leader of Team Shadow and allowing the three of them to pass on this info to Shining Armor and the professors. Thus ruining Sombra's status as a Villain with Good Publicity.
  • Meaningful Name: "Sombra" means "Shadow" in Spanish.
  • The Mole: Sombra manages to integrate himself in the inner circle of friends at the Crystal Empire, due to his status as a successful entrepreneur and businessman with no public connections to Team Shadow. He pretends to be just as against Team Shadow as everyone else and slowly gains their trust, while working against them from the shadows.
  • Nice Job Fixing It, Villain: As Flash himself lampshades, he has been struggling to find a reason to be strong, a question that has hung over his head since he first faced Thorax. But, after witnessing Sombra's and Team Shadow's actions, and hearing how selfish and destructive Sombra's dreams are compared to the dreams of others he has met on his journey, it finally helps Flash determine his reason for wanting to be strong. He wants to become strong so that only good dreams from kind people come true, and selfish dreams like Sombra's never come true.
  • Oh, Crap!: In "The Crystal Empire" he gets a silent one when everyone starts slowly piecing together what Team Shadow is up to, once they see the Heart Shard of the Crystal Heart in the empire, and he tries to subtly throw them off by saying this is all just speculation with no real proof. It happens again in the next chapter when Twilight realizes someone had to place a device on Androrg to upload a virus that messed with the security list, with Sombra sweating slightly while maintaining the best Poker Face he can.
  • One-Winged Angel: When Sombra is backed into a corner, watching his plans ruined right as he was having a Near-Villain Victory, he loses his cool and grabs the Crystal Heart, only for it to unexpectedly go out of control in his hands. It shots energy that ends up zapping Tyrandark, Alicormony, and Dischaos, and fuses them all together with Sombra, into a monstrous titan, resembling a giant Crystal version of Tyrandark, with its arms taking the shape of the absorbed Legendaries, and Sombra the one in control of the new body. Sombra tries to use his new body to continue his goals and conquer Equestria, first trying to destroy the Shadow Spear so nothing can stand in his way. After an intense battle, where Flash calls in help from every trainer in Equestria, Flash uses the Shadow Spear to break the Crystal Heart, separating the titan back into its four original bodies and defeating Sombra once and for all.
  • Out-Gambitted: His entire plan at the Crystal Empire is ultimately thwarted due to Shining Armor and Cadance being one step ahead and hiding the Heart Fragment and Shadow Spear away so they were never in the cases at all, meaning the whole battle was just to buy time to get Androrg and the Guardroids under control to prevent future attacks. The only silver lining for Sombra is nobody realizes his connection to Team Shadow, allowing him to stay in their good graces.
  • Raised by Wolves: He reveals in "The Crystal Empire" that both of his parents died in a helicopter crash when he was just a baby while they were on a business trip. He survived the crash, and was found and taken in by a group of Absol. When he was twelve, a group of humans found him and the Absol, and his adoptive family urged him to go be with his own kind.
  • Social Darwinism: He believes in this concept. He references how humans were once powerless against the Pokémon in the world and lived in fear of them, but they invented Pokeballs to have the power to claim Pokémon as their own. Now he believes whoever has the most powerful Pokémon has the most control over the world and can determine how it is shaped. His plan as the leader of Team Shadow is to gain control over the Legendaries Alicormony and Dischaos, putting himself in full control of the world.
  • Villain with Good Publicity: Despite Team Shadow itself being known as a mysterious group of criminals and thieves, Sombra is known as a successful entrepreneur and businessman, with his status as the leader of Team Shadow unknown to the public. It is then subverted in "Gathering Shadows", when the heralds of Alicormony managed to telepathically inform Flash, Twilight, and Doc that Sombra is the leader of Team Shadow, and they manage to pass on this info to everyone else, exposing Sombra.
  • Villainous Breakdown: When his entire plan begins to crumble around him, with his forces slowly being defeated due to the unexpected arrival of Celestia, Luna, Shining Armor, and the Gym Leaders, and his own Tyrandark being defeated by Flash and Shining, he goes into a screaming fit that he is worthy of the Legendary Pokémon and that as long as he has the Crystal Heart he can always start over again. But as he grabs the Crystal Heart, something goes wrong with it and it transforms him into a gigantic monster by combining him with Tyrandark, Alicormony, and Dischaos. After he is defeated and turned back to normal, he and the rest of Team Shadow are arrested for their crimes and he continues his mad ravings, screaming that he will have his revenge and that nothing will stop him from achieving his dream.
  • Worthy Opponent: It is implied he feels this way towards Flash, or at the very least won't underestimate him. When Flash and Lightning's battle in the Hoofington Battle Tournament is broadcast, Chrysalis and Doom Raizer both openly say how they hope Flash loses, but Sombra tells them both to be quiet and he needs to watch, wanting to see how strong Flash has become.

    Chrysalis
One of the commanders in Team Shadow.
  • Big "NO!": She lets one out when she realizes that the cases she stole from the Crystal Empire don't have the Heart Fragment or the Shadow Spear like she thought, but a taunting message from Shining Armor.
  • Break the Haughty: Her arrogance goes out the window when she fails her mission in the Crystal Empire, with her cowering when she reports to Sombra afterwards.
  • Broken Pedestal: She is this for her sons Thorax and Pharynx. They both looked up to her and saw her as the most caring person in the world. But then she started to become more aggressive, humiliating the trainers that challenged her, eventually demanding they give her their Pokémon if they lost. This caused her sons to rebel against her, with Thorax defeating her and taking her place as Gym Leader.
  • Co-Dragons: Shares this with Doom Raizer, with both of them reporting directly to Sombra and often sharing scenes with him when not out on missions.
  • Evil Matriarch: She is this for Thorax and Pharynx. They were both disgusted when she started humiliating her opponents, but when she started demanding the trainers she beat give her their Pokémon Thorax defeated her and took over ownership of the Gym from her. Now she is a part of Team Shadow and is threatening all of Equestria.
  • Foe Romance Subtext:
    • During her attack on the Crystal Empire, Shining Armor chases after her and manages to corner her. She tells him that if he weren't already married she'd think he had a thing for her, causing him to briefly cringe at the implication. Later when she manages to escape from him by hoping onto a nearby Warp Tile, she mockingly waves goodbye to him and quickly laughs out "Later handsome!" to him.
    • During the battle over the cases in the Crystal Empire, Flash loses his grip on one of them and has it fly out of his hand, where Chrysalis catches it. She giggles and mockingly thanks Flash for how "thoughtful" this was, acting like she was receiving a special gift.

    Doom Raizer
One of the commanders in Team Shadow.
  • The Bad Guy Wins: Despite efforts from Shining Armor and Flash's group, he manages to successfully to the Heart Fragment from the Hidden Temple, allowing Team Shadow to continue with their plans as scheduled.
  • Co-Dragons: Shares this with Chrysalis, with both of them reporting directly to Sombra and often sharing scenes with him when not out on missions.
  • I Fight for the Strongest Side!: He joined Team Shadow after Sombra defeated him in a Pokémon cage battle, with Sombra offering him a chance to get even stronger.

Independent Antagonists

    Lightning Blitz
Flash Sentry's main rival throughout the series. He believes in a Might Makes Right mentality, and that there is no point in training weak Pokémon when you can just catch Pokémon that are already strong.
  • Arrogant Kung-Fu Guy: Although he is a legitimately strong trainer, he makes no attempt to hide how superior he feels he is to just about everyone around him, even his elders. He constantly mocks anyone he sees as "weak" and refuses to acknowledge any of their accomplishments, to the point he says he could have done what they did better.
  • Asshole Victim: While Cozy Glow is stealing energy from the Pokémon at the Pokémon Center, she ends up indirectly sabotaging Lightning Blitz, since his Pokémon end up not being healed from their battles, and limiting his options on which ones to use for the remainder of the Horizon Cup. She later confronts him directly after he wins his semi-final match and drains his remaining three Pokémon of their energy too. She only does this to ensure she has enough Infinity Energy to free Centirek, but it is still hard to feel bad for Lightning due to him being a jerkass and a constant annoyance to Flash and his friends, plus he has been jealous of Flash's new fame throughout all of Rival and Darkness.
  • The Bad Guy Wins: Though not an openly evil threat like Team Shadow, he still holds a very toxic view of Pokémon and is Flash Sentry's most antagonistic rival. Thus, any time he wins makes for a huge Downer Ending. The biggest example is definitely when he wins the Hoofington Battle Tournament, defeating three opponents who tried to gang up on him in a Battle Royal, Twilight in the semi-finals, and then Flash in the finals 6-3. This makes him more cocky than ever believing his views are correct, and leaves Flash in a Heroic BSoD.
  • The Battle Didn't Count: He claims after he loses to Flash in the Balance Battle Tournament that it didn't prove anything because it wasn't a "real battle", just a "stupid game".
  • Beyond Redemption: His grandfather Grand Hoof sees him as this by "The Grand Mountain Mystery", saying that Lightning is "lost to him now", and probably has been ever since he lost his title to Shining Armor. Grand comments he should have put him in his place long ago to stop him from getting to this point, but was too soft on him. When Grand confronts him during the Equestria League, he tells Lightning he knows he can't change him, no matter how much he might want to, and that he is done torturing himself by constantly reaching out to him just to be rejected, and basically disowns Lightning until he is ready to realize his way of doing things is wrong. After he loses to Flash in the finals and has his entire worldview shattered, he takes a huge slice of Humble Pie and finally realizes what Flash and Grand kept trying to tell him have had merit, and humbly asks Grand to help him train.
  • Break the Haughty: After having a full-blown Villainous Breakdown during his battle with Flash during the Equestria League finals, he has his entire worldview shattered when he ends up losing to Flash, and ends up mumbling how this wasn't supposed to happen and he was supposed to win and go on to beat Shining Armor.
  • Broken Pedestal: He idolized his grandfather Grand Hoof, the previous champion of Equestria, and thought he was the strongest trainer ever. But then six years ago, he saw Grand lose his title to Shining Armor, who Lightning viewed as just a nobody, and was shocked when Grand smiled after his defeat. This shattered Lightning's view of his grandfather completely, believing he had disgraced their family name.
  • The Chosen Wannabe: When he hears how Flash, Doc, and Twilight all had Legendary Pokémon show themselves to them, thus picking them as the ones to defend Equestria, he doesn't understand why they would choose three "losers" instead of the "strongest trainer in Equestria" to save it. He even goes so far as to declare that beating them will show the Legendaries they made a mistake picking them.
  • Entitled Bastard:
    • He acts like any powerful Pokémon he encounters automatically belongs to him, because since he is the "strongest trainer" only he deserves their power. This is especially clear during his time at Camp Everfree, when he demands Fluttershy and Gloriosa give him the powerful Pokémon they caught, under the belief they don't deserve to have them.
    • He acts like Shining Armor "stole" the championship title from his family when he defeated Grand Hoof, and now he acts like the title is his by right. He even boasts of how he will beat Shining and take back "what belongs to him".
    • When he hears how Flash, Doc, and Twilight were all chosen by Legendary Pokémon to help save Equestria. He believes if Equestria is in danger, then the Legendaries should have chosen the "strongest trainer" in the region to protect it, as in him. He never stops to consider why the Legendaries made this decision, simply calling them "idiots" and that defeating Flash, Doc, and Twilight will prove they made a mistake.
    • During his Villainous Breakdown in the Equestria League finals, when Riptide refuses to stay down against Gorillamp like he is "supposed to", he starts demanding that he be declared the winner before Riptide is officially declared unable to battle, insisting that the battle is over and that Riptide can't go on anymore due to "being a weakling", even starting to use threats before Flash finally tells him to just shut up. After he and Gorillamp are defeated, he begins whispering to himself how this wasn't "supposed" to go and he was "supposed" to win and beat Shining Armor because he is the "strongest".
  • Expy: He is one for Paul. Both of them are huge jerkasses to The Hero of the series, constantly talk down to everyone around them, have an Electric type as their main Pokémon, a Freudian Excuse for their poor behavior, and believe that training weak Pokémon is a waste of their time. One of the only things they don't have in common, is that Lightning has yet to release any of his Pokémon for failing to live up to his expectations or losing a battle.
  • Fatal Flaw: His absolute lack of teamwork. Although he already has a bad attitude, it is shown that when he and his Pokémon need to work with others they fail spectacularly, despite being strong individually. He views teamwork as something for weaklings to rely on because they can't accomplish anything themselves.
    • He ends up losing Camp Everfree's double battle competition because he refused to cooperate with Trixie on anything, causing her Wizentice to get knocked out and his Chimplug to get double-teamed.
    • In the Balance Battle Tournament, when three of his Pokémon need to battle together against three others, it is shown that his Pokémon have absolutely no teamwork together. Because he has not formed bonds with them they are all just strangers who happen to have the same trainer. This is opposed to Flash, who loves and respects all of his Pokémon like friends, and they have learned to work together and rely on each other. This results in Lightning finally losing to Flash for the first time.
  • Freudian Excuse: He witnessed his grandfather Grand Hoof lose his title to Shining Armor, who he viewed as a "nobody", and saw Grand was smiling after he lost. This enraged Lightning, not understanding how Grand could be happy that he lost everything, even believing that Grand might have lost on purpose since almost every Pokémon on his team he used was a new one. So now he is obsessed with being seen as the strongest trainer in Equestria to take back the title he believes was stolen from his family.
  • Green-Eyed Monster: He is clearly jealous of Flash throughout Rival and Darkness for his newfound fame, constantly shooting him dirty looks when he is approached by fans. He makes it clear he thinks Flash is unworthy of such fame despite his accomplishments and believes it will just be a 15 Minutes of Fame scenario.
  • Hated by All: Anyone who knows him quickly learns to despise him for his bad attitude and disrespect.
    • Flash and his friends all agree his Might Makes Right mentality and disdain for weak Pokémon is toxic to anyone who follows it, and in a setting where Defeat Means Friendship is normally in effect, Lightning noticeably earns no friends at all due to his Unsportsmanlike Gloating.
    • Even Celestia and Luna can't stand him, and need to force themselves to remain calm and professional around him without showing favoritism to anyone else, no matter how much they might want too.
    • Whenever Lightning enters a tournament, it is noticeable that he always gets the least amount of cheers from the crowd, with the cheers really going when he starts to lose. Even when he defeated Pinkie and Bloxx in the Hoof Cup, the crowd continued to cheer for them instead of Lightning, the winner of the match.
    • The only person who doesn't outright hate him is his grandfather, Grand Hoof, but even then he is not pleased by the path Lightning has gone down and outright says that he believes Lightning is Beyond Redemption by now.
  • Heel–Face Turn: Three years after his defeat against Flash, Lightning still has a rivalry with Flash and still hopes to defeat him and become the champion himself, but he now wants to make sure he does it "the right way", and he and his team are shown to be much more openly friendly.
  • Hidden Depths: He might be an asshole, but Rival and Darkness implies that he has a strong bond with his partner Pokémon Gorillamp that is on par with the bond between Flash and Springer, since they were the only two pairs that could successfully use the Poké-Arms. Though, this is zig-zagged, since Gorillamp has shown to be just as big of a jerk as Lightning at times, if not more so.
  • Humiliation Conga: He really goes through the ringer in the Camp Everfree arc, like karma finally caught up with him and collected all at once. He fails to capture any strong Pokémon like he hoped, he is constantly being told off and punished for his bad attitude, he gets blasted by a Gyarados after he bullied it as a Magikarp, he fails to win any of the activities he competes in, and he throws a huge tantrum when he and Trixie lose the double battle contest.
  • Hypocrite:
    • He claims once he defeats Flash in the Balance Battle Tournament it will prove to everyone once and for all he is better than him and Flash is just a loser, even saying once he wins he will never accept another challenge from Flash. Once Flash ends up defeating him though, he confronts Flash saying that it doesn't prove anything, because it was just a "stupid game" and not a "real battle". So basically it only counts if he is the winner.
    • He claims that overconfidence can be anyone's downfall, saying bragging and boasting is just begging to be beaten. When he is called out on this by Flash, saying that is exactly how he acts every single time they meet, Lightning says it doesn't count in his case because there is a difference between exaggerating and telling the truth.
  • Hypocrite Has a Point: Before the start of the League when Timber Spruce is boasting of how easily he obtained all his badges, and claims the League will be a cakewalk for him, Lightning calls him out on this Suicidal Overconfidence, saying that attitude is just begging for him to lose. Keep in mind this is coming from the guy who does practically nothing but boast about himself nonstop and acts like an Entitled Bastard, even bragging how he is going to win the League and nobody else even deserves to be there because they aren't "real trainers" like him. Everyone else calls him out on his hypocrisy, but he claims it's not overconfidence in his case since he is just telling the truth. To be fair though, he admits he made the mistake once before, and doesn't plan to again (even if his words imply otherwise). Flash later acknowledges that Lightning was at least right in that he can't afford to be overconfident.
  • Jerk with a Heart of Jerk: Every time he shows even a sign that he isn't entirely bad, like helping save Flash and his friends, he covers it up with an alternative motive, like saying he was trying to catch the Pokémon that was attacking them, or saying he didn't want to risk the league getting canceled because Doc got hurt. Then he doubles down on all his jerkass traits in his next appearance as if to make up for it.
  • Laser-Guided Karma: He constantly insults Flash and his team every single time they meet, calling him a loser and his team weak and worthless. So, after constantly acting like he is so much better than him, it is satisfying when Flash finally defeats him in the Equestria League, knocking him off his high horse and shattering his entire worldview that Might Makes Right. For bonus points, he has constantly mocked Riptide the most out of all of Flash's Pokémon, only for Riptide to be the one to ultimately seal his defeat in the League by defeating Gorillamp.
  • Never My Fault: After he and Trixie lose to Timber and Gloriosa, he blames Trixie entirely for the loss, even though he refused to cooperate with her at all during any of their battles, and his negligence got Trixie's Wizentice knocked out first, which lead to his Chimplug getting double-teamed by the two opposing Pokémon at once. Everyone else promptly calls him out on this, saying he is just being a Sore Loser, but he just storms out of camp, refusing to listen.
  • Pre-Final Boss: He serves as this for Flash, with the two of them facing off in the Equestria League finals. Flash defeating Lightning earns him the right to face Shining Armor for the title of Champion of Equestria.
  • The Rival: He is Flash Sentry's primary rival throughout the series, with both of them having conflicting views of a Pokémon's strength and how to bring it out.
  • Sore Loser: Any time he loses he does not react well.
    • When he lost to Doc in the Hoof Cup, he stormed out of the stadium in a huff, not even bothering to stay and watch the rest of the tournament.
    • When he and Trixie lose to Timber and Gloriosa in Camp Everfree's double battle competition, he blames Trixie entirely for the loss, even though he refused to cooperate with her in any of their battles. When he is called out on this by everyone else in camp, he just packs up his stuff and leaves camp early.
    • When he loses the Balance Battle Tournament to Flash Sentry, after he spent the whole time boasting how he will never beat him at anything and after he beats him he will never accept another challenge from him, he just doubles down on his attitude, stating that the battle didn't prove anything because it wasn't a "real battle" and still refuses to see him as a strong trainer.
    • This ends up being downplayed when he loses to Flash in the finals of the Equestria League. Though he is still completely shocked by this, and his first reaction is to mumble how this "wasn't supposed to happen" and how he was "supposed" to win and defeat Shining Armor, he is shown by the end of the day to realize that maybe everything Flash had been saying was right after all and ends up humbling asking Grand Hoof for training.
  • Team Killer: In the Balance Battle Tournament, he has his Gorillamp use Thunder to zap both Viper and his own Pitchawk, eliminating them both from the battle. He claims he knew Pitchawk was going to be eliminated anyway, so there was no point in keeping him in.
  • Token Good Teammate: Most of his Pokémon are shown to be just as big jerks as he is. The only exception to this is Frostoak, who was willing to work with Springer while they were separated from the rest of their respective teams.
  • Unsportsmanlike Gloating: It is undeniable that he is a strong trainer, but that doesn't give him the right to rub it in everyone's faces. This is what he does in every single appearance, mocking his opponents before and after their battles.
  • Villainous Breakdown: After putting up with Flash so many times, including dealing with jealousy over everyone praising him and calling him a hero, Lightning has one of these when he faces Flash in the finals of the League. He tries to keep calm during this, but as Flash slowly defeats more of his team, his composure slips more and more as he gets frustrated over it and how the battle isn't ending up being a Curb-Stomp Battle in his favor like he boasted it would. Finally, when Riptide, who he sees as the weakest Pokémon on Flash's team, won't stay down against Gorillamp, he starts loudly demanding that he be declared the winner. When Flash continues to talk down to him and taunt him, Lightning eventually declares that he is sick of Flash always getting in his way and that he will destroy him once and for all, shocking the entire audience watching. He burns himself out once Gorillamp is defeated, and can only whisper to himself how he was "supposed" to win in complete shock.

    Big Score, Rickashay, and Boulder
A Trio of criminals that Flash and the gang frequently encounter on their journey.
  • Expy: They are essentially like the Team Rocket trio from the anime, three criminals who frequently cause trouble for the heroes but are more of an annoyance than a legitimate threat most of the time.
  • Terrible Trio: A trio of criminals constantly causing trouble. Big Score acts as the leader with Rickashay and Boulder as his followers.
  • Villain Decay: When they first appeared they posed as a legitimate threat, due to Flash still being a rookie with very little experience and planning skills. All subsequent appearances for them have them acting as little more than an annoyance to everyone. Even when they Took a Level in Badass by evolving their Pokémon and becoming threats again, they are easily defeated by Flash's team.
  • The Worf Effect: They both demonstrate this and suffer from this a few times.
    • In their first appearance they easily defeat Flash and Twilight's Pokémon by ganging up on them, only to then be easily beaten by Doc.
    • In "The Pokérus Training Ground" they are shown to have evolved their Pokémon and they make quick work of both Twilight and Doc, only to get curb-stomped by Flash and his team to show how much stronger they have become from all their training.

    Timber Spruce
One of the co-directors of Camp Everfree and Gloriosa's younger brother. He serves as a thorn in Flash's side throughout camp, and a toxic influence on Twilight.
  • Arc Villain: Timber acts as the closest thing to a villain that the Camp Everfree arc has. Flash is constantly annoyed by his rude attitude to every Pokémon Flash tries to befriend at camp, and Timber acts as a toxic influence on Twilight, causing her to revert to her old way of thinking and nearly driving her and Flash apart, especially when Timber blatantly tries to steal her, and the rest of Flash's friends by extension, away from Flash.
  • The Bad Guy Wins: "The Summer of Adventure" ends with him and Politoad defeating Flash and Shuckle, despite Flash training all night with Shuckle to prove Timber wrong about it. To add further insult to injury, Celestia has Flash's cabin stripped of all but one pity point for staying up all night with Shuckle.
  • Big Bad Wannabe: He acts like he is a genius on Pokémon when he really just repeats basic stuff he knows without getting to know anything about them personally. After he leaves his camp to go on a badge quest and compete in the League, he boasts how easy getting them all was for him and claims he'll steamroll through the whole tournament easily. He doesn't even make it past the preliminaries, losing to Flash at the final battle to get in.
  • Bitch in Sheep's Clothing:
    • He acts like a cool and friendly guy and jokes around with Twilight, but he blatantly talks down to many Pokémon at camp, not bothering to see what their true potential is and mocking anyone who ends up getting "stuck" with them (i.e. Flash). He also attempts to steal Twilight from Flash, trying to get her to join him on his own journey after camp, not caring how much this would set Flash back or if he would end up traveling alone because of it. After Twilight rejects his offer, Timber becomes a lot more antagonistic to her and Flash, even openly insulting Flash at one point during their double battle.
    • This is also hinted at when Shine first hatches. Her official Pokedex entry states she can see into the hearts of others and hides away if she senses evil in them. While Shine instantly accepts Twilight and Flash, she is terrified of Timber.
    • When Timber later makes his return in Equestrian Champions to compete in the League, he initially acts friendly to everyone, even while he boasts that he is going to easily win the whole League. Later though, he tells Flash before they battle in the preliminaries that he was hoping he would get to beat Flash before getting into the League, showing his true colors.
  • Boisterous Weakling: He is effectively reduced to this during his battle with Flash to get into the League. Despite all his boasts of how easy it was to get his badges and how he planned to win the whole tournament no problem, he noticeably struggles through the whole battle. He only takes control when Springer falls asleep due to Breloom's Effect Spore, but as soon as he wakes back up he immediately takes back control of the battle and he and Flash manage to counter everything Timber tries to throw at them.
  • Combat Pragmatist: During his battle with Flash in the preliminaries of the Equestria League, Springer falls asleep due to Breloom's Effect Spore. Timber takes the moment to attack Springer while he is sleeping and can't fight back. Though it is technically an allowed tactic, most people watching are still shocked that Timber would go to such lengths, and Pinkie comments the battle is no fun now.
  • Foolish Sibling, Responsible Sibling: Timber is the foolish sibling to Gloriosa's responsible sibling. While Gloriosa focuses on Camp Everfree and making sure all the campers are treated fairly and remain safe, all Timber cares about is showing off what a "genius" he is. He eventually leaves the camp entirely to go on his own journey and compete in the League, leaving Gloriosa to look after the camp herself. Timber is also shown to be petty, where Gloriosa needs to literally drag him and force him to sit and watch the championship match between Flash and Shining Armor, since Timber is still bitter over being eliminated so early on, and three years later constantly swears revenge on Flash whenever he is mentioned, declaring he will beat Flash and prove he is "better than everyone".
  • Know-Nothing Know-It-All: He acts like he is an expert on Pokémon, but he really is just repeating the info he learned off their Pokedex entries. He views both Shuckle and Clauncher as being weak and lazy, but is shocked when they show how competent in battle they are, with Clauncher even curb-stomping a rampaging Gyarados.
  • Laser-Guided Karma: After all the shit Flash went through at camp because of Timber trying to make his life Hell, and trying to steal his friends from him, Timber gets this from Flash quite a bit.
    • After he mocks Flash's "bad luck" for getting stuck with several "weak" and "worthless" Pokémon at camp, Flash proves Timber doesn't know as much as he thinks he does about them, like writing a report about how Clauncher is the guardian of the lake after Timber dismissed it as lazy.
    • Twilight ultimately decides to stay with Flash instead of going with Timber after camp, with Timber showing clear resentment because of it, with Flash and Twilight commenting on it to themselves. He is later defeated by the two of them in a double battle as the last activity.
    • He returns for the Equestria League boasting of how easily he is going to win the whole thing, filled with over-confidence, and is later glad when he gets to battle Flash in the last battle before getting in, saying he was hoping he would get to beat him to get in. He is shown to be out-classed in most of the battle, only able to get in a few cheap shots, and ultimately loses. According to Flash, he didn't take his loss well.
  • Not Good with Rejection: On the last day of camp, Timber noticeably becomes a lot more hostile to Twilight and Flash after Twilight turns down his offer of traveling with him after camp.
  • Once Done, Never Forgotten: Three years after he lost to Flash in the League all he is really remembered for is how he lost to the new champion and his ace. When he tries to brag to a few kids at Camp Everfree how he competed in the League himself once, only for one of them to remember him and point out he didn't actually compete in the League because he lost in the qualifier to Flash, and notes how he "beat Timber like it was nothing".
  • Pyrrhic Victory: "Camp Town Races" has him just narrowly beating Flash in the race competition, but only because Flash stopped to save him from a fall. Also, Twilight ultimately decides to reject his offer of traveling with him and stay with Flash.
  • Sore Loser:
    • Implied. After he loses to Flash and Springer in the preliminaries of the Equestria League, Applejack guesses that Timber didn't take losing to Flash well, with Flash only nodding in agreement. Given his overconfidence beforehand that he would easily win the entire tournament with no difficulty, this would fit. This is played straight later when it is shown Timber is still angry about his loss days later, and Gloriosa needs to literally drag him to the TV to watch Flash's match with Shining Armor, and she and Breloom need to force him to sit on the couch and watch. He is even still upset three years later, with him getting upset whenever someone mentions Flash, and constantly vows he will beat him and prove he is better than everyone else.
    • Even before then he shows subtle signs of this back at Camp Everfree. When Twilight ultimately chooses to reject his offer to travel with him after camp and stay with Flash, Timber becomes a lot more hostile to the two of them, even openly insulting Flash at one point.
  • Tempting Fate: He boasts how the whole League is going to be a cakewalk for him, ignoring Lightning Blitz's warnings that over-confidence like that is just begging to be beaten before the tournament even starts. Timber also shows delight that he and Flash need to battle in the last match of the preliminaries, saying he was hoping to beat him before the tournament. Ultimately, both these instances come back to bite Timber hard when he loses the battle and is denied official entry into the Equestria League.
  • Villain Decay: He was the Arc Villain of the Camp Everfree arc in Equestrian Adventures, acting as a constant thorn in Flash's side, mocking him for his poor luck, and getting Twilight to act as an even bigger jerk to Flash than normal while subtly trying to steal her and the rest of his friends from him. But he shows that he is ultimately just a Small Name, Big Ego man, when he leaves the camp and is much less of a threat when he returns. He claims he easily won all his badges and is filled with over-confidence, claiming that the League will be a cakewalk for him, with him even showing pleasure that he gets to beat Flash to officially get into the tournament. But Flash and Springer are shown to be in control for most of the battle with Timber and Breloom only getting in blows when Springer falls asleep. Ultimately, Timber loses the battle and is denied the chance to officially participate in the League.
  • Wrong Genre Savvy: Timber acts like he is the Invincible Hero of the story, an expert in Pokémon and a battler that easily obtained all eight badges without losing a single Gym Battle. When he returns to compete in the Equestria League he hypes himself up as The Ace, the guy who will win the whole tournament and make it look easy. He doesn't realize that he isn't The Hero, Flash is, and he is that way because he learned to mature and grow on his journey and struggle to get there while overcoming everything in his way, instead of starting out as the best. Timber isn't even a supporting character in the story, he's a villain, and ultimately a minor one in the grand scheme of things.

    Cadmus
The eldest son of Drayce, the kai of the Dragon Kingdom. He planned to lead his kingdom against the surface world, refusing to hide away from it, but was banished for his insane plans. He swore to return one day, and now seeks what he believes is rightfully his, the prince of dragons.
  • The Exile: After he challenged his father for ownership of Titan and lost, and still refused to see the error of his insane plans, Drayce was forced to banish him, with his only two supporters Fafnir and Libelle joining him.
  • Foil: He serves as one to his younger brother Ryu. Both he and Ryu are well intentioned extremists who want what they feel is best for their people and as a result refuse to listen to anyone saying otherwise. But, while Ryu wants to stay hidden from the outside world, Cadmus doesn't want to live in fear of it and wants to conquer it. Also, they both want the prince of dragons, believing it is rightfully theirs and it was stolen from them. But while Ryu simply challenges Flash for the right to own it, Cadmus is willing to do whatever it takes, even threatening lives, for it. The biggest difference though is that while Ryu eventually realizes what he is doing and redeems himself, Cadmus refuses to change his ways, even after his defeat.
  • Hidden Villain: He doesn't physically appear until the final arc of Equestrian Adventures, but he has had a subtle influence that lasted almost the whole story. He was the one who hired the Pokémon hunters that stole Hopper's egg, which eventually led to Flash obtaining Hopper, and the group being brought to the Dragon Kingdom after they are finally found.

    Wingill
A rude and egotistical trainer that Flash and the others encounter at the Ocean Champion Tournament. He uses cheap tactics throughout the tournament and boasts of his "inevitable" victory.
  • Break the Haughty: After being completely insufferable through his entire appearance, fighting dirty and talking down to everyone over how he and Fin will win the tournament, he is beaten in the finals by Flash and Riptide, the ones he insulted more than anyone else. He grows more unhinged as the battle between them goes on, until Riptide eventually wins. He is so shocked by this he doesn't say a word afterwards.
  • Brilliant, but Lazy: He is clearly a smart trainer, managing to think of a clever (if a bit underhanded) strategy to easily win most of his battles in the Ocean Champion Tournament. But, he underestimates all of his opponents, especially Flash, and doesn't train at all due to believing his win is already guaranteed. This eventually leads to him and Fin losing to Flash and Riptide, even though Riptide has only been a Reptidal for a few days and is much less experienced than Fin.
  • Hate Sink: It is clear from the moment he first shows up that he is not someone we are supposed to like. He talks down to Flash and Riptide, calling them both weak and mocking them for their loss against Lightning Blitz and never stops boasting about how he is "guaranteed" to become the Ocean Champion. Plus he spends the entire tournament fighting dirty, something everyone calls him out on.
  • Hypocrite: He accuses Flash and Riptide of cheating during their battle, when Flash signals to Riptide to use Rock Smash by kicking, since Riptide couldn't hear the command at the time. This is coming from the guy who had been fighting dirty the whole tournament, using Ice Beam to freeze his opponents underwater until time ran out. Flash calls him out on this, saying Wingill is the one avoiding actually battling fairly.
  • Laser-Guided Karma: He is defeated by Flash and Riptide, who he constantly mocked and called weak ever since meeting them at the tournament, with them becoming Ocean Champions instead of him and Fin.
  • Pride Before a Fall: He spends his entire time talking down to everyone else at the tournament, only to end up losing in the finals to the pair he insulted the most. He is so gobsmacked by his defeat he can't say anything at all.
  • Sore Loser: After he loses to Flash and Riptide he simply sulks away without saying anything to them, not even apologizing. He is shown to still be bitter about this several weeks later, when he and Fin watch Flash's championship match with Shining Armor and both growl at the screen when Flash is introduced.

    Dreadbeard
The leader of a Pokémon trafficking organization, who captures multiple Pokémon by any means necessary just to sell them to the highest bidder. His actions attract the attention of the Manehatten City Gym Leader Tidal Wave.

"Movie" Antagonists

    Doctor Mechano

    Forest, Pyron, and Cecelia

    Guile

    Cozy Glow
A young girl that plans to revive the evil Legendary Centirek and make it her own.
  • Big Bad Wannabe: She is initially set up as the main antagonist of Rival and Darkness, with her stealing energy from various injured Pokémon so she can free Centirek and catch it, then she can use it to conquer Equestria. However, her plan to capture Centirek completely fails when it breaks out of her Master Ball and goes on a rampage as the true main threat, meaning all she did was release an uncontrollable monster on the world. Once it is defeated, she is easily captured and arrested by Officer Hard Case.
  • Kick the Dog: Right before her identity as the mysterious caped culprit is revealed to the readers, she uses her energy gun to zap and drain a wild Psychick of its energy, before revealing a barrage of other unconscious Pokémon behind her.
  • Little Girls Kick Shins: She kicks Sunburst in the leg to make him drop the container of Infinity Energy before she kicks it at the statue of Centirek to free it.
  • Oh, Crap!: When it seems like her plan to revive Centirek failed, she lets out a small chuckle and tries to excuse her actions by saying she is "Just a Kid who doesn't know any better".
  • Small Name, Big Ego: No matter how smart she is or who she is related to, she feels like she deserves a Legendary Pokémon. She also believes that is all it takes to become the strongest trainer, and that with it she will become the new champion, and eventually the Empress of Equestria.
  • Stating the Simple Solution: She calls Sombra an idiot for his complex plan of trapping Legendaries in energy cages since they are still Pokémon and thus can be caught in a Pokeball the same as any other. Unfortunately, this plan doesn't work out for her when she tries it herself.
  • This Cannot Be!: She screams "That's... that's impossible!" when Centirek manages to break free from the Master Ball she tried to catch it in. Though considering Master Balls are supposed to be inescapable, her reaction is pretty justified.
  • Walking Spoiler: It is impossible to talk about her role without revealing her role as an antagonist.
  • We Will Meet Again: As she is being arrested by Officer Hard Case and Sunburst and Starlight refuse to help her after she gives a fake apology, she swears she is going to make them pay and that someday she will be the strongest trainer in the world.

Minor Characters

Introduced in Harmony and Chaos

    Nurse Redheart

  • Expy: Nurse Redheart fulfills the same role as Nurse Joy from ''Franchise/{{Pokémon}}. She even has a Chansey to help manage her infirmary, just like Nurse Joy.

    Officer Hard Case

  • Jerkass Has a Point: Hard Case can be a bit too strict with the rules, but some of his logic makes sense, such as when he tells Twilight that he can't move Trixie's performance away from a library because she's already got a permit to do so.
  • You All Look Familiar: A Hard Case shows up in the first few chapters to contain a Champagoon, but another identical one shows up at Stratusburg Town, confusing Flash and Twilight. It turns out that Officer Hard Case's cousins are all identical cousins who serve in the police force. Flash and Spike Lampshade how weird this coincidence is.

    Jasmine

  • Ms. Exposition: Her second scene involves her explaining to Flash and Twilight why a Thawn named Prongs prevented them from catching a Pipple, informing them that Prongs believes that trainers are stealing Pokémon and interfering with their catches to save wild Pokémon.
  • Reasonable Authority Figure: Jasmine is willing to accept the aid provided by Flash and Twilight, while also forgiving Prongs for his interference in Pokémon catching.

    Shady Forest

  • Nice Guy: Even though his Instick is an incredibly inexperienced Pokémon, Shady nonetheless remains patient with it and helps improve its fighting prowess.
  • Throw the Dog a Bone: With the help of the protagonists, Shady Forest's Instick becomes a better fighter and in turn, his owner finally becomes a better Pokémon trainer.

    Ocellus

  • Adaptation Personality Change: Her love for nature and animals (Pokémon) are all original additions to her personality here.
  • Animal Lover: Naturally as a caretaker for them, Ocellus appreciates the Pokémon she watches after and even takes in Pokémon that have lost their homes to human interference in the environment.
  • Outdoorsy Gal: Ocellus doesn't mind working at the Fillydelphia Gardens, as she enjoys the outside heat anyway.

    Pharynx

  • Adaptational Nice Guy: While he still thinks that his brother is too soft, he's less mean-spirited to Thorax and even respects his skills as a Pokémon trainer.
  • Combat Referee: He serves this role in several battles, like the one between Flash and Thorax.
  • Red Oni, Blue Oni: Pharynx is the red oni to Thorax's blue oni, as he's far more short-tempered and aggressive than his brother, even occasionally berating him for being too soft at times.

    Lock and Salina Blue

  • Official Couple: Lock and Salina Blue are engaged in a romantic relationship with each other.
  • Reasonable Authority Figure: They enlist Flash and his friends to get rid of the Sharazor terrorizing their lake, in which they are very open to whatever solutions that the team suggests to them.

    Solid Stone

  • Elemental Punch: His Machamp knows three; Thunder Punch, Ice Punch, and Fire Punch. It can even use all three at the same time, in addition to Drain Punch.
  • Graceful Loser: After Flash defeats him in a Pokémon battle and proves that he has enough powerful Pokémon to cross Ghastly Gorge safely, Stone concedes the match, apologizes for being obstructive, and honors his agreement.
  • Grumpy Old Man: He's far older than most of the other characters and he gets frequently irritated whenever someone does something reckless.
  • Jerk with a Heart of Gold: He refuses to allow Flash and his team to cross Ghastly Gorge and disparages them for being reckless, but it is rooted in a concern that they may be killed there and when Flash does prove that he can safely pass, Stone gives them shelter in his shack for one night before bidding them farewell.
  • Jerkass Has a Point: While unnecessarily rude, he does make some valid points:
    • He tells Pinkie Pie that she shouldn't have used a Jigglypuff to fly over Ghastly Gorge because it acts as a natural wind tunnel that makes flying over it near impossible. Pinkie was just lucky that she was blown back into a tree instead.
    • Entering Ghastly Gorge is indeed dangerous, full of aggressive Pokémon and other hazards like sink holes, so it really is unwise to enter it, especially with a child like Spike.
  • Terrible Artist: He draws a map for everyone to get through Ghastly Gorge, but it stated to look like a drawing by a three year old. He also draws the potential dangers they could face, instead of simply writing a note for them.

    Cheese Sandwich

  • Bittersweet Ending: Although he and his Pokémon Bloxx split from each other, Cheese is nonetheless happy to see it be given to Pinkie instead, knowing that she'd have a better understanding and care for it. It also leans more into the "sweet" side, since Cheese was finally able to get Bloxx to smile and thus accomplish his goal in the first place.
  • I Want My Beloved to Be Happy: A platonic example. Cheese values Bloxx as one of his Pokémon, but he accepts that he'd be happier under Pinkie Pie, so he gives Bloxx to her.

    Spark Plug

  • Butt-Monkey: Spark Plug has been spending a week trying to catch an Abearab, which is much craftier than it seems and almost treats their chase like a game.
  • Pyrrhic Victory: As first, Spark Plug is disatisfied with catching an Abearab when it was drowning in a river, so he chooses to release it. Fortunately, the Abearab chooses to stay with him anyway.
  • Throw the Dog a Bone: After saving an Abearab from drowning by catching it with a Pokéball, it chooses to accept Spark as its master, which is even more special than just catching it because it shows that Abearab has come to respect its trainer.

    Fancy Pants

  • Beware the Nice Ones: Fancy Pants is usually a friendly person to everyone he meets, but if you threaten Coral Island, he won't hesitate to fight for its survival.
  • Hidden Depths: He has a Z-Ring and his Alolan Persian can do a powerful Z-Move. This implies he has gone on his own adventures himself and is a powerful battler.
  • Mr. Exposition: He provides a lot of exposition behind Coral Island's history, particularly about its origins and the natural environment that has thrived on it.
  • Official Couple: He is officially married to Fleur de Lis, who is nearly always seen by his side.

    Drizzle

  • Meaningful Name: Drizzle is a forest ranger who stops forest fires from breaking out, fitting her name's denotation of a light rain that would put out a fire.

    Cedar

  • Jerk with a Heart of Gold: He's a rebellious, moody teen, but he later apologizes for his earlier behavior to the protagonist and becomes significantly happier when he learns that he can become a Pokémon trainer instead of inheriting his parents' daycare.
  • Rebellious Spirit: Cedar is a rebellious teen who would rather play video games than help her parents run the Pokémon Daycare.

Introduced in Equestrian Adventure

    Zecora

  • All-Loving Hero: Her main profession is creating healing elixirs with the help of Acidron to help wounded Pokémon.
  • In Harmony with Nature: Zecora was never comfortable to live in a city, which is why she lives in a forest instead.

    Apple Bloom

  • Big Brother Worship: Apple Bloom, obviously, supporters her big sister Applejack during her Pokémon matches.

    Sweetie Belle

  • Squee: Sweetie Belle makes an earpiercing squeal of joy when she sees Springer, expressing how cute he is. She makes the same expression of joy when Rarity brings out her own Pokémon.

    Scootaloo

  • Out of Focus: In comparison to the rest of the CMC, Scootaloo is the least prominent of them in their appearance in Equestrian Adventures.

    Tomar

  • Non-Action Guy: Tomar is just a regular forest ranger who doesn't have any experience with training Pokémon, which is why he relies on Flash and his friends to deal with a Ferrothorn that keeps stealing from the other Pokémon in his sanctuary.

    Gloriosa Daisey
One of the co-directors of Camp Everfree and Timber's older sister.
  • Adaptational Heroism: She is never corrupted by magic here like she was in canon, and never went on a misguided rampage.
  • Cool Big Sister: When Timber tells her he wants to go on his own journey across Equestria and collect badges, she says he never needed her permission to leave.
  • Foolish Sibling, Responsible Sibling: Gloriosa is the "responsible sibling" to Timber's "foolish sibling". While Timber spends his entire time showing off and participating in activates at camp with the campers, Gloriosa is focused on making sure the campers are safe and treated fairly, such as sincerely thanking Flash for helping Shuckle and becoming its friend, and only punishing Lightning when he acts out and endangers others instead of his entire cabin. This dynamic is also shown in the finale, when Gloriosa rolls her eyes in annoyance when Timber swears he will beat Flash some day and prove he is better than everyone else when he is mad over some kids at camp raving about Flash being the champion and remembering his past adventures, including how he beat Timber, noting how he always says that whenever Flash is mentioned.
  • Reasonable Authority Figure: When Lightning starts causing trouble around camp, she puts her foot down with him. When it becomes clear that he doesn't care about the camp or the points given to the cabins, she punishes only him instead of taking points away from his entire cabin by forcing him to do dish-duty. Also, she actually thanks Flash for his efforts to befriend Shuckle, unlike Celestia, who punished him for staying up all night because of it.
  • Pet the Dog: After Flash spends the entirety of "The Summer of Adventure" as a Butt-Monkey, she is the only person to show him any sympathy or respect by sincerely thanking him for helping Shuckle and becoming its friend.

    Speed Demon

  • Cool Old Guy: He's a lot more cordial to Flash and his friends, in which he helps the former compete against Track Starr.
  • Retired Badass: Speed Demon is the reigning Shoot Race champion in Equestria, having won 50 races straight and keeping his record after Flash beats Track Starr's streak of 49.

    Track Starr
  • Broken Win/Loss Streak: He was stated to have won 49 Shoot Races back to back, being just 1 win away from matching Speed Demon's record and taking it from him. However, his streak comes up short when Flash and Hopper defeat him and his Manectric in the race.
  • Defeat Means Friendship: Like many minor antagonists throughout the Pokémon series, he starts out as a huge jerkass who talks down to Flash and Hopper, but once they beat him he gives them his full respect and tells them he wants to face them again next year.
  • Graceful Loser: As much as a jerk as he was throughout the chapter, he at least admits defeat when he loses to Flash, calling him a Worthy Opponent.
  • Jerk with a Heart of Gold: He's demeaning towards Flash and purposely waited for a Shoot Race so that Speed Demon can watch him break his record. However, he does take defeat well and genuinely congratulates Flash for his victory.

    Cherry Jubilee

  • Everyone Has Standards: While she wants to get rid of the Instick infestation threatening her cherry farm, Jubilee is disturbed by Sombra's proposal to forcefully drive them out of the land completely.
  • Trademark Favorite Food: As her name implies, she specializes in preparing cherry-related dishes, which she gives to Flash and his friends as payment for saving her farm from the Insticks and Scrapound.

    Strongheart

  • Like Father, Unlike Son: In contrast to her reactionary father, Strongheart appreciates Pokémon and is more affable to other ponies like Braeburn.
  • Ship Tease: She gets this with Braeburn, being the one to defend him from Thunderhooves' insults and assuring him that she'll never leave his side, even hugging his arm and placing her head on his shoulders.

    Thunderhooves

  • Evil Reactionary: While not evil, Thunderhooves is a lot more abrasive to Flash and his friends, regarding them with annoyance for seemingly trying to change his old culture.
  • Heel–Face Turn: After witnessing Braeburn save him from stampeding Stampalo, Thunderhooves eases his rudeness towards him and becomes more open to accepting change in his culture's evolution.

    Gilda

  • Blatant Lies: When Twilight asks why she is blocking off a public bridge just to pick a fight, Gilda brushes off that question, stating that the reason doesn't matter. Immediately after, Gallus reveals that Gilda is just angry about losing a gym battle and is training by fighting other random trainers.
  • Sore Loser: She did not take her defeat in a gym battle well, which is why she is eager to fight Flash's group to train for a rematch.
  • Throw the Dog a Bone: After losing to Rainbow Dash and left to sulk about her defeat, Rainbow offers her some last encouragement to not give up, which Gilda gracefully accepts.

    Gallus

  • Actually Pretty Funny: He laughs out loud when Rainbow Dash forces Gilda to face her in a rematch, or she'll prevent Gilda from facing anyone else.
  • Straight Man: He acts as this towards Gilda and tries to be her voice of reason, being generally uninterested in her antics and pointing out the flaw in her training strategy of essentially blocking a public route.

    Fleetfoot

  • Combat Referee: Fleetfoot acts as the announcer in the matches with Spitfire.

    Soarin Skies

  • Mr. Exposition: He provide the expository information about how the Great Cloudsdale Race works.
  • Ship Tease: He has this with Rainbow throughout "Cloudsdale Sky-Racers". They both form a quick friendship due to having a lot in common like growing up in Cloudsdale and their love for Flying types, end up tying in The Great Cloudsdale Race, and Rainbow noticeably gets red faced when saying goodbye to him. He later cheers for her during her battle against Lightning Blitz in the League, and in the "Where Are They Now?" Epilogue he basically takes her out on a date.

    Kaida

  • Mr. Exposition: Kaida explains the backstory behind the draconids and her home in the dragon kingdom.
  • Jerk with a Heart of Gold: While she was initially hostile to Flash and his friends after misinterpreting them as Hopper's kidnappers, she does ease up when the matter gets clarified and is more open to them than Ryu.

    Ryu

  • Don't You Dare Pity Me!: When he and his Noivern lose to Flash and Hopper, he is shocked when Hopper simply roars in Noivern's face when he has him pinned instead of finishing him off. When Flash says there was no point in causing Noivern anymore pain when it was clear they already won, Ryu angirly accuses Flash of turning Hopper into a pushover.
  • It's Personal: Part of his grudge against Flash is due to how he wound up being Hopper's trainer instead of him. Ryu was meant to be Hopper's trainer when he hatched, but due to his egg being stolen that didn't end up happening. Eventually, Ryu challenges Flash for the right to be Hopper's trainer, only to end up losing to Hopper himself.
  • Jerk with a Heart of Gold: After initially being the most openly hostile to Flash and disdaining him as an outsider, the two later reconcile when Ryu sees Flash help stop Cadmus.
  • Second Place Is for Losers: He has this mentality, and openly mocks Flash for coming in second place at the Hoofington Battle Tournament, despite having the prince of dragons on his team, trying to further argue how it makes Flash an unworthy trainer for Hopper. Drayce however argues otherwise.
Ryu: Second place is first loser.
  • Well-Intentioned Extremist: He despises outsiders in the Dragon kingdom and wants to keep its existence a secret, but only because he fears that the outside world will destroy his home.

    Drayce

  • Disappointed in You: He starts his "The Reason You Suck" Speech to his son Ryu by telling him he has brought shame to the draconids with his actions.
  • Reasonable Authority Figure: Even though the dragon kingdom is supposed to be forbidden to outsiders, Drayce still remains cordial with Flash's group and thanks him for supposedly bringing back the prince of the dragons, Hopper. He is also understanding when Flash is reluctant to leave Hopper there, despite how important he is to the kingdom, recognizing how hard it is for him to give up his friend.
  • "The Reason You Suck" Speech: He gives one to his son Ryu, after he has constantly been nothing but disrespectful to their guest, refused to see reason, ended up getting his Noivern hurt because of his grudge, and has been acting just like Cadmus.
Drace: Ryu, you have brought great shame to our people this day. You're letting what happened with Cadmus turn you into him.
Ryu: How can you say that?! I'm nothing like him!
Drace: Don't be so sure. You're trying to force what you think is best for everyone on them, just like he did. And you've refused to listen to reason every time, this time resulting in you getting beaten, and your Pokémon suffering! That is something us draconids should never do!
  • Technical Pacifist: Drayce is a pacifist who believes that the dragon kingdom should peacefully coexist with the rest of Equestria, but he does not hesitate to use force against Cadmus when he tries challenging him so that he can take over and begin conquering other lands.

Introduced in Equestrian Champions

    Swift Knuckles
  • Locked Out of the Loop: When he sees Flash in his Heroic BSoD and how he pushes his team for several days straight with little to no food or rest, he is shocked that the trainer he admired from the Hoof Cup and Hoofington Battle Tournament is acting so differently. This is because he doesn't fully understand Flash's rivalry with Lightning Blitz, or how much his loss against him at the Battle Tournament affected him.

    Terramar
  • Early-Bird Cameo: He makes a brief unnamed appearance at the end of Voice of the Ocean, sitting with his sister, Aunt Novo, and cousin Skystar in the VIP section for the Dazzlings' concert.

    Silverstream
  • Early-Bird Cameo: She makes a brief unnamed appearance at the end of Voice of the Ocean, sitting with her brother, Aunt Novo, and cousin Skystar in the VIP section for the Dazzlings' concert.

    Coco Pommel

    Acrobat Bliss

    Sugarcoat
A trainer that meets Flash's group, and antagonizes them with her blunt opinions about Astro.
  • Brutal Honesty: Just like in canon, she has no filter when stating her opinions and observations, no matter how harsh or hurtful they are.
  • Not So Stoic: She maintains a cool demeanor for most of her apperance, believing herself to be in complete control of her battles with Flash. But, when Flash and Astro take control of the rematch, and Morgrem seems to be on the verge of defeat, she losses her cool and starts screaming that this should be impossible.
  • Sore Loser: Zig-zagged and downplayed with her. After she loses to Flash and Astro in their rematch, she growls in anger and says that he might have beat her but reminds him she also beat him, so that means they are just tied now. When Flash offers if she wants another battle as a tie-breaker, she says no since she has places to be, but says she is going to work to get rid of her weakness and take them down the next time they run into each other, reasoning all she needs to do is get a strong Fairy move for Morgrem.
  • Take That!: She is essentially one towards players that only see Pokémon as a numbers and statistics game instead of just having fun.
  • This Cannot Be!: When Astro starts to gain the upperhand against Morgrem in their rematch, Sugarcoat starts screaming that this is impossible. After she loses she continues to say that a single day of training shouldn't have made Astro that strong, and that the typing and level difference should have made it impossible for them to win.

    Sandbar

    Tender Care

    Lady Purity Babbelon

    Double Diamond

    Yona

    Rutherford

    Garble

    Smolder

    Torch
The father of Ember, and former Gym Leader of Dragonia City.
  • The Ace: He was stated to be the strongest Gym Leader in all of Equestria. According to Cadance, it took Shining Armor three tries to finally beat him.
  • Boyfriend-Blocking Dad: According to Garble, he would have his Druddigon eat anyone who so much as looks at his daughter Ember too closely.
  • Didn't See That Coming: Despite all his experience as a Gym Leader, he is completly shocked when Astro evolves from a Starvern to a Galvern during his battle with Ember's Champagoon, saying he has never seen a Pokémon evolve during a Gym Battle before.
  • Early-Bird Cameo: Though unnamed and unseen, he takes part in a meeting between the various Gym Leaders in Equestria at the beginning of "Flames of Victory". He is identified by his gruff voice.
  • Retired Badass: He was known as the strongest Gym Leader in Equestria, but by the time Flash and his friends arrive, he has decided to retire and sets up a competition to choose his successor.
  • So Proud of You: He tells Ember even though she lost to Flash she put up an amazing fight against him, with it truly being worthy of being a Gym Battle.
  • The Unfought: Flash and his friends decided to head to Dragonia City to face him, since Flash heard from Cadance how he was the toughest Gym Leader in Equestria. Unfortunately, shortly after they finally arrived, Torch announced his retirement, and Ember became the new Gym Leader. Though Flash is disappointed he missed out on battling Torch he is happy to face Ember as her premiere battle.
