Somewhere, on a boat out on the horizon...

"I'M ON A BOAT, FUCK."
—Mako, shortly before her induction

The Cardian Syndicate is a custom Hunter Conspiracy within the world of White Wolf's New World of Darkness: Hunter the Vigil game. Cardians are members of a global criminal organization named so after their ranking system, which divides members into suits and numbers. They fight against supernatural creatures and monsters in order to protect humanity, though their methods may not always be 'lawful'.

The South East Asian/Pacific Division doesn't have a stationary headquarters: instead, the entire division is located on a giant warship that cruises between the islands in the south pacific region. The boat is always on the move from one mission to the next, always on the lookout for potential incidents and adversaries.

With two-thirds of the team members below the age of 25 (three of them being teenagers), Pacific probably has the distinction of having the youngest mean age out of all the Cardian divisions. However, that doesn't mean that they are any less capable of tackling threats on their own. Deals with fae, pirate invasions, and a mysterious eye cult with members spread across Asia— the Pacific team has more than their fair share of enemies on the horizon.

The team members themselves are as close as family, as thick as thieves. But will their teamwork stand up to months of voyages and fighting against? After all, one who fights monsters may find themselves becoming monsters as well...

...And just who is that masked merchant genie, anyway?

The campaign started in early August 2014 and rebooted in July 2015 after a series of hiatuses, ending with Christmas 2014 in-game time. The reboot has a cast of both returning characters and new characters, although their relationships and their respective backstories may have changed. Some characters from the original Cardians Pacific do not return. The reboot page can be found here.

â™  | 23 | Japanese/English | Human /Changeling
First Appearance: Tutorials

An antisocial computer university dropout turned vagabond and petty thief. She was inducted into the Cardians after a run-in with Sophie the genie and the Hedge. She spends most of her days alone in research or generally snarking at other people on the boat. Quick witted and sharp with a knack for fictional storytelling, her knowledge in the occult and her ability to see through Fae Glamour are her main assets. Just don’t ask her to promise anything.

  • The Alcoholic: Although she doesn't suffer from alcohol addiction and normally abstains from drinking in excess (her virtue is Temperance), she is known to retreat to the bar with a bottle of vodka when things get a little too overwhelming for her tastes.
  • Anti-Hero: Overlaps with Knight in Sour Armour at times.
  • Awesomenessby Analysis: Her duty as a Spade. She also has high Perception rolls.
  • Batter Up!: Her starting weapon was a metal baseball bat.
  • Blatant Lies: A primary character trait. Mako just doesn't know how to tell the straight truth.
  • Deadpan Snarker:
Jimmy: Uh, well, you flipped through a book and you started glowing and throwing black lightning bolts everywhere and Wilbur and Yusuke punched you a few times…
    Mako: The usual, then.
Jo: I was about to chuck a pack of throwing knives through your skull.
Mako: Wow, Kriss, I really appreciate that.
  • Delinquents: Not a complete one, but fits the general idea.
  • Demonic Possession: Became temporarily possessed by an evil witch early on in Season 1.
    • Powers via Possession: Whenever the witch completely took over, she gained the ability to fly and throw deadly bolts of cursed lightning.
  • The Ditherer: Tends to take a while making decisions.
  • Don't Tell Mama: Her mother Miyako still has no idea of what has happened to her over the course of the campaign; she still thinks Mako is studying in Tokyo.
  • Don't You Dare Pity Me!:

    Mako: I'm a fuck-up. Please acknowledge this.

  • Expository Hairstyle Change: Cut off her braids when she decided to drop out of university. Doubles as an Important Haircut.
  • Five-Finger Discount: Has the highest roll for pickpocketing.
  • Gender-Blender Name: 'Makoto' is a unisex Japanese name, though it is more commonly used by males.
  • Glamour Failure: for any Fae or Fae-related creatures in Mako's presence.
  • Green-Eyed Monster: Her vice is Envy.

     Saara Salonen

"MY STUFF!!!"

♦ | 16 | Finnish | Human
First Appearance: Tutorials

A tiny and adorable Finnish teenager who travels the world. She has a hoarding problem which compels her to cling onto any and every item that comes her way, though with time she’s slowly learning to cope with it. She has trouble understanding metaphor and sarcasm, and is the innocent apple of everyone’s eye. She also happens to be the team gunslinger, medic and weapons forger, with a slightly disturbing fascination with the colour red. The original Saara died from a gunshot and got switched to a living one from an alternative universe.

  • Adorably Precocious Child: The youngest member of the team, she was 15 when the campaign started.
  • Alternate Universe: The 'original' Saara was killed by a stray bullet. A Fae meddled with the timeline to switch her out to an alternate version of Saara from a universe where she stayed alive. The 'current' Saara does not belong in this timeline at all, and developed a derangement due to a sense of displacement.
  • Bad Liar: Does not like lying at all.
  • Badass Adorable: Ended up blowing the head off a crazed woman with a shotgun in her tutorial.
  • Beware the Honest Ones/Beware the Nice Ones: The first kill of the campaign was pulled off by a 15 year old.
  • Break the Cutie: Loses her things, separated from her brother and her family, and forced to work for a criminal organization to protect her loved ones from monsters... the world is not kind to Saara.
  • Child Soldiers
  • Children Are Innocent:

Saara: Dao, what are 'worldly desires'?

  • Creepy Child: Has a disturbing fondness for the colour red.
  • Cute and Psycho: And guns.
  • Face of an Angel, Mind of a Demon
  • Greed: Her vice. She spent a long time deciding whether or not to trade off her team members in exchange for a hoard of treasure.
  • I Am a Humanitarian: Was offered a delicious beef steak by a kindly woman in her tutorial. The woman turned out to be a psychopathic cannibal, and the steak wasn't beef at all...
  • I Have Brothers: One brother, Sampo Salonen. He spends half of Season 1 looking for her.
  • Improbable Age: She just turned 16 over the course of the campaign, and she's already slinging a gun around and crafting high-end technology.
  • Innocent Prodigy: Constructed a pair of high-tech night-vision goggles by hand.
  • Killer Rabbit: She has an adorable face, but she also has high rolls for firearms.
  • Littlest Cancer Patient: Her mother passed away from cancer, and it's implied that there is a high risk she could suffer from it as well.
  • Naïve Newcomer: Grows up into a Little Miss Badass with time.
  • Noodle Implements:

NPC: That door was locked! How did you get in here?!
    Saara: I watch Korean dramas!

  • Sarcasm-Blind
  • Small Girl, Big Gun: Was gifted a massive anti-material rifle that was almost as large as she was.
  • Start of Darkness: Gee, blood sure does have a pretty colour...
  • The Blacksmith: Has recently started studying weapons forging from Yubi. She created many cold-iron rings to protect her team members from Fae.
  • Token Mini-Moe
  • Wild Card
  • Wise Beyond Their Years: Has high crafts and medicine rolls, far beyond the expected capabilities of a teenager.
  • Wrench Wench

     Richter Alkahest
https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/32a99e6c5938b4c7741f016ad69ee587.png

"My mother would always tell me that you have to treat everyone with kindness, or the world will never be a better place."

♥ | 22 | American (German descent) | Human
First Appearance: Tutorials

Until recently, Richter was an aspiring Yale student with a strained relationship with his father. That was until he found out that his ‘dad’ was a Fetch all along. Richter is a charitable and kind young man, always looking after the younger members on-board as the ‘team mum’. He’s been put through a lot of stress lately, though, and anybody who harms his loved ones is in for a taste of the wrath he hides within. It looks like his family has a darker past than he imagined, for his grandfather long had business ties to Cheiron and the Agnus Dei.

  • The Atoner: He feels heavy guilt and responsibility for being caught in his Fae deal in Session 13.5.1, as well as his train of thought in the panic attack. He seeks to grow even stronger while closing off his own emotional issues. It grows worse when Dao has to give himself up to release Richter from his deal and release Richter's parents from their enslavement. Grows even further when he finds out the Alkahest Corporation has been committing crimes behind the public eye, before it was sold off by his father to Agnus Dei
    • His father had no idea that Agnus Dei was a cult at the time, and Agnus Dei has been using the remains of the Alkahest Corporation for their own ends. Richter is trying to get it back.

  • Badass Bookworm: Yale Student turned Cardian. Not quite a librarian, but has Striking Looks as well as high Intelligence.
  • Beware the Nice Ones: He's slow to get angry and bottles his emotions, but that bottle will turn into a Molotov Cocktail. Though lately he's been getting angrier more frequently.
  • Big Brother Instinct: He was the eldest of three to start off with, and then there's a number of younger kids on the boat.
  • Black Sheep: To an extent. All members of the Alkahest family are seemingly extremely successful or are prodigious freaks of nature. Richter is very normal in comparison, and it's a source of his impossible standards. His grandfather considered him one as well.
  • Break the Cutie: Session 5, Session 13.5.1 (Solo), after Dao's disappearance, Session 15 at Cheiron, Session RP/17 when he finds out Fetches have the real deal's soul and when he almost gets sold to a brothel.
  • Catchphrase: Kinda. Triggered near cats. "OHNOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO".
  • Character Development: He's become increasingly driven, hardworking, (and angry) and less prone to envy. That said, he is still prone to self-loathing.
  • Cheerful Child: Usually has a smile on his face.
  • Compelling Voice: On top of Striking Looks 4, he's rising to Distinctive Voice 4. The combination of physical beauty and the gentle voice (Saara likes the lullabies!) is going to add up to a rather monstrous default persuasion roll.
  • Even the Guys Want Him: Hit on by men and women alike. It's gotten so bad that there's an established Hit-On list for him, and that's before Striking Looks 4.
  • Fish out of Water: He's pretty sheltered and reserved compared to a lot of his teammates. A few others have noted that his high moral standard is not fitting with the Cardians.
  • Friend to All Children: He is closest to Saara, Yusuke, and Jo. He got very upset about the prospect of child experiments by the Cheiron Group.
  • Good Is Not Soft: He is a kind, generous, gentleman and is the team mom. The thing is, neither gentlemen or mothers should be taken lightly.
  • Green-Eyed Monster: He began with Envy as a vicc, but it was switched to Wrath.

  • The Heart: His virtue is Charity. With Dao now as a Changeling and Fetch and therefore no longer an active part of the main Pacific team, Richter literally is the only heart.

  • He Is Not My Boyfriend: With Dao.
  • Inferiority Superiority Complex: More or less tries to keep a more upright image to hide his awful inferiority complex.
  • Innocent Blue Eyes: It's been commented on a number of times, especially from those who hit on him.
  • It's All My Fault: Has a habit of taking all the blame on himself.
  • Lonely Rich Kid: He is sociable, but it appears that he never truly connected with others due to his self-hate.
  • Mama Bear: For the children and teenagers on board.
  • Momma's Boy: The most precious person in his life is his mother, Lily.
  • Now or Never Kiss: With Dao, when he offered himself to the Game Master Fae in exchange for Richter's parents.
  • Oblivious to Love: Forget-Me-Not from Abroad has been contacting him quite a bit...but it's only after her slip-up that Richter notices anything. Same with Dao until he started blushing really hard when he asked Richter out.
  • Parental Abandonment: It turns out that his father was a Fetch all along. Subverted when he finds out that his real father, now a Draconic Changeling who had been kidnapped to Arcadia and kept there for 12 years, is shown to love his family very much, and wanted to return to the mortal world.
  • Reasonable Authority Figure: Since he's regarded as the Team Mom, there's a number of people who respect his decisions. He's reasonable... most of the time.
  • Red Oni, Blue Oni: Blue, to Dao's red. they're now a couple.
  • Reluctant Warrior: Overlaps with Apologetic Attacker, though nowadays he's more willing to fight if it will protect people.
  • Scarf of Asskicking: Always seen wearing a scarf.
  • Self-Harm: Richter started off with a mysterious point of Lethal damage in Session 17. Only Yubi and Dao found out about it during the session, with the latter being afraid for Richter's health and sanity. The revelation that the Fetch has a part of the Changeling's soul shocked Richter and compiled unacceptable levels of stress and guilt considering Valerian killed his own Fetch, destroying a part of his own soul and considering how distant and cruel Richter wanted to be to the Fetch Dao for being a fake replacement.
  • Shared Family Quirks: As kind as his mother.
  • Sweet Tooth: Bakes cookies.
  • Team Chef: Yusuke and Emma are especially pleased with his cooking.
  • Team Mom: Cares for the well-being of the team and makes sure everyone gets along.
  • Tell Me About My Father: Sort of. When Richter finds out that the Alkahest family doesn't have the best reputation, he asks Darwin for info on his dad, his grandfather, and/or the family business.
  • Undying Loyalty: Once you earn an Alkahest family member's trust, it is well earned, and they'll do anything for you.
  • What the Hell, Hero?: He was caught out alone with the Game Master Fae when he finds out the Fae had both of his parents in her captivity. He panics and initially thinks of selling off Cardian members in exchange for his parents, and his final deal with the Game Master Fae instead was to bring 2 people he'd do anything for in exchange for his parents' freedom. He tries to make up for his panic attack by figuring out what to do but...
  • Wise Beyond Their Years: Richter has been mistaken for 27 to 30 years old when he is only 22. He is noted for being more mature than his actual age despite being older than only the teenagers of the team.
  • Workaholic: Always busy.

Otherwise an ordinary high school student, he and his best friend Tetsuo ended up in the Cardians after a ferry trip gone wrong. He may not be the brightest on-board, but he knows how to use his fists. He aspires to ‘be a shield’, to protect the people he cares about. Though arguably his greatest skills are his unwavering determination, fighting spirit, and the ability to befriend almost anybody with his simple but gently charisma.

"It's OK, still friend!".

♣ | 23 | Korean/Whatever Kaj is | Human
First Appearance: Tutorials

The team’s resident martial arts expert and one of the primary melee combatants on board. He strives to do whatever he can to defend his fellow teammates (or ‘best friends!’ as he calls them). Although originally appearing to be one of the more normal members of the team, his lust for battle, excitement over getting brutally injured, and warped way of thinking have confused and troubled his teammates to no end, as well as landed him with two curses.

  • Afraid of Their Own Strength: The Tree Curse on his arm gives him superhuman strength, but he's afraid of physical contact with others else the curse could hurt them.
  • All-Loving Hero: Everyone he knows is his best friend. Everyone.
  • Attack! Attack! Attack!: His initial response to most threats.
    Jimmy: I wanna punch it.
  • Big Eater: Really likes his snacks. His vice is gluttony and he tends to eat when stressed. Having the tree curse increases the amount of cookies he can eat to frightening levels.
  • Blood Knight: Fights everything.
  • Catchphrase: A pile of them in human form.
    • "Still Friends!"
    • "That was wild from start to finish!"
    • "Hella!"
    • "Bad vibes."
  • Combat Sadomasochist: Has no interest in hurting other people/things, but sure likes getting kicked in the face and stepped on.
  • Contagious Heroism: His heroic tendencies have been rubbing off onto Jo.
  • Deal with the Devil: Alongside Amir and Jo to rescue their fellow team members. The three of them must sacrifice a thousand souls in Lucifer's name to be freed.
  • Death Glare: The Lucifer Curse allows him to deliver a supernatural death glare that freezes people in place.
  • Diving Save: To catch Farrell in his tutorial.
  • Emotional Powers: The Tree Curse reacts to his emotions, both positive and negative.
  • Extreme Doormat: He once let Jo duct-tape him to the ship's deck once, 'just 'cuz'.
  • Follow in My Footsteps: He strives to be just like his mother.
  • Frequently-Broken Unbreakable Vow: About removing the Tree Curse, and after giving up on that, about never using it.
  • Friend to All Living Things: Even demons, sin-eaters and genies.
  • Generation Xerox: Is the spitting image of his mother.
  • Greater Need Than Mine: Insists on letting the others heal first, even though he is the one with the most amount of damage.
  • Hates Being Touched: A fraction of his massive repressive tendencies.
  • Heroic RROD/You Can Barely Stand: Dude just won't give up when it comes to combat.
  • Hollywood Healing
  • Horrible Judge of Character: Has the custom 'Overly Trusting' flaw, which prevents him from rolling for lie detection or empathy because he trusts people right off the bat.
  • Iconic Outfit: "Is that a Kim Possible cosplay?"
  • Idiot Hero: Only one intelligence dot and the 'Overly Trusting' flaw may contribute to his simplistic worldviews.
  • Mama's Boy: Has a lot of 'Mom issues'.
  • Manchild: No wonder everyone thinks he's still in his teens.
  • Nature Versus Nurture: A constant battle between his true self and the disciplines his mother installed in him.
  • Nightmare Fuel Station Attendant: Probably the least disturbed of the entire cast when it comes to unsettling supernatural things.
  • Not Afraid to Die: He's not a Death Seeker, but he doesn't value his own life very much.
  • Older Than He Looks: Most people guess he's about 14 at first.
  • Power of Friendship: Won't stop talking about it.
  • Power of Trust: Puts a lot of faith into trusting others, as well as the aforementioned 'Overly Trusting' flaw.
  • Shared Family Quirks: With his mother. They share Vice and Virtue, primary skill sets, physical traits, taste in art, music, and hobbies.
  • Spirited Competitor: Gee, he sure does love fighting.
  • Sweet Tooth: Always carries around a bunch of small honey packets in his trousers.
  • Tainted Veins: In its dormant state, the tree curse appears as black root-like marks on his left forearm. Dao thought it was a weird skin graft.
  • When All You Have Is a Hammer…: When all you have are your fists, everything becomes punchable.

Birth name: Jiu Jie

A Girl Scout and wanderer who ran away from home and ended up liberating a small Australian town from a demon lord, there is seemingly no end to Jo’s tricks and traps. Accompanied by a dingo spirit, she has deadly aim, a knack for manipulating others to get what she wants, and an opportunist attitude. She’s headstrong, but sometimes her plans land the team in a multitude of crazy situations. She, Jimmy and Amir are now cursed with a sacrificial demon pact with Lucifer. She and Dao are long lost siblings.

"Not the bacon!"

♦ | 44 | American | Human
First Appearance: Tutorials

On the outside, Wilbur is your average gruff, buff, tough, wrong-side-of-the-tracks biker. On the inside, he’s exactly that. But he’s also a family man who will fiercely defend his children and comrades. He supplements his good old fisticuffs with his knowledge of mechanics and engineering. He’s also known board for his love of beer, bacon, his unstoppable rage if you get on his bad side... and his love for little Saara.

  • Acrofatic: For someone who cannot see his feet, he is very light on them!
  • Action Dad: His fatherly instincts are often overwhelimg him, and acts accordingly, usually to swing himself to protect his "family"
  • Angst Nuke: Years of anger management made him more acceptable towards people, but his fuse is still pretty short (not to mention the bomb it's attached to is MASSIVE).
  • Badass and Child Duo: Technically, almost anyone and Wilbur can make that combo.
  • Berserk Button: Don't hurt his daughter or his teammates, especially Saara.
  • Big Damn Heroes: In this ragtag team of hunters, Wilbur represents the big guy, bringing some visual variety to the crew.
  • *Crack!* "Oh, My Back!": Joining the Cardians at the age of 44 hasn't been treating him in the best of ways.
  • Death Glare: "You can feel the piercing gaze of stern fatherly disapproval on your back"
  • Earn Your Happy Ending: Wilbur is a hard worker, and right now his main objective is to keep everyone alive enough to be able to return home, where ever it may be.
  • Gentle Giant: Tallest of the team at 6'4", and when he's not angry, he is everyone's father.
  • Guys Smash, Girls Shoot: Countering Jo's throwing abilities and Saara's shotgun using potential.
  • Hell Yes: If Wilbur likes something, he'll give a strong voice to that opinion.
  • Huge Guy, Tiny Girl: With Wilbur and Saara.
  • Let's Get Dangerous!: He may be a grown man, but he's very much in touch with his inner child. And that rascal hungers for excitement. And if that means jumping into a big fat brawl, or making some "drastic measures" happen, so be it.
  • Nice Job Breaking It, Hero: Wilbur's anger and moments of possession has caused some friendly fire. He's accidentally cut Saara's face while under the influence of a witch, and punched Richter and Yusuke while under the influence of a Minotaur's maze.
  • No One Gets Left Behind: Every team member is equally important, no matter their past actions. This applies heavily to Mako, since Wilbur once had to strike a deal with the Gransmaster Fae in order to save her from certain Doom.
  • Papa Wolf: The pack stays safe together under his guarding sight.
  • Real Men Eat Meat: His favorite food is bacon.
  • Stout Strength: Strength 5!
  • Team Dad: Counterpart to Richter's Team Mom.
  • The Big Guy: Less talking, more hitting.
  • The First Cut Is the Deepest: His wife's passing left the greatest emotional mark on Wilbur.
  • The Nicknamer
    • Mako: Bowlcut Girl
    • Saara: Little Miss, Missy
    • Richter: Tea Guy, Lad
    • Yusuke: Boy, "Mah boy"
    • Jimmy: Little Man
    • Jo: Scout, "Atta girl"
    • Dao: Pretty boy, prince
    • Helena: Smartypants
    • Emil: Weirdo
  • This Means War!: Revenge is sweet, and Wilbur has a big appetite.
  • World of Ham: If you want to make a point, say it and stand for it. If someone questions your point, SAY IT LOUDER!!!
  • You Wouldn't Like Me When I'm Angry!: No really, don't. His vice is wrath. Mess with the bull, get ready for the horns.

"Got tongue-tied by my beauty?"

♥ | 25 | Chinese | Human/Later turned Changeling
First Appearance: Tutorials

Once a gang member, Dao was thrown into the Cardians after a traumatic experience involving finding his mother dead, and the dreaded Hook. His main skills on the team were his sharp-shooting and his striking looks… that is, until he made a deal with a Fae to save Richter’s parents, sacrificing himself in the process. Now a Changeling, he’s was stuck in Arcadia under servitude of his Keeper, the Game Master Fae. The Changeling has forgotten everything about the boat and is beginning a slow recovery after being rescued by the team. He and Jo are long lost siblings.

  • And I Must Scream: Dao sacrificed himself to hands of the Game Master Fae in exchange for the freedom of Richter's parents, and by extension, Richter, from his Fae Deal. The result? He's had to play games with the Game Master for seemingly eternity, and was not allowed to neither leave nor to take a break. Games tend to range from fun and trivial to outright traumatizing, and if he died in-game, he'd be revived.
  • Artificial Human: His Fetch.
  • Be Careful What You Say: The conditions of Dao's deal was that he was to be released after 14 wins. The Game Master interprets this as leaving after the 14th win, no more, no less. He's won over 500 games. The team managed to steal him away though with the help of a genie.
  • Beware the Nice Ones: Dao will be your best friend. Well until he puts a bullet through your head.
  • Bishie Sparkle: Striking looks 4 activated. Looks like a fairy vomited all over the place.
  • Came Back Wrong: Kinda. The one that came back to the boat first was a Fetch, and the Changeling, after being rescued, isn't doing so hot. Either way, he's not human anymore.
  • Combat Pragmatist: Who needs rules of fair play when your life is on the line?
  • Demoted to Extra: As his player replaced one of the original Gms and as he sacrificed himself to Arcadia, Dao became an NPC.
  • Handsome Lech: Pervert.
  • Heroic Sacrifice: Offered himself to the Game Master Fae in place of Richter's parents.
  • Jerkass Has a Point: He can be such an asshole, but sometimes his assholery rings true?
  • Jerk with a Heart of Gold: He is such an asshole, but then on the other hand he will do everything to make you happy, and love you with everything he has, but then again he is SUCH AN ASSHOLE.
  • Killed Mid-Sentence: Well not necessarily killed, but he did shoot Norah as everyone was discussing how he shouldn't shoot her...
  • Identity Amnesia/Amnesiac Lover: Changeling Dao lost all of his memories of the boat, of himself, and his team during his stay in Arcadia. The team, namely Richter, Jimmy, and Jo, managed to jumpstart his memories to the point where he can remember everyone's names and a few memories of his past here and there, but most of his memories still remain lost for now. Fetch Dao on the other hand, has all memories of his life and his time in Arcadia, or at least up until the Fetch was created and released, with perfect clarity. Richter continues to attempt to recover Changeling Dao's memories and remind him of the ways of the Mortal World and humanity.
  • Lack of Empathy: Started off with a small dice pool for empathy but gets a good empathy dice pool as a Fetch and Changeling, especially with Richter for the former.
    • Despite the higher dice pool, the Changeling shows a very disturbing lack of touch with humanity and those around him.
  • Missing Mom: First she was dead, now she is in a coma, and Dao has no idea where she is now and everyone is crying.
  • Mr. Fanservice: Ready for a strip show any time ladies.
  • O.O.C. Is Serious Business: Dao isn't smiling? Apocalypse.
  • Pretty Boy: He is so god damn PRETTY. It's embarrassing for everyone involved.
  • Red Oni, Blue Oni: Red, to Richter's Blue.
  • Smells Sexy: As a Flowering Changeling, Dao has a lingering rose scent that is supposed to be a part of his blessing. The Fetch also had this when everyone thought he was the real Dao.
  • The Gunslinger: Guns? Guns!
    • The Changeling has forgotten how to use guns and uses a sword and shield instead.
  • The Unapologetic: He will not apologize, he will not regret. What is in the past, will stay in the fucking past.
  • The Unfettered: Morals are unnecessary if you have a goal, and there won't be anything that will stop him once he set his mind into something.
  • Trigger-Happy: He might be just a bit TOO happy to use his guns...
  • Vengeance Feels Empty: Lost his best friend in an altercation with the cops when he was a teen. Guess getting revenge won't bring back the people you love.
  • Violently Protective Boyfriend: Fetch Dao went into silent rage when he found out that some Yakuza members wanted to sell Richter to a brothel. Then, Fetch Dao punched the Changeling Dao when the Changeling Dao hit on Richter.
  • Wouldn't Hurt a Child: Okay. Maybe there is a line, although pulling a trigger is very easy...

First Appearance: Tutorials/Mission 11: Spa Short

A straightforward and no-nonsense psychologist from Finland. She had a stable life and job, but went abroad for some excitement- a decision which eventually landed her with the Cardians. She’s logical-minded and intelligent, but prefers mundane solutions and answers to supernatural ones and often ignores the latter for the former. Though she has a good memory, she’s terrible at reacting to new situations partly due to a chronic learning disability.

  • Badass Bookworm: Scientist and librarian that can break herself through walls.
  • Brainy Brunette: Complete with curly hair.
  • But for Me, It Was Tuesday: Helena is upset from just about everything that Emma does. For Emma it's everyday life.
  • Cats Are Magic: MÃ¥sse has been hinted to be this. Confirmed in Helena's and Emil's duo mission where MÃ¥sse started talking to Emil telepathically.
  • Comically Missing the Point
  • Conviction by Contradiction: Against Mako sometimes. She spends quite a lot of time picking up small clues and contradictions to figure out what's going on with her eyes. Eventually she found out the truth.
  • Deadpan Snarker: "Oh really now?"
  • For Science!: Helena used to work as a researcher and strives to do a study on something not yet discovered. Unfortunately, she seems to treat other people more as possible test subjects than real human beings. She is currently trying to investigate Jimmy's Tree Curse to figure out a cure for her team-mates.
  • Friendless Background: Hinted at now and then. She has never been exactly good at building friendships and it shows, as most of the boat currently do not have the best opinions of her.
  • Hartman Hips: Helena's body type is definitely a pear.
  • Lethal Chef: Helena stabbed herself in her tutorial while making a sandwich. She also made overly strong coffee and has busted a stove once. She's managed to make cookies, but only with Richter's help.
  • Locked Out of the Loop: Poor, poor Helena. Nobody likes her snooping. It's been getting better though.
  • Must Have Caffeine: She is a workaholic and a night owl. She pretty much needs coffee to kick herself going in the morning. She usually drinks Richter's coffee because her cooking is horrible.
  • My God, What Have I Done?: Helena's reaction to doing criminal things (like stealing books). Also gets hit hard with this trope when her fear caused her to use a blue shell in a Faerie Mario Kart race, resulting in a sequence of events that killed Saara twice. They have since reconciled somewhat.
  • No Social Skills: First time meeting someone? Ask for their major.
  • Not a Morning Person: Stays awake working to late at night, so this is what you get if you wake her up early and don't give her coffee.
  • Omnidisciplinary Scientist: Becoming this. She already has dots in academics, investigation, medicine, science and occult...
  • Pull the Thread: Her way of catching a lie. She is good at spotting contradictions too.
  • Pursue the Dream Job: Needed change to her secure job and life and jumped at the opportunity to work abroad... only to get recruited by a criminal organization.
  • Tantrum Throwing: Goes to gym to throw objects (and people) around when upset.
  • Team Killer: Accidentally causes Mako to die once and Saara to die twice in the Fae realm. This triggers guilt driven character development.
  • Techno Babble: Prone to this, especially when trying to explain things to other people. Taken up to eleven on the Halloween mission, where she dressed up as scientist and, due Halloween spirit shenanigans, got all her science and logic skills maxed out.
  • The Shrink: Has a degree in Psychology.
  • They Would Cut You Up: Mako has concerns that Helena might do this to her due to recently discovering that she is a human-changeling hybrid.

Mako:I appreciate your urgency, Lundberg. But remember that people aren't merely to be treated like experiments. I sure as hell wouldn't like to end up strapped to an operating table with you holding the scalpel.
Helena:That's what Yubi told me too. Oh, and you don't have to worry about that, Mako. I usually prefer non-invasive procedures.

  • Weirdness Censor/It's Probably Nothing: Helena dismisses most supernatural antics by attempting to find a scientific explanation for it. She also dismisses any supernatural instances going on with her cat.
  • Workaholic: Dislikes participating in non-work related events and activities.
  • You Are Fat: Her weight has been picked on several times. Emma, Jo and Emil are the most common offenders.

"...Ya know what? I said plenty. Way more than ya earn. I need to get stuff done. Actually make stuff happen."

♦ | 29 | Australian | Human
First Appearance: Tutorials/Mission 12: Board Game Fun Fun

Emil used to make a living from being a shady, streetwise medical equipment dealer. Now he’s a shady, streetwise Cardian. He collects butterflies, is a surprisingly good artist, and is often the designated team driver, but he’s still a sleazy trickster with a penchant for pranks and mischief. He does care for the people he’s close to, however, particularly his brother Julian who went missing long ago, at least, until he finds his journal.

  • Book Dumb
  • Butt-Monkey: Has been turned into a child, turned into Waluigi, nearly blew himself up with a bazooka, has had a Genie kick him out of her shop... etc. etc.
  • Cluster F-Bomb: "Friggin'...frig...bloodyfukfug...sheessshgbrbgbgbrr!!"
  • Combat Pragmatist: Plays a game of Smash Brothers with Yusuke. Knocks the controller out of his hands to turn the game into a draw.
  • Confusion Fu
  • Don't You Dare Pity Me!: Emil despises being dependant on others, especially after finding his missing brother's journal. He's trying to research on his own.
  • Expository Hairstyle Change: Emil's hair grew long after he was 'magically' turned from a child (during the cross-over session with Abroad) back into an adult. He has since kept the longer hair. It basically marks his entry into the Cardians.
  • In Harm's Way: For the sake of adrenaline.
  • It's Personal: Emil's attitude towards Cheiron. They killed his best friend, Everett, and used him as an experiment.
  • Jerk with a Heart of Jerk
  • Locked Out of the Loop: It's hard to take this guy seriously. He doesn't get informed about certain things with the excuse "You Are Not Ready" The main offender was being uninformed about rescuing Changeling Dao from the Hedge, (or that the Fetch Dao was not human in the first place. Since he's been like a runt all his life, this results in Rage Against the Mentor.
  • Nominal Hero: Annoyance and Boredom apply here, with a sprinkle of reward.
  • Opportunistic Bastard
  • Parental Neglect: Both Emil and his brother, Julian, had to take care of themselves beyond food and sleep.
  • Pastimes Prove Personality: Catching and pinning butterflies is an odd hobby of Emil's that he picked up as a child.
  • Real Men Wear Pink: He has a butterfly-catching hobby.
  • The Prankster: Put soap on a plank, made a 'chocolate' cake out of vegemite, throw paint-filled balloons...
  • Token Evil Teammate: Downplayed. Not 'Evil' so much as 'has his own moral grounds'.
  • Weak, but Skilled: Emil has a case of mysethenia, or muscle weakness, so has to be a Combat Pragmatist and resort to Confusion Fu and his craft improvising for impact.
  • Working Through the Cold: The tree curse he got from his tutorial has put him under the weather as time progressed.

The laid-back, booze-drinking Ace of Clubs. Emma does what she wants, when she wants, and that something usually involves lazing about and/or throwing unwitting people overboard. When push comes to shove though, she will stand by her team members and will take on her responsibilities properly.

He’s also got a pretty nice closet.

    Yubi Li

"...I can't let something like this ever happen again."

♦ | 500+ | Chinese | Immortal
First Appearance: Mission 14: Swan Song (Post-Session)

Perhaps the most badass grandmother to ever set foot on the ship. Ai’s grandmother, a master of forging weapons, and Emma’s trainer/master. Currently teaches Saara how to forge weapons, a skill she learnt back in the 1500’s.

    Norah Darceleigh

"Back when I was still a freshling under the Cardians, all I evver felt was hatred. Hatred towards the supernaturals for what they have done to me. Now that I am here, I do and don't regret being a member here. All I can do now is fulfill Perry's vision...which is to make a difference despite the harsh reputation this organization has."

Last Appearance Mission 14: Swan Song

The Ace of Spades, and the de facto leader of the entire division. She acts like a mother to Perry, though has a strained relationship with her biological son Orphie. She’s usually intelligent and composed, but when angered her rage hits like a typhoon. Well technically, it’s two shotguns. Don’t anger Norah. She eventually retired to a different division along with her family and Perry.

    Amparo 'Perry' Gatan

"I really like it here. This is my second home where Norah-Ma took me in and my friends. I know I fucked up a lot, and that caused a lot of casualties but....this is the only family that accepted me, cared for me, and nurtured me into what I am today. I promise you, this Division will start a change for the Cardian's reputation."

â™  | 16 | Japanese | Human (Possessed by Kiyoko)
First Appearance: Tutorials

Yusuke’s childhood friend, troubled by ghost possessions and overwhelming emotions. He came onto the Cardians boat with Yusuke when the Australia-bound boat got lost and got attacked by zombies, led by Kiyoko. Kiyoko has since possessed Tetsuo, and Tetsuo has been trying to fight her influence.

  • Butt-Monkey
  • Childhood Friends: With Yusuke.
  • Death Flag: Because of Kiyoko's influence, it's very likely that Tetsuo will not live long unless there is either a successful intervention or Tetsuo manages to keep his sense of self altogether. Even in the case of the former, there is a chance for severe failure. Yusuke was given the choice on what to do with him and Kiyoko, and he chose to always try to remind Tetsuo of who he is so that no one will get hurt trying to step in on Tetsuo's behalf.
    • Another death flag was when the Game Master Fae, then showing up as the Gae Fae, failed to bring forth a future version of Tetsuo.
  • Demonic Possession: Via Kiyoko. When Kiyoko possesses him during battle, he has enhanced combat ability and the ability to turn enemies against each other.
  • Humiliation Conga: After the Halloween Mission, when he dressed as the Cheshire Cat, he got stuck with a pair of cat ears thanks to a Holiday Spirit.
  • Katanas Are Just Better: His primary weapon.
  • Little Bit Beastly

  • Ordinary High-School Student: Or at least, started off as such.

When Saara fails to show up at their meeting place after she had joined the Cardians, he spends much of his time trying to look for her. Lawyer | 38 at kidnapping, 50 chronologically | American (German descent) | Changeling
First Appearance: Tutorials

Richter's distant father. When Richter was 10, he was kidnapped by a Fae and subsequently replaced by a Fetch and turned into a Draconic Changeling. He eventually ended up in the servitude of the Game Master Fae until he was released through Dao's deal with the Game Master Fae. He has joined the Cardians as a Changeling who is unable to go home, and has revealed to Richter the true nature of the Alkahest Corporation, one that he wished to prevent Richter from inheriting for his protection. He also hints at Fetch Dao's true nature as a Fetch.

    Liliane 'Lily' Alkahest

"Please, save Richter."

Retired Orphanage Manager | 46 | French | Human

Richter's beloved mother. A year prior to Richter joining the Cardians, she fell ill with leukemia, forcing her to retire. She was later kidnapped by the Game Master Fae as a bargaining chip for her husband, Valerian. She remained in the Game Master Fae's servitude as her songstress until she was released through Dao's deal with the Game Master Fae. After some time of recovery, she was allowed to return home, giving Richter her lily pin.

    Amelie Toofer

University Student | 21 | American | Human
First Appearance: Tutorials

Wilbur's beloved biological daughter. She was kidnapped and experimented on by Cheiron, and was infused with the Tree Curse. She was eventually rescued and cured, and in order to protect her, Wilbur chose to have her memories of the incident erased, and joined the Cardians.

This Roleplay provides examples of:

  • Abandoned Laboratory: An old Cheiron Group research lab located in the wilderness somewhere in Thailand. It turned out to be full of mutated genetic experiments.
  • Absurdly Spacious Sewer: The team once woke up in a basement and sewer level of an old hospital, that housed a giant writhing pile of monster snakes.
  • Alien Abduction: To Mako and Yusuke, courtesy of a cute little Blob Monster.
  • Artifact of Doom: Several.
    • The Witch's Diary Mako stole from her hut was revealed to contain some of her malicious psyche.
    • A plant called the 'Reaperthorn', said to exist in an alternate dimension. It is said to be able to wipe out the Tree Curse, but entire ecosystems as well.
  • Artificial Human: Fetches, the makeshift puppets that are left behind by Fae after they kidnap humans. Richter's father turned out to be one. Dao has one as well.
  • Revenge: Kiyoko's modus operandi against Agnus Dei, the cult who sacrificed her.
  • Awesome Backpack: Wilbur made one for Saara, with love. It's almost as large as she is.
  • Badass Adorable: Yusuke, Saara, and all of the other members who are still teenagers or younger.
  • Bash Brothers
  • Bishie Sparkle: Three out of the original ten members possess the Striking Looks merit.
  • Barred from the Afterlife: The ghost of a boy who couldn't move on, as his favourite toy was stuck in the Hedge.
  • Be Careful What You Say: Fae have the power to bind fate to the spoken word. Even innocuous requests must be worded carefully.
  • Casts No Shadow: How Mako discovers that a recently-returned Dao is a Fetch.
  • Cats Are Magic: Helena's Cat Masse has a habit of appearing and disappearing in was that normal cats shouldn't be able to. Also, it's telepathic.
  • Cats Are Mean: Masse doesn't like Emil very much. She flat-out states that she prefers Helena over him, to his face.
  • Color Motif: Each team member is associated with a colour, for thematic and organization purposes.
    • Mako: Green
    • Saara: Yellow
    • Richter: Blue, but switched to red when things got serious.
    • Yusuke: Red
    • Jimmy: Black
    • Jo: Orange
    • Wilbur: Dark Green
    • Dao: Lavender
    • Helena: Purple
    • Emil: Brown
  • Continuity Reboot: After a series of hiatuses resulting in Continuity Snarl from various loose plot threads, the entirety of the campaign underwent a total reboot. Whilst some characters are returning, many have their histories, skills and personalities re-tooled. Both they and a few new characters began the campaign again from scratch with familiar, albeit altered circumstances.
  • Cool Boat: The Pacific Division headquarters.
  • Crossover: With the Abroad Division. They blew up the Tokyo Tower.
  • Curse: A few. Tree Curse, which is a parasitic plant-like spirit infection that feeds off emotions. There's also the Hell Curse (known as the Luci-Pact) which can only be lifted by sacrificing a thousand souls. Jimmy has both.
  • Darkness Equals Death: One mission involved a trek through the dark engine room of the ship, to repair it during a blackout. The engine room turned out to be swarming with snake monsters.
  • Death Glare: Mako managed to pull one off at one of the snake monsters, scaring it away.
  • Deal with the Devil: More than once.
    • Saara comes close to making one with a Jackass Genie: trade away her teammates for a mountain of treasure.
    • Wilbur mistakenly trades his daughter Amelie off to the Fae, but they manage to take it back.
    • A very literal example when Amir, Jo and Jimmy make a pact with Lucifer himself to get their team out of Hell.
    • Richter attempts to rescue his kidnapped mother and father from a Fae by promising two people in return. Dao ends up volunteering himself instead.
  • Demonic Possession: To Mako, courtesy of the Witch.
  • Desert Island: In the very first episode, a bunch of team members are led overboard by sirens and wake up stranded.
  • Disappeared Dad: Valerian Alkahest and Alfred Faust. Both of them are Changelings.
  • Doppelganger: Fetches appear to be an exact copy of the original kidnapped human. Richter's encounter with both his Changeling and Fetch fathers led to a case of Spot the Imposter.
  • Dungeon Crawl: A few missions have been played using a traditional top-down grid format.
  • Escaped from the Lab: A hoard of dangerous Cheiron experiments released from the abandoned facility in Thailand.
  • Exact Words: "500 games. He passed that amount years ago."
  • Eye Scream: The fate of the sleeping hospital patients. They had their eyes gouged out by a cult fanatic.

  • For Science!: The Cheiron Group's MO.
  • Genie in a Bottle: Or to be more precise, a Genie in a Snowglobe.
  • Ghost Town: The island Yusuke and Tetsuo visited in Yusuke's tutorial.
  • Grey-and-Grey Morality: Who are the good guys? The Cardians are criminals, after all. However, a few character interactions between the characters and staff have revealed that despite their status as a crime syndicate, the Aces care about their team very much.
  • "Groundhog Day" Loop: Perry put the entire team in a loop in order to save his fellow Aces from a malicious Mage.
  • Halloween Episode: Brought to you by the spirit of Holidays itself. It came back again for Pocky Day.
  • Happy Flashback: To Mako of her family before her father fell into a coma.
  • Heroic Sacrifice: Princess Anne asked Richter to Mercy Kill her to free her people from evil pirates. Dao also offers himself to the Game Master Fey in exchange for Richter's parents.
  • Human Chess: One mission has the team revert into childhood and play a life-sized game of checkers.
  • Innocuously Important Episode: Session 10.5. Mako and Wilbur get stuck in a fairytale land and re-enact a story Wilbur wrote for his daughter. They were in Arcadia the whole time, in the realm of the Fae who is keeping Mako's father prisoner.
  • Land of Faerie: Arcadia, realm of the Fae.
  • Literal Genie: 'Sophie'. When Mako asked to be on a boat out of Japan, she put her on a literal rowboat in the middle of nowhere.
  • Mad Scientist Laboratory: Cheiron's buildings and research labs all carry a morally questionable vibe.

  • Mineral MacGuffin: The 'Firestone', a red-hot jewel of great power. The team had to retrieve it from the clutches of a Jackass Genie. They got the stone back safe and sound, but its purpose or the needs for the Aces to obtain it are still unknown.
  • Missing Mom: Jane Kim, until she shows up unexpectedly in Jimmy's tutorial.
  • Nice Job Breaking It, Hero: Multiple times. The majority of them can be traced back to Mako's actions, up to and including:
    • Accidentally releasing Cheiron experiments into the wild by overriding the lockdown that kept them enclosed.
    • Trying to outsmart a bridge troll, angering it and putting lives at risk.
    • Holding onto the Witch's cursed diary for too long, allowing the Witch to possess her and wreak havoc amongst the team.
  • Ocean Punk: The main setting for most non-mission scenarios is somewhere adrift on the pacific ocean.
  • Pirates: A whole invasion of them, complete with swashbuckling outfits, pirate speak and treasure.
  • Playing with Syringes: The Cheiron Group mostly, but also by the Diamonds when they reverse-engineered their creations.
  • Puppeteer Parasite: The Tree Curse: it drains the host of nourishment and feeds off their emotions.
  • Robinsonade: The first mission had everyone scramble around for resources and navigation on a deserted island. Then they found out that it wasn't so deserted after all.
  • Screw Destiny: Since the powers of Fae revolve around fate and destiny, every attack against them could be seen as this.
  • Skeleton Crew: The team becomes one of these during their trip to Hell.
  • Stringy-Haired Ghost Girl: Kiyoko.
  • Traveling at the Speed of Plot: One session takes place per week in real-time, but the spaces between missions in-game can be anything from two months to later the same day.
  • Temple of Doom: An ancient temple that housed mountains of treasure and ancient enchanted artefacts, guarded by a bound genie.
  • The Ace: The four Aces are a literal example. There's also Aiko, the Queen of Clubs.
  • The Family for the Whole Family: A running joke amongst all Cardians players is that the Pacific Divison is the 'easy mode' division, due to the general friendliness of the player characters involved. As for what actually happens in-session, however...
  • The Hedge of Thorns: The Hedge, a mythical border plane between the mortal world and Arcadia. It tears away at mind and soul, and is overall not a fun place to be.
  • The Little Shop That Wasn't There Yesterday: 'Sophie's chain of wish-stores which, like their owner, have a habit of popping up everywhere when you least expect it.
  • The Power of Friendship: Many would-be boss fights have ended due to successful attempts at diplomacy. The team have gained a large group of NPC s because of their friendliness.
  • The Shrink: Helena, though she's a medical psychologist rather than a therapist. It doesn't stop anyone else on the boat from treating her like one.
  • Town with a Dark Secret: Jo passed by a small town in Australia in her travels, but ended up liberating it from a demon lord. There's also Summercliff and Winterhollow, two more Australian towns which appear to be more than simple truck stops.
  • Treasure Hunt Episode: Episode 3: The hunt for the Firestone.
  • Treasure Map: Pulled out from a giant fish's stomach. Sophie had something to do with it.
  • Unfinished Business: Kiyoko against Agnus Dei.
  • Yaoi Fangirl: Zombie fangirls. A whole crowd of them attack Tetsuo and Dao in Tokyo.
  • Zombie Apocalypse: Yusuke's tutorial, where a hoard of zombies was created purely out of Kiyoko's wrath.
    • Also, the aforementioned Yaoi Faingirls.
