Five-Man Band has been receiving a lot of misuse. As was concluded in this TRS thread, it needs a massive cleanup. There are over 30 subpages and almost 3500 wicks to be gone through. This thread is for organizing the cleanup effort and discussing any and all examples to be added and cut.
What is correct use of the trope?
- The characters must be part of a team, that is, a team dynamic must exist between members of the band.
- There must be exactly 5 team members
Format for examples
In an effort to cut down on misuse as well as get rid of all the Zero Context Examples, we are trying to shift all examples to the following format. If you are familiar with a current work and can do a writeup for it, please do so and post it here.
The sandbox for sorting examples is here.
Completed
Subpages:
- Other (Moved and redirected to a Just for Fun page, as that is what is was acting as.)
Still needs work
Wicks (Related To page):

I will keep this post updated with the progress made, and any other needed information.

Found on Madan Senki Ryukendo
- Five-Man Band - The Jamanga follow this trope exactly:
- The Big Bad - DaiMaOh
- The Dragon - Dr. Worm/Jack Moon
- The Evil Genius - Baron Bloody
- The Brute - Rock Crimson
- The Dark Chick - Lady Gold
Six characters (Dr. Worm and Jack Moon are different characters, according to the series' Wikipedia page), so that's a cut. Removed it.

Found this on Characters.Dominoes The Irregulars
- Five-Man Band: Subverted. They are a team of five superheroes in training, but they don't really fit the archetype well. Hattori and Hakuba fit the best, with Hattori as The Lancer and Hakuba as The Leader. Hattori is a good personality foil for Hakuba, making him a solid Lancer, but in terms of the classic leadership roles, Hakuba's not really charismatic, headstrong, or a mastermind, and while he has a levelheaded demeanor it's mostly used to emotionally tear down descent rather than to unify, which leads just as often to internal group conflicts as it does to cooperation. The other three roles are The Big Guy, The Chick, and The Smart Guy, but none of those fit well with the three remaining members, Ran, Kazuha, and Aoko—or rather, none of these roles apply to any particular remaining members in ways that couldn't be arguably applied to the others just as much. The Five-Man Band archetype falls further apart when Hattori quits the team after the events of Part 1.
It's a massive wall of text that isn't even a subversion. I've cut it for now, but if anyone wants to rewrite it, go ahead.
TRS Wick CleaningShould we maybe add the former trope image to the imagelinks as an example to the FMB trope? I mean the original with The Heart not the changed one with The Chick written over. Since the previous image of the Voltron team is there as well.
Found this in Characters.Torment Tides Of Numenera.
- Five-Man Band: They call themselves the Fifth Eye, and there are five of them. Dhama is indisputably The Leader and Ziobe was their primary physical warrior. The other roles are less obvious since we never see them as an active team. As powerful psychics, any of them might qualify as The Smart Guy on another team.
...Yeah, cut that.
Current Project: Incorruptible Pure PurenessFound this in Music.Girls Aloud.
- Five-Woman Band:
- The Leader: Cheryl, the most vocal member and the center of much of the band's media attention, undeniably the group's overall Breakout Star.
- The Lancer: Nadine, while essentially the musical Face Of The Band as the main vocalist on most the group's songs, she generally had a quieter media personality & tended to stay out of the limelight in comparison to Cheryl.
- The Smart Girl: Nicola, while often seemingly playing the role of the Shrinking Violet through much of the band's run she later showed to have the most hidden talents of any member, especially as a fashionista and songwriter.
- The Big Guy: Sarah, thanks to a bit of an edgier, Tanktop Tomboy reputation, though perhaps more fitting as "The Wild One".
- The Heart: Kimberley, thanks to her Team Mom and Only Sane Woman traits.
These are real people; I'm not sure FMB can really apply since it's a narrative pattern.
Current Project: Incorruptible Pure PurenessFound these entries with a Five-Man Band pothole in DeconstructorFleet.Anime And Manga and DeconstructorFleet.Hunterx Hunter.
- Also a deconstruction of the Super Robot anime that have Five-Man Band teams. It's functionally a Real Robot take on a Super Robot plotline, touching on how hard it would be for four people, each one Hot-Blooded to some degree and confident in their individual piloting skills, to control a Combining Mecha which requires all its pilots to operate in sync. The first transformation took place after a quarter of the show had passed (after the pilots got the hang of the transforming mechanics and their Beast forms), and it actually failed since they have yet to learn how to suppress their ego and work effectively as a team.
- Five-Man Band dynamics are played straight and deconstructed. While Gon, Killua, Kurapika and Leorio band together at the beginning of the Hunter's Exam, they slowly drift apart over the course of the series. Leorio and Kurapika drop out of the plot during the Greed Island and Chimera Ant arcs, while Gon and Killua are Put on a Bus for the Dark Continent arcs. The four have actually spent more time apart in terms of chapters than they ever have together, demonstrating how a group of tight-knit friends can grow apart due to something as simple as differing priorities. This is interesting because Gon, Killua, Kurapika, and Leorio map onto the team from Togashi's first big series— namely The Overpowered Idiot Hero (Gon and Yusuke), the Small Scary Killer (Killua and Hiei), the Smart Pretty Boy (Kurapika and Kurama), and the Big Idiot With A Heart Of Gold (Leorio and Kuwabara). The only character to make an appearance in every major arc in the story outside of the Chimera Ant Arc is none other than Hisoka.
Both entries involve four people, not five, so the potholes are incorrect. How to rewrite the entries (whether the entries do qualify Deconstructor Fleet is another issue)?

Graffiti WallFound this example in VideoGame.Stubbs The Zombie. Cut?
- Five-Man Band: Andrew Monday, Mr. Skegnis, Chief Masters, Dr. Wye, Otis Monday, and Maggie Monday are a villainous variation of this trope.
- The Big Bad: Andrew Monday, in that he's a greedy man who treats the city like it's his play-place and cares more about property damage than the death toll, and he's also a tyrant in terms of how much he is in control of the city. That, and he's literally the leader of this villainous group.
- The Dragon: Mr. Skegnis, in that he's Andrew Monday's right-hand man and the most loyal member in this Five-Man Band to Monday. Him being a bodyguard means that he often next to him in order to do his job protecting Andrew Monday and fitting his position as The Dragon he obeys most of Monday's orders.
- The Evil Genius: Dr. Wye, in that he's the smartest member of this group since he's a scientist. Combined with Token Evil Teammate, as it should be noted that he's even evil than his allies, due to his Anti-Villain status unlike his Nominal Hero allies.
- The Brute: Chief Masters, in that he loves to solve most of his problems with violence. More so than the other members of this band. In fact, he encourages the police officers directly in his command to "shoot first and ask no questions whatsoever", in other words he encourages his men in his direct command to use brute force first no matter what, further demonstrating why Chief Masters deserves to be labelled The Brute.
- The Dark Chick: Maggie Monday. She counts as a Dark Chick because she associates with this villainous Five-Man Band, is the only woman in this band, and supports their efforts, though she will still call out problematic things she notices such as Mr. Skegnis’ unwanted advances and her son caring more about property damage than people dying. However, this is combined with Token Good Teammate as she is the most kind-hearted character in this game until her zombification-induced Face–Heel Turn (and even then, she's still kind-hearted enough to persuade Stubbs into letting their son live), and she's oblivious to most of the corruption of the other members of this evil Five-Man Band.
- The Sixth Ranger: Otis Monday doesn't directly work with the other villains, but is the entire reason the game happens in the first place and isn't the most stable of individuals following the zombie attacks. He's The Sixth Ranger in that he's the obligatory sixth addition to this five-man band, does not fit the other five positions in this band, and he helps this evil Five-Man Band by fighting for a town ruled with an iron fist by this sinister five man band's leader.
Six members, not five; cut it.
TRS Wick CleaningI'm tempted to nuke this one due to how awfully formatted it looks. From Manga.Medaka Box:
- Five-Man Band:
- Against the Thirteen Party:
- Big Bad: Oudo.
- The Dragon: Yukuhashi.
- The Evil Genius: Naze.
- The Brute: Takachiho.
- The Dark Chick: Koga. Subverted in that she's really peppy and nice.
- The Sixth Ranger: Munakata.
- During the Student Council Election battle:
- Big Bad: Kumagawa. Subverted in that he fought first, but then played straight in the president battle.
- The Dragon: Gagamaru.
- The Evil Genius: Shiranui certainly counts.
- The Brute: Shibuki.
- The Dark Chick: Mukae.
Yes. Kill it. I don't think we can salvage it.
Current Project: Incorruptible Pure PurenessThat is a ZCE tree. Cut it.
Graffiti WallI don't think anything there can be saved. Just cut it.
TRS Queue | Works That Require Cleanup of Complaining | Troper WallIt's axed.
she/her | TRS needs your help! | Contributor of Trope ReportThis was added to Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles: Shredder's Revenge:
- Five-Man Band: Every mutated member of the playable roster embodies a certain archetype.
- The Hero: Leonardo.
- The Big Guy: Raphael.
- The Heart: Michelangelo.
- The Smart Guy: Donatello.
- The Mentor: Splinter.
- Sixth Ranger: Miyamoto Usagi.
Comment out or cut? Indentation and zero context notifiers sent to AlexTropesFisher, who added it.

Cut it if Alex doesn't resolve those issues, I reckon. If the examples still seem like misuse after added context, cut them.
TRS Wick CleaningAdditionally, we don't count the Sixth Ranger in our FMB examples anymore.
Current Project: Incorruptible Pure PurenessSo remove all the Sixth Rangers from all FMBs.
Edited by AbsoluteRainbow on Feb 9th 2024 at 5:40:32 PM
Absolute RainbowIt's the other way around. A Five-Man Band with a Sixth Ranger is no longer a Five-Man Band.
Although they might still count for the part of the story before the sixth joins.
Yeah, it's possible but if not then examples should be rewritten for The Team.
Current Project: Incorruptible Pure PurenessIsn’t that an exampleless supertrope now?
It’s a bit confusing when a trope is like that, but fine.

Join the Five-Man Band cleanup project!
You might want to change "book five" to "''Crystal Crowned", which is the fifth book's title, but otherwise it looks fine.
