TRS discussion resolved to cut
"For a successful technology, reality must take precedence over public relations, for Nature cannot be fooled." - Richard Feynman Hide / Show RepliesAny particular reason this is showing up as 5 Bad Band instead of Five-Bad Band now?
- I found a Five Bad Band in a stage production but I don't know where to put it, any advice?
- Big Bad: Cladwell B. Cladwell, CEO of Urine Good Company.
- Co-Dragons: Mr. McQueen Cladwell's assistant, and Officer Lockstock head of the police.
- The Evil Genius: Senator Fipp who was bribed into keeping the law on Cladwell's side.
- The Brute: Officer Barrel, Lockstock's partner and one of the biggest physical threats.
- The Dark Chick: Penelope Pennywise the owner of the cheapest bathroom in town. She's also Cladwell's former lover and Hope's mother.
- Daddy's Little Villain / Token Good Teammate: Hope, Cladwell's good natured daughter .
"Big Bad: Counterpart to The Leader or The Hero, or if present sometimes the Big Good. Large and in Charge, with an inner circle of mooks to do their bidding and often also an Evil Army as well. Often will be more difficult to identify early on because of the very nature of a Big Bad."
Emphasis added. Really? They have to be physically large? I can't see how that would make sense. I'm removing that; correct me if I'm wrong, but, again, I can't see how I could be.
Hide / Show RepliesI feel like they were shooting for the colloquial meaning of Large and in Charge (as in the largest personality in the group) and Wikiworded it because... hey, why not?
But yeah. Axe it.

Edited by acrobox Hide / Show RepliesThis must invalidate a lot of examples. But it will be hard to tell since with tropes like this, with multiple items (here characters) per example, Zero Context Example seems to be the default way to go.
Edited by VVKI've been looking at the reasons Five-Man Band was locked, one being due to improper examples. The rules for this trope seem pretty much the same as for that one and I was looking around and saw some pretty egregious violations. What do you say we create a cleanup thread for this trope and start a process like the one that's been going on for Five-Man Band for a while now. And if such a process is under way, could someone point me to it?
Removed the Season 1 and 3 Buffy examples. You can't make a Five Bad Band by cramming in every Monster of the Week that happens to be a little bigger or smarter than the last one. The only season of Buffy that comes close to having a Five Bad Band is Season 2; Angelus is the Big Bad, Drusilla is The Dragon, Dalton (the vampire with the glasses) is the Evil Genius, and Spike, who would normally be The Dragon or The Brute, gets to be The Dark Chick in a wheelchair. But The Brute's role remains unfilled... again, you could try to make a case for the various Monster of the Week demons like the Judge and Acathla, but they really weren't around long enough.
Edited by Dausuul Hide / Show RepliesDrusilla is actually considered the Big Bad of Season 2 (Hence The First being her the end of the season 7 premier) Angelus is the Dragon-in-Chief.
Edited by 216.99.32.42Po Po Lo Crois oddly has one despite it seemingly being a quirky mini boss squad
The Big bad Maira The Dragon Boxie(He is fought before Maira plus seemingly the most loyal to her) The Brute Gorg Evil Genius Garp (Transforms into Narcia, manipulates her emotions to sneak into the fairy castle and steal the plate) Dark Chick Zul(A Circus guy whom is turning children into goblins)
"and there may not even be five of them, though there are never fewer than four. "
This line exists in the description, but I don't see any examples listed here with as few as 4. Man of Steel now fits though.
Spoiler Warning
- Big Bad: General Zod
- The Dragon: Foaroa (and possibly also The Dark Chick
- Evil Genius: Jax-Ur
- The Brute: Tor-An
There are allot of examples now that I think it that basically combine The Dark Chick with one of the other positions, most commonly The Dragon. Like Nuits Rouges.
I'd like to challenge the rule on no Real Life examples. Surely, examples of bands of five criminals wouldn't be that bad, would they? We wouldn't be calling the people themselves evil, we'd just be calling them criminals. And criminals are bad, making a five-member band of criminals a Five Bad Band.
"Be who you are and say what you feel. Those who matter don't mind, and those who mind don't matter." -Dr. Seuss Hide / Show RepliesThe Mafia often runs on a comparable format. The Don or Boss is the Big Bad, the Underboss is The Dragon, The Consigliere would be the Evil Genius. And the Boss's top bodyguard or Enforcer would be The Brute (The Luca Brasi role in The Godfather). The main description says that for a Bad Band only 4 is required.
Edited by 216.99.32.42I see a lot of examples that are basically The Big Bad, The Dragon, and then The Brute being a collective of either mooks in general, or three guys rounding them out to five total.
Are these misuse or is this really that flexible?
Found a Youtube Channel with political stances you want to share? Hop on over to this page and add them. Hide / Show RepliesThe main description says that a Bad Band can have as few as 4 people. I think as long as there is a Big Bad and 3 of the other 4 it fits.
The 5 character types for this are more likely to be mixed up then the Heroic version.
Edited by 216.99.32.43 Hide / Show RepliesActually I can't think of a single example that easily and undisputedly fits into all those 5 Archetypes, in fact I find myself questioning if The Dark Chick exists at all. Every female in a Five Bad Band I know of is typically either The Dragon or the Evil Genius, or a Dark Action Girl (or Dark Magical Girl), rarely one could be the Brute, of course there are female Big Bads. But certainly no clear evil Counterpart to The Chick (Which isn't always female anyway). And the ones that inevitably suffer a High-Heel–Face Turn I have trouble calling Dark anything.
Edited by 216.99.32.43Should the Big Bag be replaced with The Leader just as the Five-Man Band did to The Hero?
-looks at the page picture- Toad as the Dragon? REALLY?
People should just accept that the five-man band format cannot be pulled on every team, and that there can be more roles than only the above five which frequently get swapped around. In the X-men picture, Quicksilver is closer to being a Dragon, while Toad might be called The Brute but he is in fact a separate role (The Dirty Rat).
Edited by VreeLet's discuss, what's wrong with Real Life examples?? I am really annoyed when you delete them all. Real Life is actually very perfect trope. Everyone considers Hitler as Big Bad. It is really annoying when I keep seeing those stupid phrases like "No real Life Examples" At least one NEEDS TO BE HERE! If Five Man Band has Real Life, what's the difference with Five Bad Band??
Hide / Show RepliesAgreed. Hitler was the Big Bad of the Nazis, so I don't see why Real Life examples shouldn't be added there. Besides, we have Real Life examples for The Dragon, but not Big Bad. What's up with that?
"Be who you are and say what you feel. Those who matter don't mind, and those who mind don't matter." -Dr. SeussAre these really an example?
Mega Man Zero: Copy X and the Four Guardians (although the latter aren't exactly "villains")
- Big Bad: Copy X
- The Dragon: Harpuia (the spiritual successor)
- Evil Genius: Phantom's the only one of the five to try both a sneak attack and a boss fight before his stage even begins. His division in the Neo Arcadian army is also stated as the Intelligence Unit.
- Phantom could also be considered the second Dragon as well, considering he's the most loyal to Copy X, to the point of trying to take Zero with him.
- The Brute: Fefnir; may not be the largest per se, but he's the most impulsive.
- Dark Chick/Dark Action Girl: Leviathan.
- Big Bad and Evil Genius: Dr.Weil
- The Dragon: Omega. Very Ax-Crazy, yet loyal to Weil.
- The Brute: Copy X Mk-II (a ruthless Knight Templar who is easily manipulated by Weil and is very aggresive in battle.)
- The Dark Chick and Sixth Ranger: Baby Elves (they're considered "distant" enough from the other members and only recruited 1/3 into the story.)
- Sixth Column: Harpuia, Fefnir and Leviathan (they're stripped off of their positions and later aid Zero in his battle against Omega.)
Mega Man ZX Advent:
- Big Bad: Master Albert
- Co-Dragons/The Starscream: Prometheus and Pandora
- Evil Genius: Aeolus. If you call others "fools", than you qualify for this position.
- Albert himself also qualifies, what with him being the Magnificent Bastard...
- The Brute: Atlas. A fight-happy girl who want to force evolution on the world by creating a constant war.
- The Dark Chick: Thetis. A cute, childish boy, yet he want to punish humans for polluting his beloved ocean.
- Sixth Ranger: Siarnaq, having a personality and accent like a mindless robot and lacking the reason for him to attend the Game Of Destiny.
Goddamnit, I knew this place had already been going downhill even before I stopped actively spending so much time here, but I can't believe that I went to just double-check the name on a trope because I was surprised at something being filed under Five-Man Band instead of Five Bad Band and found that the latter has been gone for over three years, on ludicrously bad reasoning.
Like I guess it was being misused a bunch? There are plenty of problematic tropes that get misused far more frequently. This is a clear trope, though.
