Characters in the South Park fanfic-in-progress The Three Muses Of Michael St John

    Michael

Michael St. John

“Oh, [South Park is] grand,” you said, waving your hand in front of your face and leaving a light trail of cigarette smoke in its wake. “We’ve got museums, monuments, the Eiffel Tower, the Golden Gate Bridge, celebrity homes, and all-you-can-eat crab legs for $12.99 every Sunday.”
The main character and the one who's Second-Person Narration Point of View is the one through which the story is told. Also known as "Tall Goth".
  • Berserk Button: Infidelity; Mike (knowingly) falsely accusing Mae of seeing Michael behind his back is what prompts their conversation about their relationships with Mae in book two and he gets notably upset with his friends in book three when they (unknowingly) do the same thing. Having been the result of his father's own affair, it's a touchy subject.
  • Cannot Spit It Out: Common in regards to his romantic feelings. Cassie sees through it and leaves it alone, Mae doesn't and ends up with Mike as a result. Mike sees it and does something about it.
  • Childhood Friends: With Mae.
  • Child Prodigy: As a poet. His skilled lyricism is something Cassie notes very early on in the story and once he learns how to write sheet music she's blown away by it. She plays it live at a cafe and is quick to give him credit, which starts him on his path of songwriting. He's an established local musician post-timeskip.
  • Eating the Eye Candy: A lot of his descriptions of Mae go into fairly heavy detail. He starts doing this with Mike as well in book three.
  • Goth: Long-established, and nothing has changed.
  • Hemo Erotic: Not so much the blood aspect but as an adult he has a thing for small amounts of pain. The tendency to bite in his partners, while not something he seeks out, is a bonus.
  • Odd Friendship: Has a number of them, including a soucouyant, a number of witches, and the woman who raised one of his best friends.
  • Poor Communication Kills: Why Mae ended up with Mike in the first place. Michael gets better. Slowly.
  • Precocious Crush: On Cassie. Most prominent in book one, but by book two it still hasn't quite gone away.
  • Southern Gentleman: Takes on the characteristics in a joking manner from time to time, but notes it would be an interesting personality to adopt when he got older if not for the blatant racism.
  • Southern Gothic: An aesthetic that interests him greatly, and the subject of a number of his songs.
  • Trademark Favorite Food: Black coffee, but he's taken it with a little bit of hazelnut ever since Cassie made it for him.
  • Ugly Guy, Hot Wife: How Michael predicts more than once his future with Mae will go should they get together and last long enough. Downplayed in offshoots that see them in the future, however, as Mae has chosen to age at his pace.
  • Voluntary Vampire Victim: Has been one for Mae for a number of years.

    Cassie

Cassandra "Cassie" Thelman

"I'm not responsible for you, but I encourage camaraderie."
Pete's older sister and legal guardian, as well as the secondary focus for Book One.
  • Big Sister Instinct: To all of the goth kids, even to the point of defending Michael from his own parents after he briefly ran away from home.
  • Cool Big Sis: She tries to be more of a parent, but Pete, Henrietta, and Firkle all view her as this.
  • Cool Teacher: Takes a job partway through book one at the school, teaching kids to play guitar after classes. Michael and Mike are both students of hers, though Mike's tenure is short.
  • Demoted to Extra: Takes a back seat in the narrative after book one when Michael's romantic focus is diverted, but she does play a larger part in one chapter in book two.
  • Establishing Character Moment: In chapter one, during the parent's meeting with PC Principal. Michael reflects on the first time they all met her and how she sat with them for a cup of coffee when they skipped class one day. She took Pete back to the school without a fight and the rest of them volunteered to go as well at her advice.
  • Friend to All Children: Mostly out of focus, but Michael notes that once she gets a job as a guitar instructor at the school she quickly becomes the most popular teacher there.
  • The Heart: Though she and Pete claim it's more the risk of getting CPS called on them than her influence, she is the reason Pete has been doing better in school and getting in trouble less for the past two years.
  • Promotion to Parent: Though she was only eleven when their parents passed away and they love their foster parents they... left something to be desired. As a result Cassie became obsessed with making sure Pete (who was only two months old at the time) hit all his milestones and had as normal a childhood as he could get. She has been his primary caregiver ever since. Took a secondary promotion to legal guardian two years prior when their foster parents wanted to move away and she and Pete elected to stay in South Park.
  • Reasonable Authority Figure: From her rooftop chats with Pete to the various back-and-forth interactions she has with the parents of the other goth kids, Cassie has more than proven herself a trustworthy figure to the group, which often leads to her being the one they go to for guidance.
  • Single Woman Seeks Good Man: Discussed and averted. She has no intention of even trying for a partner until Pete's out of the house and remains single and uninterested even post-timeskip.
  • Stacy's Mom: The target of Michael's Precocious Crush in books one and two, despite not technically being a mother.

    Mae

Marilee Magnolia "Mae" Mills

"The nerve of you, Michael St. John, thinking I'd go cursing your friends. [...] It was just a minor protection spell, nothing I haven't cast on you a thousand times."
Michael's best friend outside of the other goth kids and primary love interest. She is the secondary focus for Book Two.
  • Childhood Friends: With Michael.
  • Color Motif: Blue. It's been her favorite color from childhood and her clothing rarely deviates from it. Her sisters in the coven are often noted be specific colors as well.
  • Eating the Eye Candy: After Michael confirms he returns her feelings, she's not shy about explaining why she's attracted to him on a fairly regular basis.
  • The Heart: She's ultimately the one that puts Michael and Mike on good terms with one another.
  • Lady of Black Magic: Just like the rest of her sisters in the coven. The ultimate goal of their upbringing.
  • Our Vampires Are Different / Daywalking Vampire / Technically-Living Vampire: Though the story and characters regularly refer to Mae as a vampire for the sake of convenience, she is actually a soucouyant, but she doesn't take offense to the mixup.
  • Properly Paranoid: She's learned to put bottles on trees to trap malevolent spirits and paint the front of her residence blue to further ward them off, as well as setting up various other wards to keep the household peaceful. Given how often she has to reset all of these, Michael comes to the conclusion that she's probably doing all of this for a reason and lets her do her thing.
  • Southern Belle: And HOW! Born and raised in New Orleans, spent all of her school years in the same Prep School learning about her craft as well as how to cook and proper etiquette. Her (theorecital) persona in South Park: The Fractured but Whole is even named Southern Belle.
  • Stronger with Age: Mae's improvement post-timeskip is noted, primarily in her day-to-day magic use no longer requiring her to drink blood.
  • Super Smoke: As a soucouyant she has an innate ability to transform into a fireball, but this doesn't come without practice. At this point all she can do is turn her eyes into smoke to be able to see wherever she bids it to float.
  • Trademark Favorite Food: Butterfly Pea Flower Tea, no lemon.
  • Vampire Hickey: Invoked. Mae consciously uses her magic to make sure her bites bruise as little as possible.
  • Wooden Stake: She argues, however, that most people would die from that. She still doesn't appreciate the joke, though, as she was targeted with a number of these in her childhood.

    Mike

Michael "Mike" Makowski

“We’ve known each other for two months,” he said. “And I’ve been mocking her the whole time.”
Leader of the Vampire Society in South Park, though these days it's mostly just an alternative name for his general friend group. Mae's primary love interest as well as Michael's secondary, and the secondary focus for Book Three.
  • A Lighter Shade of Black: The Goth Kids’ main problem with him and his group. They’re much less cynical and more wholesome than the Goths.
  • Child Prodigy: No, he doesn't care about learning the guitar, as Cassie correctly points out. But he's not talentless; he is a fantastic artist, having a good grasp on semi-realism by the age of 12 with no formal education outside of standard elementary school art classes. He becomes a tattoo artist as an adult and it's a very nice job offer for him from a prominent tattoo shop that prompts the group's move to Denver in the penultimate chapter.
  • Everyone Has Standards: He's quick to admonish Ryan Ellis for giving Pete a hard time about Cassie's custody arrangement, even going so far as to threaten to revoke Ryan's membership in the Vampire Society if he does it again.
  • Hidden Depths: He's a talented artist, has a lot of first aid and medical knowledge, and is a practiced programmer. He also shows an interest in psychology, begrudgingly admitting that it's at least in part due to his step dad's work on the Thelman case.
  • Nice Guy: To the point that he doesn't even mind that Michael has feelings for his girlfriend and actually makes an effort to make it work out for both of them.
  • Promoted to Love Interest: For Michael. It's implied the promotion is one-sided, as Mike is open to the third side of their love triangle from the start.
  • Trademark Favorite Food: Cherry wine.
  • Voluntary Vampire Victim: It's practically a dream come true for him.
