Regarding the deprecation of the Let's Play namespace
Wiki Talk has made a decision that all articles in the Let's Play namespace (list of pages in that namespace) should be moved to other namespaces.

Since let's plays are usually video-based, the target namespace is usually WebVideo/. However, some are text-based, and the consensus was to handle the namspacing of those on a case-by-case basis, with Blog/, Fanfic/, and Literature/ brought up as potential targets.

Before any given article is transplanted, we should confirm that it meets the standards for being a TV Tropes work article. Note that these often serve as hybrid articles for their creators in much the same way as the Music namespace. If there is insufficient content, the articles end up becoming about the creators, violating our "no troping real people" policy.

The crucial question is whether the article has any tropable, creative content. This means that it's more than just "Alisha plays games and makes faces." What counts as tropable, creative content? Here are some examples.

  • Creating a fictional/roleplaying narrative that is distinct from the game being played or the real person doing the LP.
  • Using the game as a medium to craft original content: songs, videos, machinima, and so on.
  • "MST'ing" or creatively riffing on the game's content, as long as it's sufficiently transformative.

What are not criteria for a tropable Let's Play by themselves?

  • Adopting a quirky personality, cracking jokes, making funny faces, or overreacting to jump scares.
  • Cosplaying, playing with toys, unboxing merchandise, etc.
  • Having a "gimmick" that makes them stand out, such as a repeated Catchphrase, eating loudly on microphone, or calling their viewers "Doggo fam".
  • Playing games in a particular way (speedrunning, evil runs, no-kill runs, etc.) that fall within what it is possible to do in the game itself, with or without mods.
  • Modding the game.
  • Being very popular.
  • Having lots of memes arise in their fandom.

Note that the same general principles apply to any Web Video creator, especially those whose main work is in news, reviews, vlogging, and/or reaction videos.

There are a few outliers that will need to be handled on a case-by-case basis.

  • After-Action Report: I would move it to literature, although it could be considered fanfic.
  • Liveblogs, which are probably not tropable.

Web Video cleanup sandbox

This project has several purposes related to all things Web Video:

  • Cleaning up the WebVideo index
  • Cleaning up the WebVideo/ namespace to move pages that belong elsewhere
  • Cleaning up individual Web Video pages that have massive issues

    open/close all folders

Overview

    Why this project?
I started the sandbox several months ago, naively believing it would be a simple project to clear out some index misuses here and there— ha! I was so wrong.

The easy-seeming part when I started on Web Video (the index) was just removing things not even located in the namespace— found in Creator, Film, Web Animation, etc. Then I started noticing there were many things put in Web Video (the namespace) that were basically Creator pages, lots of Let's Play, other video game streaming that doesn't currently have an index, other misuses in index and/or namespace placement...

    The Web Video index
As described, the index is for pages about works meeting all these criteria:
  1. original live action, meaning not animated or reusing existing footage;
  2. narrative/creative, a bit unclear, but it's not someone simply reviewing another work/reacting to other works/playing through another work;
  3. a work, which is... a work, not a creator.
So the index itself is a narrow type of web video, not everything ever put on YouTube or every kind of online video. That... isn't what has happened.

    The Web Video/ namespace
The namespace (see here) is much more broad: "Live-action videos and video-based Lets Plays originally or only released online. Covers both YouTube videos and web-exclusive series, but does not include those that belong in the WebAnimation/ namespace. For big-budget series exclusive to streaming services such as Netflix, use Series/ or the appropriate animation namespace instead." — Not limited to original or live action footage, narrative works, etc. However, people have mistakenly created Web Animation pages in this namespace, made what are essentially creator pages, typed it as "Webvideo", etc.

    What about reviews?
Re: War Jay 77's question "Would 'commentary channels' count as reviewers? The sort of people who poke fun at, say, Jake Paul, rather than movies.", Fighteer said here:
No, because the subjects of those channels are Real Life topics. If your subject is a work of fiction, you are creating a derivative work, review, Let's Play, etc. If your subject is a real person, place, thing, or topic, then you are creating documentary, news, or an opinion piece.

Reaction channels tend to straddle a line here, but are not generally tropable unless they create some sort of distinct creative endeavor rather than stare at a video and laugh a bit. Also it helps if they are reacting to fiction, not to real life. The latter may be entertaining but falls into the same general category as gossip. We can trope these only for their use of production and artistic tropes, not for their topics.

    What are we missing?
  • No Analysis Channel index — corrected!
  • No index for non-Let's Play video game streaming unless they're on Twitch. If they don't fall into the Let's Play format and aren't on Twitch, where do they go?
  • No Gag Dub or Gag Sub index
  • Where should we put channels based on prank calls, scam-baiting, other audio-based things where the video is incidental?

Just the index cleanup itself is a considerable project, figuring out what stays and what needs a different index, but there are also many pages with significant issues to clean. This is a very big project, but I've seen other people notice these issues, too. I hope we can at least get the index under control.

([nja] For clarity and re: review stuff. Continue to edit as things occur that are useful to keep at the top of the thread.)

Channels like CinemaSins build up a stable of in-jokes and running gags that might be tropeworthy, but they're edge cases. I've always maintained that those alone don't count, and that needs to remain consistent.

What original, creative, transformative content do CS and its sister channels bring to the media they criticize?

Overlord DVD is a page I've wondered about, as while it does has "characters", the main Doomcock character's opinions are simply just the creator's own opinions, not a character. Also the content itself is clickbait content reporting about Disney being "Woke", which isn't really tropeable (ie similar channels like The Quartering do not have pages, nor should they)

OK, so WebVideo.Grade A Under A is definitely WebAnimation/ right? I mean there's zero original live-action footage from Grade himself, the only live-action footage shown are videos from other creators. I know his "animation" is one of the minimalist kind, but I believe it still counts.

[up][up]True, Doomcock does seem to be one of *those* people, but it looks like his article seems pretty tame compared to, say, the articles for Critical Drinker or Mauler when they were around. It focuses on the other "characters" for the most part, with the exception of the very bottom. If nothing else, that could probably use a rewrite.

Is WebVideo.Act Promptly in the correct namespace? It was originally created in WebOriginal/, then moved to WebVideo/, but seeing as it appears to be a VTuber show, it seems like it would be more appropriate for WebAnimation/.

Trouble Cube continues to be a general-purpose forum for those who desire such a thing.

[up][up][up] I would agree that Grade A Under A is Web Animation. I'd say it belongs there more than something like Sawtooth Waves, which is already in the namespace.

On a related note, Taco Man needs to join Web Animation.

SNES drunk is a reviewer that I feel isn't tropable, as it is solely just reviewing SNES games (and other retro games), with no exaggeration. He speaks in a calm voice and not a silly cartoony one, doesn't play any sort of character, doesn't even show his face, and does not give any exaggerated opinions. I enjoy his content but he really doesn't belong here.

I've been helping maintain Roahm Mythril and Pink Kitty Rose's pages for some years now, so I suppose I might as well ask. Do these get moved to Web Original, Web Video or what have you, or should they be eschewed altogether?

[up] Do they create a narrative outside of the games' default one? Do they play a character beyond your normal "internet persona" type of deal? Do they play a game in a way that is transformative to an extent that it is tropable separate from the game itself? (Potholes lead to examples)

Unless the answer to one of the above is yes, it's very likely they aren't tropable. If most of the tropes relate to how they react and their personality as people, that's not tropable.

In general with pages about individual let's players rather than specific series, I feel it becomes easier to fall into the trap of Real Life Troping unless you're talking about something like Dream's manhunts or Ivorycello's prison escapes, since most of the time pages for individual LPers tend to just come down to "person playing games".

The OP of this thread goes into more detail on this in the folder about the depreciation of the Let's Play namespace.

Particularly, this section from the page on Real Life Troping may also help you:

If a work is presented as a show in which real actors are playing fictional characters, it has to be obvious that it's a fictionalized scenario or persona. The content creator could be asking audiences to assume everything they do or say is what their character does or would say, but we can't acknowledge that. Changing your appearance and having a backstory does not count as acting or roleplaying. If we can't distinguish at any given point if the person is talking about themselves or about the character, we have to default to the former and not allow tropes.

[up] I hope my response didn't come off as too much of a wall of text/condescending, or like, shutting you down, I was just trying to explain the distinction between tropable and non-tropable Let's Play content. ^^; Others may have more experience with your creators here and believe they are tropable, I can't really make a judgement from the pages here alone.

If it's of any consolation, I think you should be a-okay to keep Pink Rose Garden Touhou regardless of whether those LPers are tropable.

[up] It wasn't anything like that, no. It's just that I considered myself to have a vested interest (for the lack of a better expression) in those particular pages for the past eight years or so, and I hated to have to see them go.

Ah, well. If worst comes to worst, I can at least save them to disk and look at them offline if I need to. [lol] All the same, I still do appreciate you telling me.

Going by that logic, plenty of other Let's Players will need to be examined, including some bigger names. For example, I have followed Chuggaaconroy for years and I am not sure if his associated pages would see a simple overhaul, since most of his videos may not qualify as transformative.

[down] Alright. [tup]

As for Pink Kitty Rose's page, at least we can nuke the Everyone Has Standards example; that's also skirting the trope's Real Life example prohibition.

Now, re: Pink Kitty Rose, as I'm familiar with her: I'd say she can be filed under Weird Case.

One one side of the spectrum are her early videos, which is gameplay + textboxes featuring her comments. Not very tropable. On the other, her interactions with the voiced tracker during her SMZ3 is very sitcom-like. That could be troped.

Did some more sorting, here's another batch of "I think these are easy cuts":

  • Bren Tenkage: Hot mess of a page last edited 7 years ago, lot of RL troping.
  • Get Daved: All RL troping or reactions.
  • GI Proz: 99% troping the people's normal personalities.
  • Lathrix: Short page filled with RL troping.
  • Mischa Crossing: Entirely RL troping.
  • Nalif: Pretty much all RL troping or basic reactions/gameplay.

Sorry if they've been brought up before (I did look at previous pages but not all of them) but I'm wondering if the pages for H.Bomberguy and Folding Ideas, at least, warrants some serious cleaning up based on what I've seen in this thread.

The main things I see are

  • Both don't have narratives as I understand is defined by TV Tropes. They present as themselves, they don't have distinct characters (the page for Dan Olson mention him having a puppet but it says he's phased out, and not having watched most of his videos, I don't know how extensive the puppet's presense was or if it could be said to be a capital-C Character or just the guy saying things in a funny voice), they do have gags and creative editing but no longform story.
  • Both have their bread and butter on commenting on real people and events, and as such a lot of entries on both creator's page do Real Life Troping that seems to go agains the recommendations on that page. Stuff like "Blatant Lies hbomberguy's Roblox video shows how much of a pathological liar Tommy Tallarico is" (Which yeah, speaking as myself and not a Concerned Citizen, he totally is but Tommy Tallarico is also a real person who was not doing it for some sort of Andy Kaufman-esque bit, and not a character in a work of fiction)

Mostly I am uncertain about the whole Books on Trope clause and what sort of commentary counts as transformative enough to warrant coverage on this site. A few months back I made an Ask The Tropers querry about reviewer pages and I was told entries like "Special Effects Failure: The reviewer finds the special effect in Movie bad" were not legit, and while some of the entries do use the reviewer's content to talk about a trope's use in fiction and yadadi yadada, a lot of it seems to be just troping the creator's subjective opinions and interpretations of a work.

So yeah, thoughts?

  • If something feels like it needs a cleanup, automatically assume it does. Since editing is free and all pages require to be clean, it's only a question of work size.
  • Hbomberguy seems to use a lot of comedy bits and gags in his discussions, and at least the Roblox video had a Framing Device of the guy uncovering some old conspiracy with a dedicated costume. If oages focuses on what H does and not what he talks about, it should be okay, otherwise see previous point. Never heard of the other guy.
  • This discussion really needs to finalize, but the general direction is that if a vidoe has only Discussed Trope, it's not tropable.

Another potential candidate for Weird Cases or perhaps salvageable is ProtonJon.

The tropeworthiness of his LP projects and streams fluctuate quite a bit. He does have obvious tropeworthy content in the form of some stream gags and plenty of fanmade Original Characters that are incorporated into his brand.
