The Sanderson Sisters

    In General
https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/hocus_pocus_sanderson_sisters_hocus_pocus_2.jpg
The Sanderson Sisters as they appear in both films (Hocus Pocus 2 on the left, Hocus Pocus on the right). From left-to-right (on either half): Sarah, Winifred, and Mary.

The infamous witch sisters of Salem. Having practiced witchcraft since they were children, the Sandersons grew up to become a wicked band of sorceresses who devour children's souls to maintain their youth. While they were eventually caught and hanged for their crimes, they return to Salem 300 years later when Max lights the Black Flame Candle, unknowingly resurrecting them.

  • Ambiguously Evil: Whereas Winnie is wicked and scheming, Sarah and Mary are basically dumb and more or less harmless — until Sarah's Not So Harmless moment. It's unclear how well they comprehend the morality of their actions, and if Winnie weren't around to keep them motivated they probably wouldn't even be following an Evil Plan.
    • Averted in Hocus Pocus 2 where Mary herself is shown to be just as evil as her sisters, making it clear to children that, no matter if they worship the Sisters or not, she will still end up killing and cooking them.
  • Animal Motifs: Each sister has certain animalistic quirks... Sarah is a cat (in heat, given her boy-crazy nature), Mary is a dog (her ability to sniff children, loyalty to Winnie by constantly being at her side, and Verbal Tic where she barks at threats), and Winifred is a snake (her buck teeth and green outfit representing fangs and scales, she actually hisses several times, and she's perfectly willing to let her sisters die so long as she can get Dani's and later Max's life energy).
  • Anime Hair: Mary's hair is styled to look like a witch's hat and Winifred has hers teased up in a kind of afro/mini beehive. Sarah is the only one with normal-looking hair.
  • Alas, Poor Villain: Their deaths in the second movie (and third deaths overall) are played surprisingly poignantly.
  • Beauty, Brains, and Brawn: Sarah is the beauty (the most seductive), Winifred is the brains (the most rational), and Mary is the brawn (the muscle).
  • Blonde, Brunette, Redhead: Sarah is blonde, Mary has dark hair, and Winnie is a redhead.
  • Breakout Character: The trio are easily the most iconic and well-remembered aspect of the movie, thanks mainly to their actresses' hammy performances. Their popularity became so high that, since 2015, they have been the hosts of a Halloween show at the Disney Parks that includes other iconic Disney Villains such as Dr. Facilier and Maleficent. In fact, albeit in a recurring capacity, they are among the few characters to originate in a live-action film to be considered part of the Disney Villains franchise.
  • Bully Hunter: Happens when the three try to let the insult they just heard slide and just walk away but can't bring themselves to letting Ice and Jay insult them and decide to give the two what they deserve for making fun of them by leaving them in cages in their house.
  • Burn the Witch!: Averted in their 1693 execution, but played with and subverted later. In 1693, the witches are hanged, just like the real "witches" of Salem. (Of course, this is a rare case where the "victims" are truly guilty of witchcraft.) In the present day, the kids trick them into a walk-in kiln and burn them, figuring that's the way to get rid of a witch, but the candle's magic keeps them from perishing.
  • Card-Carrying Villain: Winnie Sanderson at one point says to her sisters "We are witches, we are evil!" But then, being that they got their powers by selling their souls to Satan, this probably just represents a realistic view of themselves.
  • Color-Coded for Your Convenience: Winifred's robes are green, Sarah's vary between dark blue and purple, and Mary's are red. Their death dusts match the colour of their respective robes.
  • Color Motifs: Red is an important color to all three of their designs. Mary and Sarah have red in their wardrobes while Winnie is an Evil Redhead.
  • Deal with the Devil: In the first film, the witches are believed to have made a pact with Satan to get their powers. They still call him "Master".
    • Averted in the sequel. The sisters do worship Satan, but they did not receive their powers from him. They were born with magic and it emerged on their sixteenth birthdays - as seen with Winifred in the film.
  • Even Evil Has Loved Ones: They’re a trio of sisters and they do care about each other. If one of them is in danger, the other sisters will be rushing to help her. They also all bow their heads respectfully when they reminisce about their Mother Witch.
  • Evil Is Hammy: In contrast to everyone else's more subdued performances, the Sanderson sisters and their actresses are certainly enjoying themselves.
  • Fish out of Temporal Water: They're three witches that have been dead since the 1600s. It takes them a while to adjust to being in the 90s. Sames goes for the 2020s in the sequel.
  • The Hecate Sisters: Sarah is the Maiden, Mary is the Mother, and Winnie is the Crone.
  • I'm a Humanitarian: Although it is not shown explicitly, the Sanderson sisters don't just absorb children's life force, they also eat them. Mary hungers after children throughout the film and refers to Dani as ‘shishka-baby’. Upon their return, the witches attempt to boil and eat Dani before Max intervenes.
    • Made even more explicit in Hocus Pocus 2 where the witches keep using the term "eat" when it comes to dealing with children - visibly in the sense of eating both their souls and bodies.
  • Joker Immunity: They were meant to be Killed Off for Real by the end of the first film, but their popularity with audiences led writers to come up with various loopholes and means to bring them back from the dead. In Hocus Pocus & The All-New Sequel, it's Poppy, Travis and Isabella using a spirit board that summons the witches' evil spirits. In Hocus Pocus 2, it's Gilbert creating a new black candle, which is lit by virgin Becca and Izzy on Halloween's full moon again. And The Stinger reveals that there's another unlit black candle in storage, ensuring that the Sanderson sisters will never truly die.
  • Large Ham: All three of the witches are. Winifred is unquestionably the biggest one.
  • Laughably Evil: The witches are surprisingly comedic considering the fact that they drain the life out of children, particularly Sarah.
  • Life Drinker: Their Evil Plan involves kidnapping children and reaping their souls, so that they could stay young and beautiful forever.
  • Nigh-Invulnerable: By virtue of being Not Quite Dead. The trio get roasted in a kiln but pretty casually walk it off.
  • Not Quite Dead: This becomes a running gag with them throughout the movie until the sun rises up and extinguish their limited lifespans. Even then, it only took two decades for someone to bring them back from the dead again.
  • Not-So-Harmless Villain: The Sandersons may seem comically bumbling about 80 percent of the time, but you'd be wise not to mess with them.
  • Rhymes on a Dime: Their deleted motto:
“Satan Loves us, this we know.
Because our mother told us so.
And when in trouble, be smart, ladies,
do not waste time, go straight to Hades.”
  • Terrible Trio: A trio of witch sisters who going around kidnapping (and killing) innocent children. They're probably one the most popular examples in any Halloween movie.
  • Together in Death: Winifred gives up her magic and allows Becca to kill her at the end of the sequel so she can be with her sisters again.
  • Vain Sorceress: The witch sisters are delighted to have become young and beautiful again in the prologue after draining life from a child. Winifred also flips out when she's called ugly.
  • Villain Song: Quite a few throughout the franchise. If you're gonna have Bette Midler as a witch, it'd be crazy not to let her sing.
    • The first (and most famous) one is "I Put a Spell on You" from the original film. With the power of Magic Music, Winnie and her sisters bewitch a crowd of partygoers to "dance until they die", keeping them occupied while they go after the kids.
The Sandersons: Ah say, into pi, alpha maybe upendi!
    • In the sequel, they are given two: "The Witches Are Back" - a cover of Elton John's "The Bitch is Back" - which they sing to celebrate their long-awaited return, and Blondie's "One Way or Another", where they enchant a crowd of people to hunt down Mayor Traske.
  • Vocal Evolution: Since the sequel was released nearly three decades after the original, it was inevitable that Midler, Parker, and Najimy's voices would lower with age. Midler's character voice has noticeably changed the most, as she speaks in a much deeper tone (which actually works in favor of Winnie's evil nature), in contrast to her much higher voice from the first film.
  • The Wonka: A villainous example. One ability of the Sanderson Sisters that was deleted from the first film is that they were able to make candy crows, which had the effect of dulling the senses of children and making them easier to fall victim to Sarah's song.
  • Ye Olde Butcherede Englishe: Speak like this due to having been dead since 1693.

    Winnie Sanderson

Winifred "Winnie" Sanderson

https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/d0c39f2e_a39a_40c2_ae14_676d7047c247.jpeg
"It's been three hundred years right down to the day. Now the witch is back, and there's Hell to pay!"

Played By: Bette Midler, Taylor Henderson (as a teenager)

Appearances: Hocus Pocus | Hocus Pocus 2

The oldest of the sisters. Scheming, vengeful, and dangerously powerful, she is undeniably the most wicked of the witches.

  • Actor Allusion: "Hello Salem! My name's Winifred, what's yours?" Bette Midler had previously starred in the 1993 film version of Gypsy.
  • All There in the Manual: According to cut dialogue from Allison, Winifred’s father was a warlock. This could explain her greater affinity for magic than the others.
    • Averted/retconned in Hocus Pocus 2. The sisters share one father, who was a mortal apothecary.
  • Alto Villainess: With the voice of Bette Midler backing her up.
  • Berserk Button: The minute someone calls Winifred "ugly" or a hag, she starts handing out the Disproportionate Retribution. A deleted scene regarding the dropped “candy crow” subplot has her replying “And you should’ve been drowned at birth” to a kid who calls her by that word.
  • Big Bad: Winnifred is the clear leader among the sisters.
  • Big Sister Bully: Constantly belittles and sometimes smacks Mary and Sarah when they irritate her.
Winifred: Why? Why was I cursed with such idiot sisters!?
  • Big Sister Instinct: Despite being a Big Sister Bully, Winifred gets a moment of this when she yanks Mary and Sarah after her to avoid the "burning rain of death". Even pushing them back behind her, as a bus approaches, as if to protect them from this loud, unknown monstrosity. As a young girl (by which time she'd been Promoted to Parent), she did exactly the same thing when the sisters were attacked by Mother Witch, pulling them to her and putting herself in front of them.
  • Bond Villain Stupidity: Downplayed for most of the movie. She genuinely cares about her sisters to keep them around, explaining the usual incompetent minions, and most other poor decision making on her part is due to culture shock from being dead for three hundred years. But there's no excuse for passing up the dozens of hypnotized, helpless children at her disposal and instead risking everything on trying to capture a single kid who's already escaped just because the girl called her ugly. She and her sisters only needed to feed on a single child before sunrise; going after Dani with a critical ticking clock was what eventually led to her downfall.
  • Deadpan Snarker: Has her moments.
  • Determinator: She will do anything to obtain ultimate power and eternal youth.
  • Died Happily Ever After: Not in the original, but at the end of the sequel, she's so desperate to be with Sarah and Mary again that she's perfectly fine with it when Becca reveals the reunion spell won't bring her sisters back, but rather, send Winifred to the afterlife with them. She even thanks Becca for it.
  • Dope Slap: She often gives Mary and Sarah one of these when their behavior becomes unbearably irritating.
  • Earn Your Happy Ending: At the end of the second movie, as a result of showing grief over losing her sisters at the cost of the Magicae Maxima spell, Winnie is pardoned by Becca after she is defeated for real, and she gets to peacefully Go into the Light with Mary and Sarah.
  • Evil Cannot Comprehend Good: Winnie can't understand self-sacrifice, even for a family member. As such, when Max drinks the potion meant for Dani, she is utterly astonished and baffled.
Winifred: What a fool, to give up thy life... for thy sister's.
    • Though, ironically, she finds herself in this exact position in the sequel, willingly trading her power so she can be with her sisters, realizing she truly is nothing without them.
  • Evil Is Petty: Dozens of helpless potential victims lumber mindlessly into the Sanderson sisters' clutches, but instead of taking advantage of the free meal, Winnie insists on going after Dani because the girl called her ugly.
  • Evil Redhead: Winifred the witch has red hair. She's also easily the most evil out of the three.
  • Expy:
  • Femme Fatalons: Has sharp fingernails.
  • Go Out with a Smile: In the sequel, since she knows she'll be Together in Death with Sarah and Mary.
  • Green and Mean: She wears shades of green that contrast nicely with her hair in the form of a richly embroidered velvet robe over a green and deep purple dress and also wear a dark green hooded cloak. Winifred is quite rude and cruel to others people including her own sisters.
  • Hair-Trigger Temper: Winnie sometimes throws tantrums when things don’t go her way.
  • Heel–Face Turn: In the sequel, Winifred accidentally sacrifices Sarah and Mary in order to gain stronger powers through a forbidden spell. When Winifred realizes her mistake, she painfully admits that her powers mean nothing without her sisters. Becca, the new protagonist and budding witch, takes pity on Winifred and undoes the spell allowing Winifred to be reunited with them. Grateful for Becca’s kindness, Winifred sincerely thanks her and praises the friendship between Becca and her companions telling them that they are lucky to have each other.
  • If I Can't Have You…: She killed Billy, whom she had a crush on, because he preferred her sister Sarah.
  • Irony: Despite mocking Max for giving up his life for Dani, she ultimately does the exact same thing for her sisters in the sequel.
  • Large Ham: By far the hammiest and most dramatic of the sisters.
  • My God, What Have I Done?: She has two moments in the sequel.
    • After forcing Book to reveal Magicae Maxima against its will, Book ends up going to Becca when she says it doesn't have to help Winnie. After Book goes to Becca, Winifred at first screams a Big "NO!" before looking utterly heartbroken.
    • Winifred is absolutely horrified and grief-stricken once she realizes that she has sacrificed her sisters’ lives to gain stronger magic in the second movie. Thankfully, this is reversed and she is soon reunited with them.
  • Not Good with Rejection: When Billy Butcherson did not return her affections, being instead in love with her sister Sarah, Winifred poisoned him.
  • Oh, Crap!: Once she realizes that dawn has come and that she’s quickly turning to stone, she looks quite scared and is unable to prevent the inevitable from happening.
  • Redemption Equals Death: Winifred finally gives up her magic powers and wicked ways, in exchange for her sisters’ lives. When it becomes clear that they won’t be revived, but rather she will be sent to the afterlife, Winifred accepts her fate and gives the new heroes her gratitude and blessing. It’s strongly hinted that the sisters were sent to Heaven for Winifred’s selfless deed rather than Hell.
  • Redhead In Green: Is the redhead in the trio of sisters and she's color-coded with green.
  • Shock and Awe: Can fire painful electrical blasts from her fingers.
  • Shut Up, Kirk!: Growls at Dani when she calls her the ugliest thing that has ever lived.
  • Stalker with a Crush: She developed an obsession with Billy when they were teenagers. This turned ugly when he rejected her in favour of Sarah.
  • Super-Strength: Max swings a baseball bat at her, and she catches it in her hand before yanking it away. She’s also able to lift up Max by his shirt twice as she tries to suck his life force.
  • Surrounded by Idiots: Mary and Sarah are nowhere near as intelligent as she is and she only keeps them around for their abilities, and familial love. This trope becomes part of her character development in the sequel.
  • Woman Scorned: Subverted. Many assumed that she poisoned her ex-boyfriend Billy because he had an affair with Sarah, when in reality, they were never a couple and she just did it because he preferred Sarah over her.

    Sarah Sanderson

Sarah Sanderson

https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/screenshot_2022_10_02_24146_pm.png
"Come, little children. I'll take thee away into a land of enchantment..."

Played By: Sarah Jessica Parker, Juju Journey Brener (as a child)

Appearances: Hocus Pocus | Hocus Pocus 2

The youngest of the sisters. She's quite spacey and childish, but her hypnotizing singing voice gives her a vital role in the sisters' hunt for children.

  • Alliterative Name: Sarah Sanderson.
  • All There in the Manual / Generation Xerox: According to cut dialogue from Allison, her father was the village idiot, which could explain her ditzy behavior.
    • As stated above, this is retconned in the sequel. The sisters share one father, who was a mortal apothecary.
  • Beware the Silly Ones: She skips along in a daze, "dancing idiotically" in the words of her elder sister, but her voice can lead children to their deaths. Allison lampshades this in a line that was cut from the film.
Allison: She would lure children — usually young boys — into the woods to play and they'd never be seen again.
  • Brainless Beauty: The youngest and most conventionally attractive of the witch sisters is none too bright. She'd rather "prance around idiotically" as Winfred would put it.
  • Compelling Voice: Her primary power - her song about halfway through the movie calls all the children in Salem to the Sanderson sisters' home. She also uses it at the beginning of the film to lure Emily Binx to the Sandersons' cottage, kicking off the plot.
    • Somewhat averted in the sequel. When Becca and Izzy convince the sisters that they can buy youth potions with children’s souls already mixed in, Sarah is crestfallen that she won’t be using her song. She states that she enjoyed the luring and it was her only task. However, she does get to use her Compelling Voice collectively with her sisters during the ‘One Way or Another’ performance.
  • The Ditz: Let’s just say Sarah contributes nothing in the ingenuity department to the Sanderson trio.
  • The Dog Bites Back: Attempted and defied, eventually becoming a Negated Moment of Awesome. After receiving a boost thanks to Magicae Maxima, Sarah and Mary discover they now have powers as strong as Winifred (and probably did the whole time if not for Winifred holding them back) and Sarah shocks Winifred.
    Winifred: I beg your pardon?!
Sarah: I am not a fool. I am a good and loyal sister, and I expect to be seen as such!
Mary: Ooh, she laid it down! She's a good and loyal sister and she-
Winifred: SHUT UP AND GET GOING!
Sarah: Of course Winnie with pleasure. Posthaste as is your pleasure!
    Mary: I apologize for her.
  • Dumbass Has a Point: Despite being the dumbest of the three, she makes a couple of good points in both movies that would've probably prevented all three of the sisters from dying again had Winifred listened to her.
    • By the end of the first movie, she reminds Winifred they can still feed either Ernie or Jay or one of the many kids coming to the cottage the remaining potion so they don't have to chase after Dani. Ignoring Sarah proves to be what gets all three of them sent back to Hell when the candle burns out.
    • In the sequel, she accurately notes that Book isn't comfortable revealing Magicae Maxima and doesn't want to help Winifred and Mary as they try to access it. Especially when it's shown the cost of the spell is Sarah and Mary dying.
    • She reminds Winifred that Billy Butcherson was her lover, not Winifred's.
  • Dumb Blonde: Sarah is the only blonde among the Sanderson sisters, and she's also the dumbest of the three.
  • Genki Girl: She gets giddy and excited about everything.
  • Hot Witch: Sarah is the most conventionally attractive of the Sanderson sisters, and her outfit emphasizes her breasts. Plenty of characters attempt to flirt with her throughout the film.
  • New Superpower: After she and her sisters partially cast a spell known as the Magicae Maxima, Sarah's power was increased enough to where she could project power from her very fingertips in a form that resembles purple lightning.
  • The Ophelia: Described as such by Mary Vogt, the film's costume designer, in the press kit:
Mary Vogt: Sarah was more like Shakespeare’s Ophelia, floating around, child-like, slightly mad. Her clothes are fluid, sexy and lighter. I looked at pictures of early 20th century dancers such as Agnes de Mille, Isadora Duncan and Ruth St. Denis to get an idea of how she might look.
  • Psychopathic Womanchild: Sarah is so childlike, it's very easy to forget she's homicidal and very dangerous, and her idea of "playing" with boys in cages involves light torture.
  • Too Kinky to Torture: When she's set to be hanged and has her hands bound with rope, she mentions it's "terribly uncomfortable" but her face suggests she's enjoying it.
  • Villain Song: "Come Little Children", a sinister lullaby that she sings to lure children to the Sanderson house.

    Mary Sanderson

Mary Sanderson

https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/screenshot_2022_10_02_24313_pm.png
"I smell children!"

Played By: Kathy Najimy, Nina Kitchen (as a teenager)

Appearances: Hocus Pocus | Hocus Pocus 2

The middle child of the sisters. While the most bumbling of the group, she's very much their voice of reason. She is also able to sniff out children with her hound-like sense of smell.

  • Animal Motifs: The animal itself is never mentioned, but Mary's appears to be a dog, what with her tendency to bark, her power to smell children, the way her mouth usually hangs open like a panting dog, and the way she's always at Winifred's side. Deleted dialogue from Allison reveals that her father was a bloodhound, which could explain a lot of things about this trope.
    • Partially averted in the sequel. The animal motif remains as Mary still barks, sniffs out children and stays close to Winifred. However, it’s revealed that the sisters actually shared one mortal apothecary father.
  • Beware the Silly Ones: She is not much further off. She may be bumbling and comical, but she is the tracker after all and is even implied to be most voracious of the three sisters.
    • Made even more explicit in Hocus Pocus 2, where she is clearly touched by a group of children dressing up like the sisters as "worship", but still makes it clear that it won't save them from being cooked and eaten. She especially plays it up when she stops Becca and Izzy from leaving, coming off as very threatening even as she doesn't drop her chummy demeanor.
  • Big Beautiful Woman: Despite her strange facial expressions and bumbling demeanor, she's still very pretty. Subverted in the sequel where she's shown to have lost a bit of weight.
  • Big Eater: Is clearly implied to be this with children. Her costume was designed with herbalists and kitchen witches in mind, as well as often mentioning child-based recipes. She is also implied to have eaten Elizabeth Podbury, Allison's ancestor, as evidenced by her deleted line: "Good to the last bite!"
  • Bitch in Sheep's Clothing: The May 1992 draft of the screenplay describes Mary as having "the outward manner of a sweet as sugar kindly aunt." In reality, she’s far from it.
  • Expy: She's basically Curly Howard of The Three Stooges right down to the barking at things that annoy her.
  • Faux Affably Evil: She'll casually threaten to eat or kill someone without ever dropping her goofy demeanor before laughing about it.
  • The Nose Knows: Mary can smell children from far away.
  • New Superpower: After she and her sisters partially cast a spell known as the Magicae Maxima, Mary's power was increased enough to where she could project power from her very fingertips in a form that resembles reddish lightning.
  • Oh, Crap!: "If I am not mistaken, sister, that bright object over there is the — (beat) — oh, oh."
  • Voice of Reason: She serves as one to the sisters by suggesting a ‘calming circle’ in both the original film and sequel.
  • Yes-Man: Always has an obsequious response to whatever Winnie says and kisses up to Winnie whenever she gets the opportunity. She does this by questioning or minimising Sarah’s contributions to their plans.

Heroes (1993)

    In General
Three adolescents living in 1990's Salem, who get wrapped up in a battle against the newly-resurrected Sanderson Sisters.
  • Badass Normal: The kids fight against witches and zombies without any kind of special power of their own.
  • Kid Hero: They're normal, suburban adolescents who are capable of fending off three dangerous witches using nothing but their wits and some trickery.

    Max Dennison

Max Dennison

"Oh come on, it's just a bunch of hocus pocus!"

Played By: Omri Katz

Appearances: Hocus Pocus

A teenage boy who unknowingly brings the witches back from the dead. He's not a fan of Halloween and thinks the idea of witchcraft is nothing more than "hocus pocus", but once he lights the Black Flame Candle as a joke, he soon gets one heck of a wake-up call.

  • All There in the Script: He’s fifteen.
  • Batter Up!: When defending Dani from the witches, Max uses his old baseball bat as his weapon.
  • Big Brother Instinct: He develops a protective attitude towards Dani over the course of the film. His biggest moments are him demanding the witches get their hands off his sister when they’re revived and him drinking Winifred’s potion when she has her sights on draining Dani’s life force.
  • Bratty Teenage Son: Is this in the beginning, but he gets over it.
  • Butt-Monkey: His virginity is repeatedly invoked and commented on.
  • Deadpan Snarker: He definitely has that typical 90's Kid Hero snark. It's best exemplified when he shares his thoughts on Halloween with the class.
Max: Everyone here knows that Halloween was invented by the candy companies. It's a conspiracy.
  • Distressed Dude: Zig-zagged. He does get attacked by the witches and either his sister or Allison protect him from getting killed by the witches. In the climax, he is vulnerable due to him drinking the potion that was intended for his sister. However, he chooses to fight back and make it difficult for Winnie to suck out his life force. He also receives additional help from Allison, Dani, and Billy as they yank on the extension cord for Mary’s vacuum cleaner and keep her from assisting Winnie.
  • Guile Hero: Max can't physically compete with the Sandersons' magic, so he's forced to rely on his wits. Fortunately, Max is very cunning and good at coming up with false identities and elaborate lies on the fly to help him misdirect and manipulate the sisters.
  • Heroic Sacrifice: Max interferes with the witches' plans in order to save Dani, drinking the potion that was meant for Dani and forcing Winifred to take him instead. He doesn't go down without a fight, however, and grapples with Winifred so she can't absorb his life. Unfortunately for the Sanderson sisters, and fortunately for Max, they are out of time, not helped by the fact that Winifred set foot on hallowed ground to get at Max, something that witches can't do.
  • New-Age Retro Hippie: Appears to be this at first, and gets treated this way by most of the other characters, and who can blame them? Max does wear a tie-dyed T-shirt and harbors radical left-wing beliefs (such as his suspicion that Halloween is actually a conspiracy on the part of the candy companies). He ultimately subverts the stereotype when he's offered a marijuana cigarette and he turns it down.
  • Nice Job Breaking It, Hero: Lights the enchanted candle to impress Allison, showing that he's not afraid of an old legend.
  • Skeptic No Longer: Initially makes jokes about the witches, and believes that Halloween itself is a candy company conspiracy. Then the witches show up, he is berated by a talking cat, and is then onboard with the "magic is real" message.
  • Tempting Fate: "Come on, it's just a bunch of hocus pocus."
  • Took a Level in Badass: At the beginning of the film, he has a hard time fending off two bullies, and is made fun of a lot. When the witches appear, he has the presence of mind to bluff long enough to get Dani out of the cottage. By the end of the movie, he drinks a life-draining potion to save Dani and grapples with Winifred in time for dawn to come.
  • Unexpected Virgin: Oddly enough, most people act like Max (at 16) is odd for being a virginnote , and tease him about it ceaselessly.
  • What the Hell, Hero?: Dani and Binx both call him out for lighting the candle, though at the end Binx thanks him since defeating the witches a second time allows him to die and move on to the afterlife.

    Dani Dennison

Dani Dennison

https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/screenshot_2022_10_02_23907_pm.png
"I love you, jerkface."

Played By: Thora Birch

Appearances: Hocus Pocus

Max's playful little sister, who goads him into taking her trick-or-treating.

  • Annoying Younger Sibling: She acts this way towards Max by mocking his attraction towards Allison and complaining when he refuses to take her trick-or-treating. She also mocks him for being a virgin whenever possible.
  • Big "NO!": She yells "Max, no!" when he lights the Black Flame Candle. She has every right to be terrified.
  • Big Sister Instinct: Inverted. When Winifred zaps Max with her lightning, she yells at her to leave him alone and smacks her with her trick-or-treat bag.
  • Bratty Half-Pint: Keeps mocking her brother for being a virgin. It's possible she just doesn't know what it means but she does still keep saying it to get a rise out of him. She also mocks her brother's attraction to Allison and to Allison's "yabbos" in particular.
  • Damsel in Distress: She ends up getting targeted by the witches three times in the movie. They first grab her when they reveal they intend to make her their first victim of the night, they abduct her later and try to force her to drink their freshly brewed potion, and Winnie threatens her life by either sucking out her life force or breaking her neck if Max didn’t give her the potion.
  • Defiant Captive: When captured by the witches. Dani tells Winifred directly that she's the ugliest person ever, and that she sold her soul so it doesn't matter how many children she sucks the life from.
  • Idiot Ball:
    • In the climax, Dani climbs out of the protected salt-circle (which is Billy's grave), to get his head back for him, which he probably would have done on his own eventually anyway, allowing Winifred to snatch her off the sacred ground. Somewhat justified due to her age.
    • Earlier, only an instant before wising up. Max has just tricked the sisters with "Daylight Savings Time" and rescued Dani.
Max: "Come on, Dani. Let's go!"
Dani: I wanna see her turn to dust!
    Dani notices the car's headlights.
Dani: "Pump it!" (Dashes to the car.)

    Allison Watts

Allison Watts

https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/screenshot_2022_10_02_23943_pm.png

Played By: Vinessa Shaw

Appearances: Hocus Pocus

A classmate of Max's. She takes the Dennison kids to the old Sanderson house, the site of her mother's (now defunct) museum about the witches.

  • All There in the Script: According to deleted dialogue from the Sanderson Sisters, her ancestor was Elizabeth Podbury, a good witch. This explains why she knows a lot of magic.
  • Combat Pragmatist: Allison is very good at picking up objects around her and using them as weapons, for example using a frying pan against Mary during their first meeting.
  • Nice Job Breaking It, Hero: Hoping to undo the curse cast on Binx, she and Max open the spell book to find an answer, only for it to emit a glowing orange light that gives away their exact location to the witches.
  • No Last Name Given: She's only ever called Allison in the movie. However, Wikipedia and the Disney Wiki both claim that her surname is Watts, and various other sites such as Screen Rant and Nerdist have used it as well when referring to her in their news articles.
  • Took a Level in Badass: Later in the movie, she’s able to stand her ground and fight back against the witches. When she learns about their weakness to salt, she creates a salt circle to keep the witches from attacking her and an unconscious Max. Later on, she uses it as her weapon against Sarah and makes a protective barrier around Billy’s grave to protect Dani.

Click here to see him as a human.

Played By: Sean Murray

Voiced By: Jason Marsden

Appearances: Hocus Pocus

A boy who lived in 17th-century Salem. He lost his beloved younger sister to the Sandersons, and was cursed to live for centuries as an immortal black cat. When his old enemies return in the modern day, he joins forces with the teenagers to defeat the witches and avenge his sibling.

  • Age Lift: He was thirteen according to the May 1992 draft. Here he is older.
  • Always with You: Tells this to Dani just as he and Emily are about to head to Heaven.
  • Berserk Button: Don't remind him about his failure to save his sister, especially if you're the one who took her life.
  • Big Brother Instinct: He was this towards his sister Emily. He followed her to the witches’ cabin in the woods and tried to fight back to save Emily. He clearly projects a lot of his feelings about Emily onto Dani as he’s willing to put himself in harm’s way again to keep Winnie from claiming Dani’s life.
  • Big "NO!": He lets one out once the witches start bewitching his sister.
  • Cats Are Magic: He's a teenager who was transformed into a black cat by the Sandersons. He has the ability to speak, and he is effectively immortal.
  • Deadpan Snarker: He's a little frosty towards Max the first time they meet. This is justified, since he had spent 300 years guarding the candle, only for some teenager to light it as a joke.
    Binx: Nice going, Max.
Max: (eyes widen) You can talk.
Binx: Yeah, no kidding. Now get the spellbook! [meows furiously and swats at Max for just staring at him dumbly] Come on, move it!
  • Disney Death: Revives after being crushed by the bus. In a darkly humorous twist, it only seems this way because the characters (and presumably the audience) forgot that he couldn't die (though it also sets up his death later), though he hadn't specifically said that, only that waiting for his life to end didn't work, i.e. he didn't age. When he revives, he shrugs it off like it was an annoyance and is legitimately surprised that the others were concerned.
  • Fate Worse than Death: Is cursed to be an immortal cat, unable to talk for centuries, so he can live with the guilt of being unable to save his sister — all because he called Winifred a hag.
  • Forced Transformation: Was a human boy who was transformed into an immortal cat by the Sandersons.
  • Heroic Sacrifice: Leaps onto Winifred when the latter threatens Dani, so that the latter drops the life potion. Winifred in response knocks him off her broom, injuring Binx. He's later able to pass on after he sees the witches defeated and Dani safe.
  • Immortality: Was cursed by the Sandersons to live forever.
  • Intellectual Animal: Binx can talk and knows a lot more about what's going on than anyone else.
  • Last-Name Basis: The only people who call him "Thackery" are his sister Emily and their father.
  • My Greatest Failure: Even after 300 years, Binx is still beating himself up over Emily's death...
  • My Greatest Second Chance: ...until he manages to save Dani from the same fate.
  • Oh, Crap!: His reaction in a storyboard of the deleted scene where he finds a candy crow in Emily's bed.
  • Talking Animal: Is a talking cat.
  • Together in Death: After the curse was lifted, his spirit rejoins that of his sister's.
  • Took a Level in Badass: As a human wasn't even able to strike a blow against the witches since they incapacitated him. In cat form, he proves to be far more formidable.
    • A deleted scene from the shooting script painted Thacker as a somewhat irresponsible person, as he went fishing and left Emily alone in the woods, which lead to her eating one of the witches' candy crows.
  • Ye Olde Butcherede Englishe: Spoke like this in 1693. By the time of the main narrative, 300 years later, he no longer talks like that, having spent the centuries following along with the changing times, unlike the Sandersons, for whom 1693 might as well have been yesterday.

Heroes (2022)

    Becca

Becca

https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/screenshot_2022_10_03_110042_am_5.png

Played By: Whitney Peak

Appearances: Hocus Pocus 2

A teenage girl living in 2020s Salem. She practices modern day witchcraft, and holds a candelit ritual every year for her birthday. But when she uses a Black Flame Candle for her sixteenth birthday ritual, she accidentally summons the witches and must race to save Salem from their evil plot.

  • All-Loving Hero: Despite everything that the witches had done to her and her friends, Becca is still willing to help Winnie out and allow her to reunite with her sisters.
  • Blue Is Heroic: When Becca's magic manifests, it appears as a bright blue glow, contrasting with the green, red, and purple motifs of the Sandersons.
  • Contrasting Sequel Main Character: Max started out as a cynical non-believer who considered witchcraft "a bunch of hocus pocus". Meanwhile, Becca had always been practicing witchcraft; she owns crystals, frequently visits the local magic shop, and holds a candlelit ritual every year as a birthday tradition. Max was also just a regular guy who relied on trickery to fight the witches, while Becca becomes a witch and uses her new powers to fight them.
  • Dangerous 16th Birthday: She accidentally summons the Sandersons on the night of her sixteenth birthday, and by the end of it, her own magical powers manifest.
  • Foreshadowing: Like Winifred, she wears green clothes and has curly hair. She claims to feel a connection to the woods which is said to be sacred for witches. In the third act, she gains magical powers and becomes Book’s new owner, effectively becoming Winnie’s (more heroic) successor.
  • Good Counterpart: She becomes one to Winifred. They both become witches at 16, but while Winnie immediately uses her newfound powers to wreak havoc on Salem, Becca uses hers to save it. It's not a coincidence that she also has curly hair, wears green, and sports a gold necklace with a round pendant.
  • Took a Level in Badass: She evolves from an everyday high school student to a magically powered novice witch.

    Izzy

Izzy

https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/bd526726_f77c_49e1_a5fc_387f69a88ce1.jpeg

Played By: Belissa Escobedo

Appearances: Hocus Pocus 2

Becca's best friend, who aids her in the fight against the witches.

  • Audience? What Audience?: She gets totally confused when the Sandersons break into a musical number upon their resurrection.
Izzy: Who are they performing for?!
    Sarah: You.
  • Childhood Friends: She’s known Becca since they were five years old, and they’re still going strong.
  • Foreshadowing: Notice how Izzy's ponytail, maroon jacket, and plaid slacks give her a look that's subtly reminiscent of Mary? This indicates that she'll become Becca's right-hand woman in their newly-formed coven, i.e. the "Mary" to her "Winnie"..
  • Muggle Best Friend: Downplayed; she briefly becomes one to Becca after the latter unlocks her witch powers, but by the end, she herself is able to help Becca cast spells, meaning that she has the potential to become a witch too.
  • Third-Party Peacekeeper: She tries to intervene when Becca and Cassie get into an argument.

    Cassie Traske

Cassie Traske

https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/screenshot_20221013_204232.png

Played By: Lilia Buckingham

Appearances: Hocus Pocus 2

Becca's other friend, and the daughter of Salem's current mayor.

  • Childhood Friends: She had been best friends with Becca and Izzy since they were five, but in their teen years, they slowly started to drift apart due to Cassie having a boyfriend who's a jerk.
  • Damsel in Distress: Just like Dani in the first movie, she gets captured by the witches in the third act. They need the blood of their enemy to cast Magicae Maxima, and since Cassie's a direct descendant of Reverend Traske, she's their closest source.
  • Foreshadowing: She's conventionally pretty, slender, a bit of a party girl, and wears a purplish-pink T-shirt... hinting that she'll be the "Sarah" of her peer group.
  • Innocently Insensitive: Downplayed compared to Mike, but she didn't realize that the reason Izzy and Becca don't like Mike is because they thought he was making fun of them. She thought they just didn't like the guy, refused to try and play nice, and then took it out on her.
  • Wild Teen Party: She has a Halloween party at her house while her dad's at the festival. Downplayed, as nothing too crazy is seen—this is a Disney movie, after all. The wildest it ever gets is some loud music, and everyone's out by midnight thanks to her dad getting home early.

Salem Residents (1653)

    Billy Butcherson

William "Billy the Butcher" Butcherson

https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/screenshot_2022_10_02_31134_pm.png
"Wench! Trollop! You buck-toothed, mop riding firefly from Hell! I've waited centuries to say that."

Played By: Doug Jones, Austin J. Ryan (as a teenager)

Appearances: Hocus Pocus | Hocus Pocus 2

Winifred's ex (or so she claims). After he fell for Sarah, Winnie killed him with poison and had his mouth sewn shut, so that he wouldn't spill any secrets even in death. In the present day, he is forced back to life by the witches, emerging as a dusty old zombie.

  • Alliterative Name: Billy Butcherson.
  • Butt-Monkey: Easily suffers the most physical abuse of any character, getting his head knocked off multiple occasions, and his fingers crushed when he's coming out of the sewers and a motorcycle rides over the top of the lid. When he was human, Winifred constanting spread rumors of him being her boyfriend after they kissed only once before she poisoned him for being with Sarah with his mouth sew shut so that he couldn't speak even in death.
  • Disproportionate Retribution: The sequel reveals he was never Winifred's lover. She's been obsessed with him since they were teenagers and they kissed once. In fact, Billy's greatly annoyed when he learns what everyone thinks happened.
  • Fingore: His fingers are severed by a manhole cover, but since he's a zombie, he gets better.
  • Good All Along: Turns out to be this by the end of the first movie, helping the kids protect themselves against the witches to the best of his abilities. The only reason the kids - and the audience - didn't know was because his mouth was sewn shut by Winnie.
  • Heel–Face Turn: Starts out chasing the children. They just barely manage to slip out of his arms at the party — in front of their parents, no less. (Mom wishes she had a camera.) Ultimately, he sides with them after he rips out the threads holding his mouth shut.
  • Insult Backfire: He coldly tells Winifred to "Go to Hell!" Her response?
Winifred: Oh I've been there, thank you. I found it quite lovely.
  • Mouth Stitched Shut: Had his mouth sewn shut by Winifred after she killed him. This prevents him from talking as a zombie until he manages to cut his mouth open and finally tell off Winifred.
  • Not Evil, Just Misunderstood: The whole reason he's assumed to be evil for most of the first movie is because his lips are sewn shut and he can't speak; when he finally manages to do so, then he's able to express his true loyalties. In the second movie, he tries to explain himself as a good zombie to Gilbert who was stereotyping him when they first met.
  • Off with His Head!: One running gag for him is having his head knocked off. When Billy makes his disdain for Winifred known, she tells him to hang onto his head. In the sequel, Gilbert rips his head off for the Sanderson Sister's spell.
  • Undeath Always Ends: Averted between the first and second movies. Despite the Sandersons' defeat and him returning to his grave, he was never actually put back to sleep, meaning he’s been laying in the ground for 29 years until Gilbert digs him up again. Played straight at the end, however.
  • Vocal Evolution: In the first film, Doug Jones gives him a very slight Cockney accent, though it's so subtle that he practically sounds American. Since the sequel gives him even more dialogue, his accent is much more pronounced.

    Book

Manual of Witchcraft and Alchemy ("Book")

https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/e14ba904_57d1_4a23_a039_729442079017.jpeg

Appearances: Hocus Pocus | Hocus Pocus 2

The Sanderson Sisters' living spellbook.

  • Ascended Extra: While it was nothing more than a sentient prop in the first film, the sequel fleshes out its character a bit more. It displays resistance when Winnie attempts to read about Magicae Maxima, it's capable of switching allegiances between characters, and it even sheds a tear when its beloved ex-master disappears.
  • Books That Bite: Book is a book that provides the Sandersons with their spells and can even provide a light to guide them.
  • A Dog Named "Dog": Although this living book has a title, the Manual of Witchcraft and Alchemy, it is known simply as Book.
  • Even Evil Has Standards: It is very much against casting Magicae Maxima, to the point it will close itself up when somebody attempts to look at casting it.
  • Heel–Face Turn: Following Winifred forcing it to let her cast the Magicae Maxima spell and the discovery that Becca is a witch, Book chooses to serve her over Winifred.
  • High-Class Glass: Its lock happens to go over its one eye, evoking the appearance of a monocle.
  • Living MacGuffin: It is one of the most important items to the Sanderson sisters, being the living book containing their spells.
  • Undying Loyalty: Book is loyal to Winifred as it conjures a beacon to alert her to its location and would fly straight to her. But the second movie, Book was reluctant to help Winifred cast the Magicae Maxima spell and sided with Becca for its mistress' good. When Winifred disappears for good to where her sisters are, Book sheds a tear for her.

    Reverend Traske

Reverend Traske

Played By: Tony Hale

Appearances: Hocus Pocus 2

The cruel, yet cowardly reverend who banished the young Sandersons from Salem during the 17th century.

  • Disproportionate Retribution: According to the reverend, what do you do when a teen girl takes the Lord's name in vain and refuses to submit to an arranged marriage? You banish her from the village, of course! Also justified, in a Deliberate Values Dissonance way, as this was considered perfectly acceptable, and was even comparatively merciful, as a punishment for that kind of behavior in the 16-to-1700s.
  • Hate Sink: Sexist, demanding, and willing to banish teenage girls, the Reverend is meant to be as unlikable as possible, making it all the more satisfying when the witches exact their revenge.
  • Large Ham: Tony Hale wastes no energy when he's onscreen.
Reverend: I BANISH THEE FROM SALEM!
  • Last-Name Basis: We're never told his first name. He's only referred to as "Traske" or "The Reverend".
  • Sinister Minister: A cruel, controlling jerkass of a priest.
  • Small Role, Big Impact: He only appears in the sequel's prologue, but if it wasn't for his actions, the Sandersons never would've become witches in the first place.
  • Unwitting Instigator of Doom: He banishes Winnie because he believes her defiance makes her a threat to Salem. In doing so, he ironically puts her on track to becoming Salem's biggest threat, even long past his own death.

    The Mother Witch

The Mother Witch

https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/screenshot_2022_10_02_55414_pm.png
"The world is not too fond of witches. Can't imagine why."

Played By: Hannah Waddingham

Appearances: Hocus Pocus 2

The mysterious witch who met the Sanderson Sisters when they were children. She is the one responsible for turning the girls into the infamous witches they are now.

  • Because I Said So: She says this verbatim when she forbids the girls from using Magicae Maxima.
  • Call-Forward: Her outfit consists of a red dress, a fringed cape, and a sun emblem. Dani would wear a very similar costume centuries later, implied to be based on the Mother Witch herself.
  • Casting Gag: Hannah Waddingham had previously played not one, but two witches onstage: the Wicked Witch of the West and the Witch from Into the Woods.
  • Greater-Scope Villain: You thought Winifred was bad? This is the woman who mentored her. The Sandersons wouldn't have menaced all of Salem if it wasn't for the Mother Witch.
  • I'm a Humanitarian: She eats children, just like her successors.
  • Last-Second Word Swap: When she first meets the Sandersons:
Mother Witch: Thou art different from the other children I have eat— met.
  • Life Drinker: She maintains her mortality by stealing children's souls, something that the Sandersons would go on to do as adults. She nearly murders Sarah this way when they first meet until Winifred intervenes.
  • The Mentor: Introduces the Sandersons to Book and the larger world of witchcraft. She becomes a figure the trio reveres.
  • Mysterious Past: Not much is revealed about her, though there are hints that she has lost her coven (possibly after using Magicae Maxima) and is now operating alone.
  • Pet the Dog: She chose to spare the Sanderson sisters upon realizing Winnie was a witch, and warned them off using Magicae Maxima. Granted, she didn't set the sisters on the best path...
  • Small Role, Big Impact: In the sequel, she only has one scene (two if you count the ending), yet it's her influence that led to the emergence of Salem's most legendary witches.
  • Vain Sorceress: Like the Sanderson sisters later will, she feeds on the lives of children to keep herself young and, in her own words, "ridiculously beautiful".
  • Villain of Another Story: It's implied that she had been feeding off of children since long before the Sandersons have.
  • Would Hurt a Child: Where do you think the sisters got their appetite for children from? She actually comes close to killing Sarah when they first meet until Winnie stops her.

Salem Residents (1693)

    Emily Binx

Emily Binx

Played By: Amanda Shepherd

Appearances: Hocus Pocus

Thackery Binx's younger sibling. She is lured to the Sanderson house to have the life drained out of her by the witches. Her death continues to haunt Thackery to this day.

  • Cruel and Unusual Death: Is hypnotized, lured to the witches' house, and forced to drink a potion that makes her life force vulnerable. The witches then suck the life out of her with a few inhales, so that she dies within seconds, all likely without being aware of it.
  • Death of a Child: The plot is kicked off when she is kidnapped and murdered by the Sanderson sisters.
  • Sacrificial Lamb: Emily is the movie's first casualty, ten minutes after the credits roll. From what we see, she was a sweet girl whom Thackery would protect with his life. As a ghost, she playfully calls to Thackery when welcoming him to heaven.
  • Together in Death: Her spirit rejoins that of her brother's after the curse was lifted at the end.

Salem Residents (1993)

Played By: Tobias Jelinek and Larry Bagby

Appearances: Hocus Pocus

Two bullies who menace Max on Halloween.

Salem Residents (2022)

    Mayor Jefry Traske

Mayor Jefry Traske

Played By: Tony Hale

Appearances: Hocus Pocus 2

The mayor of Salem, and the father of Cassie. He is the descendant of the Sanderson Sisters' old enemy, Reverend Traske.

  • All Part of the Show: The Sandersons bewitch a crowd of people to dance until they find Traske. When they circle around him - while still dancing, mind you - he thinks it's some sort of Flash Mob and giddily joins in.
  • Identical Grandson: Is the spitting image of his ancestor, the Reverend.
  • In the Blood: Considerably downplayed. He's nowhere near as cruel and despicable as his distant ancestor, but his reactions to being delayed, and ultimately denied, a gourmet caramel apple and having to (in his own words) "[...] settle for a caramel-covered matzo ball (from Walgreens)" shows that he can act just as spoiled as the Reverend when he's really pushed.
  • Nice Guy: He's generally a cheery and good-natured man. Even Becca and Izzy consider him "the sweetest man alive" and don't hold their fight with Cassie against him.
  • Parental Obliviousness: He hasn't picked up on the fact that Cassie is on bad terms with Izzy and Becca, despite the girls not having hung out in months. He also doesn't realize Cassie's throwing a party behind his back until he's told.
  • "Shaggy Dog" Story: His arc amounts to him trying to nab a caramel apple, finally getting said apple, and then losing it at the last minute. The poor guy has to settle for a cheap one from Walgreens.
  • Trademark Favorite Food: The man loves the caramel apples from Sandy's Candy Cauldron. He spends most of his screentime trying to get his hands on one.

    Gilbert the Great

Gilbert the Great

https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/87be41ce_23f1_42db_a81a_d0a28f67277d.jpeg

Played By: Sam Richardson

Appearances: Hocus Pocus 2

The proprietor of Olde Salem Magic Shop, a store built within the former Sanderson house.

  • Ascended Fanboy: Subverted. He had admired the Sanderson Sisters ever since he encountered them as a child in 1993. He became so obsessed that he built a store in their house and planned to resurrect them himself. When he finally meets them in the flesh, he immediately gets more than he bargained for when they threaten his life, and force him to gather the ingredients for Magicae Maxima.
  • The Cavalry Arrives Late: At the end, he finally enters the fray to fight the witches — heroic pose and all — but finds that they're already gone. He doesn't mind though, since he didn't have a plan anyway.
  • Horrible Judge of Character: Views the Sanderson sisters as misguided souls forced into committing acts of evil. The truth is far, far from that thought.
  • Remember the New Guy?: He was apparently present as a kid watching the final fight with the sisters at the end of the original movie.
  • This Is Gonna Suck: Once Winnie tells him that he's been "rendered redundant", he braces for impact, knowing he's about to get zapped.
  • Unwitting Instigator of Doom: Gilbert thinks the Sanderson Sisters are just misunderstood and only resorted to evil because they had to. He also thinks it would be cool to bring them back and tricks Becca and Izzy into lighting a Black Flame Candle. He quickly comes to regret this when they throw Becca and Izzy in the dungeon and place a curse on him to do their bidding.
  • Unwitting Pawn: Book takes advantage of Gilbert's eagerness to meet the Sandersons, and teaches him how to craft a Black Flame Candle so that he could bring them back.
  • You Have Outlived Your Usefulness: Once Gilbert gets all the ingredients for the spell, Winifred tosses him away like garbage.

    Mike

Mike

Played By: Froy Gutierrez

Appearances: Hocus Pocus 2

Cassie's jock boyfriend.

  • Big Eater: His first line is him explaining why he is late by saying he decided to have two breakfasts instead of one this morning.
  • Dumb Jock: He never studies for his classes, and Becca jokes about him getting lost on the way to the principal's office. Later on, the witches assume that he's the "village idiot" and scare him into leading them directly to the mayor.
  • Innocently Insensitive: He tends to offend people without even realizing it, especially Becca and Izzy. When the girls help him realize this, he's immediately regretful.
Mike: I thought I was just making conversation... I've got so many people to apologize to.
  • Jerk Jock: Subverted. He's a football player who seemingly makes fun of the girls for doing "witchery". We find out later that he wasn't trying to be mean, he's just Innocently Insensitive.
  • What Happened to the Mouse?: His final scene has him screaming in horror and fainting after encountering a headless Billy. We never see him again afterwards.

Other

    The Broomies

The Broomies

Appearances: Hocus Pocus 2

Mary Sanderson's enchanted Roombas.

  • A Dog Named "Dog": Kind of, Mary doesn't know what they really are. Mary is; however, clearly aware that they are some form of cleaning supplies comparable to a broom and as such are dubbed broomies by her.
  • Haunted Technology: Mary enchants a pair of Roombas as a replacement brooms, which also seems to give them some degree of sentience.
  • Neat Freak: According to Mary they are this, in fact the Sanderson sisters use this trait to escape from a salt circle that keeps them trapped.
"Looky, my brooms. They hate mess. Do you see this?"
  • Those Two Guys: There's two of them and they're always seen together.
  • What Happened to the Mouse?: The Broomies save the sisters from the circle of salt, but they are not seen again after they transport Mary to attack Becca's force field and no mention is given as to what happened to them or if they are still enchanted.
