Here a wick check will be performed for New York Is Only Manhattan.

Why? This trope is suspected of attracting mostly aversions, and may not be all that tropeworthy or common on its own. All wicks will be checked due to low wick count. The correct use is when New York is portrayed as being only Manhattan for the record.

Wicks checked: 55/55

Wick totals:

  • 15/55 examples, or 27.27%, were aversions
  • 9/55 examples, or 16.36%, were misused in some way

  • 3/55 examples, or 5.46%, were unclear
  • 12/55 examples, or 21.82%, were not classifiable

Totaled together, that's

    Correct use (12/55)
  • Film.Brooklyn Bridge: Various references to a bridge "from New York to Brooklyn" are a reminder of how at one time New York really was only Manhattan. Brooklyn would not be incorporated into New York City until the 1890s, over a decade afte the bridge was completed. Relatively straight usage, as New York is portrayed as being only Manhattan.
  • Literature. Are You There God Its Me Margaret: Margaret's family moved from NYC at the start of the book. New York is described as nothing but Manhattan. Correct, straight usage.
  • Literature.Cities In Flight: The flying city of New York consists only of Manhattan. Correct, straight usage.
  • ComicBook.Deadpool: The main stories in the comic all take place not only on Manhattan, but within a 5 or 10 block Midtown area. Correct, straight usage.
  • Invoked by the owner of the Manhattan Minx roller derby team in "Jamalot:"
New York isn't Queens or the Bronx; it's Manhattan! Correct invoked use.
  • Characters.MCU Defenders: Justified. Every member of the Defenders is from the New York borough of Manhattan, which is where the events of The Defenders take place. Matt and Jessica were born and raised in Hell's Kitchen while Luke is a proud native of Harlem and Danny simply lives in Manhattan itself as opposed to a specific neighborhood. Justified, but correct.
  • ComicBook.Puerto Rico Strong: This is explored in Blame It On 'Rico. Tito is considered different things depending on where he's at: he's from "de fuera" in Puerto Rico, he's Puerto Rican in the Bronx, he's a Bronxite in Manhattan, and he's a New Yorker elsewhere. More of a discussed example, but correct.
  • Series. The Defenders 2017: Justified as both the Hand and the Defenders specifically are based in the borough itself. Justified, but correct.
  • VideoGame.Lego Marvel Super Heroes: The island of Manhattan is used as a conveniently well-defined location for everything to happen on. For this to work, the game's designers have moved some things to Manhattan that are normally situated in greater New York (such as the X-Mansion, which in the comics is upstate in Salem Center). Correct usage.
  • VideoGame.Spider Man PS 4: The island is the only playable area. Granted, it's gigantic enough to be a game world onto itself. Seems to be correct.
  • WesternAnimation.A Troll In Central Park: Justified, as Central Park is a Manhattan locale. Correct enough.
  • WesternAnimation.Oliver And Company: The film takes place almost exclusively in Manhattan; the climax occurs on the Manhattan Bridge. Further, the opening scene is a slow pan of western Manhattan, and the closing scene is a zoom-out on Times Square. Correct enough, though I don't know what "almost" implies here.

    Aversions (15/55)
  • Arthur.Tropes N To R: Averted in "Postcards from Buster" (not the show), where the characters visit NYC. They go to different boroughs and take real-world footage. Aversion.
  • EverybodyLovesRaymond.Tropes H To P: It averts this. The location is Lynbrook, Long Island. Aversion.
  • Fanfic. The Shikigami Ranger And The Monster Mashers: Averted. The titular team is dealing with a situation in Manhattan, but the montage on chapter four showcases that the Avengers and other heroes are trying to stop a rampage by Cthulhu itself through Queens at the same time and it's implied the other boroughs are not doing too well either. Aversion.
  • Film.Bushwick: Averted. The film is set in Bushwick and filmed on location in Brooklyn. Aversion.
  • Film.Saturday Night Fever: Averted here, which focuses on Brooklyn. Aversion.
  • Film. The Snake Pit: Averted. When the mentally ill protagonist is tested on whether she's well enough to leave the mental institution:
Man: Where were you living when you became ill?
    Virginia: New York.
    Man: Where in New York?
    Virginia: New York City.
Man: I mean, where in New York City?
    Virginia: Manhattan. Aversion.
  • LawAndOrderSVU.Tropes G To P: Averted here, while this show focuses on Manhattan, the other boroughs are routinely mentioned and/or visited. Averted.
  • Literature.I Am J: Averted. A large portion of the book takes place in Manhattan, though it's clear that NYC is more than just Manhattan. Averted.
  • Literature.Young Wizards: Averted. The protagonists live in Nassau County, on Long Island, and the series consequently spends quite a bit of time there. The entire second book is set in The Hamptons. (That said, the main action of the first book does take place on a day trip to Manhattan.) Averted.
  • Manga.La Magnifique Grande Scene: New York City: Just like in real life the finals of the YAGP are held here. Averts New York Is Only Manhattan much to the disappointment of the characters as the first half of the finals are held at Purchase College in Westchester County. Averted pothole.
  • Recap.CSINYS 01 E 11: Averted, as the title suggests. Averted.
  • Series.CSINY: Averted by the series as a whole. Crimes happen in all five boroughs throughout the 9 year run. Season 1's 'Tri-Borough' has cases spread across the city. Also, Aiden is from Brooklyn, Danny is from Staten Island and Don is from Queens. Averted.
  • Series. The King Of Queens: Averted here. Which, as it says on the label, is set in and around Queens. Averted.
  • VideoGame.Driver: Averted by Driver and Driver: Parallel Lines. Driver takes place in New York in the last part of the game and part of the map includes Brooklyn. Parallel Lines, on the other hand, includes not only Manhattan, Brooklyn, Queens, and the Bronx (but not Staten Island), but a portion of New Jersey as well. Averted.
  • VideoGame.Grand Theft Auto IV: Averted here, where every borough except Staten Island and even part of New Jersey (In the form of Alderney), is represented in its Liberty City. Averted.

    Other misuse (9/55)
  • Film. Those People: It's set in the upper-east side. No mention of whether all of New York is portrayed this way.
  • Literature.Voices After Midnight: While the kids and their parents do go on a train/boat tour late in the book that takes them past Brooklyn and a few other locales, the entirety of their stay in New York takes place in Manhattan, with the townhouse located at East Seventy-third Street and a number of famous locations nearby (Central Park, Madison Avenue, Fifth Avenue) either name-dropped or actually visited. Justified, however, by the fact the kids' dad works for an advertising agency that has offices located there and that only such a location would have the sort of townhouse needed for the story. Justified, and misuse as well since Brooklyn is mentioned.
  • Recap.Steven Universe S 3 E 8 Mr Greg: Steven, his dad Greg, and Pearl visit Empire City (their universe's name for NYC), and the hotel is clearly in (the world's equivalent to) Manhattan. Uses a fictional version of NYC.
  • Franchise.Marvel Universe: It has this as a Zig-Zagged Trope: While the majority of events that occur on New York visibly occur only on Manhattan, there are many heroes who live in other boroughs and thus occasionally had to deal with situations closer to home (example: Spider-Man being a Queens native, Captain America taking pride in bring from Brooklyn). Boroughs other than Manhattan mentioned. Misuse.
  • Series.News Radio: Invoked when Bill gives an editorial.
Bill: Wake up, Manhattan! Wake up, Brooklyn! Wake up... the other three boroughs! Brooklyn mentioned. Misuse.
  • VideoGame.Midnight Club: The first game starts off in New York, but is limited to Manhattan. The only evidence that the other boroughs exist is that one of your rivals, Larry Muller, proudly states he's from Queens. Queens mentioned. Misuse.
  • VideoGame. The Division: The game starts out in Brooklyn but the rest is in Manhattan. Brooklyn used as a setting. Misuse.

    ZCEs and potholes (4/55)

    Unclear (3/55)
  • VideoGame.Assassins Creed III: Connor and Desmond only visit Manhattan, though in the former's case it's justified because during the 18th Century New York City was comprised solely of what would later be called Lower Manhattan. I mean, technically correct, but if that was the time period is it really an example? Unclear.
  • VideoGame.True Crime New York City: The game takes place in New York City (as you can tell from the title). Once again, the city seems to be relegated to Manhattan. Debug mode reveals other areas of New York. They have named streets, vehicles and pedestrians, but no buildings. Does it still count if the other areas are Dummied Out? Unclear.
  • WesternAnimation.Holly Hobbie And Friends: One episode has the characters going to New York City, in particular Manhattan. One of the characters is terrified of the stereotypical New York things like heavy traffic or the skyscrapers and had to learn to deal with it. In particular? Does that imply there are other parts in the movie? Unclear.

    Unclassifiable (12/55)
