Carter Family

    Big Bob

Bob "Big Bob" Carter

https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/9371749e_af5c_4ded_bcfb_b405e856b1c0.jpeg
Played By: Ted Levine

  • Adaptational Nice Guy: In the original, Big Bob was a racist, misogynistic jackass who verbally abuses Ethel and neglects Brenda. Here, he's much more likeable and, while still a jerk to Doug, he is much friendlier in general, treats Ethel kindly, and is far more attentive to Brenda, and while he still holds some backwards views, it's far more mild than the original.
  • Cruel and Unusual Death: He is severely beaten by Papa Jupiter, crucified, and then burned alive.
  • Kill It with Fire: The mutants burn him alive after crucifying him.
  • The Worf Effect: He’s played by tough guy actor Ted Levine, and is quickly killed off by the mutants to show that they mean business.

    Doug

Doug Bukowski

Played By: Aaron Stanford

  • Adaptational Badass: In the original, Doug only kills one mutant, Mars, and is only able to do so with Ruby’s help. Here, he becomes a walking badass who kills mutants left and right.
  • Adaptational Job Change: In the original film, Doug’s job was never stated, but here, he’s a cell phone salesman.
  • Combat Pragmatist: In a fight, Doug will do anything to win, whether it be using brute force, a gun, or playing the mutants’ own sadism against them.
  • Flaw Exploitation: He uses the mutants’ sadism against them when Pluto is about to murder him by begging for his life. Pluto and Big Brain distract themselves by mocking him and deciding to draw it out, allowing Doug to stab Pluto in the foot with a screwdriver.
  • Papa Wolf: After the mutants take his baby and kill his wife and in-laws, he goes on a mutant-killing rampage to get his family back.
  • Took a Level in Badass: He goes from an everyman to a badass killing machine who tears through the mutants like tissue paper.

Played By: Vinessa Shaw
  • Mama Bear: Attempted to save her daughter from Lizard, only to be forced to let him molest her to keep him from shooting Catherine.

    Brenda

Brenda Carter

Played By: Emilie de Ravin
  • Dude Magnet: Unfortunately, said dudes were two grotesque mutants.

Mutants

    Pluto
https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/pluto_2png.png

  • Adaptational Dumbass: In the original, Pluto was a Psychopathic Manchild, but here’ he seems to be mentally handicapped.
  • Adaptational Jerkass: He tries to rape Brenda, when in the original, he merely forced her to be quiet, and tried to get Mars not to rape her, albeit for pragmatic reasons rather than any moral reason. Here, he tries to rape her himself, and is stopped by Lizard, so he can rape her instead.
  • The Brute: His primary role in the family. He's not too bright, and is probably mentally challenged, but he makes up for what he lacks in smarts with his strength and sheer brutality.
  • Composite Character: He takes the role of the original Pluto, but also gets the personality of the mentally handicapped Mercury.
  • Cruel and Unusual Death: Doug stabs him in the foot with a screwdriver, in the throat with the American Flag, and then slams an axe into his head.
  • Hoist by His Own Petard: Doug kills him with his own axe.
  • I Have You Now, My Pretty: Upon seeing Brenda asleep, he takes the time to move his hand through her hair and get a good look at her legs in a manner similar to a child experiencing his first crush. He's notably giddy when he's on top of her, attempting to rape her while keeping her quiet. He's very upset when Lizard pulls him aside and rapes Brenda, though he looks happy to have her in his arms and tries to lick her face.
  • Made of Iron: Doug stabs a sharpened baseball bat through Pluto's belly and it doesn't even slow him down.
  • Obliviously Evil: Pluto, unlike the rest of his family, isn’t particularly malicious unless goaded into it, and he seems oblivious to most of his cruel actions.
  • Pet the Dog: Hovers over Catherine's cradle while he and Lizard are in the camper, and doesn't show any interest in killing her.
  • Psychopathic Manchild: Pluto is essentially a gigantic baby, and while he lacks the sadism of most of his family, he’s still a killing machine and he tries to rape Brenda.
  • Wouldn't Hurt a Child: If his interaction with baby Catherine is any indication. Though perhaps he can be goaded into it.

    Lizard

Lizard

Played By: Robert Joy

  • Adaptation Name Change: In the original, he was named Mars,.
  • Adaptation Personality Change: Downplayed. He's pretty much the same as he was in the original, but he comes off far more giddy than Mars did.
  • Adaptational Villainy: He somehow manages to be even more sadistic than Mars. In the original, Mars sadistically raped Brenda and kidnapped the baby, but he didn't force Lynne to be silent and torment her before shooting her, instead just shooting her the second she arrived.
  • Disney Villain Death: Ruby tackles him off a cliff to stop him from killing Doug and the baby.
  • I Have You Now, My Pretty: He is far more violent towards Brenda than Pluto was, but he doesn't bother keeping her quiet as he bruises her face and rapes her. He also threatens to shoot Catherine, only relenting when Lynn backs down, allowing him to lick her face then to open her shirt and allow his mouth access to her breasts.
  • Made of Iron: He survives a lot of punishment. Not even being shot point blank with a shotgun is able to put him down.
  • Sadist: Even more of a sadist than the rest of the mutants, which really says something.
  • Uncertain Doom: The end of the second film shows a mutant wearing Lizard’s glove watching the remaining National Guard members through their own surveillance equipment. Considering how much punishment Lizard survived, it is entirely possible that it is him.
  • Whip Sword: Lizard uses a spike strip (the kind laid across roads to flatten tyres) as a flexible melee weapon.

    Papa Jupiter

Papa Jupiter

Played By: Billy Drago

  • Beard of Evil: He sports a wild, unkempt beard.
  • Decomposite Character: His role as leader of the mutants is transferred to Big Brain, leaving Jupiter as just another mutant.
  • Demoted to Extra: In the original, Papa Jupiter was leader of the mutants. Here’ he’s just another mutant with a few scenes, and Big Brain is the leader.

    Big Brain

Big Brain

Played By: Desmond Askew

  • Decomposite Character: He takes the role of leader of the mutants from Papa Jupiter, who also appears.
  • Gory Discretion Shot: Him being mauled to death by Beast is kept entirely offscreen.
  • Moral Myopia: He sees nothing wrong with sadistically killing the Carter family or anyone else who has the misfortune of running into them. When Doug kills Pluto, Big Brain orders the baby killed as revenge.
  • Non-Action Big Bad: Justified. His mutations and giant head have left him wheelchair bound.
  • Oh, Crap!: Before Beast mauls him to death.
  • Smug Snake: He mocks Doug, who's pleading for his life, while Pluto seemingly has him at his mercy, not realizing Doug is pulling off a Wounded Gazelle Gambit that leads to the death of Pluto.
  • Villainous Breakdown: He has a subtle one after Pluto is killed, resulting in him ordering Lizard to kill the baby. He manages to regain his composure... until Beast enters his house. He dies. Horribly.

    Ruby

    Goggle

Goggle

https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/gogglepng.png
Played By: Ezra Buzzington

  • Adaptation Name Change: He was named Mercury in the original.
  • Affably Evil: His introduction has him cheerfully wave at Ruby while eating Beauty's leg.
  • Decomposite Character: He keeps his role as the mutants' lookout, but his name from the original is given to one of the mutant children and his mental handicap is given to Pluto.
  • Karmic Death: He killed Beauty, and winds up killed by Beast as revenge.

    Cyst
