Do you have trouble remembering the difference between Deathbringer the Adorable and Fluffy the Terrible?
Do you have trouble recognizing when you've written a Zero-Context Example?
Not sure if you really have a Badass Bookworm or just a guy who likes to read?
Well, this is the thread for you. We're here to help you will all the finer points of example writing. If you have any questions, we can answer them. Don't be afraid. We don't bite. We all just want to make the wiki a better place for everyone.
Useful Tips:
- Make sure that the example makes sense to both people who don't know the work AND don't know the trope.
- Wrong: The Mentor: Kevin is this to Bob in the first episode.
- Right: The Mentor: Kevin takes Bob under his wing in the first episode and teaches him the ropes of being a were-chinchilla.
- Never just put the trope title and leave it at that.
- Wrong: Badass Adorable
- Right: Badass Adorable: Xavier, the group's cute little mascot, defeats three raging elephants with both hands tied behind his back using only an uncooked spaghetti noodle.
- When is normally far less important than How.
- A character name is not an explanation.
- Wrong: Full Moon Silhouette: Diana
- Right: Full Moon Silhouette: At the end of her transformation sequence into Moon Princess Misty, Diana is shown flying across the full moon riding a rutabaga.
Other Resources:
For best results, please include why you think an example is iffy in your first post.
Also, many oft-misused tropes/topics have their own threads, such as Surprisingly Realistic Outcome (here) and Fan-Preferred Couple (here). Tropers are better able to give feedback on examples you bring up to specific threads.
For cleaning up examples of Complete Monster and Magnificent Bastard, you must use their dedicated threads: Complete Monster Cleanup, Magnificent Bastard Cleanup.

Thinking about adding Quake/Daisy Johnson as an example of Dishing Out Dirt. Do you think she qualifies.
Ok I'll remove some unnecessary spaces and the last sentence.
If her powers are earth based, I think that qualifies for this trope.

“What is that? It's The Unknown!”~Walk In Shadows, I've wanted to add those to Catching the Speedster, but upon re-reading the description I realized I've took it too literally and these don't fit. Do I understand correctly that the trope actually means "A character with Super-Speed gets defeated by one without it"?
- Sonic X: In Episode 24, Sonic damages Eggman's E-88 robot, but one of its chips happens to fall into his ear, causing him to run indefinitely and being unable to stop. Until the robot is destroyed, the heroes try different ways to catch Sonic, like attaching a hellium balloon to him, leading him into a mud trap, or trapping him in a hamster wheel.
- Kamen Rider Kabuto: The shapeshifting monsters Worms in their true form move at the speed close to Time Stands Still. To combat them, the organization ZECT has developed a series of Rider Systems that can fight at the same speed. Stronger Worms and Rider power-ups have greater speeds, resulting in a bit of Lensman Arms Race.
- Wile E. Coyote and the Road Runner: The main premise of the cartoons, Wile E. Coyote tries to catch the incredibly fast Road Runner for dinner using various ACME-made traps and gadgets and ends only injuring himself every time.
Pretty much. They don't have to literally "catch" them, as long as they can overpower them.
@Smashman: Just FYI, it's useful in this thread to describe why you think something might or might not qualify as an example of the trope, rather than just saying "Hey is X from Y an example?" and leaving it at that. (Imagine someone randomly asking you "Hey, do you think Strawberry Crepe Cookie is an example of Evil Brit?" and you'll see why. unless you happen to play that game in which case this demonstration is gonna fall completely flat)

Trouble Cube continues to be a general-purpose forum for those who desire such a thing. Can there be a Significant Name Overlap if the characters live in completely different circles but fulfill similar roles? #Killstagram has two seasons with different stories, but they both have a prominent character named Jia who means the world to the protagonist but doesn't stay to the end. In the first season, Jia is Remi's best friend who abandons her after she gets a bad case of Stockholm Syndrome for the killer. In the second, Jia is Sarang's five-year-old daughter who was Dead All Along by Sarang's own hands.
I think that's Recurring Element.
Can someone tell me whether a buzzsaw goes on Chainsaw Good or Deadly Disc? Chainsaw Good's description has "circular saws/buzzsaws" as a blue link to Deadly Disc, while Deadly Disc's description has "saw blades" as a blue link to Chainsaw Good.
"Squid has to go to market. He's had to go to market for as long as he's sucked water."Well Deadly Disc (strange pothole aside) does include saw blades in its description, so I'd go with that one.
I didn't choose the troping life, the troping life chose meYes, but so does Chainsaw Good. That's my issue, they both include them in their descriptions, but blue link them to each other.
"Squid has to go to market. He's had to go to market for as long as he's sucked water."No, Chainsaw Good brings them up later in the description (the "See also" paraagraph) when it discusses the similar tropes, meaning Deadly Disc is seen as a separate, but related, trope.
I didn't choose the troping life, the troping life chose meDeadly Disc is a throwing object. So the question is if the buzzsaw is stationary or being thrown.
~Bubblepig : Did you see my earlier reply to you?
~Twiddler Yeah I did, but back then I don't know what to do with it before. Sorry about that.

“What is that? It's The Unknown!”BeyondTheImpossible.Video Games contains a general example. Is it an example? If so, where can it go?
- This is the entire point of Tool-Assisted Speedruns, where someone effectively writes a script that sends inputs to the game with frame-perfect precision. Since this allows for the Player Character to have perfect movements, do button combinations that are physically impossible for a human (such as pushing up and down at the same time or pushing buttons faster than the physical button could be pushed), have multiple characters moving in perfect harmony, and even manipulate the game's random-number generation by outright creating outcomes by setting up perfect scenarios, they lead to some outright impossible stunts like never missing, wriggling through solid walls, making enemies do specific things, wrong-warping or triggering Event Flags, glitching items into the inventory, or always getting critical hits while the enemies always miss. Starting up Final Fantasy, doing no leveling up outside of mandatory battles, and defeating Chaos with a single White Mage after a little over an hour of gameplay by intimidating it into running from the battle sounds like a fever dream, but a TAS can do it.
It's not even necessarily impossible if the TAS is doing it. It's either just improbable or impossible for a human. On top of that, it's a stealth RL example because it's real computers playing the games.

The trope depends on “the story’s internal logic”. TASes happen in Real Life, which isn’t a story.
The question at hand is if the example is general (under Examples Are Not General), and I contend that it is general and should be cut on those grounds.
I didn't choose the troping life, the troping life chose meCan Force Feeding be wicked to a work if the feeding in question is self-inflicted?
Number 1 CGI Fireman Sam defenderHow and why exactly would one go about force-feeding oneself?
Trouble Cube continues to be a general-purpose forum for those who desire such a thing.I guess one could force feed themselves to the point of injury. Perhaps if you had a hypothetical example we could better judge if it fits.

I didn't choose the troping life, the troping life chose meDoes it still count as Character Customization if you can only choose between a few premade avatars?
"Rarity, are you okay? We gotta get you and your friends outta here soon!"Does Alcoholic Parent go in the offspring's section or the parent's section?
If my post doesn't mention a giant flying sperm whale with oversized teeth and lionfish fins for flippers, it just isn't worth reading. So I was looking at the trivia page of Brother Bear and I noticed that it had Creator Killer listed on it. Here's the example:
- Creator Killer: Unlike Mulan and Lilo & Stitch, Brother Bear ended up being a critical disappointment for Walt Disney Feature Animation's Florida studio at Disney-MGM Studios (today Disney's Hollywood Studios). The Floridian studio was shut down a few months after the movie's release as Disney began to turn to computer-animated films. It would also prove to be Disney's last commercially successful traditional animated film prior to their decision to switch to CGI animation for future films as the next one would prove to be their last traditionally animated film until five years later.
Now maybe the entry could be rewritten, but I don't think the example is very valid. First off, it says unlike Mulan and Lilo and Stitch, but when I looked at the box office numbers, Brother Bear had a budget of $46 million and it made back $250 million. Mulan made back more than $304 million on a $90 million budget. Lilo and Stitch made more than $273 million on a budget of $80 million. Unless I'm an idiot or not looking at things well, when comparing the movies box office to its budget, Brother Bear did pretty well.
The way I see it, the references to Mulan and Lilo and Stitch don't really add much to the entry, especially since when Brother Bear came out, it had been more than five years since Mulan came out. At least Stitch came out a year before Brother Bear. Should I just leave the entry alone, or would it be OK to remove the first part?
It's fine, but I still see Speed Sex irrelevant. It being uncomfortable is the point and how long it lasts is an unnecessary comment. Also be mindful of spaces.
