Characters / Escaped Chasm
aka: Dwellers Empty Path

Go To

This is a character sheet for the characters from the Escaped Chasm series, currently consisting of the titular game, the indirect sequel that is Dweller's Empty Path, as well as the related animation Dwellers of the Mountain's Forest.

Beware of unmarked spoilers.

Tropes relevant to multiple characters

  • Little Bit Beastly: Many of the characters are humanoid with animal features, such as Claire's bat wings or Aimottle's rabbit ears; this is the distinction between Origin-types and Natural-types; both are classified as human but Natural-type takes after the local fauna (or in rare occasions, flora).

Characters introduced in Dwellers of the Mountain's Forest

     Yoki

Yoki

The series protagonist. A girl with incredible powers but no memories of her past who lives within the forest.
  • Action Girl: It's been mentioned she is pretty strong, and has taken down Beasts with her powers.
  • Amnesiac Hero: She doesn't remember everything about her past, though it doesn't seem to bother. This had seemingly happened early on, as Charles notes she forgot about her sister when she was still young.
  • Bad Powers, Good People: Many people find what she can do weird and scary, and one of the adventuring party's members mistakes her for an evil entity. She uses her powers for good, though.
  • The Cameo: A doll of her appears in Seam's shop in Deltarune, another game with art from Temmie Chang, as well as lying around in Lonely Girl's house in Escaped Chasm.
  • Celibate Hero: According to the relationship chart, she's not really interested in pursuing other people romantically.
  • Extra Eyes: The antennae hide a pair of eyes that show up sometimes, like when using her powers.
  • Flight: In the animation she has wings and can fly; doesn't seem to be part of her powers in the game continuity, as she was forced to rely on Claire's broom to get over a bottomless pit.
  • Multiple-Tailed Beast: Her tail forks in two at the end.
  • Scarf of Asskicking: Technically not a scarf, but the sweater she has in the animation and as a kid becomes this in the game. She did use to have an actual scarf, though.
  • Trademark Favorite Food: Cranberry juice. Zera is somewhat amused that she orders it at a sailor bar.
     Claire

Claire

https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/claire_4.png
Yoki's close friend and housemate. Also the local witch.
  • Bat People: Has bat-like wings, though only in the game continuity and she doesn't seem to be able to fly without her broom anyway.
  • Flying Broomstick: Wouldn't be a classical witch without one! Even offers Yoki a ride after she's done with her errand.
  • Incompatible Orientation: She has feelings for Yoki, who isn't interested in romance at all.
  • Screw This, I'm Outta Here: Left Aimottle alone to deal with a Beast-type.
  • Witch Classic: She's a witch that you would find in old folklore, with the cauldron to make stuff, flying broom and all.
     Aimottle

Aimottle

https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/aimottle.png
One of the other residents of the forest and friend of Yoki. She is a rabbit mechanic, and has a mechanical left arm.
  • Arm Cannon: She can fire bullets from the fingertips of her mechanical arm.
  • Artificial Limb: She's missing her left hand for whatever reason, and as such has a mechanical one to replace it.
  • Cute Little Fangs: She does sport one, though it's not always visible.
  • Wrench Wench: She is capable of fixing her mechanical arm all by herself.
     The Dragon

Currently unnamed

Click here to see its humanoid form
A dragon sent by Zera to cause chaos in the forest.
  • Breath Weapon: As per the usual of a dragon; it can manifest as a beam or as a projectile.
  • Extra Eyes: Has a second pair of smaller eyes above the first pair.
  • Familiar: Of Zera, before he became independent of him.
  • Loss of Identity: After Yoki's powers made him independent of Zera, he was lost about what to do with himself. His current goal is to destroy Zera (who saw him as something to be destroyed by Yoki), though Yoki also suggested to just enjoy the new life he was given.
  • No Name Given: Just referred to as the dragon. Justified as not only he is one of the many, he was created by Zera just to die, and probably doesn't actually have a name.
  • Uplifted Animal: Was just a familiar created by Zera to cause chaos (to attract Yoki and be killed by her), but was unintenionally given sapience and sentience when hit by Yoki's powers.
     Zera

Zera

https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/zera.png
A demon who has been plaguing Yoki with monsters and nightmares in the name of preparing for something coming in the near future.
  • Badass Cape: He sports a red one.
  • Color Motif: In Escaped Chasm he's entirely in orange, to contrast to everything else's blue and show him as not being native to this world at all.
  • Early-Bird Cameo: In Dwellers of the Mountain Forest, he shows up only in The Stinger revealing himself as the dragon's creator. He has more of an actual role in the games.
  • Nightmare Weaver: He's the one responsible for nightmares that Yoki has been having lately.
  • Stalker without a Crush: He shows up at Claire's house and in the ship's bar to talk to Yoki.
  • You Are Not Ready: Part of his plan involves making Yoki ready for whatever is gonna happen.

Characters introduced in Escaped Chasm

     Lonely Girl

Name not yet revealed

https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/escaped_chasm_girl.png
A girl who finds her parents not home for days.
  • Blind Without 'Em: She does not wear the glasses after transformation, which turns out to just make her crash into stuff.
  • Hikikomori: Not really the type that interacts with other much, mostly due to her lack of self-esteem.
  • Metamorphosis: Once she crossed the portal, she was turned into a wolf to adapt into the new world.
  • The Mind Is a Plaything of the Body: There is a large contrast in her personality as a human and after transformation into the wolf beast.
  • No Name Given: She's only referred to as Lonely Girl in the first game and Wolf Girl in the sequel.
  • Snakes Are Sinister: Subverted; her pet snake Melody is friendly even when it has become a giant beast in the new world.

  • Nature Lover: Possibly; he offers quite the commentary on various animals, if you interact with them when he's around.
  • Nice Guy: Although Yoki is noted to look kinda weird and scary, he trusts her anyway, even though they don't know each other.
     Este

Este

https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/etse.png
Yoki's boss at the post office.

A scavenger beast that has known Yoki for quite some time. Is relatively friendly, if you can look past the fact she wants to eat her after she dies.
  • Harping on About Harpies: Her Winged Humanoid body and the label used for her art assets in the files, "HarP", suggest she's supposed to be some kind of harpy.
  • Messy Hair: In contrast to every other character's hair who looks relatively neat, hers is a complete mess.
  • Random Event: Has a random chance of appearing behind Yoki's house in Dweller's Empty Path.

  • Blood Knight: She really wanted to fight Yoki after witnessing her strength, even if the latter didn't quite consent.
  • The Mind Is a Plaything of the Body: A textbook example of the Beast-type transformation effects; docile when in their animal form, not so much in the beast form.
     The Prince

Name not yet revealed

https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/prince_01.png
The current prince of the castle town as well as the surrounding kingdom. Took the throne after his parents were killed by a BEAST-Type.

  • Determinator: After you come back, you see them at the town inn; turns out they got defeated by the Dark Lord not the actual one, but the hero vows to attempt again.
  • Hero of Another Story: You don't see much of what they do; Claire laments you don't get to see much of their backstories.
  • The Mole: The beastly girl betrays the rest of her party, though it doesn't last.
