Miu Iruma

Ultimate Inventor

https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/iruma.png

Voiced by: Haruka Ishida (Japanese), Wendee Lee (English)

An inventor on the cutting edge. She has a rather strange set of priorities—for instance, some of her favorite inventions are a series of devices that make it easier to eat or read while sleeping, while she considers her truly groundbreaking "eyedrop contact lenses" boring and sold the patent. She is incredibly brash and vulgar, but despite this, she will suddenly turn into a wimp if her facade is successfully attacked.

Wanting to get away from the chaos of the killing game, she modifies the academy's Neo World Program to allow the cast to live in Virtual Reality where the risk of death is minimal. However, it is later revealed that she intended to use the program to kill Kokichi Oma in an unsolvable murder. Instead, she is the victim of Chapter 4, strangled to death within Virtual Reality by Gonta Gokuhara, whom Kokichi manipulated into performing a mercy kill.

    A-G
  • Agent Scully: Miu dismisses the supernatural as "unscientific bullshit", and as such, she gets incredibly irritated with Angie and Himiko for constantly talking about Atua and magic, respectively. Her disbelief in the supernatural makes her one of the six students who want nothing to do with Angie's cult. This is downplayed, if not absent, in Ultimate Summer Camp, when Miu, after Angie offhandedly remarks about her ignorance of her island's divine rituals, nervously asks what would happen if she took part.
  • Aggressive Submissive:
    • In both senses. Miu constantly boasts about her accomplishments and appearance, barrages the other characters with insults, and is perhaps the single most vulgar character in the entire series. She also enjoys acting as The Tease to Shuichi, Keebo, and... generally everyone else. Despite this, her aggressive façade cracks very easily and covers up a meeker and submissive side. She's shown to get off when degraded, like being called a "cum dumpster" by Kokichi, and in Love Across the Universe, she will beg for mercy when Shuichi suggests sword-fighting with movie posters, believing that he is punishing her for making him angry. In her Love Suite Event, Miu drops her loudmouthed act and gives Shuichi permission to have his way with her, expecting him to make a move on her. Unlike most examples of this trope, there are still multiple implications that Miu genuinely enjoys being in positions of power, and her Love Hotel event has her taking charge at the end. When she performs maintenance on Keebo, Miu acts assertively in a more flirty manner.
    • In Ultimate Summer Camp, Miu gets angry at Mikan, who then tells her that she is free to write mean words on her. At that moment, Miu awkwardly declines and says that she prefers being written on, suggesting that she prefers being submissive. When Miu snaps at Mikan and accidentally bangs her recently treated wrist, Mikan examines her wrist for new injuries, and Miu, to her horror, discovers that Mikan loves being in a position of power over her patients. Her aggressive-submissive trait gets lampshaded by Fuyuhiko after Miu orders Kirumi to massage her, do maintenance on the Monokubs, and do a system check in the outside world. Kirumi—note that she is a maid, a subservient role—agrees to do the first two tasks but firmly orders Miu to do the third one herself, leading Miu to quickly back down and comply.
Fuyuhiko: I can't tell who's the master here...
    • Miu lampshades this with incredulity when, while trying to get Mikan to try out one of her inventions, gets a strong punch to the gut for saying that testing her invention will be over before she can say donkey punch. When Mikan proceeds to examine Miu's gut, she makes that same joke in an Ironic Echo, dominating Miu once again.
Miu: [incredulous] When did our positions get reversed!?
  • Ain't Too Proud to Beg: She tried to get the others to beg for her in Chapter 4, as Kaede and Shuichi did in Chapter 1, for information on the Virtual Reality world. Kokichi would have none of it and forced her to bow to them. That being said, unlike Kaede and Shuichi, she does not manage to retain any of her dignity when it is over.
  • The Alibi: Invoked then averted in that Miu's murder plan had two layers of alibi: before killing in the Virtual World, Miu stages the scene to appear as if the murder occurred in the real world, and should this deception be discovered, Miu divided the Virtual World with a special wall and disposed of a bridge so she would seemingly have no access to the crime scene within. Her classmates go so far as to even state in the trial that her crime would have been far more difficult to solve if she succeeded.
  • All for Nothing: Not her plan, but Kokichi's plan to have Gonta kill her so Gonta can escape the outside world on his own while everyone else gets executed turns out to be this, as Kokichi was supposed to trick everyone into voting for him instead. Her death ends up being pointless in the end because Kokichi's plan failed and Gonta was identified as the verdict, voted as the culprit, and executed by Monokuma himself, instead of the others being executed and Gonta being freed.
  • Ambiguously Bi: While in the main game Miu has her obvious Ship Tease with Keebo and falls in love with Shuichi if he completes her Free Time Events (and is fond of teasing him any other time), the bonus modes also have Miu admit that she feels aroused when both male and female students slut-shame her. Additionally, she does have some subtext with Kaede, like Miu wanting to touch her breasts during one of their free time events, and when Angie makes wax figurines of all the murdered students, the first thing Miu does is try and look up the Kaede doll's skirt to see if it's wearing panties. If Kaede gives Miu a gift she really likes, Miu comes to the assumption that Kaede is in love with her, and she seems quite happy about this if it's true.
  • Anguished Declaration of Love: Played for Laughs in her fourth Free Time Event. Despite... plenty of obvious evidence suggesting the contrary, Miu tries really hard to deny that she has fallen in love with Shuichi, but she confesses to him anyway.
Miu: Ahhhhh! I mean...! Wh-Wh-What I meant was... ahhhhhh!
    Shuichi: A heartache... I see, so that's what's wrong.
Miu: Y-Y-Yeah! I'm fallin' for you!
    Shuichi: What!? Me!?
Miu: You said it first. That you're so worried about me... cuz you're in love with me.
  • Animal Motifs: Miu's first name can translate as "beautiful rabbit," and her dual ahoges are similar to rabbit ears. Her Lovable Sex Maniac tendencies also fit with her rabbit symbolism: rabbits are symbols of fertility and sexuality due to how quickly they reproduce.
  • Anime Hair: It's pretty wild, all things considered, similar to tentacles or her robotic appendages.
  • Apologetic Attacker: In chapter 4, after Kokichi correctly deduces her intention for meeting him alone, she immediately breaks her lewd character from moments ago and profusely says sorry for what she would do to him, as she has no personal reason for killing him.
  • Aren't You Going to Ravish Me?: In the middle of her Love Suite Event, Miu tries to convince Shuichi to impregnate her so that he will not abandon her. When he declines, she gets immensely offended and then plans to wring his dick like a sponge.
Miu: You motherfucker! If you're not gonna use that dick of yours now, then when, huh!? You know what, fuck it! C'mere, Shuichi! I'm gonna squeeze every last drop outta you!
  • Asshole Victim: Played with. She was overall an obnoxious jerk who spent much of her time hurling insults at the other students and making off-hand, vulgar remarks, making her The Friend Nobody Likes and ultimately died after betraying the class. But she wasn’t wholly irredeemable. While she did try to murder Kokichi, she had an altruistic motive and was genuinely remorseful when she confronts Kokichi, showing that she isn't completely selfish, and she's humanized by her lack of social skills, friendship with Keebo, Friendless Background, and Free Time Events. Even the other characters, as much as they are annoyed by her, are sad when she dies, although their sympathy for her is reduced after realizing her betrayal.
  • The Baby Trap: Miu tries to invoke this during her Love Suite Event, believing that being pregnant with Shuichi's baby is the only way to keep him from abandoning her.
  • Bad Liar: She tends to stutter when she lies, and Miu behaves incredibly suspiciously in Chapter 4, especially when she "accidentally" drops the signpost in the river, preventing the group from crossing it and reaching her side of the map. Or when she insists that Shuichi is worried about her because he is in love with her... immediately after confessing to him outright and having a wild love epiphany.
  • Beauty Is Bad: Miu is a beautiful blonde girl who's rather proud of her charms and capabilities as an inventor, but also happens to be a tactless, but occasionally friendly, jerk with an Inferiority Superiority Complex.
  • Because You Were Nice to Me: Miu seems to warm up to anyone who is consistently kind towards her, and one instance of genuine care and affection is enough for her to fall in love with that person (understandable, considering her Friendless Background); she develops a very close friendship with Keebo for this reason (to say nothing of her not-so-academic fascination with machines), and the two are seen together in later chapters. In addition, throughout her Free Time Events with him, Miu decides to treat Shuichi "real good" after he assures her that her inventions are amazing, and she even falls in love with him after he manages to stop her from disemboweling herself with a wrench and went to check on her afterward. Her Love Suite Event with Shuichi also has her wanting to be his girlfriend because he has cared for her and generally stayed by her since they were kids.
  • Beneath the Mask: She is shy and submissive beneath her rude, Large Ham persona and quickly backs off when confronted. It is also suggested that she uses sex and vulgarity in an attempt to cover up her insecurities, and her indignant reaction to being virgin-shamed (despite virgin-shaming her classmates regularly) and awkwardness in her Love Suite Event imply that Miu might be a virgin herself. Miu also seems more interested in actual love than just sex anyway, as suggested by her Free Time Events and Love Suite Event. Keebo, who has stored all of Miu's deeds in his memory bank, reports that Miu also has a natural innocence that she conceals with her loudmouthed persona.
  • Big-Breast Pride: Miu is very proud of her huge boobs. She has the biggest bust of any girl in the franchise except for Sakura, and she even mocks Kaede for being "flat," even though Kaede's breasts aren't small by any means (only 9cm less than Miu's according to their profiles). Hilariously, when Miu meets Sakura in Ultimate Summer Camp and sees her physique (Miu was talking about boobs, not muscle, as Akane Owari thought), she sulks.
Miu: Urgh. If I'm not the best in the world for my bomb-ass physique, why even keep on living...
  • Big Ego, Hidden Depths: Miu routinely boasts about her beauty, intelligence, and boob size, and she generally acts full of herself. On the other hand, it is all but stated that this is an act to cover up her manifold insecurities (namely that she is a meek and friendless girl with severe abandonment issues who genuinely wants people to like her), as her Free Time Events and Love Suite Event would suggest.
  • Birds of a Feather: A platonic version with Teruteru, as they both are massive perverts.
  • Black Comedy: A veritable fountain of this, especially when she bakes Shuichi a pie with her hair, cookies with her fingernails, and chocolates with her blood, all because she wants the person she likes to eat her.
  • Bludgeoned to Death: Miu tries to invoke this by smuggling a hammer into the Virtual World to kill Kokichi, but Gonta gets the drop on her before she can use it.
  • Blue with Shock: Her corpse, which is an indication of her cause of death.
  • Brains and Bondage: She's a genius engineer and inventor who is a practitioner of BDSM; her outfit, comments about being into waxplay, and general openness about her kinks should indicate this.
  • Break Them by Talking: On the receiving end of two from Kiyotaka Ishimaru in Ultimate Summer Camp for her generally unruly behavior: one time was for refusing to think of ideas to unlock new potential for her talent (Miu breaks down crying after that), and the other was for attempting to tell sex stories with kids around.
Miu: Fuckin' plebs think they can mock me? New potential my shapely genius girl ass! I'd rather develop an invention that brushes your teeth while you sleep! You got a problem, hard head!?
Taka: Hard head... A-Are you addressing me?
Miu: Who else do you think? I just know you're getting hard from head to toe with me standing here!
Taka: For the love of... I won't tolerate this! As a member of the morals committee, I have a bone to pick with you! Your behavior has gone too far!
Miu: Oh, I *bet* you have a bone to pick. You're just dying to spank this naughty ass, aren't you? Stop making things so hard! Your head's hard enough. Both of 'em. Fuckin' virgin.
Taka: Enough, I say! Besides, an invention to use while you're asleep? Your ideas are the epitome of lazy!
Miu: B-But that's my greatest invention to date...
Taka: And you tried to ignore the camp's assignment! Why would you waste such a valuable opportunity!?
Miu: Because nobody understands my talent...
Taka: All you do is rely on your talents. Don't you find that pathetic!? You should reflect on that!
Miu: *sob* Y-You don't have to shout...
  • Brilliant, but Lazy:
    • She somehow manages to be this and a Workaholic at the same time, as suggested by her "While Lying Down" series of inventions that lets people do things while they sleep. She evidently puts a lot of effort into her inventions and gets angry if anyone tries to waste her time, claiming she would have spent it making something. On the other hand, she prefers letting her inventions do the work for her. In addition to her "While Lying Down" inventions, she once modified a drone with a camera so that she could draft a floor plan of the library without any physical effort.
    • This gets deconstructed for laughs in one of her Love Across the Universe date events in the gym. Shuichi can suggest that they warm up, but when they do so and Miu bends over, Shuichi cautiously presses his hands on her back to help her stretch, resulting in Miu hurting her back. This suggests that she is out of shape, likely due to letting her inventions do the work for her.
    • Deconstructed for laughs again in Ultimate Summer Camp when Miu gets tasked with working in the kitchen for the Summer Festival. She attempts to use her "While Lying Down" cooking inventions, but Ibuki joins in on the "roly-poly time". It leads to a pan full of fried rice falling over and burning them both (with Miu in particular being burned by the fried rice). Miu is then told by management that she is prohibited from using her inventions from now on.
  • Brown Note: One of the events in the Ultimate Talent Development Plan bonus mode has her try to hang up hypnotic pink Christmas lights outside that induce orgasms in people who stare at them. Kaede stops her, however.
  • Brutal Honesty:
    • Miu does not sugarcoat what she's thinking. At all. Kaede and Toko call her out on it, but Hiroko Hagakure and Shirokuma admire her for speaking her mind.
Hiroko: That Miu sure is one-of-a-kind. I've never seen a girl so free in both words and mannerism.
    • Miu also candidly admits that her inventions do "weird things" when Mikan, as she prepares to examine her, says "Unlike your inventions, I won't do anything weird."
  • The Bully: Ultimately less of one than Kokichi, given her terrible social skills and tendency to act in terrible taste without realizing it, but even so, she is still more than willing to aggressively insult anyone and anything that crosses her path, in particular targeting the less confrontational students like Shuichi and Himiko, usually in the form of Virgin-Shaming or giving an immature and (usually) obscene nickname. Not to mention that, at her worst, she can make very harsh insults, like calling Kokichi a "lyin' little abortion". Ironically, she is the main target of Kokichi (though he might be aware of Miu's masochism kink and just bullies her to indulge her), making her both this trope and a target.
  • Bunny-Ears Lawyer: She might be an oddball, but her talent as an inventor does come in handy, and her inventions helped the group on several occasions, like during Chapter 5.
  • Butt-Monkey: Boy, is she ever in the Ultimate Talent Development Plan...
    • During the School Festival, Yasuhiro and Celeste reject Miu when she comes to their displays. Celeste in particular spends her whole time ignoring Miu, much to her annoyance. She also comes to Hifumi's display to read his fanfiction, thinking it's just smut he wrote for himself, but Hifumi loudly objects to such a description, scaring her. She does not get a break in her own events either; she uses her "Hookup Counter" on Mikan and gets stunned by a presumably high reading, brings her "Auto-Puncher that Punches You for Telling Terrible Dirty Jokes," which keeps punching her and Teruteru throughout their interaction; and attempts to use her "Goin' Commando Gun" on Gundham (who already goes commando anyway), causing them to argue and get in trouble for making too much noise.
    • Also, during one of the events on Sports Day, she's scolded by Mahiru for cheating by using her inventions instead of playing Table Tennis herself.
  • Buxom Beauty Standard: At 99cm, Miu's got the biggest bustlines of any character in the franchise (barring Sakura) and loves to use that fact as "proof of [her] superiority."
  • Calling Your Bathroom Breaks: While not as passionate about shitting as Nekomaru, she's not exactly shy about mentioning it.
  • Casual Kink: If her outfit hasn't already tipped you off, Miu is a practitioner of BDSM and is a masochist. Miu has given several indications that she is into bondage and wax play, and she has an odd Fetish for machines, which largely contributes to her attraction toward Keebo. She also really enjoys it when Kokichi insults and slut-shames her during trials, and she openly talks about how much she likes to masturbate. With all that said, if her corpse is any indication... she most certainly did not enjoy being strangled to death.
  • Catchphrase Insult: One of her most commonly used insults is "virgin." In fact, one of her voice clips is "Ha! Fuckin' virgin!"
  • Character Tics: She twiddles her hair when feeling flustered or nervous.
  • Chekhov's Gag:
    • Early on in Chapter 3, she performs maintenance on Keebo in a very... suggestive manner, as stated above. This proves to be extremely helpful during the third murder case, as she gives him a "light-up" mode that allows the others to investigate in a dark room, and she also gives him a camera function that allows him to print photos from his memory, which becomes crucial in outing Korekiyo as the culprit.
    • In her first Free Time Event with Shuichi, Miu shows him some of her inventions; one of those inventions is her "Goin' Commando Gun," which teleports underwear. In her last Free Time Event, Miu, having fallen in love with Shuichi, uses the ray gun on herself and gives him both her panties and the right to date her.
  • Childhood Friend Romance: Her fantasy in her Love Suite event, contrary to Shuichi's expectations. The only other student to have this type of fantasy is Maki.
  • Cloudcuckoolander: Miu tends to have some very odd thought processes and ideas. For example, she is convinced that she's an augmented human after surviving a near-fatal car accident and then tries to dismantle herself to prove it. One of her inventions helps you eat while you're sleeping, and a lot of her other inventions are simply as perverted as she is. In one of her Love Across the Universe date events, Shuichi can suggest that he and Miu get some fresh air, and Miu will get the idea of making an air purifier that makes the air taste like her musk. Shuichi even notes that Miu expresses her love in strange ways. After falling in love with him, Miu bakes him a pie with her hair and mentions that she made cookies with her fingernails and chocolates with her blood, saying that she wants the person she likes to eat her. When Shuichi declines for hygienic purposes, Miu decides to give him her panties and insists on him going on a date with her.
  • The Cloudcuckoolander Was Right: Despite her strange way of thinking, Miu actually gets the culprit right in every single trial she participates in, often very early on to boot; she just doesn't have the deductive skills to answer the how and why. See also Right for the Wrong Reasons.
    • To wit:
Trial 1 ー "Then Monokuma's the culprit! Duh-doy! Cuz this whole class trial was his idea!" *True in that Tsumugi works for Monokuma.
Trial 2 ー "I don't care if it was five seconds! It's way too suspicious you were alone in the gym! I think the cleaning lady here is the culprit!"
Trial 3 ー "The culprit used a katana to kill Angie! And the katana was found in Kiyo's research lab!"
& ー "The person who lifted the white sheet is the culprit... And that's none other than Kiyo!"
    • This is exemplified in her Rebuttal Showdown, as she argues Kiyo killed Tenko, though Shuichi cuts through the details she got wrong. Surprisingly, Miu starts at an advantage, meaning the students were actually leaning toward her assessment.
  • Color Motif: Pink, although light blue is also prominent in her design.
  • Combat Pragmatist: In Chapter 4, she pulls the dirty trick of stopping Kokichi from fighting back against her with his virtual avatar by setting him to be paralyzed if he ever touched her. She underestimates Kokichi in this regard since he finds a way around this by using someone else who can touch her avatar to kill her instead.
  • Comically Missing the Point:
    • Prone to happen with Miu, usually in the form of her thinking that a clearly innocuous statement has sexual undertones. To name one example from Ultimate Talent Development Plan, Miu plans to remodel Teruteru into a literal cooking machine, to his horror. Hiyoko, who approves of it so that Teruteru would not say anything again, suggests that Miu sew her mouth shut too, but Miu has this to say:
Miu: I...I've never tried that kinda kink play before... Maybe just a little...
    • For a non-sexual example, Shuichi can suggest that they burn the gym to the ground in Love Across the Universe. Miu then assumes that he wants to use her "Instaburn" invention, which is, as she describes it, "for burning up social media accounts owned by ugly bitches who take too many selfies." That invention, however, will not cause burning anywhere else.
  • Cordon Bleugh Chef: If the pie she baked for Shuichi is of any indication, Miu is an excellent cook. It is just that she tends to add some "hidden ingredients"... which happen to be parts of her body, like hair in her pie, fingernails in her cookies, and blood in her chocolates.
  • Country Matters: Drops one during the aftermath of the second trial after Kirumi Tojo is revealed to be the killer and is trying to get one of the other students executed in her place. She also calls Tenko "Cunt Fu," not long after she dies.
  • Cruel and Unusual Death: She's slowly and painfully strangled for several minutes until her body shuts down, and she dies of shock. It's also an unusually gruesome murder even by the series's standards, as murder victims in Danganronpa generally get relatively clean and instantaneous deaths, with the Gorn saved for the executions.
Shuichi: Her eyes are wide open in panic... She must have suffered quite a bit.
  • Cute Little Fangs: In every sprite where Miu has her mouth open, she has slightly pointier canines than those of some other girls, and they are especially prominent when she's smiling, like this one.
  • Death by Irony:
    • The character with the biggest potty mouth colorfully refers to all the deceased as "pieces of shit" that have been "flushed away." Not to mention that she gave Keebo an upgrade to analyze her turds. Not only is she the very next person to die, but she gets strangled by toilet paper.
Himiko: It was... a fitting end for her.
    • She's also into BDSM on the masochist side of things and wears a choker and two rubber barbed wire collars. Again, she gets strangled to death.
    • In her third Free Time Event with Shuichi, she mentions at one point in her youth, she was in a coma and nearly died. She dies in a virtual reality world while her physical body is comatose.
    • Miu routinely boasts about her intelligence, and one comment she makes about Gonta being the Dumb Muscle is that he "used his 'tard strength to throw the ladder or the body or...something!" Later, Kokichi and Gonta then work in tandem to outsmart Miu when she tries to kill Kokichi and escape.
  • Defeat by Modesty: Both invoked and inverted. When Miu realizes she cannot escape Gonta, she strips down to her underwear to stop him, knowing he would be too chivalrous to approach her.
  • Double Entendre: Loves to deliver these, sometimes even forgoing the entendre. For example:
Miu: You bet it's long enough! [sotto voce] Heh! That's What She Said!
Miu: An important hole near some bush!? Sounds familiar, am I right, ladies!?
  • Didn't See That Coming: She had Kokichi cornered on the roof in the Virtual World. She couldn't have expected he'd coerced Gonta into countering her attempt to kill him.
  • Dies Wide Open: Her corpse, which is pretty rare among the people who die in Danganronpa. This is usually reserved for those who die extra horrific deaths and works against Miu's body not having any injuries.
  • Dirty Coward: A downplayed, Played for Laughs version. When someone pushes back at Miu for her insults, she panics and shifts to her timid personality.
  • Ditzy Genius: Brilliant as she may be regarding machines and inventions, her intelligence seems to be entirely specialized in those fields. Aside from her eccentricities, she's more prone to making irrational leaps of logic than everyone else when participating in a trial.
  • Dressed Like a Dominatrix: Reflecting her being into BDSM, Miu incorporates leather straps, a choker, two barbed wire collars, and high-heeled boots into her school uniform. She may definitely look the part, but in terms of personality... well, Miu certainly tries to act dominant (and she is, at least when with Keebo), but she is actually very submissive; it is not too difficult to reverse positions on her (she becomes submissive to Kirumi, who has the subservient role of a maid, and Mikan, who is very meek in general), and she implies that she prefers being submissive.
  • Dude, Where's My Respect?: Despite having good looks and making very useful and incredible inventions, Miu more often than not does not get the respect that she constantly demands from her classmates, and she gets put down or even cowed into submission instead. Given her penchant for acting full of herself and making jokes that tend to be in terrible taste (not that she realizes this, most of the time, anyway), the reactions from the other classmates are understandable. Funnily enough, if anyone shows her what she perceives to be genuine respect, she will feel very awkward.
  • Entertainment Below Their Age: One of Miu's likes is watching children's television.
  • Establishing Character Moment: When she first meets Kaede and Shuichi, Miu insults them and arrogantly introduces herself, and when Kaede says she hasn't heard of her, Miu mentions she invented and sold off contact-lenses eyedrops, viewing that invention as a failure. She then says she's going to see if she can find some drugs so she can "trip [her] fuckin' balls off" and forget about being trapped at the academy. When Kaede scolds her for this, she reverts to her meek personality, apologizes, and pleads with Kaede not to be angry with her.
  • Expressive Hair: Her hair fluctuates from lively when excited or agitated to wrinkly when frightened or surprised.
  • Exotic Eye Designs: Her irises and the rings around her pupils have an unusual, ragged pattern, making them appear slightly mechanical-looking and thus possibly referencing her talent.
  • Everyone Has Standards:
    • Miu may be very perverted and open about her kinks, but even she finds some things too much for her. For example, she was disgusted by Korekiyo's Brother–Sister Incest and that he murdered Angie and Tenko over it. She even thinks Toko takes things further than she does, finding her fantasy about being Byakuya's doormat and having him wipe his feet on her too disturbing to talk about in public. Amusingly, this can overlap with Hypocritical Humor, as Toko claims that Miu gets turned on by even weirder fantasies than that.
    • Despite her teasing and insulting Kaede, Miu is visibly distraught after she is executed.
    • She always talks about people bowing before her after Kaede and Shuichi did so, but even when someone does so, she's visibly uncomfortable.
    • In Love Across the Universe, Miu is absolutely terrified of the thought of someone Slipping a Mickey into her drink and then raping her.
    • Miu gets nervous when someone makes a sexual advance on her and insists on going on a date first, suggesting that for all her slutty behavior, Miu is actually much more romantic than she lets on.
    • In Ultimate Summer Camp, she's creeped out by how into having control over injured people Mikan is.
  • Fatal Flaw: Cowardice. Miu's paranoia and fear that she will be the next target in the Killing Game grows in intensity as the story goes on and, when the flashback light used in Chapter Four indicates the world outside is just as terrifying as the killing game and could be in greater need of her help, she decides she'd rather win the game to escape by herself despite knowing it'd kill everyone else. Unfortunately, had Miu chosen to work with Shuichi and the group, she could have left with her life, considering how important her inventions prove to be in Chapter Five.
  • Foreshadowing:
    • In the bonus event at the casino, Miu tells Shuichi about Monokuma's slot machine game and later meets him there with Kokichi, Korekiyo, Kaito, and Ryoma also present. When the boys have a match on the slot machines, Miu protests at them for not letting her play despite the fact she told them about the event in the first place. Kaito then retorts that thanks to Miu's know-how with machines, she could easily rig the game in her favor, which Miu feebly denies. Later, Kaito is proven right when Miu does just that in Chapter Four with the Virtual World.
    • In the aftermath of the second trial, Miu seems unnerved when Monokuma states the people outside have undergone some unspecified disaster and comments there are easily millions of people in Japan alone, which returns later when Miu tries to escape the Killing Game because she wants to help people with her inventions.
  • Freudian Slip: While showing the surviving classmates the Virtual World, she at one point takes them to the river and says: "Quit takin' your sweet-ass time! Hurry up and come on me! Er, I mean... come with me! Hurry up!"
  • Friendless Background: Her second Free Time Event with Kaede reveals that Miu didn't have anyone she could call a friend before becoming a part of the killing game, which Miu is embarrassed to admit. This is evidently a sore spot for her since, in Ultimate Talent Development Plan, Miu gets dispirited when Toko tells her that her vulgarity drives people away. Her Love Suite Event also implies that her loneliness is, at least in part, why she acts so loud and obsessed with sex, and that it is exacerbated by her severe abandonment issues.
  • The Friend Nobody Likes:
    • Even during her trial, several students admitted they probably wouldn't have been friends with her, even if they hadn't met in a killing game. Kokichi even lampshaded this trope as, other than him, she is the least well-liked student. Keebo and Gonta (the latter being her amnesiac murderer) were the only students to truly disagree with Kokichi, stating that they thought she was a good person at heart, while some of the students only responded by saying that she didn't deserve to die. The students in question are Kaito and Tsumugi, the latter of which was likely lying about her true feelings. However, Shuichi comments in his internal monologue shortly after she dies that for all her flaws, he does miss her. She is even this in bonus modes as Junko Enoshima found being compared to her and losing to her in a ping-pong tournament to be very despair-inducing.
    • This trope is Deconstructed, as it's partly because Miu is The Friend Nobody Likes that helps push her decision to try and escape the killing game - after all, over half her classmates are already dead, Keebo is the only one who enjoys her company and the flashback light they're exposed to shows the people in the outside world are in a dire situation, so from Miu's perspective she likely assumed it's only a matter of time before somebody tries to kill her and she has no allies left in the game, (aside from Keebo and maybe Gonta, who likes everyone anyway) so her only option was to kill off Kokichi, the only other student less liked than her, in the hopes she could help the people outside who actually needed her and her inventions.
    • When Shuichi spends time with the other students, he says, "X and I grew a little closer today." On the other hand, when he spends time with Miu, he says, "I somehow ended up growing a little closer to Miu..." as if he cannot believe he is growing close to someone like her. It's worth noting that not even Kokichi, another similarly disliked student, gets this dubious distinction.
  • Functional Addict: Implied. Miu occasionally references looking for drugs so she could "trip [her] fuckin' balls off" and forget about being trapped in the academy. Whatever its effects, the drugs are likely a factor in Miu's batty behavior, but at the same time, they do not seem to severely impede her ability to invent.
  • Gadgeteer Genius: Inventing is her talent. Her "While Lying Down" inventions allow the user to be productive while asleep, and some others are just perverted.
  • Geeky Turn-On: When performing maintenance on Keebo, she's gushing over how well-made he is and comments that whoever built him definitely knew what they were doing. She's also Squeeing over the computer room unlocked in Chapter Three, much to Keebo's chagrin.
  • Giving Someone the Pointer Finger: She's fond of doing this, and at least two sprites have her making this gesture.
  • Gone Horribly Wrong: Her attempt at murdering Kokichi of all people, though he was pretty much her only plausible option for a murder victim, only ends up getting her strangled to death by Gonta's avatar instead. The only reason her murder attempt even happens in the first place is thanks to her also failing to gain the trust of the other students, or much rather, their failure to gain Miu's trust.
  • G-Rated Sex: The entire scene in which Miu does maintenance on Keebo, and in a very suggestive matter. Miu was clearly having too much fun:
Miu: [giggling] So THAT'S the sound you make when I touch that spot. Good to know.
  • Gut Feeling: Like Akane's instincts before her, Miu's (incomplete) rationale leads her to latch onto the correct answers sooner than her peers. Whenever she is not trying to bluff her way through things, that is. She correctly identifies the culprit in all three trials she participates in, but it falls to Shuichi to actually prove it.
  • Gyaru Girl: It can be reasonably inferred that Miu is one; for one thing, her pre-game outfit has her wearing platform shoes and a very short skirt, which is common with kogals. This is carried over to her main outfit.
    H-P
  • Harmful to Minors: In Ultimate Summer Camp, Miu attempts to counteract Kokichi telling ghost stories by telling sex stories. When Taka confronts her about this, Miu tries to defend herself by citing Kotoko ("pinkie"), but Taka is having none of it.
  • Hates Being Alone: Miu is a lonely girl at heart, and it is strongly suggested that she acts all loud and slutty in an attempt to cover this up. Her Friendless Background is evidently a sore spot for her as she is embarrassed to admit it when Kaede confronts her about it in her second Free Time Event with her, and in Ultimate Talent Development Plan, she quickly gets dispirited when Toko points out that people cannot put up with her vulgarities, perpetuating her lack of friends. Ultimate Summer Camp has Miu telling Kaede that she is bewildered that Toko, whom she claims is an even bigger pervert than she, has a friend in Komaru, to which Kaede replies that Toko is much less abrasive. Later, Kaede and Miu arrange a sleepover, and Miu specifically tells Kaede not to stand her up and leave her to sleep alone. Her Love Suite Event also suggests that Miu has severe abandonment issues, making her loneliness worse. In the middle of an otherwise pleasant Childhood Friend Romance fantasy, Miu tries to invoke a Baby Trap plan, believing that it is the only sure way to keep her beloved by her side and prevent him from abandoning her.
  • Have I Mentioned I Am Sexually Active Today?: To an extreme degree. Miu tries very hard to play herself off as someone with a lot of sexual experience and is very open about her sexual habits and kinks. However, it is heavily implied that Miu is actually a virgin and nowhere near as slutty as she tries to make herself out to be. At the end of the 3rd trial, Miu indirectly reveals that she has an unlucky love life, much supported by her Friendless Background, when she scolds Korekiyo for "bragging about [his] perfect love life." She also gets very defensive when she gets virgin-shamed, despite virgin-shaming her classmates frequently, and she is uncomfortable about having to strip to her underwear to thwart Gonta. Perhaps most significantly, her Love Suite Event shows Miu being awkward and nervously giving Shuichi permission to have his way with her, further indicating that Miu has never been in a serious opportunity to have sex before.
  • Hidden Depths: There is a lot more to Miu than her simply being an abrasive, arrogant, and insatiably horny inventor.
    • Her Love Hotel Event shows some rather surprising and sad characteristics about Miu, namely that she is lonely and has strong abandonment issues. In it, she sees Shuichi as a childhood friend who has continued to care for her since they were kids and can see past her act. Since he previously told her that he did not need her inventions and suggested that she use them to help others instead, she does not have anything else to give as thanks except herself. Later, she invokes a Baby Trap plan, saying she doesn't want her childhood friend abandon her too.
    • From her interactions with Monotaro, she also genuinely likes children and desires to be a mom. Her apparent love for children is further supported by her character bio stating that she likes children's television, and her Love Suite event, stated above, shows that she does want to have children of her own (although in the latter case, it is more primarily driven by her fear of being abandoned). Miu's interactions Jataro might suggest otherwise, but even so, she does offer to teach Jataro how to make a contraption that feeds him popcorn while in bed after she notices him watching her make one. When trying to get Mikan to test an invention that changes her clothes and examines her health while lying down, Miu mentions that Kotoko helped by designing the arms.
    • Shuichi notes that the apple pie Miu baked for him looks very professional, suggesting that Miu is an excellent cook. It is just that, at least in this case, she has used parts of her body as ingredients. She puts her hair into the pie and tells him she made cookies with her fingernails and chocolates with her blood.
    • For all her acting like a massive slut, Miu is actually more romantic than she lets on and wants actual love more than just sex. For example, when checking on a lovesick Miu, Shuichi can suggest that she get some rest, but Miu, misinterpreting it as a sexual advance, will get nervous and insist that they both go on a date before they hit the sheets. She later bakes some treats for Shuichi (although she added some "hidden ingredients" because she wants the person she likes to eat her) and insists that he go on a date with her should they escape the academy. When he is paired with her for her Love Suite Event, Shuichi prepares himself for "total absurdity" when, contrary to his expectations, Miu's fantasy is a bittersweet Childhood Friend Romance; she sees Shuichi as a friend who has taken care of her ever since they were kids, and she wants to be by his side at all times.
  • Hoist by Her Own Petard:
    • She attempted to have Kokichi killed and frame Kaito for the crime. Unfortunately for her, Kokichi caught on to what she was doing and used Gonta's misguided desire to "save everyone" to his own ends. In addition, she made all of the objects unbreakable in the VR world. Because of that, she could not stop Gonta from strangling her with toilet paper. Not to mention, everyone in the virtual world has the same amount of physical strength - had Gonta strangled her in the real world, her death would have been over almost instantly, but thanks to that, it was more drawn-out and painful.
    • In a more comical version of this trope, her first Free Time Event with Shuichi reveals that she made an "Auto-Puncher that Punches You for Telling Terrible Dirty Jokes." Once she makes a dirty joke, the invention does its job. This invention comes back again in Ultimate Summer Camp, remodelled by Kazuichi at Mahiru's request so that it actively seeks out terrible dirty jokes. When Miu cracks another joke, it punches Miu so hard that she has to have Mikan check it.
  • Hormone-Addled Teenager: A good part of her character boils down to this. Miu dresses in bondage gear, brags about her beauty and big boobs, makes sex jokes, and openly talks about her own sexual habits. The comic book she found at a Chinese restaurant had something to do with this.
  • Horny Scientist: A female example. She's an openly perverted high school Gadgeteer Genius who enjoys cleaning out Keebo's chassis way too much.
  • Huge Schoolgirl: At 173cm (5'8"), she is the third tallest female in the game, and with high heels, she appears even taller. It's noticeable in the class trials since she's flanked by Keebo and Shuichi, who are somewhat shorter than her.
  • Hypocritical Humor:
    • Miu accuses Shuichi of being a pervert, saying that "everyone knows that only pervs wear hats". This is incredibly laughable because Miu herself is a massive pervert, and she is not even wearing a hat!
    • In the Ultimate Talent Development Plan bonus mode, she and Toko start loudly trading insults until Miu calls Toko a doormat, and Toko protests and starts gushing about being a doormat for "Master Byakuya," leading Miu of all people to tell her to keep her weird fantasies to herself. Toko calls her out on it.
    • Miu is fond of Virgin-Shaming her classmates, but when she gets virgin-shamed herself, she gets indignant and gives an exaggerated Of Course I'm Not a Virgin response. This implies that Miu is a virgin herself and her being crass and open about her kinks is, at least in part, an attempt to conceal that fact.
    • Miu occasionally engages in Slut-Shaming; one of her voice clips has her saying "trashy skank," and one of her nicknames for Kaede is "Guy-a-Day." Note that Miu tries really hard to make herself look like a slut and gets off on being slut-shamed.
  • I Just Want to Be Loved: Miu, underneath her perverted loudmouthed persona, is very lonely. She clearly wants people to like her because of her beauty and genius, but her attempts frequently backfire, leading Miu to shrink back to her meek self. Also, her Free Time Events and Love Suite Event suggest that despite generally acting like a slut, she wants actual love and not just sex, as she would insist that she be offered a romantic gesture before going further. Lastly, her fourth Free Time Event shows Miu becoming lovesick for Shuichi because he stopped her from disemboweling herself, suggesting that Miu would fall in love with anyone who is at least somewhat affectionate towards her.
Shuichi: You should get some rest. You're clearly not feeling well.
Miu: Huh...? D-Don't spring that on me all of a sudden...
    Shuichi: What do you mean?
Miu: C-Cuz, I mean, y'know...we should at least go on a date before we hit the sheets...
    Shuichi: What?
  • I Resemble That Remark!: In Ultimate Summer Camp, Miu overhears Angie inviting Aoi to her island to participate in its divine rituals (Aoi tells Angie that she does not have any sex appeal) and then cracks a joke about the islanders being perverts. Angie offhandedly remarks that Miu is ignorant of the island's rituals, and Miu responds by feebly asking what would happen if she participated.
  • I Take Offence to That Last One: Inverted for laughs. When Kokichi calls her a "dumb whore pig" in the second trial, Miu protests at "dumb pig."
  • Idiot Hair: She has two small ahoges, probably meant to resemble rabbit ears, to go with her Meaningful Name.
  • If We Survive This: During her final Free Time Event with Shuichi, she promises to go on a date with him if they escape the facility.
  • Imagined Innuendo: Because she is a pervert, Miu tends to read too much into innocuous remarks and mistake them for something sexual, especially in some of her Love Across the Universe date events. To name some examples, she mistakes Shuichi's suggestion to "get their bodies moving" to mean that they go to the gym storage room and see what happens next, mistakes his remark that he is getting sleepy to mean that he wants to sleep with her, and mistakes his offer to "drink something" as a ploy to drug her and rape her, the last one causing her to panic.
  • The Immodest Orgasm:
    • Miu gets very excited when the other students discuss how to pinpoint Tenko's time of death in the third trial. No one comments on this. Ever.
    • Also whenever Kokichi insults and degrades her throughout the trials, due to her masochism kink.
  • Implausible Deniability: In her fourth Free Time Event with Shuichi, Miu tries really hard to deny that she is lovesick for him... that is, immediately after stripping herself and trying to get him to do the same and confessing outright that she is in love with him.
  • Inferiority Superiority Complex: Miu normally acts like a haughty Insufferable Genius, but this is an attempt to cover up that she is actually a timid girl with self-esteem issues, as shown with an increasing fear of being killed during later chapters, her discomfort when people bow to her (despite her constant attempts at getting people to do so), and within her Love Hotel Event. She's very proud of her big boobs and will make fun of other girls for having boobs smaller than hers, but when she sees Sakura's bust in Ultimate Summer Camp, she sulks. She also very clearly wants people to like her because of her brains and beauty, but she quickly falls apart when these attempts backfire. For example, in her first Free Time Event with Shuichi:
Miu: [after showing Shuichi her inventions] Hah-hahahaha! Whaddaya think!? Bow before my formidable talent!
Shuichi: *sigh*...I don't know what to say. This is all very odd.
Miu: Wh-What...? D-Don't...look at me like that... With those...cold eyes... I just...wanted to show this stuff to you...
  • Innocently Insensitive: Despite her rude, loudmouthed behavior, Miu often seems genuinely surprised when people get annoyed at her blunt ways and crude sense of humor. Kaede notes that Miu's intent isn't usually (key word being "usually") malicious; she just does not seem to realize that she is acting in terrible taste, and she tends to sound insulting even when she tries to be nice. For example, in the Ultimate Talent Development Plan bonus mode, she is shocked that Gundham gets mad at her for calling him "dogfucker" as a greeting. Also, her attempt to compliment Kazuichi's outfit baffles the latter as she also says that people would pay less attention to his face if he did not slouch.
  • Insufferable Genius: She loves to brag about her talent and talks down to most of the other characters. Although, there is no denying that her skills as an inventor have come in handy on more than one occasion. Ironically, Miu is visibly uncomfortable with others degrading themselves for her assistance, as seen when Kaede and Shuichi get on their hands and knees and beg for her help.
  • Insult Backfire:
    • Due to her masochism kink, insults, when directed at her, end up turning her on, and the more vulgar the insult, the more she likes it; Kokichi is aware of this and does just that to indulge her. This is lampshaded in the Ultimate Talent Development Plan bonus mode, shortly after Byakuya Togami calls Miu a "disgusting woman."
      Miu: [aroused] Ergh! Disgusting woman!?
Kaede: Ah, geez... Miu's gone all weird again.
Miu: I-It's not like I secretly enjoy it when someone talks shit to me!
    • It is worth noting that Miu gets off on being sexually degraded, which is why she likes it when, for example, Kokichi calls her a "cum dumpster." However, other insults, particularly those which attack her character, will still hurt her. For instance, when Miu and Toko meet in the dining hall in Ultimate Talent Development Plan, Toko tells Miu that she is lonely because her foul mouth drives people away. Miu gets dispirited:
Miu: Eureka! You only act like a stuck-up bitch cuz you can't admit how lonely you really are!
Toko: Wh-Where did *that* come from!?
Miu: A day without me is like a day without sunlight so I understand why you'd feel so lonely. I guess I can let you bow before my genius. Every beauty needs a beast, after all!
Toko: You're the one who's lonely! B-Because no one can put up with your filthy mouth!
Miu: Y-Yeah right... Nothing relieves me more than distancing myself from plebs like you. I'm a genius, after all... Most people don't have what it takes to get on my level.
Toko: No wonder you don't have friends...
      Miu: [wincing] Grgh!
  • Irony:
    • Though her murder attempt on him failed, Miu's death ends up being the trigger that sets off a chain of events that ends with Kokichi ending his life to stop the killing game.
    • Miu is a massive pervert who, when not busy Virgin-Shaming, routinely makes sexual jokes and acts as The Tease for Keebo, Shuichi, and practically everyone else. On the other hand, if anyone tries to tease Miu back or make (what she perceives to be) a sexual advance, she will quickly try to walk it back. She was also extremely mortified at having to strip to her underwear so that Gonta would not touch her, and her Love Suite Event shows that she is very awkward facing a serious opportunity to have sex. These suggest that she might not be as sexually active as she lets on.
    • Ever since Kaede and Shuichi bowed to Miu, she's been trying to get people to bow before her, but when someone actually does so, Miu gets flustered and uncomfortable.
  • Jerk with a Heart of Gold:
    • Miu quickly establishes her character by insulting Kaede's breast size, accusing Shuichi of being a pervert just because he wears a hat, and generally being very prickly; she spends most of the game boasting about her looks, talent, and intelligence. Despite all this, she can show some form of compassion when things become more serious; she becomes very good friends with Keebo, is very upset over Kaede's death, and repeatedly apologizes to Kokichi as she attempts to kill him. When Miu dies, Shuichi lampshades this before the fourth trial, having this to say:
Shuichi: Miu Iruma, the Ultimate Inventor. She may have given us a lot of trouble, but we all miss her. It's a tragedy, after all. She helped me and Kaede with those cameras, gave Keebo extra functions. In the end, she had done a lot for us...
    • On another note, Keebo, having recorded all her deeds and stored them in his memory bank, reports that she has a natural innocence hidden underneath her loudmouthed front, implying that anyone who has the patience to bear with Miu and her antics will eventually see that she is fundamentally a sweetheart who just happens to have very extreme sides. Her Free Time Events with Kaede and Shuichi and her Love Suite Event support this as they reveal that Miu is also a girl of many insecurities who genuinely wants people to like her; what prevents this is her social ineptitude and general lack of tact, not helped by her Friendless Background. As the two spend enough time with her, Miu warms up to them and makes it clear that she enjoys their company; she just tends to sound insulting even when she tries to be nice. When Kaede tries to teach Miu how to talk to other people normally, Miu becomes grateful and develops a slightly better understanding, though she will make another joke about Kaede being "flat." Likewise, Shuichi, one of her frequent Virgin-Shaming targets, assures an insecure Miu that her inventions are incredible (he just finds a lot of them absurd to the point of being impractical). With that, she decides to treat him "real good" from there, though she will still call him a virgin, and she eventually falls in love with him. She also gives him one of her inventions for free, highlighting her more generous side.
  • Jerkass Has a Point:
    • Her motives for trying to kill Kokichi are altruistic, saying the world needs her and her inventions. Given just how useful her inventions prove to be in the game, she wasn't entirely wrong for thinking this.
    • She's also correct in protesting that Angie and her cult have no right to tell the other students they can't go out at night in Chapter Three, especially since they don't follow this rule.
    • Lampshaded by Kazuichi in Ultimate Summer Camp when Monomi unsuccessfully begs Miu to try to get her to her original form. He points out that Monomi only has vague descriptions of her original form, which is not a lot to work on, and Miu, knowing nothing of the sort, needs more concrete visual aids, like photographs, blueprints, or porn magazines. A combination of this and Miu being... Miu leads her to say this:
Miu: So you were a pink, frilly rabbit that looked like sexy lingerie for a guy to bust on, or some shit?
  • Know-Nothing Know-It-All: While she is a brilliant inventor, Miu is not nearly as skilled at detective work and often needs others to correct her deductions.
  • Kodomomuke: Miu's report card shows she likes watching this. This ties in nicely with both her childish behavior (her juvenile insults and nicknames) and her fondness for children (her tenderness towards her "son" Monotaro).
  • Karmic Death:
    • She attempted to kill Kokichi and frame Kaito for the murder. Kokichi quickly finds out about this and gets Gonta to kill her.
    • Speaking of Gonta, Miu comments about Gonta being the Dumb Muscle at certain points, like saying he used his "'tard strength." Later, Gonta, working with Kokichi, outsmarts Miu in the end.
  • Laborious Laziness: Miu puts in a lot of effort when making her inventions, and she gets angry when anyone wastes her time in any way, saying that the world depends on her genius. On the other hand, she prefers to let her inventions do the work for her; Miu's While Laying Down series allows the user to do things while sleeping, and she once modified a drone with a camera so she could use its photos to draft a floor plan of the library... all to get out of having to do any actual investigative legwork.
  • The Lad-ette: Miu is loud, extremely vulgar, and obnoxious, swears or insults someone almost every time she opens her mouth, is skilled with mechanics and machinery, and refers to herself with the very masculine (and very arrogant) "ore-sama" in the original Japanese, therefore making her one of the least feminine girls in the entire franchise even with her Shrinking Violet moments.
  • Lady Swears-a-Lot: Probably the most foul-mouthed character in V3, if not in the entire series as well; only Genocide Jack comes close to swearing as often. Even the past characters known for constantly swearing, Mondo and Fuyuhiko, are not as foul-mouthed as Miu is.
  • Large Ham: She's boisterous and likes talking big. On the other hand, give her any sign of aggression, and she'll fold back. Wendee Lee was clearly having the time of her life voicing Miu.
  • Lovable Sex Maniac: One of her defining quirks. If her lewd comments, openness about her kinks and sexual habits, and outfit don't make it crystal clear that she is a pervert, her reaction to Kokichi calling her a cum dumpster and this unused sprite (warning: NSFW) are just the icing on the cake. On the other hand, it is strongly suggested that Miu's slutty act in an attempt to cover up that she's lonely and actually never had sex before. She does not like it when people brag about their love lives, implying that her own is very unlucky, if not nonexistent; she gets defensive when virgin-shamed, and she is uncomfortable about having to strip to her underwear to stop Gonta from capturing her. Most significantly, her Love Suite Event shows Miu awkwardly giving Shuichi permission to have his way with her, suggesting that Miu never faced a serious opportunity for sex before. She is also suggested to be much more romantic than her slutty display would suggest, as she would insist on a romantic gesture being offered before going any further whenever someone makes what she perceives to be a sexual advance.
Miu: [shocked] C-Cum dumpster...!? [aroused] Finally...! Someone... finally called me a cum dumpster!!!
  • Love Epiphany: Played for Laughs in her fourth Free Time Event with Shuichi. Miu reacts very wildly as she attempts to process that she's falling in love with Shuichi, like stripping herself and trying to get Shuichi to do the same and trying really hard to deny that she is in love with him... even though she eventually admits it anyway.
  • Luminescent Blush: Shown in a couple of her sprites, especially when she is feeling nervous or aroused.
  • Magnum Opus Dissonance: In-universe. Miu believes that a lot of her best work is from her "While Laying Down" inventions, which allow the user to do things while sleeping. She once made eyedrop contact lenses, but she deemed them a failure because they do not allow the user to do anything while sleeping, so she sold the patents to a company. These contact lenses are more widely used as Kaede tells Miu that her friends use those, but Miu says that Kaede's friends sound like plebs for thinking these contact lenses are useful.
  • Malaproper: Miu tends to do this. She calls a drone she made for Shuichi and Kaede a "prone" and a "drome," and she also says that Kaede has "a lotta ass to be contradictin' [her]," with Tsumugi saying that she probably meant "sass." In the Ultimate Talent Development Plan bonus mode, she calls Hope's Peak Academy "Hope's Peen Academy," though that might also be an instance of Miu being Miu and giving a juvenile sound-alike nickname.
  • Manic Pixie Dream Girl: By the end of Shuichi's Free Time Events with her and during their date events in Love Across the Universe, Miu becomes this for him, with her perverted Large Ham antics and general zaniness contrasting his quieter, soft-spoken demeanor.
  • Masculine Girl, Feminine Boy: She's the Masculine Girl to Keebo's Feminine Boy.
  • Masturbation Means Sexual Frustration: Miu tries to invoke this in her second Free Time Event with Shuichi when she gives him a box of pornographic material (of which at least two of the contents feature herself), believing that he is pent-up. Also, given how open she is about how much she likes to masturbate and that she is strongly implied to act all slutty in an attempt to cover up that she is a virgin, it can be reasonably inferred that Miu masturbates partly because of this trope.
  • Meaningful Name: The kanji used to spell her first name, 美兎, means "beautiful rabbit." Rabbits are famous for having lots of offspring, the perfect metaphor for Miu and her dirty sense of humor, and her double ahoges even look like a pair of rabbit ears. The kanji for her last name, 入間, means "enter a space" (Tee-hee!). The first kanji of her last name (入) can be used to spell "hairu" (入る), which can mean "to enter" (giggity) but also "to start functioning," which fits with her talent as an inventor.
  • Miss Fixit: As expected of the Ultimate Inventor. Miu is capable of performing maintenance on Keebo and is often designated by the group to fix up whatever electronics they come across.
  • Moment Killer: Miu tends to do this. After Himiko cries her heart out to the point of exhaustion, Gonta offers to carry the sleeping Himiko to her room in a very heartwarming moment. Miu then interjects and says that Gonta needs to focus if he wants to feel Himiko's "mosquito bites" poking him. She even does this in her own Love Suite Event, which started with Miu thanking her childhood friend for caring for her all these years and stating that had he not been in her life, she would "prolly be in a gutter or something." However, the moment she reveals that she wants to get pregnant to prevent her childhood friend from abandoning her, it goes downhill from there.
  • Mood-Swinger: She tends to jump wildly between her various moods, particularly during her Free Time Events, switching from being abrasive and full of herself, to being insecure and shy, and to being insatiably horny, often without warning. Shuichi often finds it exhausting to keep up with her.
  • Morality Pet: Weirdly, Miu serves as one for Monotaro and vice versa. An amnesiac Monotaro starts thinking she's his "mommy"; Miu takes this and runs with it, being very gentle and tender towards her "son." When Miu dies, Monotaro helps the students solve the crime by going through the computer files for evidence. This dynamic of Miu acting as Monotaro's mother gets carried over in Ultimate Summer Camp.
  • Ms. Fanservice: A busty blonde girl with a pretty face who wears bondage gear and a short skirt, stripped to her underwear in Chapter Two in a bid to escape Gonta, and then is seen "repairing" Keebo in a very suggestive manner in Chapter Three. She also enjoys, to the point of being turned on, when someone insults or slut-shames her. The amount of fanservice is even exploited In-Universe, since Keebo is a first-person camera for the killing game, and Miu is the one who frequently repairs him, giving the audience a bird's eye view of her... assets.
  • My Eyes Are Up Here: Essentially the essence of her first interaction with Shuichi. Miu being, well, Miu, goes as far as to call him a pervert for wearing a hat. Shuichi has none of that and remains silent for the rest of her introductory scene.
  • Mythology Gag:
    • Like Ibuki, she's the quirky, loud, colorful girl who gets killed off to mark the game taking a darker turn - they even die in the same way, by being strangled to death by a friend who crossed the Despair Event Horizon.
    • One of her voice clips is, "Just the tip is fine!" a paraphrase of what Mikan says in the Danganronpa 3 anime.
  • N-Word Privileges: Miu says that "a robot ain't people, jack." Keebo, who would normally interject and accuse the person of robophobia, lets her remark slide.
  • The Needs of the Many: Similarly to Kirumi, this is what pushes Miu into attempted murder, as she believes that the outside world is in a post-apocalyptic state and her inventions could help the people on the outside and as such, are too useful for her to sit and wait until the Killing Game ends. Though her attempt backfires on her horribly, she is at least spared a brutal execution, unlike Kirumi.
  • The Nicknamer: Often refers to her classmates with (usually) insulting nicknames, including:
    • "Kaediot" and "Guy-a-Day" for Kaede ("Bakamatsu"meaning and "Ikamatsu"meaning in the Japanese version).
    • "Poo-ichi", "Sherlock Homo", Kaede's "Beta Boytoy" for Shuichi ("Saohara"meaning, "Hamehara"meaning, "Dasaihara"meaning, "Munougehara"meaning, "Shobohara"meaning and "Kusaihara"meaning on the Japanese version).
    • Variations of "Donkey-Lips" and "Titless" for Himiko.
    • "Miss Andry," "Cunt-Fu," and "Ten-crotch" for Tenko ("Chabanegokiburi"meaning in the Japanese version).
    • "Cockichi" for Kokichi.
    • "Bobblehead" and "kooky bitch" for Angie.
    • "Creepshow" for Korekiyo.
    • "Cleaning lady" and "emo" for Kirumi.
    • "Tarzan" for Gonta.
    • "Low rider" for Ryoma.
    • "Plain Jane" and "Four-Eyes" for Tsumugi.
    • "Slowko," "mopey masochist mophead," and "Broke-ko" for Toko.
    • "Fuckface" and "Bigcockohyeah" for Byakuya.
    • "Dogfucker" for Gundham.
    • "Pig-face" and "squealer" for Teruteru.
    • "Nasty warthog," "Christmas ham," and "sad-lookin' sow" for Mikan.
    • "Winnie the Piece of Shit" for Monokuma.
    • "Hard head" for Kiyotaka.
    • "Pale, skinny bitch" for Kyoko.
    • "Gloomy uggo" and "Ms. Rain Cloud" for Peko.
    • "Hell on Wheels" for Mondo.
    • "Banana gremlin" for Hiyoko.
    • "Smooth brain" for Akane.
    • "Vermin" and "farts and crafts kid" for Jataro.
    • "Pinkie" for Kotoko.
    • "Cherry boy," "grease-monkey," and "Miu wannabe" for Kazuichi.
      • She herself gets referred to as "Bitchlet" and, perhaps memorably, "Cum Dumpster" by Kokichi in-game. She gets called an "Enchantress" by Gundham, "Blonde Bitch" by Toko, "Pig Woman" by Hiyoko, and "Disgusting Woman" by Byakuya in the Ultimate Talent Development Plan bonus mode.
  • No Social Skills: Her second Free Time Event with Kaede reveals that Miu lacks the social skills to properly filter herself and just says whatever comes to mind, resulting in her insensitive and vulgar manner of speaking (though how much this excuses her tendency to indiscriminately harass her classmates, especially when she does things like attempting to grope Kaede's breasts or using slurs like "'tard" and "homo", is up for debate). Kaede tries to teach Miu how to properly speak with people, especially those that Miu wants to be friends with, but gets exhausted and believes that she used a year's worth of patience (granted, Miu is grateful for that and develops a slightly better understanding on how to talk like a normal person, but still). Even when she manages to avoid sounding insulting, Miu is utterly lacking in social graces. In her Free Time Events with Shuichi, Miu tells him to follow her to her lab and then sets out without waiting for a response from him. After she falls in love with Shuichi, Miu expresses her affection by baking some sweets with her "hidden ingredients" because she wants the person she likes to eat her. When Shuichi declines for hygienic purposes, Miu decides to give him her panties, telling him that he has earned the right to date her.
  • Noodle Implements: In one of her library date events in Love Across the Universe, Miu talks about a comic book she found in a Chinese restaurant that played a role in her sexual awakening. The game immediately shifts to Shuichi's perspective before we hear anything else.
  • Noodle Incident: Two in Love Across the Universe. One of them is her sexual awakening, which somehow involved a comic book she found in a Chinese restaurant. Another is when she peed at the movies, something even she found humiliating.
  • Not-So-Harmless Villain: Though Miu is neither a "villain" nor even really bad, she, like Gundham in the previous game, has her out-there personality Played for Laughs until Chapter 4, where Miu sets up the Virtual World so that she can kill Kokichi and escape. Though it didn't work, Kokichi does note that if Miu had succeeded, it would have been almost impossible for the rest of the group to convict her because Miu's know-how with computers meant that nobody else would have been able to access the evidence they needed to prove she did it, and she already had the perfect fall-guy in Kaito.
  • Nothing Personal: She proclaims that despite targeting Kokichi, she has no personal hatred towards him; she simply wants to escape so that she may help the world with her devices.
  • Odd Friendship: Ultimate Talent Development Plan portrays her and Teruteru as something similar to Vitriolic Best Buds due to their shared perversion.
  • Of Course I'm Not a Virgin: She tends to react indignantly when virgin-shamed (despite Virgin-Shaming her classmates regularly), further suggesting that for all her slutty behavior, she's never actually had sex before.
Miu: A floorboard that comes loose when you step on it is dangerous! God, it's like I'm the only one here who's staying on the ball!
Kokichi: You hardly have any experience with balls to say that, Miu.
Miu: D...don't be stupid... don'tcha know? Me and balls are the best of friends!
  • Oh, Crap!: Miu has this reaction upon discovering that her own "Auto-Puncher" machine is remodeled. Mikan states that Mahiru had Kazuichi remodel it because it is a bad influence on the kids, and now it seeks out lame dirty jokes with a punch.
  • Only Friend: Free Time Events aside, Keebo is her only real friend, to the point where he and Gonta (her amnesiac murderer) are the only people who insist they would have been friends outside the killing game.
  • Overworked Sleep: Miu tends to stay up all night working on some invention or other and then crashes once she's finished, such as in the first chapter after making the cameras for Kaede and Shuichi. After messing around with the Virtual World in chapter four, she does the same thing.
  • The Paranoiac: In a rare moment of vulnerability, Miu admits to Kokichi during a flashback that, while she willingly makes the inventions he asks for, she doesn't trust the other students enough to work together. Even Kokichi seems to feel bad for her at that. Somewhat justified from her perspective: from day one the other students all reacted consistently negatively to her brand of humor, with multiple instances of vocally expressing how disliked she was as a person. Add to this the fact that 3/4 of the murders were completely random in that only Kirumi specifically targeted someone. Kaede just aimed for the mastermind, irrespective of identity; and Korekiyo both murdered by chance necessity, since Angie was at the wrong place at the wrong time, and he was essentially indiscriminate in his intentional murder, discounting Miu as a target simply due to personal taste. As far as Miu sees it, the odds of her becoming a victim only ramp up in every chapter, with fewer potential victims and a distinct pattern of chance factoring into the murders. 1/9 odds are already bad enough, but Gonta, Maki, and Keebo are physically robust, Kokichi is exceptionally cunning, and Shuichi and Kaito have a strong cooperative bond... so by Chapter 4, Miu was not at all unreasonable in viewing the next most likely victims to be her, Himiko, or Tsumugi, with herself as the most disliked.
  • Paper Tiger: Her other defining quirk. Miu may act abrasive and hurl insults and immature nicknames at her classmates, but she is not as confident and assertive as she likes to pretend she is; she will quickly fall apart at even the slightest resistance. Lampshaded by Tsumugi in Chapter 1.
Tsumugi: For someone so aggressive, you're kind of a wimp, huh, Miu?
  • Paralyzing Fear of Sexuality: Surprisingly, despite her perverted antics and tendency to act as The Tease to just about everyone, Miu gets incredibly nervous and uncomfortable whenever someone makes (what she perceives to be) an advance, insisting on a romantic gesture first. Likewise, in her Love Suite Event with Shuichi, Miu quickly drops her Large Ham front and tells him that he can have his way with her. This very strongly implies that Miu has never had sex before, nor has she ever been in a serious opportunity thereof.
  • Parental Substitute: Completely by accident. An amnesiac Monotaro begins thinking that Miu is his "mommy," but she takes it and runs with it, being gentle and tender towards her "son." This dynamic with Monotaro returns in Ultimate Summer Camp.
  • The Perfect Crime: Zigzagged but invoked nonetheless. On the one hand, Miu targeted the smartest student in the class, set up his obvious adversary to be framed, fabricated two layers of alibi, and (most crucially) planned the murder to occur in a location that neutralizes the Ultimate Detective: a virtual world where only she has access to and furthermore can delete decisive evidence. Had she succeeded in her kill, Miu would have been entirely capable of deleting the murder weapon, the cellphone, and the special settings on the avatars, and she could doctor the log records to cement her alibis. On the other hand, her execution of the plan was assisted by Kokichi manipulating the class when they doubted her, and even her own real-time performance was notably suspicious: Miu's reaction to being called out as making the maps catches Shuichi's attention as "off" and Himiko outright calls Miu's incomplete coordination of the group as "sloppy". Not to mention aiming for the smartest student backfired and resulted in her becoming the victim. In the end, the class all around agrees on how difficult it would have been to catch Miu as a culprit, even with her behavior that draws attention, as there could be only speculation with no actual proof that Kaito's testimony was true nor that her alibis were false.
  • Perverted Drooling: Miu has a couple of sprites in which she drools, especially whenever she gets turned on. This is one of them.
  • Pink Is Erotic: Miu is dressed in pink, constantly spouts off foul-mouthed and perverted jokes, and is a shameless pervert.
  • Pink Means Feminine: Subverted. While she does wear pink, she uses the most masculine personal pronoun she can in the Japanese version and likes to act anything but demure. Until someone gets mad at her, that is.
  • Please, Don't Leave Me: Her Love Suite Event shows that Miu evidently has severe abandonment issues. She begs Shuichi not to abandon her and tries to get him to stay with her by making a baby with her.
Miu: N-No! I don't want you to abandon me, too! S-So we...we gotta make a baby!
  • Politically Incorrect Hero: Downplayed. Miu is more of a morally dark gray character than a hero, but nonetheless, she occasionally uses slurs in her more venomous insults, like using a shorter version of the r-word when referring to some of her classmates or calling Shuichi "Sherlock Homo".
  • Potty Emergency: Admits to one at the end of Chapter 2's trial.
Miu: You're literally confusing the shit out of me, cuz this makes no sense and I gotta take a dump.
  • Potty Failure: In Love Across the Universe, she mentions a seemingly humiliating one that happened to her at the movies when selecting the "Let's go to the bathroom" option. Worth noting that she is the only one with that as an option at all.
Shuichi: Let's go to the bathroom.
Miu: T-True...It'd be hell if you had to go during the movie. Uh... I can't allow that tragedy to happen again...
    Shuichi: ...Again!?
  • Proud Beauty: She declares herself a "peerless beauty" and a "gorgeous girl genius" while hurling insults at others, especially about their appearances.
  • Punny Name: Her last name, Iruma, is likely an unintentional example — it sounds a lot like irrumatio, a sex act.
    R-Y
  • Ray Gun: One of her inventions that can teleport the underwear someone is wearing and place them in another person's hand. Miu uses this invention on herself to give Shuichi her panties during her final Free Time Event. Hilarity Ensues in the Ultimate Talent Development Plan bonus mode when she attempts to use it on Gundham.
  • Red Herring: She looks a lot like Kaede, who is said to have a twin sister; the circumstances of her death are the perfect set-up for another twin substitution plot, as in the first game; and she's a prodigy with all manner of machines and computers, and even programs her own virtual world, making her a prime candidate for being the mastermind. And they wouldn't really kill off Kaede for good in the first trial, would they? Actually, they would; the Kaede twin thread is just a deception, the two are unrelated, and neither of them is the mastermind.
  • Reluctant Fanservice Girl: She somehow manages to be this and a Shameless Fanservice Girl. The "reluctant" part comes in when at one moment, she decides to take her clothes off to stop Gonta from capturing her and she looks mortified about the amount of exposure she is doing. She also does not want to talk about having to use her "secret woman weapon" when she first brings it up.
  • Right for the Wrong Reasons: Aside from accurately accusing every culprit in each trial with flawed logic, Miu's actions during investigations are exceptionally useful. See also The Cloudcuckoolander Was Right.
    • In Chapter 1, Miu modifies a drone with a camera to draft a floor plan of the library, which reveals Kaede's trap... all so she can avoid physical effort.
    • In Chapter 2, Miu establishes the alibis for everyone at the Insect Meet And Greet, which contributes to determining Kirumi's setup opportunity... all because she secretly felt left out.
    • In Chapter 3, Miu instantly assesses the wax effigy setup to be a distraction and proposes the séance was entirely a trap to lure Tenko to her death. These are proven true in Korekiyo's trial... with no reasoning other than her intuition from her golden brain.
  • Robosexual: Naturally, one would expect the Ultimate Inventor to be fascinated with a Ridiculously Human Robot like Keebo. It's just that her interests are not exactly academic, much to Shuichi's chagrin...
  • Robosexuals Are Creeps: She gets very up close and personal with Keebo while performing maintenance on him, and the entire scene weirds out Shuichi to the point that he leaves without saying another word.
  • Running Gag: Whenever Miu invents something, there is a good chance that it allows you to do something while lying down.
  • Sad Clown: Miu has several deep-seated issues behind her loudmouthed façade, and her insecurities eventually lead her to take drastic measures in an attempt to escape the killing game. Her insecurities are explored a bit in her Love Suite Event, where it reveals that Miu is desperately lonely and has major abandonment issues.
  • Savvy Guy, Energetic Girl: The loudmouthed and eccentric Miu is the Energetic Girl to the shy and more considerate Shuichi's Savvy Guy, at least during his Free Time Events with her and in their pairings in Love Across the Universe. Otherwise, the role of Savvy Guy is given to Keebo.
  • Shameless Fanservice Girl: Somehow manages to be this and a Reluctant Fanservice Girl. Miu is very open about her kinks, goes along with any perverted suggestion made in the Love Across the Universe bonus mode, and gives Shuichi sexual content of herself during their Free Time Events. She even jokes about the boys masturbating to pictures of her in one of her Free Time Events with Kaede, and she flaunts her body in a swimsuit in Ultimate Summer Camp. That said, Miu is much more embarrassed about sexual situations than she lets on and is implied to be pulling a Have I Mentioned I Am Sexually Active Today? act.
  • Shipper on Deck: In her own Miu way, she seems into the idea of Shuichi and Kaede being a couple. When she sees the two together, she exclaims: "A fuckin' skank and a hat-wearing pervert - you two are made for each other!" in the first chapter and even jokingly suggests that they get condoms from the warehouse.
  • Ship Tease:
    • With Keebo. Miu makes no attempt to hide her "interest" towards him and regularly performs maintenance on his body. The two are often seen together during the later chapters.
    • Also with Shuichi throughout her Free Time Events with him. Miu eventually falls in love with him, bakes him some sweets, and even gives him her panties while telling him that he will go on a date with her should they escape the academy.
  • Shrinking Violet: It may not look like it at first, but this is what Miu is in reality. She is a shy and submissive girl with many insecurities, and she tries to cover them up by acting loudmouthed and perverted. She is also very sensitive and gets startled easily whenever people shout at her. Her shy side is best shown in her Love Suite Event with Shuichi, especially when she nervously explains why she wants to thank Shuichi by permitting him to have his way with her. In the art book, her Japanese voice actress describes Miu as a fundamentally adorable girl who happens to have very extreme sides.
    Miu: ... D-Don't laugh...okay?
    Shuichi: Alright. I won't laugh.
    Miu: You won't...shout at me?
    Shuichi: Of course I won't. Don't worry.
  • Shoo Out the Clowns: With her lewd personality being mostly Played for Laughs, the story became a lot more serious the second she ended up dying, with it being discovered that Gonta killed her. Let's just leave it at that.
  • Signature Laugh: She has a very arrogant "Ah-hahaha!" from one of her voice clips. Her laugh tends to be written as "Hah-hahaha!" or "Hyah-hahaha!"
  • Slut-Shaming: Miu will occasionally do this in addition to her usual Virgin-Shaming, as one of her voice clips is "trashy skank." She even does this to Kaede when she sees her and Shuichi walking together, and a derogatory nickname she uses for Kaede is "Guy-a-Day," suggesting that Kaede is the type of girl who'd date and make out with a different guy every day even when there's nothing about Kaede that specifically suggests this to be true. Funnily enough, if Miu herself is on the receiving end of slut shaming, she gets off on it.
  • Sour Outside, Sad Inside: Miu is very abrasive and prickly, constantly insulting her classmates, getting angry at them if they waste her time, and generally being a nuisance to everyone. Underneath all of Miu's craziness and antics, however, is a lot of insecurities. She wants people to like her because of her beauty and genius, but she quickly falls apart when these attempts fail. She does not trust her classmates enough to work with them, and she ends up attempting to kill Kokichi to escape the Killing Game. Her Love Suite Event also reveals that Miu is a very lonely girl with severe abandonment issues. She wants someone who can always stay by her side, but her abandonment issues led her to believe that a Baby Trap plan is the only sure way that her loved one will stay with her. And, considering her Friendless Background, she will immediately fall in love with anyone who shows her even a tiny amount of care and affection. Yeah. Miu is a hot mess.
  • Spanner in the Works: In the third chapter, her upgrades on Keebo mean that he can take a picture of the circle of the séance, thus proving that Korekiyo was able to trace the salt to get to Tenko in the cage in total darkness and his new light function allow Shuichi and Maki to investigate the basement, where there is key evidence to prove Angie had been attacked in the room and how Korekiyo tampered with the floorboards. The electro hammers also prove vital in Chapter Five and are the only things able to disable the Exisals.
  • Speak Ill of the Dead: One of Miu's less sympathetic qualities is a tendency to mock the deaths of her classmates, saying that its better to find Rantaro's body than a dirty pile of rags and referring to Tenko as "Cunt Fu" as her corpse is laying right in front of her. She also refers to all of the students, dead and alive, as pieces of shit after Korekiyo's execution. Ironically, she was the first person to die after that, and Kokichi does this to her after she dies. Though, Miu being... Miu, this was more likely than not another poor coping mechanism as she is notably shaken by the deaths around her, especially Kaede's.
  • Spoonerism: In the second trial, it was suggested that a ropeway was used to move Ryoma's body. She responded, "Wow, you got drain bamage or something?"
  • Story-Breaker Power: Considering that she created a universal remote that can control the Exisals and electrobombs that can take out Monokuma's cameras, Miu had the potential to be one of the most dangerous players to either the students or Monokuma. Even Kokichi admitted that if Miu succeeded in her plans to kill him, it would be very unlikely for the rest of the students to solve that case as she would have been able to withhold evidence that only she had access to. It was only because of her death that the other students could obtain said evidence. The fact that she is a Know-Nothing Know-It-All and her lack of trust in her fellow students seem to be the only reasons that she isn't able to use her inventions effectively, unlike the far more clever Kokichi in Chapter 5.
  • Straight Man and Wise Guy: The zany, crass Miu serves as the wise guy to the sane, level-headed Kaede's straight man, especially in Ultimate Talent Development Plan and Ultimate Summer Camp.
  • Suspiciously Similar Substitute:
    • To Kazuichi Soda from the second game. Both are mechanical experts with loud appearances, pink and yellow color palettes (their hair and clothing colors are essentially swapped), have No Social Skills which result in them being seen as annoying by many of their friends despite their attempts to help the group with their creations, and personalities who are much weaker than they might initially seem, though Miu seems to be a bit better at keeping the mask up and is way more aggressive. Ironically, Kazuichi survives the Killing Game because throughout it he learns to let go of his old trust issues and believe in his friends - Miu ends up getting killed because she admits she ultimately doesn't trust the other students enough to work with them and ends up trying to kill Kokichi so she could escape the game by herself, leading to both her death and Gonta's. Hilariously, they do meet in the Ultimate Talent Development Plan bonus mode, where Miu, among other things, taunts Kazuichi for being a virgin grease-monkey and boasts about being hotter than Sonia but also compliments his outfit, saying that people would not notice his ugly face if he did not slouch. Kazuichi is understandably bewildered. They even appear together in a couple of Friendship Events and Special Events in Ultimate Summer Camp, wherein they bicker, banter, and brainstorm on invention ideas.
    • She bears some resemblance to Akane Owari from the same game. Both of them are the token tomboyish, big-breasted girls, and mostly rely on Gut Feeling. They're both used as sources of comedy and fanservice in their respective games, have a significant amount of Ship Tease with a robotic classmate, and are voiced by Wendee Lee in the English dub.
    • She's also very similar to Hiyoko Saionji also from the second game. Both are blond-haired thin skinned bullies with extremely eccentric personalities, zero filter, and a tendency to boast in spite of their actually low self-esteem, and in Ultimate Summer Camp, Miu is just as mean towards Mikan Tsumiki as Hiyoko is in her source game. They hide their loneliness beneath a brash and sour exterior, and they are also ultimately jerks with hearts of gold as they, to some extent, care about the rest of the class, even forming genuine friendships with Mahiru and Keebo, respectively, and both of their deaths can be linked to their trust issues. They clash when they meet Ultimate Talent Development Plan and in Ultimate Summer Camp due to their similar personalities.
    • Both Miu and Toko Fukawa from the first game are victims of bullying, yet they also act as The Bully as they constantly insult people around them, and they share a tendency to say whatever is on their mind, no matter how rude or perverted it is. They're also very intelligent and passionate about their talents, and they tend to be happiest when talking about them. While abrasive, they're ultimately jerks with hearts of gold and can be very nice to those who try to understand them. Their lack of social skills is a result of their Friendless Background. Amusingly, Miu thinks Toko is a bigger pervert than she is, yet Toko insists that Miu has weirder fantasies than Toko being Byakuya's doormat.
    • Miu and Mikan Tsumiki, again from Danganronpa 2, both fill in the role in their respective games as the Shrinking Violet. Both are very meek and break down at the first sign of trouble, yet have a genius intellect using it to benefit others, with Miu's inventions helping out with the investigations and Mikan being the coroner of class 77. They also fall victim to the bullies of their respective games (although Miu is also a Thin-Skinned Bully whereas Mikan is disturbed yet still very friendly towards everyone). In addition, they're highly sexualized, which is a key aspect of both of their characters, as both have a strong desire for attention and are scared of being ignored. Hilariously in Ultimate Summer Camp, Miu ends up being the submissive one to Mikan twice: one is after she accidentally bangs her recently treated wrist against the wall, and another is after she gets a very strong punch in the stomach from her (since remodelled) auto-puncher machine.
  • Sweet Baker: She shows elements of this in her final Free Time Event with Shuichi, mixed with Black Comedy. After accepting that she has fallen in love with Shuichi, Miu bakes him a pie and mentions making cookies and chocolates. However, these treats came with her "hidden ingredients": her pie has her hair in it, her cookies have her fingernails, and her chocolates have her blood mixed in, all because she wants the person she likes to eat her.
  • The Tease: She's very fond of acting like this towards Shuichi and... everybody else, really. For instance, she encourages the boys to think of her the next time they masturbate, and she gives Shuichi a box of pornographic content, believing that he is plugged up (she points out that at least two of the contents feature sexual content of herself). In Ultimate Summer Camp, Miu even offers to flash Kazuichi at the bonfire. Funnily enough, if anyone makes (what Miu perceives to be) an advance on her, she will get nervous and try to walk back on it:
Miu: Nice work, ya Miu wannabe! I'll show you my tits as a thank you!
  • Thin-Skinned Bully: Miu's less sympathetic traits boil down to this. She has no problem with dishing out insults but instantly wavers if anyone stands up to her, shouts at her, or, in the case of Kokichi, insults her back.
  • Third-Person Person: She sometimes refers to herself as "the gorgeous girl genius" when speaking.
  • Tiny Guy, Huge Girl: Being 173cm (5'8") tall, she is noticeably taller than her Only Friend Keebo, who is 160cm (5'3") tall.
  • Too Dumb to Live: Played with. Miu's murder plan was rather foolproof, but the issue is that she chose Kokichi as her target. Throughout the game, Kokichi showed himself to be extremely competent and intelligent, with a talent for getting himself out of trouble, and she chose the one person (besides Shuichi) who could outsmart her. In fairness to Miu, she couldn't have predicted that Kokichi would use Gonta and used the setting of the game to ensure he couldn't fight back. In addition, Kokichi trusted Miu, so he was the most likely to go up to the roof, whereas the rest of the class was skeptical of her.
  • Too Kinky to Torture: Played for Laughs. Miu has a masochism kink. She is open about being into waxplay and likes it when she gets degraded, as Hiyoko learned the hard way in the Ultimate Talent Development Plan bonus mode. Hilariously, Miu finds Toko too masochistic for her, as she finds her fantasies about being Byakuya's doormat unnerving (though Toko claims it is Hypocritical Humor on Miu's part).
  • Tsundere: An unusual take on the Harsh type of tsundere. Speaking very broadly, Miu is a very loud, abrasive, and crude girl who makes sex jokes and insults her classmates regularly. Her abrasive side, however, is incredibly fragile, and underneath this is a desperately lonely and meek girl who has No Social Skills and simply wants people to like her and admire her genius. Keebo says that Miu hid a natural innocence, and Miu herself admits to Shuichi in her Love Suite Event that her loudmouthed persona is an act. Miu will warm up to Kaede and Shuichi if they complete her Free Time Events to the point where she really likes spending time with them, though she will still insult them every now and then. In Kaede's case, Miu will develop a slightly better understanding of how to speak like a normal person and thank her for trying to teach her, though not without making another joke about Kaede being "flat." For Shuichi, one of her frequent virgin-shaming targets, Miu will fall in love with him and get him to go on a date with her.
  • Undignified Death: Miu's cause of death is strangulation by toilet paper. In the 4th class trial, Himiko Yumeno claims that the equipment made it a "fitting way to go" due to Miu's proclaimed experimentation with lavatories.
  • Unreliable Narrator: Invoked in Chapter 4 when Kokichi suggests that her motive for killing him so she could escape and save the world was just a lie. However, nothing else disproves her motive, and she seems deadly serious when telling Kokichi about it.
  • Verbal Tic: She sounds out a whimpering "Heeeeee!" whenever startled, especially when someone shouts at her. Case in point from the demo:
Miu: Who else would it be, dumbass!? You got shit for brains or somethin'?
Kaito: Who you callin' a dumbass?! I'm Kaito Momota, Luminary of the Stars!
Miu: Heeeeee!!! D-don’t raise your voice like that...
  • Vengeance Denied: Implied to be part of the reason for her murder plan in Chapter 4. Despite blatantly having intentions to befriend the others, despite her brash attitude, the rest of the cast, especially Kokichi, Himiko joining in too once she can't tolerate Miu's antics, constantly puts her down and doesn't respect her for who she is. Even when manipulating the cast into entering the Neo World Program, and while executing her plan, she is still being given the same mistreatment by everyone else, only further solidifying her desire to kill them all. The "denied" part comes in when Gonta ends up killing her before she has the chance.
  • Victoria's Secret Compartment: While she didn't do it when she was alive, it is shown in the climax of the Class Trial after Shuichi figures out Miu's killer. In the comic strip, Miu reveals that she hid two items in her cleavage: her cell phone to log Kaito out and a bottle of poison to put in Kokichi's seat before she logged on. Due to her cleavage size, it's a wonder she managed to fit in her phone and the bottle. Shuichi figures she hid it somewhere in her body to avoid suspicion as no one would look in her cleavage except Miu.
  • Virgin-Shaming: Tends to do this a lot. Even though it's not been confirmed that the students she is making fun of are virgins or not, she often assumes they are. Funnily enough, while Miu enjoys being slut-shamed, if any student, primarily Kokichi, gives her the Virgin-Shaming treatment, Miu tends to act offended and gives an exaggerated Of Course I'm Not a Virgin response, implying that Miu might be guilty of some Hypocritical Humor. That said, in one of her Love Across the Universe date events, she happily admits that she is more fond of virgins than she lets on; she just expresses it in her own Miu way, like making pink orgasm-inducing Christmas lights as a present for, as she put it, "all the lonely bastards who got no one to spend the holidays with."
Miu: Just imagine—Miu Iruma, the gorgeous girl genius, trapped here forever... Virgins across the world would start sobbin' into their body pillows! I may not look like it cuz my tits are so big, but I've actually got a soft spot for virgins!
  • Virginity Flag: It is very heavily implied that Miu acts all slutty in an attempt to compensate for her lack of actual experience. For instance:
    • Miu gets upset when Korekiyo begins "bragging about [his] perfect love life" and tells him other people aren't as lucky as he. That she scolded him over this implies that her own love life is not very lucky, if not nonexistent (note her Friendless Background).
    • When Kokichi gives her the Virgin-Shaming treatment (something that Miu does to everyone else on a regular basis), Miu gets very defensive and says, "Me and balls are the best of friends".
    • Miu is fond of acting as The Tease to Shuichi and... everybody else, really. On the other hand, if anyone makes what she interprets to be an advance, she backs down and insists on being offered a romantic gesture first. In her Love Suite Event with Shuichi, Miu drops her loudmouthed front and nervously gives Shuichi permission to have his way with her, implying that Miu never went beyond the joking phase.
  • Vitriolic Best Buds: Miu has this sort of dynamic with Kaede and Kazuichi, especially in Ultimate Summer Camp. Kaede has to put up with Miu's zaniness and constant badmouthing, but she is willing to go along with her because Miu does not have any friends, and it reaches the point where she and Miu plan to have a sleepover together. Regarding Kazuichi, he and Miu are paired together since they are both gadgeteer geniuses, but sometimes they bicker, with Miu calling Kazuichi a virgin (as is typical of Miu) and Kazuichi saying that her crassness cancels out her beauty, for example. Other times, they brainstorm invention ideas, and they once engaged in an engineering battle.
  • Vulgar Humor: A source of crass humor, like cursing up a storm or making a sexual joke.
  • Weakness Turns Her On: She has admitted that she finds Keebo's shy personality around her to be attractive. She also becomes attracted to Shuichi and gives him her panties if you complete her Free Time Events.
  • Well-Intentioned Extremist: According to Kokichi's flashback, the motive for her attempted murder to get the others killed was to save the world with her inventions, which is an admirable goal in hindsight considering it turns out said inventions were efficient after all (though she was made specifically to be a participant of the Killing School Semester). Her rival extremist Kokichi was willing to counter this by killing her through murder by proxy, preventing her from competing her goal; however, he had another goal in mind that involved killing the others anyway, so it only made her plan have even more of a negative consequence.
  • Willfully Weak: As it turns out, Miu could have used the Exisals and various pieces of weaponry to fight against Monokuma effectively, which would have turned the game on its head if she acted on it (fittingly, that same thing happens when Kokichi takes advantage of her inventions), but she was too paranoid ever to reveal this to the others.
  • Womanchild: If her overall childish attitude wasn't enough to convince you, her report card says she loves watching TV shows meant for children, and her inventions always have a sticker of the mouse mascot from Niko Niko Happy (presumably one of her favorite shows) on them.
  • Workaholic: Implied - her report card says she dislikes "taking it easy," and she gets angry at anyone who wastes her time in any way, stating that the entire world depends on her genius (which makes sense considering her backstory of ending up in a coma). On the other hand, she also prefers to let her inventions do the work, so she zigzags the trope.
  • Wrench Wench: She is a skilled enough mechanic to perform maintenance on Keebo.
  • Yandere: Played for Laughs in her last free time event with Shuichi. Miu tries to give him a pie with her hair in it. She also baked cookies with her fingernails and made chocolates with her blood as ingredients, saying that she wants the person she loves to eat a little piece of her. Also, her Love Suite Event consists of her attempting to seduce Shuichi into impregnating her so that he would remain by her side forever, Miu's abandonment issues aside.
Miu: C'mon, please...? I...want you... I...need you inside me, Shuichi. Okay? That's okay, right? Please?
  • Your Mind Makes It Real: Miu is killed in a Virtual Reality world, rendering her dead in real life.

"Hyah-hahahahaha! I know, I know... Beauty *and* brains? Why, it's just not fair!"
