  • Generation Xerox: Looks and dresses exactly like a thirty-years-younger version of her mother.
  • Hidden Depths: There's a sensitive soul beneath that carefully groomed exterior.
  • Large Ham Title: Always introduces herself as "Ashley Dupree, of the Geor-gia Duprees."
  • The Nicknamer: Just about everyone is "honey" or "sugar." If she's feeling particularly affectionate toward someone, she'll upgrade it to "sugar pie."

  • Parental Issues: With both parents. His mother sent him to Breaker High due to her disapproval of his friends, but he doesn't get along much better with his father.

An academic overachiever from New York City.
  • Alone Among the Couples: The least likely member of the gang to have a romantic subplot with anyone, although she does have a few flirtations throughout the series.
  • Black and Nerdy: Although she doesn't usually dress like a nerd.
  • Go-Getter Girl: Always the first to volunteer for extra work and the last to participate in anything frivolous.
  • Ivy League for Everyone: Dreams of getting into Harvard more than anything else.
  • This Is No Time for Knitting: Snaps at Tamira for lapsing into TV references while ostensibly helping Denise prepare for an academic competition. Turns out one of those references was the answer to the tie-breaking question.
  • Token Black Friend: The only black member of the gang.

  • Foil: To Max. They're equally attractive and athletic, but Alex is funny, outgoing, and enthusiastic where Max is sarcastic, sullen, and withdrawn.

  • Sibling Rivalry: With his older brother, Lyle, mostly over a girl.
  • Will They or Won't They?: With Ashley, who remains involved with her hometown boyfriend for a long while.
