Go To

The Hindsight tropes, Hilarious in Hindsight, Harsher in Hindsight, and Heartwarming in Hindsight, are among the most misused Audience Reaction tropes on this site. Many people don't understand that the tropes require more than just "This happened, so that happened", and end up adding examples which either lack connection or the substance that makes them funny/serious/not-so-funny/heartwarming. Some of them may be suited better for other tropes (ex: Life Imitates Art), while some may not belong on TV Tropes at all (such as ones involving politicians, due to Rule of Cautious Editing Judgment).

Please report any Hindsight example that you feel are questionable, and we'll analyze them to see if they are actually examples or not.

Remember that the Hindsight tropes are Audience Reactions. That means if an example under review discusses significant fan response pointing out the hindsight, the example can't be cut solely for being too tenuous for this thread.

    Common NOT in Hindsight examples
  • Creator's character/portrayal dies in work and then creator dies in real life, unless their fictional death is closely similar to their real one (such as Billy Bob Joe portraying a character who dies from pancreatic cancer, then Billy Bob dies from pancreatic cancer himself)
  • Mundane word related to something terrible (such as "corona" or "Epstein") unless there's more to the connection (such as someone named "Corona" having the flu)
  • Creator appears in work then becomes more controversial later on.
  • A common event (such as a typical natural disaster) happens in work, then happens in real life (unless they are closely similar, such as the event happening to the same area in both reality and fiction around the same time) For once, not everything related to disease has to do with COVID-19, not everything related to racism and Police Brutality has to do with George Floyd and Black Lives Matter, and not everything related to sexual abuse has to do with #MeToo.
  • A common/generic concept was used in this work and then later reused in that work (too loose for a connection, unless the concept is so unique it's identified with the work)
  • Two actors appear together then do so in another work
  • Hindsight examples involving recent events, due to them often being shoehorns. Specifically:
    • COVID-19 examples, before 75% of the population has returned to normal
    • George Floyd/2020 Black Lives Matter examples, before protests have declined
  • Examples which fall guilty of Older Than They Think, such as "Make X Great Again" slogans. Aside from violating the ROCEJ, this slogan has been in use since the 1940s.
  • Characters using slurs which are treated as annoying at worst in the work, but is now harsher due to how severe the slur is made now. Discrimination has always existed with that slur. (May qualify for Values Dissonance if work is at least 20 years old.)

Note: As of January 2022, "Funny Aneurysm" Moment is no longer separate from Harsher in Hindsight.
  • The former redirects to the latter and all wicks to the former (with the exception of ones on archive pages and the YMMV Redirects index) must either be moved to the latter (if they're valid) or removed (if they're invalid).
  • The subpages for the former are still accessible from this page. After a subpage for "Funny Aneurysm" Moment has been completely cleaned up, turn it into a redirect to the Harsher in Hindsight subpage for the same medium to preserve inbounds.

Just had a look at the Hindsight pages for DC Animated Universe. Just on a cursory glance, it looks like both DC Animated Universe and DC Animated Universe could use some attention. If what I found in Superman's YMMV page is any indication, the YMMV pages for the respective series in the franchise might need cleanup, too.

Bringing up the following examples from TV Trash:

  • "Funny Aneurysm" Moment:
    • After the infamous "Disney Scene" in "Road to the Multiverse", he declares that he would quit the review then and there, but, "unlike the Miami Heat, I DON'T QUIT IN THE FOURTH QUARTER". One year later, the Miami Heat actually WON the NBA Finals. While it may be Hilarious in Hindsight, keep in mind, Chris is a Dallas Mavericks fan. And guess what team (successfully) battled the Miami Heat in the 2011 Finals?
    • To drive this home even further, in his Allen Gregory Review, he did end up quitting because he found the show even more offensive. In the middle of the fourth episode, no less!
    • He is critical of Studio 60 on the Sunset Strip because Aaron Sorkin seems to hammer in the supposed message that NBC and SNL suck, even stating that he hates that part of the show despite hating NBC for his own reasons. A year and a half later, it was revealed the he hated NBC because ALF, his favorite show from childhood, was Screwed by the Network, and the shows sudden ending caused him to swear off watching anything on NBC.
    • The Orioles moment below could also be considered this, since they eliminated the Texas Rangers (Moore's favorite sports team) in the 2012 playoffs.
    • The gag in his Ren & Stimpy "Adult Party Cartoon" review where he tries to get John Kricfalusi institutionalised is a lot less funny knowing that John K. later revealed to have a mental illness that he self-meditated with alcohol. And it only got worse from there...

  • Harsher in Hindsight: In his Ninja Turtles: The Next Mutation review, he go on an off-screen (yet still audible) rant against Saban stating that the reason why Ninja Turtles fans hate Power Rangers was due to how the turtles were treated in the crossover. In his (re-)review of the series during his TMNT Retrospective, he revealed that this episode caused him to Rage Quit Power Rangers, feeling that Saban did not have respect for the four Ninja Turtles he grew up with during the crossover.

  • Hilarious in Hindsight:
    • After seeing Cop Rock and Sonic Underground Chris states that he might check out Hannah Montana, he later did a review of the show. Even funnier, he actually praised the music in the show.
    • In It's Arbor Day, Charlie Brown, after Peppermint Patty talks about how her team will destroy Charlie Brown's, Chris jokes "I wonder if Joe Girardi does that with the Orioles manager every year." In 2012 the Orioles made the playoffs for the first time in 16 years. Double hilarious in the fact that Yankees eliminated them in a close series.
    • He remarks at the beginning of his 101st episode that The Nostalgia Critic was one of the reviewers that influenced him to start his own web show. This was made when it seemed like the show was cancelled in favor of Demo Reel. Just a month and a half later, Doug Walker announced the revival of The Nostalgia Critic.
      • His TMZ review becomes funnier now that we know that the Nostalgia Critic, a person whom Rowdy admirers, hates TMZ as much as Rowdy does, if not more so.
    • In his review of "Turnabout Intruder", he calls the show's creator Gene Roddenberry sexist. In May 2013, one of the producers of Star Trek Into Darkness admitted a scene in the film came off as sexist.
    • His Glee Season 3 review ends with him hoping that Glee doesn't do their version of the Harlam Shake in Season 4... which they would later do.
    • His review of The Garfield Show narrowly averts this. It begins with the him and the Comic Strip Critic (A Cleveland Indians fans) watching a Rangers-Indians game. The two teams nearly were the two wildcards in the American League, but the Rangers ended up losing the 163rd game and failed to make the playoffs.
    • In early Mr. Enter reviews, he would cite brief references from TV Trash. Now it's often the other way around with Rowdy being influenced by Mr. Enter's videos and even making reference towards certain videos every now and then.
Rowdy: (From his ICarly review) "I wish I didn't have to steal a line from Mr. Enter but (Lightly Shouting) POINTING OUT YOUR PROBLEMS DOES NOT MAKE THEM GO AWAY".

Ok. Lets go through these one by one.

Funny Aneurysm Moment:

1. Extreme stretch. cut.

2. That isn't hindsight in the slightest. Cut.

3. It seems like a sports shoehorn, as i'm already seeing a lot of "X beat his favorite sporps team." Cut.

4. Possibly keep.

Harsher In Hindsight:

5. Not hindsight.

Hilarious In Hindsight:

6. Ok, that could count. I see that.

7. Seems like another sports shoehorn. Cut.

8. Yes, but he just said they influenced him, not "Rest in peace" or anything like that. Cut.

8B. Seems like a shoehorn. If i'm reading it correctly, it's "X was inspired by Y, and X and Y both hate TMZ." Cut.

9. Different works in the same franchise. Cut.

10. That one can stay.

11. You can't play with YMMV, then it's just not happening. Cut maybe?

12. On the fence, leaning towards cut.

Ok bitch it's Weezer and it's Weezy

As for the V for Vendetta mentioned a pair of days ago, I agree that "a virus in 2020" makes a stronger case than the generic plague. I know that people like to mention coronavirus at each time they can shoehorn it, but let's not fall to the other extreme of blindly rejecting every mention to it just because it's coronavirus.

This was just added to FunnyAneurysmMoment.South Park:

  • In "The Red Badge of Gayness", Cartman tries to win a bet with Stan and Kyle by turning the town's Civil War reenactment into a real Civil War, which includes leading his troops to storm Washington, D.C. and make President Clinton surrender to the Confederacy. Not so funny 22 years later, when supporters of President Trump, which include neo-Confederates, violently stormed the U.S. Capitol in an attempted coup.

I do some cleanup and then I enjoy shows you probably think are cringe.

[up] ROCEJ violation? IDK, it's very complex. Though it's stated that Trump should not be used in any trope example.

[down] sorry. double thoughts it was.

[up] I think it might be too, but I'm more wondering if it's a shoehorn. If it is eerily similar to the Capitol riot then it could count for me, but from what I remember it's just a standard "storming Washington DC" kind of plot. Plus in this case I think they storm the White House. I'm not sure if the "no Trump in trope examples" thing counts unless it's speaking on his policies being good or bad, since his administration is over he's exempt from the recency clause.

Also not to expose you but I love the editing from "ROCEJ, definitely cut" to "I think it's ROCEJ" to "ROCEJ? I'm not sure" because that's basically my mood coming across examples like this.

Actually, it's better to just cut out the Trump supporters part, since that part violates ROCEJ.

Then you should cut the example.

Examples dealing with political figures, unless if the work is based on them and an uncontroversial subject, should be cut.

Though the hindsight, minus political figures, could be worthy... (could be flimsy)

I'm currently going through the YMMV page for Lazy Town.

OK, from YMMV.Lazy Town

  • Harsher in Hindsight:
    • "LazyTown Forever", a fandom passion project that features the vocals of Chloe Lang and is produced by the show's musical producer, ends with a sample from "The First Day of Summer" of Robbie Rotten saying "I never thought I would say this...but I really....REALLY....miss those guys." Already quite bittersweet on its own, it takes on a whole new meaning after the death of Stefansson in August 2018. Actor Mortality
  • Hilarious in Hindsight:

EDIT: Cut one out, because I felt like it was valid

[up] Both of those are pretty lousy and neither are even hindsight for the work in question (the first is a fanwork, the second is the quote that's whatever in hindsight). "Don't let your kids watch it" isn't an uncommon phrase either.

Bringing up the following examples from Hilarious in Hindsight:

  • The poem For Heidi with Blue Hair by Fleur Adcock seems uncomfortable now considering it mentions "twittering", which to today's audiences, has different connotations than it did at the time of publishing...
  • Longfellow's The Jewish Cemetery at Newport which discusses the plight of the Jews, ends with the stanza "But ah! what once has been shall be no more! / The groaning earth in travail and in pain / Brings forth its races, but does not restore, / And the dead nations never rise again." He did not foresee the creation of the modern State of Israel.
  • In the short and little-known Shel Silverstein poem "Description", one character insist that God is black, another that God is female. It becomes this after "I Met God, She's Black became a popular slogan for T-shirts.

This is on Aquaman (2018) under Harsher in Hindsight:

  • Seeing Amber Heard play Aquaman's loving consort (at the end of the movie) can be a lot harder to watch after a tape emerged where Heard admitted that she physically and verbally abused her husband at the time, Johnny Depp.

I've cut it, with a link to this thread.

Should I do the same with these examples on Edward Scissorhands:

  • Edward repeatedly being mistaken for hurting Kim and others, as well as being falsely accused of rape and the entire neighbourhood pretty much turning their backs on him (besides Kim and Peg), is this after Johnny Depp was accused of abusing his wife Amber Heard, which the public initially believed. Especially as it eventually turned out that Amber was the one abusing Johnny. Just like Edward, Johnny himself was falsely accused of something he didn't do.
  • Joyce kicking her own dog in a literal Kick the Dog moment becomes this after Johnny Depp and Amber Heard were arrested for illegally smuggling their dogs in Australia. To make matters worse, not only did Johnny took most of the blame but in the midst of evidence coming out that proved Amber was the one abusing Johnny, evidence also came out that it was in fact Amber's idea to smuggle the dogs in Australia which was something Johnny didn't want to do and was ultimately forced to do so. It's safe to say that Joyce is pretty much Amber in a nutshell.

The first one might count if it can be rewritten to just talk about the fact Johnny got into abuse controversy, without definitively saying that he was or wasn't abusive. Second one feels like a reach to vilify the two of them.
