Per Ask The Tropers, this thread will be used to reduce the number of old, poorly written drafts on the Trope Launch Pad. We don't want to discuss on the drafts themselves because that will bump them and mix them with active proposals.
Sandbox for the project: Trope Launch Pad Discard Project
Sandbox for discarded drafts but viable ideas: Trope Idea Salvage Yard
The first sandbox page above contains drafts proposed in the thread that are still pending and drafts that we've decided to leave alone, either with no action or a bump.
The second sandbox page is for awful drafts but viable ideas. According to moderators, badly written but interesting/tropeworthy drafts should remain on the TLP. Rather than allow low-effort drafts to clog TLP, though, the salvage yard was opened to keep just the ideas behind them, in one place.
On this thread, we will mention which drafts we think are unworkable, add enough bombs, and discard (nuke) them. Discarding requires at least 5 bombs. Among the features of "unworkable" drafts:
- There have been no edits for a very long time, or at all
- The draft is low-effort, containing atrocious spelling and grammar and/or little to no examples, e.g. NEVER saw THAT coming (!), Nut-Chuks
- The draft was seemingly created so the sponsor could complain
- The topic is People Sit on Chairs, Too Rare to Trope, a search query created by mistake, etc. and therefore not tropeworthy
- The topic is already sufficiently covered by one or more tropes or is a duplicate of a better-written TLP draft
- The draft is problematic in other ways, such being closely tied to a page that has been historically problematic, e.g. Fetish Fuel, Complete Monster
- There's no discussion currently occurring in the comments to improve the proposal
If we decide to discard a draft after discussion via this thread, whoever does so must provide the discard reason in the comment section of the draft, for transparency's sake. Those looking at the discards section won't think it was nuked for no reason.
Also, check out the sister project, Trope Adoption Drive, where good drafts put Up for Grabs or abandoned can be grabbed, given a bit more improvement, and launched.

The self-harm Useful Note can be tossed, IMO.
Contains 20% less fat than the leading value brand!I personally think calling the first paragraph of the Self-Harm draft a "how-to" is a bit much — it's just cataloging various ways people harm themselves. This wiki lists uncountable ways to kill someone else, but that doesn't make it particularly instructive.
That's not to say I don't find the repeating and lingering over the minutia more than a bit off-putting, though, in the same way that a lot of Male Gaze or Ms. Fanservice entries go into one-handed typing levels of detail.
That said, the draft itself is just a copy-paste of the Self-Harm trope description. What they're asking seems more like a job for TRS than the TLP, especially considering work isn't actually being done on it; it's just being bumped asking someone else to do the grunt work.
So yeah, I launched it into the sun.

Here's another round of mostly discard fodder.
-
Canon Blast is "the means through which Word of God is declared". -
Dark Is Hammy feels to me like a very specific flavor of Evil Is Hammy. It could be worth its own trope, but the draft's sponsor immediately abandoned it, didn't even try to format the examples correctly, and gave it a very sparse description. Yard or just nuke? - Hazing the New Guy, despite the name, is not the sort of hazing that college freshmen have to endure; it's actually "Take That, Replacement Scrappy". I'm not sure what we should do with it, but it needs a lot of work if it's to be launched.
-
Hold Your Head Up High is Graceful Loser. The draft has no examples and was immediately abandoned by its sponsor (perhaps because nobody commented on it). -
Manipulative Prodigy: The laconic describes it as "A cross between the Manipulative Bastard and the Child Prodigy". In addition to its questionable tropeworthiness, the draft has been abandoned since August of 2011, and it has a lot of zero-context examples. - "No Save" Attack is prime Yard fodder. It only has one example (plus one general example) and hasn't been touched since the day it was posted, but it seems like it could be a legitimate trope once it gets a name more distinct from No Saving Throw.
-
People Are The Real Enemy is Beware the Living. -
Refute and Repeat Impression is "I Resemble That Remark!, but for impressions of people". -
Screw The Rules, I'm In Charge is Screw the Rules, I Make Them!. -
Shaggy Dog Dungeon has a three sentence description, is drowning in Walkthrough Mode, and doesn't look very tropeworthy. -
StoryIsKing: This draft is about a creator philosophy. The person who posted it also posted this, which is the opposite, but then discarded it after seeing a suggestion to merge them into a sliding scale. The thing is, I feel like Story Is King would immediately become a gushing magnet if launched, John Kricfalusi School of Thought would become a complaining magnet, and the sliding scale would have both problems. I haven't found a "Sliding Scale of Style vs. Substance" draft yet, but when I do, I'll be sure to post it here. - Toss the Treasure, Treasure the Person is "a Friend-or-Idol Decision comes up, and the hero makes the expected choice of saving their friend instead of the idol".

Going back to the Self Harm page for a minute, my concern was less that it is a how-two guide, and more that it may become one.
Currently Working On: Incorruptible Pure PurenessAnyway, I'll ask for the second time.
Basara-Kun, please add reasons when you're discarding a draft. You're obviously reading this thread and discarding tropes that are brought up here; so please just add a reason.
Edited by WarJay77 on Mar 5th 2020 at 5:36:46 AM
Currently Working On: Incorruptible Pure PurenessSeconding War Jay — as I've said before, we need those reasons for accountability. Without reasons ready and available right there on the drafts to point to, we could get in trouble for rogue-discarding.
If not for this anchor I'd be dancing between the stars. At least I can try to write better vampire stories than Twilight.Shaggy Dog Dungeon has a bad title and stubby walkthrough-y description, but do we have a trope for like... Easy Level Trick/Short Level except you're given the option to wander around the extraneous area if you want, which will provide more fights/exploration/lore/loot?
I'm bringing up Sound Shift Reverb because most of the comments were between the sponser and another troper on whether or not it was a duplicate or super/subtrope to Diegetic Switch, with the most recent comment being from a different troper saying they also don't see the distinction. It has five hats, three bombs.
Jawbreakers on sale for 99¢Agree with Tabs on Shaggy Dog Dungeon; that's the only real trope I can think of out of that mess, and even then is it really common enough to trope...?
Discarded Story Is King (Gushing magnet, also kinda meaningless).
I can see Hazing the New Guy, Toss The Treasure, and No Save attack as being Yard candidates, if there's enough examples to make them viable. (Though honestly, I'm not too sure about Hazing because the trope seems to make assumptions on the writers' motives for making a new character that way, which gets messy fast).
I guess I could see Shaggy Dog Dungeon being reworked into something like "Deceptively Short Level", but I'm also concerned about the volume of examples. There's no real harm in yarding it, is there?
Anyway, I yarded No Save Attack, so feel free to bomb it.

So on the Mothball list...
Can Heart Motifs be safely merge with Heart Symbol? Like make a sentence or two about heart motifs on that trope?
Macron's notesProbably.
Currently Working On: Incorruptible Pure PurenessAbout Shaggy Dog Dungeon, I added the fifth bomb, anyone against discarding it?
Cool w/ me.
Currently Working On: Incorruptible Pure PurenessGo ahead.
Heart Motifs - Actually, no?
Heart Symbol is "❤ means heart", like "💀 = Death", but more direct?
It's not about a whole Motif?
Maybe it's so used that it's Omnipresent...

Disambig Needed: Help with those issues! tvtropes.org/pmwiki/posts.php?discussion=13324299140A37493800&page=24#comment-576Most of Heart Symbol's examples use it as a character or work motif and I don't think its worth keeping the motif and the symbol itself seperate.
Edited by MacronNotes on Mar 9th 2020 at 8:20:12 AM
Macron's notesI got some covered drafts:
-
Rosebud: Trope Namer Syndrome + ZC Es; I believe anything that Deathbed Confession and Dying Clue don't cover are covered by the better-developed Last Regrets. -
Snake Swing: Abandoned stub that Snakework Construction has covered. -
Battlizers are for Red Rangers Only: Covered by Protagonist Powerup Privileges. -
Somewhere that's Green: Covered by "Somewhere" Song. -
The period of Myths: Just seems like The Time of Myths but with a timestamp (TSBMS); also, no real examples. -
Winston Smith went to Eton: Bad Trope Namer + I Am Very British covers "British characters have the posh RP accent". -
Gordon is Batman's Hero: I actually thought from the name that it would be covered by The Real Heroes, but it's actually covered by The Knights Who Say "Squee!".
Also, bad-shape drafts:
- I Want Parkman: Bad Trope Namer, abandoned stub.
- Finger Twiddling: More of a brainstorming page than an actual TLP. FWIW, the first possibility is covered by Thinking Tic.
Edited by Synchronicity on Mar 9th 2020 at 5:31:52 AM
Snake Swing is a poor draft, but it's not Snakework Construction; that one is about snakes being used purposefully as architecture; this is when people accidentally grab onto a snake when swinging on vines.
Currently Working On: Incorruptible Pure PurenessThat Finger Twiddling TLP is an artifact from an old TRS thread where split that page into actual tropes. It doesnt have a purpose anymore and isnt written as a properdraft so it can be safely discarded
Edited by MacronNotes on Mar 9th 2020 at 3:02:00 PM
Macron's notesAh, my bad, I misread the description. A line about it in Vine Swing may help or something like Wild Animal Reveal if we don't have something like that.
So, I want to bring some drafts into discussion here.
-
Asteroids do not Concern me, Admiral: Unedited stub, and I agree that this is already covered by a wide array of tropes. Canadian Lifeboat: "When the United States becomes a dystopia, the main characters or background characters flee to safety in Canada." Very low-effort draft and no example has context. Is this common enough in media to warrant its own trope?-
Casually Mentioned Issue: Abandoned stub with no examples. -
The Criminals are in Charge: Abandoned draft that tried to be a super trope for criminals getting away with their crimes. Anyone thinks this might be workable? -
Diegetic Commercial Break: Abandoned draft, and seems to be simply lampshading about commercial breaks. -
Dramatic Colission: Abandoned stub. -
Dumb and Dadder: Unedited stub that doesn't seem to know what is trying to trope. -
Eat my Emotions: Unedited stub that is described as two different tropes together...my favorites. All examples are just lines of dialog. -
Eating Pine Cones: "Humor derived from a character eating a pine cone." This draft is abandoned, and seems too specific. -
Floor Based Power-up: Unedited stub with no examples. -
That Sounds Sweet...Wait: Unedited stub, and is probably already covered by Bait-and-Switch Comment.
Edited by ElBuenCuate on Jun 13th 2020 at 5:35:12 AM
For Canadian Lifeboat, I did read a story where the characters were trying to get to Alaska to avoid their dystopian life in SoCal. Dunno if it's the same thing, but hey.
Currently Working On: Incorruptible Pure PurenessOn that note, I'm getting back to the Mothball list:
- Fad Starter [Trivia: Pichu_Kun was working on this for a while, but progress has stagnated; it's Up For Grabs at this point.
- Fake Orgasm: No Mothball reason. I think it's definitely a trope and it has 9 hats, so someone interested could easily save it.
- Fantastic Plagiarism: A viable idea, and the draft just needs some TLC.
- Feed the Monster: Since being mothballed, it was picked up by Xfllo and the recent activity dates back to December.
- Finishing with a flourish: No mothball reason. It's an abandoned draft and the concept might be covered by Mundane Made Awesome, but I'm not sure.
- The First Supers: No mothball reason. The examples seem all over the place, but the actual idea seems workable, and it has 5 hats.
- Five Victim Ensemble: No mothball reason. It's an ensemble trope, so you know it's good. I'm concerned people will use it as a shoehorn magnet, and some of the examples lack context.
- Forbidden Trope: Kept due to the idea being workable; this sounds like a good Yard candidate.
- Fortune Telling Tropes: Has had recent discussion, as recent as Jan 27th; so it really shouldn't be here anymore.
- Furnace Execution: The unresolved question is if this is different from Cooked To Death; we need to figure that out.
- The Generic White-Collar Office Job: I feel like this should just be merged with the current White Collar Worker trope, personally; it's a fuzzy distinction and is mostly covered by the existing trope.

Currently Working On: Incorruptible Pure Pureness
Between Otherworldly and Sexually Ambiguous; No Biological Sex; Non-Humans Lack Attributes; and the aforementioned Non-Human Non-Binary, I think we already have Aliens Without Genitals covered.
If not for this anchor I'd be dancing between the stars. At least I can try to write better vampire stories than Twilight.
