  • Actually, I Am Him: In the season four finale, Silas reveals to Stefan that he is in fact Silas, the very first immortal being. Silas then reveals to Stefan that he created the immortality spell and as a consequence, a doppelgänger line was created for Silas. Silas revealed to Stefan that Stefan is his shadow self or doppelgänger.
  • Alas, Poor Villain: When Silas dies and crosses over to the Other Side where he ends up trapped with Qetsiyah for eternity and separated from his true love Amara forever (who had died and crossed over to the afterlife and found true peace), one can't help but feel sorry for Silas. He spent 2,000 years starving and fossilizing in darkness as an immortal being, an immortal and eternal life that Silas wanted to spend with Amara in the first place, and all his suffering and misery turned out to be for nothing in the end as he didn't even find true peace with his soulmate in the end.
  • All for Nothing: Exaggerated. Silas starved and desiccated while being entombed in darkness for over 2,000 years and resisted the cure for immortality in order to not become a mortal, die and cross over to the Other Side so that his soul would be eternally trapped with Qetsiyah, all out of his strong love and devotion for and to Amara. Silas was eventually freed by the Mystic Falls gang so that he would roam freely on Earth and possibly unleash hell upon Earth. Silas caused much chaos, destruction and turmoil for many Mystic Falls residents all because he wanted to take the cure, become mortal again, have Bonnie drop the Veil to the Other Side, destroy the Other Side permanently and die so that Silas could be reunited and find peace with his true love Amara in the afterlife. Unfortunately, none of this happened. Qetsiyah brought herself back to life from the Other Side, planning on finishing what The Brotherhood Of The Five couldn't accomplish 1,000 years ago, which is the mission for them to find Silas, cure him and kill him so that he would end up on the Other Side with Qetsiyah for all time. After Silas took the cure and became a warlock once more, Silas discovered that Amara was not actually dead, and was instead, used by Qetsiyah as the physical anchor to the Other Side. Silas and Amara reunite after 2,000 years, their dreams of being together for eternity as immortals shattered forever. Amara consumes the cure and becomes a mortal human again. Silas and Amara confess their love for each other but Amara tells Silas that even though she strongly loves him, her desire to die and find true peace is just as strong. Silas understands and Amara pleads for Silas to kill her himself and end her 2,000 year plus suffering. Silas ends up being killed by Stefan, his doppelgänger and distant descendant, after he is stabbed in the chest with a knife. As a result, Silas ends up dying and crossing over to the Other Side and sadly, Silas spirit passes through Amara before he goes to the Other Side. With Silas now dead, Amara realizes that she truly has nothing to live for adding to the fact that she has lived 2,000 years of suffering, pain and misery. Amara tells a dead Silas that their eternity will start after she dies, hoping that she will finally find true peace with her soulmate after 2,000 years. Amara stabs herself with the same knife and dies. Unfortunately, Silas crossed over to the Other Side and Amara died and found true peace in the afterlife, meaning that Silas and Amara ended up separated in death. To make matters worse, Qetsiyah kills herself and dies, crossing over to the Other Side so that she could be with Silas after she transferred the anchor from Amara to Bonnie. This means that Silas endured over 2,000 years of suffering and misery only to not end up finding true eternal peace with Amara. This means that Qetsiyah managed to achieve her 2,000 year goal: Silas and Amara being separated for all time. Tragic.
  • Ambition Is Evil: Silas's ruthlessness, ambition and determination to be reunited with his true love in death comes at the cost of tragedy, death, suffering, pain, torture, hurting others and wreaking havoc.
  • And I Must Scream: He's been imprisoned alive for two millennia, and has been going through desiccation much like vampires do. By the time Bonnie and Jeremy find him, his body has stopped desiccating and is now fossilizing.
  • Anguished Declaration of Love: With Amara in 5.07. Silas tells Amara that he loves her and Amara tells Silas that she loves him. Amara asks Silas to kill her in order to relieve her of 2,000+ years of suffering due to being the physical anchor for the Other Side.
  • Anti-Villain: Silas is mixture of Type I/Type II. Yes, Silas is the Big Bad and the currently villain of the series, but when one looks back at Silas's history, one can understand why he became such an evil person. Silas's true love, Amara, was brutally murdered by Qetsiyah before he could do anything to stop her. On top of it, Qetsiyah entombed Silas in darkness to starve and dessiccate for eternity, all because Qetsiyah was incredibly jealous, vengeful and hateful and couldn't handle the fact that Silas loved someone else and not her. If this happened to anyone, it is almost certain that that person would turn hateful, vengeful and warped.
  • Apocalypse Maiden: Silas is willing to destroy the world if it means being reunited with his true love in death. Professor Shane even said that if Silas rises, "it would be the end of the world and he will wreak havoc."
  • Arch-Enemy: Qetsiyah. Silas strongly hates her. She brutally murdered his true love, Amara and then entombed him in darkness to starve for eternity.
  • Artifact of Attraction: The cure for immortality, which was buried along with Silas for over two thousand years. Many characters in the series (including The Originals, Elena, Stefan, Jeremy, Damon, Katherine, etc) were basically at war over the cure for the course of the fourth season, so much that some were willing to wake Silas and raise the possibility of him wreaking havoc in order to obtain the cure.
  • Asshole Victim: Silas became a immortal all in the name of love but because he betrayed both nature and Qetsiyah, he ended up starving and desiccating underground for over two millennia instead of being with his true love Amara and spending an immortal life and eternity with her.
  • Awesomeness by Analysis: Silas knows exactly how to get under people's skin easily, probably because he can easily read other people's minds and know what they are thinking on the spot.
  • Ax-Crazy: Silas is downright sociopathic and psychotic, albeit in a cold and restrained way.
  • Back from the Dead: More like being risen from being buried alive for over two thousand years.
  • Badass Boast: He constantly reminds others that he can torture them whenever he wants and will always be one step ahead of them. The hell of it is that, so far, he's right.
  • Badass in Distress: Silas was entombed while starving for over 2,000 years.
  • The Bad Guy Wins: Instead of Silas dying, Bonnie ends up dead and because of her death, the spell which she cast on Silas which turned him to stone, ended up being broken. So Silas ends up being alive and well and roaming the earth. If that isn't bad enough, Silas ends up locking Stefan (his doppelgänger) in a safe and throwing the safe off a cliff into the water, where Stefan will repeatedly drown underwater while he starves and desiccates the same way that Silas did for two millennia. To make matters worse, Silas will be posing as his doppelgänger during season five and nobody will be able to tell that Stefan is suffering, drowning and starving while being locked in a safe underwater.
  • Bad Samaritan: Silas pretended to care about Bonnie by helping her control her magic, but he was just using and manipulating her in order to get what he wants.
  • Bad Powers, Bad People: Silas uses his powers to manipulate and torture others without any remorse.
  • Batman Gambit: Silas always knows what everybody is planning and he is always one step ahead of everyone else. Nobody can manipulate or deceive him without him finding out the truth. Silas can also manipulate others into getting them to do exactly what he wants.
  • Battle Couple: With Qetsiyah during 1st Century B.C. Silas and Qetsiyah were the most powerful witches amongst a group called The Travellers.
  • Battle of Wits: Versus Qetsiyah of course. Both Silas and Qetsiyah are the most powerful witches in the series who are constantly trying to outsmart each other.
  • Bavarian Fire Drill or : Briefly tried to pose as his doppelgänger, Stefan at the beginning of season five while trying to cause much chaos in Mystic Falls in a discreet manner.
  • Be Careful What You Wish For: Desired immortality so that he could be with Amara for eternity, only to end up being separated from his true love, entombed in darkness and starving for two millennia as an immortal creature.
  • Beauty Is Bad: Silas is a villain who you are supposed to hate but he is so physically attractive that you can't help but love him at the same time.
  • Became Their Own Antithesis: Silas went from being a gifted, powerful warlock who was relatively happy to a vengeful, hateful, malevolent immortal creature who suffered for over 2,000 years while being entombed in darkness, starving and fossilizing.
  • Because Destiny Says So: Silas was destined to be with Amara, his One True Love. Silas, as well as Qetsiyah, also says that the Universe wants his and Amara's doppelgängers (i.e. Stefan and Elena) to be together.
  • Being Tortured Makes You Evil: Being entombed in darkness for over two thousand years while starving and desiccating (to the point of fossilization) was clearly the perfect recipe for a very hateful, psychotic, and vengeful villain indeed.
  • Belligerent Sexual Tension: With Qetsiyah.
  • Berserk Button:
    • DO NOT betray Silas or try to outsmart him. You'll regret it.
    • Also don't ever call him a vampire. He thinks vampires are a perversion of what he is.
    • DO NOT hurt or harm his true love Amara in any way, shape or form. He will get revenge and HE WON'T STOP. When Qetsiyah appeared to have "killed" Amara in the flashbacks, Silas went completely and totally berserk and was extremely enraged. He was going to kill Qetsiyah on the spot.
  • Betty and Veronica: The love triangle between himself, Qetsiyah and Amara. Silas is the Archie to Amara's Betty and Qetsiyah's Veronica.
  • Big Bad Ensemble: Silas and Qetsiyah in season five.
  • Big "NO!": When Silas discovers that Qetsiyah cured and killed Amara, Silas goes completely berserk and loses it.
  • Black Cloak: Silas wore one in his illusionary monstrous form.
  • Blood Magic: Once he's ingested someone's blood, he can appear to them in the guise of people that are important to them. And if he's had all of their blood, he can take on their own appearance at will, as Professor Shane found out. Once he ingests enough blood to regain his full powers, he can appear as literally anyone.
  • Bodyguard Crush: Silas was in love with Amara, a poor girl who was Qetsiyah's handmaiden.
  • Boy Meets Girl: Silas meets Amara and falls in love with her instantly.
  • Break the Cutie: In regards to every single character on the show. Silas has tormented and tortured nearly every single character one way or another, either directly or indirectly. And he's just getting started.
  • Break the Haughty: Silas does this to Klaus. First, Klaus gets his ass handed to him, and then Silas stabs him in the back with Rebekah's white oak stake, breaking it off in the process. In the next episode, Klaus is in excrutiating pain, using a pair of pliers to tear his back open in a futile attempt to get the stake out before the splinter can reach his heart. Then Caroline arrives, Klaus begs her to help...only to find out that it's Silas again, who promises to fill Klaus' days with nothing but misery and torment until he gets him the cure for immortality. And when the real Caroline shows up, Klaus is curled into a foetal position on the floor, completely fucking terrified, still in pain and begs Caroline - whom he thinks is still Silas - to leave him alone. Not even Mikael could reduce Klaus to a snivelling, pleading wreck the way Silas had done.
  • Breakout Villain: Silas seems to be shaping up to be this, in the same fashion as Klaus and Katherine.
  • Brought Down to Badass: Silas became mortal once again after he consumed thee cure from Katherine's blood. However, even though he lost his abilities as a powerful immortal being, he was still a very powerful warlock once he was cured of his immortality after 2 millennia.
  • Brought Down to Normal: In 5.05, Silas drained a human Katherine of her blood, which contained the cure for immortality, therefore, Silas is now a warlock once more and a mortal being.
  • Brutal Honesty: Says exactly what is on his mind, albeit highly sarcastically.
  • Came Back Strong: An inversion. After Silas consumed Jeremy's blood as well as the blood from blood banks, Silas is now at his strongest and most powerful. The more blood that Silas consumes, the more powerful he becomes.
  • Canon Foreigner: Silas doesn't exist in the book series, although his character could be an expy of The Old Ones, the oldest, most dangerous and most ancient vampires in the novel series. In fact, Silas could be seen as the show equivalent of book!Klaus.
  • Card-Carrying Villain: Silas is a powerful villain and purely evil...and he makes this known to everyone.
  • Cartwright Curse: Silas DOES NOT have good luck with love and romance.
  • The Casanova/Chick Magnet: Silas seemed to attract plenty of women during his mortal life. His best friend, Qetsiyah, was in love with him to psychotic and obsessive levels, so much that she actually murdered another woman who was also in love with Silas. Ironically, his doppelgänger Stefan seems to have the same gift of attracting the opposite sex and having women fall in love with him, sometimes to obsessive levels.
  • The Champion: For Amara.
Silas to Amara in 5.03: "Just as you are mine, I am yours forever."
  • The Charmer: Silas is rather charming and persuasive. All in part of being a Manipulative Bastard.
  • Charm Person: Silas is able to manipulate and control others with the use of his very powerful psychic abilities in order to get others to do what he wants. This is what makes Silas currently the most dangerous character in the series universe.
  • Childhood Friend Romance: With Qetsiyah. They seemed to have grew up together and they were best friends before they became engaged.
  • Chivalric Romance: With BOTH Qetsiyah and Amara during 1st century B.C.
  • Complete Immortality: Not only is Silas immortal, but there is literally nothing that can weaken or kill him. Except the cure for immortality.
  • Consummate Liar: Silas is very good at lying and manipulating others in order to get them to do what he wants, most notably Bonnie.
  • Corrupt the Cutie: Does this to Bonnie many times by getting her to delve into dark magic.
  • The Corrupter: To basically everyone, but primarily to Bonnie.
  • Courtly Love: With Qetsiyah during 1st century B.C.
  • Cultured Badass: Silas is from 1st Century B.C. and therefore, he is highly sophisticated and cultured. He also seem to have come from a wealthy family from what is seen in the flashbacks.
  • Crazy-Prepared: Silas is always one step ahead of everyone else. Literally nobody can defeat him.
  • Crusading Widower: Silas's true love was brutally murdered and now he is willing to do absolutely anything, including wreaking havoc and causing destruction, in order to be reunited with her in death.
  • Curb-Stomp Battle: Gives one to Klaus, who until now has been the most powerful supernatural being. As if he wasn't dangerous enough already. Then he follows it up with psychological torture, appearing to torment him in the shape of Caroline and making him hallucinate that he's dying from having the white oak stake lodged in his spine.
    • He gets his own in "The Walking Dead" — Damon, seeing right through his impersonation of Alaric, knocks him to the ground and restrains him with a chain around the neck long enough for Bonnie to turn him back to stone. Unfortunately, upon her death, the spell breaks, and he proceeds to give one of these to Stefan, his doppelgänger.
  • Cursed with Awesome: Silas is a true immortal and therefore, NOTHING can kill him. However, Silas views his immortality as more of a "curse" now that his true beloved is dead and he spent his whole immortal life (over 2,000 years) entombed in darkness for eternity.
  • Cynicism Catalyst: Silas's true love (Amara) was murdered by Qetsiyah. His main mission for wreaking havoc on everyone is because he wants to be with his true love in death.
  • Dark and Troubled Past: When you read up on Silas's past and history, calling it this is really quite an understatement.
  • Dark Is Evil/Evil Wears Black: He has a strong preference for wearing darker colors, especially black.
  • Dark Messiah: Silas is not only possibly the most powerful being in the world, but he is also THE very first immortal being ever created.
  • Dating Catwoman: With Amara. Although Silas was in love with Amara, his love for h her was forbidden as Silas was engaged to be married to Qetsiyah.
  • Deadpan Snarker: Silas has a sharp wit and sense of humour. He is also very sarcastic.
  • Dead Person Impersonation: In Season Five, Silas will be posing as or pretending to be Stefan (his doppelgänger) while Stefan happens to be desiccating and starving at the bottom of a lake sealed in a vault.
    • Averted in the season five premiere, as Jeremy and Ghost!Bonnie see through Silas's act, and he later admits the whole doppelgänger thing to Damon.
  • Death Seeker: Silas wants nothing more than to die and pass on so that he can be with his true love forever.
  • Death Trap: The island where his body is sealed. It's covered with booby traps designed to kill vampires, and is populated by witches who are tasked with making sure that no-one gets at Silas.
  • Despair Event Horizon: Most likely when Silas discovered that his true love had been murdered by his own best friend Qetsiyah before he could do anything about it. And afterwards, being entombed in darkness for two millennia. Because of the tragedy, Silas has most likely gone from a normal, good-intentioned warlock, to a twisted, psychotic, sociopathic, vengeful and hateful villainous immortal.
  • The Determinator: Silas will do literally anything to be reunited with his true love, Amara, in death. ANYTHING.
  • Did Not Get the Girl: Silas wanted to be with Amara in true death in the afterlife. Unfortunately, this does not happen as Silas dies and crosses over to The Other Side and Amara dies and crosses over to the afterlife. This means that Qetsiyah got her wish in eternally separating Silas and Amara for all time.
  • Doppelgänger: Technically, Stefan is Silas's doppelgänger. Silas is the progenitor of the Original Salvatore doppelgänger bloodline.
  • The Dreaded: Silas is this to basically every single character on the show, starting with Kol Mikaelson. The otherwise implacable, deadpan, slightly unhinged Original is flat-out freaked at the thought of him rising.
  • Driven to Madness: Being entombed in darkness and left to starve would make anyone turn crazy, vengeful and mad.
  • Driven to Suicide: Silas desired to become mortal and die so that he could be with Amara in the afterlife.
  • Driven to Villainy: Having your true love murdered by your own best friend out of jealousy and being entombed by that same best friend for over 2,000 years is bound to make someone turn psychotic and vengeful.
  • Drunk on the Dark Side: Silas is so addicted to using his powerful psychic powers to do immoral acts and deeds.
  • Drunk with Power: Silas likes to use his strong psychic abilities, which he has mastered for over a period of two millennia, for bad or immoral intentions.
  • The Dulcinea Effect: With Amara. He loved her so much that he created a spell of immortality just so he and Amara could be immortal together and spend an eternity with one another.
  • Dying as Yourself: Silas desires to take the cure, which would reverse his immortality, die a mortal death, drop The Veil, which is a barrier separating the metaphysical plane and The Other Side, destroy The Other Side completely and cross over to be with Amara in death for all eternity. This implies that although Silas made himself immortal, he desires to be human again so he could die to be with his true love.
  • Dysfunction Junction: Silas may be the ultimate villain or Big Bad, but when you read back on his history and his life story, he is a walking tragedy.
  • Entitled Bastard: It definitely showed in how he went about manipulating Qetsiyah into creating the spell of immortality and by also wreaking chaos and havoc on everyone so that he could die and cross over to the afterlife to be with Amara.
  • Eternal Love: Silas and Amara were deeply in love that they wanted to live forever together. Silas loved Amara so much that he desired to spend an eternity with her. He convinced Qetsiyah, who was also in love with Silas, to create a spell for immortality. Silas then took the immortality spell and made himself and Amara truly immortal so that they could have the gift of eternal love.
  • Even Evil Has Loved Ones: Silas is a major villain who will resort to evil methods to get what he wants but he will do anything, ANYTHING, to be reunited with his true love (Amara), the woman who Qetsiyah murdered out of jealousy and vengefulness, in death.
  • Evil Counterpart/Evil Twin/Foil:To Stefan, his doppelgänger and Good Counterpart.
  • Evil Genius: Silas is a master manipulator, master strategist and very intelligent and brilliant. He can outsmart anyone.
  • Evil Gloating: Silas has a huge ego but it is understandable considering how powerful and indestructible he is.
  • Evil Has Good Taste: Silas is very suave, sophisticated and well put together. This could be because Silas is from a very ancient time period (1st century B.C.).
  • Evil Is Easy: Silas is so good at being bad.
  • Evil Is Petty: Silas's constant, casual cruelty speaks for itself.
  • Evil Makes You Monstrous: In Silas's illusionary monstrous form. Subverted in his true form.
  • Evil Makes You Ugly: In his illusionary monstrous form. Subverted in Silas's true form.
  • Evil Mentor: Silas in Professor Shane's form. When Silas was trying to teach Bonnie how to control and use her magic effectively, this was really Silas's way of manipulating Bonnie and trying to gain her trust in order to get her to do what he wants.
  • Evil Plan: Silas's goal has been to get Bonnie to drop the veil so that he can be reunited with his true love, while letting all of the vengeful spirits and supernatural beings from the Other Side who have died roam free and wreak havoc.
  • Evil Sorceror/Evil Warlock: Silas may be a powerful warlock who practices magic, but he doesn't always use his magic for good purposes or intentions.
  • Evil Sounds Deep/Evil Sounds Raspy: In his illusory, disfigured monstrous form. Averted in his true form — he just sounds like Stefan Salvatore.
  • Evil Versus Evil: Silas versus Qetsiyah. Qetsiyah is Silas's arch enemy and is the biggest threat to his plans and agenda.
  • Evil Virtues: Despite the fact that Silas is a dangerous villain, Silas actually has a few virtues:
    • Ambition: Silas is very ambitious when it comes to getting what he wants and accomplishing his plans, goals or agenda.
    • Determination: Silas is VERY determined and he NEVER gives up.
    • Love: His whole motivation behind his immoral acts is his love for Amara.
  • Eviler than Thou: Klaus thought that he was the strongest, most intimidating, most powerful, and most badass supernatural being ever...until he got his ass handed to him in 4x18 by Silas. Guess Silas has taken the title of Most Badass and Dangerous Alpha Male of Mystic Falls from Klaus.

    F-J
  • The Faceless: Only in season four in Silas's monstrous illusionary form. This was probably to keep up the suspense until Silas's true face and identity was revealed at the end of the season.
  • Face–Heel Turn/Face–Monster Turn: It's likely that before Silas's true love was murdered by his own best friend (Qetsiyah) and he was trapped in a tomb for over two millennia, turning him into the villain he is now, he was just a warlock who had good intentions.
  • Face of an Angel, Mind of a Demon: Silas has an innocent, attractive face but his intentions and personality sure don't match his looks.
  • Facial Horror: In his illusory monstrous form. Subverted in his true form.
  • Fallen Hero: Oh, dear. Just read about the legend of Silas and what happened to him. The term tragic isn't enough to describe him.
  • Fantastic Racism: Silas absolutely hates all vampires, meaning that Silas hates himself and his own kind or creation.
  • Fatal Attractor: Silas hasn't had any luck with love. His true love was tragically murdered by his own best friend (Qetsiyah) and his best friend happened to be obsessively and psychotically in love with him. It seems as though his doppelgänger Stefan has followed in his footsteps in regards to attracting crazy, evil and psychotic women.
  • Fate Drives Us Together: His relationship with Amara, his true love and soulmate, is built on the concept of destiny and fate. This concept of fate and destiny also extends to his and Amara's doppelgänger bloodlines.
  • Fate Worse than Death: Silas was buried alive for two thousand years to desiccate and starve. Death is a walk in the park compared to that.
  • Faux Affably Evil: Silas is this while posing as his doppelganger Stefan in the fifth season.
  • Fearless Undead: Silas is fearless because he is an immortal who is invulnerable to everything and he is impossible to kill due to the fact that no weapon can kill him or destroy him. Silas's only ultimate weakness is the cure for immortality. Hell, Silas doesn't even fear death, in fact, he strongly advocates for his death and this was his ultimate goal throughout the course of season four.
  • Final Boss: Silas is the biggest villain or ultimate foe in the entire series as of now. He is the most dangerous considering that nothing can defeat him and that he is impossible to kill. At least with the Originals, you can either dagger them or kill them with a white oak stake.
  • First Of Its Kind: Silas is the very first immortal being (or vampire) in the world.
  • Fool for Love: Everything that Silas has done has been for Amara.
  • For the Evulz: Silas does some of his immoral acts for his own amusement.
  • Freudian Excuse: When you read about the legend of Silas, you can easily understand why he became so warped.
  • Functional Magic: Silas is a very powerful warlock who practices magic. He is also a Traveller, a sub culture of very powerful and gifted witches.
  • Game Face: His disfigured face looks like a cross between Freddy Krueger and Emperor Palpatine.
  • Genius Bruiser: Definitely more of the former than the latter but Silas is very dangerous in both combat and tactical thinking.
  • God Couple: With Amara. Silas and Amara were the world's very first immortal beings and the world's very first immortal man and first immoral woman respectively.
  • Gone Horribly Wrong: Because Silas cast the immortality spell on himself so that he could live forever, he completely messed with nature. This caused nature to strike back by creating a doppelgänger bloodline for Silas. Stefan is Silas's doppelgänger or "shadow self". It is unknown if there have been preceding doppelgängers of Silas before Stefan, but it is most likely possible, since a bloodline is needed for doppelgängers to be born.
  • Grand Romantic Gesture: Silas loved Amara so much that he desired immortality and wanted to live forever so that he could spend an eternity with Amara. So, he wanted to cretae a spell for immortality so that he and Amara could both become immortal and live forever so that they could have an Eternal Love.
  • Guile Hero: When Silas was a warlock. It is clear that during Silas's mortal life, although Silas generally had good intentions, he was very good at manipulating others and getting them to do what he wanted, like the way he got Qetsiyah to help him create the spell of immortality so that he could become immortal himself and also make his true love, Amara immortal as well.
  • Handicapped Badass: Silas has currently lost his psychic and mental powers due to Qetsiyah suppressing his mental powers by doing a spell linking Stefan to Silas and wiping Stefan's memory.
  • Has a Type: Silas admitted to Damon that he has a thing for brunettes (considering that Amara, his true love was a brunette).
  • Hated by All: Every single character either hates him or fears him. Understandable considering Silas is the ultimate villain that the characters have ever faced.
  • Hates Everyone Equally: With the exception of his true love Amara, of course.
  • Heartbroken Badass: Silas's true love Amara was murdered by Qetsiyah. On top of it, Silas was entombed in darkness for 2,000+ years. See Woobie, Destroyer of Worlds.
  • The Heavy: Silas's actions drive the plot for most of season four and season five.
  • Hereditary Curse: After Silas cast the immortality spell on himself, he ended up screwing with nature and at least one doppelgänger of himself was created. It is presumed that Silas had a child or children with his true love in order for a bloodline to continue and for Stefan to be born, much like the doppelgänger line of Tatia (and Katherine and Elena).
  • Hero Killer: See Neck Snap below.
  • Hidden Agenda Villain: Nobody knows exactly what Silas's true plans are, what exactly it is that he really wants or what he is really trying to accomplish or achieve.
  • Horror Hunger: After Silas was released from the tomb in which he starved for over two thousand years, he went on a blood gorging rampage, ravishing blood bags and robbing the blood banks.
  • Hot Warlock: Before Silas became immortal.
  • Humanshifting: Once Silas consumes a huge amount of blood, he is able to appear as anyone.
  • Humanoid Abomination/Monstrous Humanoid: Silas could be considered a combination of both although mileage may vary. Silas has been frequently described as a dangerous, evil and malevolent "creature". He is even depicted this way physically on The Hunters Mark or tattoo. One of Silas's illusions makes him appear highly disfigured, ugly and grotesque and when Silas is awoken with Jeremy's blood, he has the appearance of a fossilized monster due to starving and desiccating for over two thousand years. This is now subverted since Silas is physically identical to the very attractive Stefan and is not at all monstrous in his true form.
  • Identical Grandson: Stefan is a very, very, very distant descendant of Silas as his doppelgänger. They are identical in physical appearance despite being two thousand years apart in age.
  • I Cannot Self-Terminate: Silas desperately wants to die so that he could be with his true love in death, but he can't kill himself due to the fact that he is truly immortal and thus cannot die under any circumstances.
  • I Control My Minions Through...: Silas controls others with his psychic powers, such as illusions, manipulation and fear.
  • I Did What I Had to Do: Laid buried and starved (leading to the point of severe desiccation and fossilization) for over 2,000 years because he resisted the cure for immortality in order to not die a mortal death and be stuck on the Other Side with Qetsiyah.
  • I Let Gwen Stacy Die: Amara was brutally killed by Qetsiyah before he could do anything about it.
  • I Know What You Fear: Silas can read other's minds due to being a powerful psychic. Therefore, he is able to use other people's deepest fears against them for purposes of manipulation and torture.
    • Silas can do Type 1, Type 2 and Type 3.
  • I Want My Beloved to Be Happy: In regard to Amara. Even after 2,000 years and being reunited with Amara, Amara wishes to die due to suffering as the anchor to the Other Side and she pleads for Silas to kill her himself. Silas struggles with doing so but also understands and respects her decision, even though it absolutely hurts Silas.
  • Immortals Are Sex Gods: Silas is very attractive despite being a 2,000+ immortal.
  • Immortality: Silas is the very first immortal being on Earth. And without the cure, he is literally impossible to kill.
  • Immortality Hurts: Immortality means nothing to Silas anymore now that his true love is dead. Silas sought out immortality because of her.
  • Immortality Immorality: In order to become an immortal being, Silas, as a warlock and servant of nature, went against the laws of nature and created a spell, setting off a major imbalance. This is why nature created his doppelganger line, resulting in Stefan.
  • Immortality Inducer/Immortality Seeker: Silas was a powerful warlock who, with the aid of Qetsiyah, created the spell for immortality and used it on himself, becoming the world's very first immortal creature. He wanted to share it with his true love, but Qetsiyah messed that up by murdering her and entombing him.
  • Immortal Life Is Cheap: Literally nothing can kill Silas and he is impossible to kill, since he is immortal. He is invulnerable to anything and everything.
  • Inter-Class Romance: With Amara. While Silas appeared to be more wealthy, Amara was poor.
  • Interspecies Romance: With Amara. Before they both became immortal, Silas was a warlock and Amara was a human.
  • In the Hood: Silas wore a hood in his monstrous illusionary form.
  • In-Series Nickname: Silas has been known as The World's First Immortal Being, The First Immortal, and The First Immortal Man.
  • It's All About Me: Silas isn't at all bothered in the least by all of the death, suffering, and misery he's brought to dozens of people as long as he is reunited with his true love in death.
  • Jerk Justifications: A mixture or combination of Type I, Type II, and Type III. Silas thought that his soulmate was dead for centuries after believing that Qetsiyah had brutally murdered her out of jealousy and on top of it, he was desiccating and starving while he was entombed in darkness for eternity on a remote island. Of course Silas is going to be hateful, vengeful and sociopathic.
  • Jerk with a Heart of Jerk: Silas was a bit of a jerk during his human years even though he generally had good intentions. However, after he was entombed in darkness and separated from Amara for over 2 millennia, Silas became downright sociopathic and vengeful.
  • Jerkass Has a Point: He may be a bastard but the worst thing about Silas's speeches to Damon are that he is usually right.
  • Jumping Off the Slippery Slope: This was bound to happen to Silas considering that he was imprisoned in darkness for a long time.

    K-P
  • Kick the Dog: Silas enjoys and gets a kick out of outsmarting, overpowering and seeing others suffer as much as possible. He's even tortured Klaus of all people.
  • Kill and Replace: More like lock away in a safe underwater and replace. Silas will be posing as Stefan during season five.
  • Kill the Cutie: Silas kills Jeremy in 4.14 by consuming his blood and snapping his neck.
  • Killed Off for Real: Silas is stabbed to death by Stefan in 5.07, ending the 2,000+ year old warlock and former immortal's life. To make matters worse, Silas ends up stuck on the Other Side with his mortal enemy Qetsiyah for eternity and is also separated from his one true love, Amara, forever.
  • Knight In Shining Armour: For Amara.
  • Lack of Empathy: Doesn't seem to show or care about hurting others in order to get his way.
  • Lady and Knight: Silas is the Knight to Amara's Lady. Could also be seen as the Knight to Qetsiyah's Lady.
  • Ladykiller in Love: Silas was in love with Amara and before he met her, it could be assumed that Silas was a bit of a womanizer.
  • Last of His Kind: Silas is the last true immortal being living on Earth.
  • Leaking Can of Evil: Even though Silas was sealed in a tomb and left to desiccate and fossilize, Silas could still use his psychic powers to torture people in the mortal world. This means that even sealed up in a tomb, Silas still had a lot of power over people and he could still cause major destruction.
  • Life Drinker: According to Professor Shane, immortals need to feed on blood to survive. Silas is no different in this regard.
  • Limited Wardrobe: Understandable considering that Silas spent two millennia underground and was trying to adjust to the modern times after he was released.
  • Living Emotional Crutch: For BOTH Amara and Qetsiyah.
  • Long-Lost Relative: Silas was revealed to be a very distant ancestor of Stefan and Damon as well as the Salvatore family bloodline.
  • Love at First Sight/Love Before First Sight: With Amara.
  • Love Hurts: Oh dear. All Silas has wanted was to spend an eternity with Amara, his soulmate, but instead, all he has gotten is endless heartache, pain and suffering.
  • Love Makes You Crazy/Love Makes You Evil: Silas is willing to do anything and everything, including causing ultimate chaos, pain, destruction, in order to be reunited with his true love in death.
  • Love Triangle/Psychotic Love Triangle: The love triangle with Silas, Qetsiyah and Amara. Also known as the original love triangle of the series. It seems as though Silas's doppelgänger, Stefan, has followed in Silas's footsteps and has a habit of attracting crazy, psychotic, clingy and jealous women.
  • MacGuffin: The cure for immortality/vampirism that lies with him. Its very existence drives the actions of the main cast for over half of Season Four.
  • Magic Is Evil: Although Silas is a very powerful warlock, he doesn't seem to use his magic or his gift to do good or moral things.
  • The Man Behind the Man: Silas is pretty much behind everything bad that is going on in the town of Mystic Falls.
  • Man of Wealth and Taste: Silas is from 1st century B.C., which is known to be a highly cultured and sophisticated period. Not to mention that from the flashbacks, it appears that Silas came from nobility and wealth.
  • Manipulative Bastard: And how! Silas is the most manipulative and ruthless character in the series as of now.
  • Master of Disguise: This is Silas's speciality. Because of Silas's powerful psychic abilities, he can make himself appear as anyone.
  • Master of Illusion: Silas powerful psychic abilities are what make Silas the most dangerous character in the series universe. On top of the fact that Silas is immortal and cannot be killed or destroyed.
  • Mean Character, Nice Actor: Silas is evil but Paul Wesley is the nicest and funniest person ever.
  • Meaningful Name: Silas is a masculine name of Latin origin, which means "forest dweller" or "woodland dweller". Ironically, Silas's name is derived from a forest god, as in the series, he is considered to be the ultimate enemy of nature.
  • The Mentally Disturbed: It is obvious that Silas is severely twisted, sociopathic, psychotic, vengeful and hateful. Being imprisoned in darkness for two millennia will do that to someone.
  • Mighty Glacier: He's quite strong but lacks the super speed that most vampires have and which gives them the advantage in a fight, making him less formidable than most opponents in a straight fight.
  • Mind Manipulation: One of his specialties. He appears to people as visions of their loved ones to manipulate them into bringing about his return.
  • Mind Rape: With Shane, Bonnie, and Klaus as his favorite victims.
  • Monster Progenitor: Technically, Silas is the progenitor of the Salvatore Doppelgängers, which are considered to be a supernatural species.
  • More than Mind Control: Silas is able to compel, control or influence many different people at the same time, including vampires and possibly even the Originals.
  • Mr. Fanservice: For a 2,000 year old immortal, Silas is very hot. That is to be expected since he is the spitting physical image of Stefan.
  • My Greatest Failure: Not ending up with Amara and finding true peace and eternity with her.
  • Names to Run Away from Really Fast: Hearing or saying the name Silas is enough to scare the crap out of everyone and invoke fear in everyone, including the powerful Original vampires, such as Klaus and Kol.
  • Neck Snap: Does this to Jeremy Gilbert after drinking all of his blood. And since Jeremy was a Hunter, a supernatural being, his ring can't bring him back from the dead anymore.
    • Silas also does this to Matt in 5.02, although Matt comes back to life because he is wearing the Gilbert Ring.
  • Nerves of Steel: For the majority of the time, Silas is very cold and manipulative in how he goes about things.
  • Nigh-Invulnerability: Silas, as a powerful immortal, is completely invulnerable to anything and everything — NO WEAPON can harm or kill him. His only true weakness is the cure for immortality, but that's now gone since Katherine ingested it and became human.
  • Not Afraid to Die: Silas seems to cheerlead his death instead of wanting to take over the world as the world's most powerful first immortal being.
  • Not Quite Dead: Silas didn't die since he is an immortal being. Instead, Silas was buried alive in darkness, which caused him to starve and fossilize for over two thousand years.
  • Obviously Evil: Just look at Silas, and you can tell that he is bad news and doesn't have noble intentions.
  • Official Couple: With Amara. Their romance has existed for over 2,000 years.
  • Oh, Crap!: Anyone who even hears his name has this reaction. Caroline says it best when she and Klaus realize that the pain Klaus has been feeling from the white oak stake lodged in his back — hell, even the stake — has been nothing but a hallucination:
"If he can do this to you of all people, what can he do to the rest of us?"
  • The Older Immortal: The Originals were thought to be the oldest vampires in the series, but Silas is actually the oldest vampire in the series at over two thousand years old. Technically, though, he's not a vampire, and hates being called one.
  • Older Than Feudalism: Silas is over two thousand years old and was born either before or after 1st century B.C.
  • Older Than They Look: Although Silas is over 2,000 years old in actual age, Silas has the appearance of someone in their early 20's. This is due to being an immortal being and therefore, having the ability to not age.
  • One True Love: For Amara.
  • Only One Name: Silas doesn't seem to have a last name.
  • Opposites Attract: With Amara. While Silas was a powerful, wealthy warlock, Amara was a regular and poor human.
  • Physical God: Silas was the world's first immortal being, meaning that he was completely indestructible and unkillable.
  • Platonic Life-Partners: With Qetsiyah, who like him was a witch. They were best friends, and Qetsiyah loved Silas, but he didn't love her back.
  • Power at a Price: Silas granted himself the wish of being an immortal by casting the very first immortality spell on himself. Unfortunately, it had consequences, since Silas, a warlock who is a servant of nature, defied nature. As a result, shadow selves or a doppelgänger line of Silas ( i.e. Stefan) was created in order to achieve balance in nature. It is not known if Stefan could be used as a weakness against Silas yet, although it is appearing that way as Qetsiyah used Silas's doppelgänger, Stefan, to suppress Silas's psychic and mental powers. Unfortunately, as a result of Qetsiyah's binding spell to suppress Silas's powers, Stefan also lost his memory.
  • Psychic Powers: Silas is a very powerful psychic and he can read the minds and thoughts of others without difficulty. He can also torture others by messing with their minds and making others see whatever he wants them to.
  • Psychotic Love Triangle: And how! Both Qetsiyah and Amara were passionately in love with Silas, although Qetsiyah's love for Silas is more of an obsession and in the If I Can't Have You…, Love Hungry, Love Makes You Crazy, Murder the Hypotenuse levels. And it seems as though his doppelgänger Stefan has followed the same path as him in regards to attracting obsessive psychotic women (such as Katherine and Rebekah for example).
  • Psychotic Smirk: One of Silas's trademarks.

    R-Y
  • Really Two Thousand Years Old: He is officially the oldest character in the entire series.
  • "The Reason You Suck" Speech: Silas gives a pretty good one to Damon in the season five premiere.
  • Reincarnation Romance: With Amara. Their love is literally reincarnated almost every century according to Qetsiyah since doppelgängers of Silas and Amara have been finding each other and falling in love over the centuries.
  • The Resenter: Silas strongly hates Qetsiyah and has a deep seated hatred towards her, which is understandable considering that Qetsiyah brutally killed his true love out of spite ad jealousy and ended up entombing him in darkness for over two millennia, while being left to starve and desiccate.
  • The Reveal: Stefan is revealed to be Silas's doppelgänger, made to be a version of Silas who could die, since Silas cheated death by becoming immortal. Silas has not yet stated if Stefan could be a weakness to him. Not much is known about Silas's bloodline, family and background, but it is assumed that Silas's history will be revealed in season five.
  • Revenge Before Reason: More than anything, Silas is driven by revenge and wants to avenge the death of his true love Amara, by destroying Qetsiyah, taking the cure for immortality, destroying the barrier which separates the metaphysical world (the place where dead human souls go after they die aka The Veil) and The Other Side (which is a supernatural purgatory meant for supernatural beings to go to after they die), taking the cure for immortality, dying a mortal death and crossing over to the metaphysical plane to be with his one true love, Amara, in eternal death.
  • Rule of Three: Silas's plan to bring back the dead, i.e, every single supernatural creature on The Other Side, involves an Expression Triangle that can only be completed by three mass murders. As of 4x17, all three have been completed: the explosion that took out the Mystic Falls Council in 4x01, when Klaus is tricked into massacring twelve hybrids in 4x12, and Caroline killing the coven of witches in 4x17.
  • Runaway Groom: Qetsiyah reveals that Silas abandoned her on their wedding night. To add insult to injury, Silas had taken the immortality elixir with Amara at the same time he and Qetsiyah would have been married.
  • Sadistic Choice: To either live forever entombed, or take the cure for his immortality and eventually die of hunger/thirst. Worse, even if he'd taken the cure, his lover was a mortal. As a witch, his soul would go to the Other Side, the purgatory for supernaturals that Qetsiyah created just so that even in death, he would be with her instead of the woman he really loved, Amara.
  • Sealed Badass in a Can: Silas was the very first immortal being in the world who ended up being entombed by Qetsiyah as revenge.
  • Sealed Evil in a Can: Silas is sealed in a tomb that can only be opened by a Bennett witch hopped up on a special kind of dark magic (called Expression) and using a spell that only appears when one of The Five (which are a group of supernatural vampire hunters that are so rare that only one is born/created every century) completes his Hunter's Mark or tattoo by killing enough vampires. Also, the tomb is on a remote, desolate and booby-trapped island somewhere near Nova Scotia, Canada, and it's inhabited by witches who are tasked with getting rid of any vampire that comes looking for the cure for immortality.
  • Shadow Archetype: Silas is this to his doppelgänger, Stefan. Silas is the Evil Counterpart to Stefan's Good Counterpart.
  • Sharp-Dressed Man
  • Shipper on Deck: He seems to be a Klaroline and Stelena shipper, oddly enough.
  • Shrouded in Myth: The reason why so few people outside of his disciples and witches have heard of him. The ones who have dismiss him as some sort of supernatural bogeyman.
  • Sinister Silhouettes: In season four, when he was in his monstrous form, Silas was always a shadow. This could have been a way to uphold the mystery of Silas's true form and identity.
  • Soft-Spoken Sadist: In his true form.
  • Starcrossed Lovers: With his true love, Amara.
  • Start of Darkness: After being entombed for over two thousand years, one can expect someone like Silas to become a vengeful villain.
  • Stronger with Age: Silas is the oldest character and is also, by far, the most powerful supernatural being in the series universe. His power strongly exceeds that of The Originals (such as Mikael, Klaus, Elijah and Rebekah for example) as well as any other vampire, werewolf, witch or any supernatural being existent in the series.
  • Strong Family Resemblance: To Stefan, due to the fact that Stefan is Silas's doppelganger. Silas is also a distant ancestor of the Salvatore family.
  • Superpower Lottery: Due to being a powerful psychic and an immortal, Silas possesses various abilities and powers. His most notable abilities are his Psychic Powers.
  • Together in Death: Silas wants to die so that he can be with his one true love Amara forever.
  • Took a Level in Badass: Silas went from being an extremely powerful warlock to being the world's very first immortal being.
  • Trauma Conga Line: Silas life story is nothing but endless misery and tragedy. It is therefore, not surprising that Silas turned out completely psychotic, evil and vengeful.
  • Uncanny Family Resemblance: With Stefan. This is to e expected considering that Stefan is the doppelganger of Silas and a very ancient and distant descendent of Silas.
  • The Unfettered: Silas has zero morals and conscience and is extremely ruthless — for all his talk of just wanting to die and be with his lover, he seems to enjoy mentally, emotionally and physically torturing people. Even Klaus and Katherine, previously the most ruthless characters around, have more standards than this guy.
  • The Unseen: So far, his true face hasn't been revealed. When he's released, he morphs into Professor Shane to further manipulate Bonnie, then into Caroline to torment Klaus, then later into Jeremy, Stefan, Damon (off-screen), Rebekah, Klaus, Matt, Liz, and even Alaric to mess with various characters. We get a glimpse of his face at the end of "Pictures of You", where it's apparent that Qetsiyah left him disfigured, but in "The Walking Dead", he reveals to Bonnie this was just another trick.
    • His true form is finally revealed in the finale. It turns out Stefan is Silas's doppelgänger.
  • Villainous Valour: Silas NEVER gives up and is highly determined.
  • Villain with Good Publicity: In season five, Silas will be posing as his doppelgänger Stefan, The Hero.
  • Visionary Villain: Silas always has a clear goal in sight and he will do anything and everything, including causing others significant harm, in order to achieve it.
  • Weak, but Skilled: While he is very strong and fast, he is considerably less so than most other vampires on the series to the point that Jeremy was able to get the upper hand in a fight quite easily. Silas prefers to use his Telepathic powers and his brilliant tactical mind to get what he wants.
  • Who Wants to Live Forever?: Silas wanted to, before Qetsiyah murdered his true love. Now he wants to die so he can be with her forever.
  • Wicked Cultured: Silas was born during 1st century B.C., meaning that he came from a highly cultured period.
  • With Great Power Comes Great Insanity: Silas may be the most powerful immortal being in the world, but man, does he use his power to do sadistic and horrible things.
  • Woobie, Destroyer of Worlds: One possible interpretation of his actions. He's been waiting for two thousand years just to be with his one true love. And if the world has to end to bring them together, so be it.
  • Xanatos Gambit: No matter how many people try to defeat him or how many plans people may come up with to try to cross him or defeat him, Silas ALWAYS ends up winning. He is literally unable to be defeated.
  • Xanatos Speed Chess: If something doesn't work out the way he wants it to, he'll always be ready with another plan.
  • You Are Worth Hell: Silas resisted the cure for immortality and stayed buried for over 2,000 years due to not wanting to die, become mortal and be with Qetsiyah on The Other Side. He did this all out of love for Amara and his strong desire to be freed, die and find peace with her in the afterlife once he had destroyed the Other Side.
  • You Have Outlived Your Usefulness: Does this to Professor Shane once he's risen. He drains him of his blood, takes on his form, and leaves him to die on the island.
