The Hindsight tropes, Hilarious in Hindsight, Harsher in Hindsight, and Heartwarming in Hindsight, are among the most misused Audience Reaction tropes on this site. Many people don't understand that the tropes require more than just "This happened, so that happened", and end up adding examples which either lack connection or the substance that makes them funny/serious/not-so-funny/heartwarming. Some of them may be suited better for other tropes (ex: Life Imitates Art), while some may not belong on TV Tropes at all (such as ones involving politicians, due to Rule of Cautious Editing Judgment).

Please report any Hindsight example that you feel are questionable, and we'll analyze them to see if they are actually examples or not.

Remember that the Hindsight tropes are Audience Reactions. That means if an example under review discusses significant fan response pointing out the hindsight, the example can't be cut solely for being too tenuous for this thread.

    Common NOT in Hindsight examples
  • Creator's character/portrayal dies in work and then creator dies in real life, unless their fictional death is closely similar to their real one (such as Billy Bob Joe portraying a character who dies from pancreatic cancer, then Billy Bob dies from pancreatic cancer himself)
  • Mundane word related to something terrible (such as "corona" or "Epstein") unless there's more to the connection (such as someone named "Corona" having the flu)
  • Creator appears in work then becomes more controversial later on.
  • A common event (such as a typical natural disaster) happens in work, then happens in real life (unless they are closely similar, such as the event happening to the same area in both reality and fiction around the same time) For once, not everything related to disease has to do with COVID-19, not everything related to racism and Police Brutality has to do with George Floyd and Black Lives Matter, and not everything related to sexual abuse has to do with #MeToo.
  • A common/generic concept was used in this work and then later reused in that work (too loose for a connection, unless the concept is so unique it's identified with the work)
  • Two actors appear together then do so in another work
  • Hindsight examples involving recent events, due to them often being shoehorns. Specifically:
    • COVID-19 examples, before 75% of the population has returned to normal
    • George Floyd/2020 Black Lives Matter examples, before protests have declined
  • Examples which fall guilty of Older Than They Think, such as "Make X Great Again" slogans. Aside from violating the ROCEJ, this slogan has been in use since the 1940s.
  • Characters using slurs which are treated as annoying at worst in the work, but is now harsher due to how severe the slur is made now. Discrimination has always existed with that slur. (May qualify for Values Dissonance if work is at least 20 years old.)

Note: As of January 2022, "Funny Aneurysm" Moment is no longer separate from Harsher in Hindsight.
  • The former redirects to the latter and all wicks to the former (with the exception of ones on archive pages and the YMMV Redirects index) must either be moved to the latter (if they're valid) or removed (if they're invalid).
  • The subpages for the former are still accessible from this page. After a subpage for "Funny Aneurysm" Moment has been completely cleaned up, turn it into a redirect to the Harsher in Hindsight subpage for the same medium to preserve inbounds.

Wouldn't it still be in hindsight in regards to pilot?

I thought it was too intentional to be Hindsight (the reason he makes the joke is likely the same reason they cast someone who played that role), but I suppose it can still be valid if that's not as clear.

I mean that's the point, the recast was intentional, but that happened 3 years after the Pilot when it was still a fan project with uncertain future. If the reference was made with Amir Talai in mind, it wouldn't be in hindsight.

It’s not just that line. As the example mentioned, Alastor in general was inspired by Healy.

Found this at The Presidents of the United States of America:

Isn't this just a song with the same title as another song was released? I don't see any connection between the movie and the band other than two songs with the same title.

This is Similarly Named Works at most, definitely not Hilarious in Hindsight because it doesn't make the original song funnier.

[up][up] Yeah, and Justin Bieber also had a popular song named Peaches which came out before the Mario Movie as well, so it's just a case of songs with similar titles, no one will get confused between these 3 songs.

I feel like, the two Harsher in Hindsight examples in Call of Duty: Modern Warfare II are just shoehorning very recent and ongoing (both of them were added in November 2023) political drama/events in USA. Can I cut them?

Any Sonic the Hedgehog fans here?

    Sonic 1
  • Harsher in Hindsight: The GBA version was made for Sonic's 15th anniversary. Unfortunately, the final product ended up being a Porting Disaster due to the porting team's baffling decision to use an earlier Java mobile port as the basis instead of using the original Genesis version's source code. Not helping matters is Simon "Stealth" Thomley would later port Green Hill Zone as proof that the game could work just fine on the handheld, which would eventually lead to him working on the Sonic 1 mobile port.
No hindsight, just complaining about a bad game
  • Hilarious in Hindsight:
    • Despite being a game sold on its speed, experts (such as this YouTuber) consider this entry nearly impossible to speedrun.
There are countless speedruns of this game all over the internet
    • A Japanese commercial features Sonic destroying an ersatz Death Star with Eggman's face on it. Fast forward to Sonic the Hedgehog 2 and a Death Star ersatz, the Death Egg, would prominently appear.
    Valid
Unsure; describes something that isn't actually in the game

    Sonic 3
  • Hilarious in Hindsight:
    • One fan, as part of a series of classic zone remixes inspired by Sonic the Hedgehog CD's past/present/future renditions, did a past version of Launch Base which was a remix of the track from the Sonic & Knuckles Collection port. A year later, it was revealed in a prototype for Sonic 3 that this was actually an unused track for the zone before being replaced, which makes the aforementioned fan remix very appropriate as the track is literally from the game's past.
    • Every fanmade Mega Drive/Genesis rearrangement of the tracks from the Sonic & Knuckles Collection done prior to the revelation have become this in light of a prototype revealing that they were originally intended to be in the original Mega Drive/Genesis game prior to getting scrapped.
    • A prototype for the game contains a couple of experimental moves for Sonic such as ring-tossing and a primitive version of what players eventually came to know as the Drop Dash.
    • The developers decided against implementing proper Knuckles playability when locked onto Sonic the Hedgehog 1 because they believed fans wouldn't enjoy trekking the more linear level structure with his mechanics. In later years, Game Mods inserting Knuckles (and multiple other characters) into Sonic 1 became a reality due to fans. Amusingly, Stealth, the person responsible for the first proper Knuckles in Sonic 1 hack, also worked on the 2013 mobile port of Sonic 1, which officially adds him and Tails as playable characters.
Unsure about the four entries above, as they are only troping What Could Have Been.
  • Crustle from Pokémon resembles the exploding Iwamodoki badnik in Lava Reef Zone. While a hermit crab monster isn't uncommon, what clinches the connection is that both use prism-shaped rocks as shells.
These characters may be based on the same concept, but they look very different, so I'm not sure
  • By locking on a Sonic 2 cartridge with Sonic & Knuckles, Sonic 2 turns into Knuckles the Echidna in Sonic the Hedgehog 2. In the film canon, Knuckles makes his debut in the second film.
A bit of a stretch?

Here's my take on these entries per game:

  • Sonic 1: Remove all but the about the japanese commercial and the Death Egg.
  • Sonic 2: Remove the entry
  • Sonic 3: Keep the prototype entries, cut the rest.

The ones for That '70s Show and the Spider-Man Trilogy could be hindsight, but for those works instead. The others don't sound valid.

I deleted these from YMMV.Helldivers, as I recall cleanups saying the moment making it Harsher must be ongoing.

  • Harsher in Hindsight
    • In Helldiver 2, which came out on February of 2024, the terminids have broken out of factory-farms established on their own home planets by humanity, causing Super Earth to indiscriminately bomb the entire species, this just so happens to be a popular interpretation of the 2023-2024 Israel-Palestine conflict in Gaza.
      • Does not help that the terminids are used to harvest a source of oil for Super Earth.
    • In the first game, Super Earth declares war on the Cyborgs/Automatons because of a terrorist attack which killed thousands of civilians... according to Super Earth. Story bits through the game suggests the attack only killed like 8 civilians, was not caused by anyone affiliated with the Cyborg nation and even implied to have been an inside job for the sake of having a war. Any citizen on the internet qestioning the official story is put down as a "Cyborg sympathizer" or "Hippie" and a politician openly boasts his desire to have any such citizen executed. Harkening back to conspiracy theories surrounding 9/11 and... a second, popular interpretation of the 2023-2024 Israel-Palestine "War" in Gaza.
      • The Illuminate have also been targetted by Super Earth because, officially, they have a powerful nano-fusion device that could generate enough power destroy a planet easily. In other words, a Weapon of Mass Destruction. They did not, Super Earth simply felt threatened by a species they were forced to accept as intellectual equals. This sort of "War on terror" politics and deception is the clear focus of the games satire but has been brought up into public conciousness yet again.... due to popular interpretations of the 2023-2024 Israel-Palestine "War" in Gaza.

Also, it seems the in-work things are too broad to single out that as the thing making it so.

Any second thoughts?

[up] Those examples just feel like shoehorning since they don't seem particularly related to said conflict. That plus ROCEJ and I think they deserve to stay cut.

Clone High S1E09 "Raisin the Stakes: A Rock Opera in Three Acts"

  • Hilarious in Hindsight
    • A small, magical creature who takes our human hero on an epic quest to find a princess, only to shock him by revealing herself to be said (humanoid) princess in disguise the whole time. Are we talking about Geldamore or Midna?
    • Principal Scudworth's obsession with building a wa- er, fence.

I'm not sure about the first one (I suspect it's Fan Myopia but I'd assume the Zelda example is more likely to be known than the Clone High one) but the second one feels like a Trump shoehorn, since that whole fence thing was a parody of dictator tropes that aren't Trump-exclusive.

I do some cleanup and then I enjoy shows you probably think are cringe.

Re: Galko-chan

Okay, here's my Galko/Harsher rewrite:

  • Harsher in Hindsight: The series' premise of adolescence sexuality - with the cast consisting of underage, (mostly) female characters talking about sex, periods, and other bodily functions - becomes significantly more difficult to watch when, on December 20, 2021, author Kenya Suzuki was arrested for suspicion of possessing child pornography that he imported from Germany, prompting the manga to get axed. Other factors, like Galko interacting with prepubescent boys and the pin-up chapter inserts featuring said female cast, also contributed to this.

[up]x3 Been a while since I've seen that episode but comparing Scudworth to Trump makes no sense. A wall was built, but any similarities are superficial.

[up][up][up] Protip; Hindsight entries that describe a couple of similarities and then ask "Are we talking about [work the example is on] or [work the example links to]?" are usually cases of Fan Myopia, especially when there's potholes involved for the latter work.
