Team JNPR

Jaune Arc AKA Agent Maine (The Meta)
The leader of Team JNPR. Following a mission gone wrong, Jaune was missing and presumed dead for months. In reality, under mysterious circumstances, Jaune was transported to a UNSC facility and was captured by C.T, leading to his memories being wiped and forcibly enlisted in the program under the identity of newbie Freelancer Agent Maine.

As a result of Sigma's manipulations and the Director's experiments, Jaune's personality became unhinged and was reduced to being Sigma's puppet as the AI went about his plans to capture the other AI Fragments and reach metastability. At the end of Revelation, following his encounter with the Reds and Blues of Project Freelancer, the Time Distortion Unit malfunctioned and returned Jaune to Remnant.
  • Adaptational Badass: He shows this as both Jaune and Agent Maine:
    • Since he's actually Agent Maine, he shares the brute's incredible strength and combat ability, best showcased when he effortlessly beat both Team RWBY and his former team at the same time.
    • On the flip side, as Agent Maine, he managed a feat that his canon self never did, winning a few rounds of the training match against Agent Texas. Several occasions have shown that he's still near enough her combat level for her to consider him a genuine threat.
  • Adaptational Nice Guy: Thanks to being a Composite Character of Maine and Jaune, he's still a brute with a My Country, Right or Wrong mentality, but he's also much friendlier and scrupulous than canon Maine ever was.
  • Amnesiac Hero: As Agent Maine, he remembered very little of his past, but he doesn't let it bother him during operations.
  • Berserk Button:
    • All it took for him to decide to utterly decimate Cardin was watching him bully Velvet.
    • Call him the Meta at your own peril.
  • Beware the Quiet Ones: Sure, Jaune is still the same adorable dork who got himself pinned to a tree, but after taking 9 bullets to the throat, he essentially is unable to talk and was paired up with Sigma. That certainly didn't go balls up. Even when Sigma is removed, he's still one of the most dangerous characters in the story, and loves to prove it on more than one occasion.
  • Brainwashed and Crazy: By Sigma, who used his desire to figure out his true identity to manipulate Maine into letting Sigma access his implants. The end result was the Meta, who is completely broken to Sigma's will.
  • Composite Character: Jaune and Maine are the same person in the fanfic, with Jaune going through the same experiences as the big brute. It certainly helps evolve him into an Adaptational Badass.
  • Curb-Stomp Battle: He's been on a few of these in the past, most notable being his fight with Team RWBY and NPR (albeit with some difficulty).
  • Do Not Call Me "Paul": Prefers to be called Maine instead of Jaune because he's still getting used to his memories, but he responds fairly to both. On the other hand, don't ever call him the Meta or he will wreck your shit in the blink of an eye.
  • Heel–Face Revolving Door: From a good guy to a member of the morally Gray Project Freelancer to the Meta and back to a good guy.
  • Heroic BSoD: Near the end of his first mission as Maine, Jaune was ordered to kill a group of civilian scientists in spite of his protests. He did as he was ordered, but afterwards was reduced to a sobbing, vomiting mess.
  • Noodle Incident: How Jaune found his way to the UNSC and Project Freelancer, even after over twenty chapters, has yet to be answered. All we do know is that he took down a few UNSC operatives upon arrival and was experimented on by the Director. NPR witnessed what happened to him, but were so traumatized by it that they refused to give details, but Pyrrha blames herself for it.
  • Powered Armor: Wore a MJOLNIR armor set like other Freelancers, though he lost it after undergoing a mental breakdown and was recovered by Beacon Academy. He briefly wears the downgraded STRIKER unit developed with Remnant and UNSC technology.
  • Punch-Clock Villain: As a coping mechanism for his actions in Project Freelancer, Maine behaves like a cold, ruthless killing machine in the field and his usual self outside of it. This is deeply unhealthy.
  • Red Eyes, Take Warning: As a result of the experiments done to him by the Director, his blue eyes changed to red. And considering he's Agent Maine, need we say more?
  • Tragic Villain: As the Meta. His desire to find out his true identity was exploited by Sigma, who broke him and turned him into a brute who followed his every command. Even after Sigma is destroyed, his mind is too broken from his lingering influence to leave his identity as the Meta. Fortunately, his status as this doesn’t last long.
  • Vitriolic Best Buds: The "best" part is still getting there, but he and Church argue constantly yet consider each other friends.

    Nora Valkyrie

    Pyrrha Nikos

     Lie Ren

AI

    Leonard L. Church AKA Alpha
The Alpha Artificial Intelligence, based off of the mind of the Director of Project Freelancer. After being forced to undergo experiments that caused it to break its mind off into fragment AI pieces representing different facets of its emotions, the AI was implanted into an unsuspecting soldier and transferred to Blood Gulch under the identity of Private Leonard L. Church.

Following the events of Reconstruction, Church was presumed destroyed by the EMP wave that wiped out most of the assets at Project Freelancer HQ. In truth, Church and several other AI were revealed to be alive, but damaged and were restored. Church was the first AI to be repaired and currently serves as Jaune's translator, much to his chagrin.
  • Adaptational Badass: Canon Church wasn't able to shoot someone standing two feet in front of him with a full clip of a pistol. This Church manages to get two headshots with his sniper rifle during his battle against mental Sigma.
  • A Father to His Men: Surprisingly, what little we see of him pre-fragmentation shows he was this to the Freelancers, in spite of having never met them, particularly towards Tex.
  • All Men Are Perverts: When Church eavesdrops on Team RWBY's plans to go after the White Fang, he demands that Jaune get him access to the porn channels as compensation.
  • Anti-Hero: Church is an asshole with a myriad of issues, but can always be trusted to do the right thing, even if he'll complain about it the entire time.
  • Deadpan Snarker: Generally copes with the situations he winds up in with a healthy dose of snark.
  • Deuteragonist: Church's character arc and activities are given almost as much focus as Jaune's, and his actions help drive the plot along.
  • Freudian Excuse: Most of his issues are a result of the horrific psychological torture that he endured at the Director's hand, which as Delta notes, left him a bitter shell of his former self.
  • The Friend Nobody Likes: On account of his behavior. While some tolerate him and care about him, such as Penny (who can never really find a reason to hate anyone) and Tex (his girlfriend), he tends to grate on everybody's nerves. Team RWBY's especially.
  • Genre Savvy: He realizes and calls out the similarity of his battle with Mental!Sigma inside Maine's head to The Evil Within.
  • Heroic BSoD: When Tex finally makes him accept that he is the Alpha, he clearly starts panicking as it sinks into him he isn't and never was human, and that he's essentially the clone of a man that tortured him, ruined the lives of countless people, and forced the Reds and Blues into fighting a pointless war.
  • Insistent Terminology: He is a ghost, not an AI. Notably he still refers to himself as a ghost despite knowing he is indeed the Alpha.
  • I Reject Your Reality: He's in heavy denial about being an AI, and fervently insists he's a ghost instead.
  • Jerk with a Heart of Gold: Not apparent at first, but he does show he cares about people. In his own little way. Not that he would ever admit it.
  • Jerkass Has a Point: He is completely right in his claims of how much of a threat the Meta is, and knows first-hand how dangerous he is.
  • Knew It All Along: He was fully aware that he was an Artificial Intelligence, or at the very least had an idea he wasn't who he was claimed to be. Despite remembering Texas as his girlfriend who cheated on him behind his back, he also knew that her full name was Allison Church. By his own admission, being a ghost was much more preferable in his mind than being based off a man as callous as the Director.
  • Knight in Sour Armor: Church will do the right thing, and grumble about it the whole time.
  • Only Sane Man: He considers himself this since he's the only person who seems to realize the threat Maine poses. In reality everyone else considers him an annoying, if useful, ally.
  • Sir Swears-a-Lot: He's the most prone to using profanity out of the cast and drops F-bombs constantly.
  • Sitcom Archnemesis: To Ruby, due to his constant swearing and her hatred of swearing.
  • Spared by the Adaptation: Though technically alive in the form of Epsilon, Church still died in the EMP blast at the end of Reconstruction. In the fanfic, he and many other AI were only damaged and had to be repaired.
  • The Nicknamer: Rarely refers to denizens of Remnant by their actual names, most of them are Mythology Gags to the stories each character is based on, I.E calling Ren, Mulan.
  • Tomato in the Mirror: He's still in denial about being an AI, in spite of the litany of evidence for this being the case. He finally accepts this, and promptly reacts how you'd expect; a Heroic BSoD and then anger.
  • Took a Level in Jerkass: From what we see of him pre-fragmentation, he was far more openly caring and polite, and though he was somewhat bitter and snarky, he was nowhere near the jerk he is in present day.
  • Vitriolic Best Buds: The "best" part is still getting there, but he and Maine argue constantly yet consider each other friends.
  • You Have GOT to Be Kidding Me!: He basically has this reaction to Ozpin telling him who The Meta is.

     Allison "Tex" Church AKA Beta
  • Action Girl: To the point the members of Team RWBY and JNPR are impressed by her.
  • Drill Sergeant Nasty: She's basically this after she becomes the teaching assistant of Glynda Goodwitch's combat class, and boy does she love it.
  • Ridiculously Human Robot: Was this in canon, here she's been given the same type of robotic boy as Penny.

    Omega AKA O'Malley
The embodiment of the Alpha's rage.
  • Not-So-Harmless Villain: As Church notes, in spite of him behaving like a hammy supervillain straight out of a B-Movie, he’s still legitimately dangerous and should be kept imprisoned to make sure he can't cause any trouble.

    Delta
The embodiment of the Alpha's logic.
  • The Spock: He is composed entirely of logic, and thus gives off this vibe.

    Sigma
The embodiment of the Alpha's ambition, who broke Jaune's mind and transformed him into the Meta.
  • Posthumous Character: He was destroyed in the EMP blast, though a phantom version of him still haunts Jaune's mind.

    Gamma
The embodiment of the Alpha's deceit.

Project Freelancer

    The Director
The highly amoral head of the Project.

    Agent Washington

  • Nice Guy: Prior to the Epsilon incident, Wash was this.

    Agent Carolina

    Agent York

    Agent South Dakota

    Agent North Dakota

    Agent Wyoming

    Agent Florida
