Toyline

  • Humble Beginnings: The toyline started with David Horvath and Sun-Min Kim separated from each other due to Sun-Min's student visa expiring and her having to move back to Korea before the franchise could start. David wrote her a letter of support with a drawing of the character that would become Wage on it, and she sewed a doll of him as a gift in return. Through an incident that made it seem like they were pitching a toy, more dolls were sewn, more characters were added, and the toyline was born.
  • No Export for You: Japan has had various Uglydoll crossovers that were never released elsewhere, such as Ultraman and Thunderbirds.
  • What Could Have Been: Various concepts in Uglydolls never ended up coming into fruition.
    • As seen on a limited collection poster, Wage was set to be part of the DC Comics line, being Shazam!.
    • For the Star Trek line, Jeero was planned to be Sulu, only static art exists of this as of now, though.
    • A majority of the prototype Uglys never came to be turned into official ones.
    • An interview on the "Marsham Toy Hour" podcast revealed that the first plan for Uglydolls to go into animation was not a film, but rather a Cartoon Network show.

Movie

  • All-Star Cast: Like whoa. We've got Kelly Clarkson, Pitbull, Nick Jonas, Wanda Sykes, Gabriel Iglesias, Blake Shelton, Janelle Monáe, Emma Roberts (in her first mainstream advertised family film since Hotel for Dogs), Wang Leehom, Bebe Rexha, Charli XCX and Lizzo.
  • Box Office Bomb: Being released between Avengers: Endgame and Pokémon Detective Pikachu was far from the best idea. Having an estimated $45-53 million budget, its final domestic gross is a meager $20,150,241, with overseas takings at $6.4 million for a worldwide total of $26,550,241.
  • Breakaway Pop Hit: The song "Broken and Beautiful" by Kelly Clarkson was written specifically for the film. While the film ended up flopping and being pulled out of theaters thanks to releasing a week after Avengers: Endgame, the song itself gained heavy radio play, continuing to be played after its departure from theaters.
  • Celebrity Voice Actor: Some of the cast members of the Latin Spanish dub consist of Argentine actresses Tini Stoessel (from Violetta), Carolina Kopelioff, Katja Martínez (both from Soy Luna) and Mariel Percossi, Mexican singers Sofía Reyes and Mario Bautista. Pitbull also applies here.
  • Creator Cameo: Director Kelly Asbury voices Gibberish Cat, Oliver and the chef.
  • Cross-Dressing Voices: Lucky Bat is voiced by a woman in the Japanese dub (Akiko Nakagawa), presumably to give him a more cute, childish voice.
  • Early Draft Tie-In:
    • Ice-Bat and Wedgehead are still male in UglyDolls: An Imperfect Adventure, the tie-in video game. Wedgehead is also still blue, unlike the yellow film coloration. Despite this, Wage and Tray have been changed to reflect their film counterparts, hinting that Ice-Bat and Wedgehead's changes were much later in production.
    • The novelization has Peggy as a female character. In the final film, Peggy is male.
  • Late Export for You: In countries like the United Kingdom, Russia and Portugal, the film wouldn't be released until August, possibly to avoid competition. In Australia and New Zealand, it wasn't released until late September.
  • Multiple Languages, Same Voice Actor: Pitbull voices Ugly Dog in both the original English and the Spanish dub.
  • The Other Darrin: Kellen Goff voice matches for Wang Leehom as Lucky Bat in UglyDolls: An Imperfect Adventure.
  • Permanent Placeholder: The scene at the end featuring a young girl befriending Moxy, with her name revealed to be Maizy was originally intended as a placeholder, as Maizy was the name of the niece of story artist David Trumble’s partner. Director Kelly Asbury found the gesture heartwarming and told him to keep it in the final film.
  • Release Date Change: The film was originally set to release on May 10, 2019. It was bumped up a week to May 3, most likely to avoid competing with Pokémon Detective Pikachu, which also released on the 10th, while also coinciding with Avengers: Endgame getting pushed a week early to April 26. Despite this, a scene where Moxy marks the original release date on her calendar went unaltered.
  • Saved from Development Hell: The film was announced in 2011 for Illumination Entertainment to distribute it. After a studio change and director changes, the film eventually was given a 2019 release date, eight years after the announcement date.
  • What Could Have Been:
    • Illumination Entertainment was set to create the film, before the switch to STX Entertainment.
    • Robert Rodriguez was originally the director. He was replaced by Kelly Asbury late in production, though he is still a producer, along with being credited for the story.
    • Lucky Bat was mocked up as a Pez dispenser along with Moxy, Ox and Ugly Dog for the movie's collection, but never made it past the prototype stage, unlike the other three.
    • A TV series adapting the film was announced in 2018, but never came to be for two reasons, those being the financial failure of the movie itself and director Kelly Asbury's passing in 2020.
