Do you have trouble remembering the difference between Deathbringer the Adorable and Fluffy the Terrible?

Do you have trouble recognizing when you've written a Zero-Context Example?

Not sure if you really have a Badass Bookworm or just a guy who likes to read?

Well, this is the thread for you. We're here to help you will all the finer points of example writing. If you have any questions, we can answer them. Don't be afraid. We don't bite. We all just want to make the wiki a better place for everyone.

Useful Tips:

  • Make sure that the example makes sense to both people who don't know the work AND don't know the trope.
    • Wrong: The Mentor: Kevin is this to Bob in the first episode.
    • Right: The Mentor: Kevin takes Bob under his wing in the first episode and teaches him the ropes of being a were-chinchilla.
  • Never just put the trope title and leave it at that.
    • Wrong: Badass Adorable
    • Right: Badass Adorable: Xavier, the group's cute little mascot, defeats three raging elephants with both hands tied behind his back using only an uncooked spaghetti noodle.
  • When is normally far less important than How.
    • Wrong: Big Bad: Of the first season.
    • Right: Big Bad: The heroes have to defeat the Mushroom Man lest the entirety of Candy Land's caramel supply be turned into fungus.
  • A character name is not an explanation.

Found this in Trivia.Rugrats.

  • Screwed by the Network:
    • The show suffered this as part of Executive Meddling; Nickelodeon insisted the show would continue after The Rugrats Movie and even its sequel. This resulted in Dil and Kimi being brought into the show after those films were released. Longtime viewers were annoyed by them and tuned out.
    • Then came Klasky-Csupo's contractual disagreement with Nickelodeon. When new management came into Nickelodeon, and their contract was about to expire, neither of them could agree on a price to produce Rugrats and their other Nicktoons. After this, Nickelodeon had effectively cancelled Rugrats and the rest of their other shows.
    • On CBS, the show suffered this under their thumb. It premiered on their Saturday morning block in February 2003, but only stayed on for the next five months; only episodes featuring the not so well-liked Dil and Kimi were shown. It aired by default at 7AM, when its target audience was still asleep, although some stations aired the show in different timeslots; including KPIX in San Francisco, which aired it in the afternoon at 3:30PM; KIRO in Seattle, which aired it at 5AM on Sunday mornings, when absolutely no one would be awake; and WIVB in Buffalo, New York, which aired it at 8AM, directly against Nickelodeon's Rugrats broadcast.

The first example is defiantly misuse, the second I'm not sure about since it's behind the scenes drama rather than scheduling, and the third is not misuse at all, although the mention of Dil and Kimi is shoehorned into the example for whatever reason.

From Cars 2:

  • A Nazi by Any Other Name: Professor Zundapp, the Lemons and their boss, Sir Miles Axelrod. Just pretend that alternate fuel for cars is to oil what anyone or anything non-Aryan was to Nazism.

This looks like a stretch. The Lemons want alternative fuel gone because it's a threat to their oil businesses, which give them status and money, and not because they view themselves as something like "the Oil Master Race". The only thing they really have in common with the Nazis is that they're willing to commit crimes to become more powerful.

Reposting from the previous page:

From Characters. One Piece Heavenly Demon Donquixote Doflamingo:

  • Kick the Dog:
    • He forced Atmos to murder his own crewmates, with Doflamingo cackling all the way.
    • Forcing King Riku to gather all the money of his kingdom, only to be used like a puppet to slaughter his own citizens.
    • Forcing Bellamy to kill Luffy to regain his favor (after Bellamy and Luffy had developed a great deal of mutual respect for one another), beating the shit out of him, insulting him to piss off Luffy, and then using him as a Human Shield when Luffy flies into a rage.
    • Really, it says something that the main use of his People Puppets power is to force someone to kill those close to them, and pointless cruelty and sadism have both become defining character traits of his.
    • Generally, most of what he says or does to Law is a practice in Kicking The Dog. Choosing to shoot Law specifically with lead bullets was a cruel reference to the Amber Lead Syndrome he had as a boy, for example. Also, seeing as how it was already a Curbstomp Battle, ripping Law's arm off was also largely unnecessary and savage.note
    • Forcing Viola to work for him by threatening to kill her father even after he had already completely defeated/overthrown him and had no reason to do so.
    • When Viola attacks him to buy time for Luffy's recovery, he easily overpowers her even in his weakened state. Rather than finish her off himself, he takes control of Rebecca so that she will be the one to cut down Viola.
    • Attempting to kill his own crewmates with the Birdcage who are nothing but loyal to him.
    • Something more personal to himself, the setup name for his final attack "16 Sacred Bullets of the Assassin, God Thread" is a mocking reference to a man who was part of the mob that tortured him claiming his sons were shot dead 16 times by Celestial Dragons. Another glimpse to how badly Doffy still wished he could be a Celestial Dragon.

Given that Kick the Dog is for when a villain does meaningless acts of evil, are these valid examples of this trope?

Also, from Justice League (2017):

  • Jerkass Ball: After being reprimanded by Diana for his survivor's guilt, Bruce grabs it by retorting, "Did Steve Trevor tell you that?" While it is implied later that Bruce wanted Diana to step up as the leader of the group, this is still an unnecessary dick move and brings back bad memories of Steve's sacrifice. Unsurprisingly, this pushes Diana's Berserk Button and leads to her shoving Bruce to the crates.

Is this considered a valid example?

This Seasonal Rot entry in YMMV.Codename Kids Next Door seems kind of sketchy to me.

  • Seasonal Rot: Ironically around the time the series began to establish its mythos and continuity, which was about Season 2 and onward for some people, when Flanderization took hold of Numbuhs 3 and 4 despite all the character development everyone got, especially those two despite their Flanderization. Some fans also complained the show began to take itself too seriously, given the humour in many early episodes was the self awareness of the kids antagonising anything standard kids would.

Not sure if this is a Season Rot either. I remember none of the seasons being seen as a extreme dip in quality.

A problem with that trope is "How much backlash do we need for some thing to be considered seasonal rot?(which was what I brought up re: Trails series a few pages back)

Yeah, that doesn't seem like a good fit. It's not the twitter dude's fault that Sonic Boom sucked, and it's not hypocritical if the game didn't exist at the time.

Wanted to acknowledge it in some form (because it's been discussed a lot at the time), but writing about something like that in a neutral way is pretty difficult.

To paraphrase a previous post:

Can Eyepatch of Power apply to a character who's a good fighter who also wears a piece of cloth that covers both of their eyes (e.g. a blindfold)?

Isn't California Doubling specifically for live-action?

For Swiss-Army Superpower:

It's been years since I've watched Invader Zim, but this trope is about one power that can be used in many different ways, and this example is saying that they have a "vast array" of technology, which I'm pretty sure means it's not an actual example since they have different gadgets that can do different things. I also have no idea how the last sentence at all correlates with the trope. On second thought, I'm confused by this whole thing.

From reading the description, Eyepatch of Power is about Fashionable Asymmetry being applied to a character's eyes to make them look cool, so having both eyes be blind would disqualify them for that trope.

Is it still an Actor Allusion if a Harry Potter fanfic gives Snape a line referencing Alan Rickman's role as the Metatron in Dogma? Like the author's note confirms it was because of the actor connection, and it definitely would've been if the actual movies did it, but technically in the fanfic Snape is played by strings of text, not Alan Rickman.

Since Designated Villain is YMMV, it doesn't go in this Objective Trope Subpage, right?

AlasPoorVillain.Film:

  • Sadako Yamamura, the Designated Villain from The Ring series, suffers a lot even before she becomes a villain. She is raped in the novels, lost her mother in both continuities, beaten to death by angry actors, and then she bonded with her evil twin and kills all those who harmed her before, including her own innocent boyfriend, before being tossed down the well by her stepfather.

Cutting that bit then.

From Hyperspace Is a Scary Place, this is an Acid-Trip Dimension, right? Instead of just an Alternate Dimension?

“This is a video recording taken from the Observation decks.”The screen changed. Now they were looking at what the Wanderer crew had seen in their last days. No one, not even Spock, could handle more than a quick glimpse of that view (Kirk had, after a couple of minutes spent staring at the recording back on the Wanderer, spent the next few minutes being violently sick )– a swirling, multicolored mist was how Uhura would later explain it to Christine Chapel, but it was more than that, something for which even she couldn’t find the right words. It was made of light. Light that could think. Could blend in dizzying, nauseating mixes. It was a living thing, that mist, or so it seemed.“If they had to look at that thing 24/7, I don’t think we need to look at any other motives for suicide.” McCoy muttered.

If so, then I need to change it, and maybe ask for Eldritch Dimension to redirect to Acid-Trip Dimension...

Can Super Couple be played with? Because I found this.

  • Arrow certainly tried this with Oliver Queen/Felicity Smoak, who were initially the Fan-Preferred Couple to the initial canon offering of Oliver/Laurel, but over-pushing of this led to Hype Backlash, especially when what made them interesting to shippers in the first place disappeared when they got together. Felicity gradually evolving into one of the most infamous examples of The Scrappy on television didn't help.

The trope page describes it like this. "The supercouple describes those pairings which intrigue and fascinate the public on an intense and obsessive level." Like I don't if that fit the ship or not but as is it reads like an excuse to complain about the ship and not technically true. Like the ship is still incredibly popular. Just look at twitter, Tumblr, and so on for proof. Controversial yes, but still incredibly popular. Again, I don't know if it is well known beyond the primary fanbase. Like say if you didn't know the show would you know them? I don't know. If so it could be listed if it can b played with. So can it be played with?
