Do you have trouble remembering the difference between Deathbringer the Adorable and Fluffy the Terrible?

Do you have trouble recognizing when you've written a Zero-Context Example?

Not sure if you really have a Badass Bookworm or just a guy who likes to read?

Well, this is the thread for you. We're here to help you will all the finer points of example writing. If you have any questions, we can answer them. Don't be afraid. We don't bite. We all just want to make the wiki a better place for everyone.

Useful Tips:

  • Make sure that the example makes sense to both people who don't know the work AND don't know the trope.
    • Wrong: The Mentor: Kevin is this to Bob in the first episode.
    • Right: The Mentor: Kevin takes Bob under his wing in the first episode and teaches him the ropes of being a were-chinchilla.
  • Never just put the trope title and leave it at that.
    • Wrong: Badass Adorable
    • Right: Badass Adorable: Xavier, the group's cute little mascot, defeats three raging elephants with both hands tied behind his back using only an uncooked spaghetti noodle.
  • When is normally far less important than How.
    • Wrong: Big Bad: Of the first season.
    • Right: Big Bad: The heroes have to defeat the Mushroom Man lest the entirety of Candy Land's caramel supply be turned into fungus.
  • A character name is not an explanation.

IIRC, Schala has some sort of notorious (as in, I'm aware of it without knowing much at all about the game) What Happened to the Mouse? thing going on. Not sure how that factors exactly into the issue of character importance, but I think it must somehow.

The first one inserts generic commentary into the real example. The second one is a ZCE.

The YMMV page for Man of Steel has the following Harsher in Hindsight entries.

  • Jonathan Kent had already gotten a lot of hate for telling Clark he was wrong to save his classmates from the bus crash, but then the Supergirl (2015) series made him look even worse, as Kara also gets a family member chewing her out for revealing herself to the world... and not only does Alex have a much more concrete and understandable reason for it, but she completely turns around just by the end of the first episode.
  • Lara worried that the people of Earth would ostracise and kill her son. In Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice that's exactly what happens.
  • Only a month-and-a-half after Man of Steel premiered, the animated film Justice League: The Flashpoint Paradox was released. In that story about history getting altered, what happened to Kal-El was even more horrible than what Lara feared.
  • Superman being forced to snap Zod's neck painted him as a much darker interpretation of the character. Years later, Brightburn would take a darker route.

Do they qualify or not?

From Film.Spider Man Far From Home:

  • Protagonist-Centered Morality: When HYDRA deploys a flying superweapon with the ability to invade individual privacy on a global scale and execute anyone on Earth at any time with no appeal or oversight in Captain America: The Winter Soldier, they must be stopped because they are fascist monsters. When Tony Stark does the exact same thing, he posthumously proclaims himself a hero for it, and no-one contradicts him.

Troper Tropetastic 1995 changed it to:

  • Protagonist-Centered Morality: Played With, as thie comparison just goes on to display the highly different interpretations of justifiable heroism between Captain America and Iron Man that were long established, but when HYDRA deploys a flying superweapon with the ability to invade individual privacy on a global scale and execute anyone on Earth at any time with no appeal or oversight in Captain America: The Winter Soldier, they must be stopped because they are fascist monsters. When Tony Stark does the exact same thing, he posthumously proclaims himself a hero for it, and no-one outright contradicts him. That being said, Spider-Man eventually realises the risk of this drone army and has it self-destruct.

I'm of the opinion that the new version is full of Weasel Words, Natter, and self-argument.

It's pretty simple: Hydra does something and it's unambiguously evil. Stark does something comparable, and nobody treats it as anything but good. Pretty straightforward example of the trope, no need for the Played With or the rest of the wishy-washy natter.

Also, there's no indication that Peter physically destroyed the drones; all he did was execute an order canceling their kill missions.

I'm not certain that this trope applies, but since the examples were terribly long and conversational, I've tried revising them. Are they appropriate to the trope, or should thy be deleted?

  • Omniscient Morality License: The major powers within the Foundation series all acknowledge their limitations, this includes the fact that they aren't omniscient. However, their Angst doesn't stop several groups from deciding that they have the duty to take action and modify the future of the galaxy.
    • The earliest mover/shaker in the series, R. Daneel Olivaw, is actually a nearly-immortal robot, based on Dr Asimov's Three Laws. He understands the concept of the Zeroth Law, but finds it difficult to definitely violate the First Law (prevent harm to a human) in order to maybe obey the Zeroth Law (prevent harm to humanity). In Forward the Foundation, he resigns his public office in favour of Hari Seldon, claiming that he is unable to make government-related decisions without violating one of the Laws.
    • Hari Seldon, having developed a new science — "psychohistory" — that allows him to mathematically predict large-scale future trends. He is initially reluctant to even develop this science, finding it to be "useless for practical problems". However, he gradually changes his mind on the subject and is able to work out a few simple models that allow him limited prescience during Forward the Foundation. It is at this point that he can mathematically prove that the Empire will collapse within a few hundred years. He believes that the collapse of civilization, causing disorder and disaster, would be a bad thing. His one tool, psychohistory, only allows him to make broad guesses given certain starting conditions. So he works out the Seldon Plan; a set of predictions that covers the next thousand years, and he figures out what starting conditions will create a Second Galactic Empire within that time-frame. A second Galactic Empire being seen as better than warfare and disunity.
    • The Second Foundation is an organization that inherited the tools of psychohistory. Their objective is to preserve and expand the Seldon Plan; preserving the civilization and extending their rule into infinity (or at least until the heat death of the universe). The First Foundation, however, is frightened by the idea of losing their freedom of choice due to a preordained fate. The Second Foundation, however, still believes that their subtle rule (due to studying psychology and sociology) is better than the brutish leadership from the physical sciences.
    • Gaia, introduced in Foundation's Edge and which was created by Three Laws-Compliant robots (including R. Daneel Olivaw), feels compelled to try expanding their Hive Mind to the entire galaxy, creating a galactic Genus Loci. However, it/they recognizes that it/they are biased, so Golan Trevize is manipulated into choosing which fate is right; the First Foundation, the Second Foundation, or Galaxia. Afterwards, one of his major after-the-fact arguments for choosing Gaia is that it leaves the two other options potentially still open (as the other two would destroy Gaia at the minimum, while Gaia will subtly continue to support both until Galaxia is finally achieved) for the next few centuries or so, in case he changed his mind or something happens that changes the circumstances.

This was recently added to Genre Relaunch:

  • In the early 2000s there was a short-lived fad for animated action movies aimed at teenage boys, like Titan A.E., Treasure Planet, and Atlantis The Lost Empire. These movies seemed to be capitalizing on a nonexistent trend, because they were all, to a one, box-office failures. While animated action and adventure movies were still made, they were always advertised as comedies to boost their chances (i.e. The Incredibles). Then, in 2018, Sony Pictures released Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse, which wore its "animated action movie" status on its sleeve and was a major success, singlehandedly revving the genre.

Two issues I have:

  • 1). Does "animated action movies aimed at teenage boys" really count as a Genre.
  • 2). Even if it does count as a Genre, does one movie qualify as a relaunch if there aren't any other films in the genre released afterwards.

1) Ok... When I asked about the Raiders of the Lost Ark thing, I said "imploding", not "exploding". It's Belloq's head that explodes. Dietrich's shrivels up.

2) On another topic, why don't I see Raiden's "I am lightning. The rain transformed." falling under I Am the Noun? I mean, sure, "lightning" is what his name means, and the line already falls under Badass Boast, but... c'mon.
I just wanna make sure if there is or isn't a reason, so if there isn't, I go ahead and put it myself.

Because I know VideoGame.Epic Battle Fantasy has attacks like this for enemies, at least in the fifth game.

VideoGame.Baten Kaitos:

  • Fake Difficulty: In Origins, many bosses and some late-game enemies have multi-target attacks programmed a certain way. Instead of hitting all three characters with a single powerful attack, they will hit the party at random with multiple weaker attacks (up to ten times). This is fairly manageable if all three party members are up (although it sucks when the Random Number God decides it hates one of your party members and piles all the attacks on that one), but if one of your members is down, it still hits the same number of times, often utterly annihilating them. Translation: Unless you like sudden, unexpected party wipes, prioritize revival over anything else.

In My Wife Is a Demon Queen, Xiang Ye is able to use his magical forging capabilities to manipulate and use "useless lumber" to make things from. While Useless Lumber is found around in certain areas, it is unbreakable unusable materials no one, not even his master magical forger or the master's teachers, can use. It cannot be cut or destroyed with fire. It is believed to have come from when the world's creator made the world and left, the bits of his ship he left by that remained around are this useless lumber, which grows in "forests". Would this qualify for Mineral MacGuffin, or Insubstantial Ingredients or Applied Phlebotinum? Or a combination of them?

Since Asshole Victim seems to have some trouble example, i wonder if this counts for Characters.Magical Girl Raising Project for Swim-Swim.

Asshole Victim: No one is mourning Swim Swim's death after Ripple puts her down for killing her best friend.

I read Asshole Victim's death cant have some type of relationship and is just a jerk who gets killed. If the death is some ttpe of payback for what they did, it be Karmic Death.
